- Lucas: Hey, welcome back to Learn German with Fexingo. I'm Lucas. Luna: And I'm Luna. Ready for episode 96? Lucas: Absolutely. Last time we covered describing pain at the doctor's—headaches, stomachaches. Today we're going a little more specific: symptoms of a cold. Luna: Oh, that's super useful. I always get a runny nose in winter. Lucas: Perfect example. So the first phrase: 'Ich habe Husten.' That means 'I have a cough.' Luna: Ich habe Husten. Lucas: Good. Slow it down: Husten has that 'oo' sound. Husten. Luna: Husten. Ich habe Husten. Lucas: Exactly. Next, 'Ich habe Schnupfen'—I have a runny nose or sniffles. Luna: Schnupfen? That's a fun word. Ich habe Schnupfen. Lucas: You got it. And if your throat hurts: 'Ich habe Halsschmerzen.' Luna: Halsschmerzen. That's throat pain, right? Lucas: Right. 'Hals' is throat, 'Schmerzen' is pain. So 'Ich habe Halsschmerzen.' Luna: Ich habe Halsschmerzen. Lucas: Now, if you have a fever: 'Ich habe Fieber.' Luna: Fieber. Like fever in English. Ich habe Fieber. Lucas: And if you have all of these together, you can say 'Ich bin erkältet'—I have a cold. Luna: Erkältet. That sounds like 'erkältet' from 'kalt' maybe? Lucas: Exactly. 'Kalt' means cold, so 'erkältet' is like you've caught a cold. 'Ich bin erkältet.' Luna: Ich bin erkältet. Lucas: Great. Let's put them in a mini dialogue. Say you go to the doctor and he asks: 'Was fehlt Ihnen?' You could say: 'Ich habe Husten und Schnupfen. Und ich habe Fieber.' Luna: Ich habe Husten und Schnupfen. Und ich habe Fieber. Lucas: Perfect. And the doctor might say: 'Sie sind erkältet.' Luna: Sie sind erkältet. Lucas: Yeah. Alright, let's practice all five again. Repeat after me: Ich habe Husten. Luna: Ich habe Husten. Lucas: Ich habe Schnupfen. Luna: Ich habe Schnupfen. Lucas: Ich habe Halsschmerzen. Luna: Ich habe Halsschmerzen. Lucas: Ich habe Fieber. Luna: Ich habe Fieber. Lucas: Ich bin erkältet. Luna: Ich bin erkältet. Lucas: Nice. You know, if Fexingo has been helping you make actual progress with German, it really helps if listeners support the show. Lucas: And your friend might say: 'Oh, das tut mir leid.' That means 'I'm sorry to hear that.' Luna: Oh, das tut mir leid. Lucas: Good. So now you can describe your symptoms in German. Practice these phrases, and next time you're at the doctor, you'll be ready. Luna: Thanks for joining us. I'll be practicing 'Ich bin erkältet' all week. Lucas: Yeah, hope you stay healthy.
