- 0:00It's a ongoing mission. There's a, you know, there's
- 0:04Peregrine Lander that's in trouble right now.
- 0:08The lander's in trouble. Let me know if you have any
- 0:13issues hearing my audio as well. We had some issues yesterday, so
- 0:19just want to make sure everything's good, all right?
- 0:24I think everything's good on my end.

- 0:28Actually, if you can hear me, if you can see me, all that stuff.
- 0:31Right now, there's been a loss of propellant from the Peregrine
- 0:35Lander. So the loss of propellant means
- 0:38that they might not be able to do their initial mission, which
- 0:41is land on the moon and conduct science on the moon's surface.
- 0:48It's very unfortunate. It's a really, really
- 0:51interesting mission. But we have to make sure that,
- 0:57you know, I have to make sure that everybody knows what's
- 0:59going on because we're going to continue with this developing
- 1:01story as the news breaks. So about four hours ago,
- 1:06Astrobotic sent out a tweet. It is heartbreaking to hear
- 1:12these things because hundreds of people worked on these, on these
- 1:16missions. You know, there's people that
- 1:18spent long hours, nights, weekends, time away from their
- 1:22family, time away from their loved ones to build these
- 1:26Landers. That this could have been the
- 1:28first commercial lunar Lander that launched on a NASA mission
- 1:35on a ULA rocket on a Vulcan rocket.
- 1:37So let's take a look at this tweet from Astrobotic earlier
- 1:41today. This is about four hours ago
- 1:42Astrobotic tweeted this after successfully separating from
- 1:46United to Launch Alliance Vulcan rocket, Astrobotic Peregrine
- 1:49lunar Lander began receiving telemetry via the NASA Deep
- 1:52Space Network. So that's all good.
- 1:55It's all good stuff. Astrobotic's built avionic
- 1:58systems, including the primary command and data handling unit,
- 2:01as well as the thermal, the propulsion and power controllers
- 2:05all powered on and performed as expected.
- 2:07Great news. Right after successful
- 2:10propulsion systems activation, Peregrid entered a fully
- 2:13operational state. Unfortunately, an anomaly
- 2:17occurred which prevented Astrobotic from achieving a
- 2:19stable sun. Pointing orientation.
- 2:23So they have to make sure that they continue to get power on
- 2:26their way to the moon. So that's why the sun pointing
- 2:29orientation is is great because they have you know solar on
- 2:33their side there and the team is responding in real time as the
- 2:36situation unfolds and will be providing updates as data is
- 2:39obtained and analyzed. So couple hours go by, their
- 2:44teams did all the data crunching.
- 2:47Everything looks OK I guess, but they continued working
- 2:53throughout the day. That was a couple hours ago.
- 2:55Now we continue to gather data in a report, our best assessment
- 2:58of what we see. The team believes that the
- 3:00likely cause of the unstable sun pointing is a propulsion anomaly
- 3:03that, if proven true, threatens the ability of the spacecraft to
- 3:08soft. Land on the moon.
- 3:10So a hard landing on the moon is very bad.
- 3:13We don't want to see a hard landing on the moon.
- 3:15Hard landing on the moon basically means they crash into
- 3:18the moon, and that's not good for any sort of science that's
- 3:21supposed to happen. It's Astrobotic Lander now, as
- 3:24the team fights to troubleshoot the issues, spacecraft battery
- 3:28is reaching operational low levels.
- 3:30This is just a whirlwind of emotions here, I'm sure.
- 3:33With their team. Just before entering a known
- 3:35period of communication outage, the team developed and executed
- 3:39an improvised maneuver to reorient the sun, the solar
- 3:41panels, toward the Sun so they can get more power to the Lander
- 3:47as it's on its way to the moon. Shortly after this maneuver, the
- 3:50spacecraft entered an expected period of communication loss.
- 3:53So could you imagine if you're part of this team and you're
- 3:58pointing you have you have an anomaly where the the Lander
- 4:02can't point itself towards its power source.
- 4:05It needs power in order to do the operations on its way to the
- 4:10moon, right? It needs to charge the batteries
- 4:12and needs to do all the things on the way to the moon and make
- 4:14sure everything's, you know, cool.
- 4:18And then shortly after the maneuver, the spacecraft entered
- 4:21an experience period of communication loss.
- 4:23So after you fix this thing right afterwards, you don't know
- 4:28what's going on because there's no communication.
- 4:30Communication loss will provide more updates as Peregrine comes
- 4:33in view of the ground station again.
- 4:36So the over time you know there's certain ground stations
- 4:40that they have to communicate with here on Earth in order to
- 4:45send the data to the team so the team can make corrections or fix
- 4:49things on their way to the moon. So then a little bit of time
- 4:52happens, about an hour happens and they release this we've
- 4:57we've successfully re established communications with
- 5:00the Paragon after the known communication blackout.
- 5:02So this was the communication. Blackout was, of course, it was
- 5:05a known thing. They knew this was going to
- 5:07happen, this part of the mission.
- 5:09The team's improvised maneuver was successful in reorienting
- 5:12Peregrine solar array towards the sun.
- 5:14We're now charging the battery. So yes, good mission.
- 5:18Anomaly Board continues to evaluate the data we're
- 5:20receiving and is assessing the status of what we believe to be
- 5:23the root of the anomaly, a failure within the propulsion
- 5:26system. And that's what they said in the
- 5:30first tweet down here. Successful propulsion systems
- 5:35activation, Paragon entered a fully operational state.
- 5:38Unfortunately, an anomaly occurred which prevent an
- 5:40Astrobotic. So the propulsion.
- 5:43Orients things in space. So however you have to propel
- 5:47yourself to get to the certain point so the the solar panels
- 5:51can point towards the sun. That's what they needed to do
- 5:56and they figured it out as they went through the operation.
- 6:02Basically it's a it's a warning like hey, this thing's
- 6:04happening, it's bad. So how do we fix it?
- 6:07So their their team's got on it, they reoriented it, the the
- 6:10charger was starting was starting with the battery and
- 6:15the Anomaly board continued working on what happened.
- 6:21Going over the data, they basically have a bunch of data,
- 6:24thousands of lines of data. You have to crunch all that data
- 6:28in real time, mind you, because this isn't something that you
- 6:31can just put down, like grab a cup of coffee and go to Dunkin'
- 6:35Donuts, you know, and go for lunch or anything.
- 6:37No, this is like. You.
- 6:39Are right there because up until you fix this issue, you're not
- 6:44going anywhere. None of the team is leaving, so
- 6:47they have to do this. The Anomaly board is working on
- 6:49this super hard, evaluating the data and assessing the status of
- 6:53what. We believe to be the root.
- 6:54Of the anomaly a failure within the propulsion system.
- 6:57So if there's a failure. Within the propulsion system,
- 7:04then the soft landing may not occur.
- 7:08And if the soft landing doesn't occur, that means a hard landing
- 7:12will occur. If a hard landing occurs, they
- 7:16lose the whole thing. So if they lose the whole
- 7:21Lander, all the science that was on.
- 7:23Board, there's actually this part of this mission was sending
- 7:30people's ashes to the moon as well.
- 7:33So that's that's going to be lost as well.
- 7:36I mean, they'll get to the moon, but not the way they wanted to.
- 7:41So. So Astrobotic continues to go
- 7:44on. We are grateful for the
- 7:45outpouring of support we've received.
- 7:48From messages on social media to phone calls and helping hands,
- 7:51this one makes the space industry so special that we
- 7:53unite in the face of adversity. A heartfelt thank you from the
- 7:56entire Peregrine Mission One team, so Tori Bruno, ULA
- 8:01President in a tweet said. Hey, we're here for you.
- 8:06Whatever you need from the ULA team, we're open to help you
- 8:09out, figure out this, figure out what's going on.
- 8:12So the whole ULA team, super talented people, very
- 8:17intelligent, smart people, of course, like if they're there to
- 8:20help, they're there to help. So Astrobotic has the whole,
- 8:23like other teams from other companies, you know, like other
- 8:27people that may know something they don't know or may have some
- 8:31sort of insight that they might not catch up, you know, catch on
- 8:34to or whatever. They could get some help from
- 8:36outside sources. Everybody's helping basically
- 8:39because we want this thing to go to the moon, right?
- 8:41This is the first lunar Lander since basically the Apollo era,
- 8:46so US lunar Lander, I should say.
- 8:49So they want this thing to work. They want it to touch down on
- 8:52the moon softly, and they want to be able to do their mission
- 8:56because it's part of the Artemis program.
- 8:59And you know it it has some really important things for the
- 9:03Artemis program. To study the the lunar surface.
- 9:08Before people get there. Right, so let's move on to the
- 9:12next update, Update #4. It says.
- 9:14Unfortunately, it appears the failure within the propulsion
- 9:17system is causing a critical loss of propellant.
- 9:22The team is working to try and stabilize this loss, but given
- 9:24the situation, we have prioritized maximizing the
- 9:28science and data we can capture. So at this point seems like
- 9:33there's some seems like there's some sort of propellant failure.
- 9:44So what this means is they can't use the propellant to do what
- 9:50they need to do at this point. Team is working to stabilize the
- 9:54loss. Basically they have tanks with
- 9:56repellent in them. You know, if there's any sort of
- 9:58leak in their tanks or any sort of like gasket or anything,
- 10:01there's like little pieces of rubber that keep things in
- 10:03place. This is the.
- 10:04First launch of this thing too. This is an experimental craft,
- 10:07by the way, So this isn't this isn't a, you know, this isn't
- 10:12something that they've launched a bunch of them, you know, this
- 10:14is the first one and the only one.
- 10:17So what they're doing now is they're trying to figure out
- 10:20what else they can. Do on their way to the moon.
- 10:25On the way the moon to make sure that they get something out of
- 10:29this right they might I I don't know what the orbit right now I
- 10:33don't know. They should be.
- 10:35Set as far as going to the Moon is concerned, but what other
- 10:39missions can they succeed in on their way to the moon?
- 10:42It seems like according to this, you know the propulsion system
- 10:47is a critical loss of propellant, so all their
- 10:50propellant is. If it's critical, it means most
- 10:53of their propellant is probably gone, or a significant amount of
- 10:57their propellant has escaped, or something in the propulsion
- 11:03system somewhere got clogged up. So it seems like if they can
- 11:08maximize the way that the propellant is handled within the
- 11:13craft if there's a shut off valve of some sort that they
- 11:16can. I'm not sure how the structure
- 11:17is inside the the craft itself if there's fail safes with these
- 11:22things. With this particular Lander, not
- 11:26100% sure. Most times they do have some
- 11:29sort of fail safe, but it seems like what they've how they
- 11:33posted this is that they have a significant critical loss of
- 11:39propelling. And when it's, say, critical, it
- 11:41means it's gone, probably so, and there's no way to get it
- 11:45back and they probably can't recapture it.
- 11:47So they can use it to propel themselves to the moon or for a
- 11:51soft landing. So what do they do on the way
- 11:53there? And that's what they're figuring
- 11:55out now. We have prioritized maximizing
- 11:58the science and data we can capture.
- 11:59We're currently assessing what alternative mission profiles may
- 12:02be. Feasible at this time.
- 12:05So whatever they can do between now and when they when the
- 12:09mission is totally done, we don't know when that'll be, you
- 12:14know? As far as I know this is about
- 12:15an hour ago, so let me let me refresh this real quick, see if
- 12:19they had anything else. No, that's about about one hour
- 12:23ago is the last update. Let's see if they have anything
- 12:26on their website, maybe there's maybe they might have posted
- 12:29something on their website. So if that's the case now, it's
- 12:33still number. Four, we're currently assessing
- 12:36what alternative mission profiles may be feasible at this
- 12:39time. So track the mission.
- 12:43I mean temperatures, radiation, things like that.
- 12:48Maybe. You know and the The thing is
- 12:56there might not be enough enough sensors to really do like a
- 13:05really in depth mission here. So yeah I'm not I'm not sure
- 13:10what they could do on the way like on their way out there.
- 13:12So yeah, it's it just seems like it's almost it's almost lost.
- 13:20At this point, which is unfortunate, So they also have,
- 13:23they also have a Griffin Lunar Lander.
- 13:26So the Peregrine Lander that we're talking about today is
- 13:28about the height of a human, so like.
- 13:32About four. Humans wide and like the height
- 13:35of like a normal person, like 58510 something like that.
- 13:39So maybe 6 feet tall some somewhere on there.
- 13:43So right now, the Peregrine Lander seems like it does have,
- 13:50might have some sort of, could probably do some sort of.
- 13:59I don't know what they could do. I mean to be honest with you to
- 14:04get to get some data they're going to have to update us with
- 14:06that. But it's going to be a, it's
- 14:10going to be a tough one. They have thermal controls in
- 14:11it. So like, of course they can,
- 14:14They can check the, you know, the heat in the.
- 14:18What's what's going on with the payloads?
- 14:20Things like that. So they have, they have the
- 14:22ability to monitor everything that's in there, but I don't
- 14:29know what. Else they could do other than
- 14:31getting into lunar orbit and figuring out what else they, you
- 14:36know, at this point like they're not going to land this thing.
- 14:39I don't think so. They're going to get into.
- 14:41Like a lunar orbit, Lunar orbit 2, lunar orbit 3.
- 14:44They're going to get really close.
- 14:45To the moon, hopefully. And then maybe they're going to,
- 14:49I mean, if they do crash this in the moon, maybe they could get
- 14:51some valuable data about moon like lunar entry, but if they
- 14:56don't have the propellant to make it.
- 14:59Even feasible to do a soft landing.
- 15:02Why would they? I mean, I don't know.
- 15:04Why would they crash it into the moon?
- 15:09Yeah? So it's a it's a tough thing.
- 15:14For the, for the. Astrobotics team just tucking it
- 15:19back into Earth is foolish. Yeah.
- 15:21I mean they could if they have enough propellants.
- 15:24So that's the other thing too is if they Yeah shifter that's a
- 15:28that's a great. That's a great point if they
- 15:31just like burn it back up in the atmosphere into the Earth's
- 15:33atmosphere, it seems like it would be a very unless there's
- 15:39no hope for it, you know, if they if they can't collect any
- 15:41more data. And if there's nothing else they
- 15:44can do with it, probably that might be their best bet.
- 15:47Because you don't really want to crash a bunch of stuff on the
- 15:49moon. You don't want to litter up the
- 15:51moon. Yeah, data is much data
- 15:56gathering. Yeah, Simon, I agree with you.
- 15:58Data gathering, you know, just do as much get all the data
- 16:03because even though we have Artemis 2 going up soon, we had.
- 16:06Artemis one which collected a bunch of data, went around the
- 16:09moon, came back. Artemis 2 will have sent people.
- 16:13And of course there's other sensors on Artemis 2.
- 16:16But this is the first US Lander with with enough sensors that it
- 16:22could gather some data on the way to the moon.
- 16:23So we're trying to gather. I'm also trying to gather some
- 16:26data about the sensors. So.
- 16:31Maybe you know. Whatever they can do to flood it
- 16:36with data, I guess before before they do, what are they going to
- 16:42do with this thing? Like maybe they have enough
- 16:44propellant to send it over the ocean and burn up back in the
- 16:46Earth's atmosphere. Or send it in a, you know, a
- 16:50solar orbit, you know, something like send it towards the sun.
- 16:54I mean, that would be kind of cool too.
- 16:56You know there's a high gain antenna on it, so there's a
- 16:58possibility they can just send it towards the sun and just
- 17:02continue. Just what?
- 17:04Get as much data as you can on the way to the sun.
- 17:11Be like, hey, you know what? We're not a lunar Lander
- 17:12anymore, we're a Sunlander. But.
- 17:14We're not going to land. We're just going to burn up.
- 17:16So it's a it's tough, you know what do you guys think in chat?

- 17:46The initial few hours of this mission, because it launched
- 17:49early this morning, I was going to stream it and like do a live,
- 17:52you know, live watch along, but it was like 1:30 in the morning
- 17:57when the. You know when it all started.
- 17:59So I would have been dead tired. So that's one of the reasons why
- 18:05I didn't do it last night. It's like, man, I got, I got so
- 18:08much stuff to do, so I couldn't, I couldn't do that.
- 18:12OK, so here I'm getting some data as far as their orbits and
- 18:22things. So trying to figure out where
- 18:28they are right now, like tracking where they are right
- 18:30now. So you know of course anything
- 18:35that goes to the to the moon as well is very contamination
- 18:39controlled. So if they do end up crashing it
- 18:42out of the surface of the moon, there's more than likely no way
- 18:47for it to contaminate the moon with, say, like organisms.
- 18:51Of some sort. Could it study radiation near
- 18:57Earth radiation? Yeah, I mean that that's you
- 19:03know some radiation would be nice because if there is some
- 19:05radiation, I should say some radiation studies would be nice
- 19:09because if they do study the radiation properly, they could
- 19:13send some data back-to-back to NASA, even though NASA has ton
- 19:18of data on the stuff already. But the Van Allen belt, things
- 19:20like that versus magnetic field. I don't know if.
- 19:26They have things on there for the magnetic field, but probably
- 19:29radiation, Yeah, I'm not sure. Interplanetary.
- 19:36OK, so there's a little bit of information here.
- 19:39Interplanetary radiation environment occurs in the region
- 19:41outside the shielding effects of Earth's magnetic field.
- 19:44An ionizing dosage of one rad per day is predicted there based
- 19:47on the expected electron radiation per Earth Day.
- 19:51So. If they could.
- 19:54An ionized dosage of one rad per day is predicated or predicted.
- 19:59Sorry. So if they could just get some.
- 20:01Math on that that would. Be kind of cool too.
- 20:03Figure out what the. Radiation is as well, yeah, it

- 25:20kind of science and data you can do?
- 25:22What kind of stuff can you maximize during your mission?
- 25:25That's a tough one, man. That's so tough because it seems
- 25:30like it would be a like a given that they would already be doing
- 25:35these things on their way to the moon.
- 25:37But also these systems are like they're very specific.
- 25:41Some of these systems are very specific like they they take X
- 25:43amount of power and that's it. Like they can't do more power
- 25:48than that on their way to the moon because they have to save
- 25:50this power and because they're charging a certain amount on
- 25:54their way to the moon and they have to use certain systems
- 25:55certain times and hit these key, you know these these marks
- 26:00basically on their way to the moon.
- 26:02And then when they get them to the moon they have to use X
- 26:06amount of power to land and propulse propulsive landing.
- 26:10So what can they it's kind of like.
- 26:13Divert the power. The to the thrusters or to like
- 26:16the Shields, You know, like in Star Trek or whatever.
- 26:20You know, give it your all or whatever.
- 26:21You know, it seems like that's where they're at right now.
- 26:24Like how do we how do we get the most out of this mission?
- 26:28But it's going to be it's going to be tough because it it's just
- 26:34kind. It's just a bummer, man.

- 27:22involved with these missions just gets a job and then starts
- 27:24making stuff for space, right? Like, you have to be building
- 27:29your career for years in order to to do this, right?
- 27:33So there's a possibility some of these people have been working
- 27:37in these systems and working for other companies and things for
- 27:41like decades. You know, very veteran people
- 27:44that have been working on these systems for decades and you
- 27:47spent the last years of your life building this thing.
- 27:52And you're on your way to the moon.
- 27:54You know, you have a perfect launch ULA.
- 27:56Perfect launch. And I was surprised that.
- 28:00I mean, I wasn't surprised that the ULA launch usually the ULA.
- 28:02Launches are great. But I was surprised that the new
- 28:07rocket. Never, never did it.
- 28:09Before. It was the.
- 28:10You know and their first tweet here UL as Vulcan rocket.
- 28:14Of course, like new engines and everything.
- 28:17Never tested. Like to go to go to space?
- 28:21First launch ever works perfectly, sends the, sends the
- 28:25Lander off to the moon, and then the Lander has issues.
- 28:29So there's people that were working on the Lander all like,
- 28:32for their whole life, you know, working on their part of it.
- 28:37Whatever it is. And maybe you know, there are
- 28:39new people as well. So maybe you're, you know, you
- 28:41get into the company late or, you know, maybe you just
- 28:44graduate college or whatever. Or you're like a Wiz.
- 28:47Kid, you get out of high school and you're just like pretty good
- 28:50at this stuff. You should hire me.
- 28:51And then they get a contract from NASA.
- 28:55You know, it's just, it's a whole thing.
- 28:56So instead of, you know, thinking about it like a robot,
- 29:00it's not the robot that we think about, it's the people that put
- 29:02their their lives into this thing.
- 29:07I think, and I think this is a fable I want, I I want to say
- 29:10this is real, but I think it's probably not real.
- 29:13But there's a story. I think it's Van Gogh, Vincent
- 29:16van Gogh, the artist that he was sitting in A and I think this is
- 29:20totally fake. I thought like probably fake,
- 29:23but he was sitting in a a park like sketching something or
- 29:29painting or something and somebody walked up to him and
- 29:32said, oh, you're Vincent van Gogh, the famous artist guy.
- 29:34And he goes, yes, that's me. And then they say, hey, can you,
- 29:38can you draw me something? And then Vincent van Gogh drew
- 29:42them one line in the in the park, like just a squiggly line.
- 29:48But the guy was like, that's it, just one line.
- 29:53And Van Gogh looked at him and said in a paraphrasing here
- 29:58because nobody really knows if this happened.
- 30:02Vincent van Gogh goes like. Yeah, it took me my whole life.
- 30:06To learn how to draw that line, just like that.
- 30:09So these people that are working on these systems, Peregrine
- 30:14Mission systems, they've been working their whole lives to get
- 30:18to this point to send their robotic Lander to the moon.
- 30:23And if it doesn't make it, it's going to be heartbreaking.
- 30:28It's so sad. It's going to be so sad for
- 30:29everybody involved, but also for the the overall Space Flight
- 30:33community. Because we all want this thing
- 30:35to land like I you know, as much as there's tribalism and.
- 30:39Weird, like, people are weird, right?
- 30:42And I'm going off in a little tangent, but we'll get back to
- 30:44Paragon in a second. Because you know, when people
- 30:48are weird and they they talk about, you know, X company
- 30:53versus Y company or whatever. No, it's not like that.
- 30:58Like you want to make sure that every launch provider is good.
- 31:04When you want every mission to succeed, you know, as they say
- 31:07or as they used to say, I don't know if anybody says it anymore,
- 31:09but like hashtag team space, like that's a real thing.
- 31:12People are really invested in each other's.
- 31:17You know in. Each other's success.
- 31:19So right here with this tweet, Peregrine Systems Peregrine
- 31:24Lander from Astrobotic. We're grateful for the
- 31:26outpouring of support we're receiving from messages on
- 31:28social media to. Phone calls and helping hands.
- 31:31So. Everybody in the industry.
- 31:33Has reached out to them and said.
- 31:34Go, go, go. Let's, like, please make this
- 31:37work somehow. We have everything.
- 31:39We're at your disposal, Astrobotic, so they know how
- 31:43important this is. To get people back to the moon
- 31:47and to get Landers back to the moon.
- 31:49So, you know, it's the it's the years and years of dedication
- 31:53and you know the. Systems that they build.
- 31:56It's great, you know, but. It's about the people at the at
- 32:02the other end, you know, that are doing this.
- 32:04So yeah, it's. Of course, people.
- 32:08Are going to help them out? It it seems like it's a no
- 32:10brainer, right? Like people are going to help
- 32:12them out. It's a NASA mission like.
- 32:14Who wouldn't want to help? NASA out, right?
- 32:16Like, of course, like anything that.
- 32:18I mean, I can't do anything for them because I'm not a I'm not a
- 32:20rocket scientist. I'm not a not an engineer.
- 32:22I don't. I don't make lunar Landers.
- 32:27But I can at least, you know share some information with you
- 32:30and like keep you updated, do what?
- 32:32Do my part which is like just do this, like have a little podcast
- 32:36kind of situation about it. So yeah, so that's the like as
- 32:42of right now, Astrobotic, they haven't posted anything in about
- 32:46an hour. So it's going to be, it's going
- 32:53to be a story that's going to be.
- 32:54Developing throughout the day. So we're I'm going to keep you
- 32:59updated as much as I can with that sort of situation, Info
- 33:05Guide said. Like Starling said, like they
- 33:06need to start mass producing a Lander with a standard set of
- 33:09equipment and instruments on them, send 20 plus of them to
- 33:12different locations on the moon. That would be pretty.
- 33:16Cool. Actually, it's a great idea.
- 33:19How can you do that to scale? Can make money on it, though,
- 33:25because these are commercial Landers like NASA hired
- 33:27Astrobotic to do this Lander for them.
- 33:30NASA didn't build this Lander. It's a NASA mission.
- 33:33But Astrobotic built the Lander. How do you do that to scale and
- 33:38make money? Because NASA will be your only
- 33:41client mainly. But I I think what they're doing
- 33:47and I what they are doing with the Artemis.
- 33:49Program and other programs from around the world are they're
- 33:53trying to make a lunar economy. So whether it's shuttling things
- 33:58to the moon or people to the moon or, you know, getting data
- 34:02and science from and to the moon, they're trying to build
- 34:05that out right now. The infrastructure for that Blue
- 34:07Origins doing a SpaceX is doing all the other companies doing
- 34:09Astrobotic, etcetera. They're all doing it, and maybe
- 34:13that's a maybe that's a good idea.
- 34:15Info guides to make this like make a a standard, sort of like
- 34:19foundational. Template for some of these
- 34:24Landers, like a Starlink like you said.
- 34:28Yeah, that. That would be.
- 34:29That's a really great idea actually.
- 34:32So and then you know you can lease that technology or
- 34:36whatever if you get the, you know if you get the foundation
- 34:39of it. You get the framework.
- 34:41I understand this because I as a so I'm a I've been a coder for,
- 34:48I don't know, 15 years. So I understand the use of a
- 34:52foundation or some sort of template to start with, right?
- 34:57And then basically you know, you build upon this, the open
- 35:01source, whatever that you're building on, you know, whether
- 35:04back in the day it was Bootstrap or Foundation or you know React
- 35:07GS now or you know whatever it is.
- 35:09Somebody builds the. Foundation for these things.
- 35:11And then other people build upon that foundation and just send
- 35:15stuff. Just send it, man, to send it to
- 35:17the moon. And then what you do with it is
- 35:19up to you. So of course you have to make a
- 35:23business out of it so you can make money so you can feed your
- 35:25families and all that stuff and pay your rent and insurance and
- 35:29what send your kids to college whatever.
- 35:31But the I think that's a that's a phenomenal idea.
- 35:37I wonder. I'll have to look into this a
- 35:39little bit, but there's got to be somebody out there who'd be
- 35:42willing to do that work and then open source it for everybody to
- 35:47use. And to say this is how you build
- 35:50it and here's all the specs go crazy, you know, like go for it
- 35:56dude. And then people would start
- 35:58building on it, I think. That's what, blue.
- 35:59Origin is kind of doing too. They want to build a framework
- 36:02and a foundation for everything else.
- 36:05But I I think. There is an opportunity there
- 36:10for somebody to do this, but it seems like there's a lot of
- 36:13money that could be, it could be.
- 36:16Like changing hands, too Brag. You call me live.
- 36:21I know, right? Last couple times I've done
- 36:23this, I'm like, where's Bob at? But yeah, it's tough because
- 36:27today was a weird one because it's just all over the place.
- 36:32Peregrine Lander, I think we lost her.
- 36:36And I think, I think think it's gone.
- 36:38They're going to get as much data as they can.
- 36:39And then there's going there's no propulsion system.
- 36:43Causing a critical loss of propellant.
- 36:45No propellant in that thing. So I think we're going to, I
- 36:47think we're going to lose this thing just.
- 36:49How do we? Lose it.
- 36:50And how much can we gain from it before we lose it?
- 36:53That's the question. So if you're a fan of SpaceX and
- 36:56you're a fan of the Starship program, you kind of know what
- 36:59this is all about. You set up a test like you set
- 37:02up a Starship, and whatever it is, any data you gather from it
- 37:06is good data. Unfortunately this was a NASA
- 37:10mission, so they had some NASA, you know, NASA criteria that
- 37:13they. Were supposed to meet, but NASA
- 37:15also knows, and everybody involved with this knows, that
- 37:18it's not. Going to be.
- 37:20Perfect every time, and they know that there's a a.
- 37:22Huge. Risk every time.
- 37:23You just go for it. You know when it's a calculated
- 37:27risk. And you know these.
- 37:29Systems A back and forth. You you've been working on them
- 37:32for years. But you know.
- 37:34There's that slight risk that the propulsion system could go
- 37:37bad. Critical loss of propellant.
- 37:40And they're trying to stabilize that loss.
- 37:42But yeah, it's it's a it's a sad day for Astrobotic and for the
- 37:48Space Flight community. Start sending blocks of ice and
- 37:51some dirt that can grow stuff. Oh.
- 37:54Some tents too, you want to send that?
- 37:56To the moon. So you could send blocks of ice.
- 38:01Well, there's already ice on the moon, though, so could we just
- 38:04land? I mean, that's what Artemis is
- 38:06doing. They're just landing where the
- 38:07ice is, but. Maybe not tents.
- 38:12Maybe you need something a little bit more, you know, more,
- 38:15a little bit thicker than a tent if NASA funds a project.
- 38:21Don't they own the intellectual property?
- 38:22Rights. In some instances yes, but if
- 38:27you have a commercial program. So say if.
- 38:33Like a really good example, they're using a a SpaceX
- 38:36Starship to land on the moon. For Artemis 3 and they will not
- 38:41own the intellectual property rights for that Starship ever.
- 38:47The SpaceX zones, those intellectual property rights.
- 38:52Why did they don't use nuclear? Batteries, Andre says.
- 38:56That's a really difficult question to answer, but it's
- 39:02also a question that needs to be asked because I like that
- 39:09nuclear propulsion is something that they're actually working on
- 39:12right now. There's another they're they're
- 39:14trying to figure out systems for a nuclear powered propulsion
- 39:18system for a NASA rocket. But the reason why most NASA
- 39:22rockets or other rockets aren't nuclear propulsed is because
- 39:28it's not 100% safe. Like, say, if something happens
- 39:33during a like a nuclear rocket launch and the whole thing, you
- 39:38know, just doesn't work, you know a Rudd on the pad is.
- 39:42Really. Bad is very, very bad.
- 39:45So if they can guarantee that nothing's going to happen to
- 39:49that propulsion system if it's nuclear, then.
- 39:52They might get public support, but people are.
- 39:54Afraid of it. Like that's part of it.
- 39:56Like that's part of it, so. Yeah, that's the it's it's a
- 40:01it's a tough sell for people. Basically your product would be
- 40:10the. Lander, no instruments, and then
- 40:11you license and sell individual instrument spots.
- 40:14Oh. Someone wants to send a stuffed
- 40:17animal if they buy a slut, make mount, make a mount for it.
- 40:21That's what like Astrobotic actually had some this Paragon
- 40:26Lander. Let me see if I can find their
- 40:27page on that their payload page. Let's see so we can take a look
- 40:34at it. Cuz they have a whole.
- 40:36Plan your mission thing, Yeah, they have a whole thing where?
- 40:46You just like go through a. Like the structure of the.
- 40:51Power. Communications, propulsion,
- 40:54don't want to talk about that right now.
- 40:57Payload, accommodations, programs, interface options
- 40:59accommodate a wide range of payload types on a single
- 41:02mission from companies, government, universities,
- 41:04nonprofits and individuals. They have an above deck views of
- 41:08the horizon in the sky, below deck views of the lunar surface
- 41:12and enclosure deck proximity to the lunar surface.
- 41:14So they have some, they have some spots on their on their in
- 41:21their payloads, the decks that are for different things, so 90
- 41:25kilogram payload Max are mass capacity and they have a lunar
- 41:29Lander user guide which is pretty intense and very, very
- 41:35large. So you know you do a a services
- 41:40agreement, you integrate your stuff into their into their
- 41:43Lander. So it's it's similar to what you
- 41:46were saying, small class Lander that precisely and safely
- 41:50delivers payload to lunar orbit and lunar surface payloads can
- 41:53be mounted above or below the decks, inside or outside of
- 41:55enclosures and can remain attached or deployed according
- 41:59to their. Needs.
- 42:01So if you need to deploy something you know you can
- 42:06mount. What if you?
- 42:08Just bought a GoPro and you're like, hey, can you send this
- 42:11GoPro to the moon? Yeah, maybe not.
- 42:15You mean a GoPro probably wouldn't work because you're
- 42:17never going to get the footage back.
- 42:19Maybe if you. Have some sort of other camera
- 42:22system involved. You know, build your own space
- 42:26camera, basically. That might be.
- 42:31That would be a neat actual way to send a payload.
- 42:34It's like semi. It's kind of light, yeah.
- 42:45Every, every no makes you closer to a yes.
- 42:48And every right is one step closer to a mission complete.

- 42:52The Lander would be a service that makes sense, yeah.

- 44:06So as somebody who understands. The the cost of this not only in
- 44:17dollars and cents and you know, like real money, but the cost of
- 44:23putting together teams and systems and being, you know.
- 44:28I I was the boss like I was the the lead developer of a bunch of
- 44:34projects for a couple companies. And I know how hard it is to put
- 44:38these teams together and what they go through, what these
- 44:40people go through. So I understand the late nights
- 44:45and I understand working for months on end to get one tiny
- 44:50thing perfect and then it if something fails, you know that
- 44:55that's just a it's a horrible thing to go through.
- 45:00Yeah, I I really hope they can figure out some other science to
- 45:05do, because at this point it seems like.
- 45:10They may have lost. The the Lander, we can't use
- 45:14them. Once they're, then we can sell
- 45:16them. Yeah, I mean, if the.
- 45:17So that's a that's a really great idea.
- 45:19I like the idea of a reusable, maybe not reusable, but a
- 45:23reusable system. Like a systems are something
- 45:27that everybody could kind of tap into for Landers eventually.
- 45:32You know, a framework for people to.
- 45:34Use, you know. Like, kind of like a car frame,
- 45:37you know, But you send it to the moon or you send it out into,
- 45:40you know, space someplace, but. That would be.
- 45:44That would be. Really great way to scale this
- 45:46economy. It's like, hey, we have this
- 45:48thing, we know it works because we've launched it a few times,
- 45:52come on board, but that's how people make money.
- 45:55Like that's the business of having Landers and that's the,
- 45:59that's the business of like the outer space business, you know
- 46:02the Space Flight business is. We have a platform that you can
- 46:05use. To send something somewhere like
- 46:08That's why rocket companies exist.
- 46:11ULA exists like that SpaceX Falcon 9, like Falcon 9, is a
- 46:14platform for people to send things to the.
- 46:17You know to low Earth orbit and beyond so send people up to the
- 46:21ISS etcetera. But that's like, you know, if
- 46:27they could, if they could figure out a way to, I mean like.
- 46:29Not open source or rocket because that would be insane,
- 46:31but open source platform for for Landers would be really neat and
- 46:38that people could build on it, you know, And I'm sure there's
- 46:40things like that in the industry, you know, in the
- 46:44engineering side of it, you know, like they know what things
- 46:47work and what things don't work, so they can build on those
- 46:50things. But if somebody were to build
- 46:51like, here's the Lander legs, here's the platform, here's the
- 46:55structure. We're going to give you all the.
- 46:59Plans and you just go wild with it.
- 47:01So just open source it would be insane, would be so crazy or you
- 47:07know whatever fee you know like a like residual.
- 47:13Fee would be pretty cool too. We're getting into the business
- 47:15of it. But Peregrine is one of those
- 47:19companies that got hired by NASA to send stuff to the moon,
- 47:22because they do have a platform for that.
- 47:24The Peregrine Lander is a platform for NASA.

- 47:38By doing so, they may have drifted off trajectory for lunar

- 47:48reoriented towards the sun, which is great because then they
- 47:52can get power, they can get their batteries charged.
- 47:56But by doing so, their propulsion system has been it's
- 48:00critical loss of propellant. It's totally malfunctioned and
- 48:03they can't get it back. So yeah, it seems like maybe
- 48:09this mission may be done. And it's unfortunate.

- 50:27So there's a few things on the Astrobotic scientific payload.
- 50:32Let's see what what we have in here laser reflector array.
- 50:36So let me ask this to you Chad. So as I go through these parts
- 50:40of these payloads, let me know what you think about them using
- 50:44these because if they can't use their their normal mission,
- 50:48which is landing on the moon and using these, what could they use
- 50:51these for? Let me take a drink because
- 50:55talking for 45 minutes hurts my throat.
- 50:58Oh, they have a they have a laser retro reflector array.
- 51:02The LRA provides marker for future assets to determine
- 51:08precise locations. So basically they're going to
- 51:10land this thing on the moon and then they're going to use it to
- 51:14reflect lasers. And let's see, this enables
- 51:18precision laser ranging, which is a measurement of the distance
- 51:21between the orbiting or landing spacecraft to the LRA on the
- 51:24Lander. LRA is a passive optical
- 51:26instrument and will function as a permanent fiducial, IE
- 51:30location marker on the moon for decades to come.
- 51:34That's probably not going to. Make it to.
- 51:36The Moon neutron spectrometer system, the NSS instrument.
- 51:41Let me see if I can bring this up for you.
- 51:43So we can actually do this together.

- 52:01That's not gonna work because it has to be on the moon surface
- 52:03and they can't really just jettison it into space and use
- 52:05it. Neutron spectrometer system will
- 52:08determine the abundance of hydrogen bearing materials and
- 52:11the bulk regulith composition at the landing site, so that's out
- 52:15of the question. Let me zoom in a little bit on
- 52:17this one. Linear Energy Transfer
- 52:22Spectrometer. During the exploration missions
- 52:25outside of the Earth's protective atmosphere, exposure
- 52:27to space radiation has a detrimental effect on the health
- 52:30of astronauts. Lunar surface environments
- 52:33present a greater radiation risk to the astronaut than low Earth
- 52:35orbit. These are.
- 52:37New source of radiation risk for lunar surface environments.
- 52:40The first source of risk is the total radiation dose from
- 52:43galactic cosmic rays is about twice as high on the lunar
- 52:47surface as low Earth orbit A radiation sensor.
- 52:50Maybe. Maybe they can activate this
- 52:54while there's, you know, flying in whatever configuration
- 52:59they're doing right now. So let me know in the chat if
- 53:03you think that might be a good idea, if they can like measure

- 55:48system will measure surface and subsurface hydration.

- 55:54moon, they can't use this, unfortunately.
- 55:59Yeah, So reflectors are used to precisely measure the distance
- 56:03to the moon. They fire telemetry laser from a
- 56:05telescope somewhere in Texas. Oh, that's a that's a really
- 56:08interesting I didn't know they were doing it from Texas.

- 58:50data and things like that, but I don't think they're doing
- 58:55anything other than their normal systems, if that makes sense.

- 59:20So I just set that up. I started setting it up like 5
- 59:22days ago or five or six days ago or whatever and I just didn't

- 59:47OK, so I had a plan to move towards NASA sometime in this
- 59:55year. In 2024.
- 59:56I had a plant, I was going to save a bunch of money, move
- 59:59towards NASA, any you know somewhere down there and somehow
- 1:00:06it sort of happened. But, and I, and I want to be
- 1:00:13honest with you because I've always been honest with
- 1:00:15everybody on the channel and of course this is the news channel.
- 1:00:19But it's also, you know, we all, we all hang out together.
- 1:00:22We all do fun stuff together. This is our community, right?
- 1:00:25And we want to be part of each other's lives.
- 1:00:28So around the same time that I'm sort of like I'm trying to
- 1:00:31figure out what I want to do. You know, I've I've lived in
- 1:00:35where I am now, the Northeast. For a year in little bit more
- 1:00:40like year and three months or something came back from Texas I
- 1:00:45I. What I did, I did news at
- 1:00:49Starbase on the side of the road.
- 1:00:51I spent almost a year in the Super hot Starbase area filming
- 1:00:59on the side of the road, live streaming and stuff on the side
- 1:01:00of the road. Hwy. 4 and after that was done I
- 1:01:03came back to the northeast to be with my family.
- 1:01:05My dad is older and he needed some help so I came back and
- 1:01:08helped him out a little bit. But also there were there were
- 1:01:13always questions like hey, I want to move closer to NASA
- 1:01:17because like when Starship starts launching from there when
- 1:01:21from Kennedy Space Center, I want to be close.
- 1:01:23So it's probably not going to happen till. 2027 but I wanted
- 1:01:27to set like I wanted to be. There before it all started
- 1:01:32happening. So I started making plans last
- 1:01:36year for it and I figured 2024 would be the year that I moved
- 1:01:39down there. And I get a place and you know,
- 1:01:42I start setting roots down and about like a month ago, a month
- 1:01:49and a half ago or something. Somebody from my.
- 1:01:53Life from a long time ago, and we've been in contact since, you
- 1:01:57know, since way back then, since I was a teenager, basically
- 1:02:01this, this girl that I used to date, we started talking more.
- 1:02:06Right. And it was a weird thing because
- 1:02:08I'm like, hey. This is crazy that we talk so
- 1:02:12much and we're not dating, you know?
- 1:02:14So I was like one night, it was like 1:00 in the morning, we're
- 1:02:17on the phone for like 4 hours. And I'm like, I'm, I'm like in
- 1:02:22my heart. I'm like this is.
- 1:02:24Perfect. This is the perfect girl, right?
- 1:02:27And I'm like, and you know, I'm going to if, if it seems right,
- 1:02:30I'm going to ask her basically like, ask her out.
- 1:02:33She lives down South. I live in the Northeast.
- 1:02:36So we're far away. It's a 20 hour car ride down to
- 1:02:39her place and where she lives. So I'm like, could this work
- 1:02:45long distance? Probably.
- 1:02:47Like we've always been like, great together, right?
- 1:02:51And this is a girl that I've absolutely loved my whole life.
- 1:02:54And at about like 1:30 in the morning we were both like, you
- 1:02:58know, we're both like just talking about whatever.
- 1:03:00And she goes, hey, do you want to be my boyfriend?
- 1:03:05And I was like, are you effing kidding me?
- 1:03:08I was like, are you kidding me right now?
- 1:03:11Like, what's going on? Because I was ready to ask her
- 1:03:15in like the next 20 minutes. I was like, this is going
- 1:03:17perfect. Like, I know there's something
- 1:03:19there. So I was ready to ask her.
- 1:03:21And I was like, and we have this.
- 1:03:22You know, we have this. Relationship where we're, you
- 1:03:24know we're. Good together or whatever.
- 1:03:26And I could be like, hey, wait, are you effing with me, Raymond?
- 1:03:29Like, what's going on? And she's like, no, I'm not.
- 1:03:32And I was like, Oh yeah, absolutely.
- 1:03:35Let's do it So we the last month and a half ish or last month
- 1:03:40ish, we figured out what we needed to figure out and I have
- 1:03:48the opportunity to go down there and be with her.
- 1:03:51So I get to move down South early so I can cover NASA early,
- 1:03:57which I wasn't expecting to do. I was expecting six months from
- 1:04:01now, seven months from now, whatever like September I'd.
- 1:04:04Moved down to Florida. But this all happened really
- 1:04:07quick, and I was like chance of a lifetime perfect, like the
- 1:04:11perfect girl for me. So I had to do this.
- 1:04:14I had to go for it. So I was like, this is how it
- 1:04:17works. And like, you never get this
- 1:04:20chance ever in your life. So that's what that's all about,

- 1:06:00Website as well. I think right now they're at
- 1:06:03update #4. Yeah, there's still update #4,
- 1:06:09which happened a couple hours ago.
- 1:06:12This might take all day for them to give any sort of any more
- 1:06:15information to us about anything that's happening.
- 1:06:19So what I might do, I might take a little break here after
- 1:06:22spilling my guts to everybody devs.
