- 0:02Hey, welcome to the city point church podcast.
- 0:04Thanks for joining us every day is an opportunity to take hold
- 0:07of. So we hope this message inspires
- 0:10you and build your faith, but it helps you have more of a God
- 0:13perspective for your day. Enjoy, I want.
- 0:17To read out a story to you, better put on my glasses.
- 0:23Here we go. This is a man called Gino
- 0:27Bartelli. He was one of Italy's greatest
- 0:30cyclists, born in 1914, known as king of cycling, born into power
- 0:38in rural, he said that word rural country, Tuscany, near
- 0:42Florence. He rose to fame in his early
- 0:4420s, winning the Tour de France in 1938 and again in 1948 after
- 0:51the war, along with multiple titles.
- 0:54He was a devout Catholic with strong moral convictions.
- 0:58Bartelli displayed extraordinary courage in World War 2 following
- 1:03Germany's 1943 occupation of Italy, which led to the
- 1:07deportation of nearly 10,000 Jews, 7000 of which perished in
- 1:12camps. He used his celebrity and
- 1:15position as a military bike messenger to aid the resistance.
- 1:21At the request of the Catholic cardinal, who was a friend of
- 1:24his, Bartelli transported counterfeit identity documents
- 1:29between Florence and Assisi, completing at least 40 long
- 1:35training bikes with papers hidden in his bicycles, frame
- 1:38and handlebars. He also collected funds from
- 1:42Swiss Bank in Genoa to support hidden Jews in Florence and
- 1:45sheltered his Jewish friends and family in an apartment and
- 1:49basement. These actions that he did, they
- 1:52carried immense personal risk, imprisonment or death for
- 1:56himself and his family. Yet Batali believed that helping
- 2:01those in need outweighed the danger.
- 2:04He kept his wartime heroism a secret until his death in 2000,
- 2:09insisting good deeds should not be boasted about.
- 2:12He once told his son, if you're good at a sport, they attract
- 2:15medals to your shirt and then they shine in some museum.
- 2:19That which is earned by doing good deeds is attached to the
- 2:22soul and shines elsewhere. Now I I love this story and I
- 2:28wonder if someone like Bartelli ever sat there as a child on his
- 2:32little bike, riding through country Tuscany and pondered
- 2:36what could be possible in his life.
- 2:40He started out as a poor boy riding through these these
- 2:45country streets and his life was ordinary.
- 2:48But his faith and his conviction caused him to look at the 'cause
- 2:55that was presented around him, take what he had and to achieve
- 3:00extraordinary feats with the richest kind of eternal reward.
- 3:05I wonder for you and I if we could ponder the thought this
- 3:09morning, what is possible? So the title of the message is
- 3:14what is possible and what is our part?
- 3:19Because we always have a part to play.
- 3:22It's not just all God doing all things.
- 3:25We're included in the picture in Matthew 1926.
- 3:30Is this a problem? Do you want me to take a mic?
- 3:33No, OK, Matthew 1926 it reads. Jesus looked at them intently
- 3:38and said humanly speaking it is impossible, but with God
- 3:43everything is possible. With God everything is possible.
- 3:49In Mark 923 it reads anything is possible if a person believes So
- 3:57have you sat down and ever pondered the question?
- 4:01What's possible? The Bible encourages us to
- 4:06broaden our minds, ask the question, ask him the question.
- 4:11But while embracing one important part in this
- 4:15Scripture, I want to do a little bit of a dance this morning with
- 4:18a word and it says with God everything is possible.
- 4:25With Greek word there is para. I so badly wanted to find
- 4:30someone Greek and tell me how I did, saying that I practiced so
- 4:33hard. John's not even here, he's at
- 4:35Bribie, and so we didn't get to hear it.
- 4:39You could argue that the word para, it means it could mean in
- 4:46or of or from, but it translates better in this particular
- 4:51passage of Scripture as with so if I say that I went to the park
- 4:58with my grandson Balfa, who's present, I've got Balfa and
- 5:06myself. There's two people in the room.
- 5:09If Pastor Rachel said I'm taking all of the song leaders out to
- 5:14dinner, who's at dinner? We've got Pastor Rach and or the
- 5:19song leaders. When we use the word with it
- 5:24usually means yourself and someone else in the room.
- 5:30Our Lord Jesus, he's so relational.
- 5:36He's so relational. He wants to do life with you.
- 5:40He wants to be so close, so intricately involved in your
- 5:45life. Almighty God, Creator of heaven
- 5:48and earth, desires to do life with you.
- 5:53And so when he tells us anything is possible, it's anything is
- 5:57possible with Him, we're not excluded from the picture we're
- 6:04in. We're in that, that picture.
- 6:06We're in that diagram. It's God and it's us, which
- 6:11means God has a part to play in. Anything is possible, but we
- 6:16have a part to play. It's a partnership.
- 6:20It's with God. All things are possible.
- 6:26Sometimes we can excuse our involvement.
- 6:30We can say things like, well, if God wanted it to happen, he'll
- 6:33just go and make it happen. He's God.
- 6:36And I mean, God is God. He can do whatever he pleases,
- 6:39but it's genuinely not how he works.
- 6:43He likes to invite us into his will.
- 6:48God's will be done, which means please pray for God's will to be
- 6:52done. It's an invitation to partner
- 6:55with God with what he wants, with what he wants to establish
- 7:00in US and through us. He gives us the strength and the
- 7:05power, the enabling, the anointing to outwork that which
- 7:10He wants to do. He's relational.
- 7:14He wants to do life with. In Philippians 413 it says for I
- 7:21can do everything through Christ, who gives me strength?
- 7:26I can do. He gives strength.
- 7:30Why do we need strength? Why do we need strength if God's
- 7:35just going to go and do it all? We need strength because we have
- 7:40a part to play. We're not absent in the things
- 7:45that are possible with God. We're present in the process.
- 7:48So it's a partnership of Him working with us.
- 7:53So with God we can do all things.
- 7:57All things are possible to those that believe.
- 7:59And I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.
- 8:03With God. We can do anything if we
- 8:07believe, which leads me to 4 points.
- 8:11I want to race through four points this morning on what is
- 8:15our part to play and the first one being .1.
- 8:20Our part is to believe. Our part is to believe.
- 8:26In Mark 923 we did not read that.
- 8:29Anything is possible if a a person ticks all of life's
- 8:33boxes. We didn't even read that.
- 8:36Anything is possible if you tick all of churches boxes.
- 8:43We didn't read that. Anything is possible if you're a
- 8:46really, really good person on your best behaviour.
- 8:51And we didn't read that anything is possible if you just work
- 8:55hard enough. Like the world loves to tell
- 8:57you. No, God's Holy Bible says
- 9:02anything is possible if a person believes.
- 9:05Being a good person and doing good deeds is not what qualifies
- 9:10us to receive from God. Faith does He made the way we
- 9:16are reconciled to God by His power, and believing in Him
- 9:21gives us access to the heavenly. It gives us access to believe
- 9:25what is possible out there, what is possible in here.
- 9:29Faith opens more doors than sin will ever close.
- 9:35You cannot earn His power. You cannot be good enough for
- 9:38it. You can't work hard enough for
- 9:40it. It's made available through
- 9:43faith, through believing. Anything is possible.
- 9:48For those that believe the Bible says anything, Do you believe
- 9:56that anything is possible? Maybe a more pointed question
- 10:02could be what have you deemed impossible?
- 10:09What have you given up on? What have you put away?
- 10:17I'm pretty sure that ship sailed for me.
- 10:22It this is this will never happen for me.
- 10:26I tried it and it didn't work. I can feel God's presence here
- 10:32wanting just to speak right into this.
- 10:36It's, it's almost like you've, you've started out with life and
- 10:42it's like a maze. You know, those really fun ones
- 10:45that you, you pay to run around in and you've got all of the
- 10:48shrubs and there's a beginning and then there is an end and
- 10:52there's a way through. But you've started out in this
- 10:55maze in all excitement, but then you hit a dead end and you're
- 10:59like, oh, OK, so you've gone down a different path, but you
- 11:02hit another dead end. And this has kept happening
- 11:07until you got so discouraged and convinced yourself it's just a
- 11:12cruel joke, and you stopped going down paths and stopped
- 11:18believing that there was a way through the scripture that we
- 11:25just read. Where is it, Mark, that anything
- 11:31is possible for those who believe in that particular
- 11:34story, that scenario, Jesus was speaking right into that kind of
- 11:40disappointment. Do you know the cynical people?
- 11:46They don't usually start out cynical.
- 11:50Cynical people usually start out overly optimistic with all of
- 11:58the energy, with all of the hope, with all of the faith, and
- 12:01then they hit disappointment. Then they get discouraged, they
- 12:06get let down, they might experience betrayal, they get
- 12:12hurt, disillusioned, and so they become cynical.
- 12:24The words of Jesus. And I just pray that that you
- 12:27would hear the words of Jesus because this is not my words.
- 12:31This is from his Bible he speaks right into.
- 12:34It was this kind of disappointment that he spoke
- 12:37into. Anything is possible for those
- 12:41that believe. Anything is possible for those
- 12:47that believe. Any situation is possible for
- 12:51those that believe. Any marriage can be great for
- 12:57those that believe any financial crisis has a way through.
- 13:03For those that believe restoration is possible.
- 13:09For those that believe transformation is possible.
- 13:13For those that believe spiritual freedom is possible.
- 13:20For those that believe anything is possible, and I even just
- 13:27pray in this moment that you will allow His words to Pierce
- 13:31your heart right now into that space that you've given up on.
- 13:36I can almost hear you screaming at me.
- 13:37Don't you give me false hope. Don't do it again.
- 13:41I've buried that. I've put a cap on it.
- 13:44I'm not revisiting that again. I pray you would hear His words
- 13:48that anything is possible. He created you with purpose.
- 13:54He created you for a plan, and it's possible if you just
- 14:00believe. With God, anything is possible.
- 14:12Our part is to believe. And so how do we then match our
- 14:16faith and expectation to our desired outcome?
- 14:22That's then in what we do, James talks about our works being as
- 14:27the evidence of our faith, the proof that faith exists.
- 14:32So point to our part is to do the work.
- 14:36In Philippians 212 to 13, it says work hard.
- 14:42I don't like that word so much work.
- 14:44Can't it be like work softly, work a little bit?
- 14:50Does it even need to be work? Define.
- 14:54Let's define work. I mean now it says work hard to
- 14:58show the results of your salvation, obeying God with deep
- 15:02reverence and fear. For God is working in you,
- 15:05giving you the desire and the power to do what pleases him.
- 15:10So God has desires. How beautiful.
- 15:14God has desires, things that He wants to see and it's plans for
- 15:18good for you and for the people in and around us all.
- 15:22And the way that he brings forth what pleases him is to work in
- 15:27US and give us the power to do what pleases him.
- 15:34He empowers us to I just said the word.
- 15:37It's 2 letters starts with D wakey wake.
- 15:42He empowers us to do his work. It's his power, God, power our
- 15:51work. There's that partnership again.
- 15:53He'll do it, but he empowers us. It's together, it's with God.
- 15:59God has a part to play and we have a part to play.
- 16:03When we believe God for something, our actions will then
- 16:07prove what we believe. So when we entertain what is
- 16:12possible, our actions are going to be the evidence of what we
- 16:16believe. I have an example here.
- 16:19Years ago when I went to City Point N, it used to be called
- 16:23COC. I've got my good friend
- 16:25Peschelen in the auditorium here today, visiting from Sweden, a
- 16:29friend of more than 30 years. Do you remember how we had the
- 16:32shed? I don't know what it's called.
- 16:34Yeah, the the shed. I don't know what you call it.
- 16:36It's where they've got the big God bowl, that big, beautiful
- 16:38building now. Sorry, Epicentre.
- 16:41OK, there we go. I didn't know that word.
- 16:43I still call it the shed. So Pastor Ross Abraham, what's
- 16:48his title now, chairman of the Inc movement.
- 16:53I remember recall him giving a word and he was saying the story
- 17:00of how the shed, the epicentre came into being.
- 17:03And there was a group of them who wanted their own area for a
- 17:06youth service. They wanted to get this off the
- 17:08ground. And so a bunch of men went
- 17:10around on a a dirt slab and they started praying and seeking God
- 17:15for this building. Now the building I believe was
- 17:18going to cost somewhere in the vicinity of $200,000, which was
- 17:21a lot of money back then. And so they got together and
- 17:24they prayed and they believed God.
- 17:26And then they got to work. So they had a car wash.
- 17:34Pretty sure they raised about 180 bucks.
- 17:40And I love this story because in their own efforts, it was
- 17:45impossible. They were never going to raise
- 17:47that money washing cars. But you have to understand, God
- 17:52breathes and moves on faith. That's believing in Him with
- 17:58action. They got the money for the
- 18:01building and we now have what's called an epicentre.
- 18:04But that's because men of God stood before and petitioned him.
- 18:09They believed God and then got to work.
- 18:12We still have to do the work. It's faith and action that
- 18:18caused heaven to open up and then the money just started to
- 18:21flow. You know, if God's called you in
- 18:24this place to be a doctor, you still have to do the work.
- 18:30If I come to see you, I don't care how anointed by God you are
- 18:34to be a doctor. If you don't have that
- 18:36certificate on your wall that says graduated, you are not
- 18:40coming near me with a scalpel. You've still got to do the work.
- 18:45There's work that we have to do. We can't escape it.
- 18:50Genuine faith, prove through what we do.
- 18:55It will require testing, commitment, grit, sticking it
- 19:03out when things get hard. Which leads me to .3.
- 19:07Our part is to surrender and obey, and you might think that
- 19:14doing the work and obey is one of the same things.
- 19:17I assure you, it is not. Just because you are working
- 19:22hard does not mean you are being obedient.
- 19:27Just because you are busy does not mean you're living a life of
- 19:31surrender. In Romans 12/1, Let's read.
- 19:38And so, dear brothers and sisters, I plead with you to
- 19:42give your bodies to God because of all He has done for you.
- 19:46Let them be a living and holy sacrifice, the kind He will find
- 19:51acceptable. This is truly the way to worship
- 19:54Him. A living sacrifice.
- 19:59May I point out the obvious, please?
- 20:02It's a living sacrifice, not a dead 1.
- 20:07It's a living sacrifice. It's not a dead one.
- 20:12It says, let me clear something up.
- 20:18When we when we go to God and we surrender to God, sometimes we
- 20:23can have this attitude of oh, Lord, I just surrender
- 20:28everything over to you. And we get down on our knees and
- 20:33we're like, oh, Lord, I'll just surrender.
- 20:36I'm handing it all over to you. I just give you everything.
- 20:41I'll give you all of the work. You do it, Lord, you're good for
- 20:45this. I'm just an encourager.
- 20:47Go team God, Jesus, Holy Spirit, you got this.
- 20:51So I'm just oh, that feels a bit better.
- 20:53Yeah, take, take all of it, Lord.
- 20:56And you lie down. He was my pillow because this,
- 20:58this floor is looking pretty good on this altar.
- 21:01And it's Lord. I just, I lay it all down.
- 21:05Oh, that's good. That's a bit comfy.
- 21:10And we take a nap. Oh.
- 21:37Surrender is not just laying everything down to God.
- 21:44You do it, Lord. Oh, you're good, You're
- 21:46powerful, you're king. I just hand it all off to you.
- 21:51It's laying it down on the altar, but it's picking up what
- 21:58he wants to do. It's laying down your will and
- 22:04picking up God's will. What did Pastor Mills say?
- 22:09When we're on the floor, I'm just processing.
- 22:11Lord, we've got to hear, get vision, understand what He's
- 22:18doing, what He wants to do in and through you, and pick up
- 22:23what He wants us to do. We don't get to just check out.
- 22:28Give it all to you, God, I'm checking out.
- 22:30We don't get to do that as parents.
- 22:32Wouldn't that mean I sometimes, you know, when they're throwing
- 22:35tantrums? Just check out not my child
- 22:37today, Lord, and they're throwing up and you got the,
- 22:40the, the the sickness that's going on.
- 22:42Woo Hoo, Hoo. I'm not that person's parent.
- 22:44No, we don't get to do that. We have to stay for the whole
- 22:48process surrenders, laying down your will and picking up his
- 23:01your will be done. God with you, Lord, all things
- 23:06are possible with you laying down what we want, picking up
- 23:12what He wants. What do we actually think a
- 23:16living sacrifice means? Have you ever just, do you stop?
- 23:21Sometimes in scripture when you're reading the Bible, do you
- 23:24get to, I get to a word, sometimes I'll get 3 words in
- 23:28and I just stop and go. What does that actually mean?
- 23:31Lookout Internship. This is what I do.
- 23:35But to stop and go. What is it to be a living
- 23:38sacrifice? It's sacrifice.
- 23:44Sacrificial. It's obedience.
- 23:49It's often rolled up and like it's often displayed as rolled
- 23:53up sleeves, hard work. It often is faced with
- 23:58challenge, even heartache. Do you know why we're so slow to
- 24:03surrender and obey? Because it's often the very
- 24:08opposite of what we actually want to do.
- 24:13It can look terrifying, but it's why faith is required.
- 24:17It's why we've got to know who God is.
- 24:19It's why we've got to have a vision of what he's doing and,
- 24:24and, and tenacity to believe God for what he wants to do.
- 24:30Otherwise, guys, you might not make it genuine faith.
- 24:37You can tick all of the boxes. You can do all that this church
- 24:41asks you to do, but there comes a moment where you've got to get
- 24:45real personal with your Creator and go, you know what?
- 24:48I believe you. I believe in you with God.
- 24:56He promises to sustain us. He promises that He will be with
- 25:00us and there's beauty and there's rest and there's
- 25:04richness and there's fulfilment in his will, but we need a bit
- 25:11of grit. We will potentially miss what is
- 25:17possible if we're only looking for what's pleasurable.
- 25:26You'll potentially miss what's possible if all you're looking
- 25:29for is what brings you pleasure. Jesus cares.
- 25:34He cares so deeply about every detail in your life.
- 25:37He knows you better than he know yourself.
- 25:40There's fulfilment and joy in his purposes.
- 25:44But our faith needs to be allowed to cost us sometimes.
- 25:49Which leads me to .4, which is our part is to commit our way.
- 25:56Other word would be a line in Psalms 37 verses 3 to 6.
- 26:01It reads trust in the Lord and do good.
- 26:05Then you will live safely in the land and prosper.
- 26:08That's good news. Take delight in the Lord and He
- 26:12will give you your heart's desires.
- 26:15Commit everything you do to the Lord, Trust Him and He will help
- 26:21you. There's that partnership, God
- 26:24and you. He will make your innocence
- 26:27radiate like the dawn, and the justice of your cause will shine
- 26:33like the noonday. Much of what we've talked about
- 26:39this morning is summed up in this scripture.
- 26:41You know what? It's OK to have desires.
- 26:46It's OK to dream the impossible. But did you catch the key in
- 26:51there? It says commit your way to the
- 26:55Lord. In other words, whose agenda are
- 27:00you on here? Are you running on God's agenda
- 27:05or are you running on your own agenda?
- 27:09Do we set our agenda and then just try and fit Jesus in it?
- 27:14This is what I'm doing, Lord, this is what my life's about.
- 27:16Need a new kitchen, got to pay for school fees over here hoping
- 27:20to restore, you know, or do something with this building
- 27:23over there. And then I'll come to church on
- 27:25Sunday, say a quick prayer and try and fit Jesus in.
- 27:29Whose agenda are you on? You might, you might be crying
- 27:32and going. I have tried.
- 27:35I've believed God for things and he hasn't shown up.
- 27:39I've got to ask the question, whose agenda are you on?
- 27:43He invites you to jump on his agenda.
- 27:47You will never experience more fulfillment than when you do.
- 27:52You will never experience more satisfaction.
- 27:55You will be blown away by what he can do with your life.
- 27:59By then you can take your mess and he'll actually turn it into
- 28:03a message. When you jump on his agenda, he
- 28:06can pour life into it. He can pour hope into it.
- 28:09It's amazing what He will do, and I'm reminded of that
- 28:13scripture that says when you seek the Lord, all of these
- 28:16things will be added unto you. It all gets sorted out when you
- 28:20jump on His agenda. All things are possible.
- 28:25He'll use all of it. Musos, could I just get you to
- 28:30jump on up with me please? Is our cause about ourself?
- 28:37What are we about? Or is it actually about?
- 28:39Jesus is our cause Christ is our cause, His gospel message?
- 28:45Is our cause to see freedom, spiritual transformation in US,
- 28:52and reform in our region? Is our life aligned with His
- 28:57will, what He desires, and what He wants to do?
- 29:01When we pray, many people come to God and think that it's
- 29:06begging God for Him to do what we want to do.
- 29:10It's actually flipped. God has things that He wants to
- 29:13do, that He wants to establish, that He wants to breathe.
- 29:17He's told us all about it in here.
- 29:20If you want to know what God wants, open up His Word.
- 29:23There are 8000 plus promises in here for you and for our region.
- 29:28So God wants to do these things. So when we pray, it's not us
- 29:32begging Him to do what we want. It's us coming in to align with
- 29:36what He wants to do. And no thing will be impossible
- 29:39for you. Nothing will be impossible for
- 29:43you. When we align ourselves in His
- 29:46desire, His will ask and you will actually receive.
- 29:57There are promises in here, thousands of them.
- 30:02But when we talk about God's promises, sometimes we skim over
- 30:06the fact that there's usually conditions.
- 30:10You might go conditions. It's like, yes, there's
- 30:14conditions that we are invited to believe, work at, obey, and
- 30:22align with. There's a part God plays and
- 30:26there's a part we play. He empowers.
- 30:29It's our part to obey. He does the transformation.
- 30:34It's our part to walk in step with Holy Spirit.
- 30:38He provides. Oh, He provides.
- 30:43He provides. There's our job to steward.
- 30:49He initiates. It's our job to respond.
- 30:54And he saves. Oh, he saves.
- 30:59It's our part to believe. If we want to see social reform
- 31:07in our region, God actually says that he will heal our land.
- 31:14He says it our part was to humble ourselves, see God, pray,
- 31:24turn from wickedness. What would our region look like?
- 31:29Healed. Paint a picture.
- 31:36I see beauty, I see prosperity. I see Centenary Lakes, that
- 31:45whole side cleaned up. I see cafes, boardwalks.
- 31:51I see high rises. I see a little sectioned off
- 31:54area in that lake where where you've got little tugboats that
- 31:58families can go and hire and get out on the lake.
- 32:04I see Peace hospital beds empty because mental health has calmed
- 32:16right down. And I see sound minds.
- 32:20I see people, godly people, in positions of influence in our
- 32:24governments, schools, public services.
- 32:29I see that there's an answer for homeless people, that anyone who
- 32:35so chooses to be in a home will have access to a a house with
- 32:40enmities and a lockable door. What do you see?
- 32:49What's your part in God's big story?
- 32:54Because we have a part to play. He wants to do it, but not
- 33:00everything that happens is God's will.
- 33:05We get to choose to partner with Him, to bring about what he
- 33:09wants to do. And we are so honoured that the
- 33:12God of the universe would choose you and I to be his answer for
- 33:15humanity. To introduce them to the God who
- 33:19cares, to introduce them to the God who sees, who has a plan,
- 33:24who wants to work with you. Do you know Him this morning?
