- 5:08headlines. Back to new.
- 5:09Cheers dipam, thank you very much.
- 5:11We're going to avoid football talk tonight.
- 5:13Aaron's decided that Aaron Morrell is race director of the
- 5:17Great Eastern Run and he's dictated that there'll be no
- 5:19football talk after Norwich City's Derby defeat last week
- 5:22and Posh not doing great themselves either.
- 5:24So let's crack on. Tonight you are listening to the
- 5:27PCR Sports Show and we're going to be talking all things Great
- 5:30Eastern Run this evening with the aforementioned Aaron
- 5:33Morrell, who's the race director.
- 5:35And then we've got Emily Griggs joining us from Warrington
- 5:37Joggers, who's running her first half marathon, and Caroline
- 5:41Brooks, who normally talks football, but tonight she'll be
- 5:43talking running, who's going to be running the Anna's Hope 5K
- 5:47Fun Run on Sunday. So before we go to a break in
- 5:51about 90 seconds, Aaron, give me one word as to how you're
- 5:54feeling ahead of Sunday so far. One or two words I.
- 5:58Think. Probably excited, Yeah, work for
- 6:01this goes in all year round. Obviously it's our fourth year
- 6:03now delivering the the APG great instant run, it's good running
- 6:06event. So yeah, excited to see it all
- 6:08come to fruition on Sunday morning.
- 6:10Yeah, Caroline, how you feeling? I'm.
- 6:12Actually excited. It's my first one.
- 6:15I've been doing it since May, so yeah, I'm really looking forward
- 6:20to it. It's strangely enough.
- 6:22Emily, come on in, how you feeling?
- 6:24I would say I'm nervous. I'm sure that's only fair.
- 6:30Yeah, I think obviously not knowing what to expect at the
- 6:32moment because obviously I've never entered a race.
- 6:34It's my first ever race. But also like the other two,
- 6:37very excited to do my first race and obviously to do it in the
- 6:40hometown of Peterborough is very exciting.
- 6:43Indeed, indeed. Right, we're gonna, we've got a
- 6:45few more seconds before we need to go to a break.
- 6:47But Aaron, the medal's just been released as well, hasn't it?
- 6:50Online. So tell people where they can
- 6:53see an advance preview of the medal.
- 6:56Yeah, sure. So head to the Great Eastern Run
- 6:58official socials and good running events.
- 7:00So at Great Eastern Run and at good running events we've done a
- 7:03medal reveal and this year's medal features the the iconic
- 7:06Lido building which obviously the course of course the race
- 7:09starts and finishes in front of. Brilliant stuff.
- 7:12And runners also have the option to you purchased T-shirts and
- 7:16hoodies this year as well. I think I noticed as well.
- 7:18Absolutely. So they've got the same design
- 7:19on those as well, very similar to the medal.
- 7:21So obviously to be able to have the the commemorative
- 7:24merchandise from this year's event as.
- 7:25Well, OK, hoodie's slightly different, isn't it?
- 7:27I don't think we don't know Hoodie before, have we?
- 7:29First time. The first time.
- 7:30So yes, it's been in high demand, but we introduced it for
- 7:33our other races and different, different colours and different
- 7:35designs. So yeah, we've been asked
- 7:37repeatedly for them. So we've listened to the
- 7:40feedback. Brilliant stuff, right?
- 7:41We'll be back with Aaron, Caroline and Emily after these
- 7:44messages, playing the greatest songs of all time for
- 7:49Peterborough Peterborough PCR FM this November, prepared to

- 9:32You're listening to PCR sports. Good evening.
- 9:45Welcome back to the PCR Sports Show here on PCRFM.
- 9:49Thank you for joining us this evening and we're talking all
- 9:52things Great Eastern Run this evening.
- 9:54The event is back this Sunday the 12th of October and we've
- 10:00got some really positive news about sign ups.
- 10:02Registrations numbers are looking really encouraging and
- 10:07we've got Aaron Morrell, race Director from the organisers
- 10:10Good Running Events with us this evening.
- 10:13Just to elaborate a little bit more on all those numbers.
- 10:15I mean, it's a huge increase what you've told me, but let the
- 10:17listeners know. Yeah.
- 10:18So we're we're looking at about 50% increase on this year's
- 10:21numbers. So obviously much, much larger
- 10:24event than than normal. We haven't had a year yet where
- 10:27numbers of regressed or stay stable.
- 10:28We've had an increase year on year from when we took over as
- 10:32good running. And that was in 2020. 2 So yeah,
- 10:35fourth year now really good, good increase and and yeah, 5700
- 10:40that we've got registered in the half marathon and almost 1000 in
- 10:43the 5K. So so yeah, really, really
- 10:45strong numbers. And yeah, obviously looking good
- 10:48for for obviously a really strong crowd that are going to
- 10:50be coming out on Sunday morning. That's phenomenal numbers, isn't
- 10:53it? A 50% increase.
- 10:54Exactly. It's the largest Great Eastern
- 10:56ever and obviously as long as it's taken place.
- 10:57So, yeah, obviously obviously a few good years now that
- 11:00obviously since the events return in 2022, as we said, you
- 11:04know, good events year on year and, and, and a really strong
- 11:06contingent travelling to Peterborough also to take part
- 11:09this year. So obviously a massive tick in
- 11:11the box in terms of boosting the local economy, tourism and and
- 11:15that whole piece. When you say travelling, yeah,
- 11:18are we talking people are coming from further afield this year
- 11:20then with that increase in numbers?
- 11:22Definitely a really strong interest as a whole in terms of
- 11:25mass events, particularly city centre events that's been seen
- 11:28across the industry. But in case a point would be 48%
- 11:32of this year's runners travelling from outside of a non
- 11:36PE post code. And obviously that for the the
- 11:39length and breadth that that covers as far far as it does,
- 11:42you're really strong number of runners that are travelling to
- 11:45Peterborough to take part this weekend.
- 11:47So they're coming from Lane potentially.
- 11:48Lincoln Ng Nottinghamshire Yeah, Bedfordshire, Luton post code
- 11:54for example, I think north. Scotland, Plymouth, some from
- 11:57abroad also that when you're looking through the data and
- 11:59seeing you know exactly how far the runners are travelling for
- 12:01this Sunday. And bearing in mind the PE post
- 12:03code stretches all the way from effectively Skegness all the way
- 12:07down to Huntingdon, out towards Wisbech and a little bit further
- 12:11West of Peterborough, 48% of runners are coming from outside
- 12:14of that catchment area to our city on Sunday.
- 12:16Exactly. It's really quite something
- 12:18really, really surprising when obviously we're drilling down
- 12:19into the data a few months ago and CSC and obviously the, you
- 12:22know, the, that how many runners are actually travelling from
- 12:25much further afield And obviously, you know, massive
- 12:28for, for Peterborough in the local area that, you know, a
- 12:30really strong contingent travelling in this weekend.
- 12:32Yeah, positive for hotels. Yeah, coffee shops, restaurants,
- 12:37the local economy, but they're not just coming on their own.
- 12:39Potentially they're bringing their family and friends with
- 12:41them as well. Yeah, we're expecting over over
- 12:4410,000 in the event village on on Sunday morning at its peak
- 12:46between the the 5K finishing and the half marathon starting.
- 12:49That's like the peak point in the event village for obviously
- 12:51when everybody's there, you know, seeing the family and
- 12:54friends finish the the 5K and obviously there to see off their
- 12:57their loved ones for the start of the half marathon.
- 12:59So yeah, all being well, Cathedral Square should be
- 13:01bustling on on Sunday after after the race, all being well.
- 13:05Yeah, Cathedral Square, Central Park, that sort of city centre
- 13:10area is really going to get a boost from this event on Sunday
- 13:12it. Really will do.
- 13:13And it's, it's, it's something that obviously we've been
- 13:15working a long time to be able to, to build the race, the race
- 13:17to this level. You know, from, from, from the
- 13:19days of speaking with, with the councillors at the time,
- 13:21Councillor Steve Allen and, and Councillor John Howard to, to
- 13:23bring back this race. And and obviously under good
- 13:25running and, and obviously the new organisers, you know,
- 13:29building to, to get the race eventually to this sort of size
- 13:31and and even bigger in the future.
- 13:33Yeah, Emily, Caroline, Caroline, you're going to be quite a part
- 13:38of something huge on Sunday. I didn't.
- 13:40Realise it was that big to. Be honest, has that made you a
- 13:43bit more nervous perhaps or just excited for it?
- 13:46For me, it's a it's a personal thing that I wanted to do this.
- 13:50So you're doing the 5K fun run. 5K So as you know, Neil, I
- 13:54started it in January and tried the Couch to 5K and didn't
- 13:57succeed. And then you mentioned that a
- 14:00local jogging group was obviously starting it again in
- 14:02May, so I went for it. And you've dragged me a few
- 14:05times round Fairy Meadows, but I'm now.
- 14:07Don't blame me. I'm now a nan, I've got a
- 14:11beautiful 10 week old granddaughter and obviously, you
- 14:14know, we all know what babies are like running around and I
- 14:17wanted to do something for myself and an incentive was my
- 14:23son. Aidan works for Youth Dreams
- 14:25Project, a local company in Peterborough that do PE in
- 14:29schools, out of school clubs. They've got an October half term
- 14:32camp coming up and obviously you know the equipment that they
- 14:36need for the coaches as well as obviously the the kids.
- 14:39It's a massive organization. They look after children as well
- 14:42that are less fortunate than than some people.
- 14:45So I thought why not go full hog and actually make myself do it.
- 14:49So for me, yeah, 5 Ki feel very bit silly with like Emily
- 14:54running the half marathon. But for me personally, my age,
- 14:57this is AI. Never ever thought that I'd be
- 14:59able to do this. I will say running is very
- 15:01individual, it's a personal thing, so please don't compare
- 15:04yourself to somebody doing a 10K half marathon or a marathon,
- 15:08whatever it may. Be I hadn't, you know, it was
- 15:10personal reasons really, and to to do something, you know, for
- 15:15for me and just to get myself out there.
- 15:18And I'm very pleased of the amount of money that I've raised
- 15:21for YDP. And you know, Luke is going to
- 15:23be putting it to good use. Perfect.
- 15:25So yeah, very happy with that. Brilliant.
- 15:28Emily, how are you? How are you feeling going to be
- 15:31part of a 5700 runners taking part in the half marathon for
- 15:36your first ever race? Yeah.
- 15:37No idea it was that big when you were talking about those numbers
- 15:40and the increase. It's amazing to see how many
- 15:41people are coming along and especially from outside of
- 15:43Peterborough. It's really, it's really nice to
- 15:46see how many people get together, like in running.
- 15:48I never knew how big and how many runners there are until I
- 15:50actually started to be honest and making all the friends.
- 15:54Obviously running for Warrington joggers has been really
- 15:57supportive of me and it's made me look at a community now where
- 16:01runners really are so friendly. So nice to be part of something
- 16:05so big and so friendly. It's been nice to make those
- 16:08connections, yeah. And just being part of being a
- 16:12runner and being part of that sort of runners community has
- 16:14been such fun. And how did that journey start
- 16:16for you then, to get to this point hours away from your first
- 16:20half marathon? I've always liked running but
- 16:24I've never taken it seriously. So whenever I felt like I could
- 16:27go for a run, I just went for a run and I just went for how ever
- 16:31long I could go for. And then I come home and then I
- 16:35started taking it seriously sort of beginning of this year,
- 16:38obviously supporting Endometriosis UK as my charity
- 16:42for the half marathon on Sunday and that charity is very close
- 16:46to me. I was actually diagnosed with
- 16:48endometriosis at the beginning of this year and going through
- 16:51that recovery, spreading that awareness, I then wanted to
- 16:56carry on that and resume my recovery and my support network.
- 17:01And that's where I thought running and being part of that
- 17:03big community, I could then really increase that awareness
- 17:06around endometriosis and start running for a charity.
- 17:10And obviously I really enjoy running, so it's nice to have
- 17:13that connection. Yeah, it's best of both worlds,
- 17:16isn't it? There, from that perspective,
- 17:17Aaron, we're talking about the large numbers there.
- 17:19But no, Caroline and Emily have both mentioned causes close to
- 17:23them that they're raising money from.
- 17:25And from a charity perspective, this event you've mentioned
- 17:28figures in previous years, but again, this is going to be
- 17:30bigger and better surely? It, it will be obviously for
- 17:33the, for the increase in, in numbers over the previous years,
- 17:36you're always looking at around the quarter of £1,000,000 worth
- 17:39of charity fundraising. Because obviously while we've
- 17:42got a portfolio of official charity partners, obviously the
- 17:44vast majority of them local, like Savannah's hopes to ride a
- 17:47little miracles. I, I could go on and on in terms
- 17:50of the names, but exactly as Emily says, it's, it's like
- 17:53endometriosis UK. There's so there's hundreds of
- 17:55charities that will be supported this weekend.
- 17:58That you won't necessarily know about.
- 18:00That obviously for you, you know that for the the causes that are
- 18:03close to to everybody's hearts that are taking part.
- 18:05Yeah, it makes it more than running then, doesn't it?
- 18:08It makes it a real community feel to that event as well.
- 18:12Yeah, sorry. I've just taken aback by the
- 18:15figures. First of all, the number of
- 18:17people that are coming from outside of the PE post code,
- 18:20which is only a boost for Peterborough as a city and
- 18:24putting it on it on the map in terms of running destination
- 18:26come October. It, it really hasn't every, you
- 18:29know, every year, obviously coming in and previewing the
- 18:31race and actually, you know, it's like obviously the story
- 18:34that I've always mentioned previously, you know, growing it
- 18:37and, and obviously bringing as many people into Peterborough is
- 18:39now, you know, really exciting to see that come to fruition,
- 18:41obviously this weekend and, and you, you know, showcasing the
- 18:44fabulous city that this is. Yeah, Emily, you've got family
- 18:48friends joining you on Sunday. Oh gosh yeah, my mum is my
- 18:52biggest support and I think she's dragged along the whole
- 18:55family to come and watch. Has she got a placard or
- 18:57anything? We'd go Emily on it.
- 18:58Probably. So yes, I've got my mum, my dad,
- 19:02I've got two brothers, two sisters, I think some nieces and
- 19:05nephews are coming. My boyfriends come in to
- 19:07support. So yes, that's going to be a big
- 19:09crowd of them, so hopefully I can spot them somewhere.
- 19:11Big entourage following. Yeah, yeah.
- 19:14And Aaron just coming back in there in terms of spotting
- 19:16family recommendations on where people could potentially stand
- 19:20and, you know, watch their loved ones take on these races.
- 19:23Yeah, sure. So Bishops Rd. is is the main
- 19:25start finish. It's like the main event hub.
- 19:27So the event village is on embankment and obviously the
- 19:30start finish in front of the Lido on Bishops Rd.
- 19:33A lot of people do head to Cathedral Square.
- 19:35So obviously when you've got the, the left turn for both the
- 19:375K and the half marathon outside of Starbucks is early in both,
- 19:42both of those distances and late in both those distances as well.
- 19:45So 4 1/2 K and 12 1/2 miles for the half marathon for for both
- 19:51of those points. So it's it's a good early and
- 19:53late spot where people have only got to move a few metres but
- 19:55they'll get an opportunity to see their their loved ones
- 19:58twice. Brilliant.
- 19:58Caroline, You're just talking about your granddaughter there.
- 20:01Yeah. She'll be out there supporting
- 20:02you on Sunday morning only. 10 weeks old depends on sleep
- 20:07patterns yeah hubby and my son and his girlfriend and my
- 20:11daughter and maybe her husband obviously baby depending.
- 20:14So yeah it'll be I'm really looking forward to it and yes
- 20:18I've got had tremendous support actually like friends, family,
- 20:21they've all donated. I never actually expected to
- 20:24raise what I did and. What are you up to at the
- 20:27moment? I'm up to 440 lbs and I, you
- 20:31know, I never, I, I set first of all 100 and then I got quite a
- 20:35big donation. And so then I moved it to 200
- 20:39and I thought, wow, even if I get £200, but to actually, to be
- 20:42able to think that, you know, people have taken their time and
- 20:46actually spent money on this is, is just amazing.
- 20:49I never thought that I'd get £400.
- 20:52You'll, you'll, you'll smash it even more once you've got that
- 20:55medal in your hands, you'll find.
- 20:57Yeah, I'm really enjoying it. And, you know, I've met, like
- 21:00Emily said, you know, a few people that they really do
- 21:04support. And every time we go down Fairy
- 21:06Meadows, like the support that you get down there and just
- 21:09finishing, you know, I've gone from running it.
- 21:11Well, actually walking it obviously, as you know, Nilash
- 21:13probably what, two or three years ago and I was doing it in
- 21:17an hour and then I started running it with yourself and a
- 21:20couple of others and got to 43 minutes.
- 21:21And the other week I did do just under 35 minutes.
- 21:26So I, you know, I have, hopefully I've got it in me for,
- 21:30for Sunday, but we'll see. But yeah, I'm, I've, I can't
- 21:34believe I've sort of even entered into.
- 21:35It to be honest. Emily, you're feeling similar
- 21:38there that you've got to this point and.
- 21:41Yeah, I think the training's been tough.
- 21:43Yeah, I think as a beginner and a new runner and then taking on
- 21:471/2 marathon as my first ever race too, it's quite a lot.
- 21:51But I, I feel ready. I feel like the support network
- 21:55and being part of Wellington joggers like you guys going to
- 21:59Fairy Meadows doing the park runs has been really fun.
- 22:02And everyone's always said about the support that you have around
- 22:07the run on the on the half marathon and taking part and
- 22:10everyone sort of cheering everyone on.
- 22:12So I feel like that's gonna keep me going.
- 22:13Brilliant. You've got your number there in
- 22:14front. If you haven't you What number
- 22:15are you gonna be on Sunday? I AM 4470.
- 22:18OK, so if you see 4470, that is Emily Griggs and give her a
- 22:23large cheer. Caroline, what's your fun run
- 22:25number? 7611.
- 22:27Brilliant. OK, so if you see Caroline, she
- 22:29is 7611 and she's taking part in the Anna's Hope 5K Fun Run, and
- 22:34Emily is 4470 in the Great Eastern Run half Marathon
- 22:39itself, right? We're going to take another
- 22:41short break with some messages and we'll be back with Aaron,

- 25:10You are listening to the PCR Sports Show, and tonight we're
- 25:13all about the Great Eastern Run, which is taking place in our
- 25:16city of Peterborough this Sunday morning.
- 25:20We've got over 5700 runners taking part in the half marathon
- 25:25and we've got around 1000 mark in the Anna's Hope 5K Fun Run.
- 25:29And we've got Emily, who's running her first ever half
- 25:33marathon in the studio with us, and Caroline Brooks, who's
- 25:36taking on the Anna's Hope 5K Fun Run, and also Aaron Morrell.
- 25:40We're pleased he's been able to get himself away from the Race
- 25:44Village this evening and spend just an hour with us from good
- 25:50running events. Race Director, Is this a bit of
- 25:53a break for you? A.
- 25:54Little bit yeah, it's an hour away for for the Madness, but
- 25:57we'll we'll be all good on. That chance to have a chance to
- 26:00have a bite to eat and a drink hopefully as well.
- 26:02Exactly, and obviously it's always good to have a little bit
- 26:04of, of chill time as well and amongst all of the, the madness
- 26:06of getting everything in together, but it's, it's all
- 26:08worth it when everybody has a, a, a good morning and afternoon
- 26:11on Sunday. Yeah, how you feeling, how are,
- 26:13how is prep on the last couple of days?
- 26:15Yeah, it's, it's, it's been good.
- 26:16We're we're in a good place event village build started on
- 26:20Wednesday because obviously that's obviously the largest
- 26:23area, which is like the event hub, if you like on embankment.
- 26:26And then we'll start a lot more of the on route stuff across
- 26:28tomorrow and over Saturday night overnight.
- 26:30So everything is ready for when closures are live and we start
- 26:33the race on Sunday morning. How much sleep have you had?
- 26:36I think last night, I think it was just over 2 hours.
- 26:39It's, it's, yeah, it's, it's a long week.
- 26:41But as you say that the prep goes into this all year round.
- 26:44But it's a huge undertaking for, for obviously so many areas to,
- 26:48to obviously, you know, pull an event this scale together.
- 26:51It's a huge amount of work. And volunteers play a huge part
- 26:55in that. Yeah, really do.
- 26:57Over 600 volunteers across volunteering on the race route,
- 27:00obviously for the the charity stands and the cheer points at
- 27:03the embankment, taking the, you know, the bags, baggage drop,
- 27:06registration merchandise, T-shirts at the charity stands
- 27:10as well. So yeah, it isn't just the on,
- 27:12you know, the traffic management teams and the stewarding, it's
- 27:14the volunteers cheering everybody along and and
- 27:16supporting every step of of the runners journeys on Sunday
- 27:19morning. And this journey would have
- 27:20started months ago, perhaps even the day after last year's event.
- 27:23Yeah, for everybody, for us as organisers, in terms of the
- 27:25planning, obviously look at looking at everything last year
- 27:27which got the positive feedback and areas which we might want to
- 27:30obviously have a little bit of a tweak on in terms of race route.
- 27:32So for example, this year's half marathon has had a a couple of
- 27:35tweaks. We're going through Central Park
- 27:37in the opposite direction this year.
- 27:39So it removes A crossover so that without getting into too
- 27:42many logistics, it's where the the lead runner and the tail
- 27:44runner actually meet. So we've we've tweaked that as
- 27:47well as only using one of the roads in Doggthorpe in a
- 27:49northbound directions. We're going to be passing in
- 27:51front of Doggthorpe Fire Station this year as well, just to be
- 27:54able to separate for the larger amount of.
- 27:56Runners that we're expecting, right Yeah, because normally we
- 27:59do out and back along dogs Fire station, yeah you'd be going
- 28:02into. Lawn Ave. northbound only and
- 28:04then Dogfoot Fire Station on the southbound.
- 28:05OK. A few little tweaks like that,
- 28:08which are quite subtle, but it's still to be able to get the
- 28:10necessary permissions because obviously, like the fire, fire
- 28:12service and cool blue light access across anywhere across
- 28:15the race route is obviously something we always permit.
- 28:18So even though the roads are closed legally, obviously we
- 28:20still have blue light access. But things like that you don't
- 28:22necessarily think of when putting together an event like
- 28:25this is, yeah, huge undertaking. And the jewel in the crowd crown
- 28:29must be running through the cathedral grounds.
- 28:32Yeah. Absolutely, Really, really
- 28:34pleased to obviously get get that added into the sort of race
- 28:36for the first time ever in 2023. And Paul and all of the team at
- 28:40Peterborough Cathedral all the way through there, various
- 28:42departments are incredibly supportive of, of of this event.
- 28:45And yeah, we're grateful to to them as well as local
- 28:48authorities, the council, sponsors and partners, everybody
- 28:51involved in in supporting this race.
- 28:53Paul's on stage, isn't he? I hear.
- 28:55Paul is absolutely. So this is Paul Stainton.
- 28:57He's on the Paul Stainton will be on the event stage and we've
- 29:00got Mark who's our start finish line commentator calling out all
- 29:05of the the runners names as they as they start and finish the
- 29:07race. So yeah, Paul will be up there
- 29:09with the mic on on Sunday morning.
- 29:12With the race route, Aaron, obviously you you make tweaks
- 29:15every year for the right reasons obviously.
- 29:17Is that something you kind of take feedback from the runners
- 29:20or how does that come about? Because ultimately you're going
- 29:22to get to a, to a, to a route that's going to be perfect,
- 29:24isn't it? Aren't you?
- 29:25Really, I'd hope that this year would be the year because even
- 29:28just a little bit of a change. Then Tony King, who's always
- 29:31measures all of our, our race routes.
- 29:33He always has to go out on his bicycle, make sure we get to
- 29:35the, the correct numbers, obviously for the for the
- 29:37correct distances. But hopefully this will be be
- 29:39the the last weeks. But it's, it's everything all
- 29:40involved. Obviously what we like and, and
- 29:43maybe need to tweak as organisers based on the feedback
- 29:45from the runners, the volunteers, the local authority,
- 29:47obviously the highways teams, national highways, blue light
- 29:51partners, police, fire, ambulance.
- 29:53Obviously there's, there's a huge amount of obviously
- 29:55debriefing that we do straight after as soon as we get to
- 29:58Monday morning. So yeah, we, we take into
- 30:00account all of that as well as resident feedback as well.
- 30:03Obviously, you know, you've got kind of like the footprint in
- 30:05terms of the areas that it uses past and dogs for Warrington,
- 30:09very, very popular, obviously with runners because it's very,
- 30:12very flat. So while obviously it's great
- 30:14for the runners and for for popular for them, but obviously
- 30:16we're incredibly thankful to the residents as well that have a
- 30:19few hours on Sunday morning when they need to adapt their plans
- 30:21if they need to leave for lunch with family at midday and it's
- 30:24banks slap in the middle of the the road closures.
- 30:26So yeah, everything in terms of runners, feedback, residents,
- 30:30cancel, the list goes. On, I guess sort of terrain
- 30:32surface as well, doesn't it? You make sure roads are safe in
- 30:35terms of the condition of them, making sure the runners are on
- 30:38on as most comfortable terrain as possible while they're doing
- 30:41the race as well. Definitely, obviously you know,
- 30:43it's really flat and it's all Rd. based 100% obviously for our
- 30:47for our England athletics permits.
- 30:48Then obviously that's something that we have to abide by anyway.
- 30:51But but yeah, obviously boy, we'll get feedback and say, oh,
- 30:53what Town Bridge and go down to Fairy Meadows and change it each
- 30:57year then. Yeah, that's an incredible
- 30:59amount of work just to be able to say, how can you not go that
- 31:00way instead? So yeah, obviously there's, you
- 31:03know, there's, there's good reasons as to why obviously we
- 31:05use the areas that we do, you know, for, in terms of logistics
- 31:08and obviously mainly for for runner experience on Sunday.
- 31:11To put on an event like this, we've talked about volunteers
- 31:14there but talked about the running clubs in this city.
- 31:17You said it was quite unique in terms of the way the running
- 31:19clubs come together through the Greater Peterborough Athletics
- 31:22Network. Their support must be invaluable
- 31:25to you. It really is through through the
- 31:27year obviously in terms terms of obviously wherever race plans
- 31:29are obviously keeping abreast of of changes each year that
- 31:32obviously we say about and what what you know the year's plans
- 31:35are looking like. We have regular meetings and,
- 31:37and, and you know, G Pan have been ever since day one meeting
- 31:40all of the all of the guys when we took the race over that have
- 31:42been incredibly supportive. So, so a massive shout out to to
- 31:46obviously everyone involved there to, to support the race in
- 31:49in as much as obviously through the year as well as on race day
- 31:52with the the large amount of volunteers that obviously they
- 31:54they help support with. In as well as the training
- 31:57sessions as well from a runners perspective.
- 31:59Exactly. So Tim, Tim does an incredible
- 32:01amount of work with the the Pacers to be able to get us a
- 32:04team of 24 paces on Sunday morning to get everybody through
- 32:07to their their desired times and making sure that obviously they
- 32:10come into their sub 145 or the sub two hours.
- 32:13That obviously the time that they're going for one hour 30
- 32:17through to two hours 45. I think off the top of my head,
- 32:20as well as leading the training sessions, which obviously the
- 32:23experience of here. So yeah, obviously the seven get
- 32:26fit for the greatest in training sessions that we have starting
- 32:29in the middle of July, and the last one took place for this
- 32:32year's half marathon, the Wednesday just gone.
- 32:34Yeah, Emily, you've taken part in some of those as well,
- 32:36haven't you? Yes, The last few I've done a
- 32:39few of the the get fits and to be fair, they're probably one of
- 32:42the best things that I've done leading up to the half marathon
- 32:46preparation wise and getting ready and meeting people.
- 32:50Meeting the Pacers were really beneficial for me, just to see
- 32:53them, see who I'm looking for on the race, because obviously it's
- 32:56going to be very busy. So yeah, just to meet people,
- 32:59see who's doing it, make friends with people who are doing the
- 33:02same pace as you, meet your paces and get together for a
- 33:05nice run. Every other Wednesday night was
- 33:08been, yeah, really good fun and very beneficial for me as a
- 33:11beginner. Brilliant stuff.
- 33:12You mentioned the paces there. Yes.
- 33:17Divulge what sort of time you'd like to run or at this stage
- 33:20you'd keeping it under wraps. Nobody's listening, don't worry.
- 33:24So I've been pacing for the two hours.
- 33:27That's my goal. Whether I get it or not, I don't
- 33:29know. But I feel everyone's always
- 33:32said the crowd really does get behind you and keeps you going.
- 33:36So hopefully that will get me the two hours.
- 33:38But also I think just finishing for me is going to be a massive
- 33:43achievement. Obviously my first ever half
- 33:45marathon, so I think getting that medal is going to be the
- 33:48best thing for me and what I'm going for.
- 33:50Brilliant stuff, Caroline. That crowd support on Sunday can
- 33:54carry you around as well, yeah. Definitely.
- 33:56I think that some of that's how I've got quick around Fairy
- 33:58Meadows to be honest, because everybody is so supportive.
- 34:01Like you've always got the ones that do it in 15 or 20 minutes.
- 34:04But I'm now sort of going past people, which I never thought
- 34:09was possible, you know, but to see them sort of like at the end
- 34:13as as well, like the people that actually finish the race before
- 34:16you, they often stop and they cheer you on.
- 34:18And, and I actually think that for me has been absolutely
- 34:22fantastic. And and yeah, like Emily said,
- 34:24it's it's a different environment for me.
- 34:26I never thought I'd be able to do this sort of thing or even
- 34:29take part in something like this.
- 34:31So, but what Fairy Meadows has given me, I've made different,
- 34:36you know, friends, acquaintances and, and things like that, but
- 34:39it is just everybody cheering you on.
- 34:41And like I said, my family and, and friends have been so
- 34:43supportive and, you know, and, and donated money that I never
- 34:47thought that I'd see those donations.
- 34:48So the whole running network, I think is just fantastic.
- 34:52And I've met people, I've been, I've joined a couple of groups.
- 34:55I went out on Tuesday night and but everybody is just, you'll do
- 34:59it, you'll get there and doesn't matter.
- 35:00Like you said, if you're running a mile or 10 miles, whatever
- 35:03you're doing. I think it's just fantastic that
- 35:05people can actually come together and enjoy something
- 35:08like this. Yeah, Aaron, I mean, hearing
- 35:11Emily and Caroline, there must be a fillip for you in terms of
- 35:15that. You know, that's the catalyst,
- 35:17isn't it? They've signed up for these
- 35:18events and they've spent their time, effort, money to take part
- 35:25in this event and they're really looking forward to it.
- 35:27Yeah, absolutely. It's it's obviously pride to be
- 35:29able to provide that catalyst obviously in terms of of Sunday
- 35:32and and obviously having that that grounding glory.
- 35:34But it is exactly that. It's just just the the obviously
- 35:37the the end and obviously the the goal that have been builded
- 35:39towards obviously all of the you know, the hard miles and all of
- 35:41the efforts obviously got gone in for the weeks and months that
- 35:44everybody's been training. So it's, you know, it's, it's
- 35:46just the, the glory Mars on Sunday morning.
- 35:48It certainly is certainly is. Aaron, just staying with you for
- 35:52a moment. In terms of the, you talked
- 35:54about the logistical side of this that needs to be put
- 35:57together, but you've got a lot of support from the charity
- 36:01partners and the corporate partners within the city as
- 36:03well. Yeah, definitely.
- 36:04It's obviously across the the charity partners, as say over
- 36:07over 30 different charity partners that we've got
- 36:10obviously Sue Ryder thought Paul Hospice and Anna's Hope little
- 36:13Miracles. They've been with us since the
- 36:15very beginning and we've got a lot of local charities that that
- 36:19to obviously benefit from the obviously the fundraising that
- 36:22obviously is facilitated through the race.
- 36:24Obviously the corporate support as well.
- 36:25We're incredibly grateful to AEPG for for continuing their
- 36:28title sponsorship. They've supported US ever since
- 36:30we we took over the race. Savils have have sponsored the
- 36:34team of Pacers and the water station again, since the very,
- 36:36very beginning of our Great Eastern journey.
- 36:38They've been incredibly supportive.
- 36:41But again, also back to G Pan, I mean, obviously I mentioned Tim
- 36:44from Werrington, obviously on the the training sessions and
- 36:47the Pacers side, but also with with, with Dave Richmond and
- 36:50Gary Thurgood in terms of the start and the finish volunteers,
- 36:53everybody that's volunteering on the embankment in those areas on
- 36:56on Sunday morning, they've done an incredible amount of work and
- 36:59everybody within those, those running advisory meetings that
- 37:02we have through the year. So yeah, massive thank you to
- 37:04everybody involved. Yep, bit of detail for probably
- 37:07more Emily in terms of the half marathon side I think, but more
- 37:09stations out on the route as well and they're volunteer
- 37:11manned. Yeah, absolutely.
- 37:13All volunteers. So Savils, Thorny Running Club
- 37:16and now Salt Tree Running Club used to be Salt Tree Walk to
- 37:19Run. They are three teams if you
- 37:21like, volunteers that are manning the water stations on
- 37:24the half marathon route. So we have 5 water stops in
- 37:27total and two of them are double stoppers.
- 37:29So one in the Central Park area, that's one and five.
- 37:31We have two and four with Thorny, which is at the end of
- 37:34Pastan Ridings, and then we also have the sort of guys that are
- 37:37at the start of Davis Lane in Warrington at the Crab and

- 39:55Good evening. Welcome back.
- 39:56You are listening to the PCR Sports Show here on PCR FM.
- 39:59We're here every Friday between 6:00 and 7:00 bringing you the
- 40:03latest news, Sporting News from our city of Peterborough.
- 40:08Tonight's no different. We're very much focused on the
- 40:11Great Eastern Rum, which takes place in our city on Sunday
- 40:15morning. That's a half marathon where
- 40:18you've got 5700. 700 runners signed up.
- 40:22So I put my teeth in there. Aaron, I'm still surprised with
- 40:24that number that you've mentioned to us.
- 40:26And then around 1000, taking part in the 5K Fun Run itself as
- 40:31well. And it's no mean feat putting on
- 40:34this event through the support of volunteers, charity partners,
- 40:38corporate partners and good running events who actually
- 40:42facilitate this event and it's their 4th Great Eastern Run.
- 40:46But we really need to mention Eric Winstone as well, Aaron, in
- 40:50terms of the milestone he's reaching and he's going to
- 40:54hopefully take another one off on Sunday.
- 40:56He will be and keep an eye out for him.
- 40:57He's in bib #33, so his 33rd Great Eastern run, so one of the
- 41:01ever presents. So yeah, we're looking forward
- 41:03to seeing it. Eric back at the start line and
- 41:05I think I need to catch up with him over the weekend.
- 41:07But I think he's he'll probably stay easy looking forward to it
- 41:09and in better shape this year because I think he'll know.
- 41:11He was a nurse in an injury last year, wasn't he?
- 41:13But he he managed to get it done, got it in the books and
- 41:15and keeping that record going. So yeah, well, good.
- 41:17Good on it. I mean, 33?
- 41:19What? Oh, no.
- 41:20Come Sunday afternoon, to have completed every half marathon
- 41:23that's taken place in this city, that's some going.
- 41:25Yeah, although I've certainly got a few.
- 41:27A few more grey hairs for four. Great years so.
- 41:30The planning size, yeah, 33 is incredible going and yeah, good,
- 41:33good on Eric and and obviously keeping that that run going.
- 41:36So yeah, from the the start podium that I'll be with the air
- 41:38horn on Sunday, I'll be be keeping an eye out for Eric as
- 41:40he's starting the race and finishing.
- 41:42Emily, Eric's obviously doing his 33rd.
- 41:45Yes, you're doing your first. Yeah, big difference.
- 41:51That's a long time of running and preparation and training.
- 41:55I mean I've struggled with 10 weeks leading up to this.
- 41:58Half an hour and not a long. Was it 33?
- 42:01Yeah, it'll be 33 on Sunday. 33 years. 33rd half marathon on
- 42:06Sunday. Yeah, that's a long time.
- 42:08I don't know if that will ever be me.
- 42:12Brilliant stuff. But Aaron, again, it shows, you
- 42:15know, whether it's your first one like Emily's or Eric to the
- 42:18other extent of the scale, he's going to be doing his 33rd.
- 42:21I mean, it's an event for all, isn't it?
- 42:23And we've talked about Caroline doing her first 5K.
- 42:26It really is and and obviously Eric and and many others as
- 42:29well, obviously coming back to to do the great Eastern, you
- 42:31know, year in, year out that you know, this is just such a buzz
- 42:34that you guys will get on on Sunday morning where you know
- 42:37this, this race really is unique.
- 42:38You know, you get get other 10 KS and a half marathons that you
- 42:41go, you know, go out into the countryside and you don't, you
- 42:44don't see anybody for a good couple of miles.
- 42:45But with it, you know, being so unique that it does take in such
- 42:48a wide area of, of, of the city and the city centre that, you
- 42:51know, it really is unique in terms of, of that, that you
- 42:54know, that support and that really will get you to the
- 42:56finish and why people, you know, come back time and time again.
- 42:59Yeah, Deepam. I mean, joking aside, Emily,
- 43:01obviously, as as Neil mentioned with the 33rd marathon for for
- 43:06the I forgot his name, Eric, Eric, sorry, currently call him
- 43:11Ray because of the actor Eric, he's running the state third.
- 43:15But joke aside, you know, both for both you, Caroline and
- 43:18Emily, is this the kind of start of you kind of running journey
- 43:21to to whatever degree And then do you see you see you're
- 43:24running continuing beyond this this one event.
- 43:27Yeah, I'd like to hope so. I mean, I don't plan on not
- 43:30running now. I feel like I've gone so sort of
- 43:32deep into my running career, let's say.
- 43:36It'd be a shame to stop that. And I think it's quite a big
- 43:41achievement for me. Obviously, being diagnosed with
- 43:43endometriosis at the beginning of this year, I never even
- 43:46thought I'd be able to get out of bed again.
- 43:47I mean, I was stuck. The recovery was so tough, so to
- 43:51even be here now speaking about my first ever half marathon is
- 43:54absolutely crazy. And I think I'm just going to
- 43:57carry on as much as I can and enjoy it as much as I can.
- 44:00Yeah, Yeah. Good.
- 44:03Caroline. I've absolutely loved it.
- 44:05I mean, I can't 'cause I don't quite believe that I'm doing it.
- 44:09But yeah, I agree with Emily. I want to continue running it.
- 44:13I'll be at Fairy Meadows, The Saturdays where I'm not watching
- 44:15Posh and yeah and. What's harder?
- 44:19Watching posture? Running 5K at the moment.
- 44:21Watching posture. Especially after last weekend.
- 44:25Pain lasts longer. Yeah, you know, yeah.
- 44:29So for me, I will definitely be at Fair Meadows on a on a
- 44:32Saturday morning. And I've really enjoyed the
- 44:35groups that I've joined on a Tuesday and Thursday.
- 44:37So especially, you know, I'll be running not.
- 44:42You're not running on your own, are you?
- 44:43But it's difficult to get people to come out with you running
- 44:46because we've all got busy lives.
- 44:48We all work and joining these groups.
- 44:50You know that every week there's going to be people there at
- 44:526:00. And I think that's what's kept
- 44:55me going. You know, I've been running with
- 44:57a couple of friends and it's been amazing.
- 44:59And they've, they've got me through some difficult times and
- 45:02got me faster. But for me personally, I will
- 45:05definitely continue because I think at the age I am now, I
- 45:09want to continue. I want to get fitter.
- 45:11And I'm very aware that, you know, getting older, like I
- 45:16said, I have got a granddaughter that I want to run round after.
- 45:19And it just makes me so proud that, you know, that running is
- 45:22something that I've actually started to enjoy.
- 45:24And I never ever thought that I would say that.
- 45:27Sometimes it's hard on the old knee.
- 45:29But yeah, generally I, I will definitely be continuing and
- 45:32I've, I've, I've got my session booked in for next Tuesday night
- 45:35already so. Aaron, that must be quite
- 45:38inspiring for you from from an organization perspective.
- 45:40They've got 2 ladies here entering for the first time and
- 45:43you've potentially started a legacy for them to continue in
- 45:46the sport. Yeah, something I'm personally
- 45:48really, really proud of. Obviously, you know, there's a a
- 45:50team of us that obviously put on the these events obviously not
- 45:53just for the Great Eastern, but, but all all over East Anglia and
- 45:56Berkshire as well. So, yeah, obviously for the
- 45:58amount of, of, of people that obviously, you know, have got
- 46:01involved in the events along the way and have got that much
- 46:03longer story in terms of the charity fundraising.
- 46:05Never run for the first time taking on the 1st 5K10K half
- 46:09marathon or ultra marathon that you know, that there's so many
- 46:12stories and journeys that are born from.
- 46:14This isn't just rocking up and running a 5K or a half marathon
- 46:17on a win on Sunday morning. It's, you know, there really is
- 46:20a story and a journey that everybody's going through to get
- 46:23the. Brilliant stuff, right?
- 46:25We've got a few minutes left of the show and we could talk for a
- 46:28few more hours about the Great Eastern Run because, you know,
- 46:30we're all so passionate about it and it's such a huge part of
- 46:34Peterborough itself and bringing people into the city, a huge
- 46:39number for the very first time this weekend.
- 46:42But what do the next sort of 36 hours look like for you?
- 46:4548 hours look like for you Aaron.
- 46:48Lot of work not. Too much sleep.
- 46:51But at the end of the day, as as I said earlier, the work goes
- 46:54into it all year round and it's all worth it when everybody has
- 46:57a a crack in time with us on on Sunday morning and enjoy the
- 47:00race. You know, love that medal and
- 47:02and have a fantastic story to tell through all of the training
- 47:05and and the highs and probably maybe for some, maybe with the
- 47:08lows that they'll have during the race on Sunday due to
- 47:11obviously to then come back up to that incredible high when
- 47:13they get to the finish line again.
- 47:14Yeah. Caroline, how you feeling?
- 47:16Summarise how you feeling and what what are you gonna be doing
- 47:18for the next step? There's no Peterborough United
- 47:20match tomorrow. That's.
- 47:22Probably a good thing I did tick off 2 grounds last week though,
- 47:25so me and my son went to Blackburn as well at 12:30 as
- 47:28well as then going to Bolton. So I think probably I'll need a
- 47:31weekend off of football. Yeah.
- 47:33So yeah, just looking forward to it and I'm very proud that I've
- 47:38been maybe to raise money for for Youth Dreams project.
- 47:41They are fantastic organization in Peterborough and the two
- 47:44Luke's have have built it up very, very well.
- 47:46And obviously it's my son's employers and I just think they
- 47:50do a great, it's, it's just very good what they do for young kids
- 47:57in Peterborough. Yeah, we've had Luke Killer on
- 47:59the show before. And I, I do feel that the, the
- 48:03clubs that they put on, they've got an October half term coming
- 48:05up camp, they do Christmas and they give obviously also the
- 48:09employees an opportunity as well.
- 48:11And, and I just think the what they achieve by going into the
- 48:16schools and doing PE is absolutely fantastic.
- 48:18So for me personally, like I said, my granddaughter and to,
- 48:23to do something and raise money actually that I know will be
- 48:27beneficial to a company. And I know YDP are a big
- 48:30organization, but they're only a big organization in Peterborough
- 48:34and they need all the support that they can sort of like get
- 48:37and get kids to the kids clubs because they do an amazing job
- 48:40with these kids and some kids go down a path and that they.
- 48:44Underprivileged. Yeah, underprivileged and you
- 48:45know, and coaches like my my son and the coaches that they've got
- 48:50help them through that. Yeah.
- 48:51So for me that's that's one of the main reasons why I'm looking
- 48:55forward to it. And Emily, how you feeling then?
- 48:57A few hours away now ticking by. What's your prep looking like
- 49:01tomorrow? Feet up.
- 49:02Yeah, I think probably the easiest prep I've ever done.
- 49:07I usually compete horses, so it's been a bit weird, like
- 49:10coming up to a competition, I'm usually like out making sure the
- 49:13lorries ready, obviously bathing horses, platting horses and like
- 49:17I'm running around everywhere. So now I've got a race coming up
- 49:21and it feels weird. I just have to eat past the
- 49:24drink water and sit down. That's really fun.
- 49:27I really enjoy it, but I'd do it again.
- 49:29Brilliant stuff, Aaron. Emily Caroline, thank you for
- 49:34your time this evening. Aaron, we obviously hope
- 49:37everything going off well on Saturday.
- 49:40Huge increase in numbers which is brilliant to to see and it is
- 49:43only, you know, beneficial for Peterborough as a whole as the
- 49:46city. Caroline, good luck.
- 49:49And to you? Well, we'll see you on Sunday
- 49:51morning with that medal in hand and Emily, last word with you.
- 49:56Any last minute bits of advice for first timers like you out
- 50:00there? I would say just keep going.
- 50:02I know it's tough and it gets tough, but to join Warrington
- 50:07Joggers has been probably the biggest highlight for me in my
- 50:10running career of like getting into a community and joining
- 50:14enthusiastic runners because that's what's kept me going.
- 50:17So if you're a beginner, get yourself into a club, you know,
- 50:20make friends with new runners because everyone's so lovely and
- 50:23park runs are really fun and keep going because it's tough,
- 50:27but it's worth it that after that after feeling of a run is
- 50:31what makes me get keep going. And that medal in your hand on.
- 50:34Oh yeah, the medal. Yeah, my first ever running
- 50:36medal. That will be pride of place.
- 50:39Yes, yeah, that's gonna be hung up in my room.
- 50:40I'm gonna frame it. Does that beat the rosettes from
- 50:44the venting? The rosettes.
- 50:47Brilliant stuff, right? Aaron, Emily, Caroline, thank
- 50:50you for joining us. Dipam, thank you very much for
- 50:52the headlines this evening. So if you are taking part in the
- 50:54Great Eastern Run, whether it be the half marathon or the Anna's
- 50:57Hope 5K Fun Run this weekend, we just want to wish you all the
- 51:00best. If you're fundraising, well done
- 51:02to get to this point and really just enjoy that victory lap on
- 51:06Sunday and we look forward to hearing all about it in the
- 51:09coming days and weeks. And yeah, just have a great
- 51:13weekend. And if you're out on the route,
- 51:15please do get out there and support all those runners that
- 51:18will be pounding our streets of Peterborough.
