- 0:39SPEAKER_05: Welcome in everybody to the Talk and Tech Podcast powered by Guns Up Nation, part of the Guns Up Nation Podcast Network.
- 0:46SPEAKER_05: I am your host, Steven Rodriguez, my co-host Tristan McGonagall.
- 0:49SPEAKER_05: Tristan, what is up, my dude?
- 0:51SPEAKER_05: We're back.
- 0:52SPEAKER_04: We are so after another hiatus.
- 0:55SPEAKER_04: The band broke up once again, but we set aside our differences to come back to the mics.
- 1:01SPEAKER_05: I just I can't take so much of you.
- 1:03SPEAKER_05: Now it needs to be spread out more.
- 1:06SPEAKER_04: You decided to move a state away.
- 1:08SPEAKER_04: You know, you're crossing rivers, you know, you're going to a place that's culturally not America, and you're you're just sitting here trying to act like I'm I'm the one that's the issue here.
- 1:18SPEAKER_04: You know, you're you're you're the one that's like out there running to God knows where in the swamp.
- 1:22SPEAKER_05: Hey man, you know, the only good thing that comes from living in Louisiana is that I can go to the Walmart and buy me a bottle of whatever liquor I need to, because they just sell whatever they want in Walmart here.
- 1:36SPEAKER_05: Um, and also I can legally gamble, and that's what I did this weekend.
- 1:40SPEAKER_04: You you can see you're an act like that's a big dub.
- 1:43SPEAKER_04: Don't get me wrong.
- 1:43SPEAKER_04: Being able to buy refill on your liquor while you're grocery shopping for eggs is a big plus.
- 1:49SPEAKER_04: Don't get me wrong here.
- 1:50SPEAKER_04: But can you find even halfway decent Mexican food on that side of the border?
- 1:56SPEAKER_05: No, we don't even try.
- 1:57SPEAKER_05: Yeah, so I grew up we we grew up in San Antonio.
- 2:01SPEAKER_05: I'm not gonna try the Mexican food over here in the swamp.
- 2:04SPEAKER_05: I'm just not.
- 2:05SPEAKER_05: But I will say the casinos are a big plus.
- 2:08SPEAKER_05: Uh, we had uh the fiance's brother came into town and we won some money this weekend, so we're big winners.
- 2:14SPEAKER_04: Well, what would y'all do?
- 2:16SPEAKER_05: We did uh we just played the wheel of fortune.
- 2:18SPEAKER_05: We literally wheel play what slots, yeah.
- 2:21SPEAKER_05: It was the wheel of fortune game.
- 2:22SPEAKER_05: Slots, it it was I was hoping for something fun.
- 2:25SPEAKER_05: Like it's actually a fantastic trip because we go in to La Burge Casino over here, which is one of the nicer ones over here in Baton Rouge, and we immediately sit down, me and Jeremy, and boom, we both win a couple hundred bucks each, like immediately right off the bat.
- 2:43SPEAKER_05: No, it doesn't suck.
- 2:45SPEAKER_04: If I was in that situation, I would have stopped right there and said, I'll see you at the bar.
- 2:49SPEAKER_04: I'm gonna go celebrate these winnings.
- 2:51SPEAKER_04: That's what that would be my exact reaction.
- 2:54SPEAKER_05: I have much more control uh in that part now.
- 2:57SPEAKER_05: Now, when we were in Vegas when I turned 21, no, I did not have control, but now I I do have control.
- 3:03SPEAKER_05: I gamble the money that I put in originally and we keep the winnings, and we're gonna spend it over in Fredericksburg this weekend where we oh yes, we will uh see each other once again.
- 3:13SPEAKER_04: We will be down in the cellars of the hill country where near we're not not too far from where Steven and I grew up, in over in Fredericksburg.
- 3:20SPEAKER_04: So if anyone, if any of the treasure listeners are out there sipping on some wine this weekend, please hit us up, let us know.
- 3:27SPEAKER_04: But uh, the people don't log on to talking tech to hear us talk about our casino winnings or what wine we're sipping or what we could buy at our grocery stores.
- 3:37SPEAKER_04: They're they're logging on to see how dumb are our takes today when it comes to tech tech sports.
- 3:42SPEAKER_05: Yes, yes, and to that point, I put out a tweet before this weekend, obviously, Texas Tech Baseball.
- 3:48SPEAKER_05: We're gonna get to that in a second.
- 3:50SPEAKER_05: Huge series sweep over the Oklahoma State Cowboys.
- 3:53SPEAKER_05: I put out a tweet right before that, basically saying, you know, not understanding why D1 baseball kept putting us so high.
- 4:00SPEAKER_05: You know, they D1 baseball has been on the tech train all year.
- 4:03SPEAKER_05: They've been saying, hey, the Red Raiders are good, they are a top 10 team in the nation.
- 4:08SPEAKER_05: Everybody else was kind of putting us in the 20s, and maybe some were unranked.
- 4:12SPEAKER_05: You know, we had some serious flaws in this team.
- 4:15SPEAKER_05: Uh, you know, our Sundays were looking horrible.
- 4:17SPEAKER_05: Uh, we could not find that third starting pitcher uh to really get us a couple wins.
- 4:22SPEAKER_05: Midweeks were awful.
- 4:23SPEAKER_05: I mean, we were dropping games to New Mexico, Abilene Christian.
- 4:27SPEAKER_05: It was bad.
- 4:27SPEAKER_05: It was bad.
- 4:29SPEAKER_05: But what never sputtered was our first two starters with uh with Morris and Birdsell.
- 4:36SPEAKER_05: Those games, we always had a chance to win.
- 4:38SPEAKER_05: I mean, those guys are two of the top pitchers in the country right now.
- 4:43SPEAKER_05: And watching them, they proved it in the Oklahoma State game.
- 4:45SPEAKER_05: Uh, and it I mean, baseball, tech baseball, turning it right around, man.
- 4:49SPEAKER_04: I mean, when we look at the Big 12 conference series here that we played in, the only time we have lost on Friday or Saturday against any Big 12 team was TCU, where we got swept all three days.
- 5:01SPEAKER_04: Other than that, Friday, Saturday are dubs across the board, which is incredibly impressive.
- 5:06SPEAKER_04: We won, we've we have won nearly every single Big 12 series, minus TCU, who is our biggest competition for the Big 12 trophy right now.
- 5:13SPEAKER_04: Um, and you gotta feel good about that.
- 5:15SPEAKER_04: You gotta feel good about the way the season has rounded out because this looks like a very successful tech season that we expect.
- 5:22SPEAKER_04: But a lot of people are going to the season saying that tech doesn't have it, you know.
- 5:25SPEAKER_04: Uh before the season started, you know, that's obviously whenever you start really digging into some of the national college baseball, what they expect out of the season.
- 5:32SPEAKER_04: Over also in the D1 baseball podcast, they were thinking that maybe TechStech didn't have it in them this year.
- 5:38SPEAKER_04: And uh, I've also listened to other uh uh big uh other baseball college baseball podcasts that were saying maybe tech is kind of done right now, you know, maybe the magic is gone, but it's not, man.
- 5:47SPEAKER_04: Tim Tadlock.
- 5:48SPEAKER_04: I don't know who the heck thought Tim Tadlock didn't have it in him to put it together because, dude, he's a magician, he does it every year.
- 5:56SPEAKER_04: At least we're good, we're good every year.
- 5:57SPEAKER_04: We're not this good every year, but we're good every year.
- 6:00SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I said it uh when when our buddy Joe Goodman asked us a couple questions for some of his articles.
- 6:06SPEAKER_05: He was asking, you know, what sport is Texas Tech gonna be good in for the future?
- 6:10SPEAKER_05: And it's it's baseball.
- 6:11SPEAKER_05: We're always gonna finish top half of the conference as long as Tim Tadlock is here.
- 6:15SPEAKER_05: And for this team to do that, this is we could probably all agree this is probably one of our least talented rosters in a while for Texas Tech.
- 6:25SPEAKER_05: I mean, and that's no that's no shot at this year's team, that's just a testament to the amount of MLB players that we have going through this program constantly, so especially the last few years.
- 6:36SPEAKER_05: And I mean, when we were looking at this team, there were serious flaws.
- 6:41SPEAKER_05: Whether those flaws are 100% fixed, I don't know yet.
- 6:44SPEAKER_05: But I mean, they really showed it against the number three team in the nation at their house.
- 6:50SPEAKER_05: We took all three games from Oklahoma State this weekend.
- 6:53SPEAKER_04: Um, best team in the conference right now, or over to that point.
- 6:57SPEAKER_05: You're lying if you are telling me that you thought we were gonna even win this series.
- 7:03SPEAKER_05: Uh, you know, for everybody was just hoping, hey, maybe we can get one.
- 7:08SPEAKER_05: You know, all we need is one.
- 7:10SPEAKER_05: We're just trying to get, you know, a two seed, we're trying to do this, and then we go in there, win three straight at their place.
- 7:17SPEAKER_05: I mean, it's it's ridiculous.
- 7:18SPEAKER_05: It's honestly ridiculous how uh well we played this weekend.
- 7:22SPEAKER_05: Um, I'm super proud of this team, and I mean the momentum is swinging in the right direction for us.
- 7:28SPEAKER_04: Absolute Road Warriors, man.
- 7:30SPEAKER_04: It's it's not easy to go into number three's stadium, and I guess it's a storied program like Oklahoma State, who's good at all times as well, usually, um, to and pull this off is phenomenal.
- 7:40SPEAKER_04: And I just want to do a quick side note.
- 7:42SPEAKER_04: Oklahoma State looks like they have a beautiful ballpark.
- 7:45SPEAKER_04: I was very impressed with the way that their facilities and in ballpark looked.
- 7:50SPEAKER_04: Like well, stuff like that.
- 7:51SPEAKER_04: It's like, man, Texas Tech could really up the game with up the antsy with that kind of stuff.
- 7:56SPEAKER_04: And I'm so glad we finally are because you know Oklahoma State's been good a long time and they're still investing in that.
- 8:02SPEAKER_04: So I'm looking forward to seeing us replicate that as well.
- 8:06SPEAKER_04: But just just phenomenal work to go in and do that uh all three days.
- 8:11SPEAKER_04: It's never easy to do that against literally any D1 program because everyone's good enough to beat anybody, especially in this sport on any day.
- 8:18SPEAKER_04: Like that's how baseball goes.
- 8:20SPEAKER_04: So it's just it's so great to see things go our way, even though we got a little sweaty sometimes, yeah.
- 8:26SPEAKER_04: But we we we did the important part.
- 8:28SPEAKER_04: We won.
- 8:28SPEAKER_04: Good teams win.
- 8:29SPEAKER_05: Hey man, game one and game three were very, very stressful, especially towards the end.
- 8:35SPEAKER_05: Uh, but you know, to win those tight games, it gives some of those relievers, some of those guys that we haven't really had a lot of confidence in, gives them a boost.
- 8:43SPEAKER_05: Uh, you know, we were still without Trendon Parish, we were without Brendan Gurton.
- 8:47SPEAKER_05: These are two guys that have been, you know, kind of bright spots in the in the uh in the bullpen there.
- 8:54SPEAKER_05: And for us not to have them, uh, we had Mason Molina step up in game one.
- 8:59SPEAKER_05: Uh we had uh just a bunch of guys that came off and and got some really key strikeouts at opportune times, um, you know, kind of held them as they were rallying.
- 9:09SPEAKER_05: Uh because because Obama State's a damn good team.
- 9:12SPEAKER_05: I mean, they had that one guy.
- 9:13SPEAKER_05: Oh my god, 50, I think 56, the the like bleach blonde, massive tree trunk arm dude who hit the he hit like a 513-foot bomb in the first game.
- 9:26SPEAKER_05: Uh, every time that guy stepped up, I was terrified.
- 9:29SPEAKER_05: But um, but no, I mean, I actually got to watch a good amount.
- 9:33SPEAKER_05: This is probably the first series that I've watched almost all the way through all three games because this was such a massive, we really needed this one.
- 9:40SPEAKER_05: And to get a sweep, I mean, we're in we're in we control our own destiny now.
- 9:45SPEAKER_05: We're 14 and 7 in the Big 12.
- 9:47SPEAKER_05: Uh, we we're competing now with TCU, Oklahoma State, Oklahoma.
- 9:53SPEAKER_05: All four of us are kind of all right next to each other.
- 9:56SPEAKER_05: And I mean, again, you win these next three games against Oklahoma, you're the Big 12 champs.
- 10:02SPEAKER_05: So we control our own destiny.
- 10:04SPEAKER_05: And we've, I mean, this this series win against Oklahoma State is what provided us that opportunity.
- 10:09SPEAKER_05: So it was massive.
- 10:10SPEAKER_04: Feels dang good to get this on the road.
- 10:12SPEAKER_04: Uh, Oklahoma State was a favorite to win the night to win a national championship this year.
- 10:15SPEAKER_04: That they were loaded, and everyone thought that they uh out of the Big 12, it'd be Texas or Oklahoma State.
- 10:20SPEAKER_04: L LMAO, at what I just said with the first team.
- 10:23SPEAKER_04: But everyone thought that Texas or Oklahoma State would come out of the Big 12 with real shots at taking it all in Omaha.
- 10:29SPEAKER_04: To be able to accomplish that, I mean, we might see Oklahoma State again in Omaha if all things go right, right?
- 10:35SPEAKER_04: So just a fantastic time, and it's always good to beat those copycats, you know what I mean?
- 10:40SPEAKER_04: You can't beat the original, baby three and oh, but uh, you're right, absolutely right, man.
- 10:44SPEAKER_04: We got a whole week here coming up against uh Oklahoma to to rest up, get it right.
- 10:49SPEAKER_04: Uh game one's on a Thursday.
- 10:50SPEAKER_04: But the great thing is, is it's gonna be in Lubbock, Texas, and it's gonna be the last conference games here in Lubbock and in the whole season.
- 10:59SPEAKER_04: So I'm sure the Lubbock Faithful and uh any any students that are left in the in the uh in the hub city will be showing out and Dan Law will get loud, especially with the expectations we have now.
- 11:09SPEAKER_04: Uh we'll be ranked very highly or number five right now.
- 11:13SPEAKER_04: So this is this is forming up to be the perfect storm for us.
- 11:17SPEAKER_04: Unfortunately, last time we met up with Oklahoma and in Hodgetown over there in Amarillo, uh just put a beating on us, man.
- 11:25SPEAKER_04: And it was it was ugly.
- 11:26SPEAKER_04: I I was watching that one and it got out of hand pretty quick.
- 11:29SPEAKER_04: It was a it was a high-scoring game, but Oklahoma really put it to us, and you just can't let that happen again, especially at home.
- 11:36SPEAKER_04: Um, and it kind of sucks because you kind of feel like Gamarillo is home, right?
- 11:39SPEAKER_04: It was obviously it's gonna be Red Raiders in that ballpark.
- 11:41SPEAKER_04: Gamarilla is absolutely a Texas town, Texas Tech Town.
- 11:43SPEAKER_04: So it's just let's get it together here in Dan Law because if we sweep this, we could be hoisting up yet another Big 12 trophy under Tim Tadlock.
- 11:53SPEAKER_05: Yeah, and I mean you look at our record 35 and 16 overall.
- 11:57SPEAKER_05: Only three of those losses have come at home.
- 11:59SPEAKER_05: So we are we've always, I mean, this whole season, we've clearly been a much different team at home than on the road, uh, until really this past weekend where we just showed out in Stillwater.
- 12:10SPEAKER_05: Um, so maybe that's another you know, boost of confidence to this team.
- 12:14SPEAKER_05: Um, like I said, I got to watch pretty much every game.
- 12:18SPEAKER_05: Uh, win game one, seven to six, game two was uh pretty breezy nine and nine to three win.
- 12:24SPEAKER_05: Uh Brandon Birdsell again, just automatic.
- 12:27SPEAKER_05: I mean, that dude he went through seven innings, I believe, and uh he was just phenomenal.
- 12:31SPEAKER_05: And then game three, another nail biter, six to four.
- 12:34SPEAKER_05: Uh, it looked like in the bottom of the eighth there in game three that uh that Oklahoma State was gonna rally and just finally sneak one in.
- 12:42SPEAKER_05: But uh again, we got some huge plays uh from our relieving pitchers, and uh I mean, I I still can't believe it.
- 12:50SPEAKER_05: I still can't believe that we swept Oklahoma State.
- 12:53SPEAKER_05: I was not expecting even one win.
- 12:55SPEAKER_04: Yeah, you gotta enjoy victories like this, man.
- 12:57SPEAKER_04: It's just it's it's not small by any means.
- 13:00SPEAKER_04: Just we we can soak this up because every national media that covers college baseball put Oklahoma State pretty much across the board to win this.
- 13:10SPEAKER_04: And it's just a phenomenal victory.
- 13:12SPEAKER_04: It's just hats off to the boys, boys on diamond, obviously skipper as well.
- 13:15SPEAKER_04: So, man, I feel real good about taking it to the Sooners this this weekend to to wrap up the season, and then we can start looking forward to where things get real, you know, after the Big 12 tournament, and then really look at where we're set up to get to Omaha.
- 13:27SPEAKER_05: Yeah, we'll get uh here in just a second, we'll talk about the kind of the what needs to happen for tech and uh everybody else and kind of what's what's the outlook for the Big 12 right now.
- 13:38SPEAKER_05: But I did want to touch on one thing because a couple Twitter users reached out to us uh on our post today and wanted us to talk about the freshmen because they were great uh this past series.
- 13:47SPEAKER_05: Uh Owen Washburn and Hudson White, those two guys, I mean, were fantastic, key plays at the right time.
- 13:55SPEAKER_05: Hudson White is and Washburn too, these guys are the future of the team.
- 14:01SPEAKER_05: And I mean, for them to step up in the biggest moment, you know, you got Jayce Young, you got uh Kurt Wilson, you got Parker Kelly, you got Ty Coleman, guys that have been there before.
- 14:11SPEAKER_05: These two coming in as freshmen and playing as well as they did against one of the best teams in the nation.
- 14:17SPEAKER_05: I mean, it's just it's fantastic.
- 14:19SPEAKER_05: We uh and you know, we knew that tech was always going to be good, but this is just you know, insurance that we're just gonna be awesome with these two guys.
- 14:28SPEAKER_04: I mean, having young guys step up like they did just bodes so well for the future of the program.
- 14:32SPEAKER_04: I mean, it just kidding, these kids will probably only get better as they get more experience and get in more years in and tadlock system.
- 14:39SPEAKER_04: And with the brand new training facility opening up soon, the shoot man, it's it things are about to get awesome for the young guys.
- 14:46SPEAKER_04: So hats off to them.
- 14:48SPEAKER_04: Huge collapse there.
- 14:49SPEAKER_04: So that's that's all I can say about it.
- 14:51SPEAKER_05: For sure, for sure.
- 14:52SPEAKER_05: So, all right, Big 12 right now, Texas Tech sit at 14 and 7.
- 14:57SPEAKER_05: TCU, who does not play any more Big 12 teams, they're set in stone at 16 and 8.
- 15:04SPEAKER_05: Uh, Oklahoma State and Oklahoma are both tied at 13 and 8 in conference.
- 15:09SPEAKER_05: So basically, Texas Tech, if we sweep the series against OU, we outright win the Big 12.
- 15:15SPEAKER_05: We're gonna be the number one seed going into the Big 12 tournament.
- 15:18SPEAKER_05: We can drop one game and we would be tied with TCU and uh Oklahoma State.
- 15:26SPEAKER_05: If Oklahoma State sweeps Baylor like they probably will this weekend, um oh Oklahoma will be knocked knocked out of a chance at the Big 12 with just one loss in Loving.
- 15:37SPEAKER_05: Okay.
- 15:37SPEAKER_05: So it's looking like I mean, we do we control our own destiny here.
- 15:42SPEAKER_05: Texas Tech, if we go we win these three games against OU, we are the Big 12 champions.
- 15:49SPEAKER_05: We lose one game, we will tie with TCU.
- 15:52SPEAKER_05: TCU will be the one seed because they have the tiebreaker over us, uh, because they won swept uh swept our series earlier in the year.
- 15:59SPEAKER_05: So basically, if we win the series, we win the Big 12.
- 16:04SPEAKER_05: Um this this weekend against Oklahoma.
- 16:07SPEAKER_05: So that's good news.
- 16:08SPEAKER_04: Sounds like OU and TechTech both have a lot to play for, though.
- 16:12SPEAKER_04: This is gonna be a pretty explosive series, you know.
- 16:14SPEAKER_04: Obviously, OU has to fight even harder.
- 16:16SPEAKER_04: Um, so this is gonna be one to watch, man.
- 16:18SPEAKER_04: I think you gotta block off Thursday and Friday and Saturday just just to watch these games because this is gonna get real, man.
- 16:24SPEAKER_04: Um shoot, man.
- 16:26SPEAKER_04: It'd be awesome if we get sweep all three.
- 16:29SPEAKER_04: To get that.
- 16:29SPEAKER_04: I hate sharing titles.
- 16:31SPEAKER_04: I swear, whenever we're sharing a title in baseball, it's always with TCU.
- 16:34SPEAKER_04: So I don't want that to happen.
- 16:36SPEAKER_04: Um, but man, credit where it's due.
- 16:39SPEAKER_04: Year one under a new coach with TCU, mad mad impressive to be able to pull this off to be here.
- 16:44SPEAKER_04: So, uh, dude, baseball is about to come to a head here, man.
- 16:48SPEAKER_04: It's just I don't know what more you could say other than this is just a huge series for both teams, and that's what makes sports so dang fun this time of year.
- 16:56SPEAKER_04: So it's gonna be one to watch.
- 16:58SPEAKER_05: Yeah, and another big another key point about winning sweeping this series against Oklahoma State.
- 17:02SPEAKER_05: You're looking like you're probably gonna host a regional, which would be absolutely.
- 17:07SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 17:07SPEAKER_05: So that I mean that's the biggest news here.
- 17:09SPEAKER_05: If you can, I think if you go two and one against OU, you're probably hosting a regional, which I mean is is what you need.
- 17:16SPEAKER_05: You need you need games in Lubbock because we are what I think 20 and 3 at home right now.
- 17:23SPEAKER_05: So I you know that's all the more reason uh to get some games in Lubbock, advance to another super regional, do all that good stuff.
- 17:31SPEAKER_05: So um, yeah, you're looking at two and one, three and oh for the sweep.
- 17:36SPEAKER_05: You win the Big 12.
- 17:37SPEAKER_05: That's just a bonus, cherry on top.
- 17:39SPEAKER_04: Absolutely, man.
- 17:40SPEAKER_04: Uh it kind of sucks.
- 17:41SPEAKER_04: We're talking about the end of the of the last for the year here, man.
- 17:44SPEAKER_04: We're about to head into the dead zone.
- 17:45SPEAKER_04: So let's soak it up while we can, y'all.
- 17:48SPEAKER_04: Um, great things to look forward to with baseball, always are.
- 17:51SPEAKER_04: Uh, but uh man, I think have we talked our ears off with uh on the diamond yet or what?
- 17:56SPEAKER_05: Yeah, no, I think I think we're I think we can move on for baseball.
- 17:59SPEAKER_05: It was, I mean, just an unexpected, unexpected sweep that you're just like, oh, thank goodness.
- 18:05SPEAKER_05: We'll take it.
- 18:06SPEAKER_05: We'll take it all day.
- 18:07SPEAKER_05: Take it all day.
- 18:08SPEAKER_05: So love how good this baseball team is year in and year out.
- 18:12SPEAKER_05: But um, I did want to talk.
- 18:15SPEAKER_05: Uh this, I don't know if this is a little late, but uh I on Twitter, um, 1012, the 1012 network came out.
- 18:23SPEAKER_05: I guess they released uh or I guess they found some early football odds on win totals for the Big 12 uh for next season.
- 18:31SPEAKER_05: And I thought we should talk about those because it's it's I mean, it's football, it's football.
- 18:36SPEAKER_05: Football coming up.
- 18:37SPEAKER_05: I love talking about this.
- 18:38SPEAKER_05: I know it's early.
- 18:40SPEAKER_05: Obviously, guys can still get hurt, guys can, you know, uh a ton of different things can happen to alter these lines.
- 18:48SPEAKER_05: But as of right now, wanted to hit on on each team and just kind of see some early odds on who we think uh is maybe gonna exceed expectations or maybe not be as good as some might say.
- 18:59SPEAKER_04: Yeah, no, absolutely.
- 19:00SPEAKER_04: I mean, it's it's the next sport to talk about anyway.
- 19:02SPEAKER_04: So it's about to hit dig deep on on football.
- 19:06SPEAKER_04: So yeah, let's get into it, man.
- 19:07SPEAKER_04: Well, are you surprised by anything when we first look at this?
- 19:10SPEAKER_05: Um, so I guess I guess we'll you know rally them off real quick.
- 19:14SPEAKER_05: Baylor' Baylor's win total right now is set at eight and a half, Iowa State set at seven and a half, Kansas at two and a half, Kansas State at six, OU at nine, Oklahoma State at eight, TCU at seven, Texas eight and a half, Texas Tech five and a half, and West Virginia five and a half.
- 19:33SPEAKER_05: So, I mean, initially, I guess we just kind of go down uh by each team.
- 19:38SPEAKER_04: No, yeah, let's let's do that.
- 19:39SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 19:39SPEAKER_05: So Baylor, Baylor's uh Baylor's a tricky one because they lost a lot.
- 19:44SPEAKER_05: Um, you look at uh they had I think six guys drafted and then a couple more signed with teams.
- 19:49SPEAKER_05: So Baylor had a ton of NFL talent on this past year's team.
- 19:53SPEAKER_05: Uh Dave Viranda has uh once again completely turned that program around from a a losing squad to a uh to win in the Big 12.
- 20:03SPEAKER_05: So incredible.
- 20:04SPEAKER_05: Um, you know, and I just Baylor, you have to give them the benefit of the doubt, I think.
- 20:11SPEAKER_05: With they're the raining champs, yeah.
- 20:13SPEAKER_05: But you know, they lost, they lost a lot.
- 20:16SPEAKER_05: So yeah, setting it at eight and a half, I think is a it's a tricky line.
- 20:20SPEAKER_05: I think a lot of people are choosing under here.
- 20:22SPEAKER_05: I'm gonna go with the over on Baylor because first you just you have Dave Aranda, that's one of the best coaches in the Big 12 right now.
- 20:30SPEAKER_05: Uh, they decided to go with a different quarterback, they could have gone back to Gary Bohanan, they decided to go with Blake Shapen.
- 20:38SPEAKER_05: And I'm a massive Blake Shapen guy, I think he's really good.
- 20:42SPEAKER_05: So I think Baylor with him at the helm, they're gonna return one of the best defensive lines in the country.
- 20:49SPEAKER_05: I'm taking the over on Baylor eight and a half.
- 20:52SPEAKER_04: I think the difference here, and I know this man might be a bit of a cop out, but they're well coached, and you just can't you can't you can replace players, you can't replace coaches like like uh Dave Randa.
- 21:03SPEAKER_04: Well, he's done that.
- 21:04SPEAKER_04: Baylor is freaking awesome, and he's doing it the right way.
- 21:06SPEAKER_04: So I I think Baylor is set up to be at least top three in the Big 12.
- 21:12SPEAKER_04: So I I I think they won't have too much issue, maybe even getting to the Big 12 championship again.
- 21:17SPEAKER_04: Uh, I would give them the I would definitely give them the over on eight and a half.
- 21:20SPEAKER_04: Baylor's just kind of confusing.
- 21:21SPEAKER_05: I'm looking, I'm looking at their schedule right now.
- 21:23SPEAKER_05: I mean, they have two in the non-conference, they have a weak non-conference they play.
- 21:27SPEAKER_05: Albany, BYU, and Texas State.
- 21:29SPEAKER_05: So BYU BYU is not weak.
- 21:31SPEAKER_05: Yeah, no, BYU is not weak, and it's in Provo, but all but I mean Albany and Texas State are automatic dubs.
- 21:38SPEAKER_04: So the thing about standard out of conference right there, though.
- 21:43SPEAKER_05: Well, yeah, but but I mean they're automatic dubs, so they're two and one at worst, I think, right out of the right out of the non conference, unless something drastic happens.
- 21:52SPEAKER_05: But uh, what they do have is they are on the road for Oklahoma and Texas this year.
- 21:59SPEAKER_05: Um get to Texas in a second and what we think about them.
- 22:02SPEAKER_05: But um, you know, you don't want those two teams on the road.
- 22:05SPEAKER_05: Uh that's kind of been, you know, not necessarily with Texas, but they're the two, you know, big programs.
- 22:12SPEAKER_05: Uh so a lot of people can fit in those stadiums.
- 22:14SPEAKER_05: So um I I don't know.
- 22:16SPEAKER_05: I don't know.
- 22:17SPEAKER_05: I think I think Baylor will get to nine wins.
- 22:20SPEAKER_05: Uh whether they win the Big 12 or not, I think they'll get to nine wins.
- 22:23SPEAKER_05: I just think they're uh they're they're a machine right now.
- 22:26SPEAKER_05: Um Iowa State seven and a half.
- 22:29SPEAKER_05: Now I am slamming this under.
- 22:31SPEAKER_05: Um I I like Matt Campbell.
- 22:33SPEAKER_05: I think Matt Campbell's a good coach.
- 22:35SPEAKER_05: Um they lost everybody they lost everybody they lost Brock Purdy they lost Chase Allen they lost Charlie Kollar they lost Brees Hall they lost their whole offense except for Xavier Hutchinson who's a damn good wide receiver but I mean they it's just so unknown right now.
- 22:51SPEAKER_05: And for me to say Iowa State is going to win eight games this year I do not believe that I would take I would take Iowa State in the under and I'd slam it.
- 23:00SPEAKER_04: I mean Iowa State didn't have a great year this past year.
- 23:02SPEAKER_04: Yeah they they were the team we beat to make it to the bowl game and that was a very poor Texas tech.
- 23:09SPEAKER_04: I mean we probably weren't quite as bad as our record indicated I mean at the end of the year it it represented probably what we were but I Iowa State doesn't have the history to show that they can reload and rebuild immediately like I I think Matt Campbell's one of the best coaches in the whole Big 12 but I I just think that perhaps you know that can only go so far in his position because it's just there's no history there to show that they can do this.
- 23:34SPEAKER_04: I what I think isn't eight wins practically their ceiling as they've shown anyway so to bet the the over on an Iowa state is risky as hell I would go under on this one as well I know this is doesn't make for an interesting podcast but I it's just you got to look at the history Iowa State does not win more than eight games in in in in a common year even a good year.
- 23:53SPEAKER_04: Eight wins is a really good year for Iowa State I'm not trying not to try to sit here and poop on Iowa State I would love eight wins for once shit you know but please but it's just they don't have the history on it it's it's a reload if Matt Campbell pulls it off incredible that's awesome and Iowa State's in a great position moving forward to do so but I just think it maybe take a look a little more time for them.
- 24:13SPEAKER_05: Yeah I mean you got to think that Iowa game is probably going to be a loss for them um it usually is even in some of Iowa State's best years they just struggle against Iowa it's one of those things it's like it's almost equivalent to Texas Tech and UT even when UT has sucked some of these years we just can't beat them.
- 24:30SPEAKER_05: But maybe that sucked too yeah no that's i i'm not saying we haven't but um you know iowa state has really struggled in the Psyog game so i don't i don't think i'll give that to them um they play texas in Austin uh they play Oklahoma State in Stillwater eek they play uphill uh they have Baylor at home they have the Red Raiders at home they have the Red Raiders at home that's a game that I would have liked to have in Lubbock this year um because and that's kind of a common theme and one once we get to tech uh we'll talk about that but um you know I love I love the years when we play UT and O U in Lubbock because it gives us a better chance obviously but uh you know this is kind of one of those years where there's just a lot of teams that are kind of middle ground that you just want them to be in Lubbock so you have that little extra advantage but you're not we we can we can talk about that when we get to text tech.
- 25:25SPEAKER_05: Yeah we'll get there uh next up is Kansas the powerhouse jayhawks of football uh they're their over under right now is two and a half um this one's this one was tough this one's tough because do you know what they're out of conferences uh let me pull it up real quick I was looking it up earlier that's what decides it it is yeah it it really does because they've actually I think they've played some pretty good um pretty good non-conference schedules these last couple years but stop relax stop it they did who they play last year like Rutgers didn't was a power five team boston college or something 2021 who'd they play they played coastal carolina okay good great g5 team and that's what I'm saying didn't they play uh uh the raging cajuns too like a couple years ago maybe yeah so they played some like they played some like decent level g5 teams but the the thing is is they probably didn't mean to they probably didn't mean to schedule good g5s they probably yeah they always probably garbage when they scheduled them but now they're awesome listen I'm not trying to give any credit to how crap Kansas has been these last few years but I'm just saying you know that that that kind of matters and it looks like this year oh they they play Houston in the non-con which will probably uh they play Tennessee tech which should be a win that's a win uh and then they played Duke uh you know okay that's where it gets interesting yeah that's interesting i don't know they could beat duke i'm gonna go under though on kansas because you're gonna you're going under on two and a half i'm going under yes because they're gonna beat Tennessee tech and I think they either not I don't think they beat Houston and they're either gonna beat a Duke or and whatever the worst Big 12 team is that year at most.
- 27:21SPEAKER_04: But this is the thing like they go two and one in non-converts they just have to beat one Big 12 team that is a stretch if they do it I I know I know but they they somehow do pull it out of the hat right you can look back on the years where they like they beat a Big 12 team whether it's Texas LMAO sometimes it's us shit TCU.
- 27:42SPEAKER_04: You know like it's happened it has but on if I'm going logically I would go on the under because I just I think they're because you decide on the non-conference if they're play if they're playing like a uh a month uh louisiana monroe instead of U of H I I would slam the over but it's it's U of H.
- 27:59SPEAKER_04: They're they're good enough to compete with most P5 teams so I I I cannot do that.
- 28:05SPEAKER_05: I'm going over I'm going over with the Kansas Jayhawks uh well I think first disagreement you know I think they're gonna get one they're gonna get one big 12 win and I think they're also gonna win against Duke they have him at home i know it's not saying much for Kansas but they don't have to go on the road so against duke and that I think that game's gonna be at least close.
- 28:28SPEAKER_05: Yeah um Tennessee Tech will be a dub um they host let's see so Kansas hosts Iowa state TCU uh Oklahoma State uh Texas Aloha I have to stick with my pick but I think yours is a great is a is a good move because you said they what you said they hosted and TCU yeah and Texas at the at the beginning of the year too okay all right they they they might be able to pull one of those out they really think yeah I'm I'm going over on Kansas uh Kansas State is is super I don't know what the hell to do with this one it's six right now with Kansas State um they have in the non-conference they have South Dakota they have Missouri and they have Tulane so that's I mean I imagine that's at least two wins Missouri I guess is up in the air I don't know I don't know what to make of Kansas State.
- 29:30SPEAKER_04: I don't I really don't well they got Nebraska's quarterback right wasn't that what it was they got Martinez Martinez yeah and they have they have that uh one of the best running backs in the Big 12 is dudes Vaughn oh shit I forgot about so freaking Deuce Vaughn and mother I would probably go over because Kansas State is the one team in this entire conference you never want to doubt.
- 29:53SPEAKER_04: They always do better than they should it seems um it's a tough one though and I I think I think they're they have a real possibility starting out three and oh against all three of those teams and then they just got to get three more I mean that we've had this conversation with Texas Tech for the past 10 years I swear but but at this tech Kansas State has in a bit has been in much better shape than we have.
- 30:16SPEAKER_04: I mean they had Bill Snyder for the most time for for the most part this past decade and now I mean I I I I like their new coach and I climb's a good coach yeah I like Kleiman and I think they can get him to seven I would go over on K-State I I wouldn't bet this at all ever because I have no idea how K-State's gonna be this year.
- 30:35SPEAKER_05: A lot of people seem high on them I don't know if I'm really feeding into that they have Texas Tech at home they have Oklahoma State at home Texas at home and Kansas at home so you know again that Texas Tech State game I I'm gonna go under on Kansas State.
- 30:56SPEAKER_05: I don't think Martinez is all that great.
- 30:59SPEAKER_05: I mean he he was terrible at Nebraska Nebraska was terrible these last few years uh I don't know why he's all of a sudden hyped up to be you know a game changer for Kansas State at a quarterback but you're right about I mean Deuce Vaughn's one of the most electric players in the Big 12.
- 31:14SPEAKER_04: Their defense is always going to be at least solid uh they always have pretty good lines so I don't know man I think I think the difference with Martinez at Kansas State I mean Kansas State's a better team than Nebraska Nebraska sucks.
- 31:27SPEAKER_04: Nebraska has sucked for so long they have they have like they you know how UT has their coaching issue they have that like tenfold over in Lincoln.
- 31:36SPEAKER_04: So I I think I think once this once this kid who obviously you know Nebraska gets good players so once they get a a a good qb into the position of K State with reliable players around him I think you'll see him come into like a reliable quarterback you know he'll be stable but I I again so I so I'm gonna go with I'm gonna go with the over on that.
- 31:55SPEAKER_05: Yeah that's I mean that's fair I don't I don't blame either one for going under or over because I have no idea on Kansas State.
- 32:01SPEAKER_04: I initially chose over I'm gonna I'm gonna switch my answer to under it it was kind of funny to like you know talking to Travis about Iowa State and he I'm sure you can get the same answers out of Kansas State like saying how I wish Nebraska was in the Big 12 now so we can just sit there and beat on them.
- 32:16SPEAKER_04: You know because they had years and years of of of being beat by a good Nebraska now that Nebraska has fallen from grace is going lightly on it is is so it's just it's kind of funny to to look at that.
- 32:28SPEAKER_05: For sure for sure uh next up is OU at line set at nine um what are your thoughts on Oklahoma?
- 32:36SPEAKER_04: I mean that's that's an easy guess that they were going to be the the highest they're the most reliable team when it comes to wins in the Big 12 nine is really high though um is it high for Oklahoma is it I know it's a new coach but it's still Oklahoma I I think nine's the maximum I think nine's the ceiling oh you think nine you think nine wins is the ceiling for Oklahoma because the thing is is I think this is gonna be a pretty chaotic year in the Big 12.
- 33:08SPEAKER_05: I think there's gonna be a lot of losses I don't think we put a team in the in the in the in the playoff because I I just whenever you look at this this conference do you see a dominant team emerging I don't same with last year it was the same problem last year and yeah I I I would connect can I go with like even on nine can I can not not like over not under nine no you got to choose you got to choose oh you son of a that was a that was my deal with Kansas State I had to choose fine do you know what they're non conferences are you are you being my yeah I have it on the guy here what is they have uh Utep Kent State and Nebraska that is pitiful oh my goodness okay Nebraska played him pretty tight last year oh my god they did they played him tight last year I I know I know but and this one's gonna be in Lincoln I don't think Nebraska's very good either but like I don't know the old rivalry I don't know things get weird with that type of stuff I'll go under I'll go under I'll go under because I I just you know it's the reason why is because you know it's so funny seeing the only people that believe that this team is gonna win it all are oh you fans and and that's not that's not how it is every year you know a lot of teams a lot of years people are like oh you could be freaking real this year we've said it you know before but it's just not gonna happen under year one assistant coach Brent Benebles and so I'm going under yeah they do have Jeff Levy coming up to Norman uh he's a piece of shit person I was about to say wow he's a pretty well he's a pretty good and pretty good offensive coordinator so that's what I mean I'm not he's a bad dude but I just can't believe that's just been swept under the blanket because he's at OU now such such crap he's a Bryles he's in the family literally married our Bryals' daughter didn't he it's yeah and he also he was a one of the he'll we could get Joe on here and it's like he's one of the champions of keep our Bryals at Baylor or Bryals is innocent kind of stuff so it's just it's just crap man it just shows the favoritism of that but that's not why we're here but piece of piece of crap dude I'm gonna go under on OU2 um just because I Lincoln Riley is that good of a coach he is he is you know and and I think I I we just don't know about venables you know there's a there might be a reason that he didn't choose to be a head coach he had plenty of opportunities before this to become a head coach and now I know Oklahoma's a great job and you know you'd be kind of dumb to not accept that money but uh there there might be a reason why he didn't accept it before he's he's been offered good jobs I mean he was offered Texas tech.
- 35:45SPEAKER_04: I believe that and that's a good job I don't care what anyone says and it's just just to think that he was waiting for the pinnacle is kind of ridiculous.
- 35:54SPEAKER_04: They they wrote him a check he he couldn't say no to was what it was um but yeah again man I like I he's probably a good coach I mean he's been sought after for a reason but it's they don't have the defensive talent like Clemston does and he's gonna have this growing pain that he just he's gonna be tossed into a power pipe conference as a head coach and just I don't think he's gonna be able to do pull it together in year one and that's a lot to ask yeah and no I will say looking at their schedule they don't really have a tough road schedule they go they go two TCU they go to Iowa state to West Virginia and two Texas Tech so you know hey hey hey no I'm just saying I'm just saying it's not it like when you're just looking at that right now TCU I think is not going to be very good uh Iowa State I think has potential to not make a bowl either you could say the same thing with West Virginia and Texas Tech.
- 36:48SPEAKER_05: So I mean you know there's not it and obviously they play Texas at the cotton ball and and but you know Bedlam is in Norman they play Baylor in Norman uh you know so they they kind of have the schedule you know in their favor this year.
- 37:02SPEAKER_05: So I'm still gonna go under because I just I I think that highly of Lincoln Riley and what he did at that program.
- 37:07SPEAKER_05: So um yeah I don't think yeah now it's good that we can cheer for Lincoln now.
- 37:12SPEAKER_04: Yeah absolutely um yeah no I'm totally with you there.
- 37:16SPEAKER_04: It's just to laugh to to to to strike off Lincoln Riley like he was in special is ridiculous.
- 37:23SPEAKER_05: Yeah this this next school I'm absolutely pounding the over on Oklahoma State set at eight uh I'm absolutely uh yes they're gonna win nine nine or more games this year uh Mike Gundy you could probably say is is the best coach in the Big 12 if not Dave Aranda I mean he's just so consistent and even with uh a uh mid quarterback at best in uh in Sanders I still think Oklahoma State is is gonna find a way to be good.
- 37:51SPEAKER_04: Crap I was hoping we disagree so we could have a little more variety here but no i'm with you man i i think i think this is uh a window for my gundy here i think that since there's no clear favorite since he's always so consistently top four in the Big 12 that he can he can sit there and reach up and actually get it this time i mean he was he was a dive away from winning the Big 12 again so i i'm in on that as well i'm in on Oklahoma State going above eight is two i i think they're gonna outperform o you again obviously that's kind of the bar for them to meet and i think they'll do it again i bet they'll win bedlam too um i think i think uh going mike gundy versus lincoln riley is a matchup man but i think lincoln riley's a bit sharper on one side of the ball than he is so i don't think print benables can match mike gundy yeah yeah i think you're right um yeah that one was a pretty easy over for me uh this next one is a pretty easy under for me and that's TCU at seven um I think TCU is gonna have some growing pains um I I like uh obviously sunny dykes you know the Dykes family everything like that I don't think very highly as a coach I don't I didn't I didn't really want tech to hire him uh I was kind of in desperation mode at somebody else but Matt Wells and so I was like yeah we'll take him over Matt Wells but you know now that we've seen what Joey's done here I'm so glad we hired him over Sonny um I and I just don't know how that's gonna translate from SMU to TCU I I think at least for the first couple of years there they'll probably have some growing pains and be pretty bad.
- 39:21SPEAKER_04: You put it perfectly man I like uh what I was gonna say is you know I I was really hoping we got sunny too until Joey McGuire really emerged as the new band favorite.
- 39:29SPEAKER_04: Uh thank you gambling couchos for really taking off that hashtag train um but I I I'm absolutely with you man I mean SDMU has every advantage in the world when it comes to the American conference uh I mean there's only a few teams in the American conference that can match the advantages that they have and and sunny's still going to pull off grabbing a title in the American league.
- 39:49SPEAKER_04: So it kind of makes you question it and you kind of look back at his Cal tenure which was pretty bad and it's which is kind of surprising you know you would you would hope a guy coming out of Texas and all that uh going over to Cal who who probably has some good advantages over others in the Pac 12 still couldn't put it together to put in some decent seasons.
- 40:10SPEAKER_04: They don't expect a lot over in Berkeley still couldn't put together and now he's in Fort Worth where the expectations are higher even if there's maybe not quite as many people looking for it.
- 40:20SPEAKER_04: It's I don't think it's gonna happen.
- 40:21SPEAKER_04: I I think that TCU made an astronomical mistake in firing Gary Patterson.
- 40:27SPEAKER_04: I think he was the best thing that ever happened to that football program and they're fools for firing him for some okay years.
- 40:36SPEAKER_04: I just don't think you turn your back on a guy that did that to you and he's he's gonna he was gonna make it back eventually and they're always decent it's just unbelievable but I digress uh I'm with you man I I I'm so glad we hired uh uh Joey Maguire instead of sunny and I don't think that's just because we hired Joey Maguire instead of sunny and it's just me trying to convince myself I think this is 100% the truth that I think we made the right move and they're they're trying to move what was what was good at SMU but is it good enough to compete in a much better league you know you can't just you're gonna make SMU in Fort Worth how good is that you know like that's the question.
- 41:12SPEAKER_05: They also in the non-conference they go to Colorado and they go to SMU in this one so I think both of those are probably going to be L's for TCU if I'm just looking at it right wow even the SMU game I mean I think I don't know if SME's worse than cat uh than Colorado well and they kind of kept some continuity didn't they with uh did they hired within yeah they hired within so I don't know if smu is going to really you know struggle losing sunny as much as uh you know they they people might think they do SME's gonna want it more too oh yeah for sure they beat I mean they beat Tarl they're gonna beat Tarleton but they open up with Oklahoma so if you look at that they could start off one and three and that I mean that's a killer that's a that's a season ender for some guys they could get you know mentally out of it by that point when they're one and three um so I I don't know I think I think this could potentially be a very bad season for TCU I think so too.
- 42:09SPEAKER_05: Probably what I'm betting on.
- 42:10SPEAKER_04: I think I at best they get six wins and I I and Gary Patterson knew how to beat Texas tech.
- 42:17SPEAKER_04: We went back and forth a little bit with them but I I feel way better about playing uh sunny dykes for suddenly a sudden dykes tcu is way less way less scary than a Gary Patterson TCU.
- 42:30SPEAKER_04: And I think that just speaks to the legend they fired it's to because to me that feels like that feels like Kansas State firing Bill Snyder and I just that's just unfathomable to me.
- 42:41SPEAKER_04: But yeah anyway I think we get to uh now we get to move on right yeah absolutely and it's always uh it's always a fun conversation with the next one it's gonna be the Texas Longhorns set at eight and a half wins um I let me hear your thoughts before I go in on it eight and a half wins how I feel about that you know I'm slamming the under and okay and I know it sounds like a Texas tech fan just ragging on those folks in Austin but history has shown anytime Texas has any hype to do anything it's just not gonna go well and they're gonna be talented as hell yes but they had the same coach that lost to Kansas and won five games like that did not the most important part did not change and they didn't not a single UT player got drafted last season that shows how poorly these coaches utilize the immense talent they have in front of them so I have no faith that they do better than eight and a half I don't I I have a lot of thoughts on this I don't I still like Sarkeesian.
- 43:43SPEAKER_05: I don't think Sarkeesian is gonna be that guy and I don't know why no uh they decided to hire him for all that money in Alabama now I do understand I do understand getting rid of Tom Herman uh because this past year's draft class proved that Tom Herman could not develop guys so I don't blame Texas for moving on from him.
- 44:02SPEAKER_05: I don't really understand why they thought Sark was the guy.
- 44:04SPEAKER_05: Alabama.
- 44:06SPEAKER_05: But he's failed in multiple head coaching jobs.
- 44:09SPEAKER_05: Granted, there was a lot of personal stuff with that, but um Texas has not had a receiver as good as Xavier Worthy in a while.
- 44:20SPEAKER_05: They have not had a running back as good as B.
- 44:22SPEAKER_05: John Robinson in a while.
- 44:24SPEAKER_05: Those are two of what should be either the best running back in the Big 12 and the best wide receiver in the Big 12, or right there, you know.
- 44:33SPEAKER_05: So you're looking at that.
- 44:34SPEAKER_05: And then I think, you know, the quarterback situation is a toss-up, I think.
- 44:38SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 44:39SPEAKER_05: You know, a lot of people are high on yours.
- 44:41SPEAKER_05: Uh, he's got there's no doubt he's got tremendous talent.
- 44:44SPEAKER_05: It's just, you know, can you put it together as a he would be a true freshman this year if he didn't graduate early and do the whole Ohio State thing?
- 44:52SPEAKER_05: So he's, I mean, he's going into his first year.
- 44:55SPEAKER_05: He may have some growing paints, he may not.
- 44:57SPEAKER_05: Uh, he may be fantastic right off the bat.
- 45:00SPEAKER_05: So um, I I'm still gonna go under because Texas uh historically has underperformed, like you mentioned earlier.
- 45:08SPEAKER_05: But uh I could also see Texas being very good.
- 45:12SPEAKER_05: And normally I'm not that way with Texas going into a year.
- 45:16SPEAKER_05: I just automatically expect them to be bad.
- 45:18SPEAKER_05: This year's a little different.
- 45:20SPEAKER_05: I I could definitely see them being good.
- 45:23SPEAKER_04: I I don't I I'm not saying they're gonna be awful, I'm just saying they're not gonna win more than nine games, you know, which would be the over.
- 45:29SPEAKER_05: That's and that's a fair bet.
- 45:30SPEAKER_05: That's a fair bet.
- 45:31SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I'm I'm also betting the under here because I think Texas tends to underperform, yeah.
- 45:37SPEAKER_05: So uh, but uh and and I don't have a lot of faith in Sark.
- 45:41SPEAKER_05: I have faith in their players, I don't necessarily have faith in Sark.
- 45:45SPEAKER_04: No, I mean it's just it's it was a risk to hire the guy.
- 45:48SPEAKER_04: I mean, the the reason why they did it was I kept saying was is he was an assistant under Nick Saban, and that's uh uh you talk about a letter of reference, you know, like a letter of recommendation.
- 45:58SPEAKER_04: It's to have Nick Saban as the guy that that was uh coaching over you.
- 46:02SPEAKER_04: But I just kind of felt it kind of felt like a generic hire that other SEC teams do that whenever they're like just trying to compete with Alabama and it doesn't work, it never works, except for unless you have Kirby Smart, I guess.
- 46:13SPEAKER_04: So that's just how I feel with it, man.
- 46:15SPEAKER_04: It's there it's just history proves wrong on that side.
- 46:19SPEAKER_05: Yeah, so um let's skip Texas Tech, we'll save them for last.
- 46:23SPEAKER_05: Uh West Virginia, five and a half.
- 46:26SPEAKER_05: What are your thoughts?
- 46:29SPEAKER_04: Uh, I have to go under because I've gone I've gone too many overs to uh to make this work.
- 46:36SPEAKER_04: The reason why I go under on West Virginia is kind of the same conversation we just had about Texas, was it's just I don't know, I think Neil Brown was a promising candidate that just never panned out.
- 46:47SPEAKER_04: And I we we've we we've experienced that as Tech fans.
- 46:49SPEAKER_04: I mean, I think Cliff Kingsbury was that.
- 46:52SPEAKER_04: Um, but I I just I don't think Neil Brown, this is Neil Brown's desperation year.
- 46:57SPEAKER_04: This is his last shot at keeping his job, and that that never bodes well for a year.
- 47:02SPEAKER_04: It's just no matter what, unless you go and do great things, it's gonna be disappointing, and I think it disappoints.
- 47:08SPEAKER_04: I think there's just too much comment going against something.
- 47:10SPEAKER_04: The fan apathy has really set in, and I don't know if Morgan Town will be all that scary to go into because of it.
- 47:17SPEAKER_05: You know, but wouldn't it be fitting for him to win six games and then just continue that like oh well we made a bowl game, but like I don't see that happening uh with the AD.
- 47:30SPEAKER_04: I think the AD is like nah, time to move on.
- 47:33SPEAKER_05: Well, we did the same thing with Matt Wells, probably everything, yeah.
- 47:36SPEAKER_05: Everything you're saying is right.
- 47:38SPEAKER_05: Uh, you know, I'm I'm still gonna I'm gonna say they win six games.
- 47:43SPEAKER_05: I'm going over on the five and a half.
- 47:46SPEAKER_05: I I don't know.
- 47:47SPEAKER_05: There, I mean, nothing is pointing that that's a good bet.
- 47:50SPEAKER_05: They play Pitt and they play Virginia Tech both away in non-con.
- 47:55SPEAKER_05: Uh, both of those are probably gonna be losses for West Virginia.
- 47:58SPEAKER_05: So that means they have to win what four Big 12 games.
- 48:02SPEAKER_05: Uh you you know, you think Kansas, um, you know, they they host TCU, uh, they host Kansas State.
- 48:12SPEAKER_05: Um, do they host us?
- 48:14SPEAKER_05: No, they come to Lubbock.
- 48:16SPEAKER_05: Um, they host Baylor.
- 48:19SPEAKER_05: I don't know, man.
- 48:20SPEAKER_05: I just think like I I don't think Neil Brown's a great coach either.
- 48:24SPEAKER_05: But I I don't know, some's telling me they're gonna win six games and just barely beat this this line.
- 48:29SPEAKER_04: It's been kind of funny looking at West Virginia because I feel like West Virginia and TechStank have had a lot in common this past decade.
- 48:36SPEAKER_04: You know, uh they started out really hot, or not not really hot, but like really good.
- 48:41SPEAKER_04: And they've really sputtered since then.
- 48:46SPEAKER_04: Um, and we've been there kryptonite, it seems, you know.
- 48:48SPEAKER_04: We we somehow keep getting wins over them.
- 48:50SPEAKER_04: And I remember a time, whenever we were in college, we would never beat West Virginia, you know, it's just and so it's kind of funny to see the switch there.
- 48:59SPEAKER_04: So I'm going under on them, like you said, like like I said earlier, and I think this is Neil Brown's last year, and I think even if they go over, if they win six games, I don't think it comes back.
- 49:09SPEAKER_03: You gotta move on at that point, yeah.
- 49:11SPEAKER_03: No kind of thing.
- 49:13SPEAKER_05: I think I think the ultimate West Virginia move and Neil Brown move would to be them winning six games and then he gets fired.
- 49:19SPEAKER_05: Yeah, well, I think that's I mean that's just that's what they're destined for.
- 49:23SPEAKER_05: They're destined, they're their their ceiling is mediocrity with Neil Brown.
- 49:27SPEAKER_05: What?
- 49:28SPEAKER_04: Oh, with Neil Brown, I was about to say I was saying with Mountaineers in general.
- 49:32SPEAKER_04: No, no, no, no, no.
- 49:33SPEAKER_04: No, yeah, I think I think TechSec and West Virginia have like the same ceilings, but um, it's just yeah, I I I think I yeah, like you said, exactly.
- 49:41SPEAKER_04: I think mediocrity is a season ceiling with them.
- 49:43SPEAKER_04: I think Holgerson was probably the best they've had the recently.
- 49:47SPEAKER_04: I think Holgerson's a better coach, so yeah, I think so too.
- 49:50SPEAKER_04: That guy kind of rocks.
- 49:52SPEAKER_04: I'm kind of in love with him now.
- 49:53SPEAKER_04: Dana, yes, he's so cool, dude.
- 49:57SPEAKER_04: Like, I'm swearing everything I see on social media related to him is awesome.
- 50:02SPEAKER_04: Like the whole tweet of like, what's it like interviewing for an assistant coach position?
- 50:05SPEAKER_04: I take him out golfing and and we drink a shitload of beers, is what he said verbatim.
- 50:11SPEAKER_04: I'm like, that's awesome, bro.
- 50:12SPEAKER_04: That's like that guy's the man.
- 50:14SPEAKER_04: Like, how is he not the man after that?
- 50:16SPEAKER_05: Like, that's so cool.
- 50:18SPEAKER_05: It's true, it's true.
- 50:20SPEAKER_05: Um, yeah, I so you're going you're going under on West Virginia.
- 50:24SPEAKER_05: I'm gonna go a slight over.
- 50:25SPEAKER_05: I think they're gonna win six games.
- 50:27SPEAKER_05: I don't know why.
- 50:27SPEAKER_05: Nothing's pointing in that direction, but I'm gonna choose it.
- 50:30SPEAKER_05: Um, all right, let's go.
- 50:33SPEAKER_05: Finale.
- 50:34SPEAKER_05: Our boy Texas Tech Red Raiders set at five and a half.
- 50:42SPEAKER_05: Tristan, okay, you go first.
- 50:46SPEAKER_04: As the commits would say, the University of Texas Tech.
- 50:51SPEAKER_04: They're winning more than the commits games.
- 50:53SPEAKER_04: They're winning more than five and a half games.
- 50:54SPEAKER_04: We're winning at least six games.
- 50:56SPEAKER_04: I'm not saying we're winning more than six games.
- 50:58SPEAKER_04: I'm saying we're winning at least six games.
- 51:00SPEAKER_04: Um because I think that the pat the coaching is more so there now than it was last season.
- 51:11SPEAKER_04: I'm not saying the head coach himself in a coaching situation is necessarily better than Matt Wells, but I do think the coordinators are better.
- 51:20SPEAKER_04: I do think that Zach Kidley and uh Mike DeRooter are better than the the uh the Tim my bad Tim DeRuder are better than the coordinators we have had.
- 51:29SPEAKER_04: And I think that the transfers we'll bring in are refilling the the holes that we're missing.
- 51:35SPEAKER_04: And if we won six games last year under a poor coach slash uh internship year, I think that we can pull it off again because uh I I just I think that Joey McGuire expects at least six wins, and I think he's gonna will himself to get there.
- 51:53SPEAKER_05: I think because like whenever we whenever we look at the the what the non-conference, we got we got who again, we have we have Houston, we have NC State, and then we have uh Murray State.
- 52:04SPEAKER_04: Three winnable games for us 100 to start off the year in a good in a good place.
- 52:10SPEAKER_04: So I I really do think that we get six wins.
- 52:13SPEAKER_04: What about you?
- 52:15SPEAKER_05: Uh NC State is going to be a tough game.
- 52:19SPEAKER_05: Uh it's gonna be it's in Raleigh.
- 52:21SPEAKER_05: Uh I probably right now would not expect Texas Tech to win that game.
- 52:25SPEAKER_05: Wow, really?
- 52:26SPEAKER_05: No, I wouldn't.
- 52:26SPEAKER_05: It's it's an away game.
- 52:28SPEAKER_05: It's against it's against what's probably gonna be a preseason top 25 team.
- 52:32SPEAKER_05: I mean, they're returning a lot.
- 52:34SPEAKER_05: Uh I think they're returning their coaches, all their coordinators.
- 52:37SPEAKER_05: Nobody left.
- 52:38SPEAKER_05: They have a bunch of continuity going on with that program.
- 52:41SPEAKER_05: Um, so right now I would not put Texas Tech meeting NC State right now.
- 52:45SPEAKER_05: Houston's a toss-up.
- 52:46SPEAKER_05: Houston's a toss-up.
- 52:47SPEAKER_05: I mean, I think we get them in Lubbock, but it's still a toss-up.
- 52:50SPEAKER_05: Uh, that's a good team, and they have a lot of returners.
- 52:53SPEAKER_04: Like we just kind of this is a tough season.
- 52:55SPEAKER_04: I know.
- 52:57SPEAKER_04: Oh my gosh.
- 52:58SPEAKER_05: It's a tough season.
- 52:59SPEAKER_05: We do have UT and OU coming to Lubbock.
- 53:02SPEAKER_05: Um, we have Baylor coming to Lubbock.
- 53:04SPEAKER_05: Um, but again, this is kind of a season where I'd rather play the mediocre teams in Lubbock versus on the road.
- 53:12SPEAKER_05: And I think we play, let me pull it up real quick.
- 53:15SPEAKER_04: I mean, uh if if we if we what we're saying, OU in Texas should be pretty mediocre then.
- 53:21SPEAKER_04: But history is mediocre for them is different.
- 53:25SPEAKER_04: History has shown that playing UT and OU at home doesn't make a look of a difference.
- 53:30SPEAKER_04: Even like especially with UT.
- 53:32SPEAKER_04: Like, I swear we're better off in Austin with UT.
- 53:35SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 53:36SPEAKER_05: So, like, you're playing on the road, you're playing Kansas State on the road, you're playing Oklahoma State on the road, you're playing TCU on the road, and you're playing Iowa State on the road.
- 53:48SPEAKER_05: I would rather have TCU, Iowa State, and Kansas State at home versus Texas and OU this year.
- 53:56SPEAKER_05: I just would because I think those games are going to be tighter.
- 53:59SPEAKER_05: I think it's, you know, in terms of talent levels, I think the teams are very similar.
- 54:03SPEAKER_05: Um, and uh the coaching is is very similar.
- 54:06SPEAKER_05: And now I I I honestly have no idea how Joey McGuire is going to be as a head coach.
- 54:11SPEAKER_05: I don't.
- 54:11SPEAKER_05: Right.
- 54:12SPEAKER_05: He's recruiting great, he's done everything right so far.
- 54:14SPEAKER_05: We just haven't seen him coach games yet.
- 54:16SPEAKER_05: And we haven't seen him coach games at a power five college football level.
- 54:21SPEAKER_05: He's been a great assistant, great recruiter, everything like that.
- 54:24SPEAKER_05: Zach Kittley's obviously shown that he's been a great coordinator at his at his stops.
- 54:28SPEAKER_05: Tim DeRuder has changed programs in just a year.
- 54:32SPEAKER_05: Uh once at Oregon, he was at AM.
- 54:34SPEAKER_05: He was he's been around the block.
- 54:36SPEAKER_05: So, you know, there's there's a lot that we could go in, and we're obviously gonna preview the team as we get a little closer to football.
- 54:43SPEAKER_04: Yeah, we'll we'll go deeper into all this.
- 54:44SPEAKER_05: Yeah, uh this is just uh initially, initially, when I'm looking at this, yes, I'm gonna hit the over because I think we're gonna be a bowl team this year.
- 54:54SPEAKER_05: Um, I I don't know if I'd be disappointed or not.
- 54:57SPEAKER_05: I I probably still would be disappointed uh if we didn't make a bowl game this year, even if it is Joey's first year.
- 55:03SPEAKER_05: But um, you know, I think uh I think I think we get six wins, six, seven wins.
- 55:09SPEAKER_05: Um yeah, but this Texas Tech team, the variance, I it could go all over the place.
- 55:14SPEAKER_05: I could see us winning four games, I could see us winning potentially like eight or nine games, you know.
- 55:19SPEAKER_05: So it's uh there's there's holes on certain parts of this team, there's serious talent on other parts of this team.
- 55:26SPEAKER_05: It's just a freaking toss-up, man.
- 55:28SPEAKER_05: And I would not bet any money at all on Texas Tech, either way, right?
- 55:33SPEAKER_04: Right, right, right, right, right.
- 55:34SPEAKER_04: For sure, dude.
- 55:35SPEAKER_04: And uh, but I I do have to go over uh one because it makes it more fun looking forward towards the season.
- 55:40SPEAKER_04: Sure.
- 55:41SPEAKER_04: I mean, with bold bull is still the goal right now.
- 55:43SPEAKER_04: We're not we're not in the zone of talking about Big 12 championships yet, which I hope we will be under Joe McGuire.
- 55:49SPEAKER_04: And I actually do believe we will be eventually, yeah.
- 55:52SPEAKER_04: Um uh no, I I'm with you, man.
- 55:55SPEAKER_04: Like and it kind of comes back to you, you kind of finished your your your tangent on what I said as well.
- 56:00SPEAKER_04: That I think the coordinator upgrade, I think both are an upgrade.
- 56:05SPEAKER_04: I think Sonny Cumbee is a great co uh great offensive coordinator, and I think he's gonna create things as a head coach, but I think Zach Kitley is special.
- 56:13SPEAKER_04: I think that he he was sought after programs that are thought of as better than Texas Tech.
- 56:18SPEAKER_04: He could have taken those jobs, but he didn't.
- 56:20SPEAKER_04: You know, he'd be in the he could be in the SEC at like Auburn or something right now if he wanted to be, which Auburn is a better program than Texas Tech.
- 56:27SPEAKER_04: Um, so I think we're in great hands on that offensive offensive side of the ball.
- 56:32SPEAKER_04: And we just hired Oregon's defensive coordinator.
- 56:35SPEAKER_04: And it wasn't for a fault of his own that he was without a job, his head coach went to another.
- 56:41SPEAKER_04: So I think we're in we're we're taking the best defensive coordinator from the pack-12, or well, I I shouldn't say that, but like the uh defensive coordinator from the best programs in the pack 12, and you're grabbing the hottest offensive coordinator in the country, and those if Joe Maguire delegates them to making game time decisions, I think we're in great hands, and as he should as a head coach, he should have trust in the guys he hired to make those calls.
- 57:10SPEAKER_04: I'd rather him do it than them do it anyway.
- 57:12SPEAKER_04: So it's gonna be interesting to see Joe Maguire make his shift from Texas high school football head coaching to college football.
- 57:19SPEAKER_04: This is gonna be his first games as a head coach in college football.
- 57:22SPEAKER_04: Last time he was a head coach was in Texas high school football, so it's gonna be interesting to see how that chips, you know.
- 57:28SPEAKER_04: Like, can he make that adjustment to a higher state game?
- 57:32SPEAKER_04: So, and I have faith in doing so, and I think I think we can get the six ones.
- 57:37SPEAKER_05: I do too.
- 57:38SPEAKER_05: I have faith in Joey Maguire.
- 57:39SPEAKER_05: Now, do I think it's gonna all translate in the first year?
- 57:42SPEAKER_05: I don't really know.
- 57:44SPEAKER_05: So that's why that's that's why this one's this one's a tough one for me.
- 57:47SPEAKER_05: But like I said, man, there's talent on this team.
- 57:50SPEAKER_05: All three we have three starting caliber quarterbacks on this team.
- 57:53SPEAKER_05: Yeah, Tosh Brooks and Seradric Thompson are gonna be a dead league combo.
- 57:57SPEAKER_05: Uh the O-line needs work, but this is gonna be one of the best secondaries Texas Tech has had in years.
- 58:02SPEAKER_05: Yeah, really experienced uh defensive line, but the linebackers, we lost a lot from it.
- 58:07SPEAKER_05: So it's like positional holes, they're there, but there's also some really talented players on this team.
- 58:14SPEAKER_05: Uh, and like you said, with with your with your coordinators, I think we have a couple really good ones.
- 58:18SPEAKER_05: So um I I'm gonna I'm gonna hit the over right now on Texas Tech, and I'm probably gonna say we're gonna win eight or nine games by the time football season starts because that's how it because that's how it works.
- 58:29SPEAKER_05: But um, yeah, I mean, I if you're putting money on Texas Tech, you're a fool right now.
- 58:34SPEAKER_05: So either way, either or a genius, or a g I don't know, I don't know, but you go for it.
- 58:41SPEAKER_05: Either way, I don't blame you for choosing the over or the under here.
- 58:44SPEAKER_04: So uh we're gonna get way deeper in this as the summer months go on, yeah.
- 58:48SPEAKER_04: But this was a fun like preview into the previews, right?
- 58:51SPEAKER_04: So this this this was a good time, man.
- 58:53SPEAKER_04: I think I think I think we agreed for the most part.
- 58:55SPEAKER_04: So in disagree where it was fun, so yeah, no doubt.
- 58:58SPEAKER_05: So that's always fun talking football.
- 59:00SPEAKER_05: We still have, I think, a hundred plus days until football season, a few months, but uh it's okay.
- 59:05SPEAKER_05: It's okay.
- 59:06SPEAKER_05: We got some we got some good stuff coming with baseball, uh postseason coming up here shortly.
- 59:12SPEAKER_05: Uh, and then summer's right around the corner.
- 59:14SPEAKER_05: We got some bachelor parties, we got some weddings, we get big stuff going on, man.
- 59:17SPEAKER_04: So I mean now that you've said that, it might be a move to do a bachelor party podcast.
- 59:24SPEAKER_04: Maybe we got be a a live, uh you know, you and me in the same room sort of deal, like we used to.
- 59:30SPEAKER_05: So yeah, we could even get some uh some drunk guests on from our groups.
- 59:35SPEAKER_04: That's that's a move.
- 59:36SPEAKER_04: Let's let's think about doing it.
- 59:37SPEAKER_05: Yeah, for sure.
- 59:38SPEAKER_05: So bonus episode that may be coming to y'all, but uh, but yeah, man, this is a fun episode.
- 59:43SPEAKER_05: Uh we haven't we haven't recorded in a while, we haven't talked.
- 59:46SPEAKER_05: I know that this is kind of a low point in sports, just in general, um, for Texas Tech.
- 59:51SPEAKER_05: I mean, obviously great baseball going on right now, but not much of really anything.
- 59:55SPEAKER_05: I mean, there's you know, track and field and all that.
- 59:57SPEAKER_05: Pay attention to the smaller sports at Texas Tech.
- 1:00:00SPEAKER_05: We have some really good ones going on.
- 1:00:02SPEAKER_05: Um, but let's end it off here with the song of the week, and then we'll get out of here.
- 1:00:05SPEAKER_05: Tristan, what is your song of the week?
- 1:00:07SPEAKER_05: So, at the song of the week, I decided to go something upbeat, and I'm picking a red raider.
- 1:00:11SPEAKER_04: I'm picking a uh a red raider who's underappreciated in my opinion.
- 1:00:15SPEAKER_04: His name is William Clark Green.
- 1:00:17SPEAKER_04: Uh, he released his new album, and I really do like it.
- 1:00:19SPEAKER_04: I think he's got a lot of great ones.
- 1:00:21SPEAKER_04: It's a more introspective album than he usually has.
- 1:00:23SPEAKER_04: Uh, a lot of you know, looking looking inward on relationships and all that.
- 1:00:27SPEAKER_04: But the one the one I'm going with is an optimistic one.
- 1:00:30SPEAKER_04: It's called Feel Alive from Baker Hotel, William Clark Green.
- 1:00:49SPEAKER_04: And the reason why I'm going with that one as well is he's uh it's a co-write with Drew Kennedy, one of our boys.
- 1:00:54SPEAKER_05: So C and big Drew Kennedy guys, so yes, open road, fantastic song, cream and sugar, fantastic song, phenomenal song.
- 1:01:03SPEAKER_05: He's got he's got some he's got some really good jams.
- 1:01:05SPEAKER_05: Uh you have introduced me to Drew Kennedy, so I appreciate that.
- 1:01:08SPEAKER_05: Uh but my song of the week, there's been a lot of good music that just got released.
- 1:01:13SPEAKER_05: A lot of good music.
- 1:01:14SPEAKER_05: Um, I I'm not gonna go with this, but I really like Post Malone's new song, uh, Cooped Up, Roddy Rich, great jam.
- 1:01:21SPEAKER_05: He played it on SNL, it was fantastic.
- 1:01:23SPEAKER_05: Uh, but what I am gonna do, um, obviously gonna repeat here with Kendrick Lamar.
- 1:01:28SPEAKER_05: He just released another album.
- 1:01:29SPEAKER_05: He's a genius.
- 1:01:30SPEAKER_05: Uh, the album Mr.
- 1:01:32SPEAKER_05: Morale and the Big Steppers.
- 1:01:34SPEAKER_05: If you haven't heard it, go listen to it.
- 1:01:35SPEAKER_05: It's fantastic.
- 1:01:36SPEAKER_05: Um, but the song I'm gonna choose off of that album is Count Me Out because I counted out Texas Tech Baseball it this past weekend in Stillwater, and they proved me wrong.
- 1:01:46SPEAKER_05: So uh this is an I mean there's unlimited good songs on this album, but I'm gonna choose Count Me Out um by Kendrick Lamar.
- 1:01:54SPEAKER_07: Ain't nobody but the mirror looking for the falloff.
- 1:01:58SPEAKER_07: Hello when you call me up.
- 1:02:00SPEAKER_07: Hello when you count me up.
- 1:02:02SPEAKER_07: Hello when you count me up.
