- 0:08got one shot at this. It's on us to live life to the fullest to
- 0:13maximize what we've been given and play the game of life at our
- 0:16full potential.
- 0:18John Mitchell: Are you living up to your potential? Are you
- 0:20frustrated that despite your best intentions, you just can't
- 0:24seem to make the changes needed to take things to the next
- 0:27level. So you can impact your career relationships and health.
- 0:32Kelly Hatfield: If this is hitting home, you're in the
- 0:34right place. Our mission is to open the door to the exceptional
- 0:38life by showing you how to play the game of life at a higher
- 0:41level. So you're playing at your full potential, rather than at a
- 0:45fraction as most people do. We'll share the one thing that
- 0:49once we learned it, our lives were transformed. And once you
- 0:53learn it, watch what happens. Welcome to think it'd be the
- 1:01podcast. I'm Kelly Hatfield.
- 1:03John Mitchell: Hey. And I'm John Michell. Today,
- 1:05Kelly Hatfield: we are going to dive into the topic of stories
- 1:10that we tell ourselves and how that informs how we kind of move
- 1:14through the world. So what do you think, John?
- 1:17John Mitchell: I love it. Love it. I think it's so true. Those
- 1:21stories that we unconsciously tell ourselves that are from
- 1:27decades old, darn sure impact our behaviors.
- 1:31Kelly Hatfield: Yeah, absolutely. And it's
- 1:32interesting, you know, so let's talk a little bit about that.
- 1:35Because the story is, your story is your story. Right? So let's
- 1:40do a little bit of clarification here. Your story is your story,
- 1:43the events of your life happened, they've unfolded, how
- 1:46they've unfolded. But then there's the narrative, which is
- 1:51the story that you're telling about your story? Right? Yeah.
- 1:56And so that's kind of what, what we're talking about is how you
- 2:00choose to interpret the events of your life. And how that
- 2:05informs like your subconscious, and the actions that you're
- 2:09taking today, based on kind of that narrative that you have
- 2:13around your story.
- 2:15John Mitchell: Right, right. You know, it's I think this is a
- 2:18great topic, because I see that, that, yes, things have happened
- 2:25in your life, and you gotta define just actually what
- 2:29happened, not, uh, not giving meaning to it, just what
- 2:34actually happened. And, you know, I was working with a
- 2:38client last week that was talking about the mistakes that
- 2:44he had made in his life, you know? And I'm like, why were
- 2:49they mistakes? You, you, you did what you thought was best at the
- 2:53time based on all the information you you had, but he
- 2:57perceives that he made mistakes. And I suspect you're like I am,
- 3:03where I'm like, you know, I've never really made a mistake, as
- 3:07is, you know, I did what I thought was best. And now I can
- 3:10look back and realize that that was not maybe the best course of
- 3:14action. But it doesn't really feel like a mistake. Now. I'm
- 3:18more experienced not to not to do the same thing. But what do
- 3:22you think about that?
- 3:23Kelly Hatfield: Yeah, absolutely. I think it's goes
- 3:25back to that framing, right? It's this idea of is life
- 3:28happening to you? Or is life happening for you? Because the
- 3:34one put is in that victim space, like all of these bad things
- 3:37have happened for me, to me, therefore, I life has been
- 3:41really hard for me, or it's hard for me to overcome this or why
- 3:44me? And then there's the other mindset, that is like, okay, all
- 3:50of these things have happened. What am I supposed to have
- 3:54learned? What was I supposed to have learned as a result of
- 3:56going through that? You know, you know, so it's, it's just
- 4:00again, what is the narrative? You're telling about your story?
- 4:05You know, so there's been many times, you know, where things
- 4:09haven't been going well, in business, I think I've talked
- 4:12about like, the first two years of being in business for me, my
- 4:17first two years back in Oh, wait, and no, oh, nine, we're in
- 4:21the depths of a recession. And my first business had to do with
- 4:24hiring, you know, and so it literally was, okay. You know,
- 4:32questioning yourself. You know, am I doing the right thing,
- 4:36there were lots of tears, right? You know, and it's like, no,
- 4:42okay, this path. If I if I can make it through this, I can make
- 4:46it through anything. You know, and like, these different things
- 4:50that I've gone through in the past have prepared me for this.
- 4:53You know, like you're okay, you can make it through everything.
- 4:56Anything. You've done this, but you've done hard stuff before.
- 5:00For and needed out the other side. And that was kind of the
- 5:04story I was telling myself versus it would have been really
- 5:08easy to go well, you know, timing was terrible, you know,
- 5:13I, this stuff always happens, you know, and to thrown up my
- 5:17hands and and, and given up and give it and used it as an excuse
- 5:22to not move forward. But it was like, No, I've done hard stuff
- 5:25before. All right, it's not going to be the picture of what
- 5:28I wanted it to be. I'm gonna have to pivot and do some stuff,
- 5:32some offer some services I didn't want to offer, but I need
- 5:36to make any money. So it was, you know, I think the different
- 5:41framing can either put you into solution mode, or it can put you
- 5:45into that victim and kind of feeling paralyzed mode.
- 5:49John Mitchell: Right. You know, let's think about this idea. The
- 5:51story should tell her yourself. You know, I think most of the
- 5:56stories are, are not verbalized, to other people, at least not
- 6:04verbalized very often. Do you think that's true?
- 6:08Kelly Hatfield: Um, I think that's true. I think a lot of
- 6:13what's happening is happening in our internal dialogue. Yeah,
- 6:17subconsciously, under the, you know, like, like, we've talked
- 6:20about where it's kind of running behind the scenes. Yeah. So
- 6:26yeah, I mean, some people are better at it than others, you
- 6:29know, about sharing their stories. And, but I think a lot
- 6:33of exactly what you're saying a lot of those stories happen
- 6:35internally,
- 6:36John Mitchell: you know, I, this idea of this internal dialogue,
- 6:41I completely agree with you, but I see how fundamentally weak,
- 6:48the, the internal dialogue that we have with ourselves is
- 6:52because it's very fluid. It's not, you're not necessarily
- 6:59saying to yourself specific words, it's just sort of a
- 7:02feeling semi feelings, semi words, dialogue, and it is so
- 7:10easy to fix that, you know, through through our methodology.
- 7:14When when you say, Okay, wait a minute, I'm fixing the stories
- 7:20that I'm telling myself, because I'm now in my visualization, you
- 7:25can articulate precisely with words, what happened? What was
- 7:30the takeaway from it? What did I learn? And I'm gonna articulate
- 7:34those words to myself every day to now change how I am,
- 7:40subconsciously, as well as emotionally. Does that make
- 7:43sense?
- 7:44Kelly Hatfield: Yep, absolutely. And I think one other technique
- 7:47in terms of that, so the visualization a number one,
- 7:51that's a great way to do exactly, reprogram that
- 7:55subconscious. The other thing that I find very useful, is if
- 7:59part of the thinking time, and we've talked about this in
- 8:02earlier episodes, where I will literally like so if I feel like
- 8:06I am in a place of worry, that's one of my behaviors, one a
- 8:13behavior that I have in my visualization, but one of the
- 8:16techniques that I use is inside my thinking time. I'm like,
- 8:19Okay, what is the so whatever the challenge is, what is the
- 8:23story? I'm telling myself about this? Okay, write that down.
- 8:28What's, what are the facts? Yeah, now, let's go over what
- 8:31the facts are, you know, and then is that true? You know, is
- 8:36it absolutely true? You know, so like, I'll go through an
- 8:39exercise in that thinking time, that helps me completely reframe
- 8:43it, where I'm like, Okay, I'm breaking that bad, you know, or
- 8:47I won't label it bad, good or otherwise, but I'm breaking that
- 8:50behavior that doesn't serve me by being very intentional about
- 8:55how I'm going to process this. Does that make sense?
- 9:00John Mitchell: Absolutely. You know, Kelly, I'm really glad you
- 9:03brought that that up. And and for the audience that doesn't
- 9:06know exactly what she's talking about, you know, we have a
- 9:09technique of setting aside time two times a week to just think,
- 9:15to what we call deep think and, and, you know, think about this,
- 9:19this is something I've thought about lately a lot about our
- 9:23methodology is, is the thinking is goes hand in hand with the
- 9:31visualization where you're feeding the succinct
- 9:33articulation of your life. Well, the thinking is where you do you
- 9:39look at those stories, you shape those stories, you reframe those
- 9:43stories, you give new meaning to the stories. And so that's sort
- 9:48of the guiding part of your life and then when you think it
- 9:53through, then you put it on your visualization to impact your
- 9:57subconscious mind and your daily action. And so the combination
- 10:01of those two together is what makes our methodology so
- 10:06powerful, don't you think?
- 10:08Kelly Hatfield: Oh, 100%, you know, so I would want an action
- 10:12item for those that are tuned in and listening right now is start
- 10:16to identify, you know, what are some of those stories that
- 10:20you're telling yourself that are holding you back? You know, and
- 10:24you can look at some of the different areas in your life to
- 10:26see where maybe you're, you've been stuck, or aren't making
- 10:29progress, that might be the first place to start? And just
- 10:32ask yourself, like, Okay, what's the what is the narrative? For
- 10:36you around? You know, why this hasn't progressed? Or, you know,
- 10:40that's a really great way to kind of get started with
- 10:43thinking about, you know, what are some of those obstacles? Or
- 10:48things you're having a challenge moving, past or achieving? Or?
- 10:52Because a lot of the time it has to do with that subconscious?
- 10:57You know, again, 95% of our thoughts are at the subconscious
- 11:01level, and they're comprised of those stories. So what's your
- 11:06narrative? You know, is your narrative going to serve your
- 11:09subconscious? Or is it going to do the opposite? You know, so
- 11:14for me, I look at all of the experiences that I've had, you
- 11:18know, so we'll speak specifically about, like, some
- 11:21of the things that haven't gone well, or challenges I've had to
- 11:25overcome, or maybe some horrible things that I've experienced,
- 11:29I'm I wouldn't change, as as terrible as a couple of them
- 11:33were, I wouldn't change anything, because they're part
- 11:37of this path. They're part of what made me I've learned so
- 11:41much, and become a better human being as a result of those
- 11:45experiences, and have been able to serve at a different level at
- 11:50because I've had those experiences. And so again,
- 11:54that's how I've chosen to frame that rather than that being in
- 11:58that place where, you know, that victim hood has such a negative
- 12:03connotation, and but it's easy to go there, because that's what
- 12:06we're designed to do, you know, what I mean, we talked about
- 12:08human fallacies, you know, the other day, in a previous
- 12:12episode, and that's what you're designed to do is to, you know,
- 12:16go to the negative So, right, again, just how you frame your,
- 12:20your narrative.
- 12:21John Mitchell: Yeah, I, you know, I, I think, you know,
- 12:24based on our methodology, the way you you do life is is to
- 12:30have the exceptional life is yes, you start by thinking two
- 12:34times a week, and, and thinking through your life and figuring
- 12:38out your life and discovering whatever the challenges are, and
- 12:42thinking through it. Any problem in your life is ultimately
- 12:46solved, either from thinking through it, or getting the
- 12:49outset side input of somebody else. So that thinking time two
- 12:54times week is step one. And then step two, is now we got to turn
- 12:59that thinking into being showing up with a proper actions
- 13:04happening automatically. And that's where having the succinct
- 13:08articulation of your life and feeding it to yourself 12
- 13:12minutes a day, boom, that, in fact, that affects your your
- 13:17daily actions and your mindset, and gives you this immense sense
- 13:21of control over your life. But the two are so intertwined
- 13:25together, that together, they're powerful.
- 13:28Kelly Hatfield: Well, it's funny, John, I remember when we
- 13:30first met years ago, and part of the process of building your
- 13:35visualization is filling out this questionnaire. And this
- 13:41goes to the point of thinking time, and those two things going
- 13:44hand in hand, because I hadn't sat down, and like really
- 13:49thought deeply about anything. I was running as fast as I could
- 13:54and had been for years, you know, and just really, in that
- 13:58kind of reactive mode, and, yeah, there was planning, there
- 14:02was a business plan, you know, that had dust on it, you know, I
- 14:05hadn't looked at developed it, you know, but in terms of
- 14:09thinking deeply about my life, and my business, and some of the
- 14:15it was a hard practice, and I remember so much of what I did
- 14:18was at the surface, you know, and then you're like, nope, try
- 14:22again. Right? And then going deeper and deeper. My point
- 14:28being, this can be a challenge at first because you're if you
- 14:34aren't doing this and setting aside time to think regularly,
- 14:39and to think deeply and to just be with yourself and Write your
- 14:43thoughts down and this can feel intimidating. It can. What's the
- 14:49word I'm looking for? And you can feel inadequate, you can
- 14:55because you're just it's something you have to train
- 14:58yourself to do is my point. And so for those of you that are
- 15:01like, Well, geez, what do I even think about when I, you know, or
- 15:05what do I write down during this thinking time? You know, we have
- 15:09a whole video on this, right? We can put the link to the, to the
- 15:16thinking time video for people to watch and learn more about
- 15:20how to do this because it is an art. And it does take some
- 15:23practice.
- 15:24John Mitchell: Right, right. Yeah, it's a it's a simple
- 15:27process. I mean, but But yes, in fact, if you if you want it,
- 15:32send an email to John at think it'd be a.com. And, and I'll
- 15:36give it to you. And you know, one other thing that's
- 15:39interesting, that's, that's sort of related to this. I have seen
- 15:45and this This changed in my visualization. Maybe a year ago,
- 15:50where I saw the and I got this from Jordan Peterson said that
- 15:57there's power in being what he calls an articulate creature.
- 16:02And so I now explain, think it be it to people that come to me
- 16:09very succinctly and clearly. And I've, and I've written that out,
- 16:15what do I do? When somebody says, What do you do? I have
- 16:19what what I tell them? I do, and I have seen the power from
- 16:25feeding that to myself each day. That now, I mean, when somebody
- 16:31asked me, boy, I am right on point I can I can drive it home,
- 16:37from their perspective of not knowing anything, about 20 times
- 16:42more effective than I could three years ago, because I just,
- 16:47you know, train my subconscious mind to know exactly what to
- 16:51say, relative to the viewpoint of the listener. And that's been
- 16:58a powerful lesson. But to ramp this up, again, is this idea of
- 17:05the stories we tell ourselves, drive our behaviors, there's a
- 17:09way for you to change your interpretation of the stories.
- 17:14And from that, through the methodology we have, you can
- 17:18change behaviors and those change behaviors can recreate
- 17:23your life. So, with that as a summary, until next time, we'll
- 17:28see ya.
- 17:32Kelly Hatfield: Thanks for listening today. If you've had
- 17:35your own aha moment from today's episode, send me or John an
- 17:40email. We'd love to share your epiphany with our audience. So
- 17:45email us at Kelly@thinkitbeit.com or
