- 0:01Speaker 1: What is going on? Welcome back to Refresh. I'm Jake Hoofer.
- 0:04Speaker 1: In this week. We have a great episode as we
- 0:06Speaker 1: are inching in on the end of December, and we
- 0:10Speaker 1: have some great intel and information for anyone that stills
- 0:13Speaker 1: tagging the pocket or wants to know what's going on
- 0:15Speaker 1: across the country. As you know, rough Fresh is brought
- 0:18Speaker 1: to you by land dot com, the leading online real
- 0:21Speaker 1: estate marketplace to find your perfect rural recreational I have
- 0:25Speaker 1: cultural hunting properties here in the US. It's been cold,
- 0:30Speaker 1: it's been frigid. We've had a really really strong winter
- 0:34Speaker 1: up to this point. Looks like there's going to be
- 0:36Speaker 1: some warmer temperatures here throughout this week. And what does
- 0:39Speaker 1: that mean to you? What can you do? We're gonna
- 0:42Speaker 1: have a variety of different guests here. We're going to
- 0:44Speaker 1: kick things off with Tyler Jones, who's in Texas and
- 0:48Speaker 1: hunts all over, but today he's in Texas. Here we go,
- 0:57Speaker 1: all right, first up on the line, guy that travels
- 1:00Speaker 1: a bunch, and so I'm just gonna ask Tyler, where
- 1:04Speaker 1: in the world are you right now?
- 1:06Speaker 2: I'm in Texas right now, been in Arkansas recently, so
- 1:11Speaker 2: most of our time has been spent in the South
- 1:13Speaker 2: the last week or two, maybe maybe two weeks, three weeks,
- 1:16Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 1:16Speaker 1: Time flies, Yeah, I mean the for deer hunters, the
- 1:21Speaker 1: world kind of resolves revolves around the Midwest. At least
- 1:24Speaker 1: that's just me because I live here and so the South.
- 1:26Speaker 1: You guys are down there right now, you're headed to
- 1:28Speaker 1: go check out a property. What have you been hearing
- 1:32Speaker 1: and seeing in terms of rud activity, because I know
- 1:34Speaker 1: it's getting more exciting there and more food centric here.
- 1:39Speaker 1: So you guys are getting to see what deer're supposed
- 1:41Speaker 1: to do and all the exciting things. Have you been
- 1:44Speaker 1: noticing that or seeing anything like that on camera?
- 1:47Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 1:47Speaker 2: I mean, so, you know, the Texas is a huge state,
- 1:51Speaker 2: so and super geographically diverse. Habitat is you know, crazy
- 1:56Speaker 2: different from the coast to the Transpagas region, to the
- 1:59Speaker 2: brush country of South Texas to the Panhandle which is
- 2:02Speaker 2: the Great Plains, to the you know, Black Lamp Prairie,
- 2:06Speaker 2: which is kind of where I live, all the way
- 2:09Speaker 2: into the piney Woods, which is like what you're see
- 2:11Speaker 2: in the South. So there's so many different things going on.
- 2:13Speaker 2: There's a ton of different ruts. The South is full
- 2:16Speaker 2: of different ruts all the way through out to Florida,
- 2:19Speaker 2: you know, and where I have been recently, what we're
- 2:23Speaker 2: seeing mostly our.
- 2:26Speaker 3: Mid November rut dates, and.
- 2:28Speaker 2: So we're starting to get to where deer getting back
- 2:31Speaker 2: onto food sources pretty heavy, probably much like what you're seeing.
- 2:34Speaker 2: In fact, I've one of our camera guys, Greg, he
- 2:37Speaker 2: said that he's had in the last like two days,
- 2:41Speaker 2: he's had like three shooter Bucks show up, one that
- 2:43Speaker 2: he hasn't seen since last year on feeders. So you know,
- 2:47Speaker 2: they're getting back into you know, trying to gain a
- 2:52Speaker 2: little bit of that that fat reserve back I guess
- 2:54Speaker 2: from the rut.
- 2:58Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah, So they're they're licking their jog here looking
- 3:01Speaker 1: you know, at this time of the year, and people
- 3:04Speaker 1: are still at it and they're not completely burnt out.
- 3:06Speaker 1: Because I think if you did a if you did
- 3:09Speaker 1: a survey family feud style of you know, are you
- 3:12Speaker 1: burnt out? Ninety nine five one hundred people said they're
- 3:15Speaker 1: burnt out and they're looking their own chops from deer season.
- 3:19Speaker 1: Where are you at in terms of motivation and excitement
- 3:22Speaker 1: as we close out the year of twenty twenty five,
- 3:25Speaker 1: I know season's going to twenty six here. But where
- 3:26Speaker 1: are you at in terms of excitement or being a
- 3:30Speaker 1: little rundown.
- 3:31Speaker 2: That's a really good question. I would say if you
- 3:33Speaker 2: asked me two days ago, I was a little rundown.
- 3:35Speaker 2: I slept pretty good last night, and so I'm like,
- 3:39Speaker 2: it's been four days since I've really hunted, which I
- 3:44Speaker 2: haven't had a four day stretch probably since September sometime.
- 3:49Speaker 2: So I mean, really I'm kind of itching to get
- 3:52Speaker 2: back out and do some hunting for sure. I actually
- 3:56Speaker 2: three or four days ago put out a feeder on
- 3:59Speaker 2: different property to get my son, you know, some action
- 4:03Speaker 2: out in the woods.
- 4:04Speaker 3: And so I'm actually pretty excited.
- 4:07Speaker 2: I would say there's a lot of people, you know,
- 4:09Speaker 2: I have a mutual friend out in Alabama that you know,
- 4:12Speaker 2: their their ruts are just I mean, this is like,
- 4:15Speaker 2: this is the exciting time of year for them. Their
- 4:17Speaker 2: ruts are gonna kick off in January, right, So, like
- 4:20Speaker 2: in the same way we've got in like I was
- 4:22Speaker 2: talking about earlier, the brush country South Texas, it's it's
- 4:25Speaker 2: starting to cook down there. I mean, the rut is
- 4:27Speaker 2: picking up. If you are blessed enough to have access
- 4:31Speaker 2: to brush country property like now as the Super Bowl
- 4:34Speaker 2: from now till through Christmas, you know, is really just good,
- 4:38Speaker 2: good stuff. And the thing about the South is that
- 4:40Speaker 2: we have huge shoulders on our ruts because the there's
- 4:45Speaker 2: not really a need for those to breed in a
- 4:48Speaker 2: certain tight window based off of like cold weather or whatever.
- 4:53Speaker 2: The funds don't necessarily have to be born in a
- 4:57Speaker 2: tight window because of weather, so the same way, the
- 5:01Speaker 2: rut can be spread out a little bit more and
- 5:03Speaker 2: so it makes for like a less intense rut, but
- 5:06Speaker 2: it also makes for a potential that any day you
- 5:11Speaker 2: go out right now you can see rut in action.
- 5:13Speaker 2: And in fact, even at home where we have a
- 5:16Speaker 2: mid November you know, I'd say November fourteen or so,
- 5:19Speaker 2: it's been like just the best the best day on
- 5:23Speaker 2: trail camera at home for us. We've seen a buck
- 5:29Speaker 2: that was just dog and doze in late February on
- 5:32Speaker 2: trail camera even at home. So you know, it can
- 5:35Speaker 2: happen at any time, and especially with those windows, you
- 5:38Speaker 2: have these fawns that are born later than normal, which
- 5:41Speaker 2: then they come in to heat in December or January
- 5:44Speaker 2: sometimes and so you know, it can kick the whole
- 5:47Speaker 2: thing back off on any random day. So I guess
- 5:49Speaker 2: I would say it's pretty exciting still to be hunting
- 5:53Speaker 2: in the rut. It's a lot different than the traditional
- 5:56Speaker 2: Midwest white tail where Bill Winki was saying after November
- 5:59Speaker 2: said you might as well hang it up.
- 6:01Speaker 3: You know, he wasn't really saying that.
- 6:02Speaker 2: But it's you know, you could tell there was an
- 6:04Speaker 2: urgency prior to that date, you know. So it's a
- 6:07Speaker 2: little different, and it's exciting. I'm excited. And we still,
- 6:10Speaker 2: you know, me and k C at the Element, we've
- 6:12Speaker 2: got quite a bit of hunting left to do. In fact,
- 6:16Speaker 2: we're you know, post Christmas, We've got several things lined
- 6:19Speaker 2: up and we've been booking all this Airbnbs.
- 6:22Speaker 3: And everything, you know, and we're we're excited to go
- 6:24Speaker 3: back out.
- 6:27Speaker 1: So with the with the plan here post Christmas, and
- 6:30Speaker 1: you know, people can maybe move those dates around a
- 6:32Speaker 1: little bit, maybe they have time during Christmas time. What
- 6:34Speaker 1: is kind of your guys' punch list or strategy, so
- 6:39Speaker 1: hopefully you know, connect with connect with the buck here
- 6:43Speaker 1: in the South.
- 6:44Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 6:45Speaker 2: Yeah, I i'd say if you're if you're coming up
- 6:47Speaker 2: into a rut, I'm probably not supposed to say this,
- 6:51Speaker 2: but there's a there's a version of a can call
- 6:53Speaker 2: that actually we used to laugh about a lot, and
- 6:55Speaker 2: I've seen work really well in the South the last
- 6:57Speaker 2: few years.
- 6:58Speaker 3: Uh.
- 6:59Speaker 2: That can call can work, uh for guys that are
- 7:02Speaker 2: coming into their ruts, coming up when you get into
- 7:05Speaker 2: the heart of the rut. It's crazy how effective that thing.
- 7:08Speaker 2: I've seen it be at times. I like that a lot,
- 7:13Speaker 2: especially a lot of guys they see it may be
- 7:18Speaker 2: from them, it may be from any yeah, yeah, like yeah,
- 7:21Speaker 2: that's the sound. It sounds a lot like a like
- 7:23Speaker 2: a pink or a woodcock, you know. But those like
- 7:28Speaker 2: I like that, especially for guys because a lot of
- 7:31Speaker 2: times people in your neck of the woods they make
- 7:33Speaker 2: these big, huge buck roars and these giant grunts that
- 7:36Speaker 2: sound like, you know, the deepest burp a human can make,
- 7:39Speaker 2: you know, And it's like, well, a Southern deer, it
- 7:43Speaker 2: weighs one hundred and sixty pounds, might not actually sound
- 7:45Speaker 2: like that, right, So these guys see it on TV.
- 7:47Speaker 2: They go to you know, just making these huge deep
- 7:50Speaker 2: roars and stuff. It's like, ah, that's there's not as
- 7:53Speaker 2: many deer in the South sounding like that, you know,
- 7:56Speaker 2: So if you're using that that can call. It's got
- 7:58Speaker 2: it's a little more realistic than what a guy might
- 8:01Speaker 2: have seen on TV. And you can't change the pitch
- 8:04Speaker 2: or anything like that to to sound like, you know,
- 8:07Speaker 2: Michael Waddell or something like that.
- 8:09Speaker 3: You know.
- 8:09Speaker 2: So I think that's a that's a good thing for
- 8:12Speaker 2: the rut now if you're if you're on the back
- 8:14Speaker 2: end of the rut here, I think, uh, wheat, wheat
- 8:17Speaker 2: is just hard to beat right now. Corn feeders obviously,
- 8:21Speaker 2: if you're in a state that allows that, which a
- 8:22Speaker 2: lot of the South does. Uh, the deer going to
- 8:25Speaker 2: be carving up, you know, post rut, I think. And
- 8:28Speaker 2: so we're seeing a lot of deer come back to
- 8:30Speaker 2: feeders right now. And I just I still think, uh,
- 8:34Speaker 2: like we were talking about a piece of public in
- 8:36Speaker 2: our home state. I was talking about it with Greg
- 8:39Speaker 2: yesterday and I was like, Man, if there's wheat there.
- 8:42Speaker 3: This, this would be a good spot.
- 8:44Speaker 2: And so in other words, we're looking at deer that
- 8:46Speaker 2: we're trying to pattern to deer moving and you want
- 8:48Speaker 2: to be closer to their.
- 8:49Speaker 3: Betting at this time of the year.
- 8:51Speaker 2: I think, then you do that food source unless you
- 8:53Speaker 2: really get a cold blast, which we just I think
- 8:56Speaker 2: it's a lot nina year, so we haven't had much
- 8:58Speaker 2: cold weather at all.
- 9:01Speaker 1: Real quick with the with the can call, are you
- 9:05Speaker 1: every twenty minutes flipping that thing over or every hour
- 9:08Speaker 1: or what you see a deer and you flip it
- 9:11Speaker 1: over to see how it reacts? Kind of what what
- 9:13Speaker 1: is the calling sequence for that?
- 9:15Speaker 3: Yeah, we hunt a lot and so you know, for.
- 9:19Speaker 2: You, you're pretty good strategist when it comes to like
- 9:25Speaker 2: having a target buck and a private property, and sometimes
- 9:28Speaker 2: we have some of that, and sometimes we end up
- 9:31Speaker 2: just you know, we're in this state for a week,
- 9:33Speaker 2: so let's hunt and find a hear and be aggressive.
- 9:36Speaker 2: So like for me, I would say, it didn't necessarily
- 9:39Speaker 2: work for everybody, but we're pretty aggressive.
- 9:40Speaker 3: So I would call like I would.
- 9:42Speaker 2: Yes, I'd call every fifteen minutes during the rut like
- 9:46Speaker 2: I would. I mean, if you're going to rattle same
- 9:49Speaker 2: thing like in the South, you may not make, you know,
- 9:53Speaker 2: your rattling sequence sound like two one sixties fight, and
- 9:56Speaker 2: you may make it sound a little thinner horned or whatever.
- 9:58Speaker 2: You may be a little less aggressive personally, like using
- 10:01Speaker 2: especially on still days. It will get this time of
- 10:04Speaker 2: year in the evenings when we have south winds or
- 10:06Speaker 2: east winds. I like sounding like two little dinkers that
- 10:10Speaker 2: are just messing around. And if you've ever watched it,
- 10:12Speaker 2: or you've never watched it, you should try to find
- 10:14Speaker 2: a YouTube clip of a couple of one to two
- 10:17Speaker 2: year olds just kind of not really fighting, but sparring.
- 10:20Speaker 2: And I think that that carries through the woods and
- 10:22Speaker 2: doing that every fifteen minutes or whatever for one or
- 10:25Speaker 2: two minutes, it's a good idea. I think it's a
- 10:29Speaker 2: good idea. Same with the can call doing it often.
- 10:31Speaker 2: But I do think, yeah, testing it on bucks, even
- 10:33Speaker 2: if it's not a target buck, as long as you
- 10:36Speaker 2: don't want to blow you know, you got to be
- 10:37Speaker 2: careful not to call a one year old over and
- 10:41Speaker 2: then he blows the entire woods out. You know, once
- 10:43Speaker 2: he once, he wins you. So that's the one, the
- 10:46Speaker 2: one thing you got to watch for there. But yeah,
- 10:48Speaker 2: I mean seeing it how they react. But I mean
- 10:50Speaker 2: I can tell you in the South that that can
- 10:52Speaker 2: call works pretty good when the rut's pretty high.
- 10:56Speaker 3: I mean, I really do like it, I really do.
- 11:01Speaker 1: I You're right, it does seem like those things get
- 11:05Speaker 1: made fun of. But if they work. Nothing funny about that.
- 11:08Speaker 3: Oh, we've laughed our heads off and talked about it
- 11:11Speaker 3: for years.
- 11:11Speaker 2: And then you know, we did the buck Truck series
- 11:14Speaker 2: for me Eater in twenty twenty two and if you
- 11:18Speaker 2: can go watch in the Arkansas episode, I can't call
- 11:21Speaker 2: two bucks, and I mean one of them comes to
- 11:25Speaker 2: I think thirty seven or something like that and the
- 11:27Speaker 2: other one is like fifty five.
- 11:30Speaker 3: But I mean it worked really well.
- 11:32Speaker 2: And that's on public land, you know, that's where they
- 11:34Speaker 2: hear calling every once in a while.
- 11:37Speaker 1: Yeah, but they probably don't hear that because everyone they
- 11:40Speaker 1: say to do something works, I know. Maybe that's why
- 11:43Speaker 1: that does the trick.
- 11:44Speaker 2: Yeah, you go, you know, go go to the trends
- 11:46Speaker 2: that were popular in the nineties and or early two thousands,
- 11:50Speaker 2: and people aren't using anymore and they probably stand a
- 11:53Speaker 2: chance of working and nobody else is using them, right.
- 11:57Speaker 1: Yeah, well, no, that's exciting, so real quick. The seventeenth
- 12:01Speaker 1: to Christmas Eve scale one to ten in your neck
- 12:04Speaker 1: of the woods, ten being the best, one being one
- 12:06Speaker 1: of the worst weeks of the year. Where are you
- 12:07Speaker 1: gonna put.
- 12:08Speaker 2: It in my neck of the woods, I'd say.
- 12:14Speaker 3: Man, I'm not gonna give it the Midwest six.
- 12:17Speaker 2: What's called a seven if you have food? I think
- 12:19Speaker 2: it's a seven. Okay, Yeah, I think there's like I
- 12:22Speaker 2: think that you're going to be coming back to feeders.
- 12:25Speaker 2: They're gonna be on wheat fields. If we can get weather,
- 12:27Speaker 2: which I hadn't looked at the weather. I know we
- 12:29Speaker 2: have some kind of stable weather the first part of
- 12:32Speaker 2: this week. But if we can get a little bit
- 12:36Speaker 2: of weather, I think that it's a really good time
- 12:39Speaker 2: to find a big buck, maybe checking for the last doze,
- 12:44Speaker 2: but knowing that the food source is there to really
- 12:47Speaker 2: kind of be the destination.
- 12:51Speaker 1: I like it. Well, Tyler, if people want to fall
- 12:53Speaker 1: along with your guys the season and all the hunts
- 12:55Speaker 1: that you guys have done literally across it feels like
- 12:58Speaker 1: the entire country, and that probably is a pretty fair
- 13:00Speaker 1: word to say say it. Where can they go watch
- 13:02Speaker 1: all those?
- 13:03Speaker 2: Yeah, man, I appreciate you allow me to do this,
- 13:08Speaker 2: but uh, the Element Hunting is a good search on
- 13:11Speaker 2: YouTube and you'll you'll find our channel.
- 13:14Speaker 3: If you search the Element you might find a skateboard brand.
- 13:16Speaker 2: So Putting Hunting in there is a pretty good idea
- 13:20Speaker 2: and you can just yeah, you can follow along with
- 13:22Speaker 2: what we've been doing.
- 13:23Speaker 3: We're, uh, we're putting out videos.
- 13:27Speaker 2: You know, the rut November is pretty tough for us
- 13:29Speaker 2: to get videos out sometimes, so but we're back to
- 13:33Speaker 2: putting out videos pretty regularly right now.
- 13:35Speaker 3: And uh, yeah, we.
- 13:36Speaker 2: Just travel all over and hunt stuff and you know,
- 13:40Speaker 2: sometimes we shoot them, sometimes we don't. But you can
- 13:43Speaker 2: follow us on Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, all that stuff.
- 13:47Speaker 3: Too.
- 13:49Speaker 1: Awesome. Thank you so much, Tyler. Good luck the rest
- 13:52Speaker 1: of the year, and I hope you and your family
- 13:53Speaker 1: have an awesome Christmas.
- 13:55Speaker 3: Thanks you too, Jake.
- 13:56Speaker 1: All right, next up, I have my good friend David Powell.
- 13:59Speaker 1: David a lot of places. He's been spending a lot
- 14:02Speaker 1: of time in Kansas. How's it going going well, Jake?
- 14:05Speaker 4: How about yourself?
- 14:06Speaker 1: It's going great, It's it's going great. It's actually snowing
- 14:10Speaker 1: right here in Illinois right now. We're supposed to get
- 14:12Speaker 1: more snow and more cold weather. So as a deer
- 14:15Speaker 1: hunter this time of year, that's that's okay with me.
- 14:19Speaker 1: What's been going on here? I know you're traveling here
- 14:21Speaker 1: a little bit for the holidays, but how has the
- 14:24Speaker 1: hunting been specifically in Kansas here recently?
- 14:27Speaker 5: You know big bucks have still been hitting the ground.
- 14:31Speaker 5: Rifle season just closed down a week or so ago.
- 14:34Speaker 5: I have noticed that it seems like the bucks are
- 14:36Speaker 5: getting back to food sources to try to replennge some
- 14:39Speaker 5: of that that body weight was lost maybe during the
- 14:42Speaker 5: chasing phase. So I'm concentrating my efforts on and around
- 14:46Speaker 5: food sources. I think that you know I've been chasing
- 14:51Speaker 5: a big deer. I confided in you earlier in the
- 14:53Speaker 5: season that there's a big deer while out that's chase
- 14:56Speaker 5: still continues. Oh, but I wasn't able to catch up
- 14:59Speaker 5: with him early in year, like I hope. Typically he
- 15:03Speaker 5: makes a journey an excursion to the south right I
- 15:06Speaker 5: don't have access, but usually about this time he comes
- 15:11Speaker 5: back home. As a matter of fact, in twenty twenty three,
- 15:13Speaker 5: I encountered that deer on the twenty second of December,
- 15:16Speaker 5: bumped him from out of a travel corridor.
- 15:20Speaker 4: And I remembered that.
- 15:21Speaker 5: And then a few days later I was in the
- 15:23Speaker 5: tree and he came down that travel corridor again on
- 15:26Speaker 5: his way to food. Unfortunately, I was managed to miss
- 15:30Speaker 5: that dear at seventeen yards. But the good news is
- 15:33Speaker 5: he's survived and this year he's you know, two years later,
- 15:37Speaker 5: he's even more significant than he was that year.
- 15:39Speaker 1: Wow. And so you mentioned a really interesting thing there.
- 15:42Speaker 1: You were hunting a travel corridor to food. I feel
- 15:44Speaker 1: like a lot of times people want to hunt over food.
- 15:49Speaker 1: With that said, obviously there's added benefits there, potentially easier
- 15:52Speaker 1: to get out of there. Do you want to talk
- 15:55Speaker 1: a little bit about the strategy now that you have,
- 15:58Speaker 1: you know, a couple of years of history at an encounter,
- 16:00Speaker 1: you know, within within the danger zone. Is that still
- 16:04Speaker 1: top of mind as we you know, are looking deeper
- 16:06Speaker 1: into December, you know that. Do you think history will
- 16:08Speaker 1: repeat itself in that same pinch?
- 16:10Speaker 5: I'm certainly hoping so. So I mentioned to you that
- 16:12Speaker 5: the deer takes an excursion. I left Kansas yesterday, flew
- 16:16Speaker 5: to central Ohio and back in the east for some
- 16:19Speaker 5: some holiday uh get together with the.
- 16:22Speaker 4: Family and others. But as I was leaving, I did get.
- 16:25Speaker 5: Some photo overnight and I had hung a new camera
- 16:29Speaker 5: uh in in that same corridor. I hung that camera
- 16:33Speaker 5: the first series of pictures I got. After I left,
- 16:35Speaker 5: I realized that it needed to be lowered just a bit.
- 16:38Speaker 5: But the deer is a very distinctive fork on the
- 16:41Speaker 5: left side of his on the left side of his rack.
- 16:44Speaker 5: And uh, yesterday morning as I was head of the airport,
- 16:48Speaker 5: I got a photo of that distinctive left fork.
- 16:52Speaker 4: I'm sure it's him. He's returned.
- 16:54Speaker 5: History is hopefully you know, he's back in his traditional
- 16:58Speaker 5: winter area. And my hope is that whenever I get back,
- 17:02Speaker 5: I'll be able to get back in that travel corridor
- 17:04Speaker 5: and maybe catch up with it.
- 17:06Speaker 1: That that's spot where he had an opportunity in the past.
- 17:08Speaker 1: How far off of the food source was that it
- 17:10Speaker 1: is one hundred yards two hundred yards seventy yards.
- 17:13Speaker 5: I'm about two two hundred to two hundred and fifty
- 17:15Speaker 5: yards off the main food source. The food source I'll
- 17:18Speaker 5: describe for you is an oakmont. It's about it's about
- 17:22Speaker 5: twenty two acres of pinoaks at the end of about.
- 17:27Speaker 4: The travel corridor is about one point three miles.
- 17:29Speaker 5: Betting area is all along that travel corridor, but oftentimes
- 17:32Speaker 5: throughout the year it's it's towards the lower end of that.
- 17:35Speaker 5: So they're coming somewhere from anywhere from a quarter mile
- 17:38Speaker 5: to nearly a mile away.
- 17:41Speaker 4: And I because that because that Oakmont is so large.
- 17:44Speaker 5: You know, twenty two acres isn't overly large, but it's
- 17:47Speaker 5: it's big when you're trying.
- 17:48Speaker 4: To bet an narrow and a deer.
- 17:50Speaker 5: And so I'd rather focus on I'd rather focus on
- 17:52Speaker 5: his travel to that area as to which specific tree
- 17:55Speaker 5: I need to be in within that twenty two acres
- 17:57Speaker 5: And that's that's that worked out well for me previous
- 18:00Speaker 5: sleep and let's hope that that can happen again this year.
- 18:02Speaker 4: We'll see.
- 18:03Speaker 1: Yeah, So you know, I think a lot of people
- 18:05Speaker 1: here are wondering and trying to strategize when is the
- 18:08Speaker 1: time to go and apply pressure, right Like these deer
- 18:11Speaker 1: have been pressured, you know, in some areas pretty heavily
- 18:14Speaker 1: throughout the year. Knowing windows of opportunity are frankly closing
- 18:20Speaker 1: for this season. When you're going to be looking here
- 18:24Speaker 1: in the next week when you when you get back
- 18:25Speaker 1: to Kansas to do a little bit more hunting, are
- 18:27Speaker 1: you watching the weather most specifically or or is the
- 18:31Speaker 1: wind more important for the deer to travel with the
- 18:34Speaker 1: wind you know, poor into or in favor to like
- 18:37Speaker 1: what's kind of the plan? Like, Okay, I'm going to
- 18:39Speaker 1: go in there and I'm going to try and I hope,
- 18:41Speaker 1: I hope it comes together, Like what's the hierarchy of
- 18:44Speaker 1: decisions there?
- 18:45Speaker 4: You know what?
- 18:46Speaker 5: The window was closing, as you said, And I don't
- 18:48Speaker 5: want to throw I don't want to throw time in there.
- 18:51Speaker 4: That would be detrimental to future efforts.
- 18:53Speaker 5: But at the same time, there's only so many days
- 18:55Speaker 5: left in the season, so wind is going to be
- 18:58Speaker 5: a factor. It's not going to be determining factor if
- 19:00Speaker 5: I hunt that day. It's going to be the determining
- 19:02Speaker 5: factor on which side of that travel corridor I.
- 19:04Speaker 4: Happen to be on it.
- 19:05Speaker 5: Also, weather, I'd love to have cold weather, so he
- 19:08Speaker 5: gets on his feet early and wants to get in.
- 19:10Speaker 4: There and and and begin to.
- 19:12Speaker 5: Feed before before it gets too late, or maybe even
- 19:15Speaker 5: feed throughout the day. But if if we've got eighty
- 19:18Speaker 5: degree depatures, I hope that's not the case. But because
- 19:21Speaker 5: I've got just a few days left, I will be
- 19:22Speaker 5: in there.
- 19:23Speaker 1: Somch what just jumping around here a little bit. So
- 19:35Speaker 1: obviously you grew up in West Virginia. Is that you
- 19:38Speaker 1: grew up there, right? So I want you to I
- 19:40Speaker 1: want you to jump back to someone that's listening in
- 19:42Speaker 1: West Virginia. They still have a tag in their pocket?
- 19:45Speaker 1: What was your what was your back of tricks for
- 19:48Speaker 1: this time a year in West Virginia.
- 19:50Speaker 5: So I've got a good friend who's kind of in
- 19:52Speaker 5: a similar situation. He's been chasing a deer all year
- 19:54Speaker 5: long back in West Virginia. It's a very significant deer.
- 19:57Speaker 5: This guy is a big buck killer. Uh at to Jamie.
- 20:01Speaker 5: But he is a big buck killer and he knows
- 20:04Speaker 5: what he's doing. This deer has been given him the slip.
- 20:07Speaker 5: I think that he is, like, like I am planning
- 20:10Speaker 5: to do, is going to start concentrating more on the
- 20:12Speaker 5: food sources out of the areas where he has been
- 20:15Speaker 5: trying to catch up with the deer chasing chasing does
- 20:19Speaker 5: and I would encourage him to put the time in
- 20:23Speaker 5: whenever he has opportunity to be in the stand. Make
- 20:26Speaker 5: sure he's cognizant of the wind, but don't let him
- 20:27Speaker 5: keep him from hunting. But really focus on those food sources,
- 20:31Speaker 5: and if you're able to narrow down how they're accessing
- 20:34Speaker 5: those food sources, particularly on days where that might not
- 20:37Speaker 5: be ideal and they might not be wanting to get
- 20:39Speaker 5: up until right at dark, I encourage Jamie to move
- 20:43Speaker 5: off that food source down down the travel way a
- 20:46Speaker 5: bit so that he can intercept them before shooting black expires.
- 20:51Speaker 1: It is often a little fascinating if you're in a
- 20:53Speaker 1: spot where you can see the deer travel. They can
- 20:55Speaker 1: cover three, four or five hundred yards pretty quickly when
- 20:58Speaker 1: it's cold, and you know, you see him like you're
- 21:01Speaker 1: watching the clock. Oh man, we only have fifteen twenty
- 21:03Speaker 1: more minutes. And you look back up and they're like, oh,
- 21:05Speaker 1: they're half the distance. You look back up again. Now
- 21:08Speaker 1: they're they're getting in within a striking zone. So I
- 21:10Speaker 1: feel that depending on setups and cover and everything else
- 21:13Speaker 1: in between there, But I wouldn't like, personally, I wouldn't
- 21:16Speaker 1: feel terrible if it's like, Okay, I think he's six
- 21:18Speaker 1: seven hundred yards away, betted here, the weather's right, pretty
- 21:21Speaker 1: darn good chance. If you have to correct food source,
- 21:23Speaker 1: he'll be there. Would you say that's a fair way
- 21:25Speaker 1: to describe it, because I'm I'm picturing your Kansas set
- 21:28Speaker 1: up there miles kind of far. But they can cover
- 21:31Speaker 1: that pretty quick.
- 21:33Speaker 5: Yeah, especially if the weather has them on their feet.
- 21:35Speaker 5: You know, cold, cold temperatures will be in our favor.
- 21:38Speaker 5: I believe my hope is that it plays out that way,
- 21:42Speaker 5: even if we can get a little skiff of snow
- 21:43Speaker 5: on the ground where you've got to come up there
- 21:44Speaker 5: and begin to pall at the ground and look for
- 21:46Speaker 5: those acres.
- 21:48Speaker 4: But we'll see what happens.
- 21:49Speaker 5: But I think that that mile, you know, not only
- 21:54Speaker 5: that the deer that I'm interested in, but every deer
- 21:56Speaker 5: around the area is going to be focusing on food
- 21:59Speaker 5: and they're going to be trying to their way to
- 22:00Speaker 5: that oakmoth that I talked about.
- 22:02Speaker 1: MM, is that pretty much the main food source for
- 22:07Speaker 1: that you know general area?
- 22:08Speaker 6: Is there?
- 22:09Speaker 1: Like is there like a winter wee field that obviously
- 22:11Speaker 1: there's feeders in Kansas? Like how much is that detrimental
- 22:15Speaker 1: to you know, your particular setup.
- 22:18Speaker 5: So we've got we've got some ag in the area,
- 22:20Speaker 5: but cornfield has been picked, Beanfield has been picked. They
- 22:24Speaker 5: do get in there at night and scavenge some of
- 22:26Speaker 5: the some of the drop that's that's left in the field,
- 22:29Speaker 5: but by and large, they seem to be the particular
- 22:33Speaker 5: agfields I'm thinking of are somewhat exposed, and I think
- 22:37Speaker 5: they're very hesitant to be out there during daylight hours.
- 22:40Speaker 5: There the oak moth that I'm talking about is very secluded.
- 22:44Speaker 5: It gets virtually no pressure other than the pressure that
- 22:46Speaker 5: I might put on it. And uh, it seems to
- 22:49Speaker 5: be an open smortas board form throughout the day.
- 22:52Speaker 1: Wonderful, wonderful. So looking here ahead of a head of schedule,
- 22:55Speaker 1: you know, the holidays, uh sometimes gives people a little
- 22:57Speaker 1: bit opportunity to maybe sneak out hunt. You know, the
- 23:00Speaker 1: seventeenth to Christmas Eve known the weather, known the conditions,
- 23:05Speaker 1: time of year on a scale one to ten, ten
- 23:08Speaker 1: being the very best week of the year, one being
- 23:10Speaker 1: one of the worst weeks of the year. Where do
- 23:12Speaker 1: you throw the next seven days at?
- 23:15Speaker 5: You know, if we get the right weather, I'm going
- 23:17Speaker 5: to say it should be seven to eight. I feel
- 23:20Speaker 5: that good about it.
- 23:21Speaker 1: Yeah, that's great. So do you think you'll be in
- 23:24Speaker 1: that tree on the twenty second?
- 23:27Speaker 5: I anticipate being in that tree, maybe the twenty second
- 23:30Speaker 5: through the end of the year, if necessary, in and
- 23:33Speaker 5: around that tree. I don't want to overhook one spot,
- 23:36Speaker 5: but yes, I and to the point that even though
- 23:39Speaker 5: I I'm primarily a saddle hundred these days, my platform
- 23:43Speaker 5: is hanging in that tree right now. My saddle platform
- 23:45Speaker 5: is hanging in that tree right now with anticipation when
- 23:47Speaker 5: I get back, I'll be in there.
- 23:50Speaker 1: Here's this side tangic question, how many saddle platforms do
- 23:53Speaker 1: you have? Because I wonder that's I like, I talked
- 23:58Speaker 1: to a lot of guys obviously, and it's like, I
- 23:59Speaker 1: no quite a few that have like two or three
- 24:01Speaker 1: saddle platforms to where they can kind of rotate. Is
- 24:04Speaker 1: that do you fall in that category?
- 24:06Speaker 4: I have four. I have three that I use primarily.
- 24:10Speaker 5: I've got one that is a it's carbon fiber, the
- 24:14Speaker 5: large stand that Tether makes in carbon fiber, and that's
- 24:17Speaker 5: the one I leave in the tree if I know
- 24:18Speaker 5: that it's going to be a place and I'm going
- 24:20Speaker 5: to revisit. But I really prefer they're small carbon fiber predator.
- 24:25Speaker 5: I carry that with me pretty pretty religiously. And then
- 24:29Speaker 5: I've got a I've got the old car, the old predator,
- 24:33Speaker 5: the metal version that when I need something extra, I
- 24:37Speaker 5: can fall back on it. But I'm typically packing that
- 24:39Speaker 5: small carbon fiber predator. I've got one stick that that
- 24:43Speaker 5: is available to me, but I don't use all that often.
- 24:48Speaker 1: Yeah, it's it's funny just the transition of saddle hunting.
- 24:53Speaker 1: It's like it's almost somewhat reverting back to to having
- 24:56Speaker 1: like obviously multiple multiple spots. But I think having multiple
- 24:59Speaker 1: platforms makes total and perfect sense instead of having to
- 25:01Speaker 1: fully tear up and tear down every single time, especially
- 25:03Speaker 1: spot you plan and returning.
- 25:05Speaker 5: One of the things I've been doing is, and I
- 25:07Speaker 5: kind of got this from from Eberhart.
- 25:09Speaker 4: I know that he preps trees in advance.
- 25:12Speaker 5: So one of the things I've been doing I bought
- 25:14Speaker 5: a big spool of pair cord and throughout the season,
- 25:18Speaker 5: early in the season especially, but throughout the season, if
- 25:21Speaker 5: it's a spot I want to return back to, I'm
- 25:22Speaker 5: putting a pair of cord loop in that tree over
- 25:25Speaker 5: over a branch ahead, over a branch up ahead, and
- 25:29Speaker 5: I will get there that morning time.
- 25:31Speaker 4: I tether too that.
- 25:33Speaker 5: I use a full length repair repel rope and I
- 25:35Speaker 5: do this, pull it up and over loop it in there,
- 25:37Speaker 5: and I can get back up that tree very quietly
- 25:40Speaker 5: without having to get in there and cut limbs and
- 25:42Speaker 5: make a path through the through the understory to get
- 25:45Speaker 5: up to the canopy.
- 25:46Speaker 4: It works out very very well for me.
- 25:48Speaker 1: Yeah, that's pretty interesting. Well, David, I hope you have
- 25:51Speaker 1: a great holiday, a great uh travel here, and I hope,
- 25:55Speaker 1: like heck, you get to seal you get to seal
- 25:57Speaker 1: the final chatter in the story. I'm really rooting for you.
- 26:00Speaker 5: Thank you, Jake, I appreciate that. Merry Christmas to you
- 26:02Speaker 5: and your listeners. Before we run, are you have you
- 26:06Speaker 5: had some success this year? Tell me about the one
- 26:08Speaker 5: that I know that you've been chasing.
- 26:09Speaker 1: Yeah, so the one of it chasing he he's still alive, which, honestly,
- 26:13Speaker 1: now at this point of the season, I'm hopeful that
- 26:16Speaker 1: he Honestly, it's kind of sick. You were trying to,
- 26:18Speaker 1: like heck to kill him and now you're like, well,
- 26:19Speaker 1: maybe maybe it wouldn't be the worst thing on earth
- 26:22Speaker 1: if he lives another year. And then I actually shot
- 26:23Speaker 1: a buck last weekend during our firearm season, a mature
- 26:27Speaker 1: buck that I was hoping to kill. I basically built
- 26:31Speaker 1: my season into two different legs. Leg one is one
- 26:34Speaker 1: of two bucks till the end of Thanksgiving. Week of Thanksgiving,
- 26:38Speaker 1: if I'm unsuccessful, I'm going mature buck hunting, And frankly,
- 26:43Speaker 1: that was a lot easier than trying to kill just
- 26:46Speaker 1: darn one deer. So it's been good.
- 26:49Speaker 5: You mentioned that it wouldn't disappoint you if that deer
- 26:51Speaker 5: makes it through. That kind of coincides with something that
- 26:53Speaker 5: hurt Don. You can say earlier this week on the
- 26:57Speaker 5: white Tail Masterclass.
- 26:58Speaker 1: That I heard, Yeah, yeah, they make it this far.
- 27:00Speaker 1: It's like, well, gosh, maybe they'll make it the rest
- 27:02Speaker 1: of the way. And it is. It's always fluid, and
- 27:07Speaker 1: you can't be married to an idea. But now it's
- 27:09Speaker 1: been a really fun and exciting season and I hope
- 27:12Speaker 1: I get a text message enter around the twenty second
- 27:15Speaker 1: that they connect with that deer.
- 27:17Speaker 5: Thank you, Jake, I really appreciate once again married Christmas.
- 27:19Speaker 5: Thanks for having me.
- 27:20Speaker 1: On all right. Next up on the line, we have
- 27:22Speaker 1: Bo Martonic with eats East meets West.
- 27:25Speaker 6: How's it going good, Jake, It's good to catch up
- 27:28Speaker 6: with you man.
- 27:29Speaker 1: Yeah. Absolutely, We're we're getting deeper and deeper into December,
- 27:33Speaker 1: and for people to have a tag in their pocket,
- 27:35Speaker 1: they're probably getting more and more nervous. But we've had
- 27:37Speaker 1: some good conditions. Pennsylvania's closed for the next seven days,
- 27:42Speaker 1: so I know you still have a tag in West Virginia,
- 27:45Speaker 1: but as you know, overall, I know you were just
- 27:48Speaker 1: in Ohio. What have you been seeing as far as
- 27:50Speaker 1: deer activity, you know, through cameras, observation, friends, buddies, kind
- 27:55Speaker 1: of across the board.
- 27:57Speaker 7: Man, it's been. It's actually been pretty dang good across
- 28:02Speaker 7: the board. The weather has been. I mean, we have
- 28:04Speaker 7: a pretty early winner as when you look at the
- 28:08Speaker 7: average over the last you know, five six years. Last
- 28:12Speaker 7: year we have some snow, but this year is like
- 28:14Speaker 7: snow all of December here, cold weather. Right now it's
- 28:18Speaker 7: six degrees at my house, so it's like it's pretty
- 28:21Speaker 7: pretty cold weather. And been seeing the deer putting on
- 28:26Speaker 7: the feedbags a little bit more and moving even after
- 28:31Speaker 7: gun season here in Pennsylvania, just closing still seeing deer
- 28:35Speaker 7: on their feet in daylight camera activity for the most part.
- 28:39Speaker 7: I haven't been out here, but yeah, it's been. It's
- 28:43Speaker 7: been pretty good as far as that goes.
- 28:45Speaker 1: And so for someone that's hunting, you know, more eastern easterly, yeah,
- 28:51Speaker 1: you know, very little ag just for just for a
- 28:54Speaker 1: dummy like me. What is the primary food source in
- 28:58Speaker 1: your neck of the woods for this time of year?
- 29:00Speaker 7: Snow on the ground, So honestly, acorns are are probably
- 29:07Speaker 7: top of that where that could get a little bit
- 29:10Speaker 7: more difficult here coming probably in the in the coming weeks,
- 29:14Speaker 7: is we have a little bit of a thaw coming
- 29:16Speaker 7: up towards the end of this week, and then it's
- 29:19Speaker 7: gonna get cold again, so you start getting that freezing layer,
- 29:22Speaker 7: it's harder to dig down for the deer to get
- 29:24Speaker 7: to those acorns. So my personal opinion, if I were
- 29:28Speaker 7: to be hunting this week, I'd be wanting an area
- 29:30Speaker 7: that did have acorns still, but also a ton of brows,
- 29:34Speaker 7: you know, green brier, BlackBerry briers, things like that that
- 29:38Speaker 7: they're nipping on and being able to to you to
- 29:42Speaker 7: browse on in the area where there's acorns. In addition,
- 29:46Speaker 7: places that have spring seats stuff like that that might
- 29:50Speaker 7: stay thought a little bit longer as far as they're
- 29:53Speaker 7: not going to completely freeze up and they can still
- 29:56Speaker 7: dig some of those, you know, the acorns and food
- 29:59Speaker 7: that's on the ground.
- 30:00Speaker 1: And so if you had a rank your favorite acorn
- 30:04Speaker 1: for this time of year, do you have one or
- 30:05Speaker 1: is it just a matter of finding acorns?
- 30:07Speaker 7: They're eating whatever's there, honestly, but it seems like red
- 30:12Speaker 7: oak and chestnut oak seemed to be the ones that
- 30:17Speaker 7: are left on the ground.
- 30:18Speaker 6: Right now.
- 30:20Speaker 1: And I know you recently shot a deer in Ohio
- 30:22Speaker 1: with snow on the ground. How did that come together?
- 30:24Speaker 1: It's non you know out of state hunt. Was that
- 30:27Speaker 1: a new area area you've hunted in the past, and
- 30:29Speaker 1: how did it all come together?
- 30:31Speaker 7: So I'd hunted the area in October for like two
- 30:34Speaker 7: days during bo season, went back to that area. I
- 30:38Speaker 7: had three days to hunt with a gun and didn't
- 30:41Speaker 7: the area I was in, the acorns were kind of
- 30:44Speaker 7: scooped up already. I'd sat all day the first day
- 30:47Speaker 7: gun season. I don't like walking around and bumping deer
- 30:49Speaker 7: to other people. So I sat all day nothing and
- 30:53Speaker 7: went back the next morning after some snow, and then
- 30:56Speaker 7: I realized, I was like, there's.
- 30:58Speaker 6: The acorns are gone.
- 30:59Speaker 1: You know.
- 31:00Speaker 7: I kind of went in blind and just set up
- 31:02Speaker 7: based on what I saw in October. And so I
- 31:04Speaker 7: moved to a completely new area that I hadn't been
- 31:07Speaker 7: before and started finding a ton of acorns. And really,
- 31:11Speaker 7: to make a long story short with it, what it
- 31:15Speaker 7: came down to is there was digging everywhere. There's a
- 31:17Speaker 7: lot of acorns on these ridges, and I just kept
- 31:21Speaker 7: kind of pushing to where it was starting to get thicker.
- 31:24Speaker 7: And I think the thing is that makes it difficult,
- 31:29Speaker 7: especially when you going out to state hunt this time
- 31:31Speaker 7: of year is like when you see snow is such
- 31:33Speaker 7: a great teacher. You can learn so much by seeing
- 31:37Speaker 7: where they're feeding at, seeing the tracks, seeing the beds,
- 31:40Speaker 7: where you can almost get over excited because you'll see
- 31:43Speaker 7: beds all over in the oak trees and where they're
- 31:46Speaker 7: feeding at, but it's likely nighttime activity. So and figuring
- 31:51Speaker 7: out what that area looks like for quote unquote thickness
- 31:55Speaker 7: is also very different. There's some areas that you can
- 31:58Speaker 7: go that's very thick everyone, and that's different than an
- 32:02Speaker 7: area that's just mature timber. And then all of a
- 32:05Speaker 7: sudden you get a green brier patch and some vines
- 32:08Speaker 7: and some other blowdowns that start to create better security
- 32:12Speaker 7: habitat as well as brows around that. So where I
- 32:16Speaker 7: ended up catching up with this buck was I got
- 32:18Speaker 7: into this big bowl system.
- 32:20Speaker 6: So there's a.
- 32:21Speaker 7: Couple of finger ridges that ran off a main ridge
- 32:23Speaker 7: in a bowl that had a bunch of like kind
- 32:25Speaker 7: of spring seeps running through it and created some more vegetation.
- 32:29Speaker 6: So there was a ton of green brier in there.
- 32:31Speaker 7: There was some oak trees acorns that were kind of
- 32:34Speaker 7: like funneling down because of the way the terrain that
- 32:37Speaker 7: acorns had rolled down into some of those little gullies
- 32:40Speaker 7: and created like a concentrated spot for it. And up
- 32:44Speaker 7: above was just a nasty thicket that was on top
- 32:47Speaker 7: of the ridge. And when i'd snuck in there that
- 32:50Speaker 7: day it was about one o'clock, I'd seen three different
- 32:53Speaker 7: bucks bedded down actually in the center of that bowl,
- 32:57Speaker 7: on this little tiny bump or high spot of greenbrier,
- 33:02Speaker 7: and they were actually fighting and doing stuff middle of
- 33:05Speaker 7: the day, just you know, a couple of younger bucks
- 33:07Speaker 7: in one. It was a pretty decent one that I
- 33:10Speaker 7: took a lot of self control for me not to
- 33:14Speaker 7: pull the trigger on, and I just ended up still hunting.
- 33:18Speaker 6: My way through there.
- 33:19Speaker 7: Came back and I went out, and I thought I'd
- 33:21Speaker 7: kind of blown up the area. And this is a
- 33:23Speaker 7: lesson that I think is something I've learned before and
- 33:28Speaker 7: I had to relearn on this hunt. Was I was
- 33:30Speaker 7: going through there, and when you get into a bowl,
- 33:32Speaker 7: wind swirl, and so I've got wind going up to
- 33:34Speaker 7: where I think the rest of the deer might be bedded.
- 33:37Speaker 6: I've got it going down I'm like, all right, I
- 33:39Speaker 6: blew out that area.
- 33:40Speaker 7: So I went back out to the point of the
- 33:41Speaker 7: ridge and sat for the evening. And I was sitting
- 33:45Speaker 7: there and I'm just like, there's not a deer coming
- 33:47Speaker 7: in here. You know, you just get that feeling of
- 33:49Speaker 7: like you're just sitting here just to sit here. And
- 33:53Speaker 7: I was like, I need to go back to that bowl.
- 33:55Speaker 7: And I'm like, I knew I already kind of blew
- 33:57Speaker 7: it up two and a half three hours before that.
- 34:01Speaker 7: But I mean, they're always getting wind of things that
- 34:05Speaker 7: are danger It doesn't mean they're.
- 34:06Speaker 6: Gonna run or not do anything.
- 34:08Speaker 7: I haven't been there in a while, so I snuck
- 34:10Speaker 7: back in there before last night, and uh, the biggest
- 34:15Speaker 7: year that I had seen in the area came out
- 34:17Speaker 7: of that thicket and walked into fifty yards for me,
- 34:20Speaker 7: where I shot them with the with the muzzloader.
- 34:22Speaker 1: But yeah, there's a lot of a lot of good
- 34:24Speaker 1: lessons in there. You find the spot in the spot,
- 34:27Speaker 1: I guess, you know, yeah, no, that's really.
- 34:31Speaker 6: It's right, And I was.
- 34:33Speaker 7: It was the last day I had to hunt, so
- 34:35Speaker 7: I was like kind of trying to push the envelope
- 34:37Speaker 7: a little bit and be a little more aggressive with
- 34:40Speaker 7: it instead of just you know, sitting there all day.
- 34:43Speaker 7: But that would have been the right move once I
- 34:45Speaker 7: saw those bucks in there, like all right, I found
- 34:47Speaker 7: the concentration of the year where they feel good.
- 34:50Speaker 6: Maybe I should just sit here the rest of the day.
- 34:52Speaker 7: But the whole the whole point, and you know, even
- 34:55Speaker 7: telling that story is I think when it comes to
- 34:57Speaker 7: late season, something that I've been hunting of the last
- 35:02Speaker 7: four or five years is and when you're in big Timber,
- 35:06Speaker 7: not a lot of ads finding that food, but also
- 35:08Speaker 7: that security and browse cover that's all in that one spot.
- 35:12Speaker 7: Being able to decipher the sign between nighttime and daytime,
- 35:17Speaker 7: and especially when you don't have cameras to run or
- 35:19Speaker 7: you're not using cameras in there, it's it's kind of
- 35:23Speaker 7: feeling it out a little bit.
- 35:25Speaker 1: Yeah, And so you know, looking here for the next
- 35:27Speaker 1: seven days, you call it seventeenth to Christmas Eve. For
- 35:32Speaker 1: someone that is going to be able to hunt this
- 35:34Speaker 1: weekend or maybe they have, you know, the work schedule
- 35:37Speaker 1: a little bit is a little bit lighter over the
- 35:40Speaker 1: next seven days, what would you tell them to focus
- 35:42Speaker 1: on kind of no matter where they're at in the country.
- 35:47Speaker 7: Yeah, so personally, like it depends. I'm going to say
- 35:50Speaker 7: one thing, It depends a little bit. Honestly, No, it
- 35:53Speaker 7: doesn't depend. But I do like the fact that there
- 35:56Speaker 7: is a little bit of a warm up coming. It
- 35:58Speaker 7: seems like in late season when you have you know,
- 36:00Speaker 7: single degree temps depending on where you're at, Like for
- 36:03Speaker 7: us here, that's not typical this time of year, and
- 36:07Speaker 7: you know, we usually have snow on the ground, maybe
- 36:09Speaker 7: a little colder.
- 36:10Speaker 6: But really cold temps.
- 36:12Speaker 7: It it almost seems like it not locks them down,
- 36:16Speaker 7: but they're conserving their energy a little bit more. But
- 36:19Speaker 7: once you get some warm up, you get some mid
- 36:21Speaker 7: thirties into that forty degree a little bit, it feels
- 36:24Speaker 7: like in some some ways out it feels like a
- 36:27Speaker 7: heat wave to it, and it almost seems like those
- 36:30Speaker 7: deer get up and are feeding more earlier moving around.
- 36:34Speaker 7: So if that's happening in your area, definitely take advantage
- 36:37Speaker 7: of it. But I mean, food, you hear it all
- 36:40Speaker 7: the time when it comes to late season, doesn't matter
- 36:41Speaker 7: if you're an ad country where you're at, food is
- 36:44Speaker 7: definitely king in a lot of that spot. But definitely
- 36:47Speaker 7: don't overlook the cover aspect of it. And covers easier
- 36:51Speaker 7: to find now with the leaves being off the trees,
- 36:54Speaker 7: it's a little more concentrated. So that's that's what I
- 36:57Speaker 7: would look at to find an area to go to.
- 37:01Speaker 1: No, that's great now, scale one to ten, one being
- 37:05Speaker 1: one of the worst weeks of the year, ten being
- 37:07Speaker 1: one of the best weeks of the year over the
- 37:09Speaker 1: next seven days December seventeenth of the twenty fourth. Where
- 37:12Speaker 1: do you put it for you yourself? If you're going
- 37:14Speaker 1: to be able to get out and go to West Virginia.
- 37:16Speaker 6: Or something, Yeah, I am not going to be able to.
- 37:20Speaker 6: But how I would.
- 37:21Speaker 7: Put it is I'd probably give it a seven. I
- 37:27Speaker 7: would rank it higher, but in most of these states
- 37:30Speaker 7: here gun season had just closed, so that does add
- 37:33Speaker 7: a little bit more on the pressure aspect of it.
- 37:37Speaker 7: So yeah, I would put it at seven.
- 37:40Speaker 6: All right.
- 37:41Speaker 1: And if people want to tune into your podcast and
- 37:44Speaker 1: follow along for the remainder of the season, or maybe
