Latest / Mount Eaton Church / Love GOD: Where Your Treasure Is…. - Matthew 6:19-34
Transcript
- 0:09All right. You guys would please grab your Bibles,
- 0:13turn to Matthew 6. Also, we're going to do the
- 0:19scripture, the doctrinal focus. Let's read the
- 0:22question and then you guys will read the answer.
- 0:24What does it benefit us to know that God has
- 0:28created all things and still upholds them by
- 0:32his providence? We can be patient in adversity,
- 0:37thankful in prosperity, and with the view of
- 0:41the future, we can have a firm confidence in
- 0:45our faithful God and Father. that no creature
- 0:49shall separate us from his love. For all creatures
- 0:54are so completely in his hand that without his
- 0:59they cannot... Excellent. Thank you very much.
- 1:05All right. So, this is not going to be an easy
- 1:11sermon. You guys just don't know how providential...
- 1:18Welcome back is. It's quite cool, actually. We
- 1:24have to address this issue. So I'm going to be
- 1:27very frank and open with you. And then I'm going
- 1:30to deal with this very biblically. We are going
- 1:32to be doing a series over this next month, a
- 1:36four -part series. Love God, love his word, love
- 1:38his ways, love his things. If you haven't had
- 1:40a chance, go downstairs. You'll see on the above
- 1:44the double door. Thank you, Pam. I forgot what
- 1:47that machine is. Cricket. She cricketed it. Cricketed
- 1:53it. And that's really our purpose is to love
- 2:00God, love his word, love his ways, love his things.
- 2:02And so we're going to be dealing with those four
- 2:04parts, those four things over this next month.
- 2:06And so the first issue is to love God. And there
- 2:09is a very practical, simple, biblical way that
- 2:12God determines love, right? One. Love is obedience.
- 2:16I'll prove that. Two, it's seen in your wallet.
- 2:19Now, I don't like preaching on money messages.
- 2:22You guys know that. I've been here three years.
- 2:24We talked about money once, I think. And it was
- 2:26not even like that kind of like a giving thing
- 2:29because we were fine. But I'll make it really
- 2:31frank with you like I did with first service.
- 2:34Financially, we're in trouble. So when I got
- 2:38back, I got a phone call from finance department,
- 2:41finance. Yeah, pastor. We only got like $7 ,600
- 2:46in the bank. When we started the year, we had
- 2:49$30 ,000 in the bank. In four months, we've lost
- 2:53$25 ,000. So what's the first question I'm going
- 2:55to ask? How are we spending our money? Good news
- 2:59is it's not a spending issue. The deacons have
- 3:02done a phenomenal job in stewarding the money.
- 3:05It's not a spending issue. It's not because we're
- 3:08overspending on electric. It's not because we're
- 3:10overspending on other things. It's a giving issue.
- 3:15We have lost $10 ,000 a month in giving. So how
- 3:22does a pastor address this? Does he do like other
- 3:25pastors do? Lock the doors and, you know, got
- 3:31to pay the electric bill. It's $1 ,000. Come
- 3:33on, who wants to help? Have guys stand up here
- 3:36and people walk up and then count the money and
- 3:39then they go, oh, we're $500 short. We need to
- 3:41do five more. I'm not going to do that. Or do
- 3:43we do a marketing scheme like the rest of these
- 3:45quote -unquote churches do, put on concerts and
- 3:49fundraisers, and is that the way church is supposed
- 3:52to work? Do we create marketing schemes in order
- 3:56to raise money? No. We deal with it biblically.
- 4:00We deal with the issue biblically. There are
- 4:03three types, three people within the church when
- 4:06it comes to money. Those who give out of ignorance.
- 4:09In other words, they don't know that they're
- 4:11supposed to give and they don't know how they're
- 4:12supposed to give. And so they just don't know.
- 4:15They haven't been taught. They're new in the
- 4:16faith. And giving has a stigma to it because
- 4:20churches, bad churches, have presented giving
- 4:24in such a way that it makes it look like churches,
- 4:28all they want is money. That's not our church.
- 4:31And there are those who just don't give. They
- 4:35know they should give. They just don't give,
- 4:37and as a result of them not giving, they're living
- 4:40disobediently. And then there are those who give
- 4:43faithfully, and within that faithful group, there
- 4:47are those who give abundantly. They are generous,
- 4:52and then there are those who are not. They just
- 4:56give a little and say, I did my deed. Well, God
- 5:00deals with it in a very practical way, and that's
- 5:02how we're going to look at this today. I will
- 5:05tell you. It's sin. There is sin that leads to
- 5:09death, and there is sin that does not lead to
- 5:11death. The sin that does not lead to death is
- 5:13sin out of ignorance. I just didn't know. After
- 5:17today, you'll know. Then there is sin that is
- 5:20rebellious, that leads to death. Purposeful sin,
- 5:23unwilling to be generous with their lives. Because
- 5:27they place a value on a dollar, and they compare
- 5:31that dollar to the value of the sacrificed Son
- 5:35of God, and say, that's how much it's worth.
- 5:38And so here we go. Are you ready? We're going
- 5:41to handle this on a biblical way. I told you
- 5:43that. We talked about this in our deacons meeting
- 5:47and elder meeting. And I told them I will address
- 5:51it immediately because we can't go another month.
- 5:54If we don't change this now, the church will
- 5:58start to desize. Here's what will happen. I'm
- 6:01going to make it very clear with you what I told
- 6:03the deacons and the elders agree. We would then
- 6:07lay off the non -essential staff. After the non
- 6:10-essential staff, if things don't change, then
- 6:12we lay off Jody. After Jody comes Marilyn. After
- 6:18Marilyn comes me. After me, we sell the church.
- 6:23That is what disobedience will do. Just being
- 6:26very real with you. This church will not close.
- 6:30I am fully convinced that the Lord has established
- 6:33her for 142 years for a reason. But in order
- 6:37for us as a people of God to get to where we
- 6:39need to be spiritually with him, in the total
- 6:42surrender of our lives, we must learn to surrender
- 6:45the very thing that has the least value. But
- 6:49the thing that has the least value is the one
- 6:51thing we hold on to tighter than anything because
- 6:53we think that without it, I will not survive.
- 6:56So I will share biblically how God handles this
- 6:59issue, okay? If this was not an issue, even then,
- 7:03Christ would have never addressed it. God would
- 7:06have never addressed it. God addressed it in
- 7:10the tithe. Christ addresses it in the sacrifice.
- 7:14Either way, we must learn to give sacrificially.
- 7:19So here we go. Matthew 6. Verse 19 through 34.
- 7:24Now one of the things I want you to notice concerning
- 7:26Matthew 6, verse 19 through 34, is please be
- 7:30quick to get rid of the headings. The headings
- 7:32mean nothing. This is a continual thought that
- 7:37Christ is clearly articulating concerning the
- 7:40heart of his people. One, before he deals with
- 7:44the issue of the treasures in heaven, he deals
- 7:46with the issue of fasting. That means, am I willing
- 7:49to give up my physical body for the sake of Christ
- 7:53and to be holy and to really understand the importance
- 7:56of why I do fast? But he gets to the point where
- 8:00he deals with the treasure. And this thought
- 8:03continues from verse 19 through 34. It's a continual
- 8:07thought, not different thought, continual thought.
- 8:09You're going to see that in a minute. Here we
- 8:10go. Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on
- 8:13earth. Where moth and rust destroy, where thieves
- 8:17break in and steal. But lay up for yourselves
- 8:20treasures in heaven where neither moth nor rust
- 8:24destroys or thieves break in and steal. For where
- 8:28your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
- 8:30Father, I want to thank you that you are good.
- 8:34That you want our heart. You want our entire
- 8:37being. You want everything of us. as stewards
- 8:42of all that you've given. We are not the owners.
- 8:46We are the stewards. Help us to see our responsibility
- 8:51to turn our hearts towards you in obedience,
- 8:54to live rightly before a holy and mighty God,
- 8:57and to love you supremely in Jesus' name. Amen.
- 9:00The eye is the lamp of the body. So if the eye
- 9:04is healthy, your whole body will be full of light.
- 9:07But if your eye is bad, your whole body... Do
- 9:27you see the thought here? Why does he deal with
- 9:33the eye? Because we have placed our affection
- 9:35on our wallets. Therefore, That when you see
- 9:40a therefore, it's therefore because it's there
- 9:44for you to pay attention. Hope you like that
- 9:47one. That's kind of a new one. Everyone else
- 9:49usually says the same thing. I just want to be
- 9:51slightly different. I am different. Therefore,
- 9:55I tell you, do not be anxious about your life,
- 9:58what you will eat or what you will drink, nor
- 10:01about your body, what you will put on. Is not
- 10:05life more than food and the body more than clothing?
- 10:08Look at the birds of the air. They neither sow
- 10:11nor reap nor gather in the barns, yet your heavenly
- 10:14Father feeds them. And are you not more value
- 10:18than they? And which of you, being anxious, can
- 10:22add a single hour or span of life? And why are
- 10:27you anxious about clothing? Consider the lilies
- 10:30of the field, how they grow. They neither toil
- 10:33nor spin. Yet I tell you, even Solomon in all
- 10:36of his glory was not arrayed like one of these.
- 10:40But if God so clothes the grass of the field,
- 10:44which today is alive and tomorrow is thrown into
- 10:46the oven, will he not much more clothe you? And
- 10:50you, O you of little faith, therefore do not
- 10:54be anxious, saying, What shall we eat? Or what
- 10:58shall we drink? Or what shall we wear? Do you
- 11:14hear that? Don't hold on to your money because
- 11:18you're afraid you're not going to be able to
- 11:20pay a bill. Don't hold on to your money because
- 11:22you're afraid I've got to feed my family. Don't
- 11:24hold on to your money because I need new clothes.
- 11:26Or my kids might need sneakers. Don't hold on
- 11:29to your money because you think you're not going
- 11:31to make it. What's he say? Seek first the kingdom
- 11:34of God and his righteousness and all these things
- 11:36shall be added unto you. I am a personal testimony
- 11:39of that. When you start ministry off at 200 to
- 11:46400 and 800 hours a month for two years with
- 11:50a family of four and you're wondering how am
- 11:53I going to feed my family? When you don't have
- 11:56the money to buy the food and you give your tithe
- 12:00anyway, watch what God did. He fed, we lived
- 12:04like kings. Why? Because we didn't care. We wanted
- 12:09the kingdom of God. That's what we wanted. Therefore,
- 12:12do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow
- 12:16will be anxious for itself. Sufficient for the
- 12:19day is its own trouble. Stop living for tomorrow.
- 12:24Live now. Tomorrow will take care of itself,
- 12:27and God will take care of everything. You're
- 12:31like, well, pastor, why are you talking about
- 12:32this stuff? Because people stop giving because
- 12:36they're afraid they're not going to be able to
- 12:37make their ends meet. Here's why. God owns it
- 12:42all. Literally everything. It all exists, and
- 12:48you exist for his good pleasure. You don't exist
- 12:53because you own yourself. God owns you. He owns
- 12:57the saved and the unsaved. He owns it all. Everything
- 13:02is his. You're like, what's the point of living?
- 13:04Because he is God and he deserves glory. That's
- 13:08why we live. Philippians 2 .13 clarifies the
- 13:12reality that everything exists for his pleasure.
- 13:15Colossians 1 .16 -17. On earth, visible, invisible,
- 13:25whether thrones, dominions, or rulers, or authorities,
- 13:30all things were created through him and for him.
- 13:35Who created America? Jesus did. America didn't
- 13:40exist because we wanted our freedom. America
- 13:43exists because God wanted her to exist. He established
- 13:48her. Our responsibility is to steward it. Have
- 13:52done a good job. Here we go. Verse 17 says, And
- 13:57he is before all things, and in him all things
- 14:01hold together. The literal existence of the earth
- 14:04and you being here is God literally keeps you
- 14:07from exploding. It's literal. Psalm 24. Verse
- 14:131 and 2. The earth is the Lord's and the fullness
- 14:17thereof. The world and those who dwell therein.
- 14:21Are whose? The Lord's. Why? For he has founded
- 14:26it upon the seas and established it upon the
- 14:28rivers. Psalm 50, verse 10 through 15. For every
- 14:33beast of the forest is mine. The cattle on a
- 14:38thousand hills. I know all the birds of the hills
- 14:41and all that moves in the field is mine. If I
- 14:46were hungry, I would not tell you. You think
- 14:49God needs to come to you and go, you know, I'm
- 14:52really hungry right now. Would you please give
- 14:54me something to eat? Do you think God comes to
- 14:57you and says, you know, I have a bill I have
- 15:00to pay for. I really need your help for me to
- 15:03pay it. So when I tell you that God doesn't need
- 15:06your money, He doesn't need your money. He's
- 15:09not in need of anything. He is completely self
- 15:11-sufficient and fully self -governed. He is in
- 15:15need of nothing. He is completely and totally
- 15:18satisfied within himself. There is nothing that
- 15:22God needs. Why does God do anything for his glory?
- 15:24If I were hungry, I would not tell you, for the
- 15:27world and its fullness are mine. Do I eat the
- 15:32flesh of bulls or drink the blood of goats? No.
- 15:36Offer to God a sacrifice of thanksgiving. When
- 15:40we give to God, it's because thank you. Everything
- 15:43I give you, everything to thank you. And perform
- 15:47your vows to the Most High. So when God calls
- 15:52us to give, it's to give a sacrifice of thanksgiving
- 15:56and to fulfill a vow that we've promised. And
- 16:00call upon me in the day of trouble. I will deliver
- 16:04you and you shall glorify me. Do you see that?
- 16:08It's not just for your benefit. He will deliver
- 16:12us and we shall glorify him in our acts of giving
- 16:16towards him. Why? God has called and made us
- 16:20alive in Christ to love. To love him specifically.
- 16:24Why do we give? Because God loved us first. God
- 16:28gave first. God gave the most valued thing first.
- 16:33We are created to love him and serve him. 1 John
- 16:374, 7 -9 Beloved, let us love one another for
- 16:41love is from God and whoever loves has been born
- 16:44of God and knows God and anyone who does not
- 16:47love does not know God because God is love. In
- 16:50this the love of God was made manifest among
- 16:54us that God sent his only son into the world
- 16:58so that we might live through him. Do you see
- 17:00what God gave? For God so loved the world that
- 17:03he gave his only begotten son. Do you think a
- 17:06dollar is worth Jesus? Think about that. Matthew
- 17:0922. And he said to them, you shall love the Lord
- 17:13your God with all your heart and with all your
- 17:14soul and with all your mind. This is the greatest
- 17:17and first commandment. And the second is like
- 17:19it. You shall love your neighbor as yourself.
- 17:21On these two commandments depend all the law
- 17:26and the prophets. The entire word of God hangs
- 17:29on the command to love God and love others. Why?
- 17:35Because Christ commands us to love him. Obedience
- 17:39is not an option. It's a command. Giving is not
- 17:43an option. It's a command. God commands you to
- 17:47give. Christ commands us to love him, and the
- 17:50proof of that love is in obedience. John chapter
- 17:5414, verse 15 and 21. John 14, verse 15 and 21.
- 17:59If you love me, let me say it again. If you agape
- 18:04me, he says. If you love me, you will keep my
- 18:09commandments. Look what it says in verse 21.
- 18:12Whoever has my commandments and keeps them, it
- 18:16is he who loves me. And he who loves me will
- 18:20be loved by my father and I will love him and
- 18:22manifest myself to him. How do we know that we
- 18:26are in him and that he has manifested himself
- 18:28to us? It's because I love him and I want to
- 18:32be obedient to him. The fact that I love God,
- 18:36And I want to obey him as the reality of his
- 18:38manifestation to me because he made me love him.
- 18:42Here's the proof. 1 John 2, verse 3 through 6.
- 18:46And by this we know that we have come to know
- 18:51him if we keep his commandments. Whoever says
- 18:55I know him but does not keep his commandments
- 18:58is a liar and the truth is not in him. But whoever
- 19:02keeps his word, in him truly the love of God
- 19:05is perfected. By this we know, we may know that
- 19:09we are in him. Whoever says he abides in him
- 19:12ought to walk in the same way in which he walked.
- 19:16Do you think Jesus needed anything? No. Jesus
- 19:20said, the son of man has no place to lay his
- 19:22head. Did he ever ask for a house? No. As a matter
- 19:25of fact, do you remember this little story? There's
- 19:27a bunch of people gathered outside. They're all
- 19:30sitting down and Jesus was talking. And Peter,
- 19:32you know, brave. Peter, you know Peter. He opens
- 19:35his mouth and gets himself in trouble, I think.
- 19:38He's like, hey, Jesus, I think we should send
- 19:41these people home because it's getting late and
- 19:43they need to eat. Did Jesus go, oh, my gosh,
- 19:46I need your help. What did he say to them? He
- 19:50said, you give them something to eat. It'd take
- 19:53an entire week's of work to get enough money
- 19:56to buy food for these people. And plus the next
- 19:58market is like 50 miles. I'm just being, I'm
- 20:02adding, I'm being a little bit. It wasn't like
- 20:0550 miles. I'm just saying. No, Jesus goes, you
- 20:09feed them. And what does he do? Peter goes, oh,
- 20:11okay. He said, go find some food. So he walks,
- 20:14finds a little boy. The little boy has what?
- 20:17Five loaves and? What did Jesus do? Thank you,
- 20:21Father, for all your provision. And he fed 5
- 20:24,000 people and then had 12 basketfuls left over
- 20:27eat one basket for each disciple. Do you think
- 20:31Jesus needs anything? Not at all. Look what it
- 20:34says. 1 John 5, 1 through 5. Everyone who believes
- 20:38that Jesus is the Christ has been born of God.
- 20:41And everyone who loves the Father loves whoever
- 20:44has been born of him. By this we know that we
- 20:48love the children of God. I want you to hear
- 20:53this. By this we know that we love one another.
- 20:59You ready? I bet you didn't see this here. When?
- 21:03We love God and obey his commands. You mean I
- 21:07love you when I'm obedient? Yes. When I'm disobedient,
- 21:10do you think it doesn't affect you? It's like
- 21:12a ripple. Take a stone, throw it in the lake.
- 21:14What happens to the ripple? All the little secret
- 21:16things we all do behind the doors, don't you
- 21:19think that doesn't affect the church? All of
- 21:21us are affected. And I'll give you an example
- 21:23of what God dealt with me on my sabbatical. You're
- 21:26going to notice that I will no longer be on Facebook
- 21:29anymore. Facebook will be deleted officially
- 21:32on the 27th of this month. It will no longer
- 21:36exist. Almost 20 years of memories will be wiped
- 21:39out in a matter of a second. All the pictures,
- 21:42784 pictures, will be deleted. Why? Because no
- 21:46memory is worth the testimony of my life concerning
- 21:51the redemption of Christ upon me. Facebook isn't
- 21:55worth a single iota of sexual porn. That's what's
- 22:01filled with Facebook now. Gone. Done. Not supporting
- 22:06it and I don't want it. Because it's not going
- 22:09to hook me and drag me down like other men of
- 22:12God. My point, I love God. I love God. I want
- 22:16to obey him. Why? Because he lives in me. Obedience.
- 22:21Bye bye Facebook. That's good because I don't
- 22:24have any more social medias. I don't have to
- 22:26worry about it anymore. Worry about all the weird
- 22:28stuff too. For this, Is the love of God. Verse
- 22:313. That we keep his commandments. Do you hear
- 22:34that? This is the love of God. That we keep his
- 22:37commandments. And his commandments are not burdensome.
- 22:40For everyone who has been born of God overcomes
- 22:43the world. And this is the victory that has overcome
- 22:46the world. Our faith. Who is it that overcomes
- 22:49the world? Except the one who believes that Jesus
- 22:52is the son of God. Two stories. I'm almost done.
- 22:56It's going to be a long. It's okay. It's church.
- 23:00Two stories I want you to see, and I want you
- 23:01to be able to see it biblically. A great act
- 23:04of love and obedience versus a great act of selfishness
- 23:07and disobedience. First, Matthew 19, verse 16
- 23:11through 22. Pay attention to the sign of disobedience.
- 23:14Here we go. And behold, a man came up to Jesus,
- 23:18came up to him saying, Teacher, what good deed
- 23:21must I do to have eternal life? Really? Which
- 23:26one should I do? Interesting statement. And he
- 23:30said to him, why do you ask me about what is
- 23:33good? There is only one who is good. If you would
- 23:37enter life, keep the commandments. That's not
- 23:40rocket science. He's a Jew. The young man said
- 23:45to him, which ones? That's what I thought. All
- 23:50of them. Like, which ones should I do? I don't
- 23:53know. Which ones feel good? Doesn't that make
- 23:56sense? And Jesus said to him, you should not
- 23:59murder, and you should not commit adultery, and
- 24:01you should not steal, and you should not bear
- 24:02false witness, honor your father or mother, and
- 24:04you shall love your neighbor as yourself. Isn't
- 24:07it interesting that the commandments that Jesus
- 24:09gives are the ones that are relational to you
- 24:11and me? How about if you love your neighbor first?
- 24:14How about if you do the last six? He uses all
- 24:20those. Do these last six. Because remember, what
- 24:22it says is if I'm loving you, I'm being obedient
- 24:26to the word. Look what it says here. Verse 20.
- 24:30The young man said to him, all these I've kept.
- 24:33What do I still lack? I should do it in like
- 24:36that rich voice. Oh, I've done all these. What
- 24:43do I lack? Doth I lack anything? Watch what Jesus
- 24:49says. It's so cool. And he says to him. Jesus
- 24:53said to him, if you would be perfect, go sell
- 24:57all. Go sell what you possess. Go sell your stuff,
- 25:03all of it. He doesn't go 10%. He doesn't say,
- 25:07hey, you know, just sell 10 % and then come follow
- 25:09me, and you keep 90. You notice that? So it's
- 25:12more than a tithe. The idea is that God wants
- 25:15all of it. He wants all of you, every ounce of
- 25:18you, every single cell. Everything. He wants
- 25:22his heart. And he says, go sell your possessions.
- 25:24Why? Because he loved his possessions. And give
- 25:27it to the poor and you will have treasure in
- 25:30heaven. Give away your stuff. Store your wealth
- 25:34up there. Come follow me. Isn't that interesting?
- 25:37Come follow me. Sell your stuff. Come follow
- 25:40me. And when the young man heard this, he went
- 25:42away sorrowful for he had great possessions.
- 25:47Disobedience. Did he obey the commands? No. Why?
- 25:51Because he loved his value, which was in his
- 25:54back pocket, more than he loved God. Luke 21,
- 25:571 through 5. Jesus looked up and saw the rich
- 26:00putting their gifts, putting their money into
- 26:04the offering box. And he saw a poor widow put
- 26:07in two small copper coins. And he said, truly
- 26:10I tell you, this poor widow has put in more than
- 26:14all of them. For they all contributed out of
- 26:17their abundance, but she, out of her poverty,
- 26:20put in all she had to live on. So it does not
- 26:26matter if the government takes away your Medicaid.
- 26:30Doesn't matter if it takes away your Medicare.
- 26:34Doesn't matter if it takes away your SNAP. It
- 26:37doesn't matter. She gave everything she had.
- 26:40In other words, this is what she did. You know
- 26:42what? I'm really hungry today. I'm not going
- 26:44to go food shopping. I'm going to give my money
- 26:47to God. And Jesus notes that. She gave all she
- 26:51had to live on. You know what that means? I'll
- 26:54put it this way. Mark puts it this way. Mark
- 26:56chapter 12, verse 41 through 44. Now Jesus sat
- 26:59opposite the treasury. Interesting, it's his
- 27:02treasury. He was like sitting outside of his
- 27:04bank. He was like, that's kind of cool. And saw
- 27:07how the people put money in the treasury. And
- 27:10many who were rich put in much. Then one poor
- 27:13widow came and threw in two mites, which make
- 27:17a quadrants. So he called his disciples to himself
- 27:21and said, Assuredly, I say to you that this poor
- 27:24widow has put in more than all those who had
- 27:28given to the treasury. Everyone who put money
- 27:32in, all of that money doesn't compare in the
- 27:36economy of God, the value of this woman. Watch
- 27:40what it says. For they all put in out of their
- 27:44abundance. But she, out of her poverty, put in
- 27:49all that she had. Her whole livelihood. That's
- 27:55giving. God doesn't need your abundance. He wants
- 28:00all of you. That's what he wants. 2 Corinthians
- 28:04chapter 2. Now, I'm going to summarize this.
- 28:09Because it's a long chapter. So here's what happens.
- 28:12So Paul writes a letter to the Corinthians and
- 28:15says, hey, do you remember the church in Jerusalem?
- 28:20They need your money. And you made a vow that
- 28:23you would give a gift, financially support them
- 28:27so that they're not struggling. I'm calling you
- 28:30on your vow. So what he does is he sends men
- 28:33out there. To let them know ahead of time because
- 28:36he doesn't want to go there with the people of
- 28:38Macedonia and then find out that they weren't
- 28:41ready and that it makes him look bad. And so
- 28:44he's like, I want to do that. So I'd rather send
- 28:47some dues for you so you can get ready because
- 28:49we're going to come and we're going to collect
- 28:51the money that you promised. You made a vow to
- 28:53do it. Verse 6, 2 Corinthians 9, verse 6. The
- 28:59point is this. Whoever sows sparingly will also
- 29:03reap sparingly. Whoever sows bountifully will
- 29:05also reap bountifully. Each one must give as
- 29:08he's decided in the heart, not reluctantly or
- 29:10under compulsion. For God loves a cheerful giver.
- 29:14And God is able to make all grace abound to you
- 29:17so that having all sufficiency in all things
- 29:21at all times, you may abound in every good work
- 29:24as it is written. He, God, has distributed freely.
- 29:30God was generous to you. He has given to the
- 29:35poor. His righteousness endures forever. So he
- 29:38who supplies seed to the sower, God, and bread
- 29:41for food will supply and multiply your seed for
- 29:46sowing and increasing your harvest for your righteousness.
- 29:50In other words, whatever you give, God will give
- 29:53to take care of you. The point is, he calls them
- 29:56out to hold the vow that they made. They made
- 29:59a vow. This is what we're going to do. And Paul
- 30:02says it's time to pay. Look what it says, verse
- 30:0512. For the ministry of this service is not only
- 30:10supplying the needs of the saints, but also overflowing
- 30:14in many thanksgivings to God. Your giving supplies
- 30:18the needs of the saints and is a sacrifice of
- 30:22thanksgiving to God. That's what he means here.
- 30:25Why do I say that? You made a vow. You made a
- 30:29vow in October. Article 5, membership, section
- 30:323, membership responsibility. Members shall strive
- 30:36to attain the maturity in Christ by the increase
- 30:39in the knowledge of the Son of God to keep...
- 30:42The unity of the faith to speak the truth in
- 30:45love, to grow in every way into him who is the
- 30:48head so that the church builds itself up in love.
- 30:50Do you hear that? Your responsibility as a member
- 30:53is that you're going to commit to walking in
- 30:55obedience through the work of sanctification.
- 30:58That's what this means. You notice we deal with
- 31:00the issue of obedience first. That's the important
- 31:03part. They shall constantly strive to walk worthy
- 31:08of their high calling and seek control. Seek.
- 31:11control of every unholy disposition. The honor,
- 31:15stability, and effectiveness of the church is
- 31:18dependent upon the prayers, labors, and financial
- 31:23support of its members. All members, therefore,
- 31:27are expected to faithfully bear a just portion
- 31:30of the necessary expenses of the church and contribute
- 31:34regularly to their means in proportion as God
- 31:38has prospered you. Envelopes will be provided
- 31:41and online giving options are available for this
- 31:43purpose. You vowed that when you voted on this
- 31:47Constitution. That's your vow. It's not mine.
- 31:49It's mine because I took it. It's a vow you made.
- 31:52I'm holding you accountable to your vow. Here's
- 31:54the promise. You know what the promise was that
- 31:57we all made? Unanimously, mind you. It's called
- 32:01the budget. We promised to provide enough money
- 32:05for a budget of $306 ,000. Let's take Knowlton
- 32:09out. Let's get rid of Knowlton since they're
- 32:12not going to be here. It's actually $285 ,000.
- 32:16That's the budget promise you made. In order
- 32:18to meet that budget, we must be at $25 ,000 a
- 32:21month. We are getting $2 ,400 a week, $9 ,000
- 32:28a month. You know what that covers? Look in your
- 32:31budget. You'll know. We can pay our regular bills
- 32:36with that. But staff, not possible. So that's
- 32:40the promise you made. I'm holding you accountable
- 32:43to your promise. As a pastor, you know what?
- 32:46Most pastors avoid this stuff because they're
- 32:48afraid. I'm not. I've got to manage my house.
- 32:52I've got to manage this house. When things are
- 32:54rough at home, we have to have a discussion.
- 32:57Sometimes it gets a little, huh, it's about money,
- 33:00right? We don't want to always agree. But we've
- 33:03got to do what we've got to do because if we
- 33:05don't. The house folds. We can't do that. As
- 33:08a pastor, I'm not going to do that. I'm not going
- 33:10to do that. I'm not going to be like the rest
- 33:11of these false teachers out there begging you
- 33:13for money, trying to create some scheme. I'm
- 33:16going to hold you accountable to the things that
- 33:17God holds me accountable to. If he's going to
- 33:20hold me accountable to his word and being obedient
- 33:22and giving, I'm going to hold you accountable
- 33:23to it. Why should I have to be held at a higher
- 33:26standard than you? God holds us all at the same
- 33:28standard. And as a pastor, I have to rebuke you
- 33:31sometimes and also build you up. All scripture
- 33:34is... God breathed and is useful for? Rebuke,
- 33:37correction, teaching, and training in righteousness.
- 33:40So let's keep reading. Here's what R .C. Sproul
- 33:43has to say concerning this. God instituted in
- 33:46order to support the Levites who had no tribal
- 33:50allocation of land, the Levites were set apart
- 33:55to take care of the spiritual and educational
- 33:57responsibilities of the nation. And their work
- 34:01and physical necessities were paid for by the
- 34:04tithe. The labor is due his wages. So when you
- 34:08don't give like you promised you would give,
- 34:10it not only affects our ability to preach and
- 34:13proclaim the gospel, it affects the livelihood
- 34:16of the pastors. Not good. Under the new covenant.
- 34:21The tithe, that's in Numbers 18. Under the new
- 34:25covenant, the tithe continues to support the
- 34:27work of the building up of the people in the
- 34:29truth of God and reaching sinners with the gospel.
- 34:32Christ works through churches, seminaries, parachurch
- 34:36organizations, missionaries, and many others
- 34:39to build and grow his kingdom. Guess who will
- 34:43be affected if we don't give? All the missionaries
- 34:47we have. Most important investment. we can ever
- 34:51make is in the kingdom of God because it has
- 34:54eternal returns. Don't store up treasures on
- 34:57earth, store up treasures in heaven. Your return,
- 35:01eternal return, is greater than anything any
- 35:04man could ever give you. These returns, quote
- 35:07unquote, these returns are not just for us, but
- 35:10also for our family, our children, and our grandchildren.
- 35:14This generation of Christians must invest in
- 35:18the things of God for the sake of the next generation.
- 35:21If you don't do it now, your children won't do
- 35:24it. And you wonder why churches are closing and
- 35:27why other churches are opening. Because they
- 35:30have marketing schemes. Know what their marketing
- 35:32scheme is? Minister to the gays. Because they're
- 35:35loaded. Give them a place where they feel accepted
- 35:39to be exactly as they want to be. Never really
- 35:42dealing with the condition of the heart. Letting
- 35:44them die in their sin. That's a marketing scheme.
- 35:47Not really dealing with the spiritual reality
- 35:49of the eternity. They're dying without Christ,
- 35:53thinking they're going to heaven because they
- 35:54go to a church. This article is written by R
- 35:58.C. Sproul in 2024 at Ligonier .org. Articles,
- 36:03stewardship, tithing, and giving. So why do I
- 36:07share this? Because eventually all of this will
- 36:11affect our ability to do ministry. And it affects
- 36:14people. And our church needs to get to the next
- 36:16place it needs to be. I don't think God's closing
- 36:19our doors. Honestly. You know what I think God
- 36:22is doing? He's disciplining us. He's turning
- 36:26our heart toward him. Because the world is changing.
- 36:30Changing drastically, very fast. Everyone else
- 36:34will fold. But if we love God. and are obedient
- 36:37to him, and do what his word says, we will survive
- 36:42and last. That's what I think he's doing, okay?
- 36:46So that's my challenge to you. Very frank, very
- 36:50straightforward, very to the point. I hope and
- 36:53pray it hit on the right heart, and I didn't
- 36:57come out condemning because that wasn't my goal,
- 36:59but I did want to come out and rebuke and deal
- 37:02and love you. If I did not love you, I would
- 37:06have lied to you and just kept on doing our same
- 37:08thing. It's okay. But that's not the kind of
- 37:11guy I am, nor the pastor I am. Okay? So let's
- 37:15lock arm in arm, and let's continue working for
- 37:18the kingdom of God, seeking first his kingdom.
- 37:20God will take care of us, and he will take care
- 37:23of you personally. Stop worrying about it. Trust
- 37:27him. He will do it. And there are testimonies
- 37:30upon testimonies, which we'll probably share
- 37:32next week. Okay? Do a little bit of testimony
- 37:35time next week on how God has done great things
- 37:38through his word. Okay? All right. I love you.
- 37:42Thank you. Thank you. It's a rebuke. It's a correction.
- 37:46It's a training. I mean, it's a teaching. Now,
- 37:48go train. Go practice. Follow the word of God.
- 37:51You'll be good. Trust me. Trust him. Don't trust
- 37:54me. I shouldn't have said trust me. Trust God.
- 38:00All right. Father, I want to thank you so much
- 38:01for your goodness and faithfulness to you. Be
- 38:03honor and glory forever in Jesus' name. Amen.
