- 0:01Speaker 1: My wife was a good wife. She was a good mom,
- 0:04Speaker 1: she was an entrepreneur. She came from not then to
- 0:09Speaker 1: some point.
- 0:12Speaker 2: Hi everyone, I'm Kevin, and welcome back to Just Thought Lounge.
- 0:16Speaker 2: This is the true crime channel that delivers serious, well
- 0:18Speaker 2: balanced coverage of the cases that really make you think.
- 0:22Speaker 2: On the night of the twenty ninth of June twenty seventeen,
- 0:25Speaker 2: in Palm Beach County, Florida, a masked assailant broke into
- 0:28Speaker 2: the home of the Jenkins family in the early morning hours.
- 0:32Speaker 2: The intruder, armed with a revolver, was not in the
- 0:34Speaker 2: house for very long, but when he left, he had
- 0:37Speaker 2: taken what he came for, the life of thirty three
- 0:40Speaker 2: year old Mikivah Jenkins. Mkiva was a loving wife and
- 0:44Speaker 2: mother of three, pregnant with her fourth child. She was
- 0:47Speaker 2: a successful entrepreneur and active in her church and community.
- 0:51Speaker 2: Inconceivable as it seemed that anyone would wish her dead.
- 0:54Speaker 2: Family and friends nonetheless quickly began to speculate about what
- 0:58Speaker 2: could have made the young businesswoman target. While her husband, Yury,
- 1:02Speaker 2: grieved and spoke openly about his loss, police began to
- 1:06Speaker 2: question whether there was more to this attack than meets
- 1:08Speaker 2: the eye, and after many months, they believed they had
- 1:11Speaker 2: discovered the identity of the man behind the mask and
- 1:14Speaker 2: his motive. Let's take a look. Mkivah Jenkins lived her
- 1:29Speaker 2: own version of the American dream. Her story was a
- 1:32Speaker 2: rags to richest struggle full of hard work, disappointments, persistence,
- 1:36Speaker 2: and finally wealth and success. Mkivah grew up in Bell
- 1:40Speaker 2: Glade in Palm Beach County. She graduated from the University
- 1:43Speaker 2: of South Florida with a BA in criminology and then
- 1:47Speaker 2: went on to earn a master's degree in social work
- 1:49Speaker 2: from Barry University in two thousand and nine. This same year,
- 1:53Speaker 2: on New Year's Eve, Mikivah was attending a church event
- 1:56Speaker 2: and met the man that would later become her husband,
- 1:59Speaker 2: Yuri Jenkins. Both active in their church, The two were
- 2:02Speaker 2: also in sync with their life plans. Mkivah had initiative
- 2:06Speaker 2: to spare, so while she launched her own small businesses,
- 2:09Speaker 2: she encouraged Yuri to follow his passions as well. He
- 2:13Speaker 2: pursued his own business as a barber. Unfortunately, mckiva's party
- 2:18Speaker 2: design business failed in twenty twelve, alongside her nonprofit that
- 2:22Speaker 2: sought to provide support services in her local community. Undeterred,
- 2:26Speaker 2: Mkivah founded the Prime Enterprise Group, a consulting company that
- 2:30Speaker 2: supported entrepreneurial clients with business planning, coaching, mentorship, and educational webinars.
- 2:36Speaker 2: She regularly held live events online where she shared her
- 2:40Speaker 2: own story and offered advice to those seeking to take
- 2:43Speaker 2: the leap and become their own boss.
- 2:46Speaker 3: People that know my story, they'll say, well, Makiva, you
- 2:50Speaker 3: used to have a non private used to have an
- 2:52Speaker 3: event planning company. You owned a bootique. Hey, Felicia, Felicia,
- 2:57Speaker 3: how are you thank you for chiming in? I live
- 3:00Speaker 3: on the edge too.
- 3:01Speaker 4: Yep.
- 3:02Speaker 3: So when I started, I've always written business plans for
- 3:07Speaker 3: my family and friends, but I didn't do it as
- 3:10Speaker 3: a company. I was still trying to figure out what
- 3:12Speaker 3: my niche was and what I wanted to do. And
- 3:15Speaker 3: it was my husband that suggested I start a consulting company,
- 3:19Speaker 3: and I'm like, we don't have any money for that.
- 3:22Speaker 3: I'm trying to get the boutique off the ground. I
- 3:26Speaker 3: was still doing event planning here and there, and I
- 3:31Speaker 3: still had my nonprofit. Again, I'm pulled in so many
- 3:34Speaker 3: different areas because I'm just trying to make ends meet
- 3:37Speaker 3: and bring money in to help my husband pay the bills,
- 3:40Speaker 3: because as well, it's not like it used to be
- 3:44Speaker 3: in the past, where men are the sole providers. Women
- 3:48Speaker 3: get out there and hustle, they do the work, and
- 3:51Speaker 3: they kind of meet each other in the middle. Least,
- 3:54Speaker 3: that's what me and my husband do.
- 3:57Speaker 2: In twenty seventeen, Nikiva was thirty three years old and
- 4:00Speaker 2: a mother to three children. Mikiva and Yuri had two children,
- 4:04Speaker 2: aged seven and one. She also had a thirteen year
- 4:07Speaker 2: old daughter who was staying with her father. On the
- 4:09Speaker 2: night of June twenty ninth, it was a Thursday, A
- 4:16Speaker 2: nine to one to one call brought law enforcement and
- 4:18Speaker 2: emergency services to the Jenkins family home around two am. There,
- 4:22Speaker 2: responders rushed upstairs to the second level master bedroom, where
- 4:25Speaker 2: they found Yuri distraught holding the Kiva, who had suffered
- 4:29Speaker 2: a gunshot wound to the head. Paramedics tried what they
- 4:32Speaker 2: could but were unsuccessful. Present at the house was Mikiva's brother, Markavius,
- 4:39Speaker 2: and a friend of Yuri's named Dmitri Dale. The three
- 4:42Speaker 2: men were in the garage just before two am, where
- 4:45Speaker 2: Yuri had been giving Markavius a haircut when a massed
- 4:48Speaker 2: intruder forced his way through the unlocked garage door. The
- 4:52Speaker 2: masked man was dressed entirely in black. He had fabric
- 4:55Speaker 2: wrapped around his head and face, and he carried a
- 4:58Speaker 2: loaded revolver. The men were diructed to lay down on
- 5:01Speaker 2: the ground following these instructions. The intruder then asked them
- 5:04Speaker 2: for the location of Quest, the name of Mikiva's mother.
- 5:08Speaker 2: The intruder indicated that he was owed money, but Quest
- 5:11Speaker 2: did not live at the house and was not a
- 5:13Speaker 2: frequent visitor. Confused in attempting to explain, the men were
- 5:17Speaker 2: then ushered inside the house. Dmitri requested that they take
- 5:21Speaker 2: the child that was present out of the house, a
- 5:23Speaker 2: proposal that the intruder agreed to. Then, according to Markavius's account,
- 5:28Speaker 2: the gunman went upstairs with Yuri briefly while he forced
- 5:31Speaker 2: the other two men to remain on the lower level.
- 5:34Speaker 2: He came down once to demand car keys from Dmitri,
- 5:37Speaker 2: who handed over the keys to a white Dodge charger.
- 5:40Speaker 2: The massman then entered the bedroom on his own. Markavius
- 5:43Speaker 2: stood with his brother in law outside of the room
- 5:46Speaker 2: Dmitri downstairs. They listened while a gunshot rang out from
- 5:50Speaker 2: the bedroom. A moment later, the massman left the house,
- 5:57Speaker 2: then drove off in the Dodge Charger. Marcavius phoned nine
- 6:01Speaker 2: to one one. Mkifah's family suspected that they knew what
- 6:10Speaker 2: had led to the young business woman's death her social
- 6:13Speaker 2: media posts displaying her success. Two days prior to the
- 6:17Speaker 2: mass man breaking into her home, Mkivah had posted a
- 6:20Speaker 2: short biographical post to her Facebook page, one that offered
- 6:23Speaker 2: both personal and financial details. Mkivah's approach to her live
- 6:27Speaker 2: video postings for her business and her social media in
- 6:30Speaker 2: general were very open and honest. These made her relatable,
- 6:34Speaker 2: but also gave her credibility because she could speak to
- 6:37Speaker 2: her own success. But in this last post, Mkiva may
- 6:41Speaker 2: have gone too far. A few years before, she turned
- 6:44Speaker 2: down a business course because she couldn't afford the ninety
- 6:47Speaker 2: nine dollars fee. She wrote, I am in awe of
- 6:50Speaker 2: how far I've come fast forward to now. We overcame
- 6:53Speaker 2: being homeless in twenty thirteen and fourteen, to reaching my
- 6:56Speaker 2: six figure mark in twenty fifteen, to now making multi
- 7:00Speaker 2: six figures. In the immediate aftermath of her killing, family
- 7:03Speaker 2: began to wonder if it could be a coincidence that
- 7:06Speaker 2: so soon after posting about her financial success that a
- 7:10Speaker 2: masked man broke into her home. Uri spoke with media
- 7:16Speaker 2: in the days following the incident. The grieving husband tried
- 7:19Speaker 2: his best to convey what kind of a person Makiba
- 7:22Speaker 2: was and what she meant to him.
- 7:25Speaker 1: She was a good month, She kept me level.
- 7:28Speaker 5: How do you want people to be remembered, to remember Mikidah.
- 7:34Speaker 1: She was an entrepreneur. She was that. I mean, I'm
- 7:40Speaker 1: an entrepreneur and we just clicked together. We used to
- 7:43Speaker 1: call ourselves jay Z and Beyonce, a power couple.
- 7:47Speaker 2: Uri was asked about the negative stories that had emerged
- 7:50Speaker 2: after the attack, speculation that Mkivah's boasting about her success
- 7:54Speaker 2: online had been the impetus for the masked man to
- 7:56Speaker 2: break into the house.
- 7:59Speaker 1: Honestly, honestly, honestly, everybody can go to hell. My wife
- 8:04Speaker 1: was a good wife. She was a good mom. She
- 8:07Speaker 1: was an entrepreneur. She came from nothing to south.
- 8:15Speaker 2: Investigators had one good lead, the white Dodge charger that
- 8:19Speaker 2: the mask man had driven from the scene of the murder.
- 8:22Speaker 2: Detectives began collecting and scanning all available security cameras, in
- 8:25Speaker 2: the neighborhood, and of course any that could have captured
- 8:29Speaker 2: the house. They found a vehicle with two men entering
- 8:32Speaker 2: the area around two am, and then the charger was
- 8:35Speaker 2: seen exiting the neighborhood approximately eighteen minutes later. Outside of
- 8:39Speaker 2: the area, investigators tracked the car traveling north away from
- 8:43Speaker 2: the murder scene. Cameras tracked the Dodge Charger to a
- 8:46Speaker 2: three to four block radius, where they determined, based on
- 8:49Speaker 2: surrounding cameras, that the car must have been left. The
- 8:53Speaker 2: driver was presumably picked up by the darker, unidentified vehicle
- 8:57Speaker 2: that could be seen following behind it, but they thought
- 9:00Speaker 2: it was also possible the intruder then fled on foot.
- 9:03Speaker 2: None of the cameras captured the men in these vehicles
- 9:06Speaker 2: clearly enough to identify them. However, within the few blocks
- 9:09Speaker 2: to where the car was tracked, it was found abandoned.
- 9:13Speaker 2: Inside it, officers saw the keys and a black T shirt,
- 9:17Speaker 2: Recognizing that vehicle was central to locating Mkiva's killer. Lead
- 9:21Speaker 2: Detective Sean Oliver of the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office
- 9:24Speaker 2: made a plead to the public for any information on
- 9:27Speaker 2: the car and its driver.
- 9:30Speaker 5: We do have something specific that we're asking the public
- 9:33Speaker 5: if they saw something at a particular time, and that
- 9:36Speaker 5: is because the suspect, after murdering Mkiva, left the scene
- 9:39Speaker 5: in a white Dodge Charger. He abandoned the charger on
- 9:43Speaker 5: Lawrence Road just south of Pensacola, which is about zero
- 9:46Speaker 5: point nine miles from the scene. We believe that either
- 9:50Speaker 5: that person left on foot had a car waiting for them,
- 9:53Speaker 5: and we are just asking that anyone in that area
- 9:56Speaker 5: between the hours one to fifty in the morning and
- 9:58Speaker 5: two twenty in the morning on in June twenty ninth,
- 10:00Speaker 5: which is a Thursday, if they saw a car on
- 10:03Speaker 5: the shoulder of the road, if they saw anyone walking,
- 10:05Speaker 5: please call the Sheriff's office.
- 10:08Speaker 2: Despite the potential of the rental car lead, it failed
- 10:10Speaker 2: to deliver a prime suspect. However, the stories of what
- 10:14Speaker 2: happened that night told to the police by the three
- 10:17Speaker 2: men came under intense scrutiny. Detective Oliver questioned the likelihood
- 10:21Speaker 2: that this attack was motivated by mckieva's social media and indeed,
- 10:25Speaker 2: if it was, the killer was still likely to be
- 10:28Speaker 2: someone personally connected to her. Dmitri Dale came under the
- 10:31Speaker 2: most scrutiny. Curiously, Dmitri had arrived at the Jenkins house
- 10:35Speaker 2: that night only minutes before the masked man, and the
- 10:38Speaker 2: police believed that this man must have had assistance reaching
- 10:41Speaker 2: the house that night, as he managed to flee after
- 10:44Speaker 2: the murder only by stealing the family vehicle. The big
- 10:47Speaker 2: break finally came months later when Dmitri, Dale, under suspicion
- 10:51Speaker 2: of being involved and facing murder charges, finally decided to
- 10:54Speaker 2: cooperate with the police. He directed the investigator's attention to
- 10:58Speaker 2: a nineteen year old acquaintance of his named Jovan Joseph. Jovan,
- 11:03Speaker 2: Dmitri said, had been tight on cash and so was
- 11:06Speaker 2: convinced to break into the Jenkins' home. The nineteen year
- 11:09Speaker 2: old was then arrested and charged with first degree murder.
- 11:14Speaker 2: Jovan initially denied any involvement. Possessions of value had been
- 11:18Speaker 2: left in plain sight throughout the house, even mckievah's laptop
- 11:22Speaker 2: and other electroducs were left directly next to her. Aside
- 11:26Speaker 2: from the promptly abandoned rental car, the mass man left
- 11:29Speaker 2: with nothing of value. The story that Dmitri told, however,
- 11:33Speaker 2: was not one of a burglary gone wrong, but of
- 11:35Speaker 2: a murder for hire. Yuri Jenkins, the distraught, grieving husband,
- 11:40Speaker 2: was behind the murder of his wife. Dmitri said Yuri
- 11:44Speaker 2: was no longer in love with his wife and he
- 11:46Speaker 2: believed he would benefit financially if she was dead. Dmitri
- 11:50Speaker 2: said that he had arranged for Jovan and Yuri to
- 11:52Speaker 2: meet the day before the murder. An initial deposit had
- 11:55Speaker 2: been made and the plan was set.
- 12:01Speaker 6: Yuri, did you tell your wife?
- 12:03Speaker 1: No?
- 12:03Speaker 6: I didn't.
- 12:05Speaker 7: You said you were innocent.
- 12:06Speaker 6: I am innocent and what happened, God will vindicate me.
- 12:10Speaker 3: What do you have to say about this year?
- 12:11Speaker 6: This is the book God have vindicating innocent. Yes, I am.
- 12:23Speaker 2: Yury Jenkins was indicted for first degree murder in December
- 12:26Speaker 2: twenty seventeen. He spoke voluntarily with investigators for two hours.
- 12:31Speaker 2: He maintained his innocence throughout and denied any knowledge of
- 12:35Speaker 2: Jovan's plan to shoot his wife. He had been introduced
- 12:38Speaker 2: to Jovan. He said he had seen the man sitting
- 12:41Speaker 2: on his couch, but they had nothing to do with
- 12:43Speaker 2: each other and they never discussed a murder. Yury pled
- 12:46Speaker 2: not guilty and the case was set for trial. Jury's
- 12:51Speaker 2: selection was anticipated to begin in the summer of twenty nineteen.
- 12:55Speaker 2: But on the day that this was due to take place,
- 12:58Speaker 2: another development unfolded. Jovin had agreed to a deal with
- 13:01Speaker 2: state prosecutors. He pleaded guilty to a charge of second
- 13:05Speaker 2: degree murder. He agreed to testify against Yuri at trial,
- 13:08Speaker 2: and in exchange, he would receive a significantly reduced sentence.
- 13:14Speaker 4: Aunt Joseph just got probably one of the sweetest deals
- 13:18Speaker 4: I've seen in a homicide case. In the thirty four
- 13:20Speaker 4: years out of the criminal defense attorney. Theoretically, the judge
- 13:24Speaker 4: can give him as little as five years in the
- 13:26Speaker 4: Department of Corrections, and the most he can get his
- 13:29Speaker 4: twenty years in the Department of Corrections. The state waived
- 13:32Speaker 4: in a mandatory minimum sense. I mean, Jovon Joseph is
- 13:35Speaker 4: accused of shooting this young woman in the head at
- 13:38Speaker 4: point blank range, in killing her, and he's going to
- 13:43Speaker 4: serve at worse seventeen and a half years in prison
- 13:47Speaker 4: once we get rid of gain time, when he was
- 13:49Speaker 4: looking at twenty five years to life before.
- 13:53Speaker 2: Jovin had told detectives that Yuri paid him fifteen hundred
- 13:56Speaker 2: dollars up front for the killing. Another ten thousand would
- 13:59Speaker 2: be to him after the deed was done. Jovan said
- 14:03Speaker 2: he purchased the gun used from a friend for sixty dollars,
- 14:06Speaker 2: dressed in black clothing, wrapped a T shirt around his
- 14:09Speaker 2: head as a face mask. Once in the house, Yuri
- 14:12Speaker 2: showed him to where Mikiba was sleeping. He walked up,
- 14:15Speaker 2: took aim, and pulled the trigger. Both Dmitri Dale and
- 14:20Speaker 2: jo Van Joseph were set to be key witnesses at trial.
- 14:24Speaker 2: In January twenty twenty. An initial attempt at the prosecution
- 14:28Speaker 2: ended in a mistrial after jurors were told by Mikiba's
- 14:31Speaker 2: mother outside of court that Uri was absolutely, inarguably guilty.
- 14:36Speaker 2: COVID pandemic delays meant that Yuri would not face another
- 14:40Speaker 2: jury of his peers until spring twenty twenty two. By then,
- 14:44Speaker 2: the key witness testimony was showing some cracks.
- 14:50Speaker 8: You're going to hear that Dmitri Dale gave statement on
- 14:56Speaker 8: June thirtieth of twenty seventeen. We're going to hear that
- 15:01Speaker 8: he gave another statement on August fourteenth of twenty seventeen.
- 15:05Speaker 9: You're going to hear that he gave another statement.
- 15:07Speaker 10: In October of twenty and fourteen.
- 15:10Speaker 11: He was doing all kinds of giving.
- 15:12Speaker 8: All kinds of statements, making all kinds of statements that
- 15:16Speaker 8: were consistently inconsistent with each other. They have to testify
- 15:22Speaker 8: to the satisfaction of the government of the prosecution. They
- 15:29Speaker 8: have to testify in a way that convinces.
- 15:35Speaker 10: The prosecution.
- 15:38Speaker 8: That they're being truth despite the fact that they are
- 15:43Speaker 8: both admitted waters, despite the fact that they have a
- 15:49Speaker 8: distrut of not telling the truth, despite wearing to tell
- 15:52Speaker 8: the truth, despite the fact that neither of them can
- 15:55Speaker 8: agree on what allegedly happened, or at least I worried
- 16:00Speaker 8: that they're supposed to tell it about what happened.
- 16:06Speaker 2: When Joe Van took the stand, he told the jury
- 16:08Speaker 2: he was paid ten thousand dollars up front from Yuri,
- 16:10Speaker 2: not fifteen hundred as he had told investigators. He further
- 16:14Speaker 2: told investigators that Dmitri had also received cash for his
- 16:18Speaker 2: role in the plan. A stack of cash was handed
- 16:21Speaker 2: to Dmitri from Yuri, he said, a statement that directly
- 16:24Speaker 2: contradicted what Dmitri had told the police of his involvement.
- 16:29Speaker 9: And on that day you said this is right before
- 16:31Speaker 9: you were leaving, is when you got paid the money correct.
- 16:34Speaker 9: And you were sitting in the cars where you testified,
- 16:37Speaker 9: and mister Jenkins handed you ten thousand dollars in cash,
- 16:40Speaker 9: And is it true he also had a ten thousand
- 16:42Speaker 9: dollars in cash to mister Dale.
- 16:45Speaker 11: That's what I assumed, miss.
- 16:46Speaker 9: He handed a pile of cash to mister Dale. Yes, sir,
- 16:49Speaker 9: you did an account mister Dale's cash, right, But you
- 16:51Speaker 9: assumed it was the same amount as yours.
- 16:53Speaker 11: Yes, sir, because they're about the.
- 16:54Speaker 9: Same height for the sacks, about the same size.
- 16:58Speaker 11: Oh, I don't know, sir.
- 17:00Speaker 9: Look at the money he got, No, sir, but you
- 17:02Speaker 9: looked at the money you got, right, And you testified
- 17:04Speaker 9: they were all hundreds right.
- 17:06Speaker 11: I don't remember, sir.
- 17:07Speaker 9: You don't remember that if they're all hundred dollars bills?
- 17:09Speaker 11: You asked him? You you said that I testified it was
- 17:11Speaker 11: a one hundred dollars.
- 17:12Speaker 9: No, I'm asking right now. Were they all one hundred
- 17:14Speaker 9: dollar bills? I don't remember, sir, You don't remember.
- 17:19Speaker 2: Text messages between Dmitri and Joe van It showed the
- 17:22Speaker 2: men discussing how they were both as struggling financially, only
- 17:25Speaker 2: days after each had apparently received large payments from yuri
- 17:29Speaker 2: URI's defense raised questions as to whether these payments had
- 17:32Speaker 2: ever actually been made.
- 17:36Speaker 9: Is that a text message that you're familiar with, Yes, sir,
- 17:39Speaker 9: and that's a text message you sent to mister Dale.
- 17:41Speaker 11: Correct, Yes, sir. And in that text message, you.
- 17:44Speaker 9: Say, Bro, bring me twenty I need it for gas.
- 17:47Speaker 9: Meet me somewhere.
- 17:48Speaker 11: That's correct, Yes, sir. So that's.
- 17:51Speaker 9: About three days after you got ten thousand dollars in cash.
- 17:54Speaker 9: You need money for gas?
- 17:56Speaker 11: Yes, yes, sir.
- 18:00Speaker 9: Let me say you one more texts all up here
- 18:07Speaker 9: July second, twenty seventeen, at twelve fifty four pm. That's
- 18:11Speaker 9: about five minutes after your text. Do you recognize that message?
- 18:15Speaker 11: Yes, sir, and that's.
- 18:17Speaker 9: A message from mister Dale to you. Correct, Yes, sir,
- 18:19Speaker 9: and he replies, I have no money, Bro, I'm broke
- 18:22Speaker 9: and I'm bringing this car back.
- 18:23Speaker 11: Correct. That's do then Dale to you.
- 18:26Speaker 6: Correct.
- 18:26Speaker 9: That's his response to you saying give me twenty bucks.
- 18:28Speaker 9: He's saying I don't have any I'm broke.
- 18:29Speaker 11: That correct.
- 18:31Speaker 9: The same day, July second, twenty seventeen, about five minutes
- 18:33Speaker 9: after your text, Yes, sir, you remember that, yes, sir, so,
- 18:37Speaker 9: he doesn't have any money left.
- 18:39Speaker 11: According to this either correct Dale, Yes, yes, sir.
- 18:45Speaker 2: Further discrepancies existed between Jovn and Dmitri's testimony regarding the
- 18:50Speaker 2: gun used in the murder. Dmitri Dale testified that the
- 18:53Speaker 2: gun used by Jovan had been provided directly by Yuri,
- 18:56Speaker 2: or so he believed from the conversations they had held,
- 19:00Speaker 2: but again, his accomplice, Joe Van, told a different story.
- 19:04Speaker 2: He testified that he had purchased the gun himself, a revolver,
- 19:07Speaker 2: based on the suggestion of Dimitri Dale.
- 19:13Speaker 9: When you got that money at that time, you didn't
- 19:16Speaker 9: have the gun yet, correct, the revolver. In fact, you
- 19:21Speaker 9: went from mister Jenkins house to find snake Word to
- 19:24Speaker 9: get the gun, yes, sir. And whose idea was.
- 19:26Speaker 7: It to get a revolver?
- 19:28Speaker 11: Dale's idea?
- 19:29Speaker 9: And why did he say, to get a revolver leaves
- 19:32Speaker 9: leaves no shells. You know what does that mean to you?
- 19:34Speaker 9: Leaves no shells.
- 19:34Speaker 11: There's not enough evidence for the police collect.
- 19:36Speaker 9: Like like the cartridge. When you shoot the gun, it
- 19:38Speaker 9: doesn't leave a shell on the floor, yes, sir, okay.
- 19:41Speaker 9: And mister Dale's one who explained that to you. Correct, yes, sir,
- 19:46Speaker 9: you gave him one of those hundred dollar bills that
- 19:47Speaker 9: you had from mister Jenkins.
- 19:49Speaker 11: I don't know if it wasn't. I don't know how
- 19:50Speaker 11: much I paid for it there well, how much?
- 19:53Speaker 7: How much was the gun?
- 19:55Speaker 11: Yeah, I didn't pay a hundred for it, I know
- 19:57Speaker 11: a hundred for.
- 19:58Speaker 9: It's five Before that the gun was sixty dollars. Does
- 20:02Speaker 9: that sound right?
- 20:03Speaker 11: Yes, sir.
- 20:03Speaker 9: And when you gave him on hundred, he gave you
- 20:05Speaker 9: back change, yes, sir. This is the drug dealer that
- 20:07Speaker 9: provides change.
- 20:10Speaker 2: Despite the uncertainty in Jovan's testimony and the contradictions and
- 20:14Speaker 2: stories being told, both key witnesses nonetheless provided damning details
- 20:18Speaker 2: of the murder plot. Jovan told jurors how the three
- 20:21Speaker 2: had held a brainstorming session the day before to explore
- 20:25Speaker 2: ideas of how to kill Mikiva. They discussed the possibility
- 20:29Speaker 2: of killing her at work, of getting into a traffic accident,
- 20:32Speaker 2: and of potentially staging an attack that appeared to target
- 20:35Speaker 2: both her and Yuri. Dmitri outlined the agreement arranged with
- 20:39Speaker 2: Yuri and Jovan.
- 20:44Speaker 12: I want to ask you these questions, mister, did this
- 20:48Speaker 12: defendant you're Jenkins?
- 20:53Speaker 10: Did he give you Jaman Joseph.
- 20:58Speaker 12: Access to his house on June twin in ninety twenty seventeen.
- 21:01Speaker 10: In the early one hours.
- 21:04Speaker 12: Did this defendant tell you that he want his wife killed?
- 21:08Speaker 11: Objection lead?
- 21:11Speaker 12: Just do you want?
- 21:12Speaker 10: I'm asking him?
- 21:15Speaker 3: I'm sorry.
- 21:18Speaker 12: Did this defend to tell you that he wanted his
- 21:20Speaker 12: wife killed? Did this defendant have discussion with you and
- 21:26Speaker 12: Jovan Joseph about killing his life?
- 21:28Speaker 11: Objection leading?
- 21:30Speaker 10: Oh, did this defendant asked you to bring Jovan Joseph
- 21:37Speaker 10: back to his house during the early morning hours of
- 21:40Speaker 10: June twenty, ninety, twenty seventeen.
- 21:45Speaker 2: The third man that had been in the house that night,
- 21:47Speaker 2: Markavias Mkivah's brother, took the stand to outline what he
- 21:51Speaker 2: had observed. It was the fourth day of the trial.
- 21:54Speaker 2: Overwhelmed by the testimony given up to that point, Marcavius
- 21:58Speaker 2: took a detour on his way to the witness stand,
- 22:01Speaker 2: and he walked it straight towards his former brother in
- 22:03Speaker 2: law before being intercepted by court bailiffs, held back, and
- 22:07Speaker 2: then escorted out of the courtroom.
- 22:12Speaker 13: I wanted to start by apologizing to the to the judge,
- 22:18Speaker 13: and I want to apologize for my actions and how
- 22:23Speaker 13: I disrupted everything. He tells us not to move. Get
- 22:28Speaker 13: down on the ground and don't move.
- 22:30Speaker 14: Okay, Now, are you able to have any type of
- 22:33Speaker 14: conversation with the defendant while you both are lying down
- 22:36Speaker 14: on the ground.
- 22:37Speaker 7: Yes, what are you both? Or who's sang what to whom?
- 22:42Speaker 5: He?
- 22:43Speaker 13: I'm as I told him that, Hey, isn't that your
- 22:49Speaker 13: friend from earlier that day that came? He told me no,
- 22:54Speaker 13: and then it went on to say that I went
- 22:56Speaker 13: on to say that, hey, we need to do something
- 22:59Speaker 13: bout this year. We can't just let this man come
- 23:01Speaker 13: in here and do whatever he want to do. You know,
- 23:04Speaker 13: we live here, the kids here. We gotta do something.
- 23:08Speaker 13: We can't just sit here.
- 23:10Speaker 14: So you both are down on the ground, you're somewhat
- 23:12Speaker 14: whispering to each other, and he, the gunman, is making
- 23:15Speaker 14: his way over to that hallway to the left where
- 23:17Speaker 14: your sister is asleep in her room.
- 23:19Speaker 7: Yes, and you said you're thinking you ask him, is
- 23:23Speaker 7: that your friend or the guy who came over earlier?
- 23:25Speaker 12: Yes?
- 23:26Speaker 7: Now which friend are you referring to?
- 23:28Speaker 14: Are you talking about the guy that came over with
- 23:29Speaker 14: Demitridale or someone else.
- 23:31Speaker 13: The one that came over with Demitridale.
- 23:33Speaker 7: And the defendant told you that that was not him.
- 23:36Speaker 13: Yes, I heard the gun go off.
- 23:39Speaker 7: How many times did you hear the gun go off?
- 23:41Speaker 13: One time?
- 23:43Speaker 7: And after the gun went off, what did the gunman do?
- 23:48Speaker 13: He's springing out. He ran out the room as if
- 23:50Speaker 13: he was you knowing a tract meet.
- 23:54Speaker 2: Phone records and witness statements showed that Mkivah had told
- 23:57Speaker 2: her husband in the days before her death that you
- 24:00Speaker 2: wanted a divorce. She had been pursuing this option in May,
- 24:03Speaker 2: only weeks before the murder, before having a change of
- 24:06Speaker 2: heart when she learned that she was pregnant. In addition,
- 24:09Speaker 2: Mkivah had a life insurance policy for half a million dollars.
- 24:13Speaker 2: Prosecutors argued that this payout was central to Yuri's motivation
- 24:17Speaker 2: to have his wife killed. There were two policies, one
- 24:21Speaker 2: of much less value, and Yuri believed that both had
- 24:24Speaker 2: been moved into his name. Days after the murder, while
- 24:27Speaker 2: making arrangements for Mkiva's funeral, Uri rang the insurance provider
- 24:32Speaker 2: to confirm the beneficiary information on the half million dollar policy.
- 24:36Speaker 2: Yuri was informed only after Mkiva had been killed that
- 24:40Speaker 2: he was not named on the insurance policy at all.
- 24:43Speaker 2: Mkivah had instead named her grandmother as the sole beneficiary.
- 24:49Speaker 15: Oh funeral because it's coming up and I can't.
- 25:05Speaker 1: I don't.
- 25:05Speaker 15: We don't have the funds the people.
- 25:11Speaker 10: Okay, So who has to have the way?
- 25:14Speaker 9: Then?
- 25:14Speaker 10: Who has away people?
- 25:16Speaker 15: Okay?
- 25:18Speaker 9: And I am sorry for your lost right.
- 25:21Speaker 12: Let me get you over to our life benefits area
- 25:24Speaker 12: and they'll be able to help you.
- 25:28Speaker 15: If a kid, you're maybe a snaris sing or the.
- 25:37Speaker 7: Unfortunately I can't follow that their contact and.
- 25:40Speaker 2: I'm gonna like to speak toile.
- 25:45Speaker 1: Okay. Oh wow.
- 25:56Speaker 4: This case is about way and lawars.
- 26:03Speaker 11: Plain and simple.
- 26:04Speaker 4: It is the burden of the government to provide you
- 26:08Speaker 4: with truthful, honest, sworn testimony.
- 26:13Speaker 14: He was there to take one thing only and that
- 26:16Speaker 14: was to snatch the.
- 26:18Speaker 7: Life of Makieva Jenkins. He was there to complete.
- 26:22Speaker 14: The job that the defendant asked him to do, and
- 26:26Speaker 14: he either received fifteen hundred dollars or ten thousand dollars,
- 26:30Speaker 14: and he was promised additional money. Twenty eight days before
- 26:35Speaker 14: her death that the one policy was changed, and he
- 26:39Speaker 14: assumed he assumed that the second policy had been changed also.
- 26:45Speaker 2: Yury Jenkins was found guilty of first degree murder in
- 26:48Speaker 2: May twenty twenty two Circuit Court Judge Kirk Voker immediately
- 26:53Speaker 2: sentenced Jenkins to life in prison.
- 26:57Speaker 9: The jury find as followers. As to count one, we
- 27:01Speaker 9: find the.
- 27:01Speaker 10: Defeated guilty of first degree murder as charged in the indictment.
- 27:09Speaker 2: For his part in plotting Mkiva's murderer, Dmitri Dale was
- 27:12Speaker 2: sentenced to forty five days in jail and probation. Although
- 27:16Speaker 2: he was originally indicted for first degree murder in twenty twenty,
- 27:19Speaker 2: which could have carried a potential life sentence without the
- 27:22Speaker 2: possibility of parole, Dmitri's cooperation ultimately earned him the lesser
- 27:27Speaker 2: charge of manslaughter with a weapon. Dmitri testified and then
- 27:32Speaker 2: was released on fifteen years probation. A few weeks after
- 27:36Speaker 2: Yuri's conviction, Jovan Joseph was sentenced to fifteen years in
- 27:40Speaker 2: prison for pulling the trigger in exchange for either fifteen
- 27:43Speaker 2: hundred or ten thousand dollars. He was given credit for
- 27:47Speaker 2: the nearly five years that he had already spent detained
- 27:49Speaker 2: to that point. After the trial, defense attorney Greg Lherman
- 27:54Speaker 2: filed a motion for the court to either vacate the
- 27:56Speaker 2: verdict or order a new trial, arguing that the state
- 28:00Speaker 2: allowed contradictory and improper testimony from both Dimitri and Jovan.
- 28:05Speaker 2: This motion was denied as of taping. Your's appeal is pending.
- 28:10Speaker 2: He maintains his innocence.
- 28:14Speaker 3: Hey, I'm Mekiva with the Prime Enterprise Group.
- 28:18Speaker 6: Welcome.
- 28:19Speaker 3: I'm here to talk about business.
- 28:21Speaker 7: I wish I had that kind of impersonality.
- 28:24Speaker 3: All Right, I gotta go.
- 28:26Speaker 7: Pick these kids up from school.
- 28:28Speaker 13: Mommy duties are calling.
- 28:29Speaker 11: I'll talk to you guys later.
- 28:31Speaker 9: Bye.
- 28:33Speaker 2: And that was the tragic story of Mikivah Jenkins. Thanks
- 28:37Speaker 2: for joining me once again. I'm Kevin. This is just
- 28:40Speaker 2: thought lounge and I'll see in the next one.
