- 0:05Speaker 1: Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the right time. A wave original.
- 0:09Speaker 1: My name is Beaumontie Jones. Thanks for listening wherever you
- 0:11Speaker 1: get your podcast. Thanks for watching us on YouTube. Subscribe, like,
- 0:16Speaker 1: rate us, review us, give us five stars. You only
- 0:18Speaker 1: give us four stars. I'm inclined to believe you are
- 0:21Speaker 1: a hater. Wow. It is a weekend with a lot
- 0:27Speaker 1: of football. We are going to start here with the
- 0:32Speaker 1: Bills and the Broncos. where the Broncos won 33-30 in
- 0:37Speaker 1: overtime over the Bills. This is very interesting where this
- 0:44Speaker 1: was a very close game and often an exciting game.
- 0:50Speaker 2: But Ryan, I would not say that it was a
- 0:53Speaker 2: great game.
- 0:54Speaker 3: No. No, it was sloppy.
- 0:57Speaker 1: Yeah, it was not very well played, right?
- 1:00Speaker 2: But it sure was compelling.
- 1:02Speaker 3: Yes.
- 1:03Speaker 2: Okay.
- 1:04Speaker 1: It was top to bottom compelling. And in the end,
- 1:07Speaker 1: it was the most devastating game that I have ever seen.
- 1:14Speaker 1: And the reason that I say it was the most
- 1:16Speaker 1: devastating game I have ever seen is is I have
- 1:20Speaker 1: never seen a game that ended with both teams so devastated.
- 1:25Speaker 2: Now, shout out to the Denver Broncos.
- 1:27Speaker 1: I guess we ain't really get a real chance to
- 1:28Speaker 1: look at them because the players hadn't found this out yet.
- 1:32Speaker 1: But they won this game. And Sean Payton did his
- 1:34Speaker 1: postgame media stuff.
- 1:35Speaker 2: He left.
- 1:36Speaker 1: He came back and was like, oh, by the way,
- 1:39Speaker 1: got to let you guys know something. Bo Nix has
- 1:42Speaker 1: a broken bone in his ankle. He's going to have
- 1:44Speaker 1: surgery on Tuesday. He's out for the rest of the playoffs.
- 1:52Speaker 1: That was a big win for that team. If I'm
- 1:54Speaker 1: not mistaken, it was Denver's first playoff win in 10
- 1:57Speaker 1: years since the 2015 season when they won the Super Bowl, right?
- 2:01Speaker 2: They won this at home. They won it in overtime.
- 2:05Speaker 1: This was a make-it-happen sort of situation. They got it done.
- 2:12Speaker 1: Their quarterback did not play badly. I did not think
- 2:14Speaker 1: that their quarterback played well.
- 2:16Speaker 3: He did make a couple of massive throws.
- 2:18Speaker 1: He did.
- 2:19Speaker 3: And we are combined in our Bo Nix skepticism.
- 2:24Speaker 1: But he made some big, I'm not going to pretend
- 2:26Speaker 1: like he was terrible.
- 2:27Speaker 3: Correct.
- 2:28Speaker 4: Right.
- 2:28Speaker 2: There's no need to act like he played badly.
- 2:30Speaker 1: He made those big throws. And in a game like that,
- 2:32Speaker 1: the ability to make those big throws matters. Right. However,
- 2:36Speaker 1: this was not a, see, we told you what I
- 2:39Speaker 1: was wrong about, but it's not going to vindicate in
- 2:42Speaker 1: either direction is the point that I'm making there.
- 2:46Speaker 2: But he's got a broken bone in his ankle?
- 2:48Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 2:49Speaker 1: Like, you got that big emotional win, and now your
- 2:52Speaker 1: quarterback is out, and Sean Payton says that Jarrett Stidham
- 2:56Speaker 1: will be ready.
- 2:58Speaker 2: Ready for what? I'm acting like I ain't never seen him.
- 3:01Speaker 2: Ready for what?
- 3:04Speaker 3: No. All right.
- 3:07Speaker 1: Auburn, look, I've seen... No, I'm just telling you right now, man.
- 3:11Speaker 1: Bless you guys' hearts. And if you manage to win this,
- 3:13Speaker 1: you got a boss-ass defense. Don't get me wrong.
- 3:15Speaker 2: Losing your starting quarterback is devastating.
- 3:18Speaker 3: Yes.
- 3:18Speaker 1: Okay? And so I'll put it like this, Ryan. Regardless
- 3:22Speaker 1: of what our Bo Nix skepticism is, I think we
- 3:24Speaker 1: both agree.
- 3:24Speaker 2: He is a starting.
- 3:26Speaker 3: Starting NFL quarterback, for sure.
- 3:27Speaker 2: Starting NFL quarterback. Jerry Stidham is not.
- 3:30Speaker 3: Not.
- 3:30Speaker 1: Okay. And look, maybe I don't talk his ass into
- 3:33Speaker 1: going out here and really making it happen. You know
- 3:36Speaker 1: what I mean? I said Kirk Cousins wasn't a starting
- 3:37Speaker 1: NFL quarterback. Ten fucking years later, he's made $ 857 million.
- 3:42Speaker 1: You know what I'm saying? Sometimes it goes that way.
- 3:45Speaker 1: But I can't.
- 3:47Speaker 2: Can you think?
- 3:47Speaker 3: Have you?
- 3:48Speaker 2: Like, I'm trying to think in the.
- 3:50Speaker 1: Playoffs of a circumstance where a quarterback was just out.
- 3:56Speaker 1: Just out of nowhere.
- 3:57Speaker 3: No, I mean, the closest comparison would obviously be, you know,
- 4:01Speaker 3: Carson Wentz about eight or nine years ago. Yes.
- 4:04Speaker 5: Early.
- 4:05Speaker 2: Like, at the end of the regular season.
- 4:07Speaker 3: Yes, but that was in, like, I think early December. Yes.
- 4:10Speaker 3: And they were the number one seed, and Carson Wentz was...
- 4:13Speaker 3: You know, he was looking like he was going to
- 4:14Speaker 3: win the MVP. Right.
- 4:16Speaker 1: That was a long time ago, wasn't it?
- 4:19Speaker 3: Yes, correct. And then, I mean, and then Nick Foles
- 4:22Speaker 3: gets hot. Right. But Nick Foles is.
- 4:25Speaker 1: It's a weird case.
- 4:26Speaker 3: It's Tom Brady compared to Jerry So.
- 4:28Speaker 2: He's only good one place.
- 4:30Speaker 3: Yes.
- 4:30Speaker 2: But that one place, he's really good.
- 4:31Speaker 1: But, like, Tom Brady got hurt in the first half
- 4:34Speaker 1: of the 2001 AFC Championship game, and they had to
- 4:37Speaker 1: go back to Drew Bledsoe.
- 4:38Speaker 3: Right. Right.
- 4:39Speaker 1: But Tom Brady was back for the Super Bowl.
- 4:41Speaker 3: Yes.
- 4:42Speaker 1: Right? You're going to the AFC Championship game. Your quarterback
- 4:45Speaker 1: is out. That is, to me, devastating. Like, if they
- 4:49Speaker 1: can hold it together in spite of that fact, blessings
- 4:52Speaker 1: to all the people that are involved. But that seems
- 4:55Speaker 1: to be devastating. However, I personally, in my life, have
- 4:58Speaker 1: never seen a team of professionals ever be more devastated
- 5:04Speaker 1: than the Buffalo bills appear to be after losing this
- 5:08Speaker 1: game to the Denver Broncos. I've never seen anything quite
- 5:13Speaker 1: like this, especially since it wasn't the Superbowl, especially since
- 5:18Speaker 1: it wasn't the AFC championship game. Now, look, I'm gonna
- 5:21Speaker 1: tell you this. This is one thing about covering sports
- 5:24Speaker 1: that I don't hear people like talk about this much about,
- 5:29Speaker 1: but I will never forget this as long as I live.
- 5:33Speaker 1: It was the first time that I ever went into
- 5:37Speaker 1: a locker room of a losing team after an elimination game.
- 5:44Speaker 1: It is the saddest, the mustiest, the quietest, the tensest
- 5:53Speaker 1: scenario that you could have. It was the year 2007,
- 5:58Speaker 1: Michigan State lost to North Carolina in basketball, the second
- 6:01Speaker 1: round of the tournament at Lawrence Joel in Winston-Salem. And
- 6:05Speaker 1: I went in that Michigan State locker room, man, and
- 6:07Speaker 1: them boys was just bombed out, okay? And it was just...
- 6:12Speaker 1: Just that, that thousand yard stare type situation. Like, what
- 6:15Speaker 1: do you do? You know, like this is a game
- 6:17Speaker 1: with every, and as I recall in that game, it
- 6:19Speaker 1: was close all the way until like the last two minutes.
- 6:21Speaker 1: And then racial Terry hit like three threes in the
- 6:23Speaker 1: last two minutes. It was bananas, but they thought they
- 6:25Speaker 1: had a chance and then they were done.
- 6:28Speaker 3: Okay.
- 6:29Speaker 1: Now let's talk about this in the context of the
- 6:31Speaker 1: Buffalo bills. No, they did not win their division, but
- 6:36Speaker 1: they had just been consistently getting knocked out of the
- 6:39Speaker 1: playoffs by quarterbacks who were most of us believe, well,
- 6:45Speaker 1: Patrick Mahomes will be in the Hall of Fame. And
- 6:47Speaker 1: I think that most of us believe that Joe Burrow
- 6:50Speaker 1: is on a Hall of Fame track. That's the direction
- 6:52Speaker 1: it goes in. This time though, there's no question that
- 6:57Speaker 1: Josh Allen was the guy in the AFC, right? He
- 7:02Speaker 1: was the, that dude, this was his chance, his nemesis
- 7:05Speaker 1: had clearly been Mahomes.
- 7:07Speaker 2: Mahomes was not there. Burrow, not there. This is for you.
- 7:11Speaker 1: It is you on one side. It is Bo Nix
- 7:15Speaker 1: on the other. This was the opportunity. And they lost.
- 7:21Speaker 1: And I cannot think of a time that I have
- 7:25Speaker 1: seen a quarterback of a team at the podium after
- 7:31Speaker 1: a game sobbing. In the way that Josh Allen was.
- 7:37Speaker 3: Not crying.
- 7:38Speaker 1: Sobbing. This is not an exaggeration. It was literal sobbing.
- 7:42Speaker 2: Tears running down his face. Eyes puffy. He was done for.
- 7:48Speaker 2: Did you see Deion Dawkins?
- 7:49Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 7:50Speaker 2: In the locker room. Like, these guys.
- 7:54Speaker 1: This may be over for them as franchise. I mean,
- 7:59Speaker 1: not like the Buffalo Bills will never win a game again, right?
- 8:02Speaker 1: But for this run and what it's been. I can't,
- 8:07Speaker 1: I'm reluctant, like, okay, so I'm somewhat reluctant to say
- 8:10Speaker 1: that they cannot overcome what this was. However, the only
- 8:14Speaker 1: reason I'm reluctant to say it is I'm not, I've
- 8:17Speaker 1: never seen anything like this. Like, if any of you
- 8:21Speaker 1: can think of a time that you've seen a team
- 8:24Speaker 1: look this battered and this, they didn't feel like this
- 8:27Speaker 1: after the 13-second game.
- 8:29Speaker 3: No.
- 8:30Speaker 1: In that game, they were way closer to having won.
- 8:34Speaker 1: than this one, right? But this was the, have they
- 8:39Speaker 1: heard everything that we've been saying, Ryan, the if not now,
- 8:42Speaker 1: then when sort of situation?
- 8:44Speaker 2: And I guess it didn't feel that way then, right?
- 8:47Speaker 1: Is it that it feels this way now that it's
- 8:49Speaker 1: year eight for Josh Allen, it's year nine for McDermott?
- 8:55Speaker 1: Is it that everybody looked around and just said to themselves, damn,
- 8:57Speaker 1: I guess we just not gonna do this?
- 8:59Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, I think that the only comp to me,
- 9:03Speaker 3: is almost maybe the Elway Broncos, you know, losing three
- 9:06Speaker 3: AFC championship games.
- 9:08Speaker 2: Yeah, but they were at least in Super Bowls.
- 9:10Speaker 3: But then they came back and they essentially had to
- 9:12Speaker 3: retool the roster, including getting rid of the coach. Yeah, yeah.
- 9:14Speaker 1: It had two coaching changes because Wade Phillips had to
- 9:18Speaker 1: stop in between. But you're right. Those were the teams
- 9:22Speaker 1: in the new Broncos uniforms. That was a completely different
- 9:26Speaker 1: situation than the ones, like, the only real common thread
- 9:30Speaker 1: there was John Elway.
- 9:32Speaker 3: Yes.
- 9:32Speaker 4: Right.
- 9:33Speaker 3: And I think that might be the situation if the
- 9:34Speaker 3: Bills ever get over the hump. Yeah.
- 9:36Speaker 1: And I will also say those years in between, they
- 9:38Speaker 1: were down. Like those were not, they were not a
- 9:42Speaker 1: continuation of what it was. Those were down years. But
- 9:46Speaker 1: I don't recall John Elway being broken. Like I don't
- 9:49Speaker 1: remember Dan Reeves. They got Dan Reeves out of there
- 9:51Speaker 1: because John Elway couldn't stand him anymore. But I just
- 9:53Speaker 1: don't remember them feeling so broken down and defeated.
- 9:58Speaker 2: And I'm not saying this as a judge. of these
- 10:00Speaker 2: guys for feeling that way.
- 10:02Speaker 1: I'm just trying to figure out how it is that
- 10:04Speaker 1: you get back up off the ground after that. Like,
- 10:07Speaker 1: I think about how many times we see a team
- 10:10Speaker 1: that loses a Super Bowl. And then they can't turn
- 10:13Speaker 1: it back around. Like it's so hard for them to
- 10:16Speaker 1: get back up off the ground after this. This team
- 10:19Speaker 1: looked more devastated than any team that I had seen
- 10:24Speaker 1: lose the Superbowl. So I don't know where they go
- 10:28Speaker 1: from here. Like that is, it's, it's, it feels unfair
- 10:32Speaker 1: to immediately start looking to the future about them, except
- 10:35Speaker 1: what I saw there was so unprecedented. But if you
- 10:37Speaker 1: want to talk about the present with them, we can
- 10:40Speaker 1: talk about the press. Okay. And I'm sorry for you guys,
- 10:43Speaker 1: Denver Broncos. We got a lot more time to talk
- 10:46Speaker 1: about y'all a little bit later. And to be honest,
- 10:48Speaker 1: I really don't know what to say about y'all. Y'all
- 10:50Speaker 1: got Jared Stidham. He going to be playing quarterback. I don't,
- 10:52Speaker 1: I don't, I'm going to need a little bit more
- 10:54Speaker 1: time to figure out what to do about you guys, okay?
- 10:57Speaker 1: But hey, hey, Bo Jones care, don't nobody else care.
- 10:59Speaker 1: Don't you think I'm out here ignoring you right now, right?
- 11:01Speaker 1: I'm just trying to make sure I show you the
- 11:03Speaker 1: proper respect. Now, we had this thing happen, right? We
- 11:10Speaker 1: put out video on social media. And as many of
- 11:14Speaker 1: you guys know, I've talked about it all here, talked
- 11:16Speaker 1: about it with Ryan. I love people that way, but
- 11:19Speaker 1: you know, just generally speaking, I hate social media production, right?
- 11:22Speaker 1: Like it's, you know, the game is kind of sort of,
- 11:25Speaker 1: we get out here and we, y'all get mad at me.
- 11:34Speaker 1: That really like gets what they call, what's the word, Ryan? Engagement.
- 11:39Speaker 3: Yes, engagement. Yeah, yeah.
- 11:41Speaker 1: So, you know, stuff gets y'all engaged. And so we
- 11:44Speaker 1: had put out a video where I made the point
- 11:46Speaker 1: that if you're Josh Allen, You can't lose a game
- 11:49Speaker 1: to Bo Nix. Now in the video and on the podcast,
- 11:53Speaker 1: I very clearly say, I know that quarterbacks don't play
- 11:57Speaker 1: against each other, but it sure does feel that way, right?
- 12:02Speaker 2: You lazy motherfuckers.
- 12:03Speaker 1: It's amazing. Y'all don't want to read, and you can't
- 12:05Speaker 1: even click a button for 45 seconds to get to
- 12:07Speaker 1: the end of it, right? Y'all was all my ass, boy,
- 12:10Speaker 1: all over it.
- 12:11Speaker 2: Oh, this is stupid take.
- 12:12Speaker 1: He think he's so much smarter than everybody else, but
- 12:14Speaker 1: he think quarterbacks play against each other. Now, those of
- 12:17Speaker 1: you who listen to this show, and Ryan, I bet
- 12:18Speaker 1: you have noticed this about me. I am very careful
- 12:21Speaker 1: about that.
- 12:22Speaker 3: Yes.
- 12:22Speaker 2: I understand that that's not really how it works, except sometimes....
- 12:32Speaker 1: It kind of is in application.
- 12:35Speaker 3: Yes.
- 12:36Speaker 1: Okay.
- 12:37Speaker 3: They just, cause they're just, cause they're not guarding each other.
- 12:39Speaker 3: It's not a matchup of the quarterback.
- 12:41Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 12:42Speaker 3: There's a reason why we put those graphics up.
- 12:44Speaker 2: You know what? It's kind of like, it's kind of
- 12:46Speaker 2: like a game of horse.
- 12:47Speaker 3: Yes.
- 12:48Speaker 1: Right. When you're playing against somebody at horse, you're not
- 12:51Speaker 1: really playing like, like I'll make a shot. You'll make
- 12:53Speaker 1: a shot. I missed a shot. Like maybe that's, that's
- 12:57Speaker 1: the way that we should look at this golf.
- 12:59Speaker 3: Same deal.
- 12:59Speaker 2: Very, very similar sort of situation.
- 13:02Speaker 1: Now, of course, the difference is in golf, everybody's playing
- 13:06Speaker 1: against the same course.
- 13:07Speaker 5: Yes.
- 13:08Speaker 1: You know, and maybe that's kind of sort of the thing,
- 13:10Speaker 1: and horse is not the exact thing. But sometimes somebody
- 13:14Speaker 1: throw the ball off the ground, off the glass, and
- 13:16Speaker 1: it go in, and you got to do the exact
- 13:18Speaker 1: same thing, right? Like sometimes this is what it comes
- 13:22Speaker 1: down to. Bottom line is.
- 13:26Speaker 2: We'll phrase it differently to make you feel better.
- 13:29Speaker 1: If you are the quarterback of the Buffalo Bills and
- 13:33Speaker 1: Bo Nix is the quarterback of the Denver Broncos, your
- 13:38Speaker 1: team needs to win that game no matter what the
- 13:44Speaker 1: surrounding circumstances are. Now, if Bo Nix comes out there
- 13:48Speaker 1: and Bo Nix throws for 400 yards on 30 of
- 13:52Speaker 1: 40 passing, hey man, all you can do.
- 13:59Speaker 3: Going back to the Nick Foles example. Nick Foles outplayed
- 14:03Speaker 3: Tom Brady in the Super Bowl. No one gets a
- 14:05Speaker 3: Tom Brady.
- 14:06Speaker 1: That's right. That's right. Sometimes.
- 14:08Speaker 3: Sometimes it's your day.
- 14:09Speaker 2: Yeah, sometimes it's your day. You tip your cap and
- 14:12Speaker 2: you give that person credit.
- 14:13Speaker 1: All right. But if Bo Nix just kind of sort
- 14:15Speaker 1: of has a day at the office and you turn
- 14:18Speaker 1: the ball over four times, including a, I hate so
- 14:24Speaker 1: much that Dominique is not on this week because he's
- 14:27Speaker 1: He had one of them turnovers that was reminiscent of
- 14:31Speaker 1: that game in Houston when he was out there throwing
- 14:33Speaker 1: bombs to square bodies at the end of the game.
- 14:36Speaker 1: And this was at the end of the first half
- 14:38Speaker 1: where he got out there and he decided to run.
- 14:41Speaker 1: And that that old Josh came out of him and
- 14:44Speaker 1: he gave the ball up. And quite honestly, that's the
- 14:46Speaker 1: margin of the game right there. OK, I generally try
- 14:50Speaker 1: to avoid that idea because everything every play in a
- 14:53Speaker 1: game is a function of the score. So if you
- 14:55Speaker 1: change the score, you change a lot of actions, activities
- 14:58Speaker 1: or whatever it is.
- 14:58Speaker 2: But on that one right there. Now, man, I think
- 15:00Speaker 2: that that that was it.
- 15:02Speaker 3: Right.
- 15:03Speaker 1: You kind of swung the game right there. If you're
- 15:05Speaker 1: Josh Allen, there is no way. I don't care who
- 15:08Speaker 1: you are. I don't care what quarterback you.
- 15:09Speaker 2: Are for turnovers. It's on you for turnovers.
- 15:15Speaker 1: And you're the guy that Josh Allen is who we
- 15:18Speaker 1: say he is.
- 15:19Speaker 2: It is on you.
- 15:22Speaker 1: There's no way around that. And the thing that I
- 15:26Speaker 1: applaud Josh Allen for is Josh Allen got that, right?
- 15:30Speaker 1: He got up at the microphone and he said, I
- 15:33Speaker 1: let everybody down, basically.
- 15:34Speaker 2: OK, now you have to worry, often worry about guys
- 15:38Speaker 2: who do that.
- 15:39Speaker 1: Generally, you know, because like as a main character syndrome
- 15:42Speaker 1: situation that often comes up when, you know, the guys
- 15:45Speaker 1: are the ones to do that. And people like, you know,
- 15:46Speaker 1: so the rest of us ain't here. Like those things
- 15:48Speaker 1: that come up. But no, no, no.
- 15:49Speaker 2: That was a dude taking accountability.
- 15:51Speaker 1: Right. And to me, the most endearing thing about Josh
- 15:55Speaker 1: Allen is that he is accountable. At every turn in this,
- 15:59Speaker 1: he has proven to be accountable. At every turn, I
- 16:01Speaker 1: need to get better at this. I'm going to go
- 16:04Speaker 1: get better at this. It is abundantly clear why everybody
- 16:07Speaker 1: that is in any proximity of him loves him because he.
- 16:11Speaker 2: Is that guy.
- 16:12Speaker 1: And to me, I see no quality that you can
- 16:15Speaker 1: have in a lot of work like he has that
- 16:18Speaker 1: is more important than being accountable, right? And I would
- 16:22Speaker 1: think we need to applaud him for being accountable.
- 16:26Speaker 2: And what I can't understand.
- 16:28Speaker 1: For the life of me is why so many of
- 16:31Speaker 1: you won't let him do it. I have been talking
- 16:38Speaker 1: about this for a very long time. It is the
- 16:42Speaker 1: collective desire of people in my business to see Josh
- 16:47Speaker 1: Allen do well. It is not simply that they are
- 16:51Speaker 1: observing him or think he's good or trying to uphold
- 16:54Speaker 1: predictions for reasons that I got guesses about. It's this rooting.
- 17:03Speaker 1: It's this, oh man, it hurts so bad for Josh Allen.
- 17:06Speaker 1: Josh didn't get to touch the ball in overtime. So
- 17:09Speaker 1: we need to change the rules so that Josh has
- 17:11Speaker 1: a chance to get the ball in overtime because Patrick
- 17:13Speaker 1: got the ball in overtime, right?
- 17:16Speaker 2: It's those things.
- 17:18Speaker 1: Josh hasn't won an MVP, so he wasn't first team
- 17:21Speaker 1: all pro, but we'll go ahead and give him one
- 17:23Speaker 1: of these. Okay, what? We keep seeing this happen and
- 17:29Speaker 1: you got to stop, right? It is ridiculous and it
- 17:33Speaker 1: is largely unprofessional. But the thing that I think makes
- 17:36Speaker 1: it so interesting is, I don't know, do you guys
- 17:41Speaker 1: not realize that you're doing this? Like, can you honestly
- 17:45Speaker 1: not see the huge difference in the way that people
- 17:49Speaker 1: treat it when Josh Allen comes up short, right? And again,
- 17:55Speaker 1: I understand why you might want it for him. But
- 18:00Speaker 1: four turnovers.
- 18:02Speaker 2: This was on him, right?
- 18:05Speaker 1: This wasn't on the refs for that, what, the interception
- 18:09Speaker 1: that could have been a catch or whatever. And I'm
- 18:11Speaker 1: going to tell you, this is my take on that,
- 18:13Speaker 1: all right? Could have gone either way. I thought that
- 18:17Speaker 1: it was an interception. I never thought that Brandon Cooks
- 18:19Speaker 1: had control in a way to make it a catch.
- 18:21Speaker 1: And this is the biggest thing for me. When I
- 18:24Speaker 1: see examples of simultaneous possession, in my mind at least,
- 18:28Speaker 1: it always feels like the defense, in order to get
- 18:31Speaker 1: a hold of it, has to like wrestle the ball away.
- 18:34Speaker 1: You know what I'm saying? Ryan, I don't know if
- 18:37Speaker 1: it looked this way to you, but it looked like
- 18:38Speaker 1: he was just like, hey, let me get that right fast.
- 18:39Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, they were like, almost caught it and
- 18:41Speaker 3: then he rolled and he came up with it.
- 18:43Speaker 1: Right, right. It wasn't, but you know what I'm talking about, right?
- 18:45Speaker 2: Like, with those guys getting locked up.
- 18:46Speaker 3: Yeah, they ripped, yeah.
- 18:47Speaker 2: There's like this tugging.
- 18:48Speaker 1: Sort of situation. I didn't see any tugging that was
- 18:51Speaker 1: going on there. He just got it, he rolled over it,
- 18:53Speaker 1: he had the ball. But you know part of why
- 18:55Speaker 1: that went that way? Because it was a little bit underthrown.
- 18:58Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 18:59Speaker 4: Right?
- 18:59Speaker 1: Like, he, this was the chance.
- 19:02Speaker 3: There's the third and 10 driving right before they kick
- 19:05Speaker 3: the field goal. Wide open, misses him.
- 19:07Speaker 1: Yes. Could have been a walk-in for a touchdown.
- 19:10Speaker 3: Yeah, and that's the margins of being, you know, a
- 19:15Speaker 3: great regular season quarterback and one of the all-time greats.
- 19:20Speaker 3: It's a thin margin, but he's nearly 30.
- 19:24Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 19:25Speaker 3: That's the thing that's wild.
- 19:26Speaker 1: It's not over, right? It's not like he'll never get
- 19:28Speaker 1: it done.
- 19:29Speaker 3: But he is past the age of being treated with
- 19:32Speaker 3: any sort of kid gloves.
- 19:32Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah.
- 19:33Speaker 3: No, no, no.
- 19:33Speaker 2: He's got an MVP.
- 19:35Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 19:36Speaker 1: And it's not like Lamar Jackson won an MVP at
- 19:37Speaker 1: like 22.
- 19:38Speaker 3: Yes.
- 19:39Speaker 1: You know, like he's got an MVP. He's been to
- 19:43Speaker 1: championship games. All of his peers, except for Lamar, have
- 19:48Speaker 1: been to a Super Bowl. But what? Lamar been just
- 19:51Speaker 1: as far as he has been. And we have, we
- 19:55Speaker 1: have given Lamar his hell for this year. Right. But
- 19:58Speaker 1: this is the thing that gets me about it in
- 20:00Speaker 1: terms of how we deal with Allen as it relates
- 20:01Speaker 1: specifically to this season. Um, Most of us would say
- 20:07Speaker 1: that the top two guys for the MVP this year
- 20:11Speaker 1: are Matthew Stafford and Drake May. So that is to say,
- 20:14Speaker 1: in a year where Patrick Mahomes, not only did he
- 20:17Speaker 1: not play well, he also wound up getting hurt. In
- 20:21Speaker 1: a year where Lamar Jackson was hurt for most of
- 20:24Speaker 1: the year, in a year where Joe Burrow was hurt
- 20:28Speaker 1: for most of the year, Josh Allen was not even
- 20:33Speaker 1: the second best quarterback in the league. Do I think
- 20:37Speaker 1: that Josh Allen is the second best quarterback in the NFL? Yes.
- 20:41Speaker 2: Or at the very least, the third.
- 20:43Speaker 1: Like, I think with he and Lamar, I still have
- 20:45Speaker 1: that as being very, very, very close. All right? But
- 20:50Speaker 1: two guys were better than him this year. And that
- 20:53Speaker 1: doesn't mean that they are necessarily better players. Like, do
- 20:56Speaker 1: I think Drake Mays is a better player than Josh Allen?
- 20:58Speaker 2: Maybe not, but.
- 20:59Speaker 1: He probably was a better player this year. You understand
- 21:02Speaker 1: what I mean? Like, it's a distinction that I do
- 21:03Speaker 1: think has a difference, okay? But even still, another, this
- 21:09Speaker 1: is Josh Allen's time. He was the MVP last year.
- 21:11Speaker 1: Other guys played better than him. Then you come into
- 21:14Speaker 1: a playoff game where, right, it's safe to say, Bo
- 21:18Speaker 1: Nix outplayed him.
- 21:20Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean... Turned the ball four times.
- 21:23Speaker 1: Right.
- 21:23Speaker 2: If I say it, Bo Nix, when he turned it
- 21:25Speaker 2: over twice, right?
- 21:25Speaker 3: Yes.
- 21:26Speaker 2: Okay.
- 21:26Speaker 1: I mean, again, not the greatest game, but Bo Nix
- 21:29Speaker 1: outplayed him, right? He did not play better than the
- 21:33Speaker 1: rest of the quarterbacks in the regular season. He was
- 21:35Speaker 1: not better than his adversary in this game. This year
- 21:40Speaker 1: for Josh Allen, All this weeping for Josh Allen, this
- 21:43Speaker 1: was his chance. Right.
- 21:45Speaker 2: On multiple levels. And he didn't do it.
- 21:49Speaker 6: Right.
- 21:50Speaker 1: And I'm not saying that this means something like fundamental
- 21:53Speaker 1: about his character, fundamental about his potential, any of this.
- 21:56Speaker 1: But the bottom line is it didn't get done because
- 21:58Speaker 1: he didn't do it.
- 22:01Speaker 2: And you know who seems to believe that and understand that?
- 22:04Speaker 1: Josh Allen. So why won't so many of you allow
- 22:09Speaker 1: him to be the stand-up, respectable sort of person that
- 22:13Speaker 1: we typically admire, right? Let him be that. Be honest
- 22:18Speaker 1: about it. You don't have to kick him while he's down.
- 22:20Speaker 1: You don't have to pile on. But goddamn, you do
- 22:23Speaker 1: not have to lie. Stop lying. All right, we got
- 22:33Speaker 1: ourselves another good one to wrap up.
- 22:37Speaker 2: These have been great playoffs.
- 22:39Speaker 1: The NFL playoffs are a little hit or miss in
- 22:41Speaker 1: terms of what it is that you're actually going to get.
- 22:45Speaker 1: These have been really good so far, even though I
- 22:47Speaker 1: don't think any of the teams are really good. These, however,
- 22:51Speaker 1: have been really good. And look, the finish of that game,
- 22:56Speaker 1: this can't be the Caleb Williams experience for like.
- 22:59Speaker 2: 15 years because people are going to have heart attacks, right?
- 23:01Speaker 5: Correct.
- 23:02Speaker 1: It can be what.
- 23:03Speaker 2: This is while he is young.
- 23:05Speaker 1: And it starts off a little slow.
- 23:07Speaker 2: You don't know what's going on.
- 23:08Speaker 1: He was, there's another game of like kind of sort
- 23:11Speaker 1: of 50% completion, right? Like right around in that zone,
- 23:16Speaker 1: three interceptions. Obviously that's bad news.
- 23:19Speaker 3: This is terrible. Mrs. Easy layups down the stretch.
- 23:23Speaker 1: Yes. But, and I don't think we need to walk
- 23:26Speaker 1: through the entire game. That touchdown pass is, I can't
- 23:31Speaker 1: believe that was real.
- 23:35Speaker 3: Can I be a prisoner for a moment for a second?
- 23:37Speaker 1: Feel free.
- 23:37Speaker 3: That might be the best throw I've ever seen. It's
- 23:39Speaker 3: up there.
- 23:40Speaker 1: I mean, if you do the math on it, right,
- 23:44Speaker 1: the circumstances, and I mean the macro circumstances of the game,
- 23:49Speaker 1: fourth in the season, right?
- 23:51Speaker 3: Right.
- 23:51Speaker 2: Throw in the weather as part of it.
- 23:54Speaker 1: Throw in the fact that all the Rams, Merlin Olsen,
- 23:58Speaker 1: Deacon Jones, they was both.
- 23:59Speaker 2: Back there chasing him around.
- 24:01Speaker 1: And it's not that he just like, or maybe it
- 24:03Speaker 1: was just the old Hail Mary. He seemed to put
- 24:06Speaker 1: that on the dot.
- 24:08Speaker 3: He's going backwards from the 41. His back foot's on
- 24:13Speaker 3: the 41.
- 24:13Speaker 1: It was the 41?
- 24:15Speaker 3: Yes. And he's leaning backwards and throws him to the
- 24:18Speaker 3: back corner of the end zone.
- 24:20Speaker 2: On the dot.
- 24:21Speaker 3: On the dot.
- 24:22Speaker 2: On the dot.
- 24:24Speaker 3: It looked like the video game settings were too easy.
- 24:26Speaker 1: Well, it looked like he was going to hear about
- 24:30Speaker 1: this all offseason.
- 24:32Speaker 3: Yes.
- 24:32Speaker 1: Like the set of circumstances that led to that happening
- 24:37Speaker 1: is insane. Correct.
- 24:39Speaker 2: You did something wrong.
- 24:41Speaker 1: To get us to this place.
- 24:43Speaker 2: But then to be able to say. Nah it's cool.
- 24:46Speaker 2: And then make the throw. The catch is there.
- 24:49Speaker 3: And he's been doing this. I don't know if you
- 24:50Speaker 3: read Seth Wickersham's book. But Cale Williams is very heavily
- 24:54Speaker 3: featured in that. And this goes back to his high
- 24:57Speaker 3: school days. In Maryland. Is like. They get down 28-0.
- 25:01Speaker 3: They win 43-42.
- 25:04Speaker 1: Well, did you watch his college coming out party in 2021,
- 25:07Speaker 1: the Texas-Oklahoma game?
- 25:09Speaker 3: Yes. Spencer Rattler.
- 25:11Speaker 1: Spencer Rattler.
- 25:12Speaker 2: And then just next thing you know, it's.
- 25:14Speaker 3: Like, who is this? And now it's the same season
- 25:17Speaker 3: where he's pulling the ball from the running back to
- 25:19Speaker 3: convert fourth downs.
- 25:20Speaker 2: Yeah, it was nuts.
- 25:21Speaker 1: It was also him firmly believing that he was the
- 25:25Speaker 1: best player in the country while on the oak as
- 25:29Speaker 1: a true freshman.
- 25:30Speaker 2: And having a case.
- 25:33Speaker 4: Yes. Right?
- 25:34Speaker 1: But the NFL, I mean, he has not been the
- 25:38Speaker 1: best quarterback of his draft class.
- 25:41Speaker 2: His first year, I think we would agree, he was third.
- 25:44Speaker 3: Right.
- 25:45Speaker 2: Right behind Jayden Daniels and Drake Mayne.
- 25:48Speaker 3: And this year he was second.
- 25:50Speaker 2: Yeah, this year he was second. Daniels was largely hurt.
- 25:55Speaker 1: But he's one of these things where, He's one of
- 25:58Speaker 1: these cases where he's been a great fourth quarter quarterback,
- 26:00Speaker 1: but I want a great third quarter quarterback. I think
- 26:03Speaker 1: we've talked about this on the show. I want somebody
- 26:05Speaker 1: who just hands it off in the fourth quarter. This
- 26:07Speaker 1: motherfucker got to get out here and make magic happen
- 26:09Speaker 1: every single time.
- 26:10Speaker 3: It's like one of the great analytics movements was, you
- 26:13Speaker 3: know what's better than third down conversions?
- 26:16Speaker 1: Yeah yeah yeah i mean it's a big thing man
- 26:18Speaker 1: it's a big thing and he just drops back and
- 26:21Speaker 1: it spreads out and then he's just kind of like
- 26:23Speaker 1: okay we'll figure this out in large part because i
- 26:25Speaker 1: cannot believe that somebody his size has that arm right
- 26:30Speaker 1: somebody coming in at around six one and a half
- 26:32Speaker 1: six two right although i guess he's like park has
- 26:35Speaker 1: talked about this last week right like he is built
- 26:38Speaker 1: like a house like he's got it but do you
- 26:43Speaker 1: think dan campbell would have gone for two Under those circumstances.
- 26:46Speaker 1: And I ask that because Big Brain Ben is like
- 26:49Speaker 1: clearly descended from that go for fourth down school of Campbell.
- 26:54Speaker 2: And I was thinking to myself, if America's team, the.
- 26:58Speaker 1: Detroit Lions, were in that circumstance, would I want them
- 27:02Speaker 1: to go for two?
- 27:03Speaker 2: And I think I reached the point where.
- 27:04Speaker 1: I say yes. A big part of why I say
- 27:07Speaker 1: yes is I'm ready to go home. Like I'm not,
- 27:10Speaker 1: over time, overrated. Not really that big a fan of
- 27:13Speaker 1: the whole cuss up. If we can get out of
- 27:15Speaker 1: here right now, let's go ahead and get out of here.
- 27:18Speaker 1: But the problem, Ryan, I think is what we were
- 27:20Speaker 1: just talking about. It's one thing for Williams to do
- 27:22Speaker 1: this with a little more space to operate, but a
- 27:24Speaker 1: guy that has been good to miss some layups, do
- 27:27Speaker 1: you want to put it in his hands in that
- 27:29Speaker 1: condensed space?
- 27:30Speaker 3: Right.
- 27:30Speaker 1: Like Ben Johnson has demonstrated himself to be a lot
- 27:33Speaker 1: of things.
- 27:34Speaker 2: He ain't scared.
- 27:35Speaker 3: Correct.
- 27:36Speaker 1: And he decided that we needed to go ahead and
- 27:38Speaker 1: kick and play this out. I think if you made.
- 27:41Speaker 3: A normal, like a normal fourth down play, like if
- 27:44Speaker 3: you were, but you forget how fast it is. Like, oh,
- 27:50Speaker 3: we just threw the, we threw the greatest pass ever.
- 27:52Speaker 3: And now we got to get an operation in, in
- 27:55Speaker 3: 40 seconds. All right.
- 27:56Speaker 1: So let's try this. Yeah. Okay. I don't know the
- 28:03Speaker 1: best word to use under these circumstances, but if I
- 28:08Speaker 1: were one of these people listening to this show, I
- 28:11Speaker 1: am going to use the word that they would use
- 28:15Speaker 1: even though they are speaking to a concept that I
- 28:19Speaker 1: don't believe exists.
- 28:21Speaker 3: Oh, okay.
- 28:22Speaker 1: Okay.
- 28:23Speaker 3: I was curious what word you're using now.
- 28:26Speaker 1: So.
- 28:27Speaker 3: About the thing they just got a bunch of?
- 28:29Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 28:29Speaker 1: There are many people who.
- 28:30Speaker 3: And now they can't take code with them.
- 28:31Speaker 1: There are many people who believe that in that moment
- 28:34Speaker 1: that they would have something that they would refer to
- 28:36Speaker 1: as momentum. Under those circumstances, right? That you have just
- 28:39Speaker 1: hit them with a swift kick in the gonads. And
- 28:44Speaker 1: now maybe we just hurry up and we line up
- 28:47Speaker 1: and they won't have it. Now, what it is more
- 28:51Speaker 1: likely to be, your guys are riding some confidence right now.
- 28:54Speaker 1: And you're thinking that their guys might be a little
- 28:56Speaker 1: bit dazed, right? When they're a little bit wobbly. You
- 28:59Speaker 1: notice nobody ever calls them momentum in boxing?
- 29:01Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 29:02Speaker 1: Okay. Think of it like boxing, right? They're a little
- 29:05Speaker 1: wobbly over there, right? You put them down, they getting
- 29:08Speaker 1: back up. You could go right in on a straight
- 29:10Speaker 1: line and give it to them. Or you could say, nope,
- 29:14Speaker 1: let's dance a little bit more.
- 29:16Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 29:18Speaker 1: And maybe that was the time to just come in
- 29:21Speaker 1: there and hit them with the hammer. Maybe that was it.
- 29:24Speaker 1: But it could go either way, right? In the end,
- 29:28Speaker 1: the guy that we're giving all this credit to, went
- 29:30Speaker 1: out there and threw a pick. Now, that was the one,
- 29:33Speaker 1: like going to a DJ Moore where it's a question
- 29:35Speaker 1: to ask whether or not the quarterback in the receiver on.
- 29:38Speaker 3: The same page yeah it didn't it didn't.
- 29:40Speaker 1: Look like they were and by the way if that's
- 29:42Speaker 1: the case that's kind of sort of quarterback thing too
- 29:46Speaker 1: yeah right like it's your job to get everybody on
- 29:48Speaker 1: the same program however it happens to go but the
- 29:51Speaker 1: other side the mv the presumptive mvp by the way
- 29:55Speaker 1: both presumptive mvp guys we'll talk about the other one
- 29:59Speaker 1: you know but Didn't play that well. No.
- 30:02Speaker 3: Right?
- 30:02Speaker 2: Stafford did not complete 50% of his passes.
- 30:05Speaker 1: And as I say about Stafford all the time, he's
- 30:08Speaker 1: going to give you a chance. And he gave, there
- 30:11Speaker 1: were chances to get the ball back around. There were
- 30:13Speaker 1: two fumbles. There were also at least one or two
- 30:16Speaker 1: of those. Where it's like, oh, you guys could have
- 30:19Speaker 1: picked that off. I imagine, though, it's really hard to
- 30:21Speaker 1: intercept Matthew Stafford if you don't see it coming. I
- 30:25Speaker 1: think some of that is also with Josh Allen, who
- 30:26Speaker 1: will always give you a chance. They talk about all
- 30:28Speaker 1: them games in a row. Josh Allen hadn't had a
- 30:29Speaker 1: turnover before he got them all in one game. I'm like,
- 30:32Speaker 1: I don't see how.
- 30:33Speaker 3: That feels like a result rather than process.
- 30:37Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 30:38Speaker 1: But here's the thing about it. I'm going to run
- 30:40Speaker 1: this by you. Me and my brother talk about this.
- 30:42Speaker 1: My brother's got a buddy, E. Richardson. Eric Richardson played
- 30:45Speaker 1: basketball at Alabama during the Wimp Sanderson days. Buck Johnson,
- 30:50Speaker 1: Bobby Lee Hart, all those guys, right? And my brother
- 30:53Speaker 1: asked him about magic. Because, you know, he had played
- 30:56Speaker 1: pick up with magic, you know, stuff like that. And
- 30:59Speaker 1: how it was that nobody... ever took Magic's dribble. Magic 6'9.
- 31:05Speaker 1: Magic ain't have no boom, boom, boom, low cross game
- 31:08Speaker 1: or whatever. No, Magic is dribbling that ball high.
- 31:11Speaker 3: Like to his eyes.
- 31:12Speaker 1: Yes. How did nobody ever take the ball away from Magic?
- 31:15Speaker 1: And he told him, Magic dribbling that ball hard as hell.
- 31:20Speaker 3: Right?
- 31:20Speaker 2: Like Magic, bow, bow.
- 31:21Speaker 1: Can you imagine how hard Magic Johnson, like it's one
- 31:25Speaker 1: of those things you just don't think about.
- 31:26Speaker 3: Until someone points it out, yeah.
- 31:28Speaker 2: Case in point.
- 31:29Speaker 1: It's not exactly the same, but somewhat similar. I've told
- 31:31Speaker 1: you guys before, I went to Iceland in 2024. I
- 31:35Speaker 1: went snowmobiling on a glacier. Ryan, if I have not
- 31:38Speaker 1: sent you the pictures of it, I will.
- 31:40Speaker 3: You have not.
- 31:40Speaker 1: It was a really incredible experience, right? But fell off
- 31:45Speaker 1: the snowmobile a couple of times. To this day, dog.
- 31:48Speaker 1: To this day, it's in my shoulder. But that summer, okay,
- 31:52Speaker 1: that trip was in February, just so we're clear. So
- 31:55Speaker 1: late May, I start coming back around, right? I'm in Atlanta.
- 32:00Speaker 1: I'm at Turner. We're doing the Altcast for the Western
- 32:04Speaker 1: Conference Finals. And I meet Brendan Haywood. First time I'd
- 32:07Speaker 1: seen Brendan Haywood. Brendan Haywood, for those of you who
- 32:09Speaker 1: don't know, seven feet tall, played the center in North Carolina,
- 32:12Speaker 1: played in the NBA for a very long time. Brendan Haywood,
- 32:15Speaker 1: I don't know if he was happy to... meet me
- 32:17Speaker 1: or whatever, but he gave me a level of dap
- 32:21Speaker 1: that set my shit back like three months.
- 32:24Speaker 3: You got the hard dribble to your hand?
- 32:26Speaker 1: Oh, my God. Straight up and down. It was like, oh, man.
- 32:29Speaker 1: And it wasn't like the I shook Adrian Peters' hand situation.
- 32:33Speaker 6: He dared to pop my arm out of joint just
- 32:36Speaker 6: by showing love, right? Now, with Magic Johnson, like, you
- 32:40Speaker 6: try to stick your hand in there and take the
- 32:42Speaker 6: ball for Magic.
- 32:44Speaker 1: Walk out of that bad boy.
- 32:45Speaker 2: Like when you see somebody's finger get popped out of joint.
- 32:48Speaker 2: Except it's your shoulder.
- 32:49Speaker 1: And maybe that's what happens when you don't realize that
- 32:52Speaker 1: that Matthew Stafford pass is coming for you.
- 32:55Speaker 2: And you just can't get a hold. Like, yo, man,
- 32:57Speaker 2: he burnt me. Like that thing was spinning.
- 33:00Speaker 1: Like you might be able to.
- 33:00Speaker 2: Hear that joint in the air.
- 33:04Speaker 1: That's the only way that I figured the Cats ain't
- 33:05Speaker 1: picking these passes off.
- 33:06Speaker 3: Speaking of, you know, Stafford, a lot of pressure. when
- 33:11Speaker 3: the four quarterbacks left in the tournament are Sam Darnold.
- 33:14Speaker 1: Yes.
- 33:15Speaker 3: Jared Stidham. Yes. And, you know, someone who, you know,
- 33:20Speaker 3: you're 15 years older than. Yes. Yes.
- 33:23Speaker 1: Now this is, I'm going to just say this right now.
- 33:28Speaker 1: The Rams don't win the Superbowl. Ain't no, we can't
- 33:31Speaker 1: shut this hall of fame thing up. If they don't win,
- 33:36Speaker 1: he didn't do Josh Allen. Like Josh Allen had to,
- 33:41Speaker 1: I mean, right. He was dealing with that. Now it's
- 33:45Speaker 1: the least scrutinized number one overall pick in the history
- 33:49Speaker 1: of number one overall pick quarterbacks. It's him.
- 33:52Speaker 2: This is your time.
- 33:53Speaker 1: You have the best two receivers, one, two in the
- 33:57Speaker 1: league where one guy led the league in catches in.
- 33:59Speaker 2: Yards and the other one led the league in touchdowns.
- 34:03Speaker 3: And again, Talk about surefire Hall of Famers.
- 34:07Speaker 1: Devontae Adams? Yes. Yeah, it's one of those that you
- 34:10Speaker 1: didn't really think about and then it happened. Right. Right? Like,
- 34:14Speaker 1: he is... Because, you know, Antonio Brown's Hall of Fame
- 34:18Speaker 1: case is about to start. And that's going to be.
- 34:21Speaker 3: That's going to be a fun one.
- 34:22Speaker 1: That's going to be a fun one. The Devontae Adams case...
- 34:24Speaker 1: And by the way, it's a no-brainer on just football stuff.
- 34:28Speaker 1: It's just a matter of whether they decide they don't
- 34:30Speaker 1: want to let him in. But the Devontae Adams case
- 34:32Speaker 1: is very, very similar.
- 34:34Speaker 3: Yes.
- 34:34Speaker 1: Like when you get in there and look at it,
- 34:36Speaker 1: I think the Devontae Adams case is maybe a little
- 34:37Speaker 1: more similar than Julio Jones, who I think will get in.
- 34:40Speaker 1: But you and I have talked about this and maybe
- 34:42Speaker 1: we might want to, this is actually a fun episode.
- 34:45Speaker 1: I'll talk about this in front of people that we
- 34:46Speaker 1: may be able to have of Super Bowl week, which
- 34:49Speaker 1: is going through that Hall of Fame ballot.
- 34:50Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 34:51Speaker 1: Like it lets you know, it's some dudes that ain't.
- 34:54Speaker 2: Never getting in.
- 34:55Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 34:55Speaker 2: That you've been trying to, not you, but you know,
- 34:57Speaker 2: been trying to put in forever.
- 34:59Speaker 1: Yes. I'm talking about Jason Witten. But anyway, This will
- 35:04Speaker 1: come up with Stafford also, by the way. But they,
- 35:11Speaker 1: I think most of us would agree, and I guess
- 35:14Speaker 1: you could make a case for Peyton maybe, but I
- 35:15Speaker 1: think McVay's the best coach that we've got left in this.
- 35:19Speaker 2: I mean, we've got a pretty good coaching situation.
- 35:21Speaker 1: Right. You know, with all these guys.
- 35:23Speaker 3: Especially two offense, two defense.
- 35:24Speaker 4: Yes.
- 35:25Speaker 3: Yes.
- 35:25Speaker 1: Like, I think we got a pretty good, you know,
- 35:27Speaker 1: setup there, but we're going to see what happens. I mean, look,
- 35:32Speaker 1: it's going to be third time's the charm over there
- 35:34Speaker 1: in the NFC, right? We're going to, we're going to
- 35:36Speaker 1: get a look at what goes on over there, but
- 35:39Speaker 1: the future of the bears is going to be very
- 35:42Speaker 1: interesting with exactly how you deal with what the future
- 35:45Speaker 1: of Caleb Williams should be. And what is next year
- 35:50Speaker 1: going to look like with him? Because we're all now
- 35:54Speaker 1: going to expect a leap. And I think that he
- 35:56Speaker 1: made a leap this year. Cause I mean, I think
- 35:59Speaker 1: going from 60 something sacks to 20 something sacks that
- 36:03Speaker 1: by itself, I.
- 36:04Speaker 3: Don't want to compare it to some other Chicago athlete
- 36:07Speaker 3: who had a down first year and then had a
- 36:09Speaker 3: great first, you know, great first moment in the, uh,
- 36:12Speaker 3: in the playoffs season where people start comparing them to God.
- 36:17Speaker 2: But you know, yeah, but, um, it's been, it's.
- 36:21Speaker 3: Been a long time. That, that, that hole is there
- 36:23Speaker 3: for Chicago fans.
- 36:24Speaker 1: Yeah. I will just say this though. And I think
- 36:26Speaker 1: this is important. Um, you got to get over seven
- 36:31Speaker 1: yards of completion.
- 36:32Speaker 4: Yes.
- 36:32Speaker 2: Like you can throw me all the advanced statistics, all
- 36:34Speaker 2: you want or whatever this. And I think that if.
- 36:37Speaker 3: You got to complete more than 60% of your past.
- 36:40Speaker 2: And that's what it comes down to is that right?
- 36:42Speaker 1: Like, I think efficiency is overrated in the way that
- 36:45Speaker 1: we view football, but I also do think it is important.
- 36:49Speaker 1: I think the ability to make big plays is more important.
- 36:52Speaker 1: Like I'd rather have somewhat of the Caleb Williams archetype
- 36:55Speaker 1: than the Alex Smith archetype.
- 36:57Speaker 3: Right.
- 36:57Speaker 1: Right. But that's how you become Drew Brees.
- 37:02Speaker 3: Yes.
- 37:02Speaker 1: Drew Brees is a different animal.
- 37:07Speaker 2: There's been one of those.
- 37:08Speaker 1: If your thing is, I think he's the next Drew Brees,
- 37:10Speaker 1: move on to somebody else. You're just asking for too much.
- 37:14Speaker 1: But they need, they're going to need him to make
- 37:16Speaker 1: a jump. And the big part of why is it
- 37:18Speaker 1: seems very clear to me, no matter what the system
- 37:20Speaker 1: is that you build around him, the system is going
- 37:22Speaker 1: to be Caleb Williams, right?
- 37:24Speaker 2: Like that, that's, that's what this looks like.
- 37:25Speaker 1: The system is going to be, our guy can do
- 37:27Speaker 1: unreal things and we're going to put him in a
- 37:29Speaker 1: position to do unreal things. And that's what it got.
- 37:32Speaker 1: That's what happened in the end. But Hey man, that's a,
- 37:36Speaker 1: that's a, that's a high, low life, right? That's a,
- 37:39Speaker 1: that's an up and down life. That's an EKG life.
- 37:42Speaker 1: But it made for a season that I think these
- 37:45Speaker 1: Bears fans will remember up until next year when.
- 37:48Speaker 2: They're going to want to go to the Super Bowl.

- 40:31Speaker 3: All right, Bo, a couple other games from the weekend.
- 40:34Speaker 3: Saturday night, Seahawks blow the doors off of the 49ers, 41-6.
- 40:41Speaker 3: Magic runs out for Brock Purdy and Kyle Shanahan. What
- 40:44Speaker 3: was your biggest takeaway from this game?
- 40:46Speaker 1: Hey guys. Um, I understand the 49ers are really low
- 40:52Speaker 1: on bodies, right? I get that, but God bless anybody
- 40:57Speaker 1: that has to try to score points against, um, Seattle.
- 41:03Speaker 1: Like that's the, you want to score some points against Seattle.
- 41:06Speaker 1: You're going to need to intercept Sam Darnold and take
- 41:09Speaker 1: him back to the castle. That's what it's going to take.
- 41:13Speaker 1: And it, it feels like they'd be hitting hard, too. Like,
- 41:16Speaker 1: I mean, it was like San Francisco.
- 41:17Speaker 3: Oh, they're nasty. Yeah, yeah.
- 41:19Speaker 1: Like, I thought San Francisco's a great story this year,
- 41:21Speaker 1: and they gave it everything they had.
- 41:23Speaker 2: I don't know what team you could have put into
- 41:25Speaker 2: that situation.
- 41:26Speaker 1: Like, that's the first time in how many years they
- 41:28Speaker 1: had fans in that loud-ass stadium. They were actually able
- 41:31Speaker 1: to run the ball, which is something they had not
- 41:33Speaker 1: been able to do. You know, like, all of those things.
- 41:36Speaker 1: But it didn't matter what Sam Darnold was in that game.
- 41:39Speaker 3: Right, with a torn oblique. Right.
- 41:42Speaker 2: Now, I mean, look, that's a trick bag, right?
- 41:44Speaker 1: But can you get to the Super Bowl without it
- 41:47Speaker 1: mattering what your quarterback does?
- 41:50Speaker 2: I've seen it happen before.
- 41:53Speaker 3: Once.
- 41:54Speaker 1: And that was maybe the greatest defense that I've ever seen.
- 41:57Speaker 1: And that was in the year 2000.
- 41:59Speaker 3: Right.
- 41:59Speaker 1: Where the other team's quarterback in the Super Bowl was
- 42:02Speaker 1: Kerry Collins.
- 42:04Speaker 2: I don't know, guys.
- 42:05Speaker 3: I don't know. All right, so let's move on to
- 42:08Speaker 3: the AFC. The Patriots beat the Texans. CJ Stroud struggled mightily,
- 42:13Speaker 3: completing 20 of his 47 passes, four first-half interceptions. Bo,
- 42:20Speaker 3: what was your take? Bo, you were tweeting about the
- 42:22Speaker 3: Peter man in this game.
- 42:23Speaker 1: Yo, okay, so look, they lost that game to the Steelers,
- 42:27Speaker 1: and you and I were both struck at how bad
- 42:28Speaker 1: he looked.
- 42:29Speaker 3: Yes, I mean, that game was 7-6 going into the
- 42:31Speaker 3: fourth quarter.
- 42:31Speaker 1: And it's not just how bad he looked. It was
- 42:34Speaker 1: written all over his face, right? Like, he was shook
- 42:39Speaker 1: about that. But they managed to get it done because
- 42:41Speaker 1: the Texans, boy, they got some bullies over there on
- 42:44Speaker 1: the other side of this. He threw four interceptions in
- 42:47Speaker 1: the first half against the Patriots, and I was like,
- 42:50Speaker 1: he looked like the Peter Band. All he had to
- 42:53Speaker 1: do was come out the next half and throw one more.
- 42:56Speaker 1: We was taught by Davis Mills. You got to get
- 42:59Speaker 1: him off the yoke. And that was not simply because
- 43:02Speaker 1: Stroud was playing poorly. It's because it was written all
- 43:06Speaker 1: over his face. It was clear that he was totally
- 43:09Speaker 1: consumed by this game, by this moment. I don't know
- 43:12Speaker 1: what's going on. He was one of the best rookie
- 43:14Speaker 1: quarterbacks that we have ever seen. Apparently it's been cheeks
- 43:19Speaker 1: ever since then. And now look after year three, that's
- 43:21Speaker 1: when teams start talking about signing these extensions.
- 43:24Speaker 3: Okay.
- 43:25Speaker 1: He's got Mulgetta representing him. He's still got the leverage
- 43:28Speaker 1: because it's going to be hard to go find another quarterback.
- 43:31Speaker 1: But Texas can't break the bank on this, man. If
- 43:34Speaker 1: this is what it's been looking like, and it appears
- 43:37Speaker 1: that this is what it's been looking like, they have age.
- 43:41Speaker 1: I could not believe how bad he looks. Let me
- 43:42Speaker 1: tell you who didn't look good in that game. Drake May.
- 43:45Speaker 1: All right.
- 43:46Speaker 2: The Texans were in this game into the fourth quarter.
- 43:53Speaker 1: But the thought was the Texans are going to need
- 43:55Speaker 1: to turn around an interception or a fumble or something
- 43:58Speaker 1: like that to get it done. But it was on
- 44:00Speaker 1: the board because of how May was playing and how
- 44:02Speaker 1: that defense was playing. What was it? Four minutes left.
- 44:04Speaker 1: The Texans are down by 12, and they punted the ball.
- 44:07Speaker 1: And I've seen people take that.
- 44:08Speaker 3: One timeout left.
- 44:09Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 44:09Speaker 2: People take that as D'Amico gave up on the game. No, sir.
- 44:12Speaker 1: I think D'Amico concluded they had a better chance of
- 44:14Speaker 1: scoring a touchdown on defense than they did scoring a
- 44:18Speaker 1: touchdown on offense. Like, that's... where they, I am shocked
- 44:26Speaker 1: by how bad their quarterback was in that game. I
- 44:32Speaker 1: can't think of a time it's been a playoff game
- 44:34Speaker 1: and people have really been like, yo, y'all need to
- 44:35Speaker 1: go to the bench.
- 44:37Speaker 3: The bench for Davis Mills.
- 44:38Speaker 1: For Davis Mills. And like, you know, we talk a
- 44:41Speaker 1: lot about quarterbacks and blackups, but we was asking for
- 44:47Speaker 1: Davis Mills too. And I'm generally a little skeptical of
- 44:51Speaker 1: last name, last name, cats. You know what I'm saying? Like,
- 44:54Speaker 1: you need to go gain you 20 pounds and play
- 44:56Speaker 1: tight end. Then we might throw you the ball. Josh Allen,
- 44:59Speaker 1: he got a whole team full of last name, last name, cats.
- 45:02Speaker 1: What was it?
- 45:03Speaker 2: Dawson Knox.
- 45:04Speaker 3: Dalton Kincaid.
- 45:05Speaker 1: Dalton Kincaid. Oh, boy.
- 45:07Speaker 2: Look at that seal sucker suit.
- 45:09Speaker 1: You know?
- 45:09Speaker 2: Like, it's all right there.
- 45:14Speaker 4: But.
- 45:16Speaker 1: I don't know what to say about the Patriots either
- 45:18Speaker 1: because I don't think they played well. They played against
- 45:21Speaker 1: one of the worst quarterbacking performances that I have ever
- 45:24Speaker 1: seen at that level. But he's like, okay, I'm not
- 45:28Speaker 1: saying he's like Jalen Hurts because I think Jalen Hurts
- 45:30Speaker 1: is better than him, it seems.
- 45:33Speaker 3: Jalen Hurts doesn't come out there and doesn't look shook.
- 45:36Speaker 1: No, no, but the same way that we have all
- 45:38Speaker 1: our criticisms about Jalen Hurts and then you say, comma,
- 45:40Speaker 1: but he outplayed Patrick Mahomes twice in the Super Bowl.
- 45:44Speaker 1: Texans have won a playoff game three straight years with
- 45:46Speaker 1: this guy. Three straight years. But they have a, they
- 45:52Speaker 1: got to figure something out and they got to figure
- 45:53Speaker 1: it out because they fired the offensive coordinator last year
- 45:55Speaker 1: because they thought it was his fault. What if it wasn't?
- 46:00Speaker 3: All right, Bo, today is Martin Luther King Day, 40th
- 46:04Speaker 3: anniversary of America recognizing this holiday. You wanted to give
- 46:08Speaker 3: some thoughts about Martin Luther King.
- 46:10Speaker 1: All right, so I want to say one thing right
- 46:11Speaker 1: fast about the holiday. And I think that This is important.
- 46:16Speaker 1: I told this story here before. My buddy, Joel. See,
- 46:22Speaker 1: my buddy, Joel. Hear that? Anyway, we were both at
- 46:28Speaker 1: the National Association of Black Journalists annual convention in 2005
- 46:33Speaker 1: in Atlanta. And Jesse Jackson was there. And I'll always
- 46:37Speaker 1: remember it because Jesse Jackson was doing something that was
- 46:40Speaker 1: very much, I feel like, on brand for a man
- 46:43Speaker 1: of Jesse Jackson's age and stature at that time. I
- 46:46Speaker 1: saw him talking on his cell phone on a hands-free kit,
- 46:49Speaker 1: and the hands-free kit, the one from back in the
- 46:52Speaker 1: day where you put the earpiece in and then the
- 46:53Speaker 1: cord went down and plugged into the phone, right? Well,
- 46:56Speaker 1: if you ain't know nobody had it in, you thought
- 46:57Speaker 1: they was talking to theyself. Anyway, he was there because
- 47:02Speaker 1: the Voting Rights Act was up for renewal and he
- 47:06Speaker 1: wanted to make sure that there was, um, you know,
- 47:11Speaker 1: an understanding of what was going on and awareness of
- 47:13Speaker 1: the issue. And, you know, this is 2005, you know,
- 47:16Speaker 1: Jesse isn't quite as relevant as he was then. And
- 47:19Speaker 1: it felt, um, to a degree, like, you know, it
- 47:23Speaker 1: felt a little alarmist. I think I've seen Joel use
- 47:25Speaker 1: that word to describe it. It felt a little bit alarmist.
- 47:28Speaker 1: And when the vote came up for the voting rights
- 47:32Speaker 1: act that time, I want to say it passed unanimously
- 47:37Speaker 1: through the Senate. As you guys know, it ain't no
- 47:41Speaker 1: Voting Rights Act no more. You know, at least not
- 47:43Speaker 1: in any way that actually factually matters. I had thought
- 47:49Speaker 1: that that was a settled matter. Clearly, it was not.
- 47:59Speaker 1: Keep that in mind with this holiday. It ain't got
- 48:02Speaker 1: to be one forever. you know, they just got that
- 48:04Speaker 1: Juneteenth one there. Good luck keeping that one on the books.
- 48:07Speaker 1: Like none of this is, none of this is obligatory.
- 48:10Speaker 1: None of this is required. Don't lose sight of that.
- 48:14Speaker 1: Cause you may have to, we might have to snap
- 48:16Speaker 1: into action to keep it if it comes down to it. Um,
- 48:20Speaker 1: now King himself, I used to annually do like more
- 48:25Speaker 1: of a thing and I would pick a passage from
- 48:29Speaker 1: something that King had written and to speak on it. And,
- 48:32Speaker 1: you know, the biggest thing for me with King always,
- 48:34Speaker 1: and I've talked about this many times, is I believe
- 48:38Speaker 1: that Martin Luther King is the finest man that this
- 48:40Speaker 1: country has produced. A man good in such a way
- 48:44Speaker 1: that I don't think that this country deserved him in
- 48:46Speaker 1: a number of ways. And the biggest thing that I
- 48:49Speaker 1: say about King that I think is very important and
- 48:51Speaker 1: speaks to, you know, what he is or was is
- 48:54Speaker 1: that no one has ever spoken with greater moral clarity.
- 48:59Speaker 1: And my greatest frustration with people who misappropriate his words or,
- 49:05Speaker 1: you know, as this day goes on and people go
- 49:07Speaker 1: and find the most benign quotes of his that they
- 49:10Speaker 1: possibly can to put them out there, you know, um,
- 49:13Speaker 1: you know, don't worry, be happy. Martin Luther King, right.
- 49:16Speaker 1: You know, that kind of stuff. Um, You have to
- 49:20Speaker 1: do it on purpose.
- 49:22Speaker 2: It's the only way. You can't accidentally get it wrong.
- 49:26Speaker 1: It's not possible. You know? What was right and what
- 49:32Speaker 1: was not, it wasn't just like expressed in slogan. It
- 49:36Speaker 1: was always broken down. Because the thing about King that
- 49:38Speaker 1: we also don't talk nearly enough about is he's really, really,
- 49:42Speaker 1: really smart, right? The logic on his stuff, like if
- 49:48Speaker 1: you were doing it with arrows, like A implies B,
- 49:51Speaker 1: B implies C, all that stuff, the lines are always
- 49:54Speaker 1: so clear. There's so little noise that surrounds it at
- 49:59Speaker 1: every turn, right? It's so clear.
- 50:02Speaker 2: It's always there.
- 50:03Speaker 3: It's so resonant.
- 50:06Speaker 1: And it makes you stop and realize, and this is
- 50:08Speaker 1: part of why King was so effective.
- 50:11Speaker 2: Do you realize how bad of.
- 50:13Speaker 1: A person you had to be to disagree with the
- 50:16Speaker 1: things that he was talking about? Like how fundamentally rotten
- 50:20Speaker 1: that you had to be? That's the only reason that
- 50:24Speaker 1: this holiday ever got passed or anything else is that
- 50:29Speaker 1: it's like, ain't no leak in that ship, man. It's
- 50:34Speaker 1: not there.
- 50:36Speaker 2: It's not.
- 50:37Speaker 1: And so with that in mind, I encourage you to
- 50:41Speaker 1: go find anything the King has written. Chaos, Our Community
- 50:44Speaker 1: is the one that I typically recommend that people go
- 50:46Speaker 1: to and understand, man, he at every turn was confronting
- 50:50Speaker 1: the problem of race and how we got there squarely, right?
- 50:56Speaker 1: There were no punches pulled. There were no dirty punches either,
- 51:00Speaker 1: but there were no punches pulled. He was always so
- 51:02Speaker 1: straight ahead at this. And The greatness of King, to me,
- 51:11Speaker 1: was another thing that was a settled matter. But we
- 51:18Speaker 1: know that it is not. And we're going to have
- 51:23Speaker 1: Howard Bryan on tomorrow to talk about his book that
- 51:26Speaker 1: he wrote about Jackie Robinson and Paul Robeson. And they
- 51:31Speaker 1: made Paul Robeson disappear.
- 51:35Speaker 2: Like, full on.
- 51:37Speaker 1: Disappear like he like he never happened like it didn't
- 51:40Speaker 1: like perhaps the most famous black man in the world
- 51:44Speaker 1: in the 1940s by the time he was dead in
- 51:46Speaker 1: the 1970s it's like he was never there like the
- 51:52Speaker 1: memories of these people can be made to evaporate very
- 51:55Speaker 1: quickly without a conscientious effort to keep them alive now
- 52:01Speaker 1: um something that i think is important when i make
- 52:04Speaker 1: that point is this And this is for everybody, though
- 52:07Speaker 1: I think it has a particular meaning for black people.
- 52:12Speaker 1: They can change what they teach in schools. They can
- 52:16Speaker 1: change the points that they use to decide is like
- 52:19Speaker 1: some larger form of education. They cannot change what we
- 52:22Speaker 1: teach each other. They cannot change what we preach on
- 52:26Speaker 1: our own time. They can't do it. Everything I ever
- 52:30Speaker 1: learned about black people, I learned for black people. It
- 52:33Speaker 1: was never with any sort of expectation that I was
- 52:35Speaker 1: going to learn this in school. It just wasn't it. Right.
- 52:40Speaker 2: And we have to keep.
- 52:41Speaker 1: That in mind more and more. And remember that at
- 52:45Speaker 1: some point it looks as though it is possible that
- 52:49Speaker 1: we are going to have to teach each other again
- 52:52Speaker 1: about Martin Luther King. And if we have to teach
- 52:55Speaker 1: each other about Martin Luther King, I think it becomes
- 52:58Speaker 1: imperative for a lot of us that we actually learn
- 53:02Speaker 1: about Martin Luther King. Because a lot of us depended
- 53:07Speaker 1: on other people to give us that information.
- 53:11Speaker 3: Nah, man.
- 53:11Speaker 1: Information's out there. Go out there. Get it. Be inspired.
- 53:15Speaker 1: Be blown away by what you read. But don't be
- 53:20Speaker 1: sitting around waiting. We got to do what we got
- 53:23Speaker 1: to do is what I'm saying. Let's make sure we
- 53:26Speaker 1: do it.
- 53:32Speaker 3: All right, Bo. Got some voicemails coming out.
- 53:35Speaker 1: Thank goodness for the wipe.
- 53:36Speaker 3: Thank goodness for the wipe.
- 53:38Speaker 2: A nice hard transition.
- 53:39Speaker 3: A nice hard cut.
- 53:41Speaker 1: Here's the first one. Hey, what's up, Bo? First time call,
- 53:45Speaker 1: long time listener.
- 53:46Speaker 2: Hey, man, this is Courtney Collison, Georgia.
- 53:48Speaker 5: I have a question for you, man. I know that, like,
- 53:51Speaker 5: during the 90s, man, like, Y'all's shoe game was so, like, cold.
- 53:55Speaker 1: I mean, y'all had the airbags, y'all had the cross trainers,
- 53:58Speaker 1: y'all had the kamikazes, the Sean Kemps, the Allen Nobbs,
- 54:01Speaker 1: and the Pennies.
- 54:02Speaker 4: It's like, man, all y'all's shoes were so cold.
- 54:04Speaker 5: So I just want to know, like, where did we
- 54:07Speaker 5: lose the recipe?
- 54:08Speaker 3: Like, why did the.
- 54:08Speaker 5: Shoe game not sustain itself?
- 54:11Speaker 3: Why it ain't like how it used to be where
- 54:13Speaker 3: the shoes were so cold? I appreciate it.
- 54:18Speaker 2: You know, y'all got lower standards, if I'm going to
- 54:21Speaker 2: keep it real.
- 54:22Speaker 4: Right.
- 54:23Speaker 1: Koozie Hall.
- 54:24Speaker 2: It's a generational situation.
- 54:26Speaker 3: Okay. Okay.
- 54:29Speaker 2: It's a generational situation.
- 54:32Speaker 3: You kids.
- 54:33Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, yes, yes. But this is the thing. I
- 54:37Speaker 1: think it's not just shoes. It's everything else. We now
- 54:40Speaker 1: have such a vast repertoire of past things to draw
- 54:45Speaker 1: from that you know people like and you know things
- 54:47Speaker 1: work retroactively or whatever.
- 54:48Speaker 2: But across the board.
- 54:49Speaker 1: Everybody's like, why would I come up with something new
- 54:52Speaker 1: when it's some old shit? that'll be that'll be cracking
- 54:56Speaker 1: right i think that's a gigantic part of a lot
- 54:59Speaker 1: of these things like i always say about music why
- 55:01Speaker 1: y'all still listening to rap and i mean that in
- 55:04Speaker 1: the sense of these young people should have come up
- 55:06Speaker 1: with something that blew rap off the board like there
- 55:09Speaker 1: should have been a paradigmatic shift but instead everything just
- 55:12Speaker 1: keeps drawing on what has already been here right it's
- 55:15Speaker 1: the point has been made that having everything be so
- 55:17Speaker 1: accessible just flattens all this stuff out in that regard
- 55:21Speaker 1: but you're right man like The heat that we was
- 55:24Speaker 1: wearing when I was in high school is still kicking
- 55:27Speaker 1: the ass of what they putting out for y'all to
- 55:30Speaker 1: wear right now.
- 55:32Speaker 2: That's a terrible break for you youngsters.
- 55:33Speaker 1: It really is. But you know what? If I was you,
- 55:36Speaker 1: I would be trying to get like me, too.
- 55:39Speaker 3: All right. Here's our next one. This is Cy.
- 55:42Speaker 4: First time, long time calling in from Virginia. You kind
- 55:45Speaker 4: of sparked my interest to call in when you were
- 55:48Speaker 4: talking about Austin Rivers agent Reggie. So I am the
- 55:53Speaker 4: offspring of a white Reggie. And as you can imagine,
- 55:58Speaker 4: most of my mom's friends, when she told them she
- 56:02Speaker 4: was dating a Reggie, just made the assumption that he
- 56:05Speaker 4: was a black guy. On top of it, his middle name, yes,
- 56:10Speaker 4: it is Avon. So it's Reggie, Reginald Avon. So he's
- 56:15Speaker 4: got a lot working for him there. And then on
- 56:18Speaker 4: top of that, my dad grew up. in the rural
- 56:23Speaker 4: South around integration. And he was, uh, integrated into a
- 56:28Speaker 4: school that was primarily, primarily black. So he was playing
- 56:31Speaker 4: basketball and he was the only white guy on his team.
- 56:34Speaker 3: And they would.
- 56:35Speaker 4: Go into plenty of gyms where, you know, they're facing
- 56:39Speaker 4: off against pretty much all white teams. And it always
- 56:42Speaker 4: would crack me up kind of thinking, Oh, as they're
- 56:45Speaker 4: doing the starting lineups, Oh, here comes Reginald off the,
- 56:49Speaker 4: off the bench. Um, And yeah, so that was always
- 56:53Speaker 4: a little bit amusing to think about too, that some
- 56:55Speaker 4: of the head scratching that might have been going on there. Yeah,
- 56:59Speaker 4: love the show. Thanks. Have a good one.
- 57:02Speaker 1: I just need to know, and I appreciate that call greatly,
- 57:05Speaker 1: more than you know. How do, like, what was the
- 57:08Speaker 1: tipping point before white people was like, fine, y'all got it.
- 57:12Speaker 1: Reginald is yours.
- 57:14Speaker 5: Right.
- 57:14Speaker 1: It's like, for example, the name Tyrone, Stephen Tyrone Colbert.
- 57:18Speaker 1: Did you know that?
- 57:19Speaker 3: I know that. But I mean, to be fair, I
- 57:21Speaker 3: know that because of you.
- 57:22Speaker 1: Stephen Tyrone Colbert.
- 57:25Speaker 2: At what point? Because, you know, in Ireland, they got
- 57:28Speaker 2: lots of Tyrones.
- 57:30Speaker 1: At some point over here, they was just like when
- 57:33Speaker 1: you loan somebody a shirt and they stretch it out.
- 57:37Speaker 1: Y'all got it. Like I said, I had a lot
- 57:40Speaker 1: on game theory once. I said basketball was like the
- 57:42Speaker 1: name Tyrone. After a while, white folks just said, fine,
- 57:46Speaker 1: y'all can have it. We don't even want it back
- 57:49Speaker 1: no more. For a moment, I thought I got fooled.
- 57:51Speaker 1: Somebody sent me something and said that Austin Reeves' agent
- 57:55Speaker 1: Reggie was white Reggie.
- 57:57Speaker 2: I almost fell for it. I looked it up.
- 57:58Speaker 1: Nah, he's Reggie. He's just a regular old Reggie. Bernard,
- 58:04Speaker 1: I feel like, is a name that at some point
- 58:07Speaker 1: we got, like, sometime after Bernie Sanders. You know what
- 58:13Speaker 1: I'm saying?
- 58:13Speaker 3: But he's never Bernard.
- 58:15Speaker 2: You're right. He is Bernie, right?
- 58:17Speaker 1: That is an interesting thing, though.
- 58:19Speaker 3: Brooklyn Dodgers fan, Bernie Sanders. Yeah.
- 58:22Speaker 2: That's a great point.
- 58:24Speaker 1: That says a lot about the silent generation's own.
- 58:30Speaker 2: Bernie Sanders. He's like boomers.
- 58:32Speaker 1: I hate kids.
- 58:34Speaker 3: Yeah, we had good shoes in my day. All right,
- 58:36Speaker 3: here's our last one. Speaking of white Reggie.
- 58:41Speaker 5: Hey, Bo. This is Trav from Alcoa, Tennessee, just south
- 58:45Speaker 5: of Knoxville. You know what I mean?
- 58:48Speaker 4: Okay.
- 58:49Speaker 5: I can confirm that there's three white Reggie in my
- 58:54Speaker 5: area right now. I know there are few and far between,
- 58:57Speaker 5: but I've not seen few, but there's three here. Now,
- 59:01Speaker 5: one's a transplant from Mississippi. So the one I ain't found, though,
- 59:08Speaker 5: that I've talked to with the homies is, vote, I
- 59:13Speaker 5: know a gang of Washingtons, but they ain't a pale
- 59:16Speaker 5: face among them. I've seen a million people play, Washington
- 59:20Speaker 5: play sports, not a pale face among them. So if
- 59:23Speaker 5: you ever find a white, one white dude with the
- 59:26Speaker 5: last name Washington, let me know and I'll let you know.
- 59:29Speaker 3: Have a good one, bro.
- 59:30Speaker 1: Amen.
- 59:30Speaker 5: I don't know you, but I love you, brother. Take
- 59:32Speaker 5: it easy.
- 59:34Speaker 2: I feel like I just talked to Bizarro Mike.
- 59:36Speaker 3: Yes.
- 59:38Speaker 1: To have a good one?
- 59:39Speaker 2: It's like we're talking to Mike.
- 59:41Speaker 1: I appreciate him calling. So I've heard people mention this,
- 59:44Speaker 1: that all those Washington, Jefferson, like they became presidents and
- 59:48Speaker 1: then suddenly there were no white people that had these names.
- 59:52Speaker 3: Why Washington very famously didn't have any kids?
- 59:55Speaker 2: I did not know that until you said it.
- 59:58Speaker 3: No kids.
- 59:59Speaker 2: Interesting.
- 1:00:00Speaker 1: But he's right about that. All these stalwart white people names,
- 1:00:03Speaker 1: they ain't none of them left.
- 1:00:04Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 1:00:05Speaker 1: But we out here.
- 1:00:06Speaker 2: We out here.
- 1:00:07Speaker 1: I love also that like word has drifted through the
- 1:00:11Speaker 1: town of the presence of the white Reggie's.
- 1:00:14Speaker 3: Including the transplant Reggie.
- 1:00:16Speaker 1: Right, right. Like Bigfoot.
- 1:00:17Speaker 3: Yes.
- 1:00:18Speaker 1: Like, yo, I'll say just so you know, if you
- 1:00:21Speaker 1: hear about, no, no, no, steal us.
- 1:00:24Speaker 2: We're still good.
- 1:00:26Speaker 1: Still, there has not been some sort of giant change.
- 1:00:29Speaker 1: But yes, this was the white Reggie episode of this show.
- 1:00:33Speaker 1: And I ain't going to lie. I appreciate it.
- 1:00:35Speaker 3: Happy Martin Luther King day.
- 1:00:36Speaker 2: Yes, yes, yes.
- 1:00:38Speaker 1: We're bringing the world together. Hey, look, I'm just glad
- 1:00:40Speaker 1: to be reminded that I still got that demo in
- 1:00:44Speaker 1: the audience. You know what I'm saying? Like when I
- 1:00:45Speaker 1: was in North Carolina, I heard from him all the time.
- 1:00:47Speaker 1: We had to follow, you know, call. I don't hear
- 1:00:50Speaker 1: from him as much these days, man. So shout out
- 1:00:52Speaker 1: to all y'all for hollering at your boy. But ladies
- 1:00:53Speaker 1: and gentlemen, Thanks so much for joining us here on
