- 0:00Speaker 1: Jeff Mosher from the Inside the Birds podcast and Philly
- 0:03Speaker 1: Voices here today for today's football at four. We'll get
- 0:06Speaker 1: to him in just a second. Game day hits different.
- 0:09Speaker 1: A lot happening. You got a big Monday night football
- 0:11Speaker 1: game tonight. You got game two of the NLCS. And,
- 0:15Speaker 1: of course, the Eagles loss on Sunday. Everybody still kind
- 0:18Speaker 1: of looking back at what happened. We just heard from
- 0:21Speaker 1: Nick Sirianni.
- 0:22Speaker 2: Jeff Mosher, did anything stand out about what Nick said?
- 0:25Speaker 1: He did take accountability for his decision yesterday. Today he
- 0:30Speaker 1: took that same accountability. He did seem to think that
- 0:34Speaker 1: the last possession, that he was okay giving them time
- 0:38Speaker 1: left on the clock. One of the reasons was he said,
- 0:40Speaker 1: we couldn't run the ball yesterday, so I didn't even
- 0:43Speaker 1: want to call a run. I think that was a
- 0:44Speaker 1: pretty large indictment to hear about that final drive yesterday.
- 0:48Speaker 1: But to me, I'm actually a little bit more angry
- 0:53Speaker 1: if I'm a fan at the last possession than I
- 0:56Speaker 1: am in the decision to kick it.
- 0:59Speaker 3: It's funny because that's been going back and forth in
- 1:02Speaker 3: my own head, Mike, since the end of the game.
- 1:06Speaker 3: Some people bring up the whole Dallas-Baltimore game where you
- 1:12Speaker 3: can get burned if you make the wrong decision or
- 1:15Speaker 3: the opposite decision that Nick made. I do think that
- 1:21Speaker 3: given the way the Eagles defense was playing, given how
- 1:24Speaker 3: much Jacksonville is struggling offensively, I think they had no
- 1:26Speaker 3: timeouts before the kickoff as well.
- 1:28Speaker 4: So the, and.
- 1:29Speaker 3: Trevor Lawrence does not have, he has a nice arm,
- 1:31Speaker 3: but he does not have Lamar Jackson's arm.
- 1:33Speaker 4: He's like got an okay.
- 1:35Speaker 3: And if arm, I just think the degree of difficulty
- 1:38Speaker 3: for them to get into a field goal spot, um,
- 1:42Speaker 3: is going to be really, really difficult there if you
- 1:44Speaker 3: kick short and make a tackle, right?
- 1:46Speaker 1: You've got to get to– now the ball goes to
- 1:48Speaker 1: the 35-yard line.
- 1:50Speaker 2: You've got to get to what? You've got to get
- 1:52Speaker 2: to the 48.
- 1:54Speaker 1: You've got to get to the opposite 48 to try
- 1:56Speaker 1: a 70-yarder. So you only need 13 yards. You need
- 1:59Speaker 1: a 13-yard pass to get out of bounds. And you
- 2:02Speaker 1: can do that in a player two. The Eagles did it.
- 2:05Speaker 1: I mean, I said the example is the Eagles threw
- 2:07Speaker 1: a seven-yard pass to Makai Lemon. That play took four seconds. Right.
- 2:11Speaker 1: You got seven yards on that play in four seconds.
- 2:14Speaker 1: You can essentially get another six yards or so. But
- 2:18Speaker 1: now you're really getting close. I agree that it is
- 2:21Speaker 1: a very small window, but it is doable to get
- 2:25Speaker 1: 13 yards to try a 70 yarder. And they have
- 2:28Speaker 1: the one kicker in the league who has made a
- 2:30Speaker 1: 70 yarder. So that's where I think that enters the
- 2:34Speaker 1: conversation or at least the thought process if you're Philadelphia, correct?
- 2:38Speaker 2: Correct.
- 2:38Speaker 3: So I could almost give him more of a pass
- 2:41Speaker 3: on that than the clock management to even leave time
- 2:46Speaker 3: on the clock. But I will say, I said this
- 2:48Speaker 3: to Adam in the postgame show even before Nick said
- 2:50Speaker 3: it today, there was something very odd to me about
- 2:55Speaker 3: when Tyler Steen left and Fred Johnson came in. I
- 2:59Speaker 3: know you're down to an offensive line you never thought
- 3:02Speaker 3: you'd have, but that's a lot of massive man of
- 3:05Speaker 3: humanity right side there with Bell and Fred Johnson. And
- 3:09Speaker 3: for whatever reason, and maybe it has to do with
- 3:12Speaker 3: pad leverage for Fred at guard, I don't know. But
- 3:15Speaker 3: they did not want to run behind that right side.
- 3:19Speaker 3: in the second half once Fred came in, which surprised me.
- 3:22Speaker 3: I thought, if anything, just those guys being such big
- 3:25Speaker 3: dudes would have opened up some lanes.
- 3:28Speaker 4: But that could also very well be me, Mike, overthinking it.
- 3:33Speaker 3: Marco Bell's playing okay, but he actually doesn't, for a
- 3:37Speaker 3: guy that big, does not have great play strength yet.
- 3:40Speaker 3: He's not moving people the way you would think someone
- 3:43Speaker 3: that big can go. I've been impressed by Not as
- 3:47Speaker 3: many penalties.
- 3:48Speaker 4: You're not seeing a holding.
- 3:49Speaker 3: You're not seeing getting beat really badly in pass pro
- 3:53Speaker 3: all the time.
- 3:54Speaker 4: But he's also not moving people.
- 3:56Speaker 3: So I understand what Nick is saying, that they did
- 4:01Speaker 3: not want to run the ball.
- 4:03Speaker 4: But sometimes and you know what, to be honest with you.
- 4:07Speaker 3: If you look at the play where he was considering,
- 4:09Speaker 3: instead of kneeling down, he did run, like they got
- 4:12Speaker 3: a minus three on it. So there are some plays
- 4:15Speaker 3: there to validate what.
- 4:16Speaker 4: Nick is saying.
- 4:19Speaker 2: I don't disagree with that.
- 4:20Speaker 1: Okay, so I can't say I'm going to hand the
- 4:22Speaker 1: ball off to try to run behind Milata.
- 4:25Speaker 2: All right, I got Jordan Milata over there. He's 6'7,
- 4:27Speaker 2: 330 pounds. Jordan, can you help me get one yard?
- 4:31Speaker 1: Can I push behind you for one? How about a
- 4:33Speaker 1: tush push? Can I just say to my quarterback, hey,
- 4:36Speaker 1: fall forward for a yard? You know, the play last
- 4:39Speaker 1: night that I'm watching that really changes the game in
- 4:42Speaker 1: the Baltimore-Atlanta game is Snoop Huntley basically goes, stands up,
- 4:47Speaker 1: and follows the center and just kept pushing the center forward.
- 4:50Speaker 1: And it's like he got 15 yards on that play.
- 4:53Speaker 2: Just amazing. Fall forward for a yard. I'm not asking
- 4:56Speaker 2: you to get 10 yards on the play.
- 4:58Speaker 4: Mike, the average less than two yards a run. I'm
- 5:00Speaker 4: not sure they could have done it.
- 5:01Speaker 1: I mean, I think what all I had 18 carries
- 5:04Speaker 1: for 22 yards yesterday.
- 5:06Speaker 2: That was very inept.
- 5:08Speaker 4: I don't want to take it. I don't want to
- 5:09Speaker 4: absolve anybody of anything. I'm not trying to do this.
- 5:12Speaker 4: Trust me.
- 5:12Speaker 3: But the whole way the game ended really absolves the
- 5:17Speaker 3: fact that the Eagles offense gave them no shot to
- 5:20Speaker 3: really even be in it other than one big play.
- 5:24Speaker 4: To Darius Cooper.
- 5:28Speaker 3: If you're expecting everything to go right in the final
- 5:30Speaker 3: minute when everything has gone wrong for most of the day,
- 5:35Speaker 3: more so offensively, that's tough.
- 5:38Speaker 4: The team gets.
- 5:41Speaker 3: Put in this position of having to finish off what
- 5:45Speaker 3: it started even though what it started was.
- 5:48Speaker 4: Broken from the beginning.
- 5:50Speaker 3: It was never pretty against the Rams and it wasn't
- 5:52Speaker 3: pretty there against the Jags either.
- 5:54Speaker 1: Well, the only reason they're in the position they're in
- 5:56Speaker 1: is not because you played so well. It's because they
- 5:59Speaker 1: played so poorly and kept you in the game. Now,
- 6:01Speaker 1: you took advantage of them playing poorly to take.
- 6:03Speaker 2: The lead in these games.
- 6:05Speaker 4: Right.
- 6:05Speaker 2: So I don't know if I'm supposed to.
- 6:07Speaker 1: Be encouraged or discouraged that I hung in these games,
- 6:10Speaker 1: shorthanded against two Super Bowl contenders, that I really feel
- 6:15Speaker 1: that I should have won those games. Now, I saw
- 6:17Speaker 1: your article. Like, don't tell me I'm two plays from
- 6:19Speaker 1: being 4-0 because you're not. But I don't know if
- 6:23Speaker 1: I'm supposed to be encouraged by the fact that, hey,
- 6:25Speaker 1: I'm so shorthanded, and I basically went toe-to-toe with these
- 6:28Speaker 1: two teams, and it needed my coach to get in
- 6:30Speaker 1: the way for me to lose. But on the flip side,
- 6:33Speaker 1: can I say my coach helped me stay in those games?
- 6:36Speaker 1: I don't know what to think about that.
- 6:38Speaker 3: Well, I think the reality of the situation is, the
- 6:42Speaker 3: last two weeks especially, your defense gave you it. It
- 6:46Speaker 3: created two turnovers against the Rams, gave you some short fields.
- 6:49Speaker 3: You were able to punch some scoring in. And then
- 6:51Speaker 3: your defense and your crowd, your home crowd in London
- 6:55Speaker 3: there really made things very, very difficult for the Jags offense.
- 6:59Speaker 3: And if you got like 40 percent of the same
- 7:03Speaker 3: production from your offense as you were getting from your defense,
- 7:06Speaker 3: you could legitimately say, all right. I like where this
- 7:09Speaker 3: is going, even if we lost the game, you know,
- 7:11Speaker 3: but you're not, I mean, if you had 40% of
- 7:14Speaker 3: what the defense was giving you on offense, you would
- 7:16Speaker 3: have won these games and you would be a totally
- 7:19Speaker 3: different record, but you're not, and you cannot ignore what
- 7:22Speaker 3: the offensive stats are. And that's why it's really difficult
- 7:26Speaker 3: to be encouraged by anything right now. Other than the
- 7:29Speaker 3: fact that you have a very good defense that'll help
- 7:31Speaker 3: you keep you in games, but they'll have their moments
- 7:34Speaker 3: like Chicago. They'll have other moments, but again, in the
- 7:37Speaker 3: fourth quarter where they're just been asked to do too
- 7:39Speaker 3: much and they will not be able to hold onto that.
- 7:42Speaker 3: You can't, I think the Eagles run the fifth or
- 7:45Speaker 3: sixth fewest plays in the NFL.
- 7:47Speaker 4: I'm actually surprised it's that high.
- 7:48Speaker 3: I thought it'd be the least amount, but maybe by
- 7:51Speaker 3: three weeks from now it will be, but they're just,
- 7:53Speaker 3: the defense can't be asked to be perfect in the
- 7:56Speaker 3: fourth quarter.
- 7:57Speaker 4: Every time when the offense gives nothing.
- 8:00Speaker 2: No question.
- 8:00Speaker 1: Jeff Mosher football at four from the inside, the birds podcast,
- 8:04Speaker 1: Philly voice.com. You know, I guess the one thing would
- 8:08Speaker 1: be to ask if I start to get healthier and
- 8:10Speaker 1: I have Barkley back and Smith back, do I feel
- 8:14Speaker 1: that my defense has gotten to a point that I
- 8:16Speaker 1: can compete now with my full offense?
- 8:21Speaker 4: Um, with your full offense.
- 8:24Speaker 3: I mean, again, when they, when they are full offensively,
- 8:26Speaker 3: they still go back to some of the issues that
- 8:28Speaker 3: we had in the run. They haven't run the ball
- 8:29Speaker 3: well since week one of last year.
- 8:32Speaker 2: Right.
- 8:32Speaker 3: So we have a really long, uh, or a big
- 8:36Speaker 3: sample size here to question how good this offense is
- 8:39Speaker 3: really going to be even when Devontae Smith and Saquon Barkley.
- 8:42Speaker 4: Get back because it has to run.
- 8:44Speaker 3: But to your question, if the offense starts to figure
- 8:47Speaker 3: things out and get healthier, then.
- 8:50Speaker 4: Yeah, I think that you can feel good.
- 8:52Speaker 3: About the Eagles can win the NFC East, but I
- 8:55Speaker 3: think you really have to squint. That was part of
- 8:58Speaker 3: the article I wrote today. You really got to squint
- 9:01Speaker 3: at this point to even see healthier eagles team hoisting
- 9:05Speaker 3: that lombardi at the end of the year just based
- 9:08Speaker 3: on the fact that they're nine and eight over their
- 9:10Speaker 3: last 17 games mike right i mean this is this.
- 9:13Speaker 1: Is taking two and two in 2024 when they were
- 9:16Speaker 1: two and two in 2024 it didn't feel that they
- 9:18Speaker 1: were this far off.
- 9:20Speaker 3: No they didn't have when they were two and two
- 9:21Speaker 3: they were playing poorly that they had it's not a
- 9:24Speaker 3: great offensive line they had Saquon was on his way
- 9:28Speaker 3: to a historic run. I mean, it was really just
- 9:30Speaker 3: the pass offense that had to come together. And then
- 9:32Speaker 3: even the defense, you know, they hadn't gotten Cooper to
- 9:34Speaker 3: Jean on the field until week five and he changed
- 9:37Speaker 3: everything right for their defense. And those rookies were coming
- 9:40Speaker 3: along by the end of the year. Like, I don't
- 9:42Speaker 3: know where that, where that change for the Eagles is
- 9:47Speaker 3: this year, other than the idea that you might get
- 9:49Speaker 3: healthier on offense. But then that goes back to the question, well,
- 9:52Speaker 3: they were healthy on offense last year and not very good.
- 9:57Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean their offensive line yesterday was pretty good.
- 10:00Speaker 1: probably the best that it's played almost all season and
- 10:03Speaker 1: um that's saying something I thought um you know Lampkin
- 10:06Speaker 1: held his ground uh Majors was not an abysmal you
- 10:10Speaker 1: know you're not saying hey you had a guy who
- 10:11Speaker 1: got whipped every single play like you were with Juergens
- 10:14Speaker 1: uh if you can get you know I don't know
- 10:17Speaker 1: if Dickerson comes back. I don't know what happens to Lampkin.
- 10:20Speaker 1: But the offensive line, you just said it. I think
- 10:22Speaker 1: that's a good point. They were playing at such a
- 10:24Speaker 1: high level when you were cranking out in 2024. I
- 10:28Speaker 1: just don't see any consistency from this line that's going
- 10:30Speaker 1: to allow this offense to have any consistency all season long.
- 10:35Speaker 2: And they struggle.
- 10:36Speaker 1: I don't know, Jeff, that I watch another team in
- 10:38Speaker 1: football struggle as bad as they do offensively. I know
- 10:40Speaker 1: the stats, the numbers might say elsewhere. But I watch
- 10:43Speaker 1: a lot of football, man. I don't know that I
- 10:45Speaker 1: ever watch.
- 10:46Speaker 2: Teams that are this bad offensively. 45% of their drives
- 10:50Speaker 2: are three and outs. They can't move the ball.
- 10:53Speaker 4: Ever, ever.
- 10:54Speaker 3: All right, so here's their issue, Mike. Everybody says they
- 10:58Speaker 3: have a third down issue, which is a little bit
- 11:00Speaker 3: of misleading, okay? Here are their third downs in the
- 11:04Speaker 3: second half. Third and three, third and nine, third and ten,
- 11:07Speaker 3: third and eight, third and thirteen, third and ten, third
- 11:09Speaker 3: and nine, third and twenty. Does that sound like good,
- 11:12Speaker 3: makeable down and distances to you? I mean, third and
- 11:14Speaker 3: three was good, but everything else there was seven, eight, nine, ten, thirteen,
- 11:18Speaker 3: and twenty. So they have a first and second down problem.
- 11:22Speaker 3: As you just said, they can't move the ball.
- 11:25Speaker 4: And strangely, if.
- 11:26Speaker 3: You look at the first half, and this goes back
- 11:28Speaker 3: to the point we're making, they converted a bunch of
- 11:30Speaker 3: third downs in the first half that were third and long.
- 11:33Speaker 3: They actually have a higher than league average rate of
- 11:37Speaker 3: being able to convert third and long. It's about 20-something percent,
- 11:41Speaker 3: which is hard because most people don't convert third and long.
- 11:44Speaker 4: But when you.
- 11:44Speaker 3: Have that many, it's a volume. When you have that many,
- 11:47Speaker 3: it's going to catch up on you. You know, the
- 11:50Speaker 3: Jaguars in the second half of this game, I thought
- 11:52Speaker 3: they were a little conservative defensively early on. It's almost
- 11:55Speaker 3: like they felt like, hey, these guys have so many
- 11:57Speaker 3: backups on the O-line, we could just win with a
- 11:59Speaker 3: four-man rush. And then they weren't. So in the second half,
- 12:02Speaker 3: they were just bringing, like, delayed blitzes, six-man rushes, overloads,
- 12:07Speaker 3: zero blitzes. I mean, they were just doing everything they could.
- 12:09Speaker 3: But the only reason they could do that was because
- 12:12Speaker 3: the Eagles were constantly behind the sticks because they couldn't
- 12:15Speaker 3: run the ball, and they were an unmakeable second and
- 12:18Speaker 3: third and long down in distances.
- 12:21Speaker 1: Right, and it's not that they couldn't run the ball
- 12:23Speaker 1: because they were on their fourth running back. That's not
- 12:26Speaker 1: an excuse. I mean, Damian Pierce is an NFL running
- 12:28Speaker 1: back who's had success. Now, I don't know. that he's
- 12:30Speaker 1: going to get back to the level of success that
- 12:32Speaker 1: he has. But it's not, man, they were on their
- 12:34Speaker 1: fourth running back. That's why they only had 22 yards rushing.
- 12:38Speaker 1: They just can't run the ball.
- 12:41Speaker 4: Right, because Shipley wasn't running the ball very well.
- 12:44Speaker 3: Obviously, if you go look at Saquon, Saquon's run the
- 12:46Speaker 3: ball well in some stretches.
- 12:48Speaker 2: Look, this is it.
- 12:48Speaker 3: This is all you can hang your hat onto if
- 12:51Speaker 3: you really want to buy into the Eagles as a
- 12:54Speaker 3: conference contender. If you really want to buy into that,
- 12:58Speaker 3: you buy into Saquon– and Landon Dickerson coming back and
- 13:02Speaker 3: Devontae Smith and Dallas Goddard, and they figure out ways
- 13:07Speaker 3: to run the ball better, kind of like they did
- 13:09Speaker 3: in the first half against Chicago and at times against Washington.
- 13:14Speaker 3: That's what you can hang your hat on, but you're
- 13:17Speaker 3: only in week six now, right, and you are down
- 13:20Speaker 3: to your sixth, seventh, and eighth offensive linemen. So if
- 13:24Speaker 3: you're going to hang your hat on guys coming back,
- 13:27Speaker 3: what you're not counting in is who else is going
- 13:29Speaker 3: to get.
- 13:29Speaker 4: Hurt especially on the O-line.
- 13:32Speaker 3: They can't afford any slippage or any more injuries on
- 13:36Speaker 3: the O-line now.
- 13:37Speaker 1: This is like, I guess, 2012 when Andy ended up
- 13:42Speaker 1: getting fired and they moved on to Chip Kelly. You know,
- 13:45Speaker 1: that year they just had four offensive linemen get hurt.
- 13:47Speaker 1: They just constantly had somebody hurt on the offensive line.
- 13:49Speaker 1: And then the next year they all came back healthy
- 13:51Speaker 1: and Chip won 10 games. And it wasn't like Chip
- 13:54Speaker 1: was so great. It was they had a healthy offensive line,
- 13:57Speaker 1: and that line was really good. This feels the same way.
- 14:02Speaker 1: You talk about this all the time. You can handle
- 14:05Speaker 1: one guy getting hurt and the next man up. It's
- 14:07Speaker 1: when you have multiple guys at the same position that
- 14:10Speaker 1: get hurt, and now you're at your third center, your
- 14:12Speaker 1: third left guard. Yesterday you were on your second right guard,
- 14:15Speaker 1: your second right tackle.
- 14:17Speaker 2: That's just not a recipe for a victory.
- 14:20Speaker 3: Yeah, 2020 goes into that too because if you remember,
- 14:22Speaker 3: they started that year with Brett Toth at right tackle.
- 14:27Speaker 3: I think Lane had had the ankle issues going on
- 14:30Speaker 3: or maybe something else either. And then the right guard,
- 14:33Speaker 3: they had to start the fourth-round pick that year, Jack Driscoll.
- 14:36Speaker 2: Jack Driscoll.
- 14:36Speaker 4: Because they had, I think, Sam Alu at that time
- 14:39Speaker 4: was injured.
- 14:40Speaker 3: And when you start off with two backups in week
- 14:45Speaker 3: one– What's your margin of error? Because then other guys
- 14:47Speaker 3: wound up getting hurt. I think Mailata actually got hurt
- 14:50Speaker 3: that year, too, with his shoulder, if I remember. He
- 14:52Speaker 3: landed on it and missed a few games. And next
- 14:54Speaker 3: thing you know, you can't win because you have zero
- 14:57Speaker 3: offensive linemen.
- 14:58Speaker 1: No, the offensive line problem is massive right now. Their
- 15:02Speaker 1: offense is– I've never seen anything so bad.
- 15:06Speaker 2: I mean, it's bad. It is bad.
- 15:07Speaker 1: That being said, what do you make of Hurt's reaction,
- 15:11Speaker 1: the way he reacted to this yesterday? I mean, is
- 15:13Speaker 1: this him saying– I don't trust the staff. There's some
- 15:17Speaker 1: friction here. What do I make of him saying, I
- 15:20Speaker 1: don't have anything to do with that?
- 15:22Speaker 4: I think it was Hurts just avoiding.
- 15:25Speaker 3: Saying something that's probably going to sound really incriminating for
- 15:29Speaker 3: his coaching staff. I mean, I'm sure deep inside he
- 15:32Speaker 3: would have liked to have tried to do a few
- 15:34Speaker 3: things a little bit more aggressively, whether it's the run
- 15:36Speaker 3: game or throwing some passes in the middle of the
- 15:39Speaker 3: field on that final drop.
- 15:40Speaker 4: Who knows? You know, he threw the ball to Mekhi Lemon.
- 15:43Speaker 4: Lemming goes out of bounds. Just not good.
- 15:47Speaker 3: There were a couple of plays where Hurts himself didn't
- 15:49Speaker 3: throw a ball to a guy who was open.
- 15:51Speaker 4: So, I mean, he's got to.
- 15:52Speaker 3: Take– he did take responsibility. But it's just– what can
- 15:57Speaker 3: he say in that.
- 15:58Speaker 1: Moment that's going to make anybody feel– Well, it's like
- 16:00Speaker 1: Jake Elliott yesterday. He seemingly wanted to be like, I
- 16:03Speaker 1: didn't agree with the call, but I just did what
- 16:05Speaker 1: I was told.
- 16:06Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah.
- 16:07Speaker 4: I'm sure– and I'm sure that's how people feel. These
- 16:09Speaker 4: are not calls, though, that are like 90-10 either.
- 16:12Speaker 3: As we just– like there's some 50-50 on what to
- 16:17Speaker 3: do in that situation, you know, with the kickoff.
- 16:21Speaker 1: Yeah, Sirianni, you know, he did take the blame. Hey,
- 16:25Speaker 1: I should have kicked it into the end zone. He's
- 16:26Speaker 1: acknowledging that he should have kicked it into the end zone.
- 16:28Speaker 1: And I think most of us all agree. I'm not
- 16:30Speaker 1: sitting here trying to defend him on that. You should
- 16:32Speaker 1: kick the ball in the end zone. You take your
- 16:33Speaker 1: chance that the guy might make a 70-yard field goal
- 16:36Speaker 1: against you. Now, I wonder how much in the back
- 16:39Speaker 1: of his mind is that Little can make a 70-yard
- 16:41Speaker 1: field goal So I'll take my chances that my coverage
- 16:44Speaker 1: unit can make the tackle and the time will come
- 16:48Speaker 1: off the clock and here we go. But it's just
- 16:51Speaker 1: an overall disaster of a day on a game that
- 16:54Speaker 1: you should have had no business being in yesterday. But
- 16:57Speaker 1: the one positive was your defense finally played really well.
- 17:00Speaker 1: Your defense finally stepped up and kept you in that
- 17:03Speaker 1: game and gave you a chance to win. When you
- 17:05Speaker 1: needed stops, they got them. When there was a fourth down,
- 17:08Speaker 1: they get the stop. Because all year long, when they've
- 17:10Speaker 1: needed to get stopped, they haven't been able to get them.
- 17:12Speaker 3: Yeah, no, and Jalen Carter really came alive. I mean,
- 17:15Speaker 3: he was a disruptive force. He was in the first half.
- 17:18Speaker 3: I think in the second half, not so much. But
- 17:20Speaker 3: he was a one-man wrecking crew in the first half.
- 17:22Speaker 3: The real shame is that they got the interception from
- 17:25Speaker 3: Quinn Young Mitchell.
- 17:26Speaker 4: They didn't turn the ball over themselves.
- 17:28Speaker 3: So, once again, they won the turnover battle on the
- 17:31Speaker 3: road and lost, which, like, defies all of the.
- 17:35Speaker 4: Stats, right? You always say if you win the turnover
- 17:37Speaker 4: battle on the road, you're going to win, like, 70%
- 17:38Speaker 4: of the time.
- 17:39Speaker 2: Well, you were a home team. You essentially had a
- 17:42Speaker 2: home game yesterday.
- 17:43Speaker 4: Yeah, that's true.
- 17:44Speaker 2: That is true.
- 17:45Speaker 3: But the other thing is those strip sacks that Jalen
- 17:47Speaker 3: Carter got, it's like an unfortunate bounce of the ball
- 17:51Speaker 3: that the Jaguars were able to recover both of them.
- 17:55Speaker 3: Usually the Eagles are kind of jumping on top of those.
- 17:58Speaker 3: Usually the Eagles are blocking a kick. They're not getting
- 18:01Speaker 3: what they need. And unfortunately, the two or three plays
- 18:04Speaker 3: they don't make on defense are become exacerbated. You know, obviously, Makuba,
- 18:09Speaker 3: what I think happened is he got caught peeking into
- 18:11Speaker 3: the backfield. He was coming down to play the run
- 18:14Speaker 3: on that Parker Washington touchdown that went for 51 yards.
- 18:18Speaker 3: And then the second Washington touchdown, I want to say, like,
- 18:22Speaker 3: Rick Wallen was there.
- 18:23Speaker 4: He didn't get turned. He didn't turn around.
- 18:25Speaker 3: I'm not 100% sure that if he does turn around,
- 18:27Speaker 3: he makes the play. That is the knock on him
- 18:30Speaker 3: with the deep ball and has been with Seattle. But
- 18:32Speaker 3: you got to give Parker Washington made an unbelievable catch.
- 18:35Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 18:36Speaker 1: Yeah, listen, he makes a great play. This Jacksonville team's
- 18:40Speaker 1: pretty good. I mean, we talked to Adam on Thursday.
- 18:43Speaker 1: I think he said they're either his number one team
- 18:45Speaker 1: or his number one team in the AFC.
- 18:47Speaker 2: One or the other.
- 18:48Speaker 1: Their Super Bowl odds, they have the sixth shortest odds
- 18:50Speaker 1: in football to win the Super Bowl. It's a good
- 18:53Speaker 1: team that you basically went toe-to-toe with for the most
- 18:55Speaker 1: part defensively, I'd say.
- 18:57Speaker 2: Offensively, I'll tell you what, Jeff.
- 19:00Speaker 1: I could be encouraged and think, yes, I'm in the
- 19:02Speaker 1: mix in the division because my defense is good enough.
- 19:07Speaker 1: I have no– not 1%.
- 19:13Speaker 2: Do I feel this offense is going to improve. Not one.
- 19:16Speaker 1: Right.
- 19:17Speaker 3: So, I mean, so you get an interesting case here
- 19:19Speaker 3: in week six, right, where the Eagles are going to
- 19:22Speaker 3: play the Panthers. Now, I'm sure everybody looked at that
- 19:24Speaker 3: game before the year and was like, ha, that's an
- 19:26Speaker 3: easy Eagles win, right? Well, the Panthers scored– I don't
- 19:30Speaker 3: know if they scored the most points by average in
- 19:33Speaker 3: the NFL, but certainly Bryce Young was leading– the NFL
- 19:36Speaker 3: in yards per game.
- 19:37Speaker 1: I mean, they can score, they can score, they can score.
- 19:40Speaker 4: They'll have Coker, they'll have McMillan. They're coming up there by.
- 19:43Speaker 3: So, uh, I mean, Trouble Hubbard does nothing but score
- 19:46Speaker 3: touchdowns amazingly because he's not very explosive.
- 19:49Speaker 4: So, what do you need from the Eagles' offense to
- 19:52Speaker 4: be able to win this game? Do you need 24 points?
- 19:55Speaker 3: Like, can the defense hold them at 21? And if
- 19:57Speaker 3: that's the case, can you get 24 points?
- 20:00Speaker 4: Can you get 18 points? I just don't know at
- 20:02Speaker 4: this point.
- 20:04Speaker 1: It's so sad that this is the conversation, but it's
- 20:06Speaker 1: a fair conversation. that I literally don't think offensively they
- 20:10Speaker 1: can score. I mean, you just said it. Carolina can score.
- 20:13Speaker 1: They can put up 30, 35 points in a game.
- 20:15Speaker 1: I mean, now against this defense, maybe not. But it's
- 20:19Speaker 1: a team that you will have to be able to
- 20:21Speaker 1: score more than 17 points against to likely beat. And
- 20:26Speaker 1: I have no feel at all that this, with Barkley,
- 20:30Speaker 1: with Devontae, I don't know, like having Devontae Smith yesterday,
- 20:32Speaker 1: does that change anything?
- 20:34Speaker 4: Yes, absolutely. I'll tell you where it changes something.
- 20:37Speaker 2: Okay. Okay.
- 20:38Speaker 4: I feel like Jalen Hurts is getting a little bit too...
- 20:40Speaker 4: I don't know.
- 20:41Speaker 3: Maybe it's the thing that everybody does. They default to
- 20:43Speaker 3: the quarterback sucks when the team loses. But given the
- 20:47Speaker 3: environment around him, I think Hurts is making more positives
- 20:51Speaker 3: than negatives. Which is a good thing when the environment
- 20:55Speaker 3: around him stinks. I think that if that's Devontae Smith
- 21:00Speaker 3: lined up at the X receiver spot or outside receiver
- 21:03Speaker 3: spot when the Jaguars are sending a cover zero blitz, meaning...
- 21:07Speaker 3: man coverage right and everybody else is blitzing instead of
- 21:10Speaker 3: Dontavion Wicks I think that that's a touchdown down the
- 21:13Speaker 3: left sideline now you know Hurts put it up I
- 21:16Speaker 3: don't think it was a bad ball he Wicks doesn't
- 21:19Speaker 3: get under it because he's not as fast and explosive
- 21:21Speaker 3: he's a good receiver but I mean I think those
- 21:23Speaker 3: are the kind of plays in a close game that
- 21:26Speaker 3: if you were throwing the ball Devante there don't you
- 21:29Speaker 3: think he gets that ball like he's under that ball Probably.
- 21:32Speaker 1: Yeah, the one that he floats right, the 60-yard shot
- 21:35Speaker 1: down the sideline where they got a clear touchdown.
- 21:38Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, I think that's a touchdown, and maybe
- 21:40Speaker 3: that puts the game away a lot easier.
- 21:42Speaker 2: I guess that one's fair.
- 21:45Speaker 1: Listen, it's not to say that these guys, you know,
- 21:46Speaker 1: that Smith is considerably better than what they have, so
- 21:49Speaker 1: maybe it's not fair to say even if he's out
- 21:51Speaker 1: there things, but I don't know that getting Barkley changed
- 21:54Speaker 1: as much.
- 21:54Speaker 2: I'll tell you that much.
- 21:55Speaker 3: Well, I agree, and I'll just go back with Smith
- 21:58Speaker 3: to say if Smith doesn't play in that Titans game,
- 22:02Speaker 3: I don't know if the offense drives down the field
- 22:05Speaker 3: to a touchdown because Smith was a big part of that.
- 22:08Speaker 3: So if Smith plays in this game, the two or
- 22:11Speaker 3: three cat, whatever catches he has, including that play there,
- 22:14Speaker 3: maybe I think can at least get you the points
- 22:17Speaker 3: you needed to win instead of losing another gut wrencher.
- 22:21Speaker 4: But you're right. You're right to say though, but what
- 22:23Speaker 4: does that mean?
- 22:24Speaker 2: The longterm? I don't know.
- 22:25Speaker 4: It means you beat a team. You should be, or
- 22:27Speaker 4: a game that you should steal.
- 22:28Speaker 3: You get, but you might lose a couple other games
- 22:30Speaker 3: against teams that people think you're going to, You're going
- 22:32Speaker 3: to easily win.
- 22:33Speaker 4: You might lose.
- 22:34Speaker 2: It's funny.
- 22:35Speaker 1: The only time they had some fluidity in the offense
- 22:38Speaker 1: was when they threw the ball to Lemon and he
- 22:41Speaker 1: went out of bounds.
- 22:44Speaker 4: Well, he had a nice opening drive.
- 22:46Speaker 3: It was not the opening drive.
- 22:48Speaker 1: No, the first quarter they had a good drive. I said, man,
- 22:53Speaker 1: Hurts is throwing the ball. They look like they got
- 22:55Speaker 1: a little something here. The throw he makes to Cooper.
- 22:57Speaker 1: Cooper is a player, man. He obviously makes stuff happen.
- 23:01Speaker 3: I think that if there's a takeaway from this is
- 23:04Speaker 3: they have to figure out a way to continue to
- 23:06Speaker 3: throw it to Cooper and get him schemed for the
- 23:09Speaker 3: ball to go to him more often because he makes
- 23:12Speaker 3: so many plays.
- 23:13Speaker 1: So when Smith comes back, who snaps does Cooper get?
- 23:18Speaker 4: Great question.
- 23:20Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 23:21Speaker 4: I mean, to me, I'm of the belief he's an
- 23:24Speaker 4: outside receiver.
- 23:25Speaker 3: You can put him in the slot and make him
- 23:27Speaker 3: a dynamic power slot, but He looks like, to me,
- 23:29Speaker 3: he can line up outside. I mean, that touchdown he
- 23:32Speaker 3: caught was basically he beat the cornerback off the line
- 23:35Speaker 3: of scrimmage. And I guess to cover one, great idea
- 23:38Speaker 3: by Hertz to throw it down the sideline.
- 23:40Speaker 1: Great idea by Hertz to get it, see the one-on-one,
- 23:43Speaker 1: and then he makes that catch and just breaks free.
- 23:46Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah.
- 23:46Speaker 3: So, I mean, you struggle to score offense. I know
- 23:49Speaker 3: Makai Lemon's a first-round pick, and he's starting to give
- 23:52Speaker 3: you some underneath.
- 23:53Speaker 4: But maybe it's Wicks that you do.
- 23:55Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 23:56Speaker 4: But they've got to figure out a way to get
- 23:57Speaker 4: him the ball. He's good.
- 23:59Speaker 1: And late drive, the 17-yard throw to Goddard. I mean,
- 24:02Speaker 1: great pass protection. Hurts steps up and fired that baby
- 24:05Speaker 1: in there. And it's like, man, there you go. That's
- 24:07Speaker 1: the throw. That's when you need them. But obviously it
- 24:11Speaker 1: ends in disaster yesterday. All right, plenty more on Football
- 24:15Speaker 1: at Four this week. They're getting ready for Carolina, who
- 24:16Speaker 1: averages 30 points a game, by the way, over 400
- 24:19Speaker 1: yards per game on offense. The Eagles, by the way,
- 24:22Speaker 1: had 232 yards of offense yesterday.
- 24:25Speaker 2: Yikes. All right. More over at phillyvoice.com. Read Jeff Mosher.
- 24:29Speaker 1: He'll be back on Wednesday's show here on Football at
- 24:32Speaker 1: Four on the Sports Pass.
- 24:33Speaker 2: Thanks, man.
- 24:33Speaker 1: All right, man.
- 24:34Speaker 4: Take care.
- 24:35Speaker 2: There he is, Jeff Mosher.
