- 3:47Speaker 1: whatever is wrong, we ask that you will make it right.
- 3:50Speaker 4: Father God.
- 3:51Speaker 1: As we look at this chapter chapter for Father God,
- 3:54Speaker 1: give us an insight on the heart of man, on
- 3:59Speaker 1: the human heart. Father, How, Father God, Oh Lord, you
- 4:03Speaker 1: look at things and how we need to deal and
- 4:06Speaker 1: guard our hearts. For your word says that out of
- 4:09Speaker 1: it are the issues of life. Well, we asked that
- 4:12Speaker 1: you give us the insight, the understanding, the treasure that
- 4:17Speaker 1: is hidden in his book, so that we can apply
- 4:20Speaker 1: it to our lives and so that we are able
- 4:23Speaker 1: to teach others. We thank you Father and the mighty
- 4:27Speaker 1: name of Jesus and Gods. People said amen and amen.
- 4:34Speaker 1: All right, So let's dive in verse four and just
- 4:40Speaker 1: a little background. Jonah is a prophet that was swallowed
- 4:44Speaker 1: up by a fish. He tried to run from the
- 4:48Speaker 1: call of God. He was already a believer. He believed
- 4:53Speaker 1: in the God that created the heavens and earth and
- 4:56Speaker 1: the sea. His affected this whole entire ship, everyone on
- 5:03Speaker 1: the ship. But even though they got the glory, God
- 5:09Speaker 1: got himself got the glory because when they threw Jonah
- 5:14Speaker 1: overboard to calm the ship. They made vows to God
- 5:19Speaker 1: like they They're like, you know what, I forget all this,
- 5:22Speaker 1: I'm gonna get right knowing how God dealt with his prophet.
- 5:28Speaker 1: And so Jonah had a death wish. She did not
- 5:30Speaker 1: want to obey God. He would rather die than go
- 5:34Speaker 1: to Nineveh. Finally he was willing to go because he
- 5:38Speaker 1: was stuck in that fish. He was ready to get out.
- 5:42Speaker 1: And then he comes out preaches a message that this
- 5:47Speaker 1: nation is gonna be judged. Don't even tell him how
- 5:50Speaker 1: to get right with God. It's just you're getting judged.
- 5:54Speaker 1: And the king and everyone in this whole city humbled
- 5:58Speaker 1: themselves and repented. We saw what true repentance looks like.
- 6:06Speaker 1: And then God did not judge the nation. And so
- 6:09Speaker 1: now Jonah's upset. He's out there throwing a fit. This
- 6:14Speaker 1: is a grown man tempertentium. And let's see how God
- 6:18Speaker 1: deals with his prophet. Like I've been saying, if God
- 6:22Speaker 1: can use Jonah, he can use us. That's hope. This
- 6:27Speaker 1: book is hoped to me because I believe that it's redemption.
- 6:31Speaker 1: There's been areas in my life where I ran from
- 6:33Speaker 1: the call of God. But God has been gracious and
- 6:38Speaker 1: merciful enough and patient to allow me to come back,
- 6:45Speaker 1: telling a man has dived into it. Jonah, chapter one.
- 6:53Speaker 1: This prophet is upset because of God's mercy, but it
- 6:59Speaker 1: is pleased Jonah exceedingly, and he became angry. Jonah was
- 7:11Speaker 1: upset exceedingly and he was angry. Now, Jonah wasn't mad
- 7:20Speaker 1: at the Ninavites. He wasn't mad after sin and the
- 7:25Speaker 1: lifestyle that they were living. He was mad at God's mercy.
- 7:33Speaker 1: He knew right he had the revelation. Now this is
- 7:38Speaker 1: an Old Testament. Now check this out. I've heard people
- 7:42Speaker 1: criticize the Bible and they said that the God of
- 7:47Speaker 1: the Old Testament and the God of the New Testament
- 7:51Speaker 1: are totally two different gods. It is not because they
- 7:55Speaker 1: think the God of the Old Testament is a god
- 7:57Speaker 1: a wrath He just wants to kill everybody, wants to
- 8:00Speaker 1: judge everybody. As someone confront you with this at one time.
- 8:04Speaker 1: But look here in the book of Jonah in the
- 8:07Speaker 1: Old Testament, Jonah is upset because he knew God was gracious,
- 8:17Speaker 1: God was merciful, and Jonah feared that God would forgive
- 8:23Speaker 1: Nineveh if they repented. Now that sounds like the New Testament.
- 8:31Speaker 1: You see, he's the same yesterday, today, and forever. Here
- 8:37Speaker 1: he is in the Old Testament, being merciful and forgiving
- 8:45Speaker 1: the sin of an entire city, an entire nation. Now,
- 8:52Speaker 1: how many times have we seen someone get blessed or
- 8:56Speaker 1: even forgiven, and deep inside we say to ourselves we
- 9:01Speaker 1: feel like, man, they don't deserve that. Now Jonah exposes
- 9:09Speaker 1: something that's real self righteousness. When God forgives others, it
- 9:23Speaker 1: tests our hearts to see if we truly understand the
- 9:29Speaker 1: grace of God. Let me say that again. When God
- 9:34Speaker 1: forgives people, we think they don't deserve it. It's a
- 9:39Speaker 1: test for us, and it's also a lesson so that
- 9:46Speaker 1: we could understand the deaths of the grace of God.
- 9:53Speaker 1: And sometimes we get hard on ourselves. We condemn ourselves.
- 9:58Speaker 1: We don't understand that the grace of God goes deep
- 10:05Speaker 1: I verse two. So he prayed to the Lord and said, Ah, Lord,
- 10:11Speaker 1: was not this what I said when I was still
- 10:15Speaker 1: in my country. Therefore I fled previously to Tarsius, for
- 10:24Speaker 1: I know that you are a gracious and merciful God.
- 10:28Speaker 1: Again in the Old Testament, slow to anger and abundant
- 10:36Speaker 1: in loving kindness, one who relents from doing harm. Now
- 10:42Speaker 1: this is his complaint. Now, if it was him, right,
- 10:47Speaker 1: he would want the mercy. And I'm not just gonna
- 10:50Speaker 1: pick on Jonah. I'm gonna pick on us. If it
- 10:53Speaker 1: was us, we want mercy every second. But when it's
- 10:56Speaker 1: our enemies, somebody that did us wrong, somebody that low
- 11:05Speaker 1: key we probably hate. We been deserved judgment and God
- 11:09Speaker 1: is merciful, then we failed to understand the depths of
- 11:17Speaker 1: God's grace. That's the human heart for you. Now, Jonah,
- 11:35Speaker 1: his theology was correct, He was spot on with this theology.
- 11:40Speaker 1: He knew God's character, but his heart was wrong. He resented.
- 11:49Speaker 1: He resented the compassion of God. He resented it because
- 11:55Speaker 1: he had no love for the Ninavites. I mean, isn't
- 12:01Speaker 1: that a little wild? You know what I mean? Jonah
- 12:03Speaker 1: quotes God's goodness like it's a bad thing. We got
- 12:10Speaker 1: to check ourselves. We gotta really check ourselves in this.
- 12:15Speaker 1: Are we quoting scripture and knowing God's nature but refusing
- 12:22Speaker 1: to align our hearts with his mercy. Jonah refused to
- 12:30Speaker 1: get his heart right into getting into alignment with what
- 12:34Speaker 1: he knew about God. Beloved. Let's not make that same
- 12:44Speaker 1: mistake now verse three. Therefore, now, oh Lord, please take
- 12:51Speaker 1: my life. Remember I said he had a death wish.
- 12:54Speaker 1: He'd rather get on the ship for a boat and flee,
- 13:01Speaker 1: not care if that boat was sinking. He was just
- 13:04Speaker 1: gonna go down with everybody else, or tell them the
- 13:07Speaker 1: people to throw him overboard. I mean, think about this,
- 13:12Speaker 1: He could have cried out on the ship. How much
- 13:16Speaker 1: more impact would that have been if he cried out
- 13:23Speaker 1: before these sailors and they saw how merciful God was
- 13:31Speaker 1: and calmed the storm, and then he said, turn this
- 13:36Speaker 1: boat around and let's go to Nineveh, taking all in
- 13:40Speaker 1: with them, and then they would have heard the message
- 13:43Speaker 1: like they would have been instant disciples at that point.
- 13:47Speaker 1: But no, John, it was like, Uh, just throw.
- 13:50Speaker 4: Me overboard, knowing he would get killed, but either hypothermia
- 13:55Speaker 4: or drowned like he was really stubborn, and it took
- 14:02Speaker 4: him three days before he humbled himself.
- 14:07Speaker 1: All right. Jonah preferred death overseeing God's grace extended to others.
- 14:17Speaker 1: Jonah was dramatic, like, God, just kill me now. But
- 14:26Speaker 1: real talk, bitterness can blind us so bad that we'd
- 14:33Speaker 1: rather die than see our enemies get saved. This is
- 14:39Speaker 1: dangerous territory, holding grudges against the mercies of God. Let's
- 14:53Speaker 1: not find ourselves in the same place. This is one
- 14:58Speaker 1: serious check. Verse four, Then the Lord said, is it
- 15:07Speaker 1: right for you to be angry? God gently asked Jonah
- 15:14Speaker 1: a question. He's trying to draw out self examination. He's
- 15:23Speaker 1: trying to really get him to check himself. How many
- 15:25Speaker 1: times has God asked us a question? He's trying to
- 15:32Speaker 1: get us to examine our own hearts as well. Is
- 15:38Speaker 1: it right for you to be angry? And one thing
- 15:44Speaker 1: I do like about Jonah is he's honest. At least
- 15:47Speaker 1: he's up fur about it. He didn't try to hide it.
- 15:50Speaker 1: He didn't go yeah, oh no, I'm fine. How many
- 15:53Speaker 1: times do we do this in our marriages?
- 15:57Speaker 2: Right, it looks like you're lost an.
- 16:00Speaker 1: Our wives would come up to us, is it right
- 16:02Speaker 1: for you to be angry? And then we tried to
- 16:04Speaker 1: hide it? Oh nah, you know, I'm cool. I don't
- 16:07Speaker 1: want to talk about it. Our husbands come to their
- 16:11Speaker 1: wife and they get the silent treatment if Jonah comes
- 16:14Speaker 1: straight out, he says. So Jonah went out in verse
- 16:19Speaker 1: five of the city and sat on the east side. Oh,
- 16:31Speaker 1: let me start this on. So Jonah went out of
- 16:36Speaker 1: the city and sat on the east side of the city.
- 16:41Speaker 1: There he made himself a shelter and sat under it
- 16:45Speaker 1: in the shade until he might see what would become
- 16:51Speaker 1: of the city. So Jonah still he knew God was merciful,
- 16:58Speaker 1: but he was like, you know what, maybe God might
- 17:00Speaker 1: destroy it. So he just wanted to sit back and see.
- 17:05Speaker 1: Now Jonah was hoping maybe God would steal destroy many
- 17:09Speaker 1: of us. Maybe there was a chance. Now, Jonah set
- 17:17Speaker 1: up a front row seat to watch destruction, like waiting
- 17:22Speaker 1: for fireworks to show up. It's like the Fourth of July.
- 17:28Speaker 1: We get our chairs, we go to the park, and
- 17:31Speaker 1: we're waiting for the fireworks. Like he was waiting for
- 17:34Speaker 1: fire to fall from heaven or something, or earthquake or
- 17:37Speaker 1: something happened. But finally, while Jonah waited for judgment, God
- 17:44Speaker 1: was appearing to teach him mercy and compassion. So let's
- 17:51Speaker 1: go to verse six. And the Lord God appeared a
- 17:58Speaker 1: plant and made it come up over Jonah that it
- 18:05Speaker 1: might be shade for his head to deliver him from
- 18:10Speaker 1: his misery. So Jonah was very grateful for the plant.
- 18:20Speaker 1: Look at how merciful an amazing God is verse seven.
- 18:31Speaker 1: But as the morning drew the next day, God prepared
- 18:35Speaker 1: a warm or worm, and it damaged the plant that
- 18:40Speaker 1: it withered. And it happened when the sun arose that
- 18:46Speaker 1: God prepared a vehement east wind, and the sun beat
- 18:51Speaker 1: on Jonah's head so that he grew faint. Then he
- 18:57Speaker 1: wished death for himself, that it is better for me
- 19:01Speaker 1: to die than to be alive. Wow, look at his heart.
- 19:14Speaker 1: I mean, we can see that God, in his grace,
- 19:19Speaker 1: provided comfort even for Jonah's wrong attitude. Even when Jonah
- 19:27Speaker 1: was in the wrong spirit. God is so patient. Even
- 19:35Speaker 1: when Jonah's attitude was trash, God still gave him shade.
- 19:42Speaker 1: Now that's mercy blessing us when we don't deserve it.
- 19:49Speaker 1: How many times let's praise God? It praise right there?
- 19:54Speaker 1: I think back, how many times was I in sin
- 19:58Speaker 1: and compromise and God still bless me even though I
- 20:04Speaker 1: didn't deserve it? Well, newsflash, none of us deserve anything,
- 20:13Speaker 1: but God does it out of his love and out
- 20:16Speaker 1: of the fact that He just wanted to bless us.
- 20:20Speaker 1: But as morning dawn the next day, God prepared a
- 20:23Speaker 1: worm and did so damage the plant that it withered.
- 20:29Speaker 1: God prepared the plant, the worm, and the wind all
- 20:35Speaker 1: to teach Jonah a lesson about compassion. Now God controls
- 20:42Speaker 1: all the little details, the plants, the worms, the winds,
- 20:47Speaker 1: all the shape our hearts, all this so that He
- 20:53Speaker 1: can shape and work in our hearts. Sometimes he allows discomfort,
- 20:59Speaker 1: and he does it not so that he can destroy us,
- 21:03Speaker 1: but to discipline us. I stay encouraged whenever I get
- 21:08Speaker 1: disciplined by God. At least that let me know I'm his,
- 21:12Speaker 1: because he does not discipline other people's children. And Jonah
- 21:19Speaker 1: is still like, just let me die. That was pride talking.
- 21:25Speaker 1: And we know this. We've been there where we've hardened
- 21:28Speaker 1: our hearts so much to where it didn't matter what
- 21:31Speaker 1: anybody did. You know, hurt people, hurt people. And right now,
- 21:37Speaker 1: in September, this is suicide Awareness month, and so I
- 21:45Speaker 1: think it's amazing only Spirit led us to this book
- 21:49Speaker 1: and we can see the insight. We can see the heart.
- 21:52Speaker 1: That's just pride. It's a hardened heart. You're unwilling to budget.
- 21:57Speaker 1: And he talking about he's willing to die, but he
- 22:01Speaker 1: didn't want to be in the belly of that fish.
- 22:04Speaker 1: He should have made that fish jump out the water
- 22:07Speaker 1: and do a backflip, and that would have checked his
- 22:10Speaker 1: attitude right then and there. You know what I'm saying, like,
- 22:14Speaker 1: you don't want this smoke, like you was in there
- 22:17Speaker 1: for three days. You know you don't want to be dead.
- 22:19Speaker 1: You know what I'm saying. Anyway, Let's take verse nine
- 22:26Speaker 1: to ten. Then God said to Jonah, is it right
- 22:33Speaker 1: for you to be angry about the plant? See how
- 22:38Speaker 1: God deals with us. He's asking us the same question,
- 22:43Speaker 1: is it right for you to be angry? And now
- 22:48Speaker 1: he's talking about the plant, and he said, it is
- 22:53Speaker 1: right for me to be angry, even to death. Now
- 22:58Speaker 1: Jonah's just holding on to this hard and heart, to
- 23:01Speaker 1: this pride. It's like, it's right for me to be angry.
- 23:04Speaker 1: How many times have we tried to justify our bad attitude?
- 23:11Speaker 4: Wow?
- 23:19Speaker 1: Is it right for you to be angry? And this
- 23:23Speaker 1: is how Jonah responds verse ten. The Lord said, you
- 23:30Speaker 1: have had pity on the plant for which you have
- 23:33Speaker 1: not labored nor made it, which came up in the
- 23:39Speaker 1: night and perished in the night in a night. Now
- 23:56Speaker 1: God reveals Jonah cared more about a plant than about people.
- 24:06Speaker 1: Joint of value, its own comfort, more than the eternal
- 24:13Speaker 1: souls of one hundred and twenty thousand people out How
- 24:19Speaker 1: often do we put our convenience over someone else's salvation?
- 24:27Speaker 1: Now that's a heart check right there. How many times
- 24:32Speaker 1: have we been concerned about our own thing and our
- 24:36Speaker 1: own lives to where we were not willing to go
- 24:45Speaker 1: out and tell somebody about Jesus? All right, verse eleven,
- 24:54Speaker 1: as we wrap up this book, this is the final
- 24:57Speaker 1: verse in the final chapter. All right, let's see what
- 25:02Speaker 1: the Word has for us? And shall I not pity Nineveh,
- 25:08Speaker 1: that great city in which are more than one hundred
- 25:14Speaker 1: and twenty thousand persons who cannot discern between their right
- 25:20Speaker 1: and their left, and much live stock. God cared about
- 25:30Speaker 1: the city, He cared about the people. God ends the
- 25:35Speaker 1: book with a question. His compassion extends even to the animals,
- 25:44Speaker 1: even to the livestock. And one hundred and twenty thousand
- 25:51Speaker 1: people who don't know their right from their left. These
- 25:54Speaker 1: are children. So if there's one hundred twenty thousand children,
- 26:01Speaker 1: there had to be at least four million people in
- 26:04Speaker 1: this city. This people, I mean, this city was populated
- 26:08Speaker 1: with people. Now, finally, notice how the book just ends
- 26:20Speaker 1: with God's heart on full display. Jonah's heart was hardened,
- 26:28Speaker 1: but God was full of mercy. That's the challenge for
- 26:35Speaker 1: us today. Do we align our hearts with Jonah's bitterness
- 26:44Speaker 1: or God's compassion? Let me say that one more time.
- 26:48Speaker 1: Do we align our hearts with Jonah's bitterness or God's compassion? Remember,
- 27:00Speaker 1: all through this Bible, all through the book, God is
- 27:04Speaker 1: always dealing with the hearts of men. It's our heart posture.
- 27:12Speaker 1: Our hearts is the key to whether or not we're
- 27:16Speaker 1: making into the Kingdom. The Bible says, with all diligence,
- 27:21Speaker 1: guard your hearts, for out of it are the issues
- 27:24Speaker 1: of life. Jesus said the New Testament, what comes out
- 27:28Speaker 1: of the heart of men is what will defile them.
- 27:33Speaker 1: And so the challenge for us is to keep the
- 27:38Speaker 1: heart of God. We got to be loving, we got
- 27:44Speaker 1: to be compassionate, and the Word of God and the
- 27:50Speaker 1: Holy Spirit is here to help us on our journey.
- 27:58Speaker 1: All right, let's go ahead and none you're some music,
- 28:05Speaker 1: quick break, We'll be right back.
- 28:08Speaker 3: You are listening to the Light of Las Vegas. This
- 28:12Speaker 3: is the his Hop radio show.
- 28:15Speaker 2: It's got over everything. I put that on my mother
- 28:22Speaker 2: and on my mother and on Hey loud loud, you
- 28:27Speaker 2: mean just pive me find out them me, let me
- 28:30Speaker 2: find out, pet me find out, let me let me

- 29:02Speaker 2: it's love, but you we got to fend. Let me

- 31:53Speaker 1: great insight on the human heart and the difference between
- 31:59Speaker 1: us the heart of God. And we'd be wise to
- 32:06Speaker 1: stick with the heart of God to stay in alignment.
- 32:10Speaker 1: God's here to help us with that. We're not by ourselves.
- 32:13Speaker 1: We need to cry out to the Holy Spirit. We
- 32:15Speaker 1: need to ask God to re not change our hearts,
- 32:18Speaker 1: but to recreate our hearts. Amn, Hallelujah. We serve an
- 32:24Speaker 1: amazing God. All right. Time for the accountability Partner segment.
- 32:42Speaker 1: Make sure you go to the app his Hot Radio,
- 32:46Speaker 1: go to my podcast and click on the accountability form
- 32:52Speaker 1: the accountability Partner. It's a great self check. I went
- 32:56Speaker 1: through it and check my heart and basically, when you know,
- 33:05Speaker 1: we need community in this. We need to serve God together.
- 33:13Speaker 1: We need to be seeking God and helping each other. Right,
- 33:19Speaker 1: That's how God designed it. There's no such thing as
- 33:21Speaker 1: lone rangers sink, you know what I'm saying. So the
- 33:28Speaker 1: challenge is today, ask yourself, who in my life and
- 33:35Speaker 1: my refusing to forgive? That's the question. God showed mercy
- 33:45Speaker 1: to Nineveh and he wants me to extend that same
- 33:51Speaker 1: mercy to others. Accountability means checking my own heart before
- 33:58Speaker 1: checking someone else's. Let me say that again. Accountability means
- 34:04Speaker 1: check in our own hearts before we check the hearts
- 34:09Speaker 1: of others. All righth News. Now we want to let

- 35:47Speaker 1: ministry that is grinding in the street, coming out those
- 35:50Speaker 1: four walls out there to reach these souls. Right, just

- 36:05Speaker 1: and that's what we need to do. We need I'm
- 36:07Speaker 1: after the whole city of Las Vegas. This whole city
- 36:12Speaker 1: needs to repent.

- 36:16Speaker 1: Don't worry about the casinos. God is able to sustain
- 36:20Speaker 1: us other ways. But the important thing is to get

- 38:35Speaker 1: first book was Revelation, then we jumped to Rona Romans,
- 38:40Speaker 1: and now we're here at Jonah. So pray for me,
- 38:45Speaker 1: help me pray to see what direction the Holy Spirit
- 38:49Speaker 1: wants to take this podcast and what book we want
- 38:51Speaker 1: to tackle next. Now let's see the Book of Jonah.
- 39:01Speaker 1: Now we've been and we have seen rebellion, We've seen
- 39:07Speaker 1: we've seen repentance in this book, in revival and now
- 39:13Speaker 1: a heart check. God shows us the heart issue of Jonah.
- 39:23Speaker 1: Now let's not be like Jonah, bitter at God's mercy.
- 39:28Speaker 1: But let's walk in compassion like Christ. Now until next time,
- 39:40Speaker 1: keep chasing holiness, keep building a legacy, and remember we
- 39:47Speaker 1: walk this path together, and I'm gonna close it out
- 39:54Speaker 1: like we always do. It's not about us, It's all
- 40:00Speaker 1: about the Christ in us. See you in the next book.
- 40:19Speaker 3: You are listening to the light of Las Vegas. This
