- 0:12Hello friends, it's shown here. It is Wednesday.
- 0:16It's the middle of the week already.
- 0:18Can you believe it? Here we are.
- 0:20It is the 15th of May and we are back together again to continue
- 0:26this journey. We started yesterday reading
- 0:28through the book of Proverbs. And right at the outset of our
- 0:32journey in Proverbs, let us cover off the one basic faux pas
- 0:38that people continue to make as they read Proverbs.
- 0:40They fall over and land flat on their face as they do this again
- 0:44and again. And my goodness, if you do
- 0:47searches online and read about people's interpretation of
- 0:51Proverbs, this is the thing that people do most often is they
- 0:54mistake Proverbs to be promises and that if you do a God will do
- 1:01be. That is not what Proverbs,
- 1:05proverbs, friends are reflections.
- 1:08They are observations, as the author writes, that from what
- 1:12they have seen in the way the world works when we act in a
- 1:17certain way, they have observed that this consequence generally
- 1:22is the thing that happens. It is not a guaranteed,
- 1:25ironclad, bankable promise that you can shout to God and say why
- 1:31didn't you do this, I did the right thing and you didn't
- 1:34respond the way the proverb said you would.
- 1:36That is not the intention of the author.
- 1:38This is simply encouraging the reader to live in a certain way,
- 1:43and saying that when we do this, this tends to be the thing that
- 1:46happens as a result. And so today we are going to
- 1:50hear all about the benefits of wisdom as this father speaks to
- 1:56his son. So let's do it together, shall
- 1:58we? Let us read together.
- 2:00Proverbs, Chapter 2 My child listened to what I say
- 2:15and treasure my commands. Tune your ears to wisdom and
- 2:20concentrate on understanding. Cry out for insight and ask for
- 2:25understanding. Search for them as you would for
- 2:28silver. Seek them like hidden treasures.
- 2:32Then you will understand what it means to fear the Lord, and you
- 2:37will gain knowledge of God. For the Lord grants wisdom from
- 2:43his mouth. Come knowledge and
- 2:45understanding, he grants a treasure of common sense.
- 2:49To the honest, he is a shield to those who walk with integrity.
- 2:54He gods the pods of the just and protects those who are faithful
- 2:59to him. Then you will understand what is
- 3:02right, just and fair, and you will find the right way to go.
- 3:07For wisdom will enter your heart, and knowledge will fill
- 3:11you with joy. Wise choices will watch over
- 3:14you. Understanding will keep you
- 3:17safe. Wisdom will save you from evil
- 3:20people, from those whose words are twisted.
- 3:23These men turn from the right way to walk down dark paths.
- 3:28They take pleasure in doing wrong, and they enjoy the
- 3:32twisted ways of evil. Their actions are crooked and
- 3:36their wives are wrong. Wisdom will save you from the
- 3:40immoral woman, from the seductive words of the
- 3:44promiscuous woman. She has abandoned her husband
- 3:47and ignores the covenant she made before God.
- 3:51Entering her house leads to death.
- 3:54It is the road to the grave. The man who visits her is
- 3:58doomed. He will never reach the paths of
- 4:01life, so follow the steps of the good to stay on the paths of the
- 4:07righteous, for only the godly will live in the land, and those
- 4:12with integrity will remain in it.
- 4:15But the wicked will be removed from the land, and the
- 4:19treacherous will be uprooted. Our Lord, we hear so clearly the
- 4:34advice given by the author to their student.
- 4:38That's so often the way that feels most enticing.
- 4:43That seems like such a sure bet, or such a simple little thing
- 4:47that surely couldn't be all that bad.
- 4:50Well, those are the things that drag us away from you, that
- 4:54would have us place our faith and our confidence in something
- 4:58other than you and your Lordship over our life.
- 5:03So, Lord, as these temptations come to us each day to draw us
- 5:08away from your way down to the path, not to righteousness, but
- 5:13a folly and of selfish ambition. Our Holy Spirit, I pray that you
- 5:19would transform us, work on our hearts so that we can
- 5:24continually choose you. Our heart can automatically err
- 5:30toward you and your Kingdom. Thank you, Holy Spirit, that you
- 5:36live in us to moment by moment, guide us and prompt us and draw
- 5:42us back to Jesus and Jesus. Thank you for all you have done
- 5:48for us, and it's in your loving and sacrificial name that we can
- 5:52pray all of these things. Oh man.
