- 0:08The Book of Ruth begins in dark days, but even
- 0:12in the darkness, God was at work. Through loss,
- 0:15uncertainty, and unexpected turns, we discover a
- 0:19beautiful story of grace, redemption, and hope.
- 0:23Join Scott Pauley for this new study, The Gospel According to
- 0:27Ruth. Light for Dark Days.
- 0:37When you meet someone very special, you want others to meet them too.
- 0:41I, I'm thinking now of the little book of Song of Solomon in our
- 0:45Old Testament, uh, where the, the young damsel falls
- 0:49in love with the king and the shepherd
- 0:53And she begins to spread the word and to tell everybody else, let me tell
- 0:58you about him, let me tell you about him, let me tell you about him,
- 0:59to the point that they say, we want to meet him. Well, don't you know
- 1:03that's exactly what the Lord wants for his people to do,
- 1:06to so know him and love him and speak of him, to tell
- 1:10others, let me tell you about him, let me tell you about what the Lord
- 1:13has done for me, that they desire to know him as well?
- 1:17Well, if you'll permit me today, I'd like to just tell you about him.
- 1:20We're in Ruth chapter number 2, and this is the encounter, uh,
- 1:24the first interaction between Boaz and
- 1:27Ruth. Boaz representing the, the Savior, the means
- 1:31by which salvation comes to this woman, and Ruth the sinner
- 1:35who desperately has needs and needs divine intervention.
- 1:40And they, they come together in Ruth chapter 2. Has there been
- 1:43a day in your life when you met the Lord Jesus, when you met
- 1:47the Savior? The day I met Christ, you know,
- 1:50I wanted to talk about him. Nobody had to beg me to do that.
- 1:52I remember saying that day, I got saved today.
- 1:56I wanted to tell somebody. I think when you really come to know the Lord
- 2:00Jesus, you want to talk about him. Ruth is going to run home shortly and
- 2:04tell Naomi all about him. But in the opening verses of Ruth chapter
- 2:082, we get a little perspective on this,
- 2:11this man Boaz. We've identified him as God's middleman, the man
- 2:15in the middle bringing God's blessing into Ruth's
- 2:19life and bringing Ruth nearer to God's purpose. But what do we know about
- 2:23him? Let me give you a few characteristics. Let me tell you about him.
- 2:26Number 1, in verse number 1, we find that he is mighty.
- 2:30Naomi had a kinsman of her husband's, a mighty man
- 2:34of wealth. A mighty man of wealth.
- 2:38And now the, the might here has several implications.
- 2:42Certainly he's a wealthy man. He has
- 2:46the resources, the means by which he can provide.
- 2:50Let me tell you about my Lord. Let me tell you about my Savior.
- 2:53He's wealthy. He owns the cattle on a thousand hills. My God
- 2:56shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus.
- 3:00Whatever, whatever it is today that you think, well, I,
- 3:04I don't have enough, I have great lack, I want you to know that the
- 3:08God of all provision is more than
- 3:11enough. He is all-sufficient. But the
- 3:15might here is not just a reference to his money.
- 3:18It's really a reference to his entire nature, to his person,
- 3:23because the name Boaz literally means strength
- 3:26and swiftness. I like the, the combination of those 2 because
- 3:31he hurries to help us. He rushes to our
- 3:34aid. He is our mighty Christ, our mighty Savior.
- 3:39Just as Ruth and Naomi were weak,
- 3:43Boaz represents that strength and stability. Let me tell you something,
- 3:46we're all weak, we're all weary, we're all wounded. Lean on the Lord.
- 3:51He is strong. He is the Almighty God. In the previous
- 3:54chapter, Naomi at least twice referenced him as the
- 3:58Almighty, the God of all power. Friend,
- 4:02I want you to know that you may feel today like
- 4:05you cannot move forward, but God has all
- 4:10of the strength that you need. He is the God of plenty.
- 4:13Then let me tell you about him. He's not only mighty, he's gracious.
- 4:18You see, the passage that we're studying twice
- 4:22uses the word grace. In verse 2, Ruth the Moabitess says
- 4:26to Naomi, let me now go to the field and glean ears
- 4:29of corn after him in whose sight I shall find
- 4:34Grace. Do you know what everybody needs? Grace.
- 4:38Every hungry, hurting heart needs one thing. It needs
- 4:41grace. Now come down in the story to verse number 10,
- 4:45when she finally meets Boaz, and Boaz doesn't just let
- 4:49her have a little, he gives her a lot. She falls on her face in
- 4:52verse 10, bows herself to the ground, and said unto him, why have I found
- 4:55grace in thine eyes that thou shouldest take knowledge
- 5:00of me, seeing I'm a stranger? By the way, that's what grace
- 5:03is. God gives grace not because we deserve it,
- 5:08not because we've done anything to be worthy
- 5:11of it. That's why it's grace. You don't earn it.
- 5:14For by grace are you saved through faith, and that not of yourselves.
- 5:19It is the gift of God, not of works, lest any man should boast.
- 5:22Our God is not only mighty, our God is
- 5:26gracious. Look, what difference does it make if he's strong if
- 5:30he's not reaching out to you? What difference does it make if he's wealthy and
- 5:35he's not willing to share that wealth? Our God is not just great,
- 5:39our God is good, and our God is gracious,
- 5:43and our God is giving. Let me tell you about
- 5:46him. Let me tell you about my Savior. Let me tell you about our Redeemer.
- 5:50He is mighty, he is gracious, And then thirdly,
- 5:54this is very important, he's interested. He's interested
- 5:58in you. This is where it gets deeply personal. He inquires in
- 6:02verse number 5 about this woman. He doesn't know her name at this
- 6:06point. Whose damsel is this? Aren't you glad
- 6:10the Lord knows your name? In verse number 10, this is beautiful,
- 6:14uh, she says to him, I found grace in thine eyes that thou
- 6:17shouldest take knowledge of me.
- 6:21She was a stranger. She was a foreigner. She was a Moabitess
- 6:25woman. She was, in the words of scripture, an alien
- 6:29from Israel. But aren't you glad when we were sinners, when we
- 6:33were separated from God, when we were far off, we were enemies,
- 6:37the Lord was interested in us? That in his compassion
- 6:41and care, he, he loved us for who we are?
- 6:45I want to tell you, friend, no matter who you are right now, no matter
- 6:48where you come from or what you have done, our Savior, our Redeemer,
- 6:52represented by the, the deliverer in this story in Ruth chapter 2,
- 6:57is not only mighty and gracious, he is interested in your life.
- 7:02And then one more, he is kind. Did you
- 7:05notice the tenderness, the tone with which he speaks to her
- 7:09in verse 8 and verse 9? Don't, don't go to another field.
- 7:13You just stay here. Abide here fast by my maidens.
- 7:17Let thine eyes be on the field that they do reap, and go after
- 7:21them. Have I not charged the young men that they shall not touch thee?
- 7:25And when you're athirst, go into the vessels and drink of that which the young
- 7:28men have drawn. What kindness is this? He's kind
- 7:32in the way he speaks to us. He's kind
- 7:36in the way He provides for us. Do you see
- 7:39the kindness of our great God? By the way, if you go down
- 7:43further in the story, that kindness continues in verse 13
- 7:47down to verse number 17. Uh, he stops—
- 7:50he, he begins leaving, uh, extra things for her
- 7:55and making additional provision for her. What a
- 7:59kind Savior our Lord Jesus Christ is. Let me tell you about him.
- 8:03Let me tell you about Christ. I'm like, I'm like those early Christians in the
- 8:07book of Acts that could not help but speak the things they had seen and
- 8:10heard. Can I tell you about our heavenly Boaz,
- 8:14our Redeemer? He is mighty to save.
- 8:18He is gracious. He is gracious to people who do not deserve it.
- 8:22He is interested in every one of us,
- 8:26and he is kind in the way he speaks to us and the way He
- 8:30provides for us. Maybe you're listening to me right now and you don't know him.
- 8:35Could I introduce you to him? Could I introduce you to the greatest friend
- 8:38you've ever had? Boaz's name means strength. Ruth's name means
- 8:42friend, companion. She needed a friend. Oh,
- 8:45what a friend we have in Jesus. He's a friend to sinners. Could I introduce
- 8:49you to him today? He will save you. Call on him now. Say, God,
- 8:52be merciful to me, a sinner. Lord, have Have grace.
- 8:56Give me your grace. And God will answer that prayer.
- 8:59Maybe like Naomi, you've wandered from God and you're distant.
- 9:03There's grace for you too. We'll see more about that in this story.
- 9:07Come to know him today, then share him with somebody else. Why don't you find
- 9:11somebody today and just say, let me tell you about him, and introduce someone
- 9:16today to the one who is mighty and gracious and
- 9:19interested and kind. His name is not Boaz.
- 9:23His name is Jesus.
