Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Devin Grays, our UK europe correspondent, large search and rescue
- 0:03Speaker 1: operation underwe in the English Channel. Devin, what's heaven?
- 0:06Speaker 2: Yeah, Ryan, I'm afraid another boat carrying migrants trying to
- 0:10Speaker 2: cross the English Channel to enter the UK illegally has capsized.
- 0:14Speaker 2: More than fifty people have been rescued, according to the
- 0:17Speaker 2: French Ghost Guard, but twelve people, including we now believe
- 0:21Speaker 2: a pregnant woman has died. This is the deadliest disaster
- 0:24Speaker 2: this year in the Channel. Indeed, some are suggesting it's
- 0:27Speaker 2: probably the biggest single fatality for several years within the Channel.
- 0:34Speaker 2: Downing Street here in the UK saying the news is
- 0:36Speaker 2: truly horrific. More than twenty thousand people have made the
- 0:40Speaker 2: crossing from France to the UK so far this year,
- 0:44Speaker 2: but the numbers of deaths has also risen significantly in
- 0:48Speaker 2: this last year alone, and they're saying that's because quite simply,
- 0:50Speaker 2: the people smugglers are getting more ruthless. They're using boats
- 0:53Speaker 2: that simply aren't capable of carrying people and certainly are
- 0:57Speaker 2: not seaworthy. Indeed, this boat was seven meters long which
- 1:01Speaker 2: has sunk, and it was overloaded with seventy people and
- 1:05Speaker 2: quite simply, I'm afraid it seemed to go under. We
- 1:08Speaker 2: have had some windier rougher seas and I'm afraid it
- 1:12Speaker 2: just looks like this, both simply capsized, terrible.
- 1:15Speaker 1: The former boss of Volkswagen has appeared in court. This
- 1:18Speaker 1: is the well, huge scandal, but years and years ago
- 1:21Speaker 1: now taken a while to get to court.
- 1:24Speaker 2: Yes, it sure has so. Nine years after the cow
- 1:26Speaker 2: maker was found to have rigged the missions tests, the
- 1:29Speaker 2: former boss of Volkswagen, Martin Vintercon, chief executive company in
- 1:34Speaker 2: twenty fifteen, is on trial. He denies the charges. We've
- 1:39Speaker 2: just had the first day of the so called diesel
- 1:41Speaker 2: Gate trial, and if found guilty, the seventy seven year
- 1:44Speaker 2: old could face up to ten years in prison. Now
- 1:47Speaker 2: you'll remember the diesel Gate scandal erupted in September twenty fifteen,
- 1:52Speaker 2: and that was because American environmental protection agencies accused Volkswagen
- 1:56Speaker 2: of installing illegal software on cars called defeat devices. And
- 2:02Speaker 2: what that meant was software within the car recognized that
- 2:05Speaker 2: the vehicle was being tested in a laboratory and managed
- 2:09Speaker 2: to turn on emissions control so that it would pass
- 2:12Speaker 2: the tests as soon as it was outside the laboratory,
- 2:15Speaker 2: it would turn them on again in order to boost performance.
- 2:19Speaker 2: And of course it became a scandal which engulfed Audi, Porsche,
- 2:23Speaker 2: Sayout and Scoder as well as Volkswagen itself. And indeed
- 2:27Speaker 2: the scandal is said to cost more than fifty five
- 2:30Speaker 2: billion New Zealand dollars in fines to Volkswagen.
- 2:33Speaker 1: Kevin, thank you for that, Givin Gray, UK europe correspondent.
