Today on Living on the Edge with Chip Ingram.
0:14
Have you ever wondered what the Bible means when
0:16
it says we're living in the last days and what
0:19
to expect? Today we'll answer that question.
0:22
Stay with me. When things fall apart, when violence
0:30
rises, trust erodes, and people close to you
0:33
seem to be drifting, how do you stay grounded?
0:35
Paul had a very specific answer for Timothy.
0:38
And today on Living on the Edge, Chip Ingram
0:41
helps us realize that answer for ourselves as
0:44
he turns to 2 Timothy. I'm Dave Drewy, and we're
0:47
in a series called You Can Make Disciples, Personal
0:49
Coaching from the Apostle Paul. If you have your
0:53
Bible handy, go ahead and turn to 2 Timothy chapter
0:55
3, starting in verse 1. Now here's Chip with
0:59
today's message titled, Be Prepared, Don't Be
1:02
Surprised. When we are surprised, we react. When
1:08
we are prepared, we respond. When we are surprised
1:13
by things, we react. When we are prepared, we
1:19
respond. And I thought about how when you're
1:23
surprised, and when you're surprised by evil,
1:27
it's disorienting. I think the last few years
1:32
have been very disorienting, haven't they been?
1:35
I mean, it's just, it's like violence and evil
1:38
and it's grown and grown and grown, but then
1:41
it kind of got like, it went nuts. It was similar
1:44
to... is a fellow that I knew. I did know him
1:47
real well. He actually had gone to seminary.
1:50
He visited our church quite a bit. He was in
1:53
the area. And I got a phone call from his wife,
1:56
said, this is absolutely crazy. Will you please
1:58
help my husband? And he's in jail right now.
2:01
I said, he's what? Yes, he's in jail. They've
2:03
accused him of sexual molestation. So I got to
2:07
find out what's going on and he's in jail and
2:09
I call him in jail and what's going on and huge
2:11
misunderstanding and I have no idea what's going
2:14
on here and maybe someone's made accusations
2:17
and so I jump into it and I happen to know the
2:20
DA pretty well and got on the inside to find
2:24
out. I think there's a tremendous injustice.
2:27
I mean, this guy went to this seminary and he's
2:30
this person in the community. And, you know,
2:34
I'm trying to help his wife and just thinking,
2:35
oh, my gosh. And DA says, Chip, can we talk?
2:41
I said, yeah. He said, well, there's been this
2:45
allegation. Yeah. He said, but the reason he
2:49
is where he is is that we have a number of others
2:55
who aren't willing at this point yet to testify
2:57
publicly, but we have a string of these. What?
3:01
You know what? It's true. It's true. When evil
3:07
surprises you, when things start happening that
3:11
are almost hard to digest, it's very disorienting.
3:16
And my first thought was, well, do I not have
3:18
any discernment anymore? I mean, how could I
3:22
never see anything? Or what's happening to the
3:26
world? And then thoughts like... well, who can
3:29
I really trust? And can we believe in people,
3:31
right? And then you see, and then now it's happened
3:34
all across the culture. And so Paul warns of
3:39
an increase in wickedness in the last days. And
3:42
we'll talk about the last days. Let me just read
3:46
verses one through about five. But realize this.
3:53
That in the last days, difficult times will come.
3:56
That word difficult can also mean dangerous,
3:58
challenging. For people will be lovers of self
4:03
and lovers of money, boastful, arrogant, slanders,
4:06
disobedient to parents, ungrateful, unholy, unloving,
4:10
irreconcilable, malicious gossips, without self
4:13
-control. brutal, haters of good, treacherous,
4:18
reckless, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather
4:21
than the lovers of God, holding, notice the context
4:23
of this, holding to a form of godliness although
4:27
they've denied its power. Command, avoid such
4:32
people as these. So let's ask and answer two
4:36
questions and then let's dig in and talk about
4:40
what are the implications. Question number one
4:43
should be, Are we in the last days, right? Hebrews
4:48
chapter one. God, after he spoke long ago to
4:52
the fathers and the prophets and in many portions
4:55
and many ways, in these last days has spoken
5:00
to us through his son, whom he appointed heir
5:04
of all things, through whom he also made the
5:08
world. When Jesus came, And revealed himself
5:15
as the son of God and the Messiah and the savior
5:19
of the world. Biblically speaking, that's when
5:22
the last days begin. We are in the last days.
5:26
Because this is the last installment. There isn't
5:31
something else coming later. This is the era
5:35
of the church, of God's appeal, of salvation.
5:38
And depending on your theology, you're turning
5:41
the end times. Church will be raptured. The Lord
5:45
will return. He'll set up his kingdom. And on
5:48
we go. We are in the last days. Now, what we
5:52
need to understand is that we're a couple thousand
5:54
years from when the last days began. And so I
5:59
think it's fair to say, like, how long are these
6:03
last days? Well, after a few decades of the church,
6:08
some early Christians were saying, hey, you know,
6:11
what's the deal with the last days? And so in
6:14
1 Peter 3, Peter explains, know this first of
6:19
all, that in the last days, mockers will come
6:21
with their mocking, following after their own
6:24
desires and saying, where's the promise of his
6:27
coming? For since the father's fell asleep, all
6:30
things continue just as they were from the beginning
6:33
of creation. For when they maintain this, it
6:36
escapes their notice that by the word of God,
6:39
the heavens existed long ago and the earth was
6:42
formed out of the water by the water through
6:44
which the world at that time was destroyed by
6:48
being flooded with water. But by his word, the
6:50
present heavens and earth are being reserved
6:53
for fire, kept for the day of judgment, destruction
6:56
of the ungodly people. Do not let this one fact
6:59
escape you. Notice, beloved, that with the Lord,
7:03
one day is like a thousand years and a thousand
7:06
years like one day. The Lord is not slow about
7:10
his promise, as some count slowness, but is patient
7:14
toward you, not willing for any to perish, but
7:18
for all to come to repentance. And so I think
7:22
when you open this chapter and he says, mark
7:24
this, Timothy, in the last days, evil things
7:28
are going to come. And then he starts to lay
7:30
them out. He's saying, in the last days, beginning
7:33
now, these are the kind of things you're going
7:35
to see. And the inference here is, as we get
7:38
closer and closer, these kind of things will
7:41
intensify and become more and more the norm instead
7:46
of the exception. Does that make sense? What
7:49
Timothy needed to know was the things that he
7:51
was seeing that was so overwhelming and so wicked
7:54
were what Jesus said would happen. What characterizes
7:59
the increase of wickedness is primarily self
8:02
-love, love of money, love of pleasure, and then
8:08
the dominoes. How about this? Lean back. Amplify
8:13
Bible. But understand this, that in the last
8:16
days, dangerous times of great stress and trouble
8:19
will come. Difficult days that will be hard to
8:22
bear. For people will be lovers of self, narcissistic,
8:26
self -focused, lovers of money, impelled by greed,
8:30
boastful, arrogant, revilers, disobedient to
8:33
parents, ungrateful, unholy and profane. And
8:36
they will be unloving. They'll be devoid of natural
8:40
human affection. They'll be calloused. and inhumane,
8:44
irreconcilable. They'll gossip maliciously. They'll
8:49
be devoid of any self -control, intemperate and
8:52
immoral. They'll be brutal, haters of good, traitors
8:57
in relationships, reckless and conceited, lovers
9:00
of sensual pleasure rather than lovers of God,
9:03
holding to a form of outward godliness, religion,
9:07
although they have denied its power, for their
9:10
conduct nullifies their claim of faith. Avoid
9:13
such people and keep far away from them. And
9:17
then he's going to give a couple of examples
9:19
so that Timothy realizes, hey, this has happened
9:25
in the past. And so the question I put here is,
9:30
how are we tempted to interpret these developments?
9:34
When you've seen all this wickedness and all
9:36
this violence and stuff happening, down deep,
9:39
what are your feelings? What have you done? Where
9:43
are your fears? And you know what we would hear?
9:48
Just feels like the world's out of control. Feels
9:51
hopeless. I'm scared to death for those of you
9:54
that are grandparents or for those of you parents.
9:56
What kind of world are my kids gonna come into?
10:00
Is it even gonna be safe to walk in the streets
10:02
in the future, right? These are the kind of things
10:05
that create incredible angst, anxiety, depression.
10:12
Division. When things are really getting crazy,
10:15
what do we do? We're all human, right? Remember
10:17
when we were little kids and things got really
10:19
hard, you blame your brother, you blame your
10:21
sister. Well, when they get really hard in a
10:24
society, you find some other people to blame.
10:26
And it's them and the problems out there. And
10:31
we get more and more and more divided. And we
10:34
create this... petri dish culturally of anger
10:37
and blame and hurt and suspicion and lack of
10:42
trust and fear. And that's the temptation that
10:47
we have. And in the midst of that, there's this
10:51
supernatural community, this group of people
10:56
that is what's called the body of Jesus. his
11:00
hands, his feet, his eyes, people that live above
11:04
all that fray, people who understand the fallenness
11:08
of mankind, people who recognize the things that
11:11
they have done and been forgiven of, people who
11:13
grasp that this is our opportunity in the midst
11:16
of all this pain and blame and violence, this
11:19
is the opportunity to love and to heal and to
11:23
respond and to set an example. And what Paul
11:27
is saying to Timothy is, This is going to be
11:31
the normal thing, but you got to understand this
11:33
is how people react. For some people, you isolate.
11:39
For some people, they begin to doubt. You know,
11:42
I don't believe anymore that God's sovereign.
11:44
If he was, we wouldn't be having this. This isn't
11:47
the life. I've gone to church. I tithe. I read
11:51
my Bible regularly. And look at what happened.
11:54
Look what happened in my world. Look what happened
11:56
in our company. Look what happened in our nation,
11:57
right? Do you understand where this goes? That's
12:01
why he's writing to Timothy and that's why we're
12:03
reading it today. We're tempted to feel hopeless
12:06
and helpless and blame and question God's purposes.

12:44
How are we to respond to these developments?
12:47
Look at verse 6. He says, avoid, turn away from
12:52
such people and their behavior. The two temptations
12:57
are to, one, compromise or to isolate. It's like,
13:03
you know what? It's so crazy out there. I'm just
13:07
going to kind of watch it on TV and hope it doesn't
13:09
get too close to me and, you know, my little
13:11
world. The problem is your little world keeps
13:14
shrinking, right? The flip side is, we've all
13:19
heard that illustration where you put the frog
13:21
in water and you do the temperature very, very,
13:24
very slowly. I think as it erodes more and more
13:28
in the culture, you're going to see more and
13:30
more things that even five years ago, Christians
13:34
would never do this that will become commonplace
13:37
because people will compromise. I was counseling
13:41
with a, a person a year or so ago, and a godly
13:47
person, great family, and a couple of his godly
13:51
friends, and one was going through a tough time,
13:52
and he kind of tried to help his buddy, and eventually,
13:56
you know, they got a divorce. Then it happened
13:58
to another close friend, and so his couple closest
14:01
friends are going through these things, and then,
14:05
you know, they entered a new world. Now they're
14:08
wounded, now they're hurt, and now they're sort
14:09
of... Back in it? Well, now they're sleeping
14:12
around. And I said, you know, what do you think
14:18
about all that? Well, I'm really trying to help.
14:20
I'm really trying to help them. And I said, are
14:21
they willfully just kind of living that out?
14:25
Yeah, but, you know, we're talking. And I, you
14:28
know how pastors are, I pulled out the Bible.
14:30
And so I said, you know, I know you want to help
14:35
them. This passage says when a so -called brother
14:39
or sister is living in willful sin and you talk
14:42
to them and they don't respond at all, don't
14:47
even eat with them. Don't keep providing the
14:50
spiritual and relational support that facilitates
14:55
the benefits of being in the body of Christ instead
14:58
of allowing the consequences of their actions
15:01
to be, remember what Paul said, I turn this one
15:04
over to Satan to buffet him. The goal wasn't
15:06
to hurt him. It was to restore that person that
15:09
was involved in immorality in the Corinthian
15:11
church. And I'll never forget, he said, well,
15:14
you know, I could never do that. Which was followed
15:17
sometime later by a moral failure in his life.
15:21
1 Corinthians 15, 33. Bad company corrupts good
15:26
morals every time. And none of us are immune.
15:30
It's happening so subtly. And it's not just in
15:34
the sexual area. Ask yourself, how are people
15:36
viewing money? How are people viewing priorities?
15:40
How are people viewing sort of what's acceptable
15:43
or not acceptable? And I don't mean culturally,
15:44
I mean from what the scripture says. And so notice
15:48
how he picks it up. He talks about the specific
15:51
ways these people live it out. For among them
15:54
are those who slip into households and captivate
15:56
weak women, weighed down with sins, led on by
15:59
various impulses. Always learning, never. able
16:03
to come to a knowledge of the truth. So he says,
16:06
Timothy, this is a current example of how these
16:10
things, not just in the last days, some days,
16:13
some way, but these things are playing out right
16:15
now. You just need to be aware. And then he gives
16:18
him a historic example. And then he goes on to
16:21
say, just as Janus and Jambres opposed Moses,
16:24
so these men also opposed the truth. Men of depraved
16:27
minds, worthless in regard to the faith. By tradition,
16:32
those were two of the magicians who when Moses
16:35
did, remember all those supernatural things,
16:38
they could copy it, copy it, copy it until he
16:41
did some things that required the creation of
16:43
life. And he goes, you know, it's happening today.
16:47
It happened back in Moses' days. And then notice,
16:50
but he says, look at the outcome. Look at the
16:53
outcome. But they will not make further progress,
16:57
for their foolishness will be obvious to all,
17:00
just as it was also of Janus and Jambres. So
17:04
you're Timothy, you know your Old Testament,
17:06
and you're thinking of the challenge and the
17:08
bondage and what they went through. And Moses,
17:11
who was bold, and before being bold, what he
17:14
got? He got knocked by Pharaoh and he got knocked
17:17
by his own people. Do you see the picture he's
17:19
trying to see? And so Moses gave up and said,
17:24
I guess it's not worth it. Oh no, that's not
17:26
how the story goes. So Moses hung in there. And
17:31
Moses had challenges and doubts and struggles.
17:35
And the Lord was with him. And he's saying, Timothy,
17:38
this is how life goes. And now he wants to sort
17:44
of help him get on the positive side of things.
17:48
You'll notice. In the next section, I just entitled
17:51
this, Don't Be Afraid, Keep Pressing Ahead, verses
17:54
10 through 17. Don't be afraid. We can't live
17:59
our life out of the lens of fear. You have to
18:03
live your life out of a lens of faith. But this
18:07
kind of evil causes us to question that. That
18:10
kind of evil causes us to wonder, can we trust
18:14
God? Can we trust his promises? And what Paul's
18:17
trying to help him see is, okay, Timothy, so
18:21
notice this. Let's remember some of your past
18:24
progress. Verse 10, now you, he's contrasting
18:29
him with these people that are going down very
18:33
bad paths. Now you followed my teaching, conduct,
18:38
purpose, faith, patience, love, perseverance.
18:44
persecutions and suffering such as happened to
18:48
me in Antioch, at Iconium, and at Lystra, what
18:52
persecutions I endured and out of them all, what's
18:57
the punchline? The Lord rescued me. I would encourage
19:03
you to remember past progress, to literally kind
19:08
of look in the rear view mirror, not maybe a
19:11
year or two, but But to try and even if you need
19:15
to sit quietly and ask God or especially with
19:18
family members, where has God shown up in the
19:22
most challenging and difficult times in our life?
19:26
And you would start to tell stories about taking
19:28
one of your kids to the ICU. You talk about a
19:32
time in some of our cases when one of you had
19:36
cancer and it was very questionable whether you're
19:39
going to make it. And you start looking back,
19:42
looking back, looking back, looking back, and
19:44
you would have a story that God has rescued you
19:49
out of things in the past. He's not idle. And
19:54
by the way, I know I'm a broken record. If you
19:59
keep watching a lot of news, you will live in
20:03
fear. Because the news is made and geared to
20:07
be sensational. It's to get your attention and
20:10
to keep you watching. And when you keep watching,
20:13
since you're a product of your thought life,
20:15
you will assume that things that are happening
20:17
on the news are going to happen to you. And the
20:20
lens in which you will look at the world is it's
20:22
negative, it's violent, it's terrible, it's bad,
20:25
and it's not gonna get better. And so your only
20:29
two choices are one is to isolate or to compromise
20:31
or medicate yourself in some way. And you can
20:36
do it with drugs, you can do it with alcohol,
20:37
you can do it with work, you can do it with escape.
20:40
And so, you know, you need to kind of be aware
20:43
of what's going on. But if you get on and watch
20:47
your news feeds and you scroll and every time
20:50
that thing goes off, oh, can you hear it? There's
20:52
another shooting. And what about this? And what
20:54
about that? When's the last time someone said,
20:57
I'd just like to declare that in the last 10
20:59
minutes there were about 27 .5 million acts of
21:03
kindness of people who cared for one another.
21:05
I got an email from a friend who works in the
21:07
Global South, and he gave the statistics of the
21:10
number of people in the last two or three years
21:13
that have come to Christ in the Global South.
21:15
It's more of all the people that have come to
21:17
Christ in all of church history. God's working
21:20
in power. You don't get any good news. God's
21:22
working in amazing ways here and all around the
21:25
world. There's young people that are on fire
21:27
for God. They're not all just a bunch of slackers.
21:29
But you know what? It's not going to make the
21:32
news. And we have, by and large, a church that
21:37
is living out of fear. This is Living on the
21:42
Edge with Chip Ingram and a message titled Be
21:45
Prepared, Don't Be Surprised. It comes from our
21:48
series called You Can Make Disciples, personal
21:50
coaching from the Apostle Paul. Every lesson
21:53
is available for you to revisit and share at

Full -length sermons from Chip are also available
22:08
on the Chip Ingram Sermon Podcast wherever you

22:15
God is constant. And Paul's word to Timothy and

23:29
final thoughts. As we close today's program,
23:32
the teaching from the Scripture brought to mind
23:36
one of the most challenging things in my life.
23:39
There's times where God says, Chip, this is what
23:42
I want you to do. But the moment I think of obeying
23:45
it, I realize I'm going to disappoint someone
23:47
or someone's going to think that if I do that,
23:51
I don't care about them anymore. Pleasing people
23:53
or pleasing God, I feel between the rock and
23:56
the hard place. And here's my question for you
23:59
today. What is it that God has prompted and brought
24:03
to your mind, maybe over and over, about a relationship
24:06
or about a habit or about a practice? But you
24:10
know if you obey God, some people will be very
24:13
disappointed. or you think you're going to let
24:16
them down, or they'll think less of you. Would
24:19
you be willing today to ask Jesus to give you
24:22
the strength and the help to obey him? Here's
24:26
your verse for the day, Proverbs 29, 25. The
24:30
fear of man is a snare, but blessed is he who
24:34
trusts in the Lord. Trust God, you'll never regret
24:38
it. I'm Dave Drewy. Chip has a question he's
24:41
been asking church leaders for years, and the
24:43
answer shocked him. Don't miss the next part
24:46
of our message. Be prepared. Don't be surprised.
