- 0:55SPEAKER_05: Hockey is getting started.
- 0:57SPEAKER_05: It's official.
- 0:59SPEAKER_05: All the talk over the summer about what could be, should be, might be, is finally taking cold.
- 1:08SPEAKER_05: Uh so now it's not just uh possibilities, it's what's actually happened on the ice, happening on the ice.
- 1:16SPEAKER_05: And so it's a great time to be a hockey fan.
- 1:18SPEAKER_05: And it's October.
- 1:20SPEAKER_07: Best month of the year for sports, followed by a close second with April.
- 1:24SPEAKER_07: But you've got the NHL starting, you know, for guys like Grant.
- 1:29SPEAKER_07: You've got the Major League Baseball playoffs starting, which used to be a normal thing here in this town.
- 1:33SPEAKER_07: How about the Phillies?
- 1:34SPEAKER_07: Exactly.
- 1:35SPEAKER_07: Going down on the wire.
- 1:36SPEAKER_07: Great.
- 1:36SPEAKER_07: Talk about it.
- 1:37SPEAKER_07: You've got NFL, college football is already five weeks in.
- 1:42SPEAKER_07: By the you know, I look at October as kind of like that's the that's the crucible of sports.
- 1:47SPEAKER_05: Ooh, the crucible.
- 1:49SPEAKER_05: I like that word.
- 1:49SPEAKER_05: You know what?
- 1:50SPEAKER_05: I I would say it's a good time to take PTO.
- 1:53SPEAKER_06: Yes.
- 1:53SPEAKER_05: It's a great time to take PTO, maybe on a Friday or a Monday.
- 1:57SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 1:57SPEAKER_05: So you can like sandwich your weekend, you know, and make the most of it.
- 2:01SPEAKER_05: But it's a great time to be a sports fan.
- 2:03SPEAKER_07: I want to start off apologizing to our viewers on YouTube as we go with the 2018 technology of our webcam today.
- 2:11SPEAKER_07: Got a little bit of a halo effect as we have some studio issues.
- 2:15SPEAKER_07: So we're uh we're a little cozy here at the bar as we saddle up, but uh hey, we just gotta, you know, some power through.
- 2:23SPEAKER_07: I saw this meme.
- 2:24SPEAKER_07: It was going through all the generations through the baby boomers and the Gen Z's and the millennials, and it gets to Gen X and it just says, just do your job.
- 2:33SPEAKER_07: That's what we're doing here.
- 2:34SPEAKER_07: We're just doing our job, we're getting things done.
- 2:36SPEAKER_05: Yeah, so uh next week we'll be better for sure.
- 2:39SPEAKER_05: And uh uh, but we've got a great uh extension of last week.
- 2:44SPEAKER_07: Speak before we could start speaking of our residential Gen Z.
- 2:47SPEAKER_07: Is he a Gen Z?
- 2:48SPEAKER_07: I think he's a Gen Z.
- 2:49SPEAKER_07: What happened with Sekman and Ledou hockey?
- 2:53SPEAKER_07: What happened?
- 2:55SPEAKER_07: I don't know what it happened was Grant decided not to come out.
- 2:58SPEAKER_04: He's hiding, right?
- 2:59SPEAKER_04: I couldn't I couldn't add myself, it wouldn't let me.
- 3:02SPEAKER_04: Um I don't know the score.
- 3:04SPEAKER_04: What happened?
- 3:05SPEAKER_04: So let me know what happened with the school done.
- 3:09SPEAKER_07: Let me set the stage.
- 3:10SPEAKER_07: Let me set the stage, let me set the stage for you.
- 3:13SPEAKER_07: All right, first game of the year, you know, Ledou's got a young team.
- 3:17SPEAKER_07: You know, Ledou's got a young team.
- 3:18SPEAKER_07: I would say we, but I'm not a player, I'm a coach.
- 3:20SPEAKER_07: So Ledu's got a young, young team.
- 3:23SPEAKER_07: And uh, you know, puck drops.
- 3:26SPEAKER_07: We're getting up and down the ice pretty well, but it's just not bouncing our way.
- 3:30SPEAKER_07: We go down three nothing after the first period.
- 3:32SPEAKER_07: Second period.
- 3:33SPEAKER_07: No, it's three nothing.
- 3:35SPEAKER_07: Three nothing after the period.
- 3:38SPEAKER_07: The Jaguars jumped all over, jumped all and then, and then we take a penalty, we kill the penalty, wow, we come out, we're led our it's like boom.
- 3:54SPEAKER_07: Number 12.
- 3:55SPEAKER_07: Goal.
- 3:55SPEAKER_07: 3-1.
- 3:56SPEAKER_07: Okay.
- 3:57SPEAKER_07: Then we give up a goal to 4-1.
- 3:58SPEAKER_07: So we've got this three-goal deficit, but does do the Ladou Rams give up?
- 4:03SPEAKER_07: No, they do not.
- 4:04SPEAKER_07: Spoiler alert, no, they don't.
- 4:06SPEAKER_07: Three unanswered goals to tie the game at 4-4.
- 4:10SPEAKER_07: Heading into the third.
- 4:13SPEAKER_07: We go ahead.
- 4:15SPEAKER_07: We, I'm sorry, I'm a I I'm not a player.
- 4:18SPEAKER_07: We go, but we go ahead.
- 4:20SPEAKER_07: 5-4.
- 4:21SPEAKER_07: The place is jumping.
- 4:22SPEAKER_07: Cayman Rink at Maryville Ice Center is just going crazy.
- 4:26SPEAKER_07: Just crazy.
- 4:27SPEAKER_07: The Hartwig Timan Rink is just going crazy.
- 4:30SPEAKER_07: Like, you know, pandemonium.
- 4:33SPEAKER_07: Sekman with a minute left.
- 4:37SPEAKER_07: Ties it up 5-5.
- 4:41SPEAKER_07: And I'm like, well, there's no overtime in this, so we're gonna end up, you know, having a tie.
- 4:45SPEAKER_07: And you know what they should do.
- 4:46SPEAKER_04: If you tell all this story for a tie, I'm gonna be very mad at you.
- 4:50SPEAKER_07: 40 seconds left.
- 4:53SPEAKER_07: 40 seconds left! Wow.
- 4:56SPEAKER_07: 40 seconds left.
- 4:57SPEAKER_07: The game winner called by yours, truly.
- 5:01SPEAKER_07: Henry Brockman senior at Ledou.
- 5:04SPEAKER_07: Up and down game.
- 5:05SPEAKER_07: I go to him halfway through and said, You're gonna hit the game winner.
- 5:08SPEAKER_07: Not a big deal.
- 5:09SPEAKER_07: Game GWG.
- 5:11SPEAKER_07: Ledou leaves with a victory.
- 5:13SPEAKER_04: Hey.
- 5:13SPEAKER_07: Shout out Rams.
- 5:15SPEAKER_04: This is just preseason, isn't it?
- 5:17SPEAKER_05: Oh, that's a great comeback.
- 5:19SPEAKER_05: Great comeback.
- 5:20SPEAKER_05: This is a great comeback.
- 5:22SPEAKER_04: You know, you're testing new things out.
- 5:23SPEAKER_04: The starters, they went up for two shades.
- 5:26SPEAKER_04: It was just preseason.
- 5:27SPEAKER_04: Well done, Grant.
- 5:28SPEAKER_04: Well done.
- 5:29SPEAKER_04: The game that mattered was Friday night.
- 5:31SPEAKER_04: Second played that team from up north, the Fox Warriors.
- 5:34SPEAKER_07: Oh yeah, yeah.
- 5:36SPEAKER_07: Straight victories for the Jaguars.
- 5:40SPEAKER_07: When's the last time anyone had a six straight winning streak in that one?
- 5:43SPEAKER_04: Uh Fox won 18 years in a row, I believe.
- 5:47SPEAKER_04: Okay.
- 5:47SPEAKER_04: Oh no, 14.
- 5:49SPEAKER_07: How many times did you beat him?
- 5:52SPEAKER_04: Oh.
- 5:56SPEAKER_07: Hey, we're living in the now.
- 5:57SPEAKER_07: We're not living in the glory days.
- 5:58SPEAKER_04: I never lost to in basketball or football or baseball, though.
- 6:01SPEAKER_07: So yeah, nobody remembers.
- 6:04SPEAKER_05: Thank you for uh for highlighting that.
- 6:07SPEAKER_05: That that was fantastic because we had to uh poke the bear.
- 6:10SPEAKER_05: Yes, we're gonna bear.
- 6:11SPEAKER_05: The Sekman Jack before we got into uh this week's topic, which is an extension of last week's topic, which is uh the ASU uh player Matthew Mayek, who uh is a St.
- 6:25SPEAKER_05: Louis Blues draftee prospect.
- 6:29SPEAKER_05: And uh you may have heard uh was working out at the ASU facility and uh uh was in a workout and ultimately collapsed and is in the hospital right now.
- 6:43SPEAKER_05: And uh we're going to pair two different mental health uh experts uh and provide a perspective on this.
- 6:53SPEAKER_05: Uh and uh but let's introduce uh Jenty uh Jenny Hoffman, who is gonna provide her perspective on this.
- 7:01SPEAKER_05: And so, Jenny, welcome to the show.
- 7:03SPEAKER_05: I I love your I love your uh top.
- 7:06SPEAKER_05: Tell us a little bit about it and uh why you picked it up.
- 7:09SPEAKER_01: Well, I wore my favorite hockey mom top, you know, year to year, you're uh at least in my experience, you're changing teams.
- 7:18SPEAKER_01: So I wanted to make sure I didn't represent a specific team tonight, cheering for all the teams, uh, all the clubs, and um, you know, had a great experience across St.
- 7:29SPEAKER_01: Louis.
- 7:29SPEAKER_01: And as I'm my kid's heading into his, you know, graduating year, just reminiscing about the many wonderful coaches and experiences we've had as a family in St.
- 7:41SPEAKER_01: Louis.
- 7:41SPEAKER_05: How are you feeling about that?
- 7:43SPEAKER_05: Headed into the final year.
- 7:45SPEAKER_05: You're gonna seize the day, you're gonna be at all the moments, but how are you feeling about that in your house?
- 7:51SPEAKER_05: Having uh uh Charlie, your goalie, uh, play out his senior year and then exit and onward to uh uh plus 18-year-old things.
- 8:01SPEAKER_05: How's that working in the house?
- 8:03SPEAKER_01: So my husband and I are just trying to live, live it up with our kid and go to as many of the games as we possibly can.
- 8:13SPEAKER_01: So historically, only one of us traveled with him, but this year we decided we're both gonna go whenever we can and um have made some changes at work so I can be at any CBC game this year.
- 8:29SPEAKER_01: You know, I'm laughing because you know we don't have the schedule yet, but if they tell me to be there tomorrow, I'll be there tomorrow.
- 8:35SPEAKER_05: Well, Jenny, we're joking about uh hockey uh isms and all the things we're gonna be at, but outside of your hockey life, you are a mental health professional.
- 8:46SPEAKER_05: So tell the audience a little bit about your background, where you spend your time, and how you help uh teens and youth adults uh on an ongoing basis.
- 8:58SPEAKER_01: So I am a therapist in the community and own a practice called Therapy and Wellness Collective, and we serve uh people as young as five uh through adults.
- 9:08SPEAKER_01: And as a therapist myself, I work with people experiencing everything from anxiety to depression, and I also work with high-performing athletes, um, which would include many of our club hockey players that I think you're you know you all are talking about here.
- 9:27SPEAKER_05: Well, fantastic.
- 9:29SPEAKER_05: Well, yeah, so happy to have you on, and we're talking about Matthew Mayek and this event that happened at ASU, a uh in an organization that way back in the day was just an ACHA organization, right, Coach?
- 9:46SPEAKER_07: Yeah, so ASU, um, like a lot of the newer programs, has uh has its foundations in playing in the uh American Collegiate Hockey Association, similar to Linda Wood, Maryville, uh, Oklahoma State, Mizzou.
- 10:00SPEAKER_07: Um, there's a huge uh network of schools that have club hockey, and over the past, I would say, uh 20 years, at least since I played, um, it has gotten much more structured and competitive.
- 10:12SPEAKER_07: ASU has now been a Division I NCAA program, I believe, for almost a decade.
- 10:18SPEAKER_07: Um, they're coached by a former goaltender for their ACHA program.
- 10:22SPEAKER_07: Oh, and you know, um, I think that uh, you know, Jenny, as we have um kind of talked to other folks within the hockey community, um, be it coaches or contributors on in coaching, from a coaching perspective, we really wanted to talk with mental health professionals to talk about not just the the event itself that happened, but really the culture surrounding it.
- 10:48SPEAKER_07: Um you know, one of the things that we mentioned last week is, you know, as a coach, you know, oftentimes you are caught in this like between these two worlds of what you were, how you were coached and how you grew up.
- 11:02SPEAKER_07: And there's there are different generational gaps, but there's also we know a lot more about science, we know a lot more about nutrition and health, and mental health is becoming such a you know, I don't even know what we shouldn't even call it mental health, we should just call it health.
- 11:14SPEAKER_07: It's just health.
- 11:16SPEAKER_07: Um, but tell us a little bit, you know, I I'm sure you've read the article and you have some opinions about it.
- 11:22SPEAKER_07: Um, would love to first talk about a healthy culture that a coach can help drive and support for his or her athletes.
- 11:33SPEAKER_01: Well, um I think as we're talking about healthy culture, first to just say, you know, what's happened out in Arizona is every hockey family's worst nightmare.
- 11:43SPEAKER_01: And so I think it's really, you know, great that we're we're highlighting this issue and um you know, to speak to team culture.
- 11:51SPEAKER_01: Jared, you actually gave an example just a few minutes ago about how you whispered in that hockey player's ear, you're gonna score the winning goal.
- 12:00SPEAKER_01: And you know, what you did was help that player visualize his success.
- 12:06SPEAKER_01: And I imagine that you do that for all of your players, and that's what coaches need to be doing.
- 12:12SPEAKER_01: They need to help players think about um what success looks like to actually use their senses to feel it and smell it and hear it and all of that when they're in practice, so that when they get out in that big game and those fans are screaming in that stadium, that they're you know able to focus on the coach and focus on the teammates on the ice to have that success.
- 12:41SPEAKER_07: You know, and and I appreciate that, you know, it's uh you don't learn that on day one of coaching, it takes time to understand how to communicate.
- 12:50SPEAKER_07: Um it has been reported, like you know, and in and we we actually talked to a coach who um was an acquaintance of the coach at ASU last week.
- 13:01SPEAKER_07: And we all want to believe that everyone is whether they're a professional coach, whether they're uh you know a semi-professional or a volunteer coach, they're doing it because they love the game and they love to instruct and to teach and to mold.
- 13:16SPEAKER_07: But it's been reported that this coach did everything um uh from calling players out and calling them soft, hanging pictures of Charmin toilet paper in locker rooms.
- 13:27SPEAKER_07: There is a one of the worst things just historically you can call a hockey player is soft.
- 13:33SPEAKER_07: I think many athletes, especially if they're in a very physical, you know, body contact type sport, feel that that is one of the worst things you can do.
- 13:41SPEAKER_07: Um as a mental health coach, as somebody who is working, you know, in intimate settings with with athletes to try and get them to one, feel confident and good about themselves.
- 13:55SPEAKER_07: What does that do?
- 13:57SPEAKER_07: And and how is is there really any positive aspect to to that, in your opinion?
- 14:03SPEAKER_01: So, in my opinion, I can't really think of any positive aspect to that as a soft, yeah.
- 14:11SPEAKER_01: So, yeah, thanks for that, guys.
- 14:15SPEAKER_01: I think some of us would consider it verbal abuse.
- 14:20SPEAKER_01: Um it's if you know, depending on the name calling, but you're actually stifling the athlete's performance when you when you call them names, um, because you're creating a culture of fear.
- 14:32SPEAKER_01: And you want your athlete in practice, especially to feel like this is the place where I can make mistakes.
- 14:39SPEAKER_01: This is the place where I can try different things out and um learn from it and build off that and become a better athlete.
- 14:47SPEAKER_01: And if I'm afraid that I'm gonna go in the locker room and the coach is gonna call me names, or another player is gonna call me names when I hit the locker room, then I've stifled that um culture of you know trying new things and building that resilience in my players.
- 15:03SPEAKER_01: So um, you know, and and you might actually have people quit if you do it enough.
- 15:10SPEAKER_07: So as a coach, you know, you part of being a coach is sometimes you have to give um hard feedback.
- 15:19SPEAKER_07: And if I'm watching my team and I'm noticing they're playing soft, what are ways that I can by soft, it's just we weren't as as tough as we normally are, or we weren't battling as hard as we could.
- 15:31SPEAKER_07: How do you express that?
- 15:32SPEAKER_07: Um, especially when your go-to is like they called me soft when I was a kid, you know.
- 15:36SPEAKER_07: But how do how do you express that as a coach?
- 15:38SPEAKER_07: What's a good what's a good tip?
- 15:40SPEAKER_01: Yeah, so to your point about what you experience as a kid, I would just say, you know, we need to stop this cycle of abuse.
- 15:47SPEAKER_01: So, you know, I experienced it too as an athlete.
- 15:50SPEAKER_01: I had, you know, the softball coach who swore at us the whole game, and it doesn't mean that I can go out and you know swear at kids.
- 15:59SPEAKER_01: Um, so how to stop it?
- 16:02SPEAKER_01: I think you stop practice, and depending on what you're up to, um, and it's okay to say this is not the level that we can compete at, and you say it to the entire team, not to one kid, but to the entire team.
- 16:17SPEAKER_01: Um, I also think this is a great place to incorporate video because it can be helpful for a player to see another player not performing to their ability because then you're not attacking that kid, you're showing them, hey, you know, um, McDavid didn't play so hot tonight.
- 16:36SPEAKER_01: Let's watch and see what he was doing, um, so that you can see how you can elevate yourself in your own play.
- 16:44SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 16:45SPEAKER_05: I I love what you just said.
- 16:46SPEAKER_05: So I what I would add on to that is uh Jenny, would it be helpful to show both like the Connor McDavid making um a mistake and in uh in quotations or maybe exhibiting that kind of play, but then also showing success because you want to show a roadmap, you want to to your uh intro when you were uh talking about Jared and uh him being a hockey whisperer.
- 17:17SPEAKER_07: Thanks for the applause, by the way, Grant.
- 17:19SPEAKER_07: That was a perfect moment.
- 17:20SPEAKER_07: Nope, no point.
- 17:22SPEAKER_05: Uh so so so maybe a little bit of humility that these NHL players actually make mistakes and like you, they screw up every single day.
- 17:33SPEAKER_05: But then also uh what success looks like.
- 17:37SPEAKER_05: So kind of a before and after.
- 17:39SPEAKER_05: Am I uh am I on track there?
- 17:42SPEAKER_01: I think that's helpful.
- 17:43SPEAKER_01: And then, you know, for anybody out there who has worked with kids before, like the sandwich method, when you're gonna provide some constructive feedback, and notice I didn't say calling a kid soft or um maybe using a harsher word that I won't say on the podcast, you know, providing a something you did well, then something you can work on, and then something you did well, or that you're seeing in the player that you like because you put that kind of negative thing in the middle, it's like a feedback sandwich, and it can be easier for a person to digest that.
- 18:18SPEAKER_06: I call those burillos, taste better.
- 18:25SPEAKER_06: I've got 11-year-olds too, so Jenny.
- 18:30SPEAKER_05: You've uh outside of being in the mental health profession, uh, you you have a player, you have a child that's involved in hockey who plays goalie and plays at a high level.
- 18:42SPEAKER_05: So you know this.
- 18:43SPEAKER_05: Uh hockey prizes toughness and and never quitting.
- 18:48SPEAKER_05: I feel like that's kind of uh uh uh a component of our sport, but I would say that's a component of basically any kind of competitive sports.
- 18:59SPEAKER_05: How does this culture make it harder for a player to say, I'm not okay during a workout?
- 19:07SPEAKER_05: So if you if you read the article, uh for the listeners out there, if you didn't, that's okay.
- 19:14SPEAKER_05: Uh, but but Matthew Mayek was in a workout and a pretty high-intensity workout delivered by uh former Green Beret, and uh and it was pretty intensive.
- 19:25SPEAKER_05: I think it was a 75-minute workout, so it wasn't hours and hours, but still high intensity.
- 19:32SPEAKER_05: Um how do you how do you how does that how does the hockey culture make it hard for these players to say, you know what, this is too much?
- 19:43SPEAKER_01: Well, I I'm not an expert on Arizona heat.
- 19:47SPEAKER_01: I do understand that it was the first workout of the season in the desert.
- 19:51SPEAKER_01: And so acclimating, I'll just say this in general.
- 19:54SPEAKER_01: I think acclimating your athletes to the expectations of the workouts is key and building them up.
- 20:01SPEAKER_01: So um maybe coaches don't assume on day one that your athletes are in shape enough to handle a certain workout.
- 20:10SPEAKER_01: Um, you know, like it, for example, like today my athlete here said, you know, he works out at Afton a couple days a week, and this isn't a critique, it's just the ice is hotter there.
- 20:21SPEAKER_01: And so to work out on the ice there takes a different type of, you guys are smiling, maybe not.
- 20:27SPEAKER_01: Like he it sounds like it takes a different type of fitness to work out, you know, with the lack of air conditioning perhaps on a hot day versus Maryville, where it might be colder.
- 20:38SPEAKER_01: Um, and I point that out because I think coaches need to think about that and train their athletes for all those conditions.
- 20:45SPEAKER_01: Um, because you know, when you're on a road trip, you never know.
- 20:48SPEAKER_01: Um, but to your larger question about toughness and never quitting, um, I think that it's something that when players are younger, um it's okay to say, like, you know, I'm gonna throw up coach.
- 21:04SPEAKER_01: It I need to stop.
- 21:06SPEAKER_01: And and for coaches to know, like, that might be the line.
- 21:10SPEAKER_01: Um, not denying athletes water.
- 21:14SPEAKER_01: Um, you know, I'm pretty sure that's a pretty clear rule for you know, safe sport that an athlete needs to have access to water.
- 21:22SPEAKER_05: Um well, so so to piggyback on that, um, is it should coaches uh out there be saying, uh, look, if you're having a hard time, uh raise your hand or uh signal in some way, or what can we be doing as a community better to prevent these kinds of things, both to create an environment as coaches, but also for players to take some responsibility on their own to say, look, I know I'm in a competitive environment, but I also need to uh be able to signal to my coaches and my Leaders out there that I'm having a hard time without being shamed.
- 22:06SPEAKER_01: Two-part question.
- 22:07SPEAKER_01: I think when they're young, when they're starting in the sport, we need to help athletes learn how to say, This is how my body's feeling.
- 22:16SPEAKER_01: It's a self-advocacy, it's an awareness of how you know how the body works, right?
- 22:22SPEAKER_01: Because you know, that first workout where you're doing like a two-a-day, and maybe you went to an intensive camp during the summer, you might be seven, eight years old and experiencing your first muscle soreness and have no words for that.
- 22:36SPEAKER_01: So we need to help young athletes understand I think your abs are sore.
- 22:42SPEAKER_01: This is what this is, right?
- 22:44SPEAKER_01: So that they can then express, you know, this is soreness versus this is pain, um, so that they can recognize that in their body.
- 22:53SPEAKER_01: Um, with coaches, I think it's important for you know the larger hockey community to say to coaches, you know, if a kid needs to get off the ice because they're in pain, we need to say okay.
- 23:08SPEAKER_01: Um and it and it shouldn't be like mom needs to run from the stands to pull their kid off the ice, because I think that is really shaming for the kid.
- 23:20SPEAKER_01: Um, we got to catch it before then.
- 23:22SPEAKER_07: Yeah, I think it goes hand in hand in in all of sports, particularly hockey, where we've become very aware of concussions.
- 23:29SPEAKER_07: And it's a very, you know, it's kind of not just because it's an injury that affects the brain, and we we attribute mental health with obviously brain health, but I we are getting better at this, I believe, as a as a society, as a sports, you know, or sports organizations.
- 23:48SPEAKER_07: My biggest issue with all of this, and I've said this on uh last week as well, is how does this happen in 2026?
- 23:55SPEAKER_07: How do we have a situation with a billion-dollar university, um, with a spotlight on a program, with a coach who's bringing in a green beret to hockey's tough, but it you're not simulating war.
- 24:12SPEAKER_07: I mean, you just aren't.
- 24:13SPEAKER_07: And we've seen in the past, you know, players, whether it's football or lacrosse or other sports have collapsed and died because of heat exposure, heat exhaustion.
- 24:22SPEAKER_07: How does this happen?
- 24:24SPEAKER_07: This this feels to me it's more um uh endemic of the culture at ASU.
- 24:30SPEAKER_07: And and I also will go out on a limb and say that this is not a corner case.
- 24:35SPEAKER_07: There are plenty, I mean, we've got a coach in the NHL right now who is going to be making his debut tonight in Edmonton or in Vancouver for Edmonton that is a known uh, I would say, abuser.
- 24:50SPEAKER_07: There's no other way to put it.
- 24:51SPEAKER_07: So, how does this happen?
- 24:52SPEAKER_07: Like what, you know, as coaches, we have to set a tone, I believe, for the you know, coaches don't score goals, they've never won a game on the ice, but they set the tone.
- 25:01SPEAKER_07: So, how how do we teach coaches who don't know any better um to evolve?
- 25:09SPEAKER_07: Or do we find different coaches?
- 25:12SPEAKER_05: How do we yeah, how do we develop coaches just like we develop players around mental health to get smarter around these things?
- 25:21SPEAKER_01: Well, I think we need to train our coaches better.
- 25:23SPEAKER_01: I think that's what you're getting at, Jared, is that you know, just I like the meeting before the season starts, we need to have coaches' meetings where coaches need to learn about just this.
- 25:35SPEAKER_01: And I think the approach is your team is actually going to perform better if you leave this cycle of abuse behind.
- 25:44SPEAKER_01: Um it's a it's a fact.
- 25:48SPEAKER_01: They will they will do better.
- 25:50SPEAKER_01: Um, and we'll have fewer kids leave the club, which will benefit local clubs.
- 25:55SPEAKER_05: Um that's that's the second time you've mentioned that, and I want to just hop on that for a second because I kind of feel like we haven't talked about it, and I feel like that's a consequence you're saying of this kind of behavior is that you actually will have players that will leave.
- 26:13SPEAKER_05: They will choose to not only stay, you know, not just stay in the environment, deal with it, or advocate for themselves, you'll have a subset of players that'll simply leave.
- 26:24SPEAKER_05: Quite is that right?
- 26:26SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 26:27SPEAKER_01: And I think that as our, you know, the way that Missouri hockey is set up, as your child gets older, you kind of have a little bit more choice about where you can take your kid to play.
- 26:39SPEAKER_01: You know, you're a little bit more locked in when they're younger and you live in a zip code and whatnot.
- 26:44SPEAKER_01: Um, but you might have a little bit more say over what coach you get to play for when they're older and who you try out for.
- 26:52SPEAKER_01: And um I think for some families, this is part of it.
- 26:56SPEAKER_01: How is that coach gonna talk to my kid?
- 26:59SPEAKER_01: What is the environment gonna be like?
- 27:02SPEAKER_01: Um, and some of it is, you know, it's the culture of the coach in that, like, how do the other kids talk to each other?
- 27:11SPEAKER_01: And um, you know, I suspect, given what you kind of mentioned earlier, Jared, with like battling through in that earlier game, right?
- 27:19SPEAKER_01: That's a culture of not quitting and believing that you can win the game.
- 27:24SPEAKER_01: And there are teams that'll give up in the first period and just think, or or actually, when they read the stat sheet before they've even started the game, they look and see on my hockey rankings, oh, we can't win.
- 27:36SPEAKER_01: Yeah, like I'm gonna be honest, I personally wouldn't want to play for a team like that.
- 27:41SPEAKER_07: I mean, mindset is there's so many facets that you know, you make up, you know, there's so many different facets, you make some great points.
- 27:48SPEAKER_07: Mindset is critical.
- 27:49SPEAKER_07: You know, I've read the book Mindset by Carol Dweck.
- 27:51SPEAKER_07: She talks about you know um the 10,000 hours, but also the visualization.
- 27:58SPEAKER_07: You know, I said this last week, I'll say it again.
- 28:02SPEAKER_07: You know, we used to have a saying when I worked at Enterprise years ago that people don't quit enterprise, they quit their manager.
- 28:08SPEAKER_07: And I do believe that kids to a certain degree quit their coach.
- 28:14SPEAKER_07: Um and as a coach, you know, we all are very competitive.
- 28:21SPEAKER_07: That's why we're coaching.
- 28:22SPEAKER_07: You know, the we we had to stop playing, and so now we have to coach.
- 28:26SPEAKER_07: Um, but I do think that there is a level of you have to know your players, and and some coaches either don't want to talk to their players or they don't know how.
- 28:39SPEAKER_07: Um, some coaches, there's a much bigger age gap, some coaches don't have experience of being parents.
- 28:45SPEAKER_07: I mean, there's all these different components because the diversity of coaches is is just as diverse as players.
- 28:52SPEAKER_07: So, like, I know there's no magic you know wand or or silver bullet that you can say this is gonna solve all, but what are maybe some key steps that um coaches can take at the beginning of the season or at different checkpoints to self-reflect but also communicate with their players and have and allow their players to give to be contributing to the uh you know the path and culture of the team?
- 29:21SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I I like um a coach last season interviewed each child, and a parent was present for safe sport reasons.
- 29:30SPEAKER_01: Um, and I and I loved it.
- 29:32SPEAKER_01: Every, you know, the questions included like things about my kid and what he was into outside of hockey, but also how do you learn at practice?
- 29:43SPEAKER_01: What kind of drills do you like?
- 29:45SPEAKER_01: What is a good warm-up look like for you?
- 29:48SPEAKER_01: Um, you know, specifically to goalies, right?
- 29:51SPEAKER_01: You have to be able to come in off a bench cold.
- 29:54SPEAKER_01: So that's a whole other thing.
- 29:56SPEAKER_01: But I thought, you know, the idea of um it's not very often a coach asks a player to a goalie, you know, to a goalie, you know, what do you want to get out of practice?
- 30:08SPEAKER_01: So I, as a parent, I have to say, I was really like, oh, thank you.
- 30:13SPEAKER_01: Um and in my free time, I coached lacrosse.
- 30:16SPEAKER_01: And and Jared, you were kind of hinting at some of this.
- 30:19SPEAKER_01: I think as a coach, you have to figure out which player can I approach during a game, which player I can't make eye contact with them, right?
- 30:29SPEAKER_01: I'll mess up their play.
- 30:31SPEAKER_01: Um, you know, don't go to them during a period break because you're just gonna make them mad and you're gonna get worse play.
- 30:38SPEAKER_01: And that I think is the preseason challenge, you know, pick up a scrimmage or two and figure out, you know, keep notes.
- 30:46SPEAKER_01: What does each player need?
- 30:48SPEAKER_01: Um, because it's gonna vary different, you know, differently for each kid.
- 30:53SPEAKER_05: So well, Jenny, uh, you've been fantastic helping us out uh tonight, offering your perspective on a relevant topic in hockey today, which uh I wish I could say was a better set of situations, but it's good to talk about.
- 31:12SPEAKER_05: So thanks for providing your mental health perspective.
- 31:15SPEAKER_05: Uh Jenny Hoffman at the Therapy and Wellness Collective.
- 31:19SPEAKER_05: Jenny, where can our listeners find you and our audience find you if they'd like some more information for their teen or youth athlete?

- 31:50SPEAKER_07: I think I know who his coach was last year.
- 31:53SPEAKER_07: Um, and uh I know who his coach is this year.
- 31:55SPEAKER_07: You guys are gonna have a fantastic season.
- 31:57SPEAKER_07: So so good luck and enjoy the uh enjoy the last year of high school for your uh for your senior.
- 32:05SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 32:06SPEAKER_01: You might need a goalie mom uh debrief here some at some point.
- 32:10SPEAKER_07: We've had we know we've had a goalie specific episode, and uh we're gonna have a couple more.
- 32:16SPEAKER_06: So thanks, Jenny.
- 32:18SPEAKER_06: Thanks, Jenny.
- 32:18SPEAKER_06: Take care.

- 32:23SPEAKER_05: Thanks to our friends at Padell and Pickle right here in Olivet.

- 37:48SPEAKER_08: All right, back to the show.
- 37:55SPEAKER_07: Well, I I I think again we don't often take a topic and stretch it over two weeks, but I think this is important, especially as the season begins.
- 38:05SPEAKER_07: We had, I thought, great perspectives last week from uh coaches on the ice.
- 38:11SPEAKER_07: And this week uh with Jenny and then um our next guest who will we'll bring on uh Jeff Brown.
- 38:18SPEAKER_07: Um I think it's creating some well-roundedness, kind of like how we want to get our producer well-rounded when it comes to his actual knowledge of sports that matter.
- 38:28SPEAKER_07: You know, you do work on a hockey show, I'm just gonna say you know, tonight's opening night, we're recording on Tuesday.
- 38:34SPEAKER_07: You know, well, dip your toe in, watch a little bit of hockey.
- 38:39SPEAKER_04: I sat through Panthers hurricanes, which was just all the game.
- 38:45SPEAKER_04: Busty was on Busty was on hockey game.
- 38:47SPEAKER_07: Busty was you no, it was not a terrible hockey game.
- 38:50SPEAKER_04: There was uh Jared, there was about four goals that should have been scored.
- 38:54SPEAKER_04: They just didn't put it on on net.
- 38:56SPEAKER_04: That first game of the season.
- 38:58SPEAKER_04: I don't know.
- 39:00SPEAKER_04: Caroline's been boozing it up all summer.
- 39:02SPEAKER_04: I need to I need something to hook me.
- 39:03SPEAKER_04: You know what the NFL does?
- 39:05SPEAKER_04: Best game of the season normally happens in about week one on prime time, and then boom, you're hooked.
- 39:10SPEAKER_04: Oh, yeah, that Patriots Seahawks game was great.
- 39:12SPEAKER_04: Well, that wasn't the first game, though.
- 39:14SPEAKER_04: Yes, it was.
- 39:15SPEAKER_04: Wasn't it?
- 39:16SPEAKER_04: No, no, I'm saying I'm saying no no, I'm saying that first week you normally get a great game.
- 39:20SPEAKER_04: Yeah, gotcha.
- 39:21SPEAKER_04: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 39:22SPEAKER_04: That 49ers Rams game in Australia was musty TV.
- 39:25SPEAKER_04: Sunday night and Monday night were great games, though.
- 39:28SPEAKER_06: Not gonna that's true.
- 39:29SPEAKER_05: Yeah, Grant, because I love you, I'm willing to share whatever subscription service the blues are gonna be on this year with you, buddy.
- 39:36SPEAKER_04: I'm I want to get into the blues, I want to watch them this year.
- 39:39SPEAKER_04: What makes me mad is is that we have direct TV and they still don't have the blues on direct TV, so that better get added.
- 39:47SPEAKER_07: You're complaining about your parents' subscription to that you don't have to contribute to no no, I'm complaining about the blues not putting the games on direct TV, they're only on Spectrum.
- 39:58SPEAKER_07: Some some some are on Prime.
- 40:03SPEAKER_05: They're going on Amazon this year.
- 40:04SPEAKER_05: Yeah, they're comes with a subscription, but because I love you, I'm gonna help you out.
- 40:09SPEAKER_05: This guy, what a gentleman! Yes.
- 40:11SPEAKER_07: Well, we've we're welcoming our next guest, uh Jeff Brown, two-time uh two-time guest from the mindful hockey club.
- 40:19SPEAKER_07: Yep, up in the great uh country of Canada to the north.
- 40:22SPEAKER_07: He's traveling to Winnipeg, so we're hopeful that he does not uh you know anger any of the locals there with uh his talk of Toronto hockey and also of uh jabbing in their sides the fact that Connor Hellebuck, the greatest goaltender in the world right now, wants out.
- 40:37SPEAKER_07: But this is Jeff Brown from the Mindful Hockey Club, and we're gonna talk again about the Arizona State University uh tragedy and really how we can apply this to becoming better coaches and just better people.
- 40:48SPEAKER_05: Take a listen.
- 40:52SPEAKER_05: I love talking to Jeff Brown, he is fantastic.
- 40:56SPEAKER_05: And this time we got him traveling, and I always like asking our interviewees where they're going to dinner because I feel like part of being a hockey player or a hockey family is especially if you're traveling to a place, you want a good jaunt, right?
- 41:15SPEAKER_05: You want a good food place to go to.
- 41:17SPEAKER_07: Let's be honest, you and I have liked our fair shares of dinner this past year.
- 41:21SPEAKER_05: We have, we've added a couple LBs, but I mean, I remember I remember uh last year when we started, we were talking to Louisville.
- 41:29SPEAKER_05: Louisville.
- 41:30SPEAKER_05: And and we were talking about great places to eat in Louisville.
- 41:33SPEAKER_05: So uh, you know, we gotta know good places to eat in Winnipeg while we're talking to these guys.
- 41:38SPEAKER_07: I think what we are we need it, which also, you know, is a great segue into our uh our our virtual road trip across the country as we go and revisit some of these great uh youth hockey organizations, hopefully find some new ones.
- 41:51SPEAKER_07: Speaking of great food, if we can find one in Louisiana, uh New Orleans, Nolans, Nola, uh that would be pretty awesome.
- 41:58SPEAKER_07: I'm not sure if they have a youth hockey district in New Orleans or Baton Rouge, but I'm pretty sure that you know there's some hockey getting played down there.
- 42:08SPEAKER_07: Um, but yeah, Jeff Jeff is phenomenal.
- 42:10SPEAKER_07: You know, he brings a unique perspective as a former professional player who has played um at the highest level.
- 42:17SPEAKER_07: He he he has played NHL preseason games.
- 42:20SPEAKER_07: I know his brother is still in the NHL, but also from the standpoint of recognizing, and he had a great uh great like insight to at some point we become coaches because we can no longer play, or we no longer have the or you know, someone tells us we can no longer play, and that's a stress.
- 42:39SPEAKER_07: And so you know, I often wonder as we have you know these coaches who are considered hard, you know, the Herb Brooks of the world, or or some folks like Mike Babcock, you know, is some of that this like built-in angst.
- 42:54SPEAKER_07: Um, I don't know.
- 42:55SPEAKER_07: I mean, I don't want to speculate too much, but I think it's important that as coaches, especially, well, not especially, at any level, no matter who you're coaching, you have to have fun doing what you're doing, and you have to respect the people who you're frankly that you're influencing.
- 43:12SPEAKER_07: Whether you're an NHL coach or uh a C3 tenue coach, you are influencing those players.
- 43:18SPEAKER_05: Somewhere out there, Bob Mancini is giving you a high five right now.
- 43:21SPEAKER_07: Well, we we're gonna talk to him in a couple weeks.
- 43:23SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 43:25SPEAKER_05: But we're gonna talk to Grant right now.
- 43:26SPEAKER_05: We are gonna talk to Grant right now.
- 43:28SPEAKER_05: Uh we have a turning of the tables on trivia.
- 43:36SPEAKER_05: We're gonna turn the tables, and I can't wait to see how this goes down.
- 43:40SPEAKER_05: We're gonna test Grant's knowledge of things that are uh intimate and familiar to him.
- 43:46SPEAKER_05: Uh the last couple of episodes, he's been testing us on our NHL lore knowledge.
- 43:52SPEAKER_05: And uh, I have to say, Coach Jared's uh pretty, pretty solid in his lore knowledge.
- 44:00SPEAKER_07: Uh but I know the answers to all your questions, but I can't get mine right.
- 44:03SPEAKER_05: But today, today, uh, on this week's episode, we're gonna turn the tables and we're gonna see just how knowledgeable Grant is.
- 44:12SPEAKER_07: And this this comes from our friend, our friendly neighborhood producer uh saying how busy he is during football season because he can't come to our gigs.
- 44:22SPEAKER_07: And so it's like, all right, if you're so busy, Mr.
- 44:25SPEAKER_07: College Football Guru, Mizoo uh Tiger Alum, you know, let's you know let's let's let's test that out.
- 44:32SPEAKER_07: And so today we're gonna have a little coach's version.
- 44:37SPEAKER_07: Are you smarter than your producer?
- 44:38SPEAKER_07: You used to have a smarter than your fifth grader, are you smarter than your producer?
- 44:41SPEAKER_07: And coach and I are gonna be uh quizzing Grant on Mizou uh Mizoo trivia since 2005, the year he was born.
- 44:52SPEAKER_07: And he's gonna hit us with the NHL, uh, the NHL um uh uh so we're gonna go head to head, 2v1.
- 45:01SPEAKER_07: Uh so we got a little odd man rush here, two-on-one up the ice.
- 45:04SPEAKER_07: Let's see how tough he is.
- 45:05SPEAKER_07: So, Grant, it's your segment.
- 45:08SPEAKER_07: Let's play some trivia.
- 45:17SPEAKER_02: It's too many men on the mic hockey trivia time.
- 45:21SPEAKER_02: Now, here's your host, Grant the Killer.
- 45:30SPEAKER_04: Oh, hello, hello, oh, oh, thank you, thank you.
- 45:36SPEAKER_04: So uh I haven't really been clued in on exactly um the format until just now, 2v1.
- 45:44SPEAKER_04: You guys made it sound like you were giving me the hardest Mizzou question.
- 45:49SPEAKER_04: Like, who who caught two receptions in Missouri's game against Oklahoma in 2000?
- 45:54SPEAKER_07: Don't you know?
- 45:55SPEAKER_07: Don't you know?
- 45:56SPEAKER_04: Well, too bad.
- 45:58SPEAKER_04: I have some hockey stuff pulled up for you, but I guess I guess.
- 46:03SPEAKER_05: No, this episode's all about you, buddy.
- 46:06SPEAKER_07: How many questions are you asking me?
- 46:07SPEAKER_07: So we have we have six questions just in case we get that far.
- 46:11SPEAKER_07: So we'll say if if you know you can ask us this six questions, but if we get to a point where there's just it's like we're dormy, that's a little cool.
- 46:20SPEAKER_07: We're dormy, I like that, then you're just done.
- 46:23SPEAKER_04: So well, I guess I have to start.
- 46:26SPEAKER_04: I guess you have to start.
- 46:28SPEAKER_04: No, you have to ask me.
- 46:29SPEAKER_04: You guys start right.
- 46:30SPEAKER_05: We get to ask you.
- 46:31SPEAKER_05: So, Grant, let's go, buddy.
- 46:33SPEAKER_05: Uh I I love it.
- 46:35SPEAKER_05: And uh uh, how many times since 2004 has Mizzou been in the top ten of the season?
- 46:48SPEAKER_04: The end of the season.
- 46:50SPEAKER_04: So they would have been in the top ten at the end of the season, 2008, when they lost Oklahoma in the SEC Championship.
- 46:58SPEAKER_04: They were in 2023 after they beat um after they beat Ohio State in the Cotton Bowl.
- 47:07SPEAKER_05: Well that he knows the opponents.
- 47:08SPEAKER_05: This is crazy.
- 47:09SPEAKER_04: I don't know if they beat the championship in 2008, though.
- 47:12SPEAKER_04: It would have been the Big 12 championship in 2008.
- 47:15SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 47:16SPEAKER_04: I don't know if they were top 10 after they lost to Auburn and beat Oklahoma State in the Cotton Bowl.
- 47:23SPEAKER_04: I'm gonna say three times since 2004, they've been in the top 10.
- 47:30SPEAKER_07: 07, 08, and 23.
- 47:33SPEAKER_07: Wow.
- 47:34SPEAKER_07: Wow.
- 47:35SPEAKER_07: We could we could solid start.
- 47:37SPEAKER_07: Well, those weren't the years I thought.
- 47:39SPEAKER_07: I missed one.
- 47:40SPEAKER_07: We could be in one year, coach.
- 47:42SPEAKER_05: He's laying the lair.
- 47:43SPEAKER_05: Okay, I love it.
- 47:44SPEAKER_07: We could be we could be in one year, coach.
- 47:47SPEAKER_07: You got it.
- 47:47SPEAKER_07: He's okay.
- 47:48SPEAKER_07: He's got to turn it, turn the table.
- 47:49SPEAKER_07: He's got the table on us.
- 47:51SPEAKER_05: Let's go.
- 47:51SPEAKER_05: Let's go.
- 47:51SPEAKER_07: All right, here you go.
- 47:54SPEAKER_04: Um, I see.
- 47:57SPEAKER_04: I didn't know uh that one wasn't the most impossible, so I'm trying not to uh make this too hard on you.
- 48:03SPEAKER_07: Okay, be shy, don't be shy.
- 48:05SPEAKER_07: Give it give it your all.
- 48:08SPEAKER_04: Who was the first goalie to record an assist in an NHL game?
- 48:12SPEAKER_04: That happened before 1972.
- 48:14SPEAKER_04: What kind of question's that?
- 48:15SPEAKER_04: I didn't know it was 1972.
- 48:18SPEAKER_04: First assist.
- 48:19SPEAKER_04: This should be a layup though.
- 48:25SPEAKER_04: I know this goalie.
- 48:45SPEAKER_07: So Glenhall.
- 48:47SPEAKER_07: Glenn Hall.
- 48:51SPEAKER_04: I can't find it.
- 48:52SPEAKER_04: Where's the I don't even know how to say his name.
- 48:58SPEAKER_04: I I don't Venetsa, or how do I say it?
- 49:03SPEAKER_07: I don't know who that is.
- 49:04SPEAKER_04: Who wins who wins the award for goalie of the year?
- 49:06SPEAKER_04: What's it?
- 49:06SPEAKER_04: Oh, Vesna!
- 49:08SPEAKER_07: Oh, Vesna.
- 49:08SPEAKER_07: George Vesna.
- 49:10SPEAKER_07: Yes.
- 49:10SPEAKER_07: George George Vesna.
- 49:12SPEAKER_07: Like seriously.
- 49:13SPEAKER_07: I knew who it was.
- 49:15SPEAKER_07: George Vesna.
- 49:16SPEAKER_07: That's what you're hitting.
- 49:19SPEAKER_07: They named the award after him.
- 49:21SPEAKER_07: All right.
- 49:21SPEAKER_07: Fair.
- 49:22SPEAKER_07: All right, so all right.
- 49:23SPEAKER_07: All right.
- 49:25SPEAKER_07: Uh oh.
- 49:27SPEAKER_07: He's not getting this one.
- 49:30SPEAKER_07: In the 2007 Game of the Century, border war matchup with Kansas.
- 49:37SPEAKER_07: Who scored the last points for Mizzou in their victory?
- 49:41SPEAKER_07: The defense did.
- 49:43SPEAKER_04: In a safety.
- 49:47SPEAKER_04: No player gets the points, the whole defense gets the points.
- 49:51SPEAKER_04: Whoa!
- 49:53SPEAKER_07: That would be Lorenzo Williams on his sack of Kansas quarterback Todd recently.
- 49:59SPEAKER_07: Dude, we are in one.
- 50:02SPEAKER_05: We got our hands full.
- 50:03SPEAKER_04: The iconic clip of um, I think it's Hensley, is the guy's name.
- 50:08SPEAKER_04: Of he gets tackled in that arrowhead turf, and he just has so much brass in his helmet that he's trying to pull out of his helmet as he's walking off.
- 50:17SPEAKER_07: And that was probably that's probably a pregame hype video, too.
- 50:20SPEAKER_07: Oh yeah.
- 50:20SPEAKER_04: Oh yeah.
- 50:21SPEAKER_04: I've seen that a lot.
- 50:22SPEAKER_04: I remember watching that live.
- 50:24SPEAKER_04: That's one of my earliest.
- 50:25SPEAKER_04: You were three years old.
- 50:27SPEAKER_04: 2007, I was four.
- 50:29SPEAKER_04: Okay.
- 50:29unknown: Yeah.
- 50:30SPEAKER_04: Early, early memories.
- 50:31SPEAKER_04: Yeah, yeah.
- 50:32SPEAKER_05: All right, bring it on.
- 50:32SPEAKER_05: Bring it on.
- 50:33SPEAKER_05: What do we got?
- 50:34SPEAKER_04: All right.
- 50:35SPEAKER_04: Um, who holds the record for the longest NHL winning streak by a team in a single regular season?
- 51:03SPEAKER_09: I think it's time.
- 51:08SPEAKER_07: All time.
- 51:09SPEAKER_07: All time.
- 51:10SPEAKER_04: All time.
- 51:12SPEAKER_07: Um Oh, no, no, no, no.
- 51:15SPEAKER_07: It's um it's uh it's it's either Philadelphia or Washington or a team like that.
- 51:22SPEAKER_07: I think so, yeah.
- 51:23SPEAKER_07: I think it's like uh it was it's 13 games.
- 51:27SPEAKER_07: Um I think it's like 13 game.
- 51:32SPEAKER_06: Well they had overtime.
- 51:34SPEAKER_06: I think it's I think it's uh I think it's Washington Capitals.
- 51:37SPEAKER_04: Or it's like Philly, but like Washington Capitals 1992, 1993, the Pittsburgh Penguins won 17.
- 51:49SPEAKER_04: It was in that range.
- 51:50SPEAKER_07: It was like, I mean, Philly, Washington, I mean I knew it was a metro metro.
- 51:54SPEAKER_05: How many games was it?
- 51:55SPEAKER_07: 17.
- 51:56SPEAKER_07: That's that's legit.
- 51:58SPEAKER_07: Didn't Colorado win like 19 in a row last year?
- 52:01SPEAKER_07: I think they had 13.
- 52:02SPEAKER_07: I think they had some over.
- 52:03SPEAKER_07: I think they might have had an overtime lot.
- 52:05SPEAKER_07: I mean, okay, it's so hard with that because there used to be ties.
- 52:08SPEAKER_07: Yeah.
- 52:08SPEAKER_07: And so so we're down 0-2.
- 52:10SPEAKER_07: All right.
- 52:11SPEAKER_07: We're almost, he's almost dorming.
- 52:13unknown: All right.
- 52:13SPEAKER_07: I'm getting close to dorming.
- 52:15SPEAKER_07: It gets harder as you go down.
- 52:16SPEAKER_07: Don't ask to tell.
- 52:18SPEAKER_05: We're moving down since 2004, Grant.
- 52:28SPEAKER_05: What SEC school does Mizzou have its best record percentage-wise against minimum four games played.
- 52:44SPEAKER_04: This is gonna be between Vandy, Arkansas, and South Carolina.
- 52:49SPEAKER_04: They're gonna say Vanderbilt.
- 52:59SPEAKER_04: Final answer.
- 53:01SPEAKER_09: No is it South Carolina?
- 53:06SPEAKER_07: It's Arkansas.
- 53:07SPEAKER_07: It's Arkansas.
- 53:08SPEAKER_07: Arkansas.
- 53:09SPEAKER_07: 11 and 3.
- 53:10SPEAKER_07: Arkansas.
- 53:12SPEAKER_07: Does it have the other ones or no?
- 53:14SPEAKER_07: I didn't care about the other ones.
- 53:16SPEAKER_07: I just said who was number one.
- 53:17SPEAKER_07: So we're down, we're down 02 with three to play.
- 53:21SPEAKER_04: Did it scare you a little bit that I got in the when I was numbering?
- 53:24SPEAKER_07: Oh, the minute you said Arkansas, I was like, he's picking Arkansas.
- 53:27SPEAKER_04: Dang it.
- 53:29SPEAKER_04: Okay.
- 53:31SPEAKER_04: Um all right, here's here's another 90s question.
- 53:37SPEAKER_04: Who holds the record for most goals scored by a rookie in a single NHL season?
- 53:45SPEAKER_09: Oh, I hit the wrong button! I agree.
- 54:02SPEAKER_07: Correct.
- 54:03SPEAKER_07: Yes.
- 54:04SPEAKER_07: Two one.
- 54:05SPEAKER_07: All right, two one, three.
- 54:08SPEAKER_07: We've got three to play here.
- 54:09SPEAKER_07: Need this.
- 54:11SPEAKER_07: Need this since 2004.
- 54:16SPEAKER_07: Which Mizoo Tiger has the most combined TDs in the NFL?
- 54:23SPEAKER_04: Since 2004, which Mizou Tiger is this does this count passing touchdowns?
- 54:28SPEAKER_05: Combined TDs, combined passing rushing, interception, interception, return.
- 54:34SPEAKER_07: I don't care.
- 54:34SPEAKER_07: Anytime you cross the end zone.
- 54:41SPEAKER_04: Oh God.
- 54:43SPEAKER_04: 2004.
- 54:45SPEAKER_04: This is hard.
- 54:47SPEAKER_04: It's not supposed to be easy.
- 54:48SPEAKER_04: They don't have, I mean, Gabbert, Locke, and Daniel are really the only quarterbacks that played.
- 54:54SPEAKER_04: Daniel knows.
- 55:17SPEAKER_07: Oh, Macklin was so this is our fourth question.
- 55:26SPEAKER_07: We are down three one.
- 55:29SPEAKER_07: Okay.
- 55:29SPEAKER_07: Fourth question down three one.
- 55:30SPEAKER_07: So we have we can we can technically we gotta get this right.
- 55:34SPEAKER_05: We gotta get this right.
- 55:35SPEAKER_04: You gotta get this right or you're dorming.
- 55:37SPEAKER_04: Yeah, we're dorming.
- 55:38SPEAKER_05: You're dormy.
- 55:39SPEAKER_05: Let's go.
- 55:41SPEAKER_04: Um okay.
- 55:43SPEAKER_04: This which defenseman was the first in NHL history to record 100 points in a season?
- 55:56SPEAKER_04: Bobby Orr.
- 55:58SPEAKER_04: I like this one.
- 56:01SPEAKER_04: We are still in the game.
- 56:03SPEAKER_04: Still in it.
- 56:04SPEAKER_04: Still in it.
- 56:05SPEAKER_04: Three-two.
- 56:08SPEAKER_06: I think you gotta ask.
- 56:11SPEAKER_06: I gotta ask three.
- 56:12SPEAKER_05: All right.
- 56:13SPEAKER_05: Grant, who is Mizzou's highest draft pick since 2004?
- 56:21SPEAKER_05: Um.
- 56:25SPEAKER_04: Well, Mimbu just went like eight.
- 56:35SPEAKER_04: Is it Justin Smith?
- 56:41SPEAKER_07: Nope.
- 56:43SPEAKER_07: Oh, oh with the wrong button.
- 56:48SPEAKER_07: So it's a tie.
- 56:49SPEAKER_07: Should have gone with your first.
- 56:50SPEAKER_07: It's Alden Smith in 2011 with seven.
- 56:55SPEAKER_07: With seven.
- 56:55SPEAKER_07: They were both seven.
- 56:57SPEAKER_07: Why did I say Justin Smith?
- 56:59SPEAKER_07: No clue.
- 57:00SPEAKER_07: It's Alden Smith.
- 57:01SPEAKER_07: Alden Smith.
- 57:02SPEAKER_07: Alden Smith.
- 57:02SPEAKER_07: So we can so this is this is our chance to tie.
- 57:06SPEAKER_07: It's our chance to tie right here.
- 57:07SPEAKER_07: Whereas this is question five.
- 57:10SPEAKER_07: We could be three-three after this one with one to play.
- 57:12SPEAKER_05: Let's go.
- 57:15SPEAKER_04: Who holds the record for most career playoff shutouts?
- 57:30SPEAKER_06: No way.
- 57:56SPEAKER_07: All right, just cause he has every record pretty much.
- 57:59SPEAKER_07: Uh we're gonna go Martin Brodeur.
- 58:04SPEAKER_07: Yeah! Let's go! Let's go!
- 58:09SPEAKER_04: Three three.
- 58:11SPEAKER_04: Three three! I said Justin Smith.
- 58:14SPEAKER_07: Oh, you're gonna that's gonna be a clip.
- 58:19SPEAKER_07: Justin Smith.
- 58:21SPEAKER_07: Oh okay.
- 58:23SPEAKER_07: I probably shouldn't have picked this one, but we're gonna have to do it anyways.
- 58:28SPEAKER_07: When did Mizou join the SEC?
- 58:31SPEAKER_04: They joined their first football season, it was the 2012-2013 season.
- 58:42SPEAKER_07: Too recent.
- 58:42SPEAKER_07: Too recent.
- 58:43SPEAKER_07: Thank you.
- 58:44SPEAKER_07: I should have actually said when they officially joined because it was 2009.
- 58:47SPEAKER_04: Well, yeah.
- 58:49SPEAKER_04: All right, here you go.
- 58:51SPEAKER_04: To extend the match.
- 58:55SPEAKER_04: Oh okay, okay.
- 59:00SPEAKER_04: Where do I want to go?
- 59:02SPEAKER_04: Here.
- 59:02SPEAKER_04: Alright.
- 59:04SPEAKER_04: Who holds the record for most career games played?
- 59:09SPEAKER_04: Most career games played?
- 59:12SPEAKER_06: Uh it's it's uh Patrick Marlowe.
- 59:16SPEAKER_06: I was gonna say him or right or Patrick Marlowe.
- 59:20SPEAKER_07: Patrick Marlow.
- 59:23SPEAKER_07: Now we gotta now we gotta all right.
- 59:25SPEAKER_07: Now we're going to extra your extra time here.
- 59:28SPEAKER_04: Okay, we need to.
- 59:32SPEAKER_04: I think we need to tell each other what our question is so that they're similar on who are we doing closest to the pen?
- 59:39SPEAKER_05: Well, let's let I was just gonna say that.
- 59:41SPEAKER_05: So let's do closest to the pen.
- 59:44SPEAKER_04: Because if you do like all-time passing yards and I do like all-time wins, they're gonna be there's a wide disparity there.
- 59:52SPEAKER_04: You know what I mean?
- 59:52SPEAKER_05: See closest to the pen.
- 59:53SPEAKER_04: Yeah, closest to the pen.
- 59:55SPEAKER_04: What's your question to me gonna be?
- 59:57SPEAKER_05: Hold on a second.
- 59:57SPEAKER_05: We're gonna do come up with that right now.
- 59:59SPEAKER_04: And then I'll come up with mine.
- 1:00:01SPEAKER_05: Okay.
- 1:00:16SPEAKER_06: I've got one.
- 1:00:17SPEAKER_06: I got I think what about this?
- 1:00:21SPEAKER_04: Say it out loud.
- 1:00:22SPEAKER_04: No, you can say it now.
- 1:00:24SPEAKER_08: You can say that.
- 1:00:25SPEAKER_04: Because I need to ask him, I need to figure out yours.
- 1:00:35SPEAKER_06: You can do that.
- 1:00:37SPEAKER_06: Because that's their that's their all-time record right there.
- 1:00:40SPEAKER_04: Are you doing all-time record?
- 1:00:42SPEAKER_04: Ooh.
- 1:00:44SPEAKER_06: Oh, yeah.
- 1:00:45SPEAKER_06: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:00:46SPEAKER_06: Within we gotta do it like within, let's do it within a thousand.
- 1:00:49SPEAKER_04: Yeah, within a thousand.
- 1:00:50SPEAKER_04: All right, here's what we're that's excellent.
- 1:00:52SPEAKER_04: Okay.
- 1:00:53SPEAKER_04: Well, no, then I asked you one, I thought.
- 1:00:55SPEAKER_04: Yeah, yeah, you asked one.
- 1:00:57SPEAKER_04: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:00:57SPEAKER_04: Okay.
- 1:00:58SPEAKER_07: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:00:58SPEAKER_07: Yeah, but we're gonna we have to give you the question, right?
- 1:01:00SPEAKER_07: Yes, yes, yes, yes.
- 1:01:01SPEAKER_07: So our question is this within a thousand.
- 1:01:07SPEAKER_07: Within a thousand.
- 1:01:08SPEAKER_07: What is the single game record attendance at Farrett Field, now called Memorial Stadium?
- 1:01:14SPEAKER_07: For oh well.
- 1:01:20SPEAKER_04: Well, why's it gotta be within a thousand?
- 1:01:22SPEAKER_04: If if if I'm off, then it depends how far you guys are off on mine.
- 1:01:26SPEAKER_05: Well, that's a good point.
- 1:01:27SPEAKER_04: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:01:28SPEAKER_04: So I'll come up with mine for you now.
- 1:01:30SPEAKER_04: Okay, okay.
- 1:01:31SPEAKER_04: Um, and I think I'm going to do the same question.
- 1:01:37SPEAKER_04: What's the most attended NHL game ever?
- 1:01:41SPEAKER_07: The most attended NHL game ever.
- 1:01:42SPEAKER_07: Yep.
- 1:01:43SPEAKER_04: So I want the number of how many fans were at the most attended NHL game ever.
- 1:01:47SPEAKER_04: You have to tell us what it was.
- 1:01:49SPEAKER_04: What was the game?
- 1:01:51SPEAKER_04: Well, you're asking, you can't ask.
- 1:01:54SPEAKER_04: Yeah, I guess in what stadium.
- 1:01:55SPEAKER_04: Okay, okay.
- 1:01:56SPEAKER_04: It was at it was the winter classic.
- 1:01:59SPEAKER_04: I was just gonna say winter classic at the big house.
- 1:02:02SPEAKER_04: Yeah, I yeah, at the big house.
- 1:02:03SPEAKER_04: At the big house.
- 1:02:04SPEAKER_04: Okay.
- 1:02:05SPEAKER_04: I'm going to go that the record attendance at Farofield Memorial Stadium is something in like the early 1900s.
- 1:02:14SPEAKER_04: So it's gonna be bigger than the capacity was now because you know you could just stand, no bleachers.
- 1:02:19SPEAKER_04: I'm gonna go 83,000 is the record attendance.
- 1:02:26SPEAKER_07: Okay.
- 1:02:26SPEAKER_07: 83,000.
- 1:02:27SPEAKER_04: Mm-hmm.
- 1:02:28SPEAKER_04: Now I need an answer.
- 1:02:29SPEAKER_07: No, no, no.
- 1:02:31SPEAKER_07: Uh okay.
- 1:02:36SPEAKER_07: So, okay, so we've got how much you're off by.
- 1:02:38SPEAKER_04: So what's my okay, yeah, that's fair.
- 1:02:40SPEAKER_04: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:02:41SPEAKER_04: I feel like you guys are handicapped going, because if I'm way off, you guys can we didn't do this the right way.
- 1:02:47SPEAKER_04: But it's okay.
- 1:02:48SPEAKER_04: No, this is fine.
- 1:02:49SPEAKER_07: This is perfect.
- 1:02:50SPEAKER_07: So let's let's discuss here.
- 1:02:52SPEAKER_07: So the big house on a football stadium for a football game is 111,000.
- 1:02:59SPEAKER_07: So rinks in the center of the football field.
- 1:03:03SPEAKER_05: You're not gonna have 111,000 seats available with a rink.
- 1:03:07SPEAKER_07: No, you are probably something something tells me that it was 100.
- 1:03:22SPEAKER_06: It was 100.
- 1:03:23SPEAKER_06: It was the leaves versus the wings.
- 1:03:24SPEAKER_05: I I think it's more than you think.
- 1:03:26SPEAKER_06: I think so too.
- 1:03:27SPEAKER_05: I I'm gonna say it's more like 90.
- 1:03:29SPEAKER_06: Okay.
- 1:03:30SPEAKER_06: Can I say 90?
- 1:03:31SPEAKER_05: No.
- 1:03:32SPEAKER_05: Um said 111.
- 1:03:35SPEAKER_07: 111 is what the capacity is for the stadium.
- 1:03:39SPEAKER_04: Whoa, whoa, whoa.
- 1:03:40SPEAKER_04: What's up?
- 1:03:42SPEAKER_05: I'm using my calculator.
- 1:03:43SPEAKER_05: I'm not cheating.
- 1:03:44SPEAKER_05: Yes.
- 1:03:44SPEAKER_05: He's watching me.
- 1:03:50SPEAKER_05: Okay.
- 1:03:51SPEAKER_06: Do you think it's that?
- 1:03:52SPEAKER_05: No, I don't think it's that.
- 1:03:54SPEAKER_05: I think it's lower.
- 1:03:55SPEAKER_05: I'm gonna say 90,000.
- 1:03:57SPEAKER_04: Okay.
- 1:03:58SPEAKER_04: Do you want me to give you how far you were off by or give me how far I was off by?
- 1:04:02SPEAKER_07: You were off by 7,702.
- 1:04:07SPEAKER_04: Well, gents, the winner is Grid Soulsman! Woo! All right, how many?
- 1:04:17SPEAKER_04: How many?
- 1:04:17SPEAKER_04: What was it?
- 1:04:18SPEAKER_04: 114,000 is the result.
- 1:04:21SPEAKER_04: Why would it be lower for an NHL game?
- 1:04:24SPEAKER_07: That makes no sense because it was because you're further away from the rink, you may not, but they they remember the packed that thing out.
- 1:04:30SPEAKER_07: They did, they packed it around it too on the field.
- 1:04:33SPEAKER_05: I would have thought that they took the higher rows, and maybe well, yeah, that makes sense, but so so we were off by 24 and you're off by 77.
- 1:04:44SPEAKER_07: The actual uh was seven thousand seventy-five thousand two hundred and ninety-eight against Penn State.
- 1:04:49SPEAKER_07: That's the most it was it was and I said 83.
- 1:04:52SPEAKER_04: That's pretty good.
- 1:04:52SPEAKER_04: Well, well done, Grant.
- 1:04:54SPEAKER_04: Pat yourself on the back, why don't you?
- 1:04:55SPEAKER_04: Go ahead.
- 1:04:55SPEAKER_04: Yeah, that's just I can't find the applause.
- 1:04:59SPEAKER_07: Well, clearly, clearly, we are not smarter than our producer.
- 1:05:03SPEAKER_07: Uh, not today.
- 1:05:04SPEAKER_07: Well, you know, thanks again as always, Grant.
- 1:05:07SPEAKER_07: I'll get out of here so we can say goodbye to the people that matter, our listeners.
- 1:05:13SPEAKER_07: Um, you know, well, thanks again to Jenny Hoffman.
- 1:05:17SPEAKER_07: Thanks again to Jeff Brown and mindful hockey coach.
- 1:05:20SPEAKER_07: Um, no thank you to our producer who's a smart aleck and decides to like use trick questions and trickery.
- 1:05:27SPEAKER_07: Um, but hey, great show, great week.
- 1:05:30SPEAKER_07: You know, go out, watch some hockey this week, watch some NFL college football, have some fun, enjoy the enjoy the weather, and uh we'll see you on the flip side.
- 1:05:38SPEAKER_05: If you're a youth hockey player at home, I want you to watch one period of hockey.
- 1:05:44SPEAKER_05: It's on the TV.
- 1:05:45SPEAKER_05: See you next week.
- 1:05:46SPEAKER_07: Take care, folks.
- 1:06:24SPEAKER_05: We are here with Jeff Brown from the Mindful Hockey Club.
- 1:06:29SPEAKER_05: Jeff, welcome back.
- 1:06:31SPEAKER_05: We loved having you on last year.
- 1:06:33SPEAKER_05: It was about this time last year, if memory serves me correctly.
- 1:06:37SPEAKER_05: It was in the September, I feel like early October time frame.
- 1:06:41SPEAKER_05: How are you?
- 1:06:42SPEAKER_03: I'm doing great, boys.
- 1:06:43SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I always love jumping on with you guys.
- 1:06:45SPEAKER_03: And uh I feel like you got uh some really good topics today, so I'm excited to dive in.
- 1:06:51SPEAKER_05: Well, appreciate your time.
- 1:06:53SPEAKER_05: Uh this is part two of a conversation we had last week, which really was around a hockey incident, uh, a pro-prospect, uh Matthew Mayek, who was a thinkless blues prospect, believe it or not.
- 1:07:09SPEAKER_05: I know I'm showing my hometown colors here, but uh we're gonna get into last week we had some of the coaches on, and some coaches provide an opinion on the story.
- 1:07:20SPEAKER_05: This week we're gonna touch a little bit on the mental health aspect of things.
- 1:07:26SPEAKER_05: And so let's fire away and get your take on some of these Jeff.
- 1:07:30SPEAKER_05: Uh in the article, um, I'm sure you saw things like a reference like uh there was a picture of an ultra-soft Charmin role that was put in the locker room.
- 1:07:44SPEAKER_05: And curious, uh, does shame-based coaching actually make teams tougher?
- 1:07:52SPEAKER_05: Or does the research point the other way?
- 1:07:56SPEAKER_03: Yeah, well, I think I think nowadays people are getting smarter, right?
- 1:08:00SPEAKER_03: I think it's a it's an old school mentality, you know, calling kids soft and and and everything like that.
- 1:08:06SPEAKER_03: I I mean, to me, fear does not equal mental toughness, right?
- 1:08:10SPEAKER_03: So, you know, fear can make a player work harder for a period of time, but I don't think fear is a foundation that you want to build a high performing athlete on, right?
- 1:08:18SPEAKER_03: So a lot of times, you know, um, you know, this shame-based coaching, like it, it it has the the problem with it is that sometimes short term it's effective, right?
- 1:08:29SPEAKER_03: Because you can get uh you know players to comply with your you know demands.
- 1:08:34SPEAKER_03: But uh, you know, I think fear and uh you know, fear and shame, they're taking players out of the present moment, right?
- 1:08:42SPEAKER_03: So they start thinking about protecting themselves.
- 1:08:44SPEAKER_03: How do I look to my teammates?
- 1:08:46SPEAKER_03: How do I look to my coach?
- 1:08:48SPEAKER_03: Like what happens if I'm gonna make a mistake?
- 1:08:51SPEAKER_03: So to me, it's not effective in uh you know the long run of you know building a high performance athlete, especially from you know a mindset uh point of view.
- 1:09:05SPEAKER_05: Yeah, and uh how is that different from demanding high standards coaching that maybe players might traditionally respond well to?
- 1:09:19SPEAKER_03: Yeah, no, I mean there's a difference like right between like healthy high standards and you know shame-based kind of high standards, right?
- 1:09:27SPEAKER_03: Uh, you know, asking your players for accountability, you know, effort, preparation, uh, attention to detail, you know, compete level, like those are things that they're within the player's control, right?
- 1:09:40SPEAKER_03: But attacking a player's personality, uh, you know, the way that they the way that they see and play the game, right?
- 1:09:48SPEAKER_03: Like that creates uh, you know, a fear of failure, right?
- 1:09:51SPEAKER_03: So sometimes you can get a short-term spike, and sometimes, you know, if it's done like not from shame, but you know, sometimes as a player, we all need to be reminded of like, hey, there you have another level here.
- 1:10:03SPEAKER_03: But just doing that where it's like, hey, that wasn't good enough, and like let's get on the same team here and fix it, you know, as opposed as opposed to saying, you know, you're not good enough as a player, like to me, that's that there's a there's a difference there between that healthy high standard and and shame-based, right?
- 1:10:19SPEAKER_07: How do you delineate between good-natured um good-natured like ribbing, so to speak?
- 1:10:29SPEAKER_07: You know, um, where you're not so much shame-based, but you're kind of like, oh man, that puck, you know, through the you know, we threw the five-hole, or you know, having fun, but also motivating.
- 1:10:42SPEAKER_07: As a coach, you don't always know what's going on in that in that kid's world, you know, the eight hours before they see you.
- 1:10:50SPEAKER_07: Um, how can you still be genuine and have a little bit of fun with that player, but also challenge them without without you know really knowing everything that maybe happened, you know, the eight hours before you start events?
- 1:11:04SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I definitely think that from a coaching perspective, sometimes that can be difficult.
- 1:11:08SPEAKER_03: But what I like to always talk to coaches about is you know, creating an environment where your players kind of hold each other accountable, but they're doing it in like a respectful, healthy, you know, uh way that's that's you know, not you know, you're still you're still chirping your buddies, right?
- 1:11:25SPEAKER_03: You're still you're still doing all the things that uh you know we've we've done for years, and and that's how that's especially boys specifically, that's how we hold each other accountable.
- 1:11:33SPEAKER_03: But and and and but we need to make sure as as coaches that you know we're taking uh the approach of like, okay, how can we figure this out together, right?
- 1:11:42SPEAKER_03: I think like, you know, in the ASG story, you know, it sounded like that coach really kind of um, you know, he built himself up as this, you know, larger than life, you know, big personality, like my way or the highway type of thing.
- 1:11:56SPEAKER_03: And you know, I think he had some short-term success, but with a different group of players, you know, his players getting younger, you know, it kind of seemed like he wasn't willing to make some changes to to the his approach as a coach, right?
- 1:12:09SPEAKER_03: And you know, that obviously, you know, I I know that a thousand percent he wishes that he could take back that workout and and everything else, right?
- 1:12:17SPEAKER_03: That's that's definitely, you know, I'm not stepping on him for that, but uh, you know, I think it just kind of it was a very old school approach, and you know, all the all the science and and and everything is pointing towards, you know, like look at the NHL this year, they've actually dialed back their their preseason and and all that stuff, right?
- 1:12:34SPEAKER_03: Players gotta show up in shape now.
- 1:12:36SPEAKER_03: And yeah, you can get on guys if they don't show up in shape.
- 1:12:38SPEAKER_03: Absolutely.
- 1:12:39SPEAKER_03: It should reflect in their ice time and you have honest conversations with them uh in between you know praxis and games.
- 1:12:45SPEAKER_03: But you know, I think uh we gotta we gotta kind of move into uh you know a little bit doing things a little bit smarter and drop some of this kind of macho egocentric old school kind of mentality coaching, right?
- 1:13:00SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I want to build on that a little bit, Jeff.
- 1:13:03SPEAKER_05: You just said something that kind of piqued my interest.
- 1:13:05SPEAKER_05: I mean, some of these kids are gonna be meeting with investigators, and so uh not only are they gonna have the mental toll of being on the backside of one of their teammates uh in this horrible incident, but on top of it, does it add a whole nother element to it?
- 1:13:27SPEAKER_05: Because are they thinking about maybe my roster spot?
- 1:13:32SPEAKER_05: Um what's it it almost kind of seems like a uh uh double whammy, maybe in some ways.
- 1:13:40SPEAKER_05: Am I off there?
- 1:13:41SPEAKER_03: Yeah, no, you're definitely not off.
- 1:13:43SPEAKER_03: I mean, when a young athlete feels that their their their future depends on kind of staying quiet about an incident, you know, because maybe their ice time and their career could be affected, it creates an enormous psychological burden.
- 1:13:55SPEAKER_03: Like, you know, you have that kind of, you know, okay, I want to do the right thing by my teammate, but I also have to look out for myself and my career.
- 1:14:02SPEAKER_03: And if I feel that speaking out and it gets back to, you know, the coach or or um, you know, the the people doing the investigation, like, you know, obviously I really feel for these kids, right?
- 1:14:13SPEAKER_03: They're going through something traumatic, and then now they have to uh you know have that kind of secondary weight on them.
- 1:14:20SPEAKER_03: But um, you know, I think you you really can't hurt you you can't um be upset with someone for just telling the truth the way that they see things.
- 1:14:30SPEAKER_03: Um, you know, I think that, you know, for me specifically, you know, I've been through uh my my I have two similar kind of things that have happened in my career as a player.
- 1:14:40SPEAKER_03: Uh one time I was at LA Kings rookie camp, and we basically went to Manhattan Beach and and uh we did a thousand lunges on the beach, like in uh in every way, shape, or form that you could do a lunge.
- 1:14:51SPEAKER_03: And this is all the rookies, right?
- 1:14:53SPEAKER_03: Uh uh there's only a few guys who are draft picks, probably about a quarter of the camp, and the rest of them are you know guys who are prospects.
- 1:14:59SPEAKER_03: And uh, you know, I remember there they were making sure that we were well hydrated, but that was a mental grind.
- 1:15:05SPEAKER_03: It was about an hour of uh uh of of you know in the hot sun and doing lunges.
- 1:15:10SPEAKER_03: And I still remember this one big Slovakian D-man.
- 1:15:13SPEAKER_03: He he he must have missed the memo for putting sunscreen on because he was absolutely red as a tomato at the end of it.
- 1:15:20SPEAKER_03: And we all and we we all got to like jump in the in the ocean and everything, and and you know, that's the worst thing that happened that time was someone got a bad sunburn, right?
- 1:15:29SPEAKER_03: So it you know, it's kind of uh I I don't know the you know, it sounded what like what they were doing was you know pretty physical and just the heat factor.
- 1:15:39SPEAKER_03: Um, but you know, everybody got through that and it was kind of like camaraderie as a group because we got through that exercise together, going throughout the rest of that camp together.
- 1:15:48SPEAKER_03: We felt like we were closer.
- 1:15:49SPEAKER_03: So I understand the exercise.
- 1:15:52SPEAKER_03: It's just like, you know, there were so many misses as far as you know, the the training staff, you know, hydration, and also just like, you know, I want to tell kids and players out there to just put your hand up and just say, I'm not feeling good.
- 1:16:04SPEAKER_03: If something feels off, respect yourself, respect your body.
- 1:16:08SPEAKER_03: You're not soft, you want to keep yourself safe, right?
- 1:16:11SPEAKER_03: And I didn't I don't feel like that there was an environment where that was an option.
- 1:16:16SPEAKER_03: It was like, hey, we're gonna join the military today, and you better make it through, right?
- 1:16:20SPEAKER_03: So I think that's where the disconnect was, in my opinion.
- 1:16:24SPEAKER_07: You you touch on something that has been really bothering me about this whole incident.
- 1:16:29SPEAKER_07: Um, and I mentioned it last week.
- 1:16:31SPEAKER_07: I mean, this is 2026.
- 1:16:33SPEAKER_07: We have seen this happen, whether it was Northwestern football back in the 90s or other and pro camps, pro sport camps.
- 1:16:41SPEAKER_07: And this is a college camp.
- 1:16:43SPEAKER_07: Granted, it's D1, but we we see this even at the high school level, the the club level, where physical fitness becomes this um this almost as rite of passage.
- 1:16:54SPEAKER_07: It's a leveling agent as a coach, you know, you can only pull so much skill out, but you can definitely make sure that you've got the stamina and conditioning.
- 1:17:03SPEAKER_07: But how how do we allow this type of a culture in 2026 where we're almost equating a college hockey team, or it could be a high school hockey team or triple A or A hockey team, to a military unit?
- 1:17:17SPEAKER_07: They're not even equatable.
- 1:17:19SPEAKER_07: And you know, I I'm just wondering from just the the mental aspect, um, because I believe this is on the coach, the coach sets the tone.
- 1:17:29SPEAKER_07: How do we train our coaches to kind of understand that we know some guys that know the coach at ASU?
- 1:17:38SPEAKER_07: I don't know him, but my my like read feels like he wants this to be his identity and he takes it personally.
- 1:17:45SPEAKER_07: It's about more about him and less about his players.
- 1:17:48SPEAKER_07: Is that a reasonable assumption?
- 1:17:50SPEAKER_07: And if that's the case, how do we change that mindset amongst coaches?
- 1:17:54SPEAKER_07: Because that's dangerous.
- 1:17:55SPEAKER_03: Yeah, you know what, uh Jared, I got that exact same read.
- 1:17:59SPEAKER_03: That's funny you said that because you know it sounded like they had a down year the year before, and that his uh his ego was like, you know what, these guys better know they're coming in, and that they're not gonna do that to me again, right?
- 1:18:10SPEAKER_03: That's and that's just like obviously not knowing, you know, any personalities within the situation, just like you know, that was a pretty uh the athletic article was pretty in-depth.
- 1:18:20SPEAKER_03: So that's the read that I got off of the article as well.
- 1:18:24SPEAKER_03: And yeah, I just think that it's uh you need to just really think about what you're doing as a coach, right?
- 1:18:30SPEAKER_03: Like, why are we coaching?
- 1:18:32SPEAKER_03: Sometimes you have to, and I understand every every coach wants to be successful, we want to win, we're all competitive.
- 1:18:38SPEAKER_03: That's why we are coaches, right?
- 1:18:39SPEAKER_03: That's why we're choosing to, you know, uh give up our time and and uh and effort and and try to make a difference in these kids' lives, but we need to realize that we need to make a positive difference.
- 1:18:49SPEAKER_03: And what your job is is to you know pick the players and then uh give them the environment to create their own culture within their team, right?
- 1:19:00SPEAKER_03: Your culture might not be their culture every single year.
- 1:19:03SPEAKER_03: You might have a different play, uh different group of players than you've had in the past four or five years.
- 1:19:08SPEAKER_03: Maybe you have a more skilled team, maybe you're not as physical.
- 1:19:11SPEAKER_03: So why are you trying to take players that with that that are born and have gotten to an amazing high level of hockey with a certain skill set and trying to, you know, just kind of pigeonhole them and we got to be tough and and and we're gonna be like military mindset.
- 1:19:29SPEAKER_03: Like, you know, I think that just kind of uh it's short-sighted, right?
- 1:19:32SPEAKER_03: Every year you got to take your group and say, hey, who are we?
- 1:19:35SPEAKER_03: And like allow them to uh to talk about it too, right?
- 1:19:38SPEAKER_03: I think the best teams I've ever been on is is teams where you know you have guys who aren't even wearing the C or the A and they're trick, they're they're stepping up in the room and saying things, and everybody feels comfortable and you kind of create your own identity, right?
- 1:19:50SPEAKER_03: So, you know, I just think like my message for coaches would be, you know, going into each season, like allow your group to find out who they are as a group, and then obviously you put your stamp on it by you know, you know, making sure that they they have uh you know like systems in place.
- 1:20:07SPEAKER_03: Like, yeah, you want to make sure that they're in great shape.
- 1:20:09SPEAKER_03: Like you can things that they can control.
- 1:20:12SPEAKER_03: Um, you definitely want to make sure that they're doing those things, but the identity of the team might change from year to year, and that's that's not a reflection of you.
- 1:20:19SPEAKER_03: You're you're coaching a new a new group, and I think that's uh you know something that that all coaches could probably take away from this situation.
- 1:20:28SPEAKER_05: Jeff, you touched just a little bit ago on you know, creating an environment where players can feel comfortable raising their hand and saying, I'm not okay.
- 1:20:40SPEAKER_05: Uh it sounds like that's a good teaching aspect that a coach could teach the kids as well.
- 1:20:46SPEAKER_05: Hey, if you're not feeling okay in any of these workouts, I want you to be able to raise your hand.
- 1:20:50SPEAKER_05: So not only giving the player a tip and some guidance on how to deal with that, but also uh letting the players know that that's acceptable within the team environment for them to do.
- 1:21:03SPEAKER_05: Are there any other tips you have for coaches out there to help uh prevent maybe some of these uh uh incidents like this to occur and also foster that it's it's acceptable to say, you know what, it's just too much for me right now.
- 1:21:20SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I think uh, you know, you hit the nail on the head.
- 1:21:22SPEAKER_03: I think from a physical part of the game, right?
- 1:21:25SPEAKER_03: If you have pain, dizziness, you know, headaches, nausea, whatever you're feeling, some fatigue, something feels different, just let's just be let's be adults here, put our hands up and and uh and as coaches, like just accept that, okay, let's just take a second.
- 1:21:40SPEAKER_03: Um, you know, if a kid does it 10 times in a row and he's trying to get out of every workout, that's a different story.
- 1:21:45SPEAKER_03: Like, you know, we have to have some common sense too.
- 1:21:48SPEAKER_03: But, you know, the one thing I want to flag is just, you know, from an emotional and a mental side of things, like as a coach, you just want to be an open door, right?
- 1:21:57SPEAKER_03: And oftentimes, you know, I think as men and as human beings, we we hear someone say something, you know, from an emotional or mental aspect, they're like, you know, I'm feeling anxious, I'm feeling overwhelmed, you know, I can't focus.
- 1:22:10SPEAKER_03: I've raised uh I've racing thoughts, you know, I'm getting down on myself.
- 1:22:13SPEAKER_03: And so I think sometimes as coaches, they feel like, I need to provide a solution for this, like I need to fix this.
- 1:22:19SPEAKER_03: How can I help them fix this?
- 1:22:20SPEAKER_03: But you also need to realize that sometimes just being an open door for them to just vent about something that they're feeling, you know, you you'd be surprised how much the times where, you know, with my work that I I just have conversations with with kids for you know 20 to 30 minutes, and and you know, a lot of the times I'm just giving them um you know an avenue to to express themselves and and and a lot of times they sort out their own kind of problems along the way.
- 1:22:46SPEAKER_03: It's kind of funny, funny the way it works that way, right?
- 1:22:49SPEAKER_03: Like, you know, my my kind of um approach to you know mindset is is more from a mentorship ship.
- 1:22:56SPEAKER_03: Like, you know, I don't have uh you know a background in psychology or anything like that.
- 1:23:00SPEAKER_03: It's just it it and that's just I've I've found that you know allowing kids to to you know feel comfortable with you, uh, and this is tough for for a lot of coaches and a lot of like men, and and it's something that's okay that it's tough, but it doesn't mean that we can't get better at this and can't uh you know just become more of an open door and accepting that like sometimes when you know physical, emotional, mental things come up from your teammates, like you want to be that that big brother to them.
- 1:23:25SPEAKER_03: You got to take your coach hat off for a second, and you gotta just say, hey, like how how can I, you know, I want to support you, I want to listen to you.
- 1:23:32SPEAKER_03: Let's let's like tell me everything you're feeling, and then we'll find a solution together when the time comes.
- 1:23:37SPEAKER_03: Or if you just want to talk about it, that's okay too.
- 1:23:42SPEAKER_05: Well, Jeff, I uh I know you were traveling over on your way to Winnipeg.
- 1:23:46SPEAKER_05: Uh, what's your favorite jaunt for food in Winnipeg?
- 1:23:50SPEAKER_05: Uh, what's what's what the dinner plans look like tonight?
- 1:23:54SPEAKER_03: Um, I'm going to a place downtown called Kevin's Bistro.
- 1:23:58SPEAKER_03: So uh I one of the um one of my colleagues I'm traveling with picked it.
- 1:24:05SPEAKER_03: So uh yeah, definitely down.
- 1:24:07SPEAKER_03: I'm definitely uh excited for that.
- 1:24:09SPEAKER_03: Every time I come here, I go to a different restaurant and they're all really good.
- 1:24:12SPEAKER_03: So I don't sleep on Winnipeg for some for some good uh some good eats.
- 1:24:16SPEAKER_03: I know uh you know sometimes the peg uh you know takes some hits, especially in Canada.
- 1:24:21SPEAKER_03: Like people a lot a lot of people from uh you know from Winnipeg move to Toronto and I feel like they they get razzed a little bit, but every time I've come here, I've had a good time.
- 1:24:29SPEAKER_03: So don't sleep on Winnipeg, people.
- 1:24:31SPEAKER_07: Well we don't want to mention Connor Hellibuck anywhere near uh near near the the the street there, I'm sure.
- 1:24:37SPEAKER_03: So yeah, well when I when I when I try to get people that I'm going to dinner with to uh watch the watch the leaves home opener tonight uh with me after the after dinner, I'm not sure they're gonna be too excited about that either.
- 1:24:50SPEAKER_09: No, no, for sure.
- 1:24:51SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 1:24:52SPEAKER_07: You know, I you know Jeff, I appreciate you coming on with us.
- 1:24:55SPEAKER_07: You know, the couple of observations that I've made in this process, you know, I I don't know if that coach exhibits a lot of joy in what he's doing.
- 1:25:05SPEAKER_07: It sucks to lose.
- 1:25:06SPEAKER_07: We're all competitive.
- 1:25:07SPEAKER_07: And there are moments where you say, gosh, we've got to get tougher.
- 1:25:11SPEAKER_07: I don't know if you call somebody soft, but it's like we need situational toughness.
- 1:25:15SPEAKER_07: And just to give these coaches some perspective, when your team's losing, we we had a we had a year last year, and Drew can attest to this.
- 1:25:22SPEAKER_07: Um our our team was I I think we lost almost 10, 11 games in a row.
- 1:25:30SPEAKER_07: Um and the knee-jerk reaction would be to like be harder on these kids and push them harder and make them, you know, skate and make them do we took the opposite.
- 1:25:40SPEAKER_07: We started talking about how tough this season is going to make them as they go on their journey.
- 1:25:45SPEAKER_07: And we get in the playoffs and we make it to the quarters, and we're we lost in overtime to get to the semi.
- 1:25:51SPEAKER_07: And I don't see that there's any difference in whether you're pro D1.
- 1:25:55SPEAKER_07: I mean, the people respond to I don't want to say positivity, and we're always gonna be like, Yay, team, we there's no participation trophies.
- 1:26:05SPEAKER_07: But it just feels like when we hear these word phrases like, well, back when I played, or right, you know, this and you need this, you're this is soft.
- 1:26:13SPEAKER_07: We've got to change our our our philosophy on that.
- 1:26:15SPEAKER_07: I just feel like we need to, as coaches, omit a lot of the language that we're so used to and and that we've we've been coached with.
- 1:26:25SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I I I'm really happy to hear that you guys took that approach, you know.
- 1:26:29SPEAKER_03: I like I I always, you know, sometimes when I jump on the ice with uh, you know, some of my clients, like I'm like, let's do something fun to start it off today.
- 1:26:37SPEAKER_03: Like, and they come on so serious, I want to work on my shot, I want to work on this.
- 1:26:40SPEAKER_03: And I'm just like, all right, let's just like, you know, rip this tennis ball for like five, 10 minutes.
- 1:26:45SPEAKER_03: And you see a big smile on their face, and they're just they become kids again, right?
- 1:26:49SPEAKER_03: And like I noticed that about myself throughout my career, is like whenever I return to fun in some way, uh, whether that started in practice or you know, playing sewer ball before the game or all these different things that you do, and and you you gotta realize, like, you know, sometimes for these kids to realize that, you know, once you're once you're done the ride, like, you know, the reason why we're becoming coaches because like we want to be surrounded surround ourselves with that fun again, right?
- 1:27:14SPEAKER_03: So winning's fun, losing's not, but it doesn't mean that in that in that whole process we can't return to that, right?
- 1:27:20SPEAKER_03: And and it's and it's funny, like, you know, you always end up playing the best when you when you kind of are on that are on that uh like you're on that kind of fine line between like fun and then like sharpness, right?
- 1:27:33SPEAKER_03: Like like making sure you're still dialed in, you're prepped for the game, but then you have that lightness about you that and and it just creates confidence with the group, right?
- 1:27:41SPEAKER_03: So I always find that that's the one thing you can kind of see what in a losing streak is that like the little things aren't fun, like leading up to the game, there's a little everybody's tense, right?
- 1:27:51SPEAKER_03: So, you know, as coaches, you know, a lot of times you got to lean onto your leaders and uh because it it really does have to come from inside the room, but we can definitely uh you know, you know, make sure that we're um you know, guiding them.
- 1:28:03SPEAKER_03: And it sounds like the way that you guys approach that situation, um, I'm really glad it worked out for you because you know that's that's definitely the new wave of of playing, and it's a lot more fun to be a coach.
- 1:28:13SPEAKER_03: Like no one wants to be a grouch all the time and uh be hard on people, right?
- 1:28:16SPEAKER_03: Like I think like going back to what I said at the very start, like you know, shame-based coaching does not equal mental toughness.
- 1:28:25SPEAKER_03: You can have a short little you know jump where you kind of got a rise out of someone, but if you want to you want to drive success and you want to build you know character players uh at a high level throughout the year, you know, you got to rely on your rely on uh you know just showing up, you know, being support for them, being a friend to them, you know, not always having to have your coach hat on.
- 1:28:46SPEAKER_03: Like you're allowed to have you know different hats on as a coach.
- 1:28:49SPEAKER_03: There's no there's no one telling you what to do, right?
- 1:28:52SPEAKER_03: So sounds like you guys had a great approach.
- 1:28:54SPEAKER_03: So yeah, I'm really it was touch and go.
- 1:28:56SPEAKER_06: It was touch and go.
- 1:28:57SPEAKER_03: Drew kept me sane.
- 1:29:02SPEAKER_05: Well, that's Jeff Brown from the Mindful Hockey Club, where he helps teach young athletes to recognize and control negative self-talk, detach from fear or failure, and build a bulletproof mindset.
- 1:29:16SPEAKER_05: Jeff, as always, a pleasure having you on the show.
- 1:29:19SPEAKER_05: Thanks for joining us and helping us touch on this topic today and uh enjoy the great dinner.

- 1:29:43SPEAKER_03: Uh I do a lot of my sessions um with uh with my you know clients and students uh via you know Microsoft Teams and FaceTime.
- 1:29:52SPEAKER_03: And uh, you know, from this last time uh we were on a podcast, I picked up a couple St.
- 1:29:56SPEAKER_03: Louis residents and uh you know some some amazing young players uh you know, thanks to you guys.
- 1:30:01SPEAKER_03: So, you know, I I think there's a lot of similarities between Toronto and St.
- 1:30:05SPEAKER_03: Louis, but uh you guys definitely have a beat with the better, better cuisine, better barbecue.
- 1:30:10SPEAKER_03: So I gotta get down to uh to test it out for myself, boys.
- 1:30:13SPEAKER_05: Uh we'd love to give you a tour, Jeff.
- 1:30:15SPEAKER_05: Let us know when you're coming in.
- 1:30:17SPEAKER_07: All right.
- 1:30:17SPEAKER_07: Thanks, Jeff.
- 1:30:18SPEAKER_07: Good to talk to you.
- 1:30:19SPEAKER_07: Thanks a lot, guys.
- 1:30:20SPEAKER_05: Take care, take care.
