- 0:00Chapter 19 from the book of Jeremiah.
- 0:04Let's start it as always with a prayer and remember why we read
- 0:08Scripture. According to Two Timothy chapter
- 0:133 verse 16, all Scripture is God breathes and is useful for
- 0:18teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness so
- 0:22that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every
- 0:25good work. Dear Lord, please let the Holy
- 0:28Spirit give us this insight as we read through this chapter
- 0:32today. We ask this in Jesus name.
- 0:35So chapter 19, This is what the Lord says.
- 0:39Go and buy a clay jar from the Potter.
- 0:43Take along some of the elders of the people and of the priest,
- 0:46and go to the valley of Ben Hinnom, near the entrance of the
- 0:51Patchard Gate. There, proclaim the words I tell
- 0:54you and say, Hear the word of the Lord, you kings of Judah and
- 1:00people of Jerusalem. This is what the Lord Almighty,
- 1:04the God of Israel, says. Listen, I'm going to bring a
- 1:09disaster on this place that will make the ears of everyone who
- 1:13hears of it tingle, for they have forsaken me and made this
- 1:18place of foreign gods. They have burned incense in it
- 1:23to gods that neither they nor their ancestors nor the kings of
- 1:28Judah ever knew, and they have filled this place with the blood
- 1:33of the innocent. They have built the high places
- 1:37of Baal to burn their children in the fire as offerings to
- 1:43Baal. Something I did not command or
- 1:47mention, nor did it enter my mind.
- 1:51So beware. The days are coming, declares
- 1:54the Lord, when people will no longer call this place Tafeth or
- 1:59the Valley of Ben Hinnom, but the Valley of Slaughter.
- 2:05In this place I will ruin the plans of Judah and Jerusalem.
- 2:11I will make them fall by the sword before their enemies at
- 2:15the hands of those who want to kill them.
- 2:18I will give their carcasses as food to the birds and wild
- 2:22animals. I'm going to pause there because
- 2:25this is a a warning to Judah and Jerusalem, but it's also a
- 2:32foreshadowing of what God will do with all his enemies and the
- 2:37very end. And you can find that in
- 2:39Revelation chapter 19, verse 17. So the future enemies of God
- 2:45will be treated like this too. They will it's like the great
- 2:48supper of God. All of the those that are
- 2:51destroyed in wrath. There's a call out to the
- 2:55animals to to feed on them. It's, you know, so again, God
- 3:01repeats things and he does things in the same way, but he's
- 3:06a God of justice. So the people that are being
- 3:09destroyed are the people who rejected him completely.
- 3:13So he says I will devastate this city and make it an object of
- 3:17horror and scorn. All who pass by will be appalled
- 3:21and will scoff because of all its wounds.
- 3:25I will make them eat the flesh of their sons and daughters, and
- 3:28they will eat one another's flesh because their enemies will
- 3:32press the siege so hard against them to destroy them.
- 3:36Then break the jar, while those who go with you are watching and
- 3:41say to them, this is what the Lord Almighty says.
- 3:45I will smash this nation and this city just as the Potter's
- 3:51jar is smashed and cannot be repaired.
- 3:57They will bury the dead in Topoth until there is no more
- 4:01room. This is what I will do to this
- 4:04place and to those who live here, declares the Lord.
- 4:07I will make this city like Topoth.
- 4:09The houses in Jerusalem and those of the kings of Judah will
- 4:13be defiled like this place. Topoth all the houses were they
- 4:19burned incense on the roofs to all the starry hosts and poured
- 4:23out drink offerings to other gods.
- 4:28This is a strong warning against worshipping other gods and I
- 4:34guess it would be a strong warning to all nations, the
- 4:37whole entire world. Like if you are worshipping or
- 4:42you are following some other God that is not the God of the
- 4:47Bible, then these kinds of things will be the outcome for
- 4:52all, all other religions. I mean, this is a, this is a
- 4:56word of warning to all people because right now it's talking
- 4:58about Judah and Jerusalem. But in the future, this is
- 5:02coming against all who reject God.
- 5:06And the other thing is that is really important because it
- 5:11affects other religions because the Son of God is the Savior.
- 5:21And if people don't believe that Jesus is the Son of God, those
- 5:27are all the religions that are false religions.
- 5:30Those are all who will receive the wrath of God.
- 5:33So this is a word of warning to all people because the Bible
- 5:38says this. This is the oldest book, this is
- 5:40the oldest religion. And this is true because of all
- 5:45the witnesses, because of the things that happen and the
- 5:50documentation the Bible is there is so much evidence within the
- 5:56Bible and from all the witnesses and all the authors of the Bible
- 6:01that prove this is true. So it's a really great wake up
- 6:07call for all people who practice any other religion because God
- 6:12is not playing around with other little G gods who aren't gods
- 6:17but are probably fallen angels or maybe demons.
- 6:22I don't know what they are, but they are something other.
- 6:25There's something from a spiritual realm that is not God
- 6:28but is pretending to be God and is deceiving many people.
- 6:33So this is a word of warning about this for other people.
- 6:39And there are other religions besides the biblical 1 and
- 6:43that's why this is so important. It's not a matter of, you know,
- 6:47my religion is better than yours.
- 6:49It has nothing to do with religion, but it it has
- 6:52everything to do with the true God and not being deceived by
- 6:57other religions. So now more than ever, it's so
- 7:00important to pray to the one true God and ask him.
- 7:06I mean, he's stronger than any other spirit and ask him to
- 7:09reveal himself to you. It says if you seek him, you
- 7:12will find him. I'll go back to Scripture.
- 7:15Jeremiah then returned from Topath where the Lord had sent
- 7:19him to prophecy, and stood in the court of the Lord's temple
- 7:23and said to all the people, This is what the Lord Almighty, the
- 7:26God of Israel says. Listen, I am going to bring on
- 7:30the city and all the villages around it.
- 7:33Every disaster I pronounced against them because He gives
- 7:38the reason here. They were stiff necked and would
- 7:41not listen to my words. So let's make sure that we are
- 7:46not stiff necked and not listening to God's words, not
- 7:49listening to the warnings that are found in the Bible.
- 7:52So that's the end of chapter 19. I'm going to read what the study
- 7:56Bible has for questions and answers, and then maybe we'll go
- 7:59into chapter 20. Why would parents sacrifice
- 8:02their children? They probably thought that by
- 8:05appeasing Pagan gods, they could improve their quality of life.
- 8:10You know, that's very similar to improving the quality of life.
- 8:14The same reasons that people today give for abortion.
- 8:18If you do not think that that is evil, that is, you know, getting
- 8:25into people's thoughts and influencing people, then it's a
- 8:31part of deception. And so all these people who are
- 8:34talking about having abortion rights, this is some this is a
- 8:39great deception right now. And this is something that they
- 8:44did in ancient times too. They sacrificed their children.
- 8:47Like it says here, they probably thought that by appeasing Pagan
- 8:50gods, they could improve their quality of life.
- 8:54Usually it's an unwanted child. That's why people have it
- 8:59doesn't fit into somebody's life, you know, their schedule
- 9:02or their their way of life. It becomes, you know, in their
- 9:07mind, a burden. And so they destroy a life by
- 9:13having an abortion. And then this is the same
- 9:16deception. Now there are people who just
- 9:20like any other sin, people may have done this in the past, but
- 9:25God is forgiving and merciful and he will forgive if you go to
- 9:29him and and realize like what actually happened.
- 9:33Yes, if you know, most people I think that do this are probably
- 9:36deceived. They don't know what they're
- 9:38doing. They don't think what they're
- 9:39doing, but then their conscience gets to them afterwards and they
- 9:42and they have regret over what they've done.
- 9:45And God is merciful and forgiving.
- 9:48He's not going to. Let's see, I guess here's the
- 9:54thing to think about. Despite having made a terrible
- 9:58decision like that, If somebody has their child is likely with
- 10:03God. So if they repent and never ever
- 10:09do it again and ask for God's forgiveness, there's a good
- 10:12chance that they will be in the Kingdom of God.
- 10:15If they surrender to God and listen to God, they will be in
- 10:18God's Kingdom. And potentially I've the Bible
- 10:22doesn't really have clarity on this, but potentially they will
- 10:27be reunited with that child. That child will be living in
- 10:32God's Kingdom. If you know, God creates life.
- 10:36So if he made that life happen, there's a reason for it and a
- 10:40purpose. And God can take bad things,
- 10:43even if it came from bad circumstances, and make it good.
- 10:47So there's so much to actually consider about life.
- 10:52Like God is the author of life and death.
- 10:54I mean like he decides when a person is born, he creates each
- 10:59person and he also decides when they will die.
- 11:02Now some people take that also into their own hands and that is
- 11:06going against God as well. God says you shall not kill, and
- 11:10God is all about life. He's not about death.
- 11:15But there are other deceiving things that are about death.
- 11:19So any kind of religion that you know is all about death, like
- 11:24Islam, that's a false religion. So let's go back to scripture.
- 11:32Life's harsh realities. High infant mortality may have
- 11:36prompted some to place a lower value of children than adults.
- 11:40Many neighboring peoples abandoned unwanted infants to
- 11:43die. Others didn't name their
- 11:45children until they were older and more likely to survive.
- 11:49The thought of murdering children shocks us.
- 11:51But the people of Judah, who were calloused by the Pagan
- 11:55views around them appear not to have been alarmed by it.
- 12:01Just like today, there's people, you know, who support this
- 12:05abortion, which is like the most evil thing that anyone, you
- 12:09know, anyone who's supporting this is apparently blinded
- 12:14spiritually and does not see what they are doing.
- 12:17So we should pray for all the people who do not see, who did
- 12:21not recognize this, whose eyes aren't open.
- 12:23I pray right now that God opened the eyes of people who do not
- 12:28see these things that we are talking about today.
- 12:32What were Topheth and the valley of Ben Hinnam?
- 12:35The name Topheth may have come from the Hebrew word for
- 12:40fireplace. Topheth was near Jerusalem in
- 12:43the valley of Ben Hinnam. It was known as the place where
- 12:46people sacrificed their children by fire to Molech.
- 12:50Later, the valley became the city's garbage dump.
- 12:54There, the corpses of criminals were discarded and the city
- 12:57trash was burned. Its perpetual fires caused it to
- 13:02become a symbol of future judgment.
- 13:05The word hell is derived from Greek gehenna, which comes from
- 13:11the Hebrew gehennam, a word that refers to the Hinnam Valley.
- 13:18Was cannibalism common at that time?
- 13:21Cannibalism occurred only in the most extreme circumstances and
- 13:26is recorded elsewhere in the Bible.
- 13:29Like Deuteronomy chapter 28 and 2nd Kings chapter 6.
- 13:34It is the ultimate act of desperation.
- 13:37The famine that Jeremiah prophesied would be so severe
- 13:42that the people would be forced to eat human flesh to survive.
- 13:46This actually occurred during the siege of Jerusalem in 586
- 13:51BC. Would the people have seen
- 13:54breaking of this jar's prophecy? The breaking of the jar was a
- 13:58serious signal indicating the beginning of Jerusalem's
- 14:01destruction. Onlookers probably shuddered as
- 14:05they watched Jeremiah smash the jar.
- 14:07Jeremiah was beaten and put in stocks for his warning, but that
- 14:12didn't stop him from prophesying.
- 14:17So continuing on in in Scripture, we'll continue into
- 14:22chapter 20. When the priest Pasture, son of
- 14:26Emer, the official in charge of the temple of the Lord, heard
- 14:29Jeremiah prophesying these things, he had Jeremiah the
- 14:33prophet beaten and put in the stocks at the upper gate of
- 14:37Benjamin at the Lord's temple. The next day, when Pasher
- 14:41released him from the stalks, Jeremiah said to him, The Lord's
- 14:46name for you is not Pasher, but terror on every side.
- 14:52For this is what the Lord says. I will make you a terror to
- 14:57yourself and to all your friends.
- 15:00With your own eyes you will see them fall by the sword of their
- 15:04enemies. I will give all Judah into the
- 15:07hands of the king of Babylon, who will carry them away to
- 15:13Babylon, or put them to the sword.
- 15:16I will deliver all the wealth of the city into the hands of their
- 15:20enemies, all its products, all its valuables, all the treasures
- 15:24of the kings of Judah. They will take it away as
- 15:27plunder and carry it off to Babylon.
- 15:30And you, Pashur, and all who live in your house, will go into
- 15:34exile to Babylon. There you will die and be
- 15:38buried. You and all your friends to whom
- 15:41you have prophesied lies Jeremiah's complaint.
- 15:47Now this is where the Bible, the NIV translation, I think is
- 15:52faulty because it doesn't make sense because when I read this,
- 15:57I was like, wait a minute, this doesn't make sense to me.
- 15:59And then I looked further into it and I found more information
- 16:04that does make sense. So going to the
- 16:07blueletterbible.org, that's where you can find this.
- 16:10If you search Jeremiah 20 verse 7.
- 16:15So it says you deceived me, Lord, and I was deceived.
- 16:21So I disagree with that interpretation.
- 16:25And then it says you overpowered me and prevailed.
- 16:29So I am ridiculed all day long. Everyone mocks me.
- 16:34So did God ever tell Jeremiah he was going to have an easy go at
- 16:38this? No, and he didn't like lure him
- 16:43into, you know, saying these things and say everything is
- 16:46going to go good with you. He never told Jeremiah that.
- 16:49If we look back at all that we've read so deceived.
- 16:53How is Jeremiah deceived? That didn't make sense to me.
- 16:57Like how did God deceive him? He, he, you know, told him what
- 17:01was going to happen and it wasn't necessarily good things
- 17:06and, but he never lied to him or deceived him.
- 17:09So I had to look up the word and it's patha is the Hebrew word
- 17:15and, and it says, you know, it says to entice, deceive,
- 17:19persuade, flatter, allure, enlarged, silly one or silly.
- 17:24Those are all the, the definitions of that word.
- 17:27And it says to be, you know, ultimately the first one is to
- 17:31be spacious, be open, be wide. And then it talks about being
- 17:36open minded, be naive, you know, like to be gullible, all these
- 17:41things. And then it says it's a
- 17:45primitive root. Strong's definition says to make
- 17:49Rumi use figuratively in a moral sense, to make simple, delude
- 17:56flat or persuade. It gives you a lot of different
- 17:59descriptions or definitions of it.
- 18:02And then it says again in brown driver Briggs lexicon, it says
- 18:08it's a verb and it's be spacious wide open and it Aramaic.
- 18:13It says be spacious, abundant, compare Arabic, be youthful in
- 18:19the prime of life. So all these things just really
- 18:23didn't seem like it made sense until I got to it.
- 18:30Says QAL participant in Proverbs 2019, possibly O1 open as to
- 18:42lips. And then if you look in the
- 18:46Hebrew Chaldea lexicon, it says to spread out to open also in
- 18:52the roots beginning with the letters in endo Germanic
- 18:55languages compare sensor pad to spread out.
- 18:59And then it references Proverbs 20 verse 19.
- 19:03And it says one who opens his lips used of a Garrulius man
- 19:09whose lips are opening continually.
- 19:12So then I had to look at, you know, Proverbs 19.
- 19:17So Proverbs 19 warns against associating with a gossip or a
- 19:22simple babbler because they reveal secrets and by extension
- 19:27can be dangerous to be around. Well, this does seem more like
- 19:31Jeremiah. He's revealing secrets.
- 19:34His mouth is open and as as we continue to read in chapter 20,
- 19:39it affirms this interpretation more so than what is written in
- 19:44the Bible. It's not really that he's a
- 19:47gossip, but he's revealing secrets to the public and he can
- 19:50be dangerous to be around, if you think about it, because he's
- 19:53pronouncing judgment. So they they don't want to the
- 19:57people are are rejecting him and it's just like what he's
- 20:00complaining about. So if he you know, if it says
- 20:03that you know, You made my mouth open, Lord.
- 20:09And I was open and spoke all of these things like I, you
- 20:13overpowered me and prevailed. Well, God always said he was
- 20:16going to use Jeremiah to speak. I am ridiculed all day long.
- 20:19Everyone mocks me. Well, that's kind of what
- 20:21happened to Jeremiah. Now here's what it continues.
- 20:24Whenever I speak, so it's talking about speaking, I cry
- 20:28out proclaiming violence and destruction.
- 20:31So the word of the Lord has brought me insult and reproach
- 20:34all day long. But if I say, I will not mention
- 20:38His word, or speak any more in His name.
- 20:42His word is in my heart like a fire, a fire shut up in my
- 20:48bones. I am weary of holding it in.
- 20:52Indeed I cannot. So this is like Jeremiah.
- 20:56God has put this in him. And I think that's what Jeremiah
- 20:59is complaining about. He's like, you put these words
- 21:01in my mouth and I'm spewing these words and telling the
- 21:04secret, the things that people don't know about this
- 21:07destruction that's coming on them, and I can't hold it in.
- 21:10I'm proclaiming this to all the people.
- 21:13I mean, that's the interpretation that makes sense
- 21:15to me and it's supported by the rest of this chapter.
- 21:18So again, we have to sometimes look at what interpretations are
- 21:23when they just don't make sense in context or in reference to
- 21:28the rest of the chapters. Like God was never deceiving
- 21:31Jeremiah, but he was putting words in Jeremiah's mouth.
- 21:36And Jeremiah was, you know, he just couldn't hold it in.
- 21:38He said things he didn't really want to be used like this.
- 21:44And the you know, you see at the very end of this chapter 20 how
- 21:47Jeremiah is just really not liking his calling from God.
- 21:54It's really kind of sad how he says this, but he says I this
- 21:58Jeremiah, I hear many whispering terror on every side.
- 22:02Denounce him. Let's denounce him.
- 22:05All my friends are waiting for me to slip, saying perhaps he
- 22:09will be deceived. Then we will prevail over him
- 22:12and take our revenge on him. But the Lord is with me like a
- 22:19mighty warrior, so my persecutors will stumble and not
- 22:23prevail. They will fail and be thoroughly
- 22:26disgraced. Their dishonor will never be
- 22:29forgotten. Lord Almighty, you who examine
- 22:33the righteous and probe the heart and mind, let me see your
- 22:39vengeance on them. For to you, I have committed my
- 22:43cause. So here we see that Jeremiah is
- 22:47he's relying on God. He's not taking the vengeance
- 22:50himself. He's relying on God.
- 22:52He's saying, God, this is yours to do.
- 22:55Sing to the Lord, give praise to the Lord.
- 22:58He rescues the life of the needy from the hands of the wicked.
- 23:03So he's reminding God of what God does.
- 23:06He, you know, and he's thanking him for that.
- 23:10Now here's where Jeremiah gets really sad.
- 23:13Cursed be the day I was born, may the day my mother bore me
- 23:18not be blessed. Cursed be the man who brought my
- 23:22father the news, who made him very glad, saying, A child is
- 23:26born to you, a son. May that man be like the towns
- 23:30the Lord overthrew without pity. May he hear wailing in the
- 23:35morning, a battle cry at noon. For he did not kill me in the
- 23:40womb. With my mother as my grave, her
- 23:43womb enlarged forever. Why did I ever come out of the
- 23:48womb? To see trouble and sorrow, and
- 23:52to end my days in shame. It's really sad, like God used
- 23:58Jeremiah very powerfully to speak to his people.
- 24:04Now one thing that we do know is that God often if he uses
- 24:08somebody like this, he will bless them doubly so I don't I
- 24:14haven't looked to see how Jeremiah's life on earth ended,
- 24:18but in eternity, I am assured that God will doubly bless him
- 24:25that God, there will be some really great things that God has
- 24:28in stored because Jeremiah was submitted, surrendered to God.
- 24:34He he was praising God in the midst of this like terrible
- 24:39stuff that he had to proclaim to people.
- 24:41He didn't want to do it, but he just felt the words of God just
- 24:45overwhelm him and speak these things to people who didn't want
- 24:48to hear it either. And God warned him.
- 24:51He's like, I will tell you know, you're going to tell people
- 24:53this, but they will not listen to you.
- 24:55So it was kind of like, well, why do it?
- 24:58But God is just so He needed somebody powerful to speak to
- 25:04these people, to give everyone the opportunity to listen to
- 25:07Jeremiah or to ignore him. And then when judgement fell on
- 25:12those people, it was it was just because they heard it from
- 25:17Jeremiah. They had the opportunity.
- 25:19They weren't just taken by surprise.
- 25:21Jeremiah's talking and he just can't stop talking.
- 25:26And so we should think about that today too.
- 25:30If people are warning us about something in our life that needs
- 25:33to change and it lines up with the Bible, we should listen.
- 25:38We shouldn't ignore it because maybe God sent that person.
- 25:43Maybe God put it on somebody's heart to say that so that the
- 25:48person could be warned. Because if a person doesn't
- 25:52change, then the only thing they can expect is judgement.
- 25:56And it's right, you know, they can't blame God for it because
- 25:58they were warned. So it's it's, you know, the
- 26:03people who say these things, the people who are truly speaking on
- 26:07behalf of God don't want to tell people bad news.
- 26:10It doesn't make them good. It doesn't make them, you know,
- 26:14well liked. But are we serving the one?
- 26:19Are we serving God? Or are we trying to please man
- 26:23because we only should please God.
- 26:26And if God puts something in us like this where we can't hold
- 26:30back with it, you know, everything should be done in
- 26:33love. If it's doing in an accusing
- 26:36mean way, then that's not of God.
- 26:39If it's done in like some self-righteous manner, that's
- 26:42not of God. But if it's done with genuine
- 26:45concern about the person, whomever someone is speaking to,
- 26:50if somebody gets a word from God or, you know, has this hard,
- 26:55difficult conversation with someone, you know, maybe they
- 26:58don't even want to have this conversation, but they do it
- 27:02because it's just something that's been bothering them.
- 27:04Well, maybe the Holy Spirit is putting that fire in them to
- 27:08have that tough conversation with someone.
- 27:11And if you're the one, you know, having that conversation with
- 27:15someone, you know, make sure it's done in love.
- 27:18And that is done according to the Bible.
- 27:21The way the Bible says it's for the person's ultimate turning to
- 27:24God to build them up, not to destroy them.
- 27:29And our words can either build up or destroy.
- 27:32And if you're the recipient, just think about God's mercy
- 27:37that God is actually sending someone to you who's telling you
- 27:43things that are uncomfortable that that person probably
- 27:46doesn't want to say, but they care about you and they love you
- 27:49and they want you to be in God's Kingdom.
- 27:53So really think about these things and, and really meditate
- 27:57on things that are spoken and when something touches you, when
- 28:02something effects you, because it could be the Holy Spirit
- 28:07opening up your ears, opening up your eyes, giving wisdom.
- 28:12And don't reject it because God works those in those ways.
- 28:17And we can see that from this chapter.
- 28:19So I will read the questions and answers from chapter 20 and then
- 28:25we will conclude this. So why would a priest punish
- 28:29someone? Pastor?
- 28:31The official in charge of the temple was an executive priest
- 28:34responsible for maintaining order in the temple area.
- 28:37When he heard Jeremiah's prophecy, he lost his temper and
- 28:41had Jeremiah beaten and put in stock.
- 28:43Some say this was a prison, others thinks it was a device
- 28:47for torture that nearly bent a person double.
- 28:51Whatever it was, Pastor's actions were hardly priest like.
- 28:56Why did Jeremiah change Pastor's name?
- 28:59Pastor meant prosperity everywhere.
- 29:02Jeremiah played off this meaning and gave him a new name.
- 29:06Terror on every side. Why did Jeremiah accuse God of
- 29:10deception? Oh, I wonder what they say here.
- 29:14Deceived is a strong word, although it can be translated.
- 29:17Persuaded. Jeremiah used it here to
- 29:21complain about being roped into something in other places.
- 29:24The word translated, seduced or enticed.
- 29:28Jeremiah accused God because he felt that he had been enticed or
- 29:32seduced into becoming a prophet. Jeremiah could not accuse God of
- 29:37lying, however, because God had warned him that his message
- 29:41would be resisted by the kings of Judah, its officials, its
- 29:44priest, and the people of the land.
- 29:49So it's kind of they're coming up with a similar conclusion.
- 29:52Was it? OK?
- 29:53Next question. Was it impossible for Jeremiah
- 29:55to resist speaking God's message?
- 29:57Jeremiah felt compelled by God to speak for him.
- 30:01Certainly there was no external constraint on the prophet.
- 30:05However, God's inner persuasion did not allow Jeremiah to stop
- 30:09bringing God's message. Jeremiah tried to resist, but
- 30:13became so spiritually and emotionally spent that he
- 30:16finally surrendered his will to God's.
- 30:22Why were they whispering terror on every side?
- 30:25This was the same. This was the name Jeremiah had
- 30:28given to Pesher. Perhaps some who had heard
- 30:32Jeremiah use it, we're now mimicking him by using it as a
- 30:37nickname for Jeremiah. The prophet's message of judge
- 30:40judgement was so unpopular that the crowds delighted in hounding
- 30:44him. Another view is that Jeremiah
- 30:47described the whispering as terror he heard whenever he went
- 30:52on every side. What kind of friends were these?
- 30:55Jeremiah friends were anything but loyal.
- 30:58His message alienated even his allies, who now waited to report
- 31:04his unguarded words to the authorities.
- 31:08Was Jeremiah looking for vengeance?
- 31:10Probably. But it's important to remember
- 31:13that despite Jeremiah's raw emotions and honest complaints,
- 31:16he was thinking not only of his feelings but also of God's.
- 31:20He recalled God's warnings of punishment on the same people
- 31:25who were causing him so much grief.
- 31:27And God's vengeance does not arise from revenge, but from
- 31:32justice. People who oppose God bring
- 31:35judgment on themselves. So again, Jeremiah was not
- 31:40taking vengeance himself, he was asking God for that.
- 31:44Why did Jeremiah wish he'd been killed in the womb?
- 31:47This is simply a poetic way of expressing anguish and despair.
- 31:51Because God called Jeremiah to pronounce judgement on the
- 31:54people he loved, he became extremely unpopular.
- 31:58Enemies plotted his death, and so-called friends watched for
- 32:03ways to report him to authorities.
- 32:07And that's the end of chapter 2019 and 20.
