- 0:23chickens. Hey everybody.
- 0:29Good morning from the chicken coop.
- 0:30Whoop. So how many of you have had to
- 0:32take a self evaluation before? So you work for a company and
- 0:37they ask you to critique yourself, basically that you're
- 0:39going to have a review with someone and they say, hey before
- 0:43you do that, why don't you give us your version of what you
- 0:46think is the case? Because this is Corporate jargon
- 0:50to see how far off you are from where they are and is this a
- 0:56useful tool? So very interesting thing came
- 0:59up this week. I have a client who runs a very
- 1:03large department and her responsibility is to go in and
- 1:07give reviews two teams and they come back to her first with
- 1:12their self reviews. And often we have conversations
- 1:16about what people say in their self reviews because her version
- 1:21of the world that they're giving her is her version is completely
- 1:25different than their version of the world and we often sit there
- 1:29and debate how Did they come to this conclusion?
- 1:32Now, most people who are in this type of role that she's in
- 1:37probably are not doing the or making the effort that she is
- 1:41making to try to see from the other person's point of view
- 1:44often times, you know, they already have their decision
- 1:48made. They are not going to try to dig
- 1:50in and say, hey, let me take a look at this.
- 1:52And say, what is the point that this person is trying to make?
- 1:55What is their version of how this is going down?
- 1:58But but my client has been getting cold.
- 2:00In for a long, long time. And she is someone who's
- 2:05extremely thoughtful and she would want someone to do that
- 2:08for her. Therefore she is doing that for
- 2:11them because she wants to be thoughtful and she wants to be
- 2:13able to give them, you know, solid answers as to why she
- 2:19can't maybe say what they want to say.
- 2:21But as we're going through this process, we're talking about the
- 2:26ability to be able to self assess and how critical that at
- 2:30is to well-being. Also, we're talking about how,
- 2:34you know, companies even schools.
- 2:36Now, often don't grade on grades.
- 2:38They will say I grew up at a time when you had to get a
- 2:41grade, it was all predicated the letter was predicated on the
- 2:44numbers but a lot of that's gone now and they'll say, you know,
- 2:49meeting the standards meets at or exceeds expectations and
- 2:54you're falling into categories, based on that, which is
- 2:58incredibly frustrating when giving Feedback.
- 3:01Because if you are meeting expectations or meeting and
- 3:05exceeding expectations, there's a lot of ambiguity in those
- 3:09words. So as we're going through all of
- 3:12this, we're talking about how people self-assess and, you
- 3:17know, obviously I spend a lot of time in this Arena.
- 3:20So it's very easy for me to talk about it.
- 3:22And one of the challenges that I think people have in
- 3:25self-assessment is one being honest with themselves about
- 3:29really their arm. Out of effort and how we
- 3:32constantly tend to have a false sense of our efforts in, in the
- 3:40scope of what other people are seeing.
- 3:41So what I mean by that is we might be overwhelmed by things
- 3:45but other people don't see that one.
- 3:48It could be because we're not communicating it to because
- 3:51we're doing things behind the scenes that are unrecognizable,
- 3:54which is a really important thing and that and that's not
- 3:58just in work that's across the board.
- 4:00There are things that are unrecognizable even in your
- 4:03household. How many times anybody who has
- 4:05children will know how many times kids are like, hey, how
- 4:09come we don't have this in the refrigerator?
- 4:10Or how come we don't have. I don't my clothes aren't clean
- 4:13and blah blah blah because somebody is doing laundry in the
- 4:16house and it goes unnoticed or somebody's buying food and just
- 4:21constantly stalking the house and it goes unnoticed.
- 4:24So this level of self assessment is very, very hard.
- 4:30For people and my big thing with this is you cannot self assess
- 4:35yourself if you are not tracking yourself and why is this all
- 4:40important to you guys because I'm telling you right now, we
- 4:44are almost halfway through this year.
- 4:46We're 141 days into the year right now.
- 4:49I know that because of the podcast and if if you are not on
- 4:54track to be doing the things that you want to be doing and
- 4:58getting to the place, you Want to be getting yourself reading
- 5:02the number of books taking the number of vacations.
- 5:06It doesn't matter what the subject is, if you are not
- 5:09progressing, then nine times out of ten, a key component of that
- 5:15is, you are not tracking your wins and you're not seeing where
- 5:21you need to course-correct. So, for instance, every day I've
- 5:25told you guys this before but I will repeat it just to make sure
- 5:29I write down in a journal. Not exactly what I accomplished.
- 5:32Not my calendar of what I'm supposed to be doing.
- 5:36I write it in a journal because I want to know every day, I want
- 5:40to be able to go back. It's a daily planner Journal.
- 5:42I have happened to love passion planners, so it's a passion
- 5:45planner. And it is for me, it is the
- 5:49Saving Grace because I can look back, and I can say, oh, wait,
- 5:52look what I did. Okay.
- 5:53Yeah. So if somebody said to me, can
- 5:55you self assess yourself and tell us what, you know, where
- 5:59you think your Expectations where you think you're exceeding
- 6:02expectations. Any of that, I could do it in a
- 6:05heartbeat and I wouldn't have to reinvent the wheel.
- 6:08I wouldn't have to think about it and more importantly, I
- 6:10wouldn't have to do it from a place of resentment or
- 6:13irritation or anything else. I could just do it, it would
- 6:16just be matters of fact at that point in time because I even
- 6:19color code stuff. So I will tell you if you are
- 6:23not tracking this stuff and we are 141 days into the year.
- 6:28I highly suggest you do because When we get through this halfway
- 6:31point of the year, then people start to go.
- 6:33Oh wow, Summer's here. And so I'm going to take this
- 6:35off but I didn't get this done better than Tada.
- 6:38So before summer gets here, before you want to spend time,
- 6:42doing, whatever it is that you do in the summer, please do
- 6:46yourself this gift, give yourself this gift of going out
- 6:50and starting this process really, give yourself a
- 6:52self-assessment now, so that you can go back and you can say with
- 6:57confidence, you know it, because if somebody else I was doing it
- 7:01and this is a game that I would love for you guys to play with
- 7:04yourself. Say okay, I'm going to do it for
- 7:06myself. I'm going to give myself the
- 7:07self-assessment and then if someone else was watching me,
- 7:11what would they think? Because if you're self-employed,
- 7:13if you're a business owner, you have to ask the questions and
- 7:17you have to do it even though someone's not there.
- 7:19Now, again, these only work when you're being really honest with
- 7:24yourself. Because as I was telling you, my
- 7:25client was struggling to make sure that this person was able
- 7:28to get the feedback that they needed to.
- 7:30To get in order to jump to the next level and that meant some
- 7:33critical things. So, you know, don't don't be
- 7:38disrupted by having to do something like that.
- 7:41Just be like, okay, what are the things I need to convey?
- 7:44And how honestly, can I convey them through the framework?
- 7:47That this person can hear it. So, keep all of that in mind.
- 7:51Do a self-assessment for yourself.
- 7:52If you are off track, get your heinie back on track because
- 7:56you're not going to feel good going into the summer know when
- 7:58you blew off a bunch of stuff. Of me.
- 8:00I'm doing the same thing right now with myself, making sure
- 8:03that by that time, that the end of the month comes, I have a
- 8:07bunch of stuff done and by the end of June, I have even more.
- 8:11I have a huge thing coming up by the end of June.
- 8:13So I am on task. So do yourself the favor.
- 8:18Catch yourself ahead of time. All right?
- 8:19My friends little long today, but I hope it was helpful and I
- 8:23will see you all tomorrow. I hope you all have a blessed
- 8:25day. Bye.
