- 0:03SPEAKER_00: Good morning, everybody.
- 0:04SPEAKER_00: Looking forward to talking to you this morning.
- 0:07SPEAKER_00: I uh uh just just kind of excited about what we're gonna talk about today.
- 0:12SPEAKER_00: We've been talking about the whole idea of um you know, I you know, whatever.
- 0:18SPEAKER_00: Sometimes I I I like to be a little bit sarcastic or con confrontational, you might say.
- 0:24SPEAKER_00: But the bumper sticker, Christians aren't perfect, just forgiven.
- 0:29SPEAKER_00: And uh I used it to springboard into the idea that it drives me a little bit crazy that we we make what Jesus did for us, what we receive as a result of it.
- 0:41SPEAKER_00: Um we just kind of make it kind of smaller than it is, less consequential.
- 0:47SPEAKER_00: And uh we've been invited into a life right here and right now, not off in heaven, but right here and right now, we've been invited into a life that no, it's not instant and automatic.
- 0:59SPEAKER_00: But there's a life available to us that is absolutely incredible, man.
- 1:04SPEAKER_00: It's uh it's powerful, and um and I just want to push you, I want to nudge you, I want to, I am totally willing to make you and anybody else uncomfortable to the point of saying, I I want to live that life.
- 1:20SPEAKER_00: I want to get there, I want to experience it, and I want to experience as much of it as I possibly can.
- 1:26SPEAKER_00: I've said this to you before, but I think a great prayer for you to pray is uh, God, I don't want anything, I do not want anything you don't want me to have.
- 1:38SPEAKER_00: But I want everything you want me to have.
- 1:43SPEAKER_00: And uh I just think it's a great prayer to pray.
- 1:46SPEAKER_00: So, what I want to do today is talk to you.
- 1:48SPEAKER_00: We've been kind of talking about eternal life, just as kind of a conceptual way to say some of what we're trying to say, but eternal life is it is quantity of days, but it's a quality, a type of life.
- 2:01SPEAKER_00: And when does it start?
- 2:02SPEAKER_00: It started for you the moment you said yes to Jesus, the moments you you said, Jesus, would you please save me?
- 2:11SPEAKER_00: Uh I've I've made a mess of my life, and I believe you lived a life that was totally focused on uh putting me back into a relationship with you, with God, the Trinity, and um and I want I want you to save me and bring me into the fullness of that.
- 2:30SPEAKER_00: So in my journey, there's been several things that have been like critically important in um in what my wife and I have enjoyed, and and and and we've enjoyed teaching, but more again, what I'm really trying to say is we've enjoyed the benefit to ourselves.
- 2:46SPEAKER_00: And let me just give you a couple.
- 2:48SPEAKER_00: One is without a doubt, the number one thing is the integrity and power of God's word.
- 2:56SPEAKER_00: Um, I just believe God's word, Hebrews 4.12 says this that the word is living and active, and it's powerful, it's alive and powerful.
- 3:06SPEAKER_00: There's a verse in uh Philippians, I think it is, or Philomena, I'm not sure, uh, that the word of God is at work in you.
- 3:17SPEAKER_00: And um we're gonna talk more about that.
- 3:19SPEAKER_00: It's really what we're gonna talk about today.
- 3:21SPEAKER_00: But so the number one thing on my list would be just the confidence that God's word is true, it's alive and powerful, and it will accomplish what God sent it to do.
- 3:34SPEAKER_00: Um, the second thing that I'd tell you has blessed my wife and I all these years is what I would call iron iron, the Father's love.
- 3:41SPEAKER_00: Receive and rest.
- 3:42SPEAKER_00: Receive and rest in the Father's love.
- 3:47SPEAKER_00: Just make it a settled reality that God loves you.
- 3:51SPEAKER_00: Um a third thing would be you know, we we talk about the Trinity, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, and I believe we need to have an experientially driven relationship, in a sense, with all three.
- 4:03SPEAKER_00: I know there's one God, but for reasons beyond our understanding, he's chosen to express himself through three persons or whatever.
- 4:14SPEAKER_00: Uh the the the Trinity is tricky to explain.
- 4:18SPEAKER_00: But here's the deal: I believe you need to engage all three of them.
- 4:21SPEAKER_00: So the third thing is um uh the Holy Spirit and the things of the Spirit.
- 4:30SPEAKER_00: Um and praying in the Spirit is a big, big part of my life.
- 4:35SPEAKER_00: Uh, another one I'd mention is journaling, and then a third I would mention is community.
- 4:41SPEAKER_00: Just the simple importance of walking in relationship with other believers in such a way that you have to work through conflict, you have to work through challenging one another, caring for another, supporting one another in good times and bad, kind of like a marriage.
- 5:01SPEAKER_00: Because it's in community that uh you see the things about yourself that God wants to work on, and uh God uses you and the interaction with each other to reveal to other people the things God wants them to work on.
- 5:17SPEAKER_00: So um that's just a list of the things that I feel like are really, really, really critical to um my journey.
- 5:26SPEAKER_00: But what I want to talk to you about is the first one, and that is God's word.
- 5:29SPEAKER_00: I really believe that um your relationship to God uh can't go beyond your relationship to his word, his will, his, his declared um sense of who he is.
- 5:47SPEAKER_00: I I see the Bible as God's desire for us to understand creation and reality the best we're capable of.
- 5:57SPEAKER_00: And I believe any and everything we need to know about him, about how the universe operates and the rules of engagement with him and us, um, I believe they're in the Bible.
- 6:10SPEAKER_00: Uh obviously, in some sense, they're hidden.
- 6:13SPEAKER_00: I think they're hidden for us, not from us.
- 6:16SPEAKER_00: And uh I just think the Bible is a really, really important document.
- 6:21SPEAKER_00: So let me talk to you a little bit about this King Josiah, a guy in the Old Testament, and um he has uh this interesting experience.
- 6:31SPEAKER_00: He's the king, he becomes king when he's eight, and um he uh it says 18 years into his kingdom, his kingship, he uh sends one of his court servants, a guy named uh Shaphan, if I'm saying it correctly, he sends him to the temple on an assignment.
- 6:52SPEAKER_00: And so Shapon goes to the temple.
- 6:55SPEAKER_00: By the way, it's said of King Josiah that he did what was pleasing in the Lord's sight.
- 7:00SPEAKER_00: Um why is that important?
- 7:02SPEAKER_00: Because it could not have been said and was not said about most of his predecessors and successors.
- 7:09SPEAKER_00: Um he was a very unusual king because he did what was right in the Lord's sight.
- 7:15SPEAKER_00: So he sends Shaphan to go to the temple, and um he does, and he he does the assignment he's given.
- 7:23SPEAKER_00: But while he's there, Hilkiah the high priest, and this is uh this is all in uh in a story in uh the Old Testament.
- 7:34SPEAKER_00: Um Hilkiah says to Shaphan, hey, I found the book.
- 7:40SPEAKER_00: I found the book.
- 7:42SPEAKER_00: And I just love that phrase.
- 7:43SPEAKER_00: It obviously says more.
- 7:44SPEAKER_00: It says, I found the book of the law in the Lord's temple.
- 7:47SPEAKER_00: Now here's the thing.
- 7:48SPEAKER_00: What does that tell you right away?
- 7:50SPEAKER_00: They had not been reading the book, studying the book, living by the book.
- 7:55SPEAKER_00: They had not used the book as their uh foundational posture toward God and reality and each other.
- 8:02SPEAKER_00: They were kind of winging it by memory and making stuff up on their own.
- 8:09SPEAKER_00: So it says, I f Hilkiah tells Shaphan, I found the book.
- 8:14SPEAKER_00: Um Shapon reads the book, and he comes back to the king, he reports out his mission, his assignment, and then he says this, hey, uh I've Hilkiah the priest gave me this scroll.
- 8:28SPEAKER_00: And uh Kings, hey, read it.
- 8:30SPEAKER_00: Well, when the king reads it, it rocks him to his core.
- 8:35SPEAKER_00: Rocks him to his core, and here's what it says.
- 8:38SPEAKER_00: He says to Shapon, Go to the temple and speak to the Lord for me and for the people.
- 8:43SPEAKER_00: Inquire about the words written in this scroll that has been found.
- 8:47SPEAKER_00: For we have not been doing everything it says we must do.
- 8:51SPEAKER_00: Now I would say like this, yes, to that.
- 8:53SPEAKER_00: We've not been doing everything it says we must do.
- 8:56SPEAKER_00: But I would also say this we've not been enjoying everything it says we can enjoy.
- 9:02SPEAKER_00: We've not been receiving everything it says we can receive.
- 9:08SPEAKER_00: We've not been living everything it says we can live, not in a condemning way, but the bottom line is the Bible is where we find who God is, what's this story he's telling, what's our part in the story, and what what is the the limits, the boundaries of the potential interaction I can have with him, myself, others, my destiny, and the blessings he wants and challenges he wants me to walk in.
- 9:44SPEAKER_00: All I'm trying to say today is this we've got to find the book, and then we've got to eat the book.
- 9:53SPEAKER_00: Eat the book.
- 9:55SPEAKER_00: I I've heard it said this way, and I and I kind of like it.
- 9:58SPEAKER_00: Um what do you do with the Bible?
- 10:01SPEAKER_00: Well, you read it, you pray it, you think it, you say it, you live it, and you seek to give it away.
- 10:15SPEAKER_00: Eternal life is going to expand and explode as you develop a relationship with God's word, as you eat the book that God's left for us to give us a revelation about himself.
- 10:32SPEAKER_00: Man, I'm telling you, man, this stuff is fun and exciting.
- 10:36SPEAKER_00: Bless you guys.
- 10:38SPEAKER_00: I will see you again next week later.
