- 2:04SPEAKER_00: But I'm really excited about the um hundredth episode.
- 2:08SPEAKER_00: I feel like it's a huge milestone.
- 2:11SPEAKER_00: I've been doing this now a couple of years, and it took me a couple of years to get going on the podcast because I had the idea and then I just kept putting everything in the way and then never got round to doing it because I was I the fear, I suppose, the fear of whether or not I could do it, and now I stand before you behind this mic, one episode away from reaching my hundredth episode goal.
- 2:37SPEAKER_00: So I'm super super excited, and I thought, what better way to celebrate that milestone than to release the scaling up series?
- 2:49SPEAKER_00: So over the next five weeks, I'm going to be sharing with you my series, which is all about scaling up your business by creating scalable products that you can sell on repeat.
- 3:03SPEAKER_00: So this is really exciting because I talk about this obviously through the podcast.
- 3:07SPEAKER_00: As I said, I've got 98 episodes in the archive where I talk about building a digital business online, and of course, one of the cornerstones of having an online business are the products that you're going to be selling.
- 3:23SPEAKER_00: But it isn't just something that you need to create, there are other ways to scale up as well, and I'm going to be sharing those ways with you over the next five episodes.
- 3:34SPEAKER_00: So I'm really excited about that.
- 3:36SPEAKER_00: But before I dive into today's episode, which is going to be all about creating digital products in your business, I just want to talk about the digital creators hub.
- 3:47SPEAKER_00: Now, if you are not in the hub, then I really encourage you to get yourself over in the hub.
- 3:53SPEAKER_00: It's completely free, but this is where I share some free resources that will help you to get started on your digital journey.
- 4:02SPEAKER_00: Now, I'm gonna run this hub until the end of the year and then I'm going to make some changes.
- 4:09SPEAKER_00: And the changes may be that I may start charging for entry into the hub.
- 4:15SPEAKER_00: So I encourage you if you are not in the hub and you are interested in building a profitable business online, go head over to www.carinhyphandavies.com forward slash hub and get yourself in there because there is so much good stuff that has been designed to help you get started.
- 4:38SPEAKER_00: Okay, so let's get back to today's episode, which I'm super super excited about, and today I want to start by talking about digital products.
- 4:52SPEAKER_00: Now, if you have listened to my episode last week, so episode 98, I spoke about sort of the five key um things that you can create in your business that is going to help you to scale your income.
- 5:08SPEAKER_00: Why do we want to scale our income?
- 5:11SPEAKER_00: If you are currently a service-based provider where you are selling your time for money, the truth is that it's not sustainable long term.
- 5:22SPEAKER_00: You can probably do well now, you could probably do well next year.
- 5:27SPEAKER_00: But the reality is if something happens in your world that requires you to take time out, your business is most likely going to suffer because of it.
- 5:53SPEAKER_00: So we're not having to just be there all the time giving our time to keep the lights on, we can still make sales when we're away from the desk, and that's a really important thing to really think about in your business, and I encourage you to do that.
- 6:10SPEAKER_00: Which is why, over the next five episodes, I'm going to be sharing my scaling up series, and what this will allow you to do is take any one of the methods in which I'm going to share with you and apply it to your business.
- 6:26SPEAKER_00: Because I believe we can all do this, we can all create offers that are scalable, and that alone is going to build in security in our business, it's going to make our business model more robust.
- 6:40SPEAKER_00: I've said this before in previous episodes.
- 6:43SPEAKER_00: God forbid COVID happens again.
- 6:46SPEAKER_00: If you have scalable products that you can sell on repeat that doesn't require you to have to be there time and time again to deliver them, then you're going to build a more sustainable business going forward, and that's what we need to be focusing on.
- 7:00SPEAKER_00: And so today I'm going to be talking about digital products.
- 7:04SPEAKER_00: Now I sell digital products in my business.
- 7:07SPEAKER_00: I have quite a few actually that I have created and sold over the years, and it's a really great way to just bring in extra income.
- 7:18SPEAKER_00: The thing is, everybody has something in their business that they can most likely develop into a digital product.
- 7:27SPEAKER_00: It could be a process, it could be a framework, it could be a template, a checklist, a cheat sheet, a how-to guide, resource.
- 7:38SPEAKER_00: There will be something that you have in your business that you are using day to day or week to week that is helping you to do the thing that you do, and that in itself is going to be a vital thing that you can then repackage and sell as a digital product.
- 7:59SPEAKER_00: Because here's the thing if it's helping you, it's most likely going to help somebody else, and so you just need to think about what it is that you are using in your business that you can sell to support somebody else that may be doing the same kind of business as you.
- 8:16SPEAKER_00: So I just want to start by talking about the difference between a passive income and active income, because I think there is a common misconception of what that's about.
- 8:28SPEAKER_00: Now, active income is when you are earning income from either your time or from your effort.
- 8:38SPEAKER_00: So you're actively involved in earning that income.
- 8:42SPEAKER_00: So if you are a service-based provider, or maybe you're a consultant, a creative, or you a job that where you sell your time, your skills, your expertise in exchange for money, you are creating active income.
- 8:59SPEAKER_00: You might be getting paid by the hour, you might be getting paid by the contract, you might be getting paid quarterly or on retainer or or whatever.
- 9:08SPEAKER_00: There's so many different sort of payment models out there, but essentially the trade-off is time for money.
- 9:15SPEAKER_00: Now, on the other hand, you've got passive income, and this is very different indeed because this is where you put the work in at the beginning, and then you benefit from the rewards going forward.
- 9:30SPEAKER_00: So you take the time, you create the thing, you set it up, you set up your funnel, your automation, all of those bids, and then you take a step back and you reap the rewards of that income because your products will be sold in a way that doesn't require you to necessarily be there all the time to sell them.
- 9:53SPEAKER_00: Now it's interesting because I had a conversation, it was a couple of months ago, actually, and I was talking about the whole passive income sort of concept, and somebody said to me, and she was quite clear about it.
- 10:06SPEAKER_00: She was like, I don't believe in passive income because I think with anything there is work involved, which means it's not passive.
- 10:14SPEAKER_00: And it was quite an interesting conversation because actually what was really interesting was her belief system around the idea of passive income.
- 10:26SPEAKER_00: I personally don't agree.
- 10:28SPEAKER_00: I believe you can absolutely create passive income in your business.
- 10:33SPEAKER_00: I stand here today behind this mic with passive income coming into my business.
- 10:38SPEAKER_00: I have multiple passive income streams.
- 10:41SPEAKER_00: Yes, it took me time, energy, and effort to set it all up, but I have more than reap the rewards.
- 10:50SPEAKER_00: And I've been on holiday before and I've been making money whilst I've been out with my family enjoying rides and all kinds of things.
- 11:00SPEAKER_00: When I when I we were out in Florida, it was an amazing feeling, and that was because I put the work in at the beginning, and so I reap the rewards at a later date.
- 11:11SPEAKER_00: So that's passive income where you're making money, but you do not have to be there to give your time over and over again.
- 11:19SPEAKER_00: Now I do think it's really important to have a real clear understanding between active incomes and passive incomes because sometimes when you are setting things up at the beginning, it can feel quite challenging because it doesn't feel very passive.
- 11:33SPEAKER_00: If you're having to give your time and your energy to set something up, you're you're not necessarily feeling the benefits at that moment, but it's about putting in the work, taking the action, and creating things that are scalable and that can be sold on repeat.
- 11:49SPEAKER_00: So the work at the beginning, however challenging it may feel, is worth it in the long run.
- 11:54SPEAKER_00: And I think that's the thing, it's about keeping your eye on the prize and remembering why you're doing it.
- 12:02SPEAKER_00: So now that we have gone through what that difference is, I just want to talk about the different digital products that can actually help you to build passive income in your business.
- 12:14SPEAKER_00: So there are a lot of digital products out there, it is a growing market.
- 12:20SPEAKER_00: More and more entrepreneurs are packaging up their skills and their expertise, and they're creating things that they can sell on repeat.
- 12:30SPEAKER_00: Now, I'm part of a community for Notion.
- 12:34SPEAKER_00: For those of you that may not know, Notion is a project management tool, it is by far one of my favorite tools, and I use it daily in my business.
- 12:44SPEAKER_00: It's completely free.
- 12:45SPEAKER_00: There is a premium option.
- 12:47SPEAKER_00: I don't pay for the premium option, I'm quite happy with a free option.
- 12:50SPEAKER_00: But what Notion does that is slightly different to other project management tools, is that you can almost build an ecosystem for your business just in that tool alone.
- 13:03SPEAKER_00: So it's a bit like a website whereby you create pages and you can have pages nested in pages.
- 13:09SPEAKER_00: So, for example, you could have your business area, you can have your marketing area, you can have your income and finance area, and then what you can do is you can build it out, you have complete freedom on how you build it out.
- 13:24SPEAKER_00: So it's not like say ClickUp and Trello and some of the other project management tools out there, that is very cookie-cutter approach.
- 13:34SPEAKER_00: This is very individual, and so you can create a system for your business that ultimately supports you.
- 13:43SPEAKER_00: Now, what that means is that there are lots of entrepreneurs now that have decided to create Notion templates and sell them, so they make money by creating templates that they can then sell to their audience.
- 14:00SPEAKER_00: Now, if you are somebody like me that is an avid Notion user, templates are time saving.
- 14:07SPEAKER_00: So me spending a small amount of money to get a template to help get me set up is a no-brainer because it means that I can build that ecosystem that is going to support my business, and I don't have to sit there figuring it out what I need to do to get it up and working.
- 14:26SPEAKER_00: So all I need to do is go into the library, choose a template that works with what I have in mind, and then pay a small amount of money, and then I get a really good template that I can then use in my Notion account.
- 14:42SPEAKER_00: Now there are free templates, but of course, the paid ones are more powered up, so that I get more functionality and I get more from those paid products.
- 14:54SPEAKER_00: Now, for the entrepreneur that's gone ahead and created those Notion templates, they're selling them at a small price.
- 15:01SPEAKER_00: So it might be that I buy a template for say 10 quid, but for them, what they've now got is a product that they can sell on repeat.
- 15:10SPEAKER_00: And if you've got 10 people, 100 people, a thousand people, even a million people buying a template at 10 pound, that's a whole load of money.
- 15:22SPEAKER_00: So it becomes a really viable business model because they've created the template, they've created that 10 pound template, and then they've put it within a library of Notion users, so they're putting that template in front of the people that are then going to use the template or likely to buy the template, and then they make money on repeat by selling that template.
- 15:46SPEAKER_00: So it becomes a really profitable business because they don't have overheads, they're not having to hold inventory, they don't have to pay for any tech because they can do it within the notion platform, which is predominantly free, but they get to make money over and over and over again, and that's where digital products becomes really lucrative.
- 16:10SPEAKER_00: Now I have, as I said, I've got products in my business, I've got planners, I've got workbooks, I've got guides, I've got all different things in relation to my branding business and online courses that I have sold on repeat, and I use platforms like Etsy, Gumroad, I've used tools like Send Owl, is a really good tool to use, and I and I've made money by people purchasing the thing that I've created once, but I've been able to sell it on repeat as well.
- 16:46SPEAKER_00: So if you are in doubt as to whether digital products are actually profitable, they are extremely profitable, they're extremely powerful in your business.
- 16:58SPEAKER_00: You can have a really low-cost offer that, like I say, you know, you could sell for a small amount, and then you can sell it on repeat over and over and over again.
- 17:15SPEAKER_00: If you are on Facebook, you've probably most likely seen ads where people are selling systems and how-tos and templates and all of that good stuff, and it's for a low cost, it might be that you've seen something, an ad promoting something for like seven dollars, and you might be thinking, well, it can't be any good because it's only seven dollars.
- 17:37SPEAKER_00: But the truth is that their business model is scalability because seven dollars when you've got a hundred people paying, or a thousand or even a million, adds up to a lot of money, so it's a strategy that a lot of entrepreneurs are now using as a way of being able to sell their digital products to the masses.
- 18:00SPEAKER_00: So, how do you go about choosing the right digital products in your business?
- 18:05SPEAKER_00: Because this is something that I know I've had conversations about.
- 18:09SPEAKER_00: How do you get started, and how do you know what it is that you have that's going to be of value to somebody else?
- 18:17SPEAKER_00: And I think the first thing you have to really think about is your audience's needs, so you have to get clear on exactly who your audience are and what their needs are as well.
- 18:27SPEAKER_00: Now, whenever I'm thinking about this, for some reason I always think about bookkeepers, it's just one of those professions that I feel doesn't tap into the power digital products enough.
- 18:41SPEAKER_00: The reason why I say this is because a lot of people, a lot of entrepreneurs, outsource their bookkeeping and their accounts because often it's not a strength that they may have, their strength is in the thing that they're offering in their business, and so most businesses need either a bookkeeper or an accountant.
- 19:04SPEAKER_00: And I know I've been there myself where the whole accountancy thing has just overwhelmed me.
- 19:10SPEAKER_00: I don't know where to start, tracking my expenses and income and all of that stuff.
- 19:16SPEAKER_00: And I know at the beginning it was an absolute minefield, and also, how do you even go about choosing the right bookkeeper or accountant as part of your team?
- 19:27SPEAKER_00: So I think there is a lot of untapped potential in this space.
- 19:32SPEAKER_00: Now, for a bookkeeper, for example, they can create things like expense sheets or even how to get started on Zero or QuickBooks or whatever accountancy tool that they support.
- 19:46SPEAKER_00: But there's a lot of things that they could be offering that they can then sell in their businesses to support their income.
- 19:53SPEAKER_00: The whole thing of tax and VAT for somebody that doesn't know anything about it, they have the potential of educating their potential customers so that actually when their bookkeeping or accounts get handed over, they're in a much better shape because they've been able to provide resources and tools that support their customers, and that could be chargeable, so it doesn't mean that they give a template for free, but it could be at a low cost, and then that could be sold to other people as well, so it doesn't just have to be their customers.
- 20:32SPEAKER_00: So I always kind of think within the um accountancy space, there is so much potential to create things like digital products and online courses and even memberships to a certain extent, because you have that overwhelm that a lot of people feel, and part of creating something that you do sell and repeat is about managing that overwhelm and helping people to push past the overwhelm to take action in something that they need to take action in in order to do something in their business.
- 21:05SPEAKER_00: So that's what I would encourage you to think about what is it that your customers or clients need from you, and how can you help them in the easiest way possible?
- 21:18SPEAKER_00: And could that be a resource, a checklist, a cheat sheet, a how-to guide, a template, design templates?
- 21:27SPEAKER_00: If you're a creative, can you create design templates?
- 21:30SPEAKER_00: The market for Canva templates now is huge.
- 21:34SPEAKER_00: I'm always seeing them because a lot of entrepreneurs and business owners are using Canva as a way of creating the marketing promotional material.
- 21:44SPEAKER_00: So if they can grab a template at a low cost, it's just going to make their life easier.
- 22:00SPEAKER_00: So, what can you create that's going to save your ideal person a whole lot of time?
- 22:07SPEAKER_00: So, let's just now discuss the balance between low-cost and high-value products because I think this is something to also consider, because I think both have their place in the digital product strategy, and I think it's important to know how to balance between them in order for you to be able to scale your product library effectively.
- 22:29SPEAKER_00: So, as you build individual products out, you're going to naturally build a product library that you can, of course, make money from.
- 22:36SPEAKER_00: Now, low-cost products are a really great way to get people into your ecosystem.
- 22:42SPEAKER_00: As entrepreneurs and business owners, we need to market ourselves.
- 22:45SPEAKER_00: We need to bring people into our world so that they understand that we exist.
- 22:51SPEAKER_00: Because if they don't know we exist, then it doesn't matter how brilliant what you have is to offer, you're not going to make any money because people just don't know you exist.
- 23:00SPEAKER_00: So you need to be thinking about what you can offer at the get-go that brings people into your world.
- 23:06SPEAKER_00: So this is going to introduce potential customers to your brand and it's also going to help build trust.
- 23:13SPEAKER_00: Now, on the other hand, you've got high-value products, these are like like online courses and memberships.
- 23:20SPEAKER_00: They're they're a bit more high premium because there's a lot more that goes into them, and they create a bit more long-term and sustainable revenue as well.
- 23:30SPEAKER_00: So it's the fact that you can sell them on repeat, but also that people may be committed to them for a longer period of time, so there's that repetitive income.
- 23:39SPEAKER_00: Now, both sort of camps, if you like, the low cost and the high value, they both have their place.
- 23:46SPEAKER_00: But I think it's important that when you're starting out, you determine what it is you want to focus on at the beginning so that you know exactly what your intentions are going to be.
- 23:57SPEAKER_00: The great thing about creating online courses and memberships is that you will most likely create resources as you go in order to support your students' learning, and then they can be digital products anyway, so then you can make income off your resources that you have in your online course.
- 24:14SPEAKER_00: But if you're not at that point where you're ready to commit to an online course, then absolutely start with a digital product, start with a low-cost offer that you can sell on repeat so that you can focus on scaling.
- 24:30SPEAKER_00: So I just want to touch on marketing because again, this is something that I often get asked about.
- 24:37SPEAKER_00: How do you market your digital product?
- 24:40SPEAKER_00: So it might be that I can go and create it.
- 24:42SPEAKER_00: I can go into Canva, I can set up a template, I can create the thing that I want to sell, but how do I go about selling my digital product?
- 24:53SPEAKER_00: Now, there are many, many ways in which you can sell, and I don't think one way is right for everyone.
- 25:02SPEAKER_00: I have come to learn through my own experience that there isn't a blueprint.
- 25:08SPEAKER_00: I think everybody's businesses are different, I think there's a lot of variables.
- 25:12SPEAKER_00: We all have different audiences, different products, different intentions, different goals, different ways of doing things.
- 25:20SPEAKER_00: And so I don't believe that there's one hard and fast way for everyone.
- 25:25SPEAKER_00: But what I do think is that often success comes from implementing multiple strategies, and so it's about looking at what you have available and what you can manage as well.
- 25:37SPEAKER_00: So, for example, you can leverage social media to promote your products, that's an easy way, isn't it?
- 25:46SPEAKER_00: If you're on social media and you are creating content, then you can use social media to promote your products.
- 25:55SPEAKER_00: The other thing that I would encourage probably everybody to do is build an email list.
- 26:03SPEAKER_00: So have something where people are signing up so that they can come into your world, make it easy for them to access your stuff, and then by building a simple email list, and it doesn't have to be big, it could be small.
- 26:17SPEAKER_00: Small can be mighty, it's not about numbers, it's about engagement.
- 26:22SPEAKER_00: So if you can build a small engaged list, then you'll be able to sell your digital products.
- 26:27SPEAKER_00: But I think first and foremost, you have to get really clear on exactly who your audience are, what they need from you, the problem that you're ultimately solving, and what that product is that's gonna help solve that problem.
- 26:40SPEAKER_00: And I think if you can nail that, then when it comes to your marketing, you can get really clear on exactly what this product is going to do.
- 26:49SPEAKER_00: Because if you can tap into the needs of your audience and provide a really powerful solution that's gonna save them time, it's gonna save them energy, and it's gonna prevent overwhelm, then you're going to be onto a winner, you're going to get those sales.
- 27:05SPEAKER_00: So leverage social media and build an email list.
- 27:09SPEAKER_00: The other thing you could do is you could run workshops.
- 27:15SPEAKER_00: If you are comfortable with doing that, you could run a monthly workshop, and then you could sell your digital product at the end of the workshop as well.
- 27:24SPEAKER_00: So you could actually workshop the thing that you've created, and then at the end of it, you can then upsell the digital product, whatever that might be.
- 27:34SPEAKER_00: The great thing about workshops is that you build your people, you build you start to build that community around what you do as well.
- 27:42SPEAKER_00: So, again, just going back to my example of a bookkeeper, there is no reason why a bookkeeper couldn't run a workshop on how to master the their bookkeeping.
- 27:53SPEAKER_00: And they could workshop how to manage expenses and income and get themselves set up on proper systems that they can then pass over to a bookkeeper in order to create an efficient way of working to get their bookkeeping done, to manage their bookkeeping, which is then going to help at accounts time.
- 28:17SPEAKER_00: And then at the end of it, the upsell could be to purchase whatever product is then on offer that's going to support them with doing the thing that they are are that they have learned.
- 28:31SPEAKER_00: So there's a real clear way of selling that product.
- 28:36SPEAKER_00: The other option are webinars.
- 28:38SPEAKER_00: Webinars are really powerful.
- 28:40SPEAKER_00: If you have more of a high-value product, a webinar is a great platform to be able to talk about the thing and then to create the offer at the end in order to get those sales.
- 28:53SPEAKER_00: So there are many, many options that you can implement in order to sell the thing that you have created.
- 29:00SPEAKER_00: I think with digital products, I think a really good strategy is leveraging Pinterest because once you've created your product and you have visuals, and you've say you've gone into Canva and you've created some product visuals that showcase your product, you can then go on to Pinterest and then you can create loads and loads of pins, and then you can direct people to where your product is.
- 29:26SPEAKER_00: So if your product is on your website, you can then direct traffic to your website to check out your product.
- 29:35SPEAKER_00: And I've bought things on Pinterest.
- 29:38SPEAKER_00: So again, Pinterest is a really powerful platform that often gets overlooked.
- 29:44SPEAKER_00: But you can start on Pinterest today, it's easy to set up, you just need to make sure you've got a business account.
- 29:51SPEAKER_00: But the actual concept of Pinterest is actually really quite simple.
- 29:55SPEAKER_00: Another strategy could be on your blogging site.
- 29:58SPEAKER_00: So, as part of your website, you might have an area where you are blogging, and you can create blogs that talk about the thing that your product does.
- 30:09SPEAKER_00: And of course, as part of that, you're then offering your digital product, and then, of course, you can then pin those blogs on Pinterest, direct traffic from Pinterest to your website.
- 30:21SPEAKER_00: So you're starting to build this ecosystem for traffic to flow from Pinterest right through to your website, and it sounds very simple, but it's equally very powerful, and I think that's why sometimes Pinterest can get overlooked because people seem to overcomplicate the concept of what Pinterest is about.
- 30:42SPEAKER_00: So that is a really great way of getting started with selling your digital products, and of course, if you're building an email list, every time somebody buys one of your digital products, they of course are going into your email list, so you're building your email list alongside selling your digital products.
- 31:00SPEAKER_00: Now, one thing that I would encourage anybody that is selling digital products is to make sure that you are tracking the metrics behind your sales, so you want to be tracking the performance of your product to make sure that it's actually working for you, and also if you are putting your product on different platforms, you want to get the metrics behind each platform so that you know where it's performing the best.
- 31:27SPEAKER_00: Always track, always get access to the data and make sure that you are keeping your eye on what's working and what's not working, and then of course, you put your energies into where it's working, and then you move away from where it's not working.
- 31:42SPEAKER_00: Of course, I know getting started with anything can feel overwhelming at the beginning.
- 31:47SPEAKER_00: In order to avoid the overwhelm, you just need to be really clear on what it is you're trying to achieve.
- 31:54SPEAKER_00: Get really clear, start small and focus on creating one really solid product at a time.
- 32:04SPEAKER_00: You want to minimize the overwhelm and you want to be able to take action, and you can only do that with clarity.
- 32:12SPEAKER_00: So, whether it's a course or it's an ebook or a set of templates, just focus on creating one product and launch it and build from there.
- 32:24SPEAKER_00: Now, it might be that you have to try and test different ways of doing your launch.
- 32:30SPEAKER_00: That's perfectly normal.
- 32:32SPEAKER_00: Nobody launches the first time and it's a complete success.
- 32:36SPEAKER_00: They may have aspects of it that were successful, but there will also be parts of it that they would be learning from, and that's the point.
- 32:45SPEAKER_00: You have to do it the first time in order to be able to learn about how it needs to be done.
- 32:52SPEAKER_00: I think sometimes we can get so hung up on not making mistakes and not failing and in not being perfect that we forget that the magic is in taking the action, doing it, and getting it done.
- 33:06SPEAKER_00: It's as simple as that.
- 33:08SPEAKER_00: So by focusing on quality over quantity, you'll be able to perfect what it is that you're going to be offering over time, and then you'll be able to gradually scale without feeling overwhelmed because you'll have learned the things that you will have needed to learn in order to do what you need to do.
- 33:28SPEAKER_00: And the best thing is you'll have the energy and the clarity to start building a sustainable business one step at a time.
- 33:37SPEAKER_00: So as you work towards creating passive income in your business, remember to stay engaged with your audience, build that audience, get clear on who they are, what they need, and how you can help, and avoid overloading yourself with too many products at once and focus on building a really strong foundation at the beginning because from that everything else will fall into place.
