Latest / The Yield Doctor with James Deaker / Shiv Gupta Earnings May 2025
Transcript
- 0:00Today I'm going to be talking to Shiv
- 0:03Gupta about what we can learn from the
- 0:05latest earnings release cycle in adtech.
- 0:08Shiv has been in digital media a long
- 0:11time and previously had sales roles at
- 0:14ad.com AOL and Critio and for the last
- 0:18seven years he's been working as the
- 0:20founder and CEO of the U of digital that
- 0:24offers professional coaching and
- 0:26training around all aspects of adtech
- 0:28and digital media. most relevant for
- 0:31today's discussion is that he publishes
- 0:33a newsletter on key trends in the
- 0:35industry and he's been publishing
- 0:37observations as announcements had made
- 0:39in the earning cycle. One piece of
- 0:42context that I'll give given the rapidly
- 0:44evolving economic cycle in the US is
- 0:47that we're recording this on May 16 and
- 0:50the big news from this last week was a
- 0:5390-day reduction in the tariffs between
- 0:56the US and China and this that has
- 0:58caused a broad market rally. With that
- 1:01as context, Shiv, I'm so happy that
- 1:03we're able to talk today. Yeah, thrilled
- 1:06to be here, James. Thanks for having me.
- 1:08Excellent. Now, Shv, I want to get into
- 1:09some of the themes that we're seeing,
- 1:11but for those that don't read your
- 1:13newsletter yet, uh, can you ground us in
- 1:16what's been happening the last few weeks
- 1:18in the earning cycle? Who's surprised on
- 1:21the upside and who missed? Yeah,
- 1:23absolutely. So, you know, I think the
- 1:25earning cycle for Q1 has been pretty
- 1:28interesting to monitor. I think, you
- 1:30know, coming into it, everyone was
- 1:32feeling skittish for a few reasons. one,
- 1:34Q4 was a little soft uh across the
- 1:37board. Um, and you know, people
- 1:40obviously kind of look at the last
- 1:42quarter and remember the most recent
- 1:44quarter as kind of like a uh indicator
- 1:46of what will happen, you know, in the
- 1:48next quarter. And so I think people were
- 1:49a little skittish about what would
- 1:50happen in Q1. Um, and so I think people
- 1:53were nicely surprised to see that mostly
- 1:56across the board things looked up. Um,
- 1:58you know, Google, uh, or, you know, I
- 2:00should say Alphabet, Meta, earnings were
- 2:03positive for those guys. Um, and Amazon,
- 2:06I think, was like the one that was a
- 2:08little bit kind of on the the fence, but
- 2:10I think generally speaking, like it was
- 2:12good from the advertising standpoint,
- 2:14right? I think overall Amazon's running
- 2:16into some stuff, but overall it was
- 2:18okay. And I don't think the stock took
- 2:19much of a hit. But you know if you look
- 2:22across the board the DSPs you know
- 2:24especially you know trade desk um you
- 2:27know Viant others and then SSPs as well
- 2:30Pubmatic Magnite everyone kind of beat
- 2:33expectations for the most part. There
- 2:34were some outliers. I think some of the
- 2:36hold codes um you know hold codes are
- 2:38obviously a very different business than
- 2:39the tech companies. Not all hold codes
- 2:42are doing well. Publus is doing well but
- 2:44the other ones are are you know quarter
- 2:46over quarter they're they're running
- 2:47into challenges. And then you know some
- 2:49of the legacy traditional media
- 2:51companies um you know the paramounts of
- 2:53the world etc are are still struggling
- 2:55but overall the advertising sector the
- 2:58tech sector looked pretty healthy in Q1
- 3:00and that was surprising to folks. So I
- 3:03think the market and the share prices of
- 3:05these stocks saw a big pop. Um and then
- 3:07also you know one other thing to note is
- 3:10guidance for the rest of the year has
- 3:13been not great and that is to be
- 3:15expected because you know we're we're
- 3:17still in this kind of moment of
- 3:18uncertainty uh in terms of
- 3:20macroeconomics and tariffs and things
- 3:21like that. So that's kind of what we're
- 3:23seeing at a high level. Got it. Uh just
- 3:25to drill into one area that you talked
- 3:27about. You talked about some of the
- 3:28traditional cable companies that are now
- 3:30obviously doing CTV and streaming.
- 3:33Paramont, Warner Brothers down year on
- 3:36year. Uh it seems like there's not a lot
- 3:38of prospect for growth in these segments
- 3:40and the market is more focused on
- 3:42whether they can increase their
- 3:43profitability. Would would that be fair?
- 3:45Yeah, I think that's right. I mean,
- 3:47these companies obviously have legacy
- 3:49businesses that are, you know, slowly
- 3:51bleeding out, uh, you know, in terms of
- 3:53linear and and broadcast and cable. Um,
- 3:56you know, they're all doing their darn
- 3:58best to to move into streaming and
- 4:01digital obviously, but that's a tough
- 4:03category. And there's all sorts of new
- 4:05competitors in that category that they
- 4:07haven't dealt with before, right? It's
- 4:08Netflix, it's Disney Plus. I mean, I
- 4:10guess Disney you could put in both
- 4:11buckets, but it's Netflix, it's Roku,
- 4:13right? It's Amazon. And um, and that
- 4:16market, the CTV market is so fragmented.
- 4:19Um, and it's hard to get market share,
- 4:21right? And so it's easy for for us to
- 4:23sit here and say like, "Oh, well, they
- 4:24should just kind of move into
- 4:26streaming." Well, you know, being a
- 4:28behemoth in linear and then just moving
- 4:30into streaming is not as easy as it
- 4:31seems. Um, and so they they have a tough
- 4:34road ahead in terms of profitability, to
- 4:36your point, growth, um, and just, you
- 4:38know, their their financial outlook in
- 4:39general. Uh, another announcement from
- 4:42the last actually two days is that
- 4:44Microsoft is shutting down Xander. Uh
- 4:47obviously Xander has been around for a
- 4:48really long time in one form or another.
- 4:51Is this a slight positive for the rest
- 4:54of the ad tech companies that there's
- 4:56one less player in the space or is it a
- 4:59negative in the sense that it's um sort
- 5:01of reaffirmation of the fact that this
- 5:03is a tough space to play in?
- 5:06Um I guess it's a little bit of both. Uh
- 5:08in general I think it's positive for the
- 5:11other players, right? Because to your
- 5:12point, one less competitor, one less big
- 5:14name kind of going uh after those
- 5:16budgets. And so, you know, I think the
- 5:18trade desks, the Yahoos, the Amazons,
- 5:21the Googles of the world saw that news
- 5:23yesterday and, you know, had a had a
- 5:24little mini celebration of like, okay,
- 5:26cool. Let's go after these customers.
- 5:28Let's get some of that budget into our
- 5:29DSP. I think on the flip side, to your
- 5:31point, um the DSP business is hard,
- 5:34right? When a company like Microsoft is
- 5:36basically shutting down their DSP, um
- 5:38you know, that tells you a lot about the
- 5:40sector. uh and it's a low margin
- 5:42business. It's a extremely competitive
- 5:45business. Um I think the margins are
- 5:47getting compressed further and further
- 5:48and further. Uh and so I I think it's a
- 5:51tough road and so you know on one hand
- 5:53yes they should see a bit of a windfall
- 5:55of revenue coming from uh Microsoft and
- 5:58Xander sunsetting their DSP. On the
- 6:00other hand, it's just kind of
- 6:01reaffirmation of like this is a tough
- 6:03ride. I think what we're gonna see is
- 6:05like the richer the the rich get richer,
- 6:08right? Right. So, I'd say the big three,
- 6:09the big four in the DSP sector will grab
- 6:12a lot of that money that Xander is um,
- 6:15you know, pushing out because Xander, if
- 6:17you think about it, was more of an
- 6:18enterprise DSP. It was working with
- 6:20bigger customers. It wasn't working with
- 6:21mid and longtail. And so, I think some
- 6:23of the mid and longtail DSPs will
- 6:25probably not see the upside of it. And I
- 6:27do think we're going to see more
- 6:28consolidation in the DSP category, uh,
- 6:31you know, looking forward a year from
- 6:32now, two years from now, uh, where
- 6:34companies didn't necessarily see the
- 6:35benefit and the rich just got richer.
- 6:37Yeah.
- 6:38uh when you look at earnings and you've
- 6:40already touched on this briefly, it's a
- 6:42reflection of both what happened in the
- 6:44last quarter and also sort of guidance
- 6:46on what is going to happen for the rest
- 6:48of the year. And you mentioned there
- 6:50hasn't been a lot of uh guidance, but
- 6:52what did you read in the announcements
- 6:54in terms of expectations going forward
- 6:56for the rest of the year? Yeah, so I
- 6:58think guidance is, you know, being
- 7:00frozen or being cut by a lot of these
- 7:02companies again because of uncertainty
- 7:04and the macroeconomic climate climate.
- 7:06Um, I think that Q2 has been soft
- 7:09already. Like we're hearing that Q2 has
- 7:11been soft across the board for a lot of
- 7:13companies. Q1, you know, we were kind of
- 7:16riding a wave from Q4 into Q1. Um, you
- 7:19know, people were kind of pumped, I
- 7:21think, about the new administration, you
- 7:23know, and and how it's going to be pro
- 7:25economy and, you know, pro uh pro
- 7:28business. Uh, and I think people were
- 7:30riding high from that. And then all of a
- 7:31sudden, you know, everyone got hit with
- 7:33this hammer of tariffs. And so Q2 has
- 7:35been soft. I think the guidance that
- 7:37you're seeing is a reflection of Q2
- 7:40having a soft start. Um and so I think
- 7:43you know we're going to have the same
- 7:44conversation in 3 months and say like Q2
- 7:47didn't look so good. Um and I think a
- 7:49lot of these stock prices are probably
- 7:50going to get hit from that. But I think
- 7:52you know the big picture is important
- 7:54here. if things are stabilizing like
- 7:56we've seen in the last couple of weeks,
- 7:58you know, that the tariff, you know,
- 8:00between China and the US has been um cut
- 8:03down or frozen, I forget ex exactly the
- 8:05specifics there, but um I think, you
- 8:08know, the big picture hopefully is that
- 8:10if the tariffs kind of goes away, which
- 8:12is not, you know, something that we can
- 8:14fully expect to happen, but if it does
- 8:16kind of go away, like we should be on
- 8:18the right track, we should be up and to
- 8:19the right. And so while Q2 may not look
- 8:21great and may hurt the 2025 outlook for
- 8:24a lot of companies, hopefully by the
- 8:25time Q3 and Q4 roll around, we're kind
- 8:27of like where we were in Q1.
- 8:31So that this is the yield doctor
- 8:33podcast, so I have to ask about pricing
- 8:35and demand dynamics and to some extent
- 8:37you're already creating the right bridge
- 8:39for me talking about Q1 into Q2. I think
- 8:42one of the interesting questions is
- 8:44always is sort of media spend a leading
- 8:47indicator of the the state of the
- 8:49economy or a lagging one. Um, you know,
- 8:52I'm currently seeing that in the face of
- 8:54a lot of this uncertainty, people are
- 8:56holding back budgets. But if we have
- 8:59entered a period of some stability and
- 9:01there is more certainty around tariffs,
- 9:04how long do you expect the lag to be
- 9:07between that playing out and okay, we're
- 9:09in a better environment and budget
- 9:12starting to come back and the and the
- 9:14media industry broadly being in a
- 9:16healthier place. Yeah, it's a really
- 9:19interesting question. I mean I think it
- 9:20depends on a lot of factors. You can
- 9:22look at kind of legacy how how media has
- 9:26reacted in the past and I think there is
- 9:28usually a bit you know I think the
- 9:31industry reacts quicker when it's on the
- 9:34the downswing right to your point and I
- 9:36think it reacts a little bit slower to
- 9:38get going again. Um I think it depends
- 9:41the the lag time will depend on some
- 9:44other factors right so it's obviously
- 9:47economic stuff but it's also just like
- 9:49the what what is the administration
- 9:52signaling around a bunch of stuff right
- 9:54so that's geopolitical things right that
- 9:57affects the economy um it's rates you
- 10:00know that affects the economy um it's
- 10:03the deficit and how we're treating that
- 10:04it's taxes you know and and also I think
- 10:07in general it's like stability versus
- 10:10instability, right? I think like one of
- 10:11the big reasons why people are a little
- 10:14frozen right now, it's not 100% tariffs.
- 10:17It's more uncertainty and instability
- 10:19and kind of like how the administration
- 10:21is just kind of whiplashing back and
- 10:22forth between policy. And so I think
- 10:25what people want to see in the markets
- 10:26and and in media is stability and like
- 10:29kind of, you know, good consistent
- 10:31decision-making. And I don't know if
- 10:32we're going to get that at any point.
- 10:34And so I think the lag, you know, I
- 10:36think the lag could be slow um in terms
- 10:39of kind of reactivating budgets. Yeah.
- 10:42Uh I was going to ask you a question of
- 10:43what is the top of the stack of things
- 10:45driving the behavior and and obviously
- 10:47the political sort of uncertainty
- 10:49tariffs is is in the top one or two. So
- 10:51my question I I'll pivot and ask you
- 10:54aside from tariffs, what is the other
- 10:57thing that seems to be driving
- 10:58expectations around valuation? Is it the
- 11:02impact of AI? Is it privacy regulation?
- 11:05Is it potential consolidation? So other
- 11:08than tariffs, what's the what's the big
- 11:10story right now? Yeah, I think I mean
- 11:12it's all those things for sure. Um I
- 11:15think those things are not like as
- 11:17immediately impactful on the market. I
- 11:19feel like the market's priced in like
- 11:21you know AI is changing the world and so
- 11:23you know the market's kind of priced
- 11:24some of that stuff in. Um, I think where
- 11:27more like whiplash happens and
- 11:29reactionary kind of behavior happens is
- 11:31honestly rates, like Fed rates, like we
- 11:34see this all the time. Anytime the Fed
- 11:36says anything in terms of rates, that
- 11:38pushes the market up or down
- 11:40significantly. And I think long-term,
- 11:43people want to see rates come down,
- 11:44right? And if rates come down, money
- 11:46gets cheaper, capital is cheaper, uh,
- 11:48it's easier to invest, um, and, you
- 11:51know, the the economy starts moving,
- 11:53right? And so, uh, obviously you have to
- 11:55balance that with inflation. And
- 11:57inflation is, you know, still in a
- 12:00little bit of a tricky spot. And so, um,
- 12:02the Fed is going to do the right things,
- 12:05um, to manage those two those two
- 12:06variables, but I think rates, right?
- 12:08Like the market positively reacts to
- 12:11interest rates. Okay. Um, so a lot of
- 12:14what we've talked about sort of your
- 12:15observations around what's happening.
- 12:16Now, I'm going to push you on on an
- 12:18opinion. uh if you had to summarize your
- 12:22own sentiment or or outlook on the
- 12:24market for the next sort of 6 months or
- 12:27really for the rest of 2025, are you
- 12:30relatively bullish or bearish on the
- 12:33outlook for ad tech and sort of digital
- 12:35media broadly? I'm bullish. I'm always
- 12:38bullish, but I'm I'm particularly
- 12:40bullish right now. Um I think there's a
- 12:43bunch of interesting stuff going on in
- 12:45terms of antitrust, right? like the
- 12:48antitrusting is real. It's going to, you
- 12:50know, if executed properly, you know,
- 12:52everybody will win from that. Um, of
- 12:55course, there's no guarantee it'll be
- 12:56executed properly, but, you know, let's
- 12:58see. Uh, I think that's a positive
- 13:00thing. I think the the AI kind of uh
- 13:03revolution is going to be extremely
- 13:05positive and create tons of efficiency.
- 13:08Um, you know, there's obviously going to
- 13:09be some short-term pain in terms of
- 13:11employment and and layoffs and things
- 13:12like that, but I think it's going to
- 13:14tremendously improve the efficiency of
- 13:16the industry and just like the
- 13:17innovation that we're we're like, you
- 13:20know, that that that is exists in the
- 13:22space. I think, you know, it's
- 13:23interesting to be in this moment and be
- 13:25like, wow, there's so much innovation
- 13:26right now. Um because in every moment
- 13:29right you always feel that there's a lot
- 13:30of innovation but looking back over the
- 13:32last three to five maybe maybe 10 years
- 13:34there actually hasn't been much
- 13:36innovation compared to what we're going
- 13:38through right now right so I think
- 13:39between antitrust between the AI stuff
- 13:42um and uh you know there there's a
- 13:45couple other things I think also just
- 13:47between like kind of the acceleration of
- 13:51um you know consumer behavior towards
- 13:53digital the migration from streaming to
- 13:56or migration from traditional to
- 13:57digital, all those things, right? I
- 13:59think are kind of creating this melting
- 14:01pot of growth and excitement and and a
- 14:03bull market for for this industry
- 14:05specifically.
- 14:07Shiv, thank you for taking the time. Uh
- 14:10really appreciate it. If people want to
