- 0:00Hey, we're hanging out with Luke bryan Man. First of all, how
- 0:04do you find time to make a radio visit with everything you're doing right now?
- 0:07Well, I mean I think listen, it's uh. When you're putting
- 0:10new music out, and certainly music that you're really really excited about, you
- 0:14know you need to come. This is part of the part of the process.
- 0:19I mean, that's what it's interesting. When you move to Nashville and
- 0:25do all this. You just think you write a song and it goes.
- 0:27You don't realize you gotta you gotta run around and promote and talk about how
- 0:32awesome you are. And I love hearing myself brag about myself. So this
- 0:37is just a full This is my moment for fans that don't see that back
- 0:43end, right, Like, they know that you do the idle stuff,
- 0:45right, they know that, we get it, you do idle. But
- 0:48then you know what the fans don't realize is then you have to go film
- 0:53five days of commercials and you've got to go promote idle. So when you
- 0:57launch a big situation, you've got to run and and and feed feed the
- 1:06feed the system. Because that's just the way it ought to be. And
- 1:10that's what you do. It looks to a country music fan or an American
- 1:12idol fan, that looks glamorous, right, like, oh, he does
- 1:15these shows and sells out, and he's got these number one songs and he
- 1:19does idle. What are some of the like not so glamor and you obviously
- 1:23appreciate where you're at in life, And well, I would always non glamorous
- 1:26moments, I would say the most. No matter who the country music star,
- 1:34throughout the history of country music, at some point that star has had
- 1:44to get off their tour bus, walk across a muddy festival field and use
- 1:49a portal, lid or portagehn, no matter which one, all the all
- 1:55the female stars. And also that that's pretty non glamorous when you here,
- 2:00because well, tour buses are getting better, but ten years ago that was,
- 2:05you know, number two on a tour bus. You couldn't. It's
- 2:08a it's a no no. So just just understand that. However, glamorous
- 2:14one might be yeah, toting your own roll of toilet paper through a festival
- 2:20field. Two, Yeah, that's sharing a shower or not sharing a shower,
- 2:27but you know mobile showers, Yeah, so it it uh yeah,
- 2:34there's some but you know it's uh, it's a little more glamorous for me
- 2:38now. I mean, you know when I'm when I'm when i'm home,
- 2:43I'm having fun. Really every day. I mean when I'm home, I'm
- 2:46having fun. And when I got some shows booked, I'm having fun.
- 2:49And like coming in today, and I mean I'm really like I said I
- 2:52said earlier, I'm really excited about this song. So coming in and talking
- 2:55about new music is U is fun stuff and and this is it's a fun
- 3:00thing I get to do when it comes to the challenge of new music.
- 3:02Because you've had so many amazing songs and so many great albums and tours.
- 3:07What keeps you excited about a new song? Well, I think it's you
- 3:09know, when new songs come in, and when you write a new and
- 3:14that you really loved, that that's fun. I mean playing it for people,
- 3:17watching watching them react to the song, testing it out on people even
- 3:23like so I've got tea on my nephew who's twenty two, and I've got
- 3:29bow my bow's sixteen and takes thirteen. I mean, if I get a
- 3:34cool song that's a country song and I play it for them and they're like,
- 3:37Dad, we love that song. That's fun, and so playing something
- 3:44that you worked on and you yeah, that's what it's all about to me.
- 3:49So as long as I can go write songs now, I don't want
- 3:53to hold like I'm not holding myself up and writing one hundred songs a year
- 3:58like I did from you know, two thousand and five to twenty fifteen.
- 4:02I mean it was one hundred songs a year and and and you know,
- 4:09writing constantly. But now I'll get a great idea, a fun idea that
- 4:12I'm really confident in, and call up a call up some songwriter buddies,
- 4:16and we'll sit down and write it and we love how it turned out.
- 4:19So that that's that's fun. I when when you get an exciting song or
- 4:24someone pitches you an exciting song, it's good stuff. I can tell the
- 4:29excitement in your eyes and then your voice, the way you're talking about new
- 4:31music. Obviously, that's part of the reason you're here today with love you
- 4:34miss you mean It? Why Why did this feel right to not only record,
- 4:39but be like, hey, let's this is because picking a radio single
- 4:43there's more of a science behind it now, right versus I like it go
- 4:46right, I mean, yeah, the the yeah, you're right. I
- 4:50mean when you when you go to radio and you you pick your single,
- 4:55it's it's a it's a there's a lot of things in play and a lot
- 5:00of places to go and do and see and all that. But I mean,
- 5:02this song is just one of those songs where you hear it and you're
- 5:04like, man, that title, why has that title not been written?
- 5:09And the story around it and it you know, from people that I've talked
- 5:13to, it kind of feels like people are like, it's kind of vintage.
- 5:17It's kind of throwback stuff that you used to do. And I think
- 5:21it's challenging where I'm at in my career to try to moodle. I've talked
- 5:27about so many sub but I kind of get just being kind of the party
- 5:31guy. I get my all of my dad. I mean, it hadn't
- 5:36been all raging party songs either. It's been so as I as I go
- 5:42to try to pick the next single, how do I pick one that's kind
- 5:46of different than you know, fifteen years of all this other music, So
- 5:50it gets a little more challenging. And even sitting down to write a song,
- 5:57if I'm like, gosh, I've already already kind of did that with
- 6:00this song. Or you know, I've already had a song about farming,
- 6:04or I had a song about the honky Tonk and all this. So so
- 6:09you just have to get a little more creative and and and push yourself and
- 6:13and hopefully when you get the right one, it's uh, it starts the
- 6:16right process. I mean, I asked for the small donation after you leave,
- 6:19because we just had a label in the middle of the interview. Yeah,
- 6:25it's fine, it's fine, it's the electricity. My truck didn't start
- 6:28yesterday, so oh no, what is okay? What does Luke Brian do
- 6:31when this truck doesn't start? Thankfully? Well, thankfully. We were at
- 6:36my bass lake down in uh down in Murray County, and I got a
- 6:43buddy that kind of helps us on the farm and he was checking his cows
- 6:46and I called Trevor and I said, hey, my truck didn't start,
- 6:50and he was right there. So we it was an electrical deal, but
- 6:54we got it jumped off and and uh wasn't the battery or anything. It
- 6:58was just a little something were going on. So I got to send it
- 7:00to the send it to the shop. So the new song is an iHeart
- 7:04country new music spotlight. It's going to be played all over the country.
- 7:08How do you I'm sure early in your career it's like, hey, I'm
- 7:11on the radio, turn this up. You've had so many number ones,
- 7:14You've done this for so long. Now, how do you react when you're
- 7:18driving in your song? Well, historically, if a lot of times,
- 7:23I don't you know, you're you're on the phone a lot driving down the
- 7:26road. If I look on the screen and see one of my songs,
- 7:30I always I talked me back. Well, you know, I always turn
- 7:34it and listen. I never I never take that for granted. I always
- 7:38listen and it never gets old, and it always feels great. And you
- 7:44know, I mean, there was a time in my life where you know,
- 7:47my current single was getting played, and then the last two singles were
- 7:53and it was just like, you know, when you turn on the radio,
- 7:55now you're hearing Morgan and Luke Comb's. And there was a time where
- 8:00literally every time I turn on the radio, it was me and Jason Aldan
- 8:01and it was just like I So I appreciate and like really relish that time
- 8:09in my life. But now any songs that get played are kind of back
- 8:13catalog stuff, and so when I when I have stuff getting played out there,
- 8:18it's very I mean, it's it's fun and humbling and and I'm always
- 8:24gonna like when I hear love you miss you mean it, like, I'll
- 8:26really study it because I want to hear how it sounds on the radio and
- 8:31nothing. When you hear stuff on the radio, it just always it always
- 8:35brings a smile and makes you feel good, and it always has a little
- 8:37more uh, a little more pop to it. You get to enjoy this
- 8:41moment, this brand new song comes Friday. Do you have to think past
- 8:45that? Are you at a point where you're like, no, we're just
- 8:46gonna enjoy that. And then well, I mean I'm always thinking about I'm
- 8:54almost thinking about like where to go with what I want to do, and
- 8:58and how to navigate the changes in how music is done and navigate the changes
- 9:05of kind of you know, morphing into Like I mean, I'm kind of
- 9:13the older guy on the block now when I see younger acts coming out,
- 9:16But that doesn't mean I think that has a real uh kind of charming role
- 9:22too. The fact that I can walk into a room and I'm like,
- 9:28been there, done there, seeing it all, you're you're you know,
- 9:31I've kind of been around the block and I get it and I can just
- 9:33be comfortable in that space. If so. Yeah, it's pretty it's pretty
- 9:43fun. Like nothing, nothing overwhelms me like it used to. And uh,
- 9:48I think that planning my life where I can do concerts and shows and
- 9:54then uh like this year we put some baseball stadiums on the on the tour
- 10:01just because I did stadiums for three or four years and loved it. And
- 10:09when I quit doing when I quit kind of just doing amphitheaters and stuff.
- 10:15Well, what's interesting is the year that I had the most stadiums book,
- 10:18I had Morgan opening up for me, and then COVID came and so I
- 10:22was like, oh my god, this thing was about to be You're like,
- 10:26hey, you on me? Well we you know, we he and
- 10:28I get together and we play golf and joke about it. But but so
- 10:35yeah, I mean I look at twenty twenty, I was like, god,
- 10:37I mean I could have I mean, it was going to be a
- 10:41crazy year of stadiums and probably missed out on a little bit of money along
- 10:46the way. But but the but that really doesn't matter. I mean,
- 10:50the main thing for me is is just do plan things that really are worth
- 10:58my mental time. I mean when I when I when I plan a little
- 11:03business endeavor, when I do music or whatever it it, it takes up
- 11:09a lot of room in my brain to think it out. And you always
- 11:13say you can hire some people to do stuff for you and make stuff,
- 11:16make stuff happen, but you really, at the end of the day have
- 11:20to be engaged in it too and concentrating on it or it's not gonna work.
- 11:24The last thing I want to ask before we have you run here is
- 11:26and I just thought of it because you're like, I've been around the block,
- 11:31you know, I'm comfortable. So let's say, when when you years
- 11:35from now, decide like, you know what, I'm just gonna stand back
- 11:39and enjoy and let the music, you know, continue to live for itself.
- 11:43What are moments that you're gonna be like, I'm proud of that.
- 11:45I'm proud of that. I'm proud of that, I would say, I'm
- 11:50I'm really proud of like when Country Girls Check It from Me came out and
- 11:58I did it on the CMT Awards, and then I do on the CMA
- 12:00Awards, and that really felt like the kind of transitioning into like a superstar
- 12:07kind of country music artist. That's when that happened. I'm really proud of
- 12:11how I'm proud of how I fought through the early years and had some successes
- 12:16and failures. But then I'm proud of that moment. And then like when
- 12:22you look at I did the anthem at the Super Bowl, that was a
- 12:26huge challenge for me. I had messed up an anthem before kind of so
- 12:33you know those years of when I'm at home on Sundays watching football with the
- 12:39boys and you know, the Steelers are playing and the boys go, Dad,
- 12:45did you ever play that one? I'm like, yeah, I sold
- 12:46that one out in ten minutes, and they look at me like they almost
- 12:52look at me like I'm jacking with them, you know, messing with them.
- 12:56And so the fact that I did all that, and then when I
- 13:00look at like the body of work on American Idol, I think everybody looks
- 13:03at that show and they really really feel like, at the end of the
- 13:07day, we're pretty good people on there. We're trying to really help people.
- 13:11I mean, I think just proud of that and proud that I'm proud
- 13:18that I've really navigated all this and at the core of me, I'm really
- 13:22happy. You know, I'm not like, I'm not some I'm not a
- 13:28dark It's not a dark energy that I go retreat and you know, go
- 13:33sit in a cabin somewhere and drink whiskey all day and you know a bit
- 13:39about being sad. I mean, if I'm out, I'm having fun fishing
- 13:43and playing in the next hunting trip and playing the golf trip and trying to
- 13:48take my boys with me or my buddies or playing playing some fun stuff.
- 13:52So I kind of get after it every day and the fully I'll drink a
- 13:58little less and eat a little bit. There's plenty of time for that.
- 14:01There's plenty of time for that. Lukes, thanks for hanging out to the
- 14:05man. Yeah, good to be here. Thank you.
