- 0:00At some point in life, the individual becomes aware that
- 0:05the former methods of reacting to circumstances and events are
- 0:09not only counterproductive but actually harmful to their own
- 0:14health and well-being and the successful resolution of the
- 0:18situation. Struggling and striving,
- 0:22fighting and reacting, instinctive behaviour and apathy
- 0:27and inertia. All past responses wind up
- 0:31leaving the situation unresolved, the individual
- 0:35exhausted or worn out, or in a state of despair or depression.
- 0:41At that point, the individual begins to mature his
- 0:45understanding and utilize his mental capacity to try to reason
- 0:50through the response, develop a plan of action, and calmly
- 0:55implement that plan. This starts with the passive
- 0:59response of coping, as he is no longer struggling with the
- 1:03situation and has come to a state of readiness to address
- 1:07whatever the cause and circumstance may be.
- 1:10And then as the insight and power expand, it can shift to a
- 1:17status of mastery, where he can have an influence on the
- 1:21circumstances and turn them in a positive direction.
- 1:26True mastery, however, cannot be acquired by use of the mental
- 1:29consciousness, as that is too limited, too narrow in its view,
- 1:35and too weak to actually solve anything comprehensively.
- 1:40It takes the deeper knowledge carried by the psychic
- 1:43consciousness, the sole entity, to truly and fully appreciate
- 1:48the depth, complexity and interactions that make up the
- 1:52current status and to then know the way forward from there, with
- 1:57the confidence and certainty of the soul's guidance in harmony
- 2:01with the spiritual force that is driving force behind the
- 2:06manifestation, Dr. de Lal observes quote.
- 2:12It is with the growth of the mental consciousness that one
- 2:15progressively learns to cope with the various internal and
- 2:19external stresses which every individual experiences in life.
- 2:24The stage of coping which is ushered in by the use of the
- 2:28power of reason and the exercise of mental will in the governance
- 2:33of life is characterized by a certain sense of direction,
- 2:37inner ease, security and confidence.
- 2:42Mastery, as conceived by manager represents a further stage of
- 2:47psychological development when an individual no longer feels
- 2:51preyed upon by internal and external stresses and meets the
- 2:56challenges of life with a clear sense of purpose and with poise
- 3:00and serenity. From the viewpoint of yoga
- 3:03psychology, such a state of mastery pertains to a deeper
- 3:07consciousness than that of the outer being described
- 3:10previously. The deeper consciousness is that
- 3:14of the inner being, the person within who is concealed by the
- 3:18outer being and whom we discover progressively with inner growth.
- 3:23Behind the physical, the vital and the mental parts of the
- 3:27outer being there is an inner or true physical, an inner or true
- 3:32vital, and an inner or true mental which constitute our
- 3:37inner or true being. And behind both the outer and
- 3:41inner being is the inner most being, called by Sri Aurobindo
- 3:46the psychic, the individual soul supporting the mental, vital,
- 3:52physical and psychic evolution of the being.
- 3:55Mastery, from the viewpoint of yoga psychology, begins when an
- 4:00individual, no longer completely identified with the physical,
- 4:05vital, and mental personality of the outer being, learns to live
- 4:09progressively in the deeper consciousness of the person
- 4:12within. The attitudes of the inner
- 4:15consciousness from which such an individual looks at and reacts
- 4:19to everything in life are the subject matter of this book.
- 4:24Cultivating these inner attitudes is an effective means
- 4:27for growing into that deeper consciousness of freedom and
- 4:32mastery. End Quote.
