- 0:00Hello and welcome back to Storytime with Lucky Podcast.
- 0:05Today we're going to read The Rescue Party.
- 0:09What's a perfect day for doing nothing, said Percy the park keeper.
- 0:15Percy was having a day off.
- 0:18He and some of his animal friends had brought,
- 0:24a picnic to one of their favourite places in the park.
- 0:30Percy took off his cap and made himself a sun hat by tying lots on the corners of his handkerchief.
- 0:40Then he popped himself against an old tree stump and opened his butt.
- 0:45The animals settled themselves around Percy and waited for tea.
- 0:52It was warm in the sunshine and soon everyone began to doze.
- 0:58Suddenly they were disturbed by the sound of laughter.
- 1:02Brothers and their little sister were playing a leaping game in the long grass.
- 1:09When they saw Percy, the rabbits waved.
- 1:13Hello, Percy! They were pretending to be hares. Percy chuckled and waved back
- 1:19as the rabbits went leaping away.
- 1:22The three rabbits were having a wonderful time. I can jump the longest, said one.
- 1:29I can run the fastest, said his brother. I can jump the highest,
- 1:33said the smallest rabbit.
- 1:35I can jump high into the air. Whee!
- 1:41But as the rabbit landed, to her brother's surprise, she completely disappeared.
- 1:49She had crashed right through the rotten cover of an old well.
- 1:57They began to wail. Help!
- 2:01And the ground has eaten our sister. Help, somebody help. Somebody, of course, meant Percy.
- 2:09The two rabbits ran straight to him and told them what happened.
- 2:14The other animals looked worried as Percy listened and sighed.
- 2:22There's no water in that well, he said, but it's very deep.
- 2:27He pulled on his cap and jumped to his feet.
- 2:32We'll need ropes, he said. Come on.
- 2:36Percy raced away with the animals following behind him.
- 2:41Before long, he was leaning them back again towards the old well.
- 2:46Over his shoulder, Percy carried a long row.
- 2:50Percy cleared away the rotten wood that had covered the well and peered into
- 2:55a dark hole. He couldn't see the little rabbit.
- 2:58She was perched down on a log that wedged itself halfway down the well. Hello, called Percy.
- 3:06Can you hear me? A rather cross, little voice answered. I bobbed my head.
- 3:12But are you alright? asked Percy. But are you alright? asked Percy.
- 3:17I bobbed my head, answered a cross voice again.
- 3:20We're sending down a rope.
- 3:23Hold Percy, tight and nice and tight, we'll pull you up.
- 3:27Percy lowered the rope into the well. The little rabbit wasn't quite sure what
- 3:33to do, So she tied it tightly on the log that she was stinking sitting on.
- 3:39Now heave ho said Percy.
- 3:43Percy pulled on the road, but nothing happened. Was she... was she being...
- 3:50What's she been eating? he muttered. She weighs a ton.
- 3:55He pulled... he pulled one once more.
- 3:59But still nothing happened. Percy frowned.
- 4:03All right, he said. Let's see what we can do together.
- 4:08Down in the well, the little rabbit was beginning to get used to the darkness
- 4:12As she gazed around, she noticed that there was a small opening in the wall of the well.
- 4:17I wonder where that leads to, she said. As the chopper rolled,
- 4:21the rescuers lined up behind Percy.
- 4:25Ready to pull on the rope, ready? Shared Percy.
- 4:29Hey! Something in the well moved. Keep going, said Percy. She's coming.
- 4:36The rescuers pulled on Paul, and he grunted and growled and quaffed and squeaked.
- 4:41Up came the rope as it reached the top. The rescues got a terrible surprise.
- 4:48There was no little rabbit on the end of the rope. They had pulled up from the well as...
- 4:55All they had pulled up from the well was a great big log. Well,
- 5:00I'm blessed to Percy. What happened to her?
- 5:04She's turned to a log, said the fox. "'She's at the bottom of the well!' said the squirrels.
- 5:11"'She's lost forever!' wailed the rabbit.
- 5:14"'Oh, no, I'm not!' said a little voice behind them.
- 5:18"'I'm here!' Everyone looked around in amazement. There was a back-of-the-line rescuers.
- 5:24The back-of-the-line rescuers was the little rabbit.
- 5:29"'Thought I'd help you,' she said. "'What are we doing?',
- 5:32But how did you manage to get out? Percy and the animals began to laugh.
- 5:39They laughed and laughed until they couldn't stand up. But how did you manage to get out?
- 5:44Asked Percy at last. It was easy, he said. I found a secret passage.
- 5:51It just comes out just over there.
- 5:56Well, I never, said Percy. Well, well, well.
- 6:00Which reminds me, he added.
- 6:05I must make a new cover for that old well.
- 6:09I'll do it tomorrow, said Percy, as he led the way back towards their picnic.
- 6:14After all, he said, today is my day off.
- 6:19The end, and thank you for listening.
