- 6:13Speaker 2: Right in here, missus MCing.
- 6:18Speaker 4: We try to duplicate a hole at here, oh Nicki
- 6:21Speaker 4: with a pony a glass of water, please my throat.
- 6:25Speaker 7: You know you can't see the broadcast in this room.
- 6:28Speaker 7: You just hear it as you would in your own.
- 6:29Speaker 6: Home programs pipe in here from the control room model

- 6:34Speaker 6: see man at the proper time, mister Queen, I take
- 6:38Speaker 6: it I extemporize in that microphone above the table.
- 6:41Speaker 2: Yes, doctor, yes, it's strictly an ad lib spot.
- 6:43Speaker 4: Immediately after my announcement on the air that I know
- 6:45Speaker 4: who committed the crime, NICKI and I dash into this
- 6:48Speaker 4: room from the studio, seat ourselves on the other side
- 6:50Speaker 4: of the table from you, and then we hold a
- 6:52Speaker 4: three cornered post mortem over the court.
- 6:54Speaker 7: Doctor Mking's course, I hope.
- 6:58Speaker 6: Elsie, do I take an unconscious secretary or wish to
- 7:01Speaker 6: achieve my.
- 7:04Speaker 7: Mary? I don't find that a bit funny.
- 7:06Speaker 4: Come rus Mary, missus mc king. I didn't know, right, Nikki, Yes,
- 7:13Speaker 4: I should explain. No one's allowed in this room but
- 7:15Speaker 4: our guest.
- 7:16Speaker 2: Of the evening. So, Nikki, if you'll show the rest
- 7:18Speaker 2: of doctor mc king's party into the client's booth. Did
- 7:23Speaker 2: you get thirsty during the broadcast? Doctor, here's a picture.
- 7:25Speaker 4: Of water right on the table. Oh yes, thank you,
- 7:27Speaker 4: Oh Phil. At a quick level, uh huh. If you'll
- 7:32Speaker 4: be seated, doctor Mking, thank you and say something into
- 7:34Speaker 4: the mic, and if.
- 7:34Speaker 2: At all just a voice level. I left doctor m
- 7:45Speaker 2: King alone in the armchair detectives room.
- 7:46Speaker 4: We went on with our program, and in due course
- 7:49Speaker 4: I reached the point in our mystery where I was
- 7:51Speaker 4: able to say, but, ellery, do you mean to say?
- 7:54Speaker 2: That's that?
- 7:55Speaker 5: Now?
- 7:55Speaker 2: I know who committed the murder?
- 8:08Speaker 4: Nicky and I hurried to the arm ched detective's room.
- 8:10Speaker 4: As usual, there was doctor Mking, a little nervous, but
- 8:12Speaker 4: otherwise himself.
- 8:13Speaker 2: I said, into the.
- 8:14Speaker 4: Table, and there, ladies and gentlemen, you'll have the mystery. Now,
- 8:20Speaker 4: let's see what our guest arm ched detective has to say.
- 8:22Speaker 7: Niki and tonight, ladies and gentlemen. Our guest is the
- 8:25Speaker 7: famous doctor Monty Mking, founder and leading light of that
- 8:29Speaker 7: popular radio program The King's English.
- 8:32Speaker 2: All I can think of at this moment, Doctor M.
- 8:34Speaker 2: King is McQueen's ignorance. You're too modest.
- 8:37Speaker 6: Emily, you're not the worst of hider by enemy. Ooh,
- 8:41Speaker 6: you're sometimes guilty of ellipses. Is that bad, doctor, But
- 8:46Speaker 6: you usually avoid committing such truly paul crimes against our
- 8:49Speaker 6: mother tongue as needless variants, irrelevant allusions, pleonasms, periperous.
- 8:56Speaker 4: Render But to get away from the English language and
- 8:59Speaker 4: how to use it, Doctor Mking, I hear you're famous
- 9:02Speaker 4: and the difference fere all together.
- 9:04Speaker 7: Yes, you're said to be able to whip up a
- 9:05Speaker 7: mean boyr based doctor. Oh.
- 9:07Speaker 6: Yes, Nikki, I am an enthusiastic amateur.
- 9:10Speaker 7: Hif doesn't your wife resent it?
- 9:12Speaker 6: On the contrary, Nikki, missus Mking is only too happy
- 9:15Speaker 6: to leave the solution of our household's culinary mysteries to me.
- 9:19Speaker 2: Ah. Talking about solving mystery is doctor Mking.
- 9:23Speaker 6: Oh, dear, I find that drought has suddenly attacked my
- 9:27Speaker 6: vocal cords.
- 9:28Speaker 2: Simple will irrigate him peculiar oblige.
- 9:31Speaker 7: I'm way ahead of yeller. Here you are, doctor mcking,
- 9:35Speaker 7: a nice wet glass of water oil.
- 9:39Speaker 2: Thank you.
- 9:39Speaker 4: Now, as soon as you're through oiling your allowing, doctor,
- 9:42Speaker 4: suppose you tell us who committed the murder in the
- 9:44Speaker 4: police Commissioner's.
- 9:45Speaker 7: Office or what's the uh?
- 9:47Speaker 2: Don't let the water glass warrior? Doctor who committed them?
- 9:53Speaker 7: Orri to nervous to speak?
- 9:55Speaker 2: Hey, doctor Mking, Well it happens to the best of it.
- 9:58Speaker 4: In just a moment, I'll give you a solution to
- 10:00Speaker 4: Knight's mystery.
- 10:00Speaker 2: By first, here.
- 10:07Speaker 4: The control room cut our arm chair detective's room off
- 10:10Speaker 4: the air that night, just in time. As Nicky and
- 10:12Speaker 4: I hurried around the table to doctor mc king's chair,
- 10:16Speaker 4: can fell off.
- 10:16Speaker 7: His chair, Doctor Queen, Queen, I I poison poison.
- 10:23Speaker 2: Doctor King?
- 10:24Speaker 7: What the.
- 10:26Speaker 2: Search Rosemary?
- 10:29Speaker 7: Domed? Search Rosemary? That his wife, Doctor m King? Hillary,
- 10:35Speaker 7: call a doctor?
- 10:36Speaker 2: Oh what Nicky, Hillary? What's going on in here? What's
- 10:38Speaker 2: happened to your guest?
- 10:40Speaker 4: Say it's dead Phil, But we're still on the air.
- 10:44Speaker 4: Like the poison is in that glass of water. M
- 10:46Speaker 4: King just drank our water from the picture pictures loaded
- 10:51Speaker 4: with a tool.
- 10:52Speaker 2: Smell of this film? Huh oh, what am I doing?
- 10:55Speaker 2: Hurry for the love of Mike, we're still on. You've
- 10:57Speaker 2: got to finish the show.
- 10:58Speaker 7: So murder.
- 10:58Speaker 2: Yes, the murdy is Phil had this room got us
- 11:01Speaker 2: who were off the air? Nicky, Hey, sorry, back.
- 11:03Speaker 7: To the mic. I don't know how we got through
- 11:14Speaker 7: the rest of the program. My mind's a blank on
- 11:16Speaker 7: the whole thing. But the minute we went off the
- 11:19Speaker 7: air that evening, Ellery hurried back to the guest room
- 11:21Speaker 7: to solve a very different kind of murder, the murder
- 11:24Speaker 7: of his own armchair detective. No, no, no, I didn't
- 11:29Speaker 7: inspect the Queen. I didn't.
- 11:30Speaker 3: I tell you, missus mc king your husband's dying words
- 11:33Speaker 3: with a at you.
- 11:34Speaker 7: But you didn't find anything on me, did you.
- 11:35Speaker 6: The idea of murder is ridiculous, Queen. My brother probably
- 11:38Speaker 6: committed suicide. Impossible, Bud.
- 11:40Speaker 4: The poison that killed him comes only in liquid form,
- 11:42Speaker 4: so it must have been in the container.
- 11:43Speaker 3: And there's no poison container of any kind, either on
- 11:46Speaker 3: doctor mc king's body or.
- 11:47Speaker 6: In this rule Inspector. Really I found it. Ah, the
- 11:50Speaker 6: bottle's empty, Inspector.
- 11:51Speaker 2: But smell it.
- 11:52Speaker 7: Eh, this is it all right?
- 11:54Speaker 2: Say?
- 11:54Speaker 5: Let you find that bottle on the floor of that
- 11:56Speaker 5: glass and closed booth where missus mc king, Bud mcking
- 11:59Speaker 5: and miss wolln the broadcast from my stroke the client's booth.
- 12:02Speaker 2: Oh, Nikki feeling better?
- 12:03Speaker 7: Oh yes, sorry, Oh? No one else was in that booth, Inspector,
- 12:06Speaker 7: just his wife's brother and secretary.
- 12:07Speaker 3: So to simplify this allay, IM sure the water in
- 12:10Speaker 3: this picture was okay when the mking party first came
- 12:12Speaker 3: in here with you.
- 12:13Speaker 4: And Nikki, before he went in the air, positive does
- 12:15Speaker 4: Inspector Eli, he.
- 12:16Speaker 7: Drank a glass full of it himself.
- 12:17Speaker 5: So one of these three dropped the poison into the
- 12:20Speaker 5: picture before miss porter escorted him out disposed of.
- 12:22Speaker 7: The empty bottle in the booth.
- 12:23Speaker 2: Freid. We forced the poisonous hand Nikki by sending him
- 12:26Speaker 2: into that booth. Mking.
- 12:27Speaker 3: It looks as if your husband had noticed you pulling
- 12:29Speaker 3: around with that picture.
- 12:31Speaker 7: If Marty had seen me drop poison into the water,
- 12:33Speaker 7: would he have drunk any of its?
- 12:34Speaker 2: Rosemary's got a point there, Inspector.
- 12:36Speaker 3: He probably didn't get the significance of what he'd clean
- 12:38Speaker 3: until he realized.
- 12:39Speaker 5: He was poison But when he does realize it, he says,
- 12:41Speaker 5: to search you for the bottle man?
- 12:43Speaker 7: But why should I murder Marty? I loved my husband.
- 12:45Speaker 7: I loved him dearly. Life won't be the same, I'll
- 12:48Speaker 7: say it won't.
- 12:51Speaker 2: What do you say, Oh?
- 12:53Speaker 7: Nothing, nothing?
- 12:55Speaker 2: What did you mean, miss Wallace?
- 12:56Speaker 7: Yes, go on, Elsie, say it all right, I will.
- 13:01Speaker 3: Doctor mc king was the kindest husband in the world
- 13:03Speaker 3: to her, and all she cared about was money, money
- 13:06Speaker 3: for clothes, furs and jewelry.
- 13:09Speaker 7: And when he had to close down her charge, he
- 13:10Speaker 7: called she.
- 13:11Speaker 2: She poisoned him out of revenge. Huw mush wolen no
- 13:15Speaker 2: for his estate.
- 13:17Speaker 7: His will leaves everything to her. That's why missus mc
- 13:20Speaker 7: king poisoned him.
- 13:22Speaker 8: What is money?
- 13:23Speaker 2: Well, missus mckinn What can I say, mister crean.
- 13:26Speaker 7: That I'm innocent.
- 13:27Speaker 2: I've already told you that.
- 13:28Speaker 7: A dozen times.
- 13:30Speaker 2: It's true.
- 13:30Speaker 7: I've been extravagant and I was angry when Mardy plants
- 13:33Speaker 7: down on me. But commit murder for money?
- 13:36Speaker 2: The man I loved Hallry come out with me a minute.
- 13:41Speaker 2: Oh yes, Dad, shut the door, well shut it it
- 13:45Speaker 2: shut that. Oh he's blamed radio doors, you think, son.
- 13:50Speaker 2: I don't know. The King did put the finger on
- 13:53Speaker 2: his wife. He may have been no more than a
- 13:54Speaker 2: stab in the dark day, certainly not enough to hold
- 13:56Speaker 2: her on.
- 13:57Speaker 3: And he ain't gonna stand her home and have bally
- 13:59Speaker 3: Gum showed the house on the QT. Might send Nikki
- 14:01Speaker 3: home with that tool. Good idea that secret snoop out information.
- 14:04Speaker 2: Where they wouldn't give her.
- 14:06Speaker 7: The time of day.
- 14:06Speaker 2: I'm blessed sure, but what that?
- 14:08Speaker 4: Ever since m King said Sir Rosemary, I've had the
- 14:12Speaker 4: weirdest feeling that he meant something else.
- 14:15Speaker 7: I don't know.
- 14:16Speaker 4: I had the feeling there's a clue, clue I've missed
- 14:19Speaker 4: or forgotten, a clue that ties in with mc king's
- 14:22Speaker 4: dying words. Maybe something that happened during the of course,
- 14:25Speaker 4: you've got it now, but I know where I can
- 14:28Speaker 4: get it.
- 14:28Speaker 2: Talk Saints that well.
- 14:30Speaker 4: They always make recordings of the Queen shows that Now
- 14:32Speaker 4: you go ahead with your plans. I'm going to take
- 14:34Speaker 4: a recording of tonight's show home and play it back
- 14:37Speaker 4: all night if necessary.
- 14:38Speaker 2: The spot that whatever it.
- 14:40Speaker 6: Is, bring that drought has suddenly attacked my vocal cords.
- 14:55Speaker 6: Simple illrrigate him? Miss will you obliged?
- 14:57Speaker 7: I'm way ahead of ery. Here you are, doctor mcking,
- 15:01Speaker 7: A nice wet glass of water oil.
- 15:05Speaker 6: Thank you?
- 15:06Speaker 2: Oh it's here, it's here, somewhere, modest.
- 15:09Speaker 6: Hillary, you're not the worst offender by enemy. Oh, you're
- 15:13Speaker 6: sometimes guilty, but I can't be there. Various irrelevant allusions
- 15:20Speaker 6: leonasm yeah.
- 15:22Speaker 7: Said to be able to whip up a mean will
- 15:23Speaker 7: you based?
- 15:24Speaker 2: Doctor?
- 15:24Speaker 6: Oh? Yes, Nikki, I am an enthusiastic amateur chef chef.
- 15:30Speaker 6: On the contrary, Nikki ye, missus mc.
- 15:32Speaker 2: King chef, can it beat it?
- 15:34Speaker 6: Amateur chef?
- 15:35Speaker 7: Doesn't your wife?
- 15:36Speaker 2: That's it?
- 15:57Speaker 8: Is that?
- 15:57Speaker 6: All?
- 15:57Speaker 2: It is it?
- 16:00Speaker 7: Who's that?
- 16:04Speaker 4: Who is it?
- 16:07Speaker 7: Bud McKay? Wait a minute?
- 16:15Speaker 2: What do you want? I saw the light under your door.
- 16:18Speaker 7: I've been reading. What are you doing back at your
- 16:21Speaker 7: brother's house, mister mccainn. I thought you left after we
- 16:23Speaker 7: got Rosemary to bed.
- 16:24Speaker 6: Oh, I went home, But then I thought with Monty, well,
- 16:29Speaker 6: Rosemary in such a spot?
- 16:31Speaker 2: May I come in and chin for a while.
- 16:33Speaker 7: I'm sorry, it's after three. What do you want?
- 16:36Speaker 2: Scared the death?
- 16:38Speaker 7: Good night?
- 16:38Speaker 2: Oh? Your hurry, your m you're full of that murder
- 16:43Speaker 2: up too, aren't you? And it's made you afraid of me.
- 16:46Speaker 7: Please take your foot away.
- 16:47Speaker 2: I want to go to think gall. He's pulling the
- 16:50Speaker 2: wool over my eyes.
- 16:51Speaker 9: You're a spy.
- 16:52Speaker 2: He planted you here, go door. Mondy wasn't murdered. It
- 16:56Speaker 2: was suicide.
- 16:57Speaker 7: You've been drinking. I know what you think.
- 17:00Speaker 2: I'm in love with Rosemary. Then I killed my brother
- 17:02Speaker 2: to get his watch.
- 17:03Speaker 6: If you don't go away, hide, There's never been a
- 17:05Speaker 6: thing between Rosemary and me, not a.
- 17:07Speaker 10: Sergeant, Heeley, Sergeant, he's still down there. Oh, nothing, nothing started,
- 17:18Speaker 10: and I just want to make sure we were there.
- 17:20Speaker 2: Everything up there?
- 17:21Speaker 7: Pe Well, yes, yes, I talked Rosemary mcking and to
- 17:25Speaker 7: Betty by it half bad ten and miss Willan went
- 17:27Speaker 7: to a room hours ago.
- 17:28Speaker 2: You sound shaky?
- 17:29Speaker 5: You sure everything's all right?
- 17:31Speaker 7: Well, sergeant, buton Mking just came back to the house.
- 17:35Speaker 2: I know I saw him go in, but he didn't
- 17:37Speaker 2: try to sneak in, so maybe I better committed that.
- 17:41Speaker 7: What was that? Oh, for heaven's sake, what's wrong? Don't
- 17:46Speaker 7: you hear it?
- 17:47Speaker 4: Sergeant?
- 17:47Speaker 7: Sounds if someone was breaking up the house. I got
- 17:49Speaker 7: to go it. Wait a let downstairs. Funny it stopped?
- 18:02Speaker 7: Who who's that downstairs? What happened?
- 18:09Speaker 2: Where the tickets?
- 18:10Speaker 7: The light? I want to be around.
- 18:12Speaker 9: Its Porter Potter, Miss Porter?
- 18:27Speaker 2: What miss Porter?
- 18:45Speaker 7: Urge?
- 18:46Speaker 2: You're okay, miss Porter. See the inspector's here. You just came.
- 18:50Speaker 2: How you feel it, Nikki, inspector queen. She's still grubbedy?
- 18:53Speaker 7: I was upstairs.
- 18:54Speaker 2: Wear you downstairs?
- 18:55Speaker 1: Now?
- 18:55Speaker 2: Nikki?
- 18:56Speaker 3: Really carried your head from the upper hall where he
- 18:58Speaker 3: found you now cold, and he phoned me at headquarters.
- 19:01Speaker 2: I had been working late.
- 19:02Speaker 7: Oh what's the matter with my head?
- 19:04Speaker 5: Somebody used it for target practicemas porter, Well, they scored
- 19:08Speaker 5: a bullseye?
- 19:09Speaker 2: Oh who was it?
- 19:11Speaker 7: Who did it?
- 19:12Speaker 2: Really was too late, Nikki, But it's somebody who was
- 19:15Speaker 2: in the house.
- 19:16Speaker 5: I checked right away, but the two women were in
- 19:18Speaker 5: their room sleeping, or make them believe they were sleeping.
- 19:21Speaker 5: And I found Bud mcking on a couch in the
- 19:23Speaker 5: upstairs hall snoring off a load. We've got him locked
- 19:27Speaker 5: in separate rooms. Hellay, where the heck are you bed
- 19:31Speaker 5: my store? I tried calling you at home and no,
- 19:33Speaker 5: ans must have been on my way over here. So Nikki, hi,
- 19:36Speaker 5: mister Q Nikki, your hurt and a crack on the skulls.
- 19:40Speaker 7: Maybe I have a concussion, oh, Nikki?
- 19:43Speaker 2: Or hey, hold me close? Maybe what are you two
- 19:47Speaker 2: standing here for? Didn't you call a doctor? Nikki? Honey,
- 19:50Speaker 2: I'm closer. Ah, she's okay, my stroke, I am not sergeant?
- 19:56Speaker 2: Why you? Oh Nikki? Want are you doing?
- 20:00Speaker 7: Snoopy?
- 20:01Speaker 2: Why?
- 20:02Speaker 7: Well? I heard someone going birst circing some room downstairs.
- 20:05Speaker 3: Really, by the time Nikki got out into the upstairs hall,
- 20:07Speaker 3: it was all over and she bumped into.
- 20:09Speaker 2: The whoever it was in the dark he grabbed downstairs.
- 20:12Speaker 2: The kitchen, wasn't it? How'd you know? I want to
- 20:14Speaker 2: see it? Which way?
- 20:15Speaker 7: Come on?
- 20:17Speaker 2: Hurry up, Nikki? Right in the spottle was probably too late.
- 20:21Speaker 4: I should have foreseen that the calory you talking about
- 20:24Speaker 4: it gets me half killed.
- 20:25Speaker 2: Here's a kitchen, then it won't even well for the
- 20:29Speaker 2: look at this place, wreck.
- 20:31Speaker 7: Dishes, broken furniture.
- 20:33Speaker 2: In October, search or something for fact and why in
- 20:35Speaker 2: the kitchen. Remember doctor mc king's dying words.
- 20:38Speaker 3: Search Rosemary meaning his why not necessarily not his wife,
- 20:42Speaker 3: but ellery Rosemary.
- 20:43Speaker 2: That's missus mc king's first names.
- 20:45Speaker 4: It's also the name of something else, Doctor mc king
- 20:47Speaker 4: was an amateur chef, an enthusiastic cook, and this ought
- 20:51Speaker 4: to be the spice cabinet.
- 20:52Speaker 2: Spice cabinet from my head anyway.
- 20:55Speaker 4: All clothes time, mace, modrum, sage, passil, not mack old
- 21:00Speaker 4: ginger Ah, look Rosemary, huh.
- 21:03Speaker 7: Rosemar and reused in cookie.
- 21:05Speaker 2: He said, search Rosemary. Meant to finish a sentence of.
- 21:08Speaker 7: Search Rosemary, jar and spice cabinet or something like.
- 21:10Speaker 3: That, search Rosemary, jobbo, Well, search it. I'm right there'll
- 21:14Speaker 3: be something in this jar unless the searcher beat us
- 21:17Speaker 3: to it.
- 21:18Speaker 6: There is a lot of typewriters message the King left
- 21:20Speaker 6: it what to say yuh, dated ten days ago.
- 21:25Speaker 4: Due to a recent disturbing episode, I am writing this
- 21:28Speaker 4: notice of precaution. If anyone finds it, I'm the only
- 21:31Speaker 4: one who uses the spice cabinet, so to say it
- 21:33Speaker 4: against accidental discovery. It will be because they are investigating
- 21:37Speaker 4: my murder. The other night, a certain person close to
- 21:40Speaker 4: me threatened my life jar. I was inclined to at
- 21:44Speaker 4: first dismiss it as hysteria. Now I am not so sure.
- 21:47Speaker 4: If anything happens to me. The person who threatened to
- 21:50Speaker 4: kill me wash co On Elsie Woolen, my secretary signed
- 21:57Speaker 4: Monty Mking. Really get that Woolen girl down here, and
- 22:17Speaker 4: it is truly woman. You'll get threatened doctor mc king's life.
- 22:22Speaker 7: Yes, I him. Come on, why.
- 22:29Speaker 4: Tears, Nikki, you tackle a give us some of the
- 22:32Speaker 4: old Porte treatment, you know, the kind of use on me.
- 22:35Speaker 7: You hope I a better look than her, Miss Wollan
- 22:40Speaker 7: Elsie reporter.
- 22:43Speaker 6: They just don't understand.
- 22:46Speaker 7: Yes, well they're men, dear, But Elsie, they'll find out eventually.
- 22:51Speaker 7: It's much better to tell the truth. They're really not O.
- 22:56Speaker 7: You can't blame them, dear. If you refuse to talk it,
- 22:59Speaker 7: it looks if you have something to come and see you.
- 23:02Speaker 7: Why not tell the whole story? Come on, now, I
- 23:08Speaker 7: loved him, secretary loves books.
- 23:11Speaker 2: Dike, you shut up.
- 23:13Speaker 7: I kept it locked up for so long, but one
- 23:18Speaker 7: night it came out. Marty told me he loved his wife.
- 23:23Speaker 7: I guess I said some foolish things, but I didn't poison.
- 23:27Speaker 9: Him last night.
- 23:28Speaker 7: I didn't.
- 23:30Speaker 2: You can't prove I didn't because I didn't try to
- 23:35Speaker 2: prove it.
- 23:35Speaker 3: Go ahead, try hey, all right, Bailey, She's not going
- 23:40Speaker 3: anywhere because she's right.
- 23:42Speaker 2: He can't prove it. Well, this does is to uncover
- 23:44Speaker 2: an not a possible motive.
- 23:47Speaker 7: This would be about the time for the great Ellery
- 23:49Speaker 7: Queen to come up with one of his miraculous solutions,
- 23:52Speaker 7: wouldn't it.
- 23:53Speaker 4: Oh Nickie, how did you know? Oh no, Llary, Yes, Dad,
- 23:56Speaker 4: Now I know who murdered doctor m King. And there,
- 24:16Speaker 4: ladies and gentlemen, you have the mystery. Now I suppose
- 24:19Speaker 4: you home, Mom, Jeded Detectives and our guest in the
- 24:21Speaker 4: studio compare solutions.
- 24:23Speaker 7: Ellery. I'm happy to introduce the charming proprietress of one
- 24:27Speaker 7: of Hollywood's most popular syndicated columns, Miss Sheila Graham.
- 24:31Speaker 2: Good eating, Miss Graham, and welcome to the arm chair.
- 24:34Speaker 7: Thank you.
- 24:35Speaker 8: But after listening to your mystery tonight, I'm a little
- 24:38Speaker 8: worried about occupying this post.
- 24:41Speaker 4: Oh oh, you have nothing to be afraid of, procus
- 24:45Speaker 4: you like a glass of water. But help you relax?
- 24:48Speaker 7: Who has the last thing in the world i'd want?
- 24:50Speaker 4: I can't say that I blame you, But now I
- 24:52Speaker 4: suppose we get down to business. Tell me, who do
- 24:55Speaker 4: you think is the criminal in tonight's story?
- 24:57Speaker 8: Well it's very complicated, tonight, sure, but I think miss Woolan,
- 25:01Speaker 8: the secretary did it.
- 25:03Speaker 2: I see and you see it.
- 25:05Speaker 8: Well, it was a very subtle murder. It takes a
- 25:08Speaker 8: smart girl to murder a man like that, and took
- 25:11Speaker 8: a lot of preparation. Secretaries are usually rather smart. And
- 25:15Speaker 8: she knew this man. She knew that he might get thirsty.
- 25:18Speaker 8: He obviously got thirsty very often in his office. And
- 25:21Speaker 8: also he said that somebody very hysterically threatened his life.
- 25:27Speaker 2: Yeah, previously, you mean in the note.
- 25:29Speaker 8: He left, and she was a very hysterical woman. So
- 25:32Speaker 8: I think miss Woollan did it.
- 25:33Speaker 4: Thank you very much, Micheila Graham. We'll find out in
- 25:35Speaker 4: just a moment if your solution is correct. Now here
- 25:38Speaker 4: is Paul Masterson.
- 25:40Speaker 3: A second grade war has in the not two distant
- 25:42Speaker 3: past drawn to a close. The magnificent, self sacrificing work
- 25:46Speaker 3: of the International Red Cross will long be remembered at home.
- 25:50Speaker 3: The American Red Cross has always been on the job
- 25:52Speaker 3: whenever a disaster struck, whether it was a tornado, earthquake, fire.
- 25:56Speaker 2: Or flood.
- 25:57Speaker 3: It is our duty and our privilege to help make
- 25:59Speaker 3: the ninth teen forty eight Red Cross campaign the best ever.
- 26:03Speaker 3: The quote is set at seventy five million dollars. By
- 26:06Speaker 3: giving to the Red Cross, you were giving directly to
- 26:09Speaker 3: your relatives and friends and the armed forces. And here
- 26:11Speaker 3: at home, let's make nineteen forty eight the banner year
- 26:15Speaker 3: in donations to the American Red Cross.
- 26:26Speaker 7: I don't care. I don't want to hear it. He's
- 26:29Speaker 7: just too too smart, always knows the answer to mysteries.
- 26:32Speaker 2: Well, I want to here, Nicky piped down. What have
- 26:35Speaker 2: you got out? Ready? Swelled head?
- 26:36Speaker 4: And it's all right, dad, it's that crack of the skull. Well, now,
- 26:40Speaker 4: what was doctor Marty mc king's profession? What was he
- 26:43Speaker 4: most famous for?
- 26:44Speaker 6: His radio program The King's English thirty on the correct
- 26:48Speaker 6: usage of the English language.
- 26:49Speaker 4: And let's take another look at that note we just
- 26:51Speaker 4: found on the Rosemary jar I quote due to a
- 26:56Speaker 4: recent disturbing episode, I am writing and so forth. Something
- 27:00Speaker 4: wrong there, Maestro, Oh, sergeant, due to two in that
- 27:03Speaker 4: sentence is hopelessly incorrect.
- 27:05Speaker 2: Oh it is, Huh. It should read because of a
- 27:08Speaker 2: recent disturbance, I'm writing and so forth. Due two can
- 27:11Speaker 2: never be used at verbally that so and this.
- 27:15Speaker 4: If anyone finds it, it'll be because they are investigating
- 27:18Speaker 4: my murder.
- 27:19Speaker 7: Any one must be followed by he one can possibly
- 27:21Speaker 7: mean the plural.
- 27:22Speaker 2: Oh, miss Porter is with us again? Yes, Nikki.
- 27:24Speaker 4: Another mistake, and this I was inclined to at first
- 27:28Speaker 4: dismiss a split split in one. In other words, this
- 27:32Speaker 4: short note purportedly from the pen of an authority uncorrect English,
- 27:35Speaker 4: reveals not one, not two, but three of the commonest
- 27:39Speaker 4: errors of usage.
- 27:40Speaker 3: Incredible conclusion. Doctor mc king did not write the note.
- 27:44Speaker 3: It's a phoney, I mean a forgery.
- 27:46Speaker 4: And since the note was not written by doctor mc king,
- 27:48Speaker 4: was not left in the Rosemary job at doctor m
- 27:50Speaker 4: king either someone else left the note in the jar.
- 27:53Speaker 2: Obviously the real writer of the note. The fortrait very
- 27:55Speaker 2: why what was accomplished by it? Or a great deal
- 27:57Speaker 2: to it?
- 27:58Speaker 4: Made us believe that the word rue Rosemary and doctor
- 28:00Speaker 4: mc king's dying statement searched Rosemary meant Rosemary the herb
- 28:05Speaker 4: rather than Rosemary, the name of a woman. And who
- 28:08Speaker 4: gains by our thinking that the victim was not accusing
- 28:11Speaker 4: a woman named Rosemary, but was merely telling us to
- 28:13Speaker 4: look for a note in a spice jar.
- 28:15Speaker 7: Only Rosemary mcking herself, she did poison her husband right
- 28:18Speaker 7: to twist.
- 28:19Speaker 3: His accusation of her to mean something entirely different because
- 28:22Speaker 3: she had a guilty conscience.
- 28:23Speaker 7: So tonight, after I put her to bed, she forged
- 28:25Speaker 7: her husband's signature to a note accusing Elsie Wooman, then
- 28:28Speaker 7: sneak downstairs, let the note in the rosemary.
- 28:31Speaker 2: Jar as a blind and then Nicky deliberately led us
- 28:33Speaker 2: to that jar. Wait a minute, Wait a minute, led
- 28:35Speaker 2: us to the jar, my stroke.
- 28:37Speaker 4: By wrecking the kitchen, Sergeant, what was that but a
- 28:40Speaker 4: clever device to draw our attention to him, to make
- 28:42Speaker 4: us search it and find her plant in the rosemary jar.
- 28:45Speaker 7: And then on her way back upstairs, she bumped into
- 28:47Speaker 7: me in the dark and let me have it.
- 28:51Speaker 4: At that Rosemary's attempt to lead us down a falls
- 28:53Speaker 4: trail might have succeeded if only she'd learned from her
- 28:56Speaker 4: victim the rules governing the English language.
- 28:58Speaker 3: Oh, here's where she learned something about the real governing murder. Really, Oh,
- 29:04Speaker 3: Rose Murray Mking for the murder of my arm chair detective. Yes, sir,
- 29:19Speaker 3: and here, ladies and gentlemen, you have the solution to
- 29:22Speaker 3: our mystery. Thank you again, Mischeilla Graham for serving as
- 29:24Speaker 3: our guest arm ched detective.
- 29:26Speaker 2: This evening.
- 29:27Speaker 4: As mementos of the occasion, I have for you a
- 29:28Speaker 4: copy of my latest mystery anthology, The Queen's Awards nineteen
- 29:31Speaker 4: forty seven, and a subscription to Ellery Queen's Mystery magazine.
- 29:36Speaker 2: Paul feeling all right, Well, I guess we're okay.
- 29:39Speaker 3: There's been no calls yet asking if our arm chair
- 29:41Speaker 3: detective has really been knocked on, and what are you
- 29:44Speaker 3: worried about?
- 29:44Speaker 2: Among other things? Ellery, next week?
- 29:46Speaker 7: Never mind about next week?
- 29:48Speaker 2: What's the matter, Nikki?
- 29:49Speaker 3: What gives next week that it darkens the fair brow
- 29:51Speaker 3: and brings lightning into those beauteous orbs? Why, Paul, Well,
- 29:56Speaker 3: it's nothing, Nikki. I guess you bring out the poet
- 29:58Speaker 3: in me. Poh, NICKI remember me, go away, not you, Nicky?
- 30:04Speaker 7: Yes, I remember you, Ellery, Q I remember that female too?
- 30:07Speaker 2: What female? Nikki's referring to next week's problem, Paul, I'll
- 30:11Speaker 2: say she was a problem.
- 30:12Speaker 5: What was her?
- 30:13Speaker 4: I mean it's name Ellory. You're right the first time, Paul,
- 30:16Speaker 4: I call her, I mean it the farmer's daughter. This
- 30:31Speaker 4: is Lary Queen saying good night until next week and
- 30:34Speaker 4: enlisting all Americans every night and every day in the
- 30:37Speaker 4: fight against bad citizenship, bigotry, and discrimination, the crimes which
- 30:42Speaker 4: are weakening America.
- 30:50Speaker 3: All names used on this program are fictitious and do
- 30:52Speaker 3: not refer to real people, either living or dead. Among
- 30:56Speaker 3: the members of the night's cast were Larry Dobkin, Her Butterfield,
- 30:59Speaker 3: K Brinker, Alan Reid, John Banks, Bill Johnston, Charles Seal,
- 31:03Speaker 3: Anne Morrison, and Joe Kerns. Music was by Rex Corey,
- 31:07Speaker 3: direction by Dick Willan entire production under the supervision of
- 31:11Speaker 3: Ellery Queen. Now a listening reminder for a hilarious combination
- 31:16Speaker 3: of spring fever and spring house cleaning. Listen when Willie
- 31:19Speaker 3: Piper spring fever combats his wife's feverish energy on Tales
- 31:23Speaker 3: of Willie Piper Tonight.
- 31:25Speaker 2: The preceding program came to you by transcription. The best
- 31:30Speaker 2: time to plan for the future of your children is
- 31:33Speaker 2: when they're small. That's the time to set up a
- 31:36Speaker 2: nest egg for their education. And your banker will tell
- 31:39Speaker 2: you that the best way to do it is to
- 31:41Speaker 2: put the money into United States savings funds. So set
- 31:45Speaker 2: up that education fund now in United States Savings funds.
- 31:50Speaker 2: This is ABC, the American Broadcasting Company.
- 31:59Speaker 11: This is Andrey with Otrwesterns dot com, where we stream

- 32:20Speaker 11: out at Otrwesterns dot com slash live again. That's OTR
- 32:24Speaker 11: Westerns dot com slash Live. You're listening to the great
- 32:28Speaker 11: Detectives of Old Time Radio with Adam Graham And now
- 32:31Speaker 11: let's get back into the show.
- 32:39Speaker 1: Welcome back. Well, this has gotta be the most mata
- 32:44Speaker 1: detective show we've ever had. This makes uh, Johnny Dollar
- 32:50Speaker 1: running into listeners seem quite tame by comparison. It's an
- 32:55Speaker 1: interesting idea, and I think they did a good job
- 32:58Speaker 1: of it. I uh, I think they were trying to
- 33:01Speaker 1: avoid going for a sort of wouldn't it been as
- 33:04Speaker 1: bad as a War of the World's panic? But they
- 33:07Speaker 1: didn't want people going around saying, did j hear how
- 33:11Speaker 1: somebody got killed at ABC recording ellery Queen? And he
- 33:16Speaker 1: was clear that so that it didn't happen live. It
- 33:21Speaker 1: happened a long time ago, back when we were on
- 33:24Speaker 1: NBC or CBS. Of course, the case was a little
- 33:27Speaker 1: bit of misdirection because the only reason the police thought
- 33:32Speaker 1: that Rosemary meant something other than the woman's name is
- 33:37Speaker 1: because Ellery said that's what he felt. Though, as Inspector
- 33:42Speaker 1: Queen said, they didn't quite have any evidence, so it
- 33:46Speaker 1: all turned out for the best. Well, now we turned
- 33:49Speaker 1: to listener comments and feedback and joan comments regarding the
- 33:53Speaker 1: saga of ROUFFI rough that it was nice. It was
- 33:59Speaker 1: a nice surprise to find Jack Webb in the show.
- 34:02Speaker 1: This only goes to prove we must listen even more
- 34:06Speaker 1: carefully to the voices as we listen to the different shows.
- 34:09Speaker 1: I missed the regular actors of Ellery Queen as we
- 34:12Speaker 1: heard them in previous shows, and because of this I
- 34:14Speaker 1: only have listened to this show. I didn't like the
- 34:17Speaker 1: replacement actors as well as I like the ones before. Well,
- 34:21Speaker 1: I guess the case of the Ellery Queen Radio show
- 34:26Speaker 1: at this point is if you don't like the cast,
- 34:29Speaker 1: they will change, And of course we had a change
- 34:32Speaker 1: with Virginia greg Out replaced by Kay Brinker. The interesting
- 34:37Speaker 1: thing about Kay Brinker is she had worked on Ellery
- 34:42Speaker 1: Queen before, and she had actually married Ellery Queen or
- 34:47Speaker 1: one half of the writing team that produced the books.
- 34:50Speaker 1: She was the wife of Manfred Lee. She married him
- 34:54Speaker 1: in nineteen forty two and they had eight children together.
- 34:58Speaker 1: And here she's returning to the of Nicki Porter in
- 35:01Speaker 1: nineteen forty eight. Of course, this would also mark the departure,
- 35:05Speaker 1: as I said, of Larry Dopkin. Now, we don't know
- 35:08Speaker 1: if this was his last recorded episode, but it's the
- 35:10Speaker 1: last episode in existence. And the way that Dopkin tells
- 35:14Speaker 1: that he was very unceremoniously dismissed. He told Martin Grahams
- 35:20Speaker 1: that one day he was just told that he was
- 35:24Speaker 1: not going to be back as Ellery Queen and not
- 35:26Speaker 1: to show up at the studio next week. Was given
- 35:28Speaker 1: no reason why he was dismissed. And again from everything
- 35:32Speaker 1: in Dapkin's career, he continued to be much in demand,
- 35:36Speaker 1: a very great professional, but he was replaced by Howard Colver,
- 35:40Speaker 1: who will hear next week. Now we do turn to
- 35:43Speaker 1: a listener review over in the iTunes store Bill Jay Right.
- 35:50Speaker 1: Some of these I heard when they first aired. It
- 35:54Speaker 1: is interesting on the personalities of normal people as portrayed
- 35:59Speaker 1: then compared to ask portray now, indeed it really is,
- 36:04Speaker 1: and I do think that there were some big differences.
- 36:07Speaker 1: While certainly some of the portrayals were silly or over
- 36:11Speaker 1: the top or unrealistic, even on the more closest we
- 36:16Speaker 1: got to reality programs, stuff like people are Funny. There
- 36:20Speaker 1: was a different way people talked and carried themselves, even
- 36:23Speaker 1: if they didn't know they were being record well. During
- 36:26Speaker 1: our listener support Week, we discussed programs that will be
- 36:30Speaker 1: coming to you during our two thy fifteen twenty sixteen season,
- 36:37Speaker 1: which gets underway the last week of October. Still to
- 36:42Speaker 1: come this season, on Mondays, we'll be starting up with
- 36:46Speaker 1: Michael Shane and that will run through that whole season.
- 36:51Speaker 1: On Tuesday. We actually have two more series we're going
- 36:55Speaker 1: to introduce in the twenty fourteen twenty fifteen season, with
- 36:58Speaker 1: Heartstone of the Death Squad and Crime Files of Lamond.
- 37:02Speaker 1: For those of you who love Basil Rathbone, he'll be back,
- 37:06Speaker 1: though not as Sherlock Holmes. He'll be starring in Tales
- 37:09Speaker 1: of Fatima for two weeks and then I know a
- 37:13Speaker 1: lot of people have asked for the Shadow, and I've
- 37:17Speaker 1: explained the program status. We just can't bring it to you. However,
- 37:21Speaker 1: we are going to bring you a show that's very
- 37:24Speaker 1: much like The Shadow. In fact, it stars one of
- 37:28Speaker 1: the actor, mister James Monks, who starred in Mister Moto.
- 37:32Speaker 1: And I thought that it was a supernatural show, but
- 37:36Speaker 1: as I listened to it, it turned out to really
- 37:39Speaker 1: be a detective story with a little bit of a
- 37:41Speaker 1: shadowish element thrown in, and I thought, this isn't something
- 37:45Speaker 1: we should do as an extra, this is something we
- 37:47Speaker 1: should bring to the Great Detectives. So he will bring
- 37:50Speaker 1: you The Avenger, then the ABC Mystery Theater featuring Mark
- 37:56Speaker 1: Saber and Defense Attorney and find only the Private Files
- 38:01Speaker 1: of Rex Saunders. These are all fairly short series, with
- 38:06Speaker 1: the exception of The Avengers. I trust you we'll enjoy
- 38:09Speaker 1: them all right. Well, that will do it for today.
- 38:12Speaker 1: Remember to support our listener support campaign, and if you
- 38:15Speaker 1: do support the program, among the optional thank you gifts
- 38:18Speaker 1: available at the fifty dollars level, we'll send you your
- 38:22Speaker 1: choice of any pui Row or Father Brown release from
- 38:26Speaker 1: the BBC, and at the one hundred dollars level, we
- 38:29Speaker 1: will gladly send you puai Row's Finest Cases featuring eight
- 38:35Speaker 1: BBC Radio four pui row stories full cast, fully dramatized
