- 1:31So guys, let's kick this show off.
- 1:34Welcome to another amazing episode of the ever
- 1:37-popular Inspirations for Your Life show.
- 1:39I'm John C.
- 1:40Morley.
- 1:40I'm a serial entrepreneur and engineer, a marketing
- 1:42specialist, video producer, podcast host, coach, keynote speaker,
- 1:46graduate student at Montclair State University, a passionate
- 1:49lifelong learner, and so grateful now to be
- 1:52a published author.
- 1:54So today, we're closing our weekly master topic,
- 2:00become someone your future self can actually depend
- 2:02on, with one big question I want to
- 2:05share with everyone.
- 2:06Are you ready for the life you keep
- 2:09asking for?
- 2:10That's today's granular.
- 2:12We ask for more success, opportunity, freedom, influence,
- 2:17responsibility, and even growth.
- 2:19But if everything you've been asking for arrived
- 2:22tomorrow, would you actually be prepared to carry
- 2:25it?
- 2:26That's why there's a delay between you asking
- 2:30and you receiving.
- 2:31I think that's a very important thing to
- 2:36understand how that works and how that makes
- 2:40a difference.
- 2:41But it really is important to understand, like
- 2:47I said, how this all works.
- 2:48And it works pretty well, guys.
- 2:52It works pretty well.
- 2:54It works really, really well.
- 2:56So let's explore 30 ways to become ready
- 3:02before the opportunity arrives.
- 3:05I think that's an important thing for us
- 3:08to understand and to notice because, you see,
- 3:12the problem is a lot of people out
- 3:14there think one thing, but then they don't
- 3:17really believe what that is.
- 3:19And then they short-circuit themselves.
- 3:22They short-circuit themselves.
- 3:24And I think that's an important thing for
- 3:26us to actually, you know, for us to
- 3:29understand.
- 3:30Okay.
- 3:31All right, guys.
- 3:32So let's get right into the first point.
- 3:35Wonder what that first point is?
- 3:38So that is wanting more doesn't mean you're
- 3:42ready for more.
- 3:45Wanting more doesn't mean you're ready for more.
- 3:50That's an important thing that a lot of
- 3:52us miss, right?
- 3:56They miss, like, what that's about or how
- 3:59does that connect us, okay?
- 4:02I think that's a really important thing to
- 4:05think about.
- 4:05So let's keep that in perspective.
- 4:09Desire and readiness are different.
- 4:12You can want an opportunity while still needing
- 4:14the skills, discipline, judgment, and character you're required
- 4:19to actually handle it.
- 4:21Number two, prepare before opportunity actually arrives.
- 4:26I think that's an important one, guys.
- 4:28We have to prepare for it.
- 4:30And so don't wait until everyone is depending
- 4:33on you to start preparing, learn, practice, and
- 4:38strengthen your abilities while the pressure is still
- 4:41manageable.
- 4:42Number three, build the capacity to carry more.
- 4:46Bigger opportunities usually bring bigger responsibilities.
- 4:50Don't only ask what you want to receive.
- 4:53Ask what you'll need to become capable of
- 4:55carrying this.
- 4:58And I think sometimes it's like we want
- 5:01to grow, but the problem with growing is
- 5:04that we don't understand where we're going to
- 5:07be or what we're going to do, okay?
- 5:09So I think that's an important thing for
- 5:11us to realize, okay?
- 5:14That we have to have the container.
- 5:16We have to have the tools to be
- 5:18able to handle what we're getting.
- 5:20Number four, stop expecting success to fix everything.
- 5:24It won't.
- 5:25Success can magnify what's already there.
- 5:28Strong habits become more valuable, but poor habits
- 5:31can become, well, bigger nightmares.
- 5:34Strengthen your foundation first.
- 5:36This is the most important thing.
- 5:38Number five, build discipline before motivation disappears.
- 5:41It's the discipline that actually gets us through.
- 5:47It's the discipline that gets us to become
- 5:49successful.
- 5:50Nothing else, okay?
- 5:51Motivation comes and goes, but discipline keeps you
- 5:56moving when excitement fades.
- 6:00So create habits that work even when you
- 6:03don't feel inspired.
- 6:06Number six, guys, handle today's responsibilities well.
- 6:10Don't become so focused on your next opportunity
- 6:13that you neglect the one already in your
- 6:16hands right now.
- 6:19Yeah, I think that's an important thing for
- 6:23us to realize.
- 6:25We have to understand what that means or
- 6:28how that's going to affect us, right?
- 6:31I think that's a very important thing to
- 6:35think about.
- 6:35So today's responsibility is training for tomorrow's, right?
- 6:42And we need to train, and then the
- 6:46opportunities will be presented to us.
- 6:50Because as we train, we're now going to
- 6:53be able to look for those opportunities because
- 6:55we're going to be confident in ourselves.
- 6:57Number seven, guys, stop waiting to be discovered.
- 7:00Improve whether anybody notices or not.
- 7:03The work you do privately can determine whether
- 7:06you're ready when somebody finally gives you the
- 7:08opportunity publicly.
- 7:11But you have to do it privately first,
- 7:13guys.
- 7:15You have to do it privately first.
- 7:16That's a real important thing for everyone to
- 7:22understand, okay?
- 7:25Number eight, build confidence from evidence.
- 7:28Confidence becomes stronger when you practiced, you solved
- 7:35problems, you survived setbacks, learned from mistakes, and
- 7:41proven to yourself that you can adapt.
- 7:45Number nine, guys, know yourself under pressure.
- 7:49This is a key.
- 7:51Pressure reveals what comfort can hide.
- 7:53Learn how you react when plans change.
- 7:57Problems appear and decisions have consequences.
- 8:01Number 10, strengthen your judgment.
- 8:05Knowledge gives you information.
- 8:08Judgment gives you the ability to decide what
- 8:12to do with it.
- 8:14Bigger opportunities often require decisions where the answer
- 8:18isn't obvious, guys.
- 8:20Become accountable without being chased.
- 8:25Don't make people repeatedly remind you about responsibilities
- 8:29you've accepted.
- 8:31Follow through because your words should mean something.
- 8:37Number 12, protect trust before you seek influence.
- 8:46Great water, guys.
- 8:48Influence without trust doesn't last.
- 8:53So keep commitments, protect confidential information, and never
- 9:00misuse access simply because somebody gave it to
- 9:04you.
- 9:05I think sometimes that power can go to
- 9:09people's heads, unfortunately.
- 9:12But that's a key, guys.
- 9:16That's really a key for a lot of
- 9:19people to understand, okay?
- 9:23Really important, guys.
- 9:27That's something I think that a lot of
- 9:29people don't realize what's going on.
- 9:35But I think it's important to understand this.
- 9:39I think it's very important to understand because
- 9:42understanding it makes the difference.
- 9:47And this can make you change who you
- 9:51are, okay?
- 9:53It can make you change who you are.
- 9:56Number 13, admit when you're wrong.
- 10:00You don't become weaker by correcting yourself.
- 10:04Strong people recognize mistakes, learn from them, make
- 10:07adjustments, and keep moving forward.
- 10:12Sometimes people are going to say something and
- 10:14it's going to be like, oh, I don't
- 10:16want to do that.
- 10:17Or they're going to put you down.
- 10:20Don't let that break your discipline.
- 10:24Number 14, stay teachable as you grow.
- 10:28It's important to stay humble, okay?
- 10:32Success doesn't mean you've learned everything.
- 10:36Keep asking great questions.
- 10:39Keep listening.
- 10:41Someone with less experience than you may still
- 10:46know something you don't.
- 10:49So be open to that.
- 10:51You never know when you're going to learn
- 10:52something.
- 10:53You never know when you're going to learn
- 10:55something.
- 10:58That's the real key.
- 11:00Be humble, be humble.
- 11:03Number 15, guys, build resilience before the setback.
- 11:08The future you want will still contain difficult
- 11:12days.
- 11:14Success doesn't eliminate adversity.
- 11:16Learn how to recover before a major challenge
- 11:20demands it.
- 11:24Practice, be ready, right?
- 11:27Being proactive instead of reactive.
- 11:29That's a big key, guys.
- 11:32Number 16, learn to manage your emotions.
- 11:42Your emotions matter, but they don't need to
- 11:45control every decision you have.
- 11:47Recognize what you're feeling while keeping your thinking
- 11:51available.
- 11:53I think that's a point that a lot
- 11:55of people miss because when this changes, it's
- 11:58like, okay, my whole perspective changed.
- 12:02And then that changes your whole capability, okay?
- 12:07Your whole capability.
- 12:09That's a key, guys.
- 12:10That is really, really a key that a
- 12:13lot of people just don't seem to understand,
- 12:19okay?
- 12:20They don't seem to understand that and what
- 12:24it actually means.
- 12:28I think that's an important piece, guys.
- 12:31Number 17, become comfortable with uncertainty.
- 12:34I've said this so many times.
- 12:36You won't always have perfect information.
- 12:39Sometimes you'll have to evaluate the facts, understand
- 12:43the risks, trust your judgment, and move, right?
- 12:49You may not be in the right spot
- 12:51and that's okay.
- 12:53Nothing wrong with that.
- 12:56We learn every single day in our life
- 12:58and we stay humble and we are always
- 13:01teachable.
- 13:02We're always learning.
- 13:05Number 18, guys, stop depending on constant validation.
- 13:09I know so many people that they have
- 13:12to be pat on the back.
- 13:13They have to be praised every day.
- 13:15And that's not going to be good because
- 13:18when you don't get that validation, you're going
- 13:22to want to crawl into a hole because
- 13:25you didn't get your ego stroked.
- 13:29If your confidence requires applause, what happens when
- 13:35the room becomes quiet?
- 13:38Know your values and capabilities without needing everyone
- 13:44to confirm them.
- 13:47And if you don't believe me and you
- 13:49think this doesn't affect you, the minute somebody
- 13:53changes, it doesn't revere you.
- 13:57You're going to be like, I can't do
- 13:59this.
- 14:00I can't do it anymore.
- 14:02Number 19, let humility grow with success.
- 14:09Achievement doesn't require arrogance.
- 14:11Respect people, ask questions, share credit, and remember
- 14:16that success should expand your contributions, not your
- 14:21ego.
- 14:22I think a lot of people getting out
- 14:23of college as undergrads seem to get this
- 14:27wrong.
- 14:28Well, I'm better than everybody.
- 14:31Okay, and what does it prove that you
- 14:34think you're better than everybody?
- 14:35You're not.
- 14:35But what does it prove that you think
- 14:37you're better than everybody, right?
- 14:39What does that prove?
- 14:41What does it prove?
- 14:43It proves absolutely nothing, right?
- 14:51It proves absolutely, absolutely nothing.
- 14:56Nothing.
- 14:58I mean nothing.
- 15:01I think that's a real thing that hopefully
- 15:04wakes people up, right?
- 15:08Success should expand your contributions, not your ego.
- 15:13That's the key.
- 15:14Number 20, guys, become someone who improves the
- 15:21room.
- 15:21We've talked about this a little bit this
- 15:22week.
- 15:24When you enter a difficult situation, bring clarity
- 15:29instead of confusion and chaos and stability instead
- 15:36of, let's say, disaster or turmoil.
- 15:42Make your presence useful and meaningful, welcoming, respectful.
- 15:50Number 21, know what you won't sacrifice.
- 15:56Oh, this is a real good one.
- 15:58What won't you sacrifice?
- 16:04Every opportunity has a price, but not every
- 16:09price is worth paying.
- 16:14Decide what matters before you're pressured to trade
- 16:18it away.
- 16:21Understand what your core values are and how
- 16:24they function within you and how they make
- 16:28you operate.
- 16:31If a core value is not beneficial to
- 16:35you in the world, get rid of it.
- 16:41You don't have to hang on to a
- 16:42core value for life.
- 16:44Sometimes people start with core values and then
- 16:46they move to other ones because they're not
- 16:49aligned to what they really want.
- 16:56That's the key, guys.
- 16:59And I think when we know that we
- 17:04have full choices to make decisions, that's when
- 17:10magic starts to happen in our lives.
- 17:17That's how it works, guys.
- 17:19But this does not happen overnight.
- 17:24So I say, become that person, right?
- 17:31Become that person that you wanna be.
- 17:37You might not become that person overnight.
- 17:40It might take time.
- 17:45It's like the people that start with a
- 17:47task and they're terrible at it.
- 17:50And we always say, you do not have
- 17:52to be great to start anything, but you
- 17:56have to start something to become great.
- 18:03And that's a very powerful thing, guys.
- 18:06Very powerful.
- 18:08Powerful enough that'll make you understand why you're
- 18:14doing what you do.
- 18:17People do what they do because they get
- 18:20meaning.
- 18:21They get value out of life.
- 18:23I think that's a very important thing.
- 18:27And hopefully that makes sense for a lot
- 18:31of people.
- 18:32But I realize it may not.
- 18:33Number 22, build a life that can support
- 18:37success.
- 18:38What am I talking about?
- 18:40Your health, relationships, energy, routines, and personal life
- 18:45all matter.
- 18:47Success becomes difficult to enjoy when everything supporting
- 18:50it, well, starts collapsing.
- 18:54But these happen because of the choices you've
- 18:58made.
- 19:00Number 23, stop confusing visibility with readiness.
- 19:10Being noticed doesn't mean you're prepared.
- 19:16Followers, titles, attention, and recognition can create visibility
- 19:21without creating competence.
- 19:25Number 24, guys, strengthen your private standards.
- 19:30Hmm.
- 19:33Character matters most when nobody's checking, when nobody's
- 19:38watching, when nobody's seeing you.
- 19:40It's what you're doing in private.
- 19:42What you repeatedly do without supervision, without people
- 19:47watching you, eventually influences who you become publicly.
- 19:52It happens kind of slowly.
- 19:56It doesn't happen overnight.
- 19:59And it becomes like if you're over here
- 20:03and you want to move way over to
- 20:05the other side, suddenly you take slow steps.
- 20:09You're like, wow, I'm actually the other side.
- 20:11That makes a change for people.
- 20:13Number 25, guys, earn bigger opportunities through smaller
- 20:17ones, right?
- 20:21If you were looking to make, let's say,
- 20:24$1,000, and all you were looking for
- 20:27is 1,000, you might not get the
- 20:291,000, but if you looked at 100
- 20:32small, $100, right?
- 20:37110 times is 1,000.
- 20:43Don't dismiss today's responsibility because it isn't your
- 20:48dream opportunity.
- 20:50Small opportunities can become proven grounds for larger
- 20:54ones.
- 20:55Number 26, become flexible without losing yourself.
- 20:59Okay, that's important.
- 21:02Plans change, markets change, people change, you change.
- 21:08Adapt your strategy without abandoning the values that
- 21:12keep you grounded.
- 21:13What are those values?
- 21:14They're your core values, your core values.
- 21:19Number 27, build for sustainability.
- 21:23That's an interesting one.
- 21:26Getting somewhere is one challenge.
- 21:28Remaining capable once you arrive is another.
- 21:33Don't create success that requires destroying yourself to
- 21:37maintain it.
- 21:39That's a key.
- 21:40Number 28, ask what your future requires from
- 21:46you.
- 21:48Instead of only imagining what you'll receive, consider
- 21:52what you'll need to contribute.
- 21:55What skills, habits, discipline, and judgment will that
- 22:03future you want actually require?
- 22:06Number 29, guys, become someone, as I said,
- 22:13the whole master topic of this week, your
- 22:15future self can depend on.
- 22:18Your future cannot depend entirely on luck or
- 22:22perfect circumstances, they don't exist.
- 22:24Give it something stronger, a person who prepares,
- 22:28learns, adapts, follows through, and keeps growing.
- 22:32Not because he or she has to, but
- 22:34because they want to.
- 22:37When you play a game in the world,
- 22:41you enjoy moving the pieces around, you enjoy
- 22:45figuring out how to solve, how to win.
- 22:50Number 30, guys, be ready when the door
- 22:52opens.
- 22:53You may not control when your opportunity arrives,
- 22:56but you have tremendous influence over who meets
- 22:59it when it does.
- 23:01So the door may appear again, but the
- 23:06next time you see the door, even if
- 23:08it does appear, it'll probably be locked.
- 23:11So the door appears and it's open, go
- 23:13in.
- 23:15Just because you see the door a second
- 23:16time doesn't mean it's going to be unlocked.
- 23:18The next time it'll probably be locked.
- 23:20Don't spend years asking for an open door
- 23:22while ignoring the person who must walk through
- 23:26it.
- 23:27And you see, ladies and gentlemen, that's the
- 23:28challenge I want to leave you with tonight.
- 23:31Think about the future you've been asking for
- 23:34years.
- 23:35Maybe it's a bigger career, different opportunity.
- 23:40Maybe it's financial freedom.
- 23:41Maybe you want to build a business, become
- 23:44a leader, strengthen a relationship, make an impact,
- 23:47or finally accomplish something you've imagined for years.
- 23:52Now, change the question.
- 23:58Instead of asking, when am I going to
- 24:05get it?
- 24:06Ask, who do I need to become so
- 24:09I'm ready when it arrives?
- 24:13That question changes everything because it puts part
- 24:17of the responsibility back in your court, your
- 24:20hands.
- 24:21You can't control every opportunity.
- 24:23You can't guarantee that someone will say yes.
- 24:26You can't control timing, markets, other people's decisions,
- 24:29or every circumstance surrounding you.
- 24:31But you can prepare.
- 24:34You can strengthen your judgment.
- 24:37You can become more disciplined.
- 24:39You can improve how you respond under pressure.
- 24:43You can become reliable.
- 24:46You can protect your integrity.
- 24:49You can learn from mistakes.
- 24:53You can become confident without becoming arrogant.
- 25:00And you can develop the capacity to carry
- 25:03more without ever losing yourself.
- 25:07You see, ladies and gentlemen, that's what this
- 25:09entire week has been about.
- 25:12We started by understanding who you are without
- 25:16allowing other people to define you.
- 25:18Then we explored trust and responsibility, quiet confidence,
- 25:24making difficult decisions, staying steady under pressure, and
- 25:27becoming someone who improves the room.
- 25:31When you walk into a room, are the
- 25:35people glad you're in the room, or are
- 25:39they glad that you left?
- 25:41Now it's coming full circle, and hopefully it's
- 25:44all coming together.
- 25:45Your future isn't only about what happens to
- 25:49you.
- 25:50It's also about who you're becoming before it
- 25:52actually happens.
- 25:54Don't just ask for responsibility.
- 25:57Become trustworthy.
- 25:58Don't just ask for influence.
- 26:01Build character.
- 26:02Don't just ask for success.
- 26:04Build the capacity to actually sustain it.
- 26:07Don't just ask for opportunity.
- 26:10Become prepared enough to recognize it, and courageous
- 26:14enough to act when it arrives.
- 26:17Most importantly, guys, don't become so obsessed with
- 26:22reaching tomorrow that you neglect the person you're
- 26:25developing today.
- 26:27Ladies and gentlemen, if you don't know who
- 26:30I am by now, I'm John Seymour.
- 26:32I'm a serial entrepreneur, an engineer, and many
- 26:35things more, and this has been another amazing
- 26:38episode of Inspirations for Your Life.
- 26:41As I get ready to close today's show,
- 26:45I ask all of you to please become
- 26:49someone your future self can depend on.
- 26:53And remember this, ladies and gentlemen, don't just
- 26:56ask whether your future is coming.
- 26:58No.
- 27:00Ask whether you're becoming someone who's ready to
- 27:04handle and receive it when it actually arrives.
- 27:07Keep learning.
- 27:08Keep growing.
- 27:10Keep preparing.
- 27:10And become someone your future self can depend
- 27:15on.
- 27:18And that might sound daunting.
- 27:20And I said to you guys before, things
- 27:24that are uncomfortable are where the scales get
- 27:28tipped for success.
- 27:31Comfortability doesn't breed success.
- 27:34When we're uncomfortable, we have to learn a
- 27:36new skill, right?
- 27:39That's when we learn.
- 27:40That's when we grow.
- 27:45And don't worry if everybody likes you.
- 27:48Some people may not.
- 27:51Because you're growing.
- 27:53Sometimes people get jealous of that.
- 27:55Unfortunately, guys.
- 27:57Again, I'm John C.
- 27:58Morley, serial entrepreneur.
