- 0:00Speaker 1: I want to see you be brave.
- 0:03Speaker 2: I want to see you be brave.
- 0:07Speaker 3: Rose, as you have told me off Mike, You're in
- 0:11Speaker 3: your vocalist era.
- 0:12Speaker 2: What is that?
- 0:13Speaker 3: What does this mean for you as a retired as
- 0:16Speaker 3: a former theater BFA question Mark.
- 0:20Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, it means that I've done karaoke twice in
- 0:25Speaker 4: the past week and immensely enjoyed myself both times and
- 0:29Speaker 4: think this might need to be a regular part of
- 0:32Speaker 4: my life. I'm just finding that I really like singing
- 0:36Speaker 4: badly in public, even when I'm kind of the only
- 0:43Speaker 4: one doing so. At the my second karaoke event this
- 0:46Speaker 4: past weekend, as in Florida visiting my family, I went
- 0:51Speaker 4: out to karaoke with my mom and all her friends
- 0:54Speaker 4: for my mom's girlfriend's sixtieth birthday. And these ladies, unfortunately
- 1:01Speaker 4: we're not stepping their pussies up and singing, and my mom,
- 1:06Speaker 4: her girlfriend and I were kind of had to carry
- 1:09Speaker 4: the night.
- 1:10Speaker 1: I did maybe eight numbers.
- 1:14Speaker 2: I'm gonna carry the night.
- 1:16Speaker 4: Exactly, and that's how I didn't do Ita No Gaga.
- 1:23Speaker 1: Although I did.
- 1:24Speaker 4: I don't think we talked about this last week. I
- 1:26Speaker 4: did perform AA. Nothing else I can say at my
- 1:29Speaker 4: birthday karaoke. Yes, you did one of the favorite, one
- 1:32Speaker 4: of my top ten Gaga songs.
- 1:34Speaker 2: Way I thought it was your number one all time.
- 1:38Speaker 4: I mean in a joking way, it's not actually my
- 1:41Speaker 4: favorite Gaga song of all time.
- 1:43Speaker 3: Whenever there comes any sort of ranking in content, content
- 1:47Speaker 3: or personally, there's always a delineation. Is this a ranking
- 1:51Speaker 3: of best of all time socio culturally on a critical level,
- 1:57Speaker 3: or best of all time according to me personally and
- 2:00Speaker 3: my eighteen year old self, yeah, child healing exercise.
- 2:04Speaker 4: And even within that, I think there's the real list
- 2:08Speaker 4: of what I think are her best songs and my
- 2:10Speaker 4: favorite songs, and then my sort of lost troll list
- 2:15Speaker 4: troll list for sure, and on that because on the
- 2:19Speaker 4: realist what I think is the best and my favorite
- 2:22Speaker 4: Lady Gaga song is Dancing the Dark, But on the
- 2:26Speaker 4: joke list, it's aa nothing else I can say. And
- 2:30Speaker 4: I did just see you blow out the vape smoke
- 2:32Speaker 4: because listeners, no.
- 2:34Speaker 1: I'm about to clock her. Tee friend caped and bought
- 2:38Speaker 1: a vape fuck.
- 2:39Speaker 3: Every year right before tall Invasion, I relapse, and this
- 2:44Speaker 3: year is no exception. It's actually called a she lapse,
- 2:47Speaker 3: A she laps Oh my god, she lapsing again. Whereas
- 2:52Speaker 3: I just brought back six of these HQD vapes from
- 2:57Speaker 3: Florida because I are there are single charge. I like
- 3:01Speaker 3: them because you don't have to recharge them, so when
- 3:03Speaker 3: they're done, they're done.
- 3:04Speaker 2: You like them because they're bad for the environment.
- 3:08Speaker 4: I saw a tweet today that was like, you want
- 3:13Speaker 4: me to use a condom single use plastic.
- 3:15Speaker 1: That's bad for the environment. It's true, It is true.
- 3:20Speaker 4: Okay, everyone should be everyone should be fucking raw for
- 3:23Speaker 4: because of climate change.
- 3:26Speaker 3: Grow up and get a doxy prescription and a PREP prescription.
- 3:32Speaker 1: Oh thank you for reminding me that.
- 3:33Speaker 4: When I go to Apacha in next week, I think
- 3:36Speaker 4: I have so much I need to get back.
- 3:38Speaker 1: I need to get back on prep. You have extra doxy?
- 3:42Speaker 2: I do have extra doxy?
- 3:43Speaker 1: Can I have it?
- 3:43Speaker 2: Yes?
- 3:44Speaker 3: But I have to say right here and now, and
- 3:45Speaker 3: this is important for our listeners to hear things that
- 3:47Speaker 3: people don't know about taking doxy as a post exposure
- 3:52Speaker 3: for other various STIs that are not HIV. So things
- 3:57Speaker 3: that I wish I was told. One you really really
- 4:00Speaker 3: really really really cannot have it on an empty stomach.
- 4:03Speaker 3: You will feel so nauseous. You'll feel nauseous even when
- 4:05Speaker 3: you do eat food and drink water. But you must
- 4:09Speaker 3: eat it with have it with food after sex. You
- 4:11Speaker 3: can take it within seventy two hours of having sex,
- 4:15Speaker 3: which I did not know, so you can, you know,
- 4:18Speaker 3: wait those extra days if something happens. But the craziest
- 4:23Speaker 3: like things that I did not know. One, you should
- 4:27Speaker 3: not be in direct sunlight after you take doxy.
- 4:30Speaker 2: What, yes, Why it's bad.
- 4:32Speaker 1: For you in what way?
- 4:35Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 4:36Speaker 3: I don't know, like skin more sensitive or something something.
- 4:41Speaker 3: It's not about skin sensitivity. I think it's about like
- 4:45Speaker 3: heightened lito sensitivity, a heightened like ability to have the
- 4:52Speaker 3: negative impacts of on unprotected sun exposure.
- 4:58Speaker 1: So it is skin sense. It's so you will burn quicker.
- 5:01Speaker 3: Yeah, I don't know if it's that exactly. Just I
- 5:04Speaker 3: just know that you shouldn't.
- 5:06Speaker 1: It's just bad. The second bad, it's just a no no.
- 5:10Speaker 3: The other crazy thing is when you take doxy, you
- 5:13Speaker 3: cannot lie down for an hour because the doxy going
- 5:18Speaker 3: down your esophagus can burn a hole in your stomach.
- 5:23Speaker 4: Oh well, you know, I I do have a rule
- 5:26Speaker 4: for myself that I don't lay down flat for at
- 5:30Speaker 4: least twenty minutes after I eat for that very same reason.
- 5:34Speaker 2: So comebine. There you go, baby, And.
- 5:38Speaker 4: This is why we are both licensed medical doctors.
- 5:42Speaker 2: Yes, welcome to this a medical podcast.
- 5:44Speaker 1: Yeah, we're pivoting. We're pivoting to health.
- 5:48Speaker 2: And also I was sorry, short tangent. I was thinking
- 5:51Speaker 2: the other day.
- 5:52Speaker 3: I was thinking about, you know, the podcast as a whole,
- 5:55Speaker 3: and thinking about like how we're you and I are
- 5:57Speaker 3: constantly like reshaping the content and making this thing big
- 6:00Speaker 3: and deeper and like just a podcast that.
- 6:02Speaker 4: You are deeper, deeper.
- 6:07Speaker 3: And I was like, what are our brand pillars? And
- 6:10Speaker 3: I was kind of like, I think it's like PERV stuff, yes,
- 6:16Speaker 3: trans stuff, yes, nerd stuff, Yes, Like I think those.
- 6:22Speaker 1: Are those are the three pillars.
- 6:24Speaker 3: And maybe actually it's like not the pillars, It's like
- 6:26Speaker 3: those are almost the Ven diagrams. There are angles into
- 6:30Speaker 3: any topic, like whatever topic we get into, it's like
- 6:34Speaker 3: from a perve angle, a transgender angle, a nerd angle.
- 6:38Speaker 2: Or sometimes all three if you're lucky enough, all three.
- 6:42Speaker 4: Yeah, it is the ven diagram where some of some
- 6:44Speaker 4: of the three only interact with each other, some of
- 6:47Speaker 4: them only interact with themselves and sometimes.
- 6:50Speaker 1: They all interact in the middle. Love Perve nerd trans.
- 6:56Speaker 3: Well, well, welcome to like a version of the podcast Herves,
- 7:00Speaker 3: Nerds and Trannings, you know, recruiting live from Brooklyn, New
- 7:04Speaker 3: York City.
- 7:05Speaker 1: And you don't have to be all three, but you
- 7:07Speaker 1: have to be one.
- 7:08Speaker 2: You have to be one diva or you have to have.
- 7:11Speaker 4: Fucked one or yes, you can be a You could
- 7:13Speaker 4: be a nerd chaser, a PERV chaser, or a tranny chaser.
- 7:21Speaker 2: Okay, are there nerd chasers?
- 7:23Speaker 1: Do you think? Like?
- 7:24Speaker 4: Is that like the hot popular girl who likes the
- 7:27Speaker 4: nerdy guy with glasses?
- 7:28Speaker 2: Uh? For sure?
- 7:30Speaker 3: Like I think a literal like decade or two of
- 7:33Speaker 3: like rom com media have conditioned the culture at large
- 7:37Speaker 3: to have like a certain kind of I don't know,
- 7:42Speaker 3: lust for a Clark Kent type or a or a
- 7:47Speaker 3: or an archetype often seen in you know, after school
- 7:52Speaker 3: special media where the ugly girl with glasses and messy
- 7:57Speaker 3: hair takes off her glasses, pulls down her.
- 8:00Speaker 2: And all of a sudden she's a beautiful woman.
- 8:01Speaker 4: But I do think that culturally we've swung around past that,
- 8:05Speaker 4: so now we want them people to put the glasses on,
- 8:07Speaker 4: like the whole concept of the slutty little glasses. Yes,
- 8:10Speaker 4: it's like women men are allowed to put their glasses on,
- 8:13Speaker 4: women must take them off. Yes, like, and that's the patriarchy, honey.
- 8:18Speaker 2: That's the pain.
- 8:19Speaker 1: Well.
- 8:19Speaker 3: I was also gonna say, well, this is like not
- 8:21Speaker 3: in conjunction with what you just said, but I was like,
- 8:23Speaker 3: you know, maybe the culture is kind of like and
- 8:26Speaker 3: Hathaway looked better before.
- 8:29Speaker 2: The makeover montage.
- 8:30Speaker 1: Yes, you know what I mean. Well, that's you know,
- 8:32Speaker 1: that's woke.
- 8:33Speaker 4: Woke tomes, that's hat, that's woke one point Oh you know,
- 8:38Speaker 4: Oh my god, I was watching something the other day
- 8:42Speaker 4: and you could so tell it was made in woke.
- 8:46Speaker 1: One What was it? What was it? Oh?
- 8:48Speaker 4: My mom and I were watching we're watching Shrill, which
- 8:52Speaker 4: is now on Hulu because it's no it's now on Netflix,
- 8:55Speaker 4: and my mom had never seen it and we just
- 8:57Speaker 4: like needed something to watch. It's so woke one point
- 9:01Speaker 4: zero like that only could have been made in that time.
- 9:05Speaker 4: In the Pink Pussy Hot times, her.
- 9:07Speaker 3: Going to the pharmacy counter and learning that the Plan
- 9:10Speaker 3: B doesn't work on people over her weight range.
- 9:12Speaker 4: Yes, like baby, when people were like listen to this Injustice.
- 9:19Speaker 1: Yeah, and now we're like, who cares?
- 9:23Speaker 3: I do remember seeing that scene I think it's the
- 9:25Speaker 3: first episode and being devastated and being like, I can't
- 9:28Speaker 3: believe people. I was like, people need to know this,
- 9:30Speaker 3: that's crazy.
- 9:34Speaker 4: Anyways, now that anyways, now that we're we do fact,
- 9:38Speaker 4: what happens. I don't know that I don't have a
- 9:44Speaker 4: I am fat, but I don't have a uterus.
- 9:47Speaker 1: So what you.
- 9:49Speaker 2: Don't have a uterus? No, you're also whatever?
- 9:52Speaker 1: Well, I mean I was fat.
- 9:56Speaker 4: This is an audio medium, so I guess I do
- 9:58Speaker 4: need to make that clear.
- 10:02Speaker 3: I okay. On our on the topic of honestly this
- 10:07Speaker 3: is related to Woke one and also related to our
- 10:10Speaker 3: brand Pillars. I finally saw Maddie's secret, and you secreted
- 10:15Speaker 3: I secreted. I am like, fuck, what are little Maddie's
- 10:21Speaker 3: Maddie Secret stands called like Maddie Nation, Maddie Hollicks.
- 10:26Speaker 1: Mad Maddie.
- 10:32Speaker 2: What's matt Maddie mad Mad, Maddie.
- 10:35Speaker 4: Madam x's I think secretors. Let's call them secretors. It's
- 10:41Speaker 4: secretors and I and we are secretors. When you talked
- 10:46Speaker 4: about Maddie secret on the show the other week. I
- 10:49Speaker 4: completely underestimated how much I would want to talk about
- 10:54Speaker 4: this show, this movie, and so forgive the verse, forgive
- 10:58Speaker 4: me versions, but like I actually really want to dig
- 11:01Speaker 4: into what I found to be a profoundly layered and
- 11:05Speaker 4: also like shocking cultural object. I was like, I can't
- 11:08Speaker 4: believe this exists, kind of a lightning rod, lightning rod
- 11:12Speaker 4: for many many cultural conversations and the like a virgin
- 11:16Speaker 4: brand pillars.
- 11:17Speaker 2: Yeah, literally literally like nerds, pervs, trainies.
- 11:21Speaker 4: No, honestly, I'm so happy that you had such a
- 11:25Speaker 4: reaction to this.
- 11:27Speaker 3: I like it's funny because Maddie's secret delivered exactly what
- 11:32Speaker 3: was promised to me, which is this lifetime This this
- 11:37Speaker 3: movie with kind of lifetime logic, lifetime movie logic about
- 11:42Speaker 3: John Early, who would be playing a woman that has
- 11:45Speaker 3: as promised to me a kind of surprising emotional turn,
- 11:51Speaker 3: Like I knew all of.
- 11:52Speaker 2: That ahead of time, and yet when it all happened,
- 11:57Speaker 2: I was like, WHOA.
- 11:58Speaker 3: I'm like, there's this movie belongs to like a canon
- 12:03Speaker 3: of movies that I think it's in line with, and
- 12:06Speaker 3: yet this has never been done before ever in my opinion,
- 12:09Speaker 3: like I have have maybe in like different sketches or
- 12:12Speaker 3: like on internet culture, but like I just don't see this.
- 12:17Speaker 4: I think I'm the closest we've ever gotten is Missus Doubtfire,
- 12:20Speaker 4: which I which my mom, which my mom and I
- 12:23Speaker 4: watched the other night.
- 12:24Speaker 3: Well I also saw TUTSI, which like maybe we can
- 12:26Speaker 3: talk about. But like part of the if if I
- 12:29Speaker 3: could like describe my kind of like.
- 12:34Speaker 1: Yeah, what's your thesis on secreting.
- 12:38Speaker 3: It's I will say, it's it's not a statement of
- 12:41Speaker 3: a theory, it's more the thesis. It's a sorry, it's
- 12:45Speaker 3: the thesis statement, which in like when essay writing world,
- 12:48Speaker 3: it's a question, right, and my thematic question for like
- 12:53Speaker 3: us talking about Mattie Maddy's secret and getting into it
- 12:55Speaker 3: is like, as you said, the second John Er is
- 13:00Speaker 3: on screen in that theater.
- 13:02Speaker 2: With high quality, heavy.
- 13:05Speaker 3: Breasts, blonde, human unit, soft, no makeup makeup, Like the
- 13:10Speaker 3: audience is immediately laughing. That was your experience, That was
- 13:13Speaker 3: my experience. Other people who see the movie, that's you
- 13:15Speaker 3: probably your experience.
- 13:17Speaker 2: And one cannot definitively say what the ratio is.
- 13:23Speaker 3: But part of that laughter is due to the sublime
- 13:27Speaker 3: character work of John Early and his comedic ability to
- 13:30Speaker 3: like make you laugh with a single glance. And then
- 13:33Speaker 3: there's another part of that laughter that is, inarguably people
- 13:37Speaker 3: laughing at a man dress as a woman boots, like
- 13:41Speaker 3: inarguably unambiguous that both of those things are unambiguously true.
- 13:45Speaker 3: You cannot argue against so understanding that how do we
- 13:51Speaker 3: negotiate and make sense of comedic material created by men
- 13:56Speaker 3: dressed as women in.
- 13:58Speaker 2: Twenty twenty six, the transgender year of twenty.
- 14:01Speaker 3: Twenty six, in the aftermath of the product The Dolls Era,
- 14:05Speaker 3: et cetera, that I'm watching this movie and it feels
- 14:08Speaker 3: so advanced and layered, and I enjoyed myself and it
- 14:12Speaker 3: felt fresh and new, and I saw it with only
- 14:14Speaker 3: trans people who also enjoyed themselves, and yet walking out
- 14:18Speaker 3: a theater and immediately kind of being like, wait, was
- 14:21Speaker 3: that problematic? Like like truly like all of us being like, wait,
- 14:25Speaker 3: was that problematic? Was that problematic? Obviously my answer is no,
- 14:30Speaker 3: But I'm like, how has it? How did the movie
- 14:33Speaker 3: accomplish what it has accomplished, which is I think it
- 14:37Speaker 3: kind of earned trust with John early.
- 14:39Speaker 2: And also I have.
- 14:40Speaker 3: Seen zero zero sentiment calling it transphobic, Like I've seen
- 14:47Speaker 3: no one problematize it for man dressed as a woman
- 14:52Speaker 3: as main character, like, and that's shocking to me. Not
- 14:57Speaker 3: that I want that to happen. I just say that
- 15:00Speaker 3: it's funny that I Do'm not seeing any of that.
- 15:03Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean, I think you're you're, you really nailed
- 15:06Speaker 4: it with like the trust in John Early, because I
- 15:10Speaker 4: do think that because John is this like niche celebrity
- 15:21Speaker 4: who has you know, like kind of past niche, but
- 15:25Speaker 4: like is so beloved with a certain type of person
- 15:29Speaker 4: that both gives him the earned trust that he can
- 15:34Speaker 4: make this movie and people won't point at him and
- 15:38Speaker 4: say it's transphobic. And I also think that earned trust
- 15:41Speaker 4: is a reason why half of the audience is laughing
- 15:45Speaker 4: the second he's on the screen because in their minds
- 15:48Speaker 4: it's like John Early equals funny. So the second he's
- 15:51Speaker 4: on the screen, they're laughing. But you you are right,
- 15:54Speaker 4: you know, I spoke about this after I saw the film,
- 15:58Speaker 4: you know, sitting in the theater that at least half
- 16:02Speaker 4: of that laughter is just man in dress equals funny.
- 16:08Speaker 4: And I do think that if it was anyone but John,
- 16:14Speaker 4: if this was being made by like some straight guy
- 16:17Speaker 4: from Saturday Night Live. We would absolutely be having a
- 16:21Speaker 4: conversation about this being problematic or outright transphobic, but it's
- 16:26Speaker 4: it's very interesting to see an audience have almost universal
- 16:33Speaker 4: grace for someone doing something that could be interpreted weirdly.
- 16:40Speaker 3: Yes, And also, like I would even argue, like I
- 16:44Speaker 3: don't even want to see another gay guy do this, Like,
- 16:46Speaker 3: and I'm sorry to name check them, but like I
- 16:48Speaker 3: don't want to see this movie by Benny Drama, I
- 16:51Speaker 3: don't want to see this movie by Johnny Sibley. And
- 16:53Speaker 3: I'm only name checking those two because they both got
- 16:55Speaker 3: their star and platform dressing up as women on inta
- 17:00Speaker 3: and doing tiktoks where it's like, haha, this is a
- 17:03Speaker 3: character because.
- 17:04Speaker 2: This woman is an imbecile.
- 17:06Speaker 4: Yes, what I mean, well that because I think again
- 17:10Speaker 4: back to the the trust that John's audience has in him.
- 17:15Speaker 4: They know that what he does, everything that he does,
- 17:19Speaker 4: every project he's ever been a part of, and particularly
- 17:22Speaker 4: the ones that he's been the driving creative force behind,
- 17:26Speaker 4: come from this deep lifelong appreciation of an obsession for women.
- 17:35Speaker 4: I think very similarly to you know the way that
- 17:39Speaker 4: Cole Escola makes work around women. There is a reverence
- 17:46Speaker 4: for femininity there that would that is not there from
- 17:51Speaker 4: someone like a you know, like a I don't know,
- 17:54Speaker 4: like a Jordan Firstman or something like any other any
- 17:57Speaker 4: other of these alt co may.
- 18:00Speaker 3: Gays literally and like obviously like like though Cole is
- 18:06Speaker 3: like not a sis man, Cole is not a sis woman. Yes,
- 18:09Speaker 3: so Cole is still doing characters as someone who is
- 18:12Speaker 3: not them, right, And I do think that it's extreme
- 18:16Speaker 3: like Cole and John's earth Work are extremely like like
- 18:20Speaker 3: I actually want to see Cole make this movie, you
- 18:23Speaker 3: know what I mean, make a movie like this.
- 18:24Speaker 2: Yes, I would.
- 18:25Speaker 3: I'm sure, Oh Mary, the movie is in production, like
- 18:27Speaker 3: I'm sure, I'm positive it's in development.
- 18:29Speaker 2: Positive.
- 18:30Speaker 4: Well, I mean if you look at them, they're in
- 18:32Speaker 4: a way kind of similar stories about this unhinged woman
- 18:37Speaker 4: coming apart at the seams.
- 18:38Speaker 3: Yes, and and and and they're in a part of that.
- 18:42Speaker 3: And maybe that I think this is maybe less true
- 18:44Speaker 3: for Maddi's Secret, we can get into it, but for
- 18:47Speaker 3: Oh Mary, for sure, Mary being an income poop is crucial,
- 18:52Speaker 3: you know what I mean. Maddie is a little bit
- 18:54Speaker 3: of an income poop. But because the movie is on
- 18:58Speaker 3: uh An and a matrix of like because the movie
- 19:04Speaker 3: is lifetime movie logic, it is she's a nincampoop because
- 19:08Speaker 3: it's lifetime and in lifetime movies everyone's kind of an
- 19:11Speaker 3: income poop, you know what I mean?
- 19:12Speaker 4: Yes, since she has to make bad decisions to drive
- 19:15Speaker 4: the plot forward, it's very every outfit calls this glamorous
- 19:20Speaker 4: women having nervous breakdowns. And like these are too, these
- 19:25Speaker 4: two that we're talking about. And thank you for clarifying,
- 19:28Speaker 4: like I wasn't saying. I wasn't making the comparison with
- 19:32Speaker 4: Cole because of for a gender reason, but more like
- 19:35Speaker 4: because of because of the world of the work, the
- 19:39Speaker 4: world that they work in. And yes, like someone because
- 19:42Speaker 4: that is neither of their identities. But they both are
- 19:45Speaker 4: coming from this point of view of just like worshiping
- 19:50Speaker 4: women and womanhood. And I think the cultural idea of
- 19:55Speaker 4: womanhood this archetype of these women behaving bad lee yes,
- 20:01Speaker 4: and and I don't think like they are inviting us
- 20:05Speaker 4: to laugh at them and with them, But I don't
- 20:10Speaker 4: think they're ever asking us to laugh at the idea
- 20:13Speaker 4: of a woman.
- 20:15Speaker 3: Yes, yes, like that is so so tea and like
- 20:20Speaker 3: you know, okay, uh I where where do so something
- 20:27Speaker 3: that I again, like I'm doing the same clarifications you're
- 20:31Speaker 3: doing about like Cole understanding Cole's not a man and
- 20:35Speaker 3: and so but I but I thinking about John and
- 20:38Speaker 3: Maddie's Secret. Do you want to know every single like
- 20:42Speaker 3: all the movies that came to mind? Like, I'm sure
- 20:45Speaker 3: you can think of the same ones. I was like
- 20:47Speaker 3: Missus Stout Fire, Big Mama's House, Norbit Media, Like I
- 20:54Speaker 3: was thinking about the bird Cage. I was thinking about
- 20:56Speaker 3: how I had just seen Tootsie. I thought about Divine
- 21:01Speaker 3: in John Waters films, I thought about white Chicks. I
- 21:04Speaker 3: thought about a lot of like screwball comedy. It's not
- 21:08Speaker 3: everything I named as as screwball comedy, but I thought
- 21:10Speaker 3: about a lot of screwball comedies.
- 21:13Speaker 4: I think Medea is like maybe even the closest one
- 21:18Speaker 4: to one, because in all those other films you have
- 21:21Speaker 4: a man who over the course of the film transforms
- 21:24Speaker 4: into a woman, and yet like Medea is the one
- 21:29Speaker 4: in this cultural tradition of just or like Hairspray, a
- 21:33Speaker 4: man playing a woman, and like it works in Hairspray
- 21:37Speaker 4: because of the context of Hairspray, the context of John
- 21:42Speaker 4: Waters and its legacy. I think that's why Maddy's Secret
- 21:47Speaker 4: is more in the legacy of something like Hairspray than
- 21:50Speaker 4: like Medea, even though if you look at them Media
- 21:54Speaker 4: and Maddie's Secret or I mean, I've only seen like
- 21:57Speaker 4: parts of a media movie, but like kind of the
- 21:59Speaker 4: same idea. It's like this specific kind of like family
- 22:05Speaker 4: drama that is made funny by the fact that the
- 22:08Speaker 4: person playing the lead woman is a man is a man.
- 22:12Speaker 3: Like and and I and I bring up these movies
- 22:16Speaker 3: like not to conflate it with Matty's Secret, because they're
- 22:20Speaker 3: not at all to me like similar, Like they're not
- 22:25Speaker 3: even though they have the same organizing principle, they have
- 22:29Speaker 3: completely different motivations, completely different audiences, right, and like but
- 22:34Speaker 3: I but I was just kind of like, how on
- 22:37Speaker 3: earth do I watch something like Maddi's Secret and it's
- 22:40Speaker 3: not norbit you know what I mean, Like, it's not
- 22:44Speaker 3: like you know what I mean? And I, Yeah, there
- 22:46Speaker 3: were so many things about it where I was like,
- 22:48Speaker 3: how was that accomplished? But Okay, it really does.
- 22:53Speaker 4: It really does speak to the work that that John
- 22:58Speaker 4: put into writing, directing, starring in this film, and I
- 23:02Speaker 4: think the commitment he has had throughout the course of
- 23:06Speaker 4: his career to making only the kind of work he
- 23:10Speaker 4: wants to make and that he would want to see.
- 23:13Speaker 3: Yes, and and and if you know, if you're familiar.
- 23:17Speaker 3: I also thought about I was like, what on earth
- 23:19Speaker 3: is a non John Early fan doing here? Like I
- 23:21Speaker 3: was like, if you're not a John Early fan, are
- 23:23Speaker 3: you receiving this movie differently if you don't have that
- 23:25Speaker 3: earned trust from John really whatever, That's like a separate question.
- 23:28Speaker 4: But I think there's maybe like John Early fans who
- 23:32Speaker 4: saw that movie Eternity that he was in earlier this
- 23:37Speaker 4: year and were like, oh, I like him. Look he's
- 23:39Speaker 4: in a movie, or like people people who you know,
- 23:43Speaker 4: watched people watch Search Party, but like haven't seen any
- 23:48Speaker 4: of his more obscure work, like have never seen you know,
- 23:51Speaker 4: the show Girls video, like that kind of stuff. Like there,
- 23:56Speaker 4: I think there's like because in recent years he has
- 24:00Speaker 4: broken out to more mainstream success. I do think it's
- 24:04Speaker 4: like there are some people who were not necessarily like
- 24:07Speaker 4: supposed to be at the party, but they wound up
- 24:09Speaker 4: here somehow.
- 24:11Speaker 3: Yeah, well, okay, I'm glad you said show Girls because
- 24:16Speaker 3: I think that understanding John Early's relationship to show Girls
- 24:20Speaker 3: is actually critical to the success of this film, as it,
- 24:24Speaker 3: in my opinion, non misogynistic cultural object because if anybody,
- 24:29Speaker 3: if you, if you, John Early is obsessed with show Girls.
- 24:32Speaker 2: It's like his favorite movie.
- 24:33Speaker 3: If you don't know that, and he does a really
- 24:38Speaker 3: beautiful recreation of what is it the first ten minutes
- 24:41Speaker 3: or a ten minute.
- 24:41Speaker 1: It's it's the dance sequence.
- 24:43Speaker 3: I think it's a shot I shot recreation of the
- 24:46Speaker 3: dance sequence of a dance sequence in Showgirls. It is
- 24:49Speaker 3: a master work, you masterpiece. You must watch it on
- 24:53Speaker 3: YouTube if you haven't seen it.
- 24:55Speaker 1: It's like better than the actual movie.
- 24:57Speaker 3: It is well Rose Famous hates the movie.
- 25:01Speaker 1: I'm not a fan of Showgirls.
- 25:03Speaker 3: I have only seen it once. Oh no, no, I've
- 25:06Speaker 3: seen it twice if you're counting the time that it
- 25:09Speaker 3: was turned on at a theater at a high school
- 25:13Speaker 3: theater cast.
- 25:14Speaker 1: Party, and I am counting that, and I am counting that.
- 25:18Speaker 3: But if you understand John Early's relationship to show Girls,
- 25:22Speaker 3: I think it actually really really helped me understand why
- 25:27Speaker 3: Maddi's Secret is successful. When any person, any like average
- 25:31Speaker 3: audience member watches Showgirls, you have no sympathy for that character. Sorry, like,
- 25:37Speaker 3: nor no Me, no white camera, what no Me Malone?
- 25:42Speaker 3: You have no sympathy for No Me Malone. She's an idiot,
- 25:46Speaker 3: damsel archetype. She is in a world of buffoonery. The
- 25:52Speaker 3: things happening are super duper not real, hyper sexualized. You
- 25:57Speaker 3: do not have sympathy for this character. And I think
- 26:01Speaker 3: watched this film and immediately had sympathy for this woman.
- 26:06Speaker 3: And so it's almost like John said, Okay, you know
- 26:10Speaker 3: all those crazy, stupid, like buffoonery movies that you used
- 26:13Speaker 3: to watch and thought women were so stupid. Oh you
- 26:16Speaker 3: know when you saw like Showgirls or you saw that
- 26:20Speaker 3: Lifetime movie and you thought she was an idiot. I
- 26:23Speaker 3: think John makes the film Maddie Secret, and he asks
- 26:27Speaker 3: what could it look like for you to sympathize for
- 26:29Speaker 3: a woman you thought to be a buffoon you know
- 26:32Speaker 3: what I mean?
- 26:33Speaker 1: Totally?
- 26:33Speaker 4: And just look at the the kind of woman he picked. Yes,
- 26:38Speaker 4: he picked a beautiful, blonde influencer living in Los Angeles,
- 26:44Speaker 4: And I actually think it's kind of genius because this
- 26:48Speaker 4: is the kind of person who the only way I
- 26:51Speaker 4: would ever sympathize with this woman is if she was
- 26:54Speaker 4: played with by John Early.
- 26:55Speaker 3: Yeah, And because so here's the other here's a a
- 27:00Speaker 3: layer in the conversation is that, yes, she's beautiful. However, however,
- 27:11Speaker 3: and I'm sorry, and I think John would agree with me,
- 27:17Speaker 3: the part of the film's comedy in the character work
- 27:21Speaker 3: does equivocally hinge.
- 27:24Speaker 2: On Maddie being a kind of bricky woman. You know,
- 27:28Speaker 2: that's true.
- 27:29Speaker 4: It is true because everyone's always talking about how perfect
- 27:32Speaker 4: and beautiful she is.
- 27:33Speaker 2: Yes, that's what.
- 27:34Speaker 3: Yes, yeah, And so her brickiness is actually a necessary
- 27:39Speaker 3: platform on the comedy.
- 27:41Speaker 2: Which complicates the transphobia argument. Conversation, you know what I mean.
- 27:46Speaker 4: I know it's like she's cocky t shop, but it's
- 27:48Speaker 4: for a reason.
- 27:49Speaker 2: There is a purpose, there's and.
- 27:52Speaker 3: I know that John maybe can acknowledge that to some
- 27:55Speaker 3: extent because there was an interview he gave where he
- 27:57Speaker 3: was talking about how as a direct or an organizer,
- 28:00Speaker 3: just that the creator, the creator of the project in
- 28:03Speaker 3: addition to the star, he would be giving people directions,
- 28:08Speaker 3: sometimes making like harsh notes or doing things that you
- 28:10Speaker 3: have to do as the He's not the director, I misspoke,
- 28:14Speaker 3: but he like as the creator.
- 28:17Speaker 2: And then he would look in the mirror and be like,
- 28:19Speaker 2: oh my.
- 28:19Speaker 3: God, how can anyone take me seriously Like he said that,
- 28:23Speaker 3: and I'm like, oh, that's so you know that you
- 28:26Speaker 3: look to some extent ridiculous like and and yeah, that's
- 28:31Speaker 3: the that that that was something where I was kind
- 28:33Speaker 3: of like, what do I do with that? What do
- 28:34Speaker 3: I do with the brickiness of this? And how I
- 28:37Speaker 3: I have no choice but to think about modern modern
- 28:42Speaker 3: like contemporary trans identity like trademark trans you know what
- 28:45Speaker 3: I mean, Like that's transgender in something, not that I'm
- 28:49Speaker 3: not saying the film is textually sort of trans. And
- 28:51Speaker 3: I also wouldn't encourage anyone to look for transgender subjects.
- 28:54Speaker 2: I kind of think that.
- 28:55Speaker 3: No, it's not out, it's not, but I do think
- 28:57Speaker 3: that tanness is our angle.
- 29:00Speaker 1: Yeah, I think it's it's more.
- 29:03Speaker 4: I really like the way that you're approaching this because
- 29:06Speaker 4: like we're we're like talking about the film, but we're
- 29:09Speaker 4: also not talking about the film. We're more talking about
- 29:12Speaker 4: what does it say about I think the place of
- 29:18Speaker 4: trans people in contemporary culture in this like post tipping point,
- 29:24Speaker 4: post woke point one, post not post woke is over world?
- 29:30Speaker 1: Like how how do we have.
- 29:31Speaker 4: These kind of nuanced conversations because like I do think
- 29:35Speaker 4: it's okay for the for the humor to come from
- 29:41Speaker 4: Maddie being clocky t shop because we are to understand
- 29:46Speaker 4: she's not a trans woman and we are not supposed
- 29:48Speaker 4: to think of her that way. She's just gender, she's
- 29:51Speaker 4: cis gender.
- 29:52Speaker 2: She fakes her own pregnancy.
- 29:54Speaker 3: Yes, yeah, it was so interesting to me, Like I like,
- 30:04Speaker 3: I also would love to hear from people that saw
- 30:07Speaker 3: Mattie Secret and didn't like it, because I haven't really
- 30:09Speaker 3: found one yet, but I know they.
- 30:11Speaker 2: I'm sure they exist.
- 30:13Speaker 4: Yes, we want dissenting opinions, except if you're going to
- 30:15Speaker 4: say that Eric ra Hill, who plays Maddie's husband, isn't
- 30:19Speaker 4: one of the hottest men I've ever seen, because I
- 30:21Speaker 4: will not, I will not hear it. He every time
- 30:25Speaker 4: he appeared on screen in that movie, I wanted to
- 30:28Speaker 4: smash through the wall like the kool Aid man.
- 30:32Speaker 3: Yes, he is so fine, brilliantly cast. I also like, uh,
- 30:38Speaker 3: they're also like kind of there's a there's like some
- 30:42Speaker 3: in intersections.
- 30:44Speaker 2: Of comedy that I think were uniquely positioned for me
- 30:46Speaker 2: to enjoy.
- 30:47Speaker 3: I enjoy things that feel kind of like they're making
- 30:50Speaker 3: fun of bricky women, and so I like that you
- 30:53Speaker 3: know what I mean, Like, I like that there that
- 30:55Speaker 3: was in the film and the film also.
- 30:58Speaker 1: Thank you for being an ally to the brick community.
- 31:01Speaker 2: Protect the bricks, honey.
- 31:04Speaker 3: But it also like played with this thing that you know, obviously,
- 31:07Speaker 3: transidentity is hilarious. The other thing that I'll bring you
- 31:12Speaker 3: women are hilarious. The other thing that is, yes, we
- 31:15Speaker 3: are one of the other really really funny comedic territories
- 31:19Speaker 3: that I have not seen someone trod into.
- 31:22Speaker 2: Eating disorders are so funny, like.
- 31:27Speaker 4: Hilarious and like I can and I can agree with
- 31:30Speaker 4: that as someone who has lifelong struggled with them.
- 31:35Speaker 2: Yes, same, I mean not lifelong.
- 31:37Speaker 3: Well, I guess I had a kind of renewed eating
- 31:39Speaker 3: disorder in my gainer era in Los Angeles, but that
- 31:43Speaker 3: was a different regardless, it's the I was shocked at
- 31:48Speaker 3: the eating. The thing that I did not expect actually
- 31:50Speaker 3: is that the eating disorder was never used for comedic material,
- 31:54Speaker 3: like the things around it, like the clinic that she
- 31:57Speaker 3: was sent to.
- 31:59Speaker 1: And I love the clinic.
- 32:01Speaker 2: The girl interrupted like and.
- 32:03Speaker 1: Her like three girlfriends. Yes, they were so funny.
- 32:08Speaker 3: Like but I they never showed the vomiting like they
- 32:12Speaker 3: really did. I was I was surprised to see like
- 32:18Speaker 3: the tact around actually having Maddie have a severe eating disorder,
- 32:28Speaker 3: while also like not may not really making fun of
- 32:31Speaker 3: people with eating disorders, you know what I mean? Like
- 32:33Speaker 3: it it felt, as I said earlier, the movie forces
- 32:38Speaker 3: you to sympathize with her and with people that like
- 32:42Speaker 3: deal with this, you know what I mean? Yes, but yeah,
- 32:46Speaker 3: I'm my I mostly like, even though it's a vague
- 32:51Speaker 3: kind of like conclusion, I mostly was kind of like,
- 32:55Speaker 3: if this movie had been made, let's say, I'm time
- 33:00Speaker 3: closer to the transgender tipping point, the quote unquote transgender
- 33:03Speaker 3: tipping point and what was that twenty fifteen or.
- 33:07Speaker 2: Something like that, I don't remember.
- 33:08Speaker 3: Yeah, I think this movie would have been problematized in
- 33:14Speaker 3: a more severe way.
- 33:16Speaker 4: Absolutely, there would have been so many Mike dot com
- 33:23Speaker 4: think pieces about it.
- 33:25Speaker 3: Them to us would have had a field day. It
- 33:28Speaker 3: would not have been the glowing Michael qb review that
- 33:30Speaker 3: we saw. Okay, you know what I mean. But yeah,
- 33:34Speaker 3: I was thinking about that, and I was thinking about
- 33:37Speaker 3: how my hope is that the culture is primed for
- 33:42Speaker 3: us to enjoy gender comedy.
- 33:47Speaker 4: I hope so too, because the thing is, I do
- 33:51Speaker 4: want to see a version of this movie in which
- 33:55Speaker 4: the main character is trans, Yes, and their brickiness is
- 34:00Speaker 4: part of the humor. Yes, but like in a you know,
- 34:04Speaker 4: for us kind of way.
- 34:06Speaker 2: Yeah, I would love that.
- 34:07Speaker 3: And and also like, even though I don't want like
- 34:11Speaker 3: gig guys making fun of bricks, I will say, and
- 34:14Speaker 3: I know that John isn't making fun of transoment of
- 34:16Speaker 3: this film, So I'm just gonna like take a step
- 34:18Speaker 3: out and talk about like comedians at large. If if
- 34:22Speaker 3: a gay guy comedian like Caleb Hearn, for example, who
- 34:26Speaker 3: does make jokes about trans people, if the joke is.
- 34:29Speaker 2: Funny, okay, I'll laugh.
- 34:32Speaker 3: And also another inter I think critical layer in that
- 34:36Speaker 3: is Homegirl is in community with trans people, a lot
- 34:40Speaker 3: of transvesties, a lot of trans collaborators, and he has
- 34:47Speaker 3: he has given himself permission or I don't know if
- 34:50Speaker 3: that's actually how he would phrase it, but the permission
- 34:53Speaker 3: is kind of granted, maybe in part because he's doing
- 34:56Speaker 3: this off mike, off camera with his friends directly to
- 34:59Speaker 3: their face, you know what I mean, Because it's funny,
- 35:01Speaker 3: and he's earned that trust with John Early, who made
- 35:05Speaker 3: a movie with Beta Hamil, who is in community with
- 35:07Speaker 3: trans people. I think there's a version of the same
- 35:09Speaker 3: thing there going on. But yeah, anyways, I really love
- 35:14Speaker 3: I love this movie, and I really really hope that
- 35:17Speaker 3: it means that the culture is prime for even though
- 35:20Speaker 3: this movie is not trans, like, I hope it means
- 35:24Speaker 3: that the culture is primed for things that feel like
- 35:27Speaker 3: they could be comedically hairy territory for transgender people.
- 35:33Speaker 1: Harry, because trans women are hairy.
- 35:35Speaker 2: Yes, and that's what I meant.
- 35:38Speaker 4: I do really like that you codified. I think this
- 35:42Speaker 4: new era of transvisibility as the post to protect the
- 35:49Speaker 4: dolls area era, because I actually do think that's like
- 35:56Speaker 4: as big culturally as call me.
- 35:59Speaker 2: Kate, Yes, oh girl, babes.
- 36:03Speaker 1: And it is.
- 36:04Speaker 4: It is so indicative of the time we are in
- 36:10Speaker 4: trans acceptance or whatever. It's like trans people still, trans
- 36:17Speaker 4: people are now back to existing as an object to
- 36:20Speaker 4: be protected and talked about and debated rather than people
- 36:26Speaker 4: telling their own stories.
- 36:28Speaker 3: Yeah, like I it's it's even though it's not exactly
- 36:32Speaker 3: the same thing. Like I would be interested to see,
- 36:36Speaker 3: like I'm not saying a reboot, but like I would
- 36:38Speaker 3: be interested to see what missus doubtfire or a TUTSI
- 36:42Speaker 3: looks like in twenty twenty six, Like.
- 36:45Speaker 2: I watched Titsy Yeah, and I was like, damn.
- 36:47Speaker 4: I kind of like that movie to write the Missus
- 36:51Speaker 4: Doubtfire reboot.
- 36:53Speaker 2: No, the reboot would be so we.
- 36:56Speaker 4: Let's write, let's write respect, let's write a specscript. So
- 37:00Speaker 4: it's like, yeah, mar Wilson has grown up and she's
- 37:04Speaker 4: now going to become mister doubt Fire.
- 37:09Speaker 2: And she's getting married to carl who is playing a
- 37:17Speaker 2: man as well.
- 37:18Speaker 1: She didn't.
- 37:20Speaker 4: I'm just saying, God, let's get a bricky rom come
- 37:25Speaker 4: starring Carlos Sophia.
- 37:26Speaker 1: I guess gone.
- 37:27Speaker 2: I would love to write a movie for Carlos Sophia.
- 37:30Speaker 2: I guess I say that was zero irony.
- 37:33Speaker 4: I'm just like imagining you at can like on stage
- 37:37Speaker 4: with like the little headphones on that they wear, with
- 37:39Speaker 4: the mic in front of them, You and Carlas Sophia,
- 37:43Speaker 4: Like that image would go so hard on a certain
- 37:48Speaker 4: section of Twitter.
- 37:49Speaker 1: Oh my god, oh my god.
- 37:52Speaker 3: Oh okay, yeah, thank you for indulging me. I was like,
- 37:56Speaker 3: I literally was like, I watched Disclosure again. I was
- 37:59Speaker 3: like thinking about so many different things.
- 38:01Speaker 4: Was no.
- 38:03Speaker 2: I rewatched Disclosure. I was reminded of.
- 38:05Speaker 1: Like Disclosure Day, the adaptation of Disclosure.
- 38:10Speaker 2: Literally the Disclosure Reboot. Yeah, I was I was.
- 38:16Speaker 3: The only note from that film experience was the reminder
- 38:19Speaker 3: that Zachary Junker points to Hollywoodlawn and Candy Darling and
- 38:23Speaker 3: Andy Warhol's movies, which I've never seen because I under
- 38:26Speaker 3: from what I understand, they're bad, but that Holly and
- 38:31Speaker 3: Candy play women where the trans identity is never discussed,
- 38:37Speaker 3: you know what I mean. And I was like, Oh,
- 38:40Speaker 3: that's interesting, but it's not gender comedy, so it's not
- 38:43Speaker 3: really relevant to the conversation.
- 38:45Speaker 4: The trans identity was never discussed, kind of like me
- 38:48Speaker 4: at my Grandma's wake.
- 38:51Speaker 3: Also as a total signe not putting a pin, you
- 38:54Speaker 3: and I should do a bonus episode on im Kate
- 38:57Speaker 3: the series, because season one and two are so fucking
- 39:01Speaker 3: good and rewarding to watch.
- 39:02Speaker 2: In the year twenty twenty six, we have to watch
- 39:05Speaker 2: those again.
- 39:06Speaker 4: I was thinking when I was watching Missus Doutfire with
- 39:08Speaker 4: my mom the other night that I would really love
- 39:10Speaker 4: a T shirt that is the Vanity Fair I Am Kate,
- 39:15Speaker 4: but it's Missus Doubtfire and it says call me Euphigenia,
- 39:20Speaker 4: call me Euphagenia. So if someone make that an added
- 39:23Speaker 4: to your Etsy store, and I will buy at least
- 39:26Speaker 4: two shirts for.
- 39:28Speaker 3: A friend and I even if it's an AI generated No, no,
- 39:32Speaker 3: no stout fire, no a panty the silk corset.
- 39:37Speaker 4: No AI art only art, only real protect queer art.
- 39:44Speaker 3: Okay, with what time we have left, ros, we have
- 39:49Speaker 3: a lot of things that are in our agenda. We'll
- 39:51Speaker 3: have to bump some stuff to next week. Yeah, I
- 39:54Speaker 3: know you saw the Odyssey homework for me. We're going
- 39:56Speaker 3: to discuss the Odyssey, probably at length next week.
- 40:00Speaker 4: Yes, And I just want to give a little homework
- 40:03Speaker 4: just for you fran and virgins to have in their
- 40:08Speaker 4: mind if they haven't seen it yet, or just to
- 40:10Speaker 4: prepare for our discussion. I would really like everyone to
- 40:14Speaker 4: think about the fact that for a movie that takes
- 40:18Speaker 4: place in ancient Greece.
- 40:19Speaker 1: There is.
- 40:21Speaker 4: Like zero queerness. This is like the least gay movie
- 40:25Speaker 4: ever made.
- 40:27Speaker 2: Stupid. Also, you guys ruled the planet then?
- 40:30Speaker 1: Yeah?
- 40:30Speaker 2: Literally, and that's not an understatement.
- 40:32Speaker 4: Keep your eyes open for Elliott Page, and I think
- 40:37Speaker 4: just think about what the film has to say about
- 40:40Speaker 4: our current social political landscape, specifically in America, but also
- 40:48Speaker 4: the world at large.
- 40:49Speaker 3: Love a thematic question, I will be we will be
- 40:52Speaker 3: getting ourselves to the theater this weekend.
- 40:54Speaker 2: And then if I can get a ticket.
- 40:56Speaker 4: Yes, I think because the season just ended, I do
- 40:58Speaker 4: want to do just like final thoughts on the Vampire
- 41:01Speaker 4: less stats.
- 41:03Speaker 2: More despair, I assume.
- 41:06Speaker 4: Yeah, now that this season is over, I can definitively
- 41:12Speaker 4: say that I was altogether disappointed. There were a lot
- 41:18Speaker 4: of things about the season that really worked for me.
- 41:21Speaker 4: Sam Reid's performance. It's like, I hate when people say, like,
- 41:26Speaker 4: oh my god, he wasn't acting, he became the character,
- 41:29Speaker 4: because I do think that like denigrates all of the
- 41:31Speaker 4: work and craft that goes into it. And you can
- 41:34Speaker 4: see this is a performance that has so much craft
- 41:37Speaker 4: put into it. But and also it's like this man
- 41:41Speaker 4: was experiencing a kind of religious mania, except instead of Jesus,
- 41:47Speaker 4: it was Lestat and Anna Rice he was channeling. But
- 41:55Speaker 4: you know, it just there also was a kind of
- 41:59Speaker 4: trans moment in the final episode during kind of my
- 42:03Speaker 4: least favorite moment of the season, in which Louis dead
- 42:09Speaker 4: brother Paul appears to Lestat to give him advice. In
- 42:14Speaker 4: what I think could be interpreted is kind of falling
- 42:18Speaker 4: in within the magical Negro trope, and a lot has
- 42:22Speaker 4: been said by people more qualified than me about this
- 42:25Speaker 4: season's relationship to race in comparison with previous seasons.
- 42:31Speaker 1: But in that scene, Paul, who in life.
- 42:34Speaker 4: Was deeply, deeply, deeply religious, says to Lestat I still
- 42:38Speaker 4: wish you were a woman in talking about his relationship
- 42:41Speaker 4: with his brother, and lestat says me too sometimes, and
- 42:45Speaker 4: I really appreciated that.
- 42:47Speaker 1: Gag.
- 42:49Speaker 2: I wish I was a woman too.
- 42:51Speaker 1: Yeah, okay.
- 42:53Speaker 4: Season four has still not been confirmed, although Rolin Jones,
- 42:57Speaker 4: the creator and showrunner, has said to that season four
- 43:02Speaker 4: would obviously adopt the events of the next novel in
- 43:07Speaker 4: the series, Queen of the Damned, while also adapting a
- 43:09Speaker 4: lot of what was left out of this season of
- 43:14Speaker 4: The Vampire Lastat. So maybe some of my issues with
- 43:17Speaker 4: the storytelling this season will be resolved in a season four.
- 43:21Speaker 4: That being said, I don't think you should have to
- 43:24Speaker 4: get through a season of a show to better material.
- 43:30Speaker 4: I just think some of I just think the creative
- 43:33Speaker 4: choices I appreciate. And Lestatte even says something in the
- 43:38Speaker 4: season finale, He says, at least I tried, you know,
- 43:42Speaker 4: at least I tried to do something, and I do
- 43:45Speaker 4: think like with this season, they tried something. They were like,
- 43:48Speaker 4: let's do a silly one and it didn't come out
- 43:53Speaker 4: quite as good as we all hoped, and that's disappointing.
- 43:56Speaker 4: But I think, as I said last week, a quote
- 44:01Speaker 4: unquote bad and I'm not calling the season bad, but
- 44:03Speaker 4: a bad season of Interview with the Vampire is still
- 44:06Speaker 4: better than most of what's on television. So wow, you know,
- 44:11Speaker 4: still a win.
- 44:12Speaker 2: Still a win for the Empires out there.
- 44:16Speaker 4: It's also a low key chop. It's a chop like
- 44:20Speaker 4: me at the airport yesterday.
- 44:22Speaker 3: I yeah, I oh yeah. I also okay, I know
- 44:28Speaker 3: you wanted to talk about doomsday.
- 44:31Speaker 1: Yes, did you watch the trailer?
- 44:33Speaker 2: I didn't. I'm gonna watch it right now.
- 44:36Speaker 1: Oh, let's watch it live.
- 44:37Speaker 2: Okay, I'm watching it right now.
- 44:38Speaker 3: Okay, fab and you can you can Okay, I've clicked play.
- 44:42Speaker 2: Something's coming.
- 44:43Speaker 4: Okay, So it is. I will say this is the
- 44:47Speaker 4: most soulless, craven money grubbing movie ever made. It's the
- 44:57Speaker 4: concept of doctor Doom being the thing that brings all
- 45:01Speaker 4: of these people to who don't know each other together
- 45:05Speaker 4: and that they're also supposed to see him as this existential,
- 45:08Speaker 4: universe ending threat that has not been set up in
- 45:12Speaker 4: any previous Marvel movies, especially as a.
- 45:15Speaker 3: Follow up to Motherfucking What was the What was theos Fanos.
- 45:22Speaker 4: Thanos who was seated in Marvel films for a decade
- 45:27Speaker 4: before appearing on screen, And yes, like, because of the history,
- 45:30Speaker 4: we know Jonathan Major's was supposed to be the villain
- 45:34Speaker 4: of the Avengers movies, and then when he got canceled Disney,
- 45:39Speaker 4: he was no, he was gonna be kang. It was
- 45:43Speaker 4: gonna be a whole different storyline. And instead of just
- 45:46Speaker 4: recasting him, they were like, let's get Robert down Let's
- 45:51Speaker 4: get our DJ back, because we think because Marvel has
- 45:55Speaker 4: fallen out of favor and we are cowards, so we're
- 45:58Speaker 4: just going to bring back Steve Rogers and Steve Rodgers
- 46:03Speaker 4: and Robert Downey Jr. Oh, it's so soulless and disgusting.
- 46:09Speaker 4: I also, there are a lot of reports out about
- 46:14Speaker 4: the alleged plot of this film, and based on some
- 46:19Speaker 4: things that we've seen, including a costume that just appeared
- 46:23Speaker 4: at San Diego Comic Con, it does sound like these
- 46:28Speaker 4: descriptions of the plot could be very true, and if
- 46:32Speaker 4: they are, this movie's gonna blow, but might end in
- 46:37Speaker 4: a way that you and I specifically will thoroughly enjoy.
- 46:41Speaker 4: Wait why because there's a rumor that Miss Wanda Maximoff
- 46:46Speaker 4: is returning.
- 46:48Speaker 2: She's going to she she didn't die.
- 46:51Speaker 1: She did died.
- 46:52Speaker 2: We didn't see her body.
- 46:53Speaker 1: Sorry, we didn't.
- 46:55Speaker 4: You don't And even if we did, like it's their
- 46:57Speaker 4: comic books, who cares?
- 46:59Speaker 2: Where is the body? Yeah.
- 47:01Speaker 3: If there's one thing a comic franchise is gonna do,
- 47:03Speaker 3: it's unkill someone well.
- 47:05Speaker 4: Like Magdido just died on season two of X Men
- 47:09Speaker 4: ninety seven, and I know his ass is coming back.
- 47:11Speaker 2: Yeah, he's coming back.
- 47:13Speaker 1: They never stayed dead.
- 47:14Speaker 3: I mean, Professor Xavier has died like seventeen hundred times.
- 47:19Speaker 4: We also the I mean, I think the biggest news
- 47:22Speaker 4: news story in my world from this Avengers doomsday trailer. Yeah,
- 47:27Speaker 4: what was mystique's fuck ass?
- 47:29Speaker 3: Wig?
- 47:31Speaker 2: Oh? Yeah, it's not right.
- 47:33Speaker 4: It's not right, and nor is it okay they did
- 47:37Speaker 4: my sister dirty.
- 47:39Speaker 2: It's not right. It should be wetter, it should be wet.
- 47:42Speaker 4: It should be honestly, I kind of right now have
- 47:45Speaker 4: Mystique's haircut from the original Fox x Men films where
- 47:49Speaker 4: it's like, you know, like a slicked back red, like
- 47:52Speaker 4: short red moment, and like just do that, just do that.
- 47:58Speaker 4: Just give her a few like give her a house
- 48:01Speaker 4: of the Dragon level unit.
- 48:03Speaker 2: Like we will be watching oh in the first weekend. Yes, unfortunately, Yeah,
- 48:10Speaker 2: I mean we have much to say about it.
- 48:13Speaker 1: Probably knows who.
- 48:17Speaker 4: Just bringing Steve Rogers back in and of itself, he
- 48:21Speaker 4: already got one of the worst endings of a character
- 48:25Speaker 4: in this franchise, and then to reverse that to bring
- 48:28Speaker 4: him back for this bullshit disgusts me.
- 48:32Speaker 2: Disgusts me.
- 48:35Speaker 3: I just I don't I don't get it. I'm yeah,
- 48:39Speaker 3: but I mean I understand it on a capital from
- 48:42Speaker 3: a capitalist framework. Uh.
- 48:44Speaker 4: There has been some more rumored casting around the X
- 48:48Speaker 4: Men movie reboots. One of the names in the mix
- 48:52Speaker 4: to play Professor X is Bill Scarsguard, which I think
- 48:56Speaker 4: would be fierce.
- 48:57Speaker 1: Oh.
- 48:58Speaker 2: I want to see his asspald, Yeah, want to see
- 49:00Speaker 2: his ass, bald. I want to see those gooey eyes.
- 49:02Speaker 1: And I know he'd find a way to get his
- 49:04Speaker 1: cock out.
- 49:05Speaker 2: He'd get his cock out for sure.
- 49:11Speaker 3: I was gonna say I, uh watch an interview with No. Actually,
- 49:20Speaker 3: I shouldn't say this. I was gonna speculate about somebody's
- 49:23Speaker 3: sexuality once.
- 49:24Speaker 2: More, and I actually don't think we can do that
- 49:25Speaker 2: on the main but we'll talk about it another time.
- 49:28Speaker 2: Let's not talk about it right now.
- 49:30Speaker 3: But you know how, I think we should just know
- 49:32Speaker 3: that I'm speculating about someone's sexuality. I think maybe subscribe
- 49:35Speaker 3: to patreon dot com slash like a version for the
- 49:38Speaker 3: full story.
- 49:39Speaker 4: For for the to wrap up this episode, I would
- 49:43Speaker 4: love for you to.
- 49:45Speaker 1: I would love to give you.
- 49:46Speaker 4: The space to just rant for a couple of minutes
- 49:48Speaker 4: about something I'm not gonna watch, right, so tell.
- 49:52Speaker 2: Me how critical? Uh A very critical tradition.
- 49:55Speaker 4: Yes, so it's sort of a new maybe like segment
- 49:58Speaker 4: were introducing. I no, no like, but yeah, because you know,
- 50:03Speaker 4: we occasionally will watch, read listen to things the other
- 50:07Speaker 4: really has no interest in, and in the spirit of
- 50:10Speaker 4: the show, I think there should be a space for
- 50:12Speaker 4: us to educate the other person on them. So Fran,
- 50:16Speaker 4: please fill me in on what's going on on Project Runway.
- 50:20Speaker 3: Project Runway has returned for its seventy eighth.
- 50:24Speaker 2: Season and the I love it.
- 50:29Speaker 3: It's like almost appointment television for me, Like I'm watching
- 50:34Speaker 3: it the day it comes out. I'm not going to
- 50:37Speaker 3: say that it's quality reality television, but it is more
- 50:42Speaker 3: fun to watch than drag Race, I'll.
- 50:44Speaker 2: Tell you that.
- 50:45Speaker 1: But does it have Joey j.
- 50:47Speaker 3: It does not have Joey ja Oh, justice for Joey J.
- 50:50Speaker 3: I could talk about that for another ten minutes. Justice
- 50:53Speaker 3: from other fucking joeyj.
- 50:54Speaker 2: King queen quing quing.
- 50:58Speaker 3: But Project Runway has, if you haven't heard, placed Tyra
- 51:04Speaker 3: Banks on the judges panel in a permanent seat.
- 51:07Speaker 2: Wow, did you know that? I twenty twenty six.
- 51:10Speaker 4: I did not know that it was permanent. That's kind
- 51:13Speaker 4: of a cuckoo banana's choice.
- 51:15Speaker 2: To make Tyra Banks and law roach on the same
- 51:19Speaker 2: judges panel.
- 51:20Speaker 4: I need to know if this this must have been
- 51:22Speaker 4: filmed before the top model of documentary tender and when
- 51:26Speaker 4: and when that broke, I know, someone got fired.
- 51:29Speaker 2: Someone got fired. And then also they were like, this
- 51:32Speaker 2: is going to be so good for ratings because of that.
- 51:34Speaker 2: Look Tyra, I'm not gonna lie.
- 51:36Speaker 3: It's not really saying anything on the judges panel. She's
- 51:38Speaker 3: not interesting. She can barely coher a sentence a lot
- 51:41Speaker 3: of the time. But I am listening to everything she's saying.
- 51:46Speaker 4: You're listening, you're taking notes. I did see a crazy
- 51:50Speaker 4: bang piece she was wearing on Twitter.
- 51:53Speaker 2: Oh girl, there are bang pieces.
- 51:56Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean it's law Roach does have the best
- 51:59Speaker 3: hair on that panel for sure. There also is have
- 52:03Speaker 3: been some previews of future episodes where La Roach and
- 52:05Speaker 3: Tyra are fighting, which I'm excited about, but physically.
- 52:12Speaker 2: One can. I guess we'll find out.
- 52:13Speaker 4: I want maybe I want Roach to like go up
- 52:17Speaker 4: to go up to the runway, grab a seam ripper
- 52:19Speaker 4: out of one of the designer's hands and plunge it
- 52:22Speaker 4: into Tyro's chest and then she just nothing, no blood
- 52:25Speaker 4: comes out. She's like, she's like and she's fully a cyborg.
- 52:29Speaker 3: And law Ben's down and says, not even to dinner
- 52:33Speaker 3: with the Kushners.
- 52:36Speaker 2: Yeah, but okay, the thing that I will.
- 52:38Speaker 1: And then and then Aquafina says, what you tom about? Sorry?
- 52:43Speaker 2: That got me.
- 52:45Speaker 3: I The thing that might get you to watch it
- 52:49Speaker 3: is and this is an anti we don't care about
- 52:52Speaker 3: spoiler's podcast.
- 52:53Speaker 2: Sorry, this is.
- 52:54Speaker 3: Like maybe lightly spoiled light spoiler on the conceit, but
- 52:57Speaker 3: they tell you for seconds of the show. The show
- 53:00Speaker 3: casts twenty six designers, and if there's one thing you
- 53:04Speaker 3: know about Project Runway, similar to glow Up, none of
- 53:07Speaker 3: them are good, right, none of them are good. Like
- 53:11Speaker 3: they all make the ugliest garments you've ever seen, in my mind,
- 53:14Speaker 3: so disgusting. It's part of the fun in my opinion.
- 53:19Speaker 3: But Heidi goes, there are twenty I think, I think
- 53:22Speaker 3: twenty six. That might not be right, but it's like,
- 53:25Speaker 3: it's a lot of people. Heidi is like, well, in
- 53:28Speaker 3: two weeks, half of you won't be here.
- 53:32Speaker 1: Gasp.
- 53:34Speaker 3: She chop chop, chop, chops. One dozen divas, one after
- 53:41Speaker 3: the other after the other, like.
- 53:43Speaker 4: Bodies by episode or is or is she like walking
- 53:47Speaker 4: around to the room, like while they're sewing, she's like,
- 53:50Speaker 4: she's like, that looks like shit your cut?
- 53:52Speaker 2: She pulls out her hatchet.
- 53:53Speaker 1: No, she shoots them in the head.
- 53:55Speaker 2: Yeah, no, girl. You hear bodies hit the floor.
- 54:01Speaker 3: And you and I look. One of our biggest complaints
- 54:03Speaker 3: of drag Race is that they're so cowardly when it
- 54:06Speaker 3: comes to limiting people. They don't eliminate the devas. It's
- 54:08Speaker 3: very frustrated, and eliminations are a big premise of a
- 54:11Speaker 3: reality competition show, and this Project Runway gives you the delight, shock,
- 54:19Speaker 3: and satisfaction of watching many eliminations happen in a row.
- 54:25Speaker 1: Oh wow, Okay, that actually is compelling.
- 54:28Speaker 3: Yes, and let me tell you also they're like related
- 54:32Speaker 3: but unrelated. There are two competitors from Drag Race on
- 54:36Speaker 3: this season of Project Runway.
- 54:38Speaker 2: And Plane Jane and Q. Okay, I'm anti Plane Jane.
- 54:45Speaker 3: Sorry, I'm very happy to be open and forthcoming about
- 54:48Speaker 3: that on the main Feed podcast. I do not like
- 54:50Speaker 3: Plane Jane as a character or as a drag artist.
- 54:54Speaker 2: I don't understand why people gagged over her. I don't
- 54:58Speaker 2: think she's funny.
- 54:59Speaker 3: I'm like, if you're I like a me and queen,
- 55:01Speaker 3: But if you're mean, it's got to be funny and
- 55:02Speaker 3: she was never, ever, ever funny.
- 55:05Speaker 1: Okay, well we'll have to agree to disagree about that.
- 55:07Speaker 3: Wow, okay, I would love for you the first I
- 55:12Speaker 3: think two episodes are out. I guess the third one
- 55:15Speaker 3: will be out by the time this podcast episode drops.
- 55:18Speaker 2: If you do watch it, you and I will key.
- 55:21Speaker 3: I don't know if we'll bring it up on the
- 55:22Speaker 3: podcast again, but like you and I must discuss.
- 55:25Speaker 1: We will kee it was A key will be had,
- 55:28Speaker 1: A key will be had. Can you put a key
- 55:29Speaker 1: in your calendar?
- 55:31Speaker 3: And the key is for Saturday at four pm.
- 55:36Speaker 4: We will be back next week with a discussion on
- 55:39Speaker 4: the Odyssey. So if you haven't seen it, see it
- 55:42Speaker 4: or I don't know, read a bunch of letterbox reviews
- 55:45Speaker 4: about it, and go to our patreon patreon dot com
- 55:49Speaker 4: slash like a Virgin for bi monthly bonus episodes and
- 55:55Speaker 4: we will see y'all next week.
- 55:59Speaker 1: My
