- 2:28Speaker 5: Pepper, Hello you, sir, I'm great, thanks for having me on.
- 2:31Speaker 3: Welcome to the new digs here.
- 2:33Speaker 5: This is awesome.
- 2:33Speaker 3: This is so cool. It is awesome. We're it'll be
- 2:36Speaker 3: even better when we learn how to operate everything. You know.
- 2:38Speaker 3: Also have Audrey Kahn, who is a small business liaison
- 2:42Speaker 3: for the city. Welcome to the show. Hi, Dave, thank
- 2:44Speaker 3: you for being here making your debut on the show.
- 2:47Speaker 6: Yeah, I'm stoked. I'm a big fan.
- 2:48Speaker 3: All right, Well, you got Emmett Pepper here, so Emma,
- 2:51Speaker 3: we will walk you through anything that you that you
- 2:53Speaker 3: don't know. Sergeant Pepper, I'm sure you've never heard that before.
- 2:58Speaker 3: Doctors to doctor doctor Parker's but before we get to
- 3:02Speaker 3: Audrey to talk about some small business things going on
- 3:05Speaker 3: in Charles. I want to ask you about city council.
- 3:08Speaker 3: What's going on in city council. You got a meeting tonight,
- 3:11Speaker 3: you guys, what are you taking a look at. Let's
- 3:13Speaker 3: get to that first.
- 3:14Speaker 5: Oh, well, city council we have there's no city council
- 3:18Speaker 5: meetings tonight tomorrow. We have a mandated one that we
- 3:22Speaker 5: have to do for like five minutes to do something
- 3:24Speaker 5: with taxes. But there is actually a city council meeting tonight.
- 3:28Speaker 5: That's not the full council, it's a committee meeting. And
- 3:30Speaker 5: the issue that I seem to keep talking about a
- 3:32Speaker 5: lot in the last couple of months has been street sweeping,
- 3:35Speaker 5: and so we're looking at the ways just to do
- 3:37Speaker 5: that in the best way. I've spent a lot more
- 3:40Speaker 5: time than I ever thought I would on this issue,
- 3:41Speaker 5: but I did want to. I want to get it right,
- 3:43Speaker 5: and so there's a little bit of a sunk cost
- 3:45Speaker 5: fallacy here where I've already spent enough time and I
- 3:47Speaker 5: want to finish it through and get it to what's.
- 3:49Speaker 3: A big I don't want to say controversy, that's not
- 3:51Speaker 3: the right word, but what's the big discussion about about sweeping? Yeah,
- 3:54Speaker 3: because I know we've had text of the show about
- 3:56Speaker 3: I had the mayor on on the show last Monday
- 3:58Speaker 3: and we had several tech about it.
- 4:00Speaker 5: What's the yeah, I mean, I think so we so
- 4:03Speaker 5: the East End of Charleston has weekly street sweeping. We
- 4:05Speaker 5: don't have that anywhere else in the city because because
- 4:09Speaker 5: we also are in the East End have and it's
- 4:11Speaker 5: where it happened a little bit. They also have parking
- 4:15Speaker 5: enforcements to make sure that that's a bit that's possible.
- 4:18Speaker 5: So some people say, well, why do we you know,
- 4:21Speaker 5: why does that happen? And you know, and we've I've
- 4:23Speaker 5: put a lot of work into it, and you know,
- 4:25Speaker 5: I think basically where we are right now is seventy
- 4:27Speaker 5: eighty percent of the of the populace that lives there
- 4:30Speaker 5: and is affected by that likes having it because they're
- 4:33Speaker 5: concerned that because there's so much on street parking. I
- 4:36Speaker 5: personally don't have a driveway. A lot of people don't
- 4:37Speaker 5: have driveways, you know that they're not able to sweep it. So,
- 4:41Speaker 5: you know, so we most people want that, but there's
- 4:44Speaker 5: some people, of course, who you know, there's there's a
- 4:47Speaker 5: different side of different issues on every issue exactly. But
- 4:50Speaker 5: you know, so one of the thing that I the
- 4:52Speaker 5: bill I introduced is just to so getting into the
- 4:55Speaker 5: walky weeds of it. What this sweeping on one side
- 4:58Speaker 5: of the street happens at noon to two the other
- 4:59Speaker 5: side on a noon or just to harmonize that, to
- 5:02Speaker 5: make it new to two for both sides. And so
- 5:04Speaker 5: that's that's what we're That's the exciting thing that we're
- 5:06Speaker 5: talking about today.
- 5:07Speaker 3: That has taken a lot of time. It is amazing though.
- 5:09Speaker 3: And when I have the mayor on she talks about this,
- 5:11Speaker 3: and I would say the mayors and council people and
- 5:14Speaker 3: other municipalities that probably say the same thing. You know,
- 5:17Speaker 3: what really gets people going? And she talks about this
- 5:20Speaker 3: as us the mayor of Hurricane and Saint Albans is
- 5:23Speaker 3: trick or treating, Christmas parades, you know, and things of
- 5:27Speaker 3: that nature. Fireworks, that's what gets people going. But hey,
- 5:30Speaker 3: at least they're involved, right, that's right. Andrey Khan small
- 5:34Speaker 3: business liaison with City Charleston. Tell us about what you do.
- 5:37Speaker 6: Sure, So the mayor and city council created my position
- 5:41Speaker 6: a couple of years ago in partnership with the city
- 5:43Speaker 6: collector as well to just kind of create a person
- 5:47Speaker 6: who could be hands on with local businesses and whether
- 5:51Speaker 6: that's something which is me connecting them with local resources
- 5:56Speaker 6: all the way to the less slashy, less exciting stuff
- 5:58Speaker 6: like getting their business sins or filing paperwork or taxes
- 6:01Speaker 6: and fees and things like that. So but I'm kind
- 6:04Speaker 6: of a boost on the ground person that's out talking
- 6:06Speaker 6: to the businesses. I go and check and see what
- 6:08Speaker 6: they might need, maybe something that they need from the city.
- 6:11Speaker 6: I can take information back to administration say hey, this
- 6:14Speaker 6: business needs this, how can we help? And so yeah,
- 6:18Speaker 6: that's kind of that's a five hundred foot view of
- 6:22Speaker 6: what I do. But I I get to talk to
- 6:24Speaker 6: a lot of the businesses in the city and get
- 6:26Speaker 6: to know them. And the past couple of years have
- 6:28Speaker 6: been really exciting because I'm the first person to hold
- 6:29Speaker 6: the position.
- 6:30Speaker 3: And talk about the state of small and neither one
- 6:33Speaker 3: of you an accountcil when you could jump in here
- 6:35Speaker 3: if you want to the state of small business in Charleston.
- 6:37Speaker 6: Sure, So that was one of the reasons why we
- 6:40Speaker 6: were excited to come on today because Charleston really is
- 6:42Speaker 6: a business friendly City and there are tons of local
- 6:45Speaker 6: resources that are there for businesses, but as far as
- 6:48Speaker 6: the state of local businesses goes, I mean, I'm constantly
- 6:51Speaker 6: at ribbon cuttings and grand openings and anniversaries. I even
- 6:55Speaker 6: have a ribbon cutting grand opening today on the West
- 6:58Speaker 6: side for a business called the Wine Down.
- 7:01Speaker 3: I've heard about that. It's like like a wine bar.
- 7:04Speaker 6: Yeah, so that's going to be really exciting because we
- 7:06Speaker 6: are about to roll out our Capital City Sipping stroll
- 7:10Speaker 6: in that area in the Elk City area, so we're
- 7:12Speaker 6: going to have a poda down there, so that'll be
- 7:14Speaker 6: perfect for this business. So yeah, I mean that's just
- 7:17Speaker 6: an example of what a day to day might look like,
- 7:19Speaker 6: is just attending a ribbon cutting and you know, showing
- 7:23Speaker 6: up for those businesses that might be new or maybe
- 7:25Speaker 6: they're celebrating a ten year anniversary. Actually there's going to
- 7:28Speaker 6: be a thirty year anniversary for Sam's Uptown Cafe this year,
- 7:32Speaker 6: so any that's that's kind of the range, right, So
- 7:34Speaker 6: brand new business, the Wine Down, all the way to
- 7:36Speaker 6: a thirty year business.
- 7:38Speaker 3: And when you talk about the Elk City district over there,
- 7:41Speaker 3: I mean it's been really and we've talked about it
- 7:43Speaker 3: on the show a lot Audrey and the councilman. It's
- 7:46Speaker 3: been an area that's seen a lot of growth, especially
- 7:49Speaker 3: in the restaurant sector of things.
- 7:51Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 7:51Speaker 3: Absolutely, So.
- 7:52Speaker 6: We have Sergio's and then he opened Albuquerque recently. We're
- 7:55Speaker 6: about to have an Appalachian mercantile place called Latcha that's
- 7:59Speaker 6: going to open down there. We had a salon that
- 8:01Speaker 6: opened recently a few months ago. Yeah, just in my
- 8:05Speaker 6: two years since I've been here, I've seen a lot
- 8:07Speaker 6: of growth and things happening down in that particular area.
- 8:09Speaker 3: Counselmen follow up on what she said about the state
- 8:12Speaker 3: of small business in Charleston. Your opinion, Yeah, I mean.
- 8:16Speaker 5: There's a lot there's there's a lot of people interested
- 8:17Speaker 5: in coming here. There's a lot of there's We're doing
- 8:19Speaker 5: everything we can to to help them. I mean that
- 8:22Speaker 5: was one of my when I worked with the mayor
- 8:24Speaker 5: and established the position, is that you know, there's a
- 8:28Speaker 5: lot that someone wants to start a new business. It's
- 8:30Speaker 5: not intuitive necessarily some of the things that you have
- 8:33Speaker 5: to go through.
- 8:33Speaker 3: And so you know, someone who's.
- 8:35Speaker 5: Really good at, you know, doing whatever their business does
- 8:37Speaker 5: doesn't mean they're necessarily is good at the other stuff.
- 8:39Speaker 5: So yeah, this is that's the goal is to kind
- 8:42Speaker 5: of like shepher them through that process, get everything going
- 8:44Speaker 5: so that they don't find out years later they forgot
- 8:46Speaker 5: to do something and then it's more expensive to fix
- 8:48Speaker 5: and and so that's that's the goal is, you know,
- 8:51Speaker 5: let's make sure we you know, got all the licenses
- 8:53Speaker 5: and got all the registrations and stuff and and have
- 8:55Speaker 5: it planned out so that there's no problems going down
- 8:57Speaker 5: the road.
- 8:57Speaker 3: And that's a very good point, uh, that you bring
- 9:00Speaker 3: up because I learned this in my days in state government.
- 9:02Speaker 3: That's kind of one of the jobs that I had
- 9:04Speaker 3: within the Secretary of State's office was I I worked
- 9:07Speaker 3: with a lot of businesses through the business one stop
- 9:09Speaker 3: center there. It was on Washington Street at the time.
- 9:13Speaker 3: And and the issue sometimes we would have entrepreneurs that
- 9:17Speaker 3: would come in that were so good at what they did,
- 9:19Speaker 3: whether it was photography or or you know whatever, but
- 9:23Speaker 3: they weren't always as good at at handling the licensing
- 9:28Speaker 3: and the certifications that are needed and getting this person
- 9:31Speaker 3: in that person. But also I think sometimes businesses, oddly
- 9:35Speaker 3: you can speak to this, I think that they don't
- 9:37Speaker 3: know what sort of help is available out there to
- 9:41Speaker 3: I mean, I'm a big believer in the small in
- 9:43Speaker 3: the SBA, I'm a big believer in the in the
- 9:46Speaker 3: organizations like that Will Miller and his group, you know
- 9:49Speaker 3: that do great things in the city, not I mean
- 9:51Speaker 3: with within the state. There's there's a lot of help
- 9:54Speaker 3: out there, a lot of counseling and a lot of
- 9:56Speaker 3: and a lot of that for businesses. There's no charge.
- 9:58Speaker 6: Yeah, absolutely, the free services are what's really cool because
- 10:02Speaker 6: just like you said, Will Miller, I mean the SBDC,
- 10:04Speaker 6: the Small Business Development Center has a location here in Charleston,
- 10:08Speaker 6: Like you can walk up and talk to someone and
- 10:09Speaker 6: sometimes that is you know a little bit of red
- 10:12Speaker 6: tape where someone is trying to call and they're trying
- 10:14Speaker 6: to find a person. I mean, there are places embedded
- 10:16Speaker 6: right here in Charleston that have offices that you can
- 10:19Speaker 6: walk up to and you're talking Charleston, Aarry Alliance that
- 10:22Speaker 6: has a business incubator where you're talking Workforce West Virginia,
- 10:25Speaker 6: which actually has a free version of Indeed, so they
- 10:27Speaker 6: help job seekers and employers. You have Base Innovations, which
- 10:32Speaker 6: helps veterans in their families who are trying to open businesses,
- 10:35Speaker 6: and like you said, the business one stop location. I mean,
- 10:37Speaker 6: there's a litany of resources here Advantage Valley, like I
- 10:40Speaker 6: could go on with the people that I work with.
- 10:42Speaker 5: And the good thing is that people don't have to
- 10:43Speaker 5: remember all that that she just said. Living in the
- 10:47Speaker 5: city of Charleston, just call Audrey and then she'll help
- 10:49Speaker 5: you get I's got the list.
- 10:50Speaker 3: So if somebody is thinking about starting a business, I
- 10:53Speaker 3: mean again, sometimes people have skills set and they think, man,
- 10:56Speaker 3: I could do this coffee shop, whatever the case may be,
- 11:00Speaker 3: and then they reach out to you. I want to
- 11:02Speaker 3: start a business. Let's call it Dave's Tanning, Salon and taxidermy. Okay,
- 11:09Speaker 3: all right, all right, so I want to start a business. Okay,
- 11:13Speaker 3: I make that phone call to you. What I just
- 11:15Speaker 3: I say, I need help? Sure, what do you do?
- 11:18Speaker 4: Yeah?
- 11:18Speaker 6: So the first thing we want to do is check
- 11:20Speaker 6: I'll get you a business registration. So we want to
- 11:22Speaker 6: look at your starting your business license process. Because I'll
- 11:26Speaker 6: send you over to the development services team. You can
- 11:28Speaker 6: make sure that your business is in the proper zone
- 11:30Speaker 6: or district. And then actually there is at the City
- 11:34Speaker 6: Service Center sort of our own version of a one
- 11:37Speaker 6: stop location where you start with development services, you find
- 11:39Speaker 6: out your business, where you want to put your business.
- 11:41Speaker 6: You're in the right district, you can schedule your building inspection.
- 11:44Speaker 6: Over there, you can get your business registration application, and
- 11:47Speaker 6: then that's where you will return to turn everything in.
- 11:50Speaker 6: So we would start there, and then for Dave's tanning
- 11:53Speaker 6: and taxidermy, we would talk about things.
- 11:57Speaker 5: I know absolutely nothing about it. I think I've seen
- 11:59Speaker 5: one of those before. Its just somewhere in the state.
- 12:02Speaker 3: It's a southern West Virginia thing. That's what we're doing
- 12:06Speaker 3: in southern West Virginia.
- 12:08Speaker 6: So yeah, So I would also connect you with local resources.
- 12:10Speaker 6: So it sounds like you might want to talk to
- 12:12Speaker 6: a business coach at the SBDC. Maybe you need to
- 12:14Speaker 6: go through the University of Charleston's Accelerator program and let
- 12:17Speaker 6: them teach you how to do some back end things
- 12:19Speaker 6: like taxes or whatever. So I can immediately start you
- 12:23Speaker 6: with resources, and then we can also do the unfund
- 12:26Speaker 6: paperwork stuff and get through that as well, so that
- 12:28Speaker 6: you're set up.
- 12:29Speaker 3: All right, counselmen, before we let you guys go, what
- 12:33Speaker 3: what would you say to people that are thinking about
- 12:36Speaker 3: starting a business. Why should they choose Charleston to do
- 12:38Speaker 3: it because there's you know, and we had a lot
- 12:40Speaker 3: of great locations they could but why should they choose
- 12:42Speaker 3: Charleston in your opinion.
- 12:44Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean I think I think Charleston has an
- 12:46Speaker 5: advantage because there are there is a lot of foot traffic.
- 12:49Speaker 5: Art population I think doubles every day, you know, during
- 12:52Speaker 5: the during the weekday. So there's a lot of people here,
- 12:54Speaker 5: you know, and we we have we have the support.
- 12:57Speaker 5: We're willing to do what we can to help people,
- 12:59Speaker 5: you know, make it, make it happen. There's there are vacancies,
- 13:02Speaker 5: there are places for people to go.
- 13:04Speaker 3: All right, how do they reach you?
- 13:06Speaker 8: Sure?
- 13:06Speaker 6: So my office number, you would just call the regular
- 13:09Speaker 6: city number and then my extension, So that's three zero
- 13:12Speaker 6: four three four eight eight thousand extension three zero three.
- 13:15Speaker 6: But the best way to get me would probably be email,
- 13:17Speaker 6: because like I said, I am boots on the ground.
- 13:18Speaker 6: I'm out a lot talking to businesses. So it's it's
- 13:21Speaker 6: my first and last name. Actually, let's go with the
- 13:23Speaker 6: other one. It would just be SBL, SBL at cityf
- 13:27Speaker 6: Charleston dot org. So that's SBL for Small Business Liaison
- 13:30Speaker 6: at City off Charleston dot org.
- 13:32Speaker 3: All Right, Audrey, welcome to the show.
- 13:34Speaker 6: Yeah, I'm excited. I'm a huge fan. I'm a rabid

- 16:56Speaker 3: folks who I'm just now getting to know, Jen Potter
- 16:59Speaker 3: and her husband A Dave Either from the Maddox the
- 17:02Speaker 3: Maddox Potter Foundation. Hey, guys, welcome to the show.
- 17:06Speaker 7: Hey, good morning, Thanks for having us, Thank.
- 17:07Speaker 3: You for having Thank you for coming in today.
- 17:10Speaker 2: Jen.
- 17:10Speaker 3: I'll start with you because I've been told you were
- 17:11Speaker 3: the talker of the two. I think he said that.
- 17:15Speaker 3: I think your husband said that. With all due respect,
- 17:19Speaker 3: tell us about your son.
- 17:20Speaker 7: Sure so, our son Maddox Potter. He recently passed away
- 17:27Speaker 7: in January from a cancer called rabdomio sarcoma. Before he
- 17:34Speaker 7: was diagnosed, he was an active kid. He was a
- 17:40Speaker 7: pretty accomplished junior golfer. He had been playing golf since
- 17:45Speaker 7: the age of four. He started with a single lesson
- 17:48Speaker 7: at the first t of West Virginia and then from
- 17:51Speaker 7: there it just kind of parlayed into something that just
- 17:54Speaker 7: just captured his his spirit. I don't know what it was,
- 17:57Speaker 7: but it was something that allowed him to spend a
- 18:00Speaker 7: lot of time with his dad, and he became a
- 18:03Speaker 7: pretty good golfer and in ninth grade. In the fall
- 18:10Speaker 7: of twenty twenty three, he was starting his freshman golf
- 18:13Speaker 7: season at George Washington High School, playing a lot of golf,
- 18:17Speaker 7: practicing a lot, a lot of matches, a lot of
- 18:20Speaker 7: time on the simulator, a lot of time with the
- 18:22Speaker 7: driving range, and he started complaining of back pain. And
- 18:27Speaker 7: it's pretty easy at that point to just not brush
- 18:31Speaker 7: it off but assume that it was from golf.
- 18:34Speaker 3: Yeah, golf growing pains. I mean, that's not uncommon.
- 18:37Speaker 7: Yeah, that's right, just from all the swinging he was
- 18:39Speaker 7: doing from carrying his golf clubs, and so we went
- 18:45Speaker 7: through a few different modalities to try to get him
- 18:50Speaker 7: some relief. At you know, at first it was able
- 18:53Speaker 7: to be managed with some advil. I think we did
- 18:56Speaker 7: some steroids, thinking maybe it was just inflammation, some physical therapy,
- 19:02Speaker 7: a visit to the chiropractor, and then eventually it got
- 19:07Speaker 7: to the point where it was just nothing was really helping.
- 19:10Speaker 7: It was getting debilitating, and that's what prompted a visit
- 19:15Speaker 7: to his pediatrician and a recommendation for some MRIs, and
- 19:20Speaker 7: then things just happened in quick succession after that MRI's
- 19:27Speaker 7: major back surgery to remove a large tumor, a transfer
- 19:30Speaker 7: to Cincinnati Children's and a stage four rahabdomyosarcoma diagnosis.
- 19:37Speaker 3: And how old was he He was.
- 19:38Speaker 7: Fifteen when he was diagnosed. So we spent a year
- 19:44Speaker 7: traveling to and from Cincinnati for his treatments in I
- 19:53Speaker 7: want to say in May. He started his treatments in
- 19:56Speaker 7: December of twenty twenty three. By May of twenty twenty four,
- 19:59Speaker 7: it became apparent that the standard regimen for his cancer
- 20:04Speaker 7: was not given us the results that we needed, so
- 20:09Speaker 7: we had to change things. He did full brain and
- 20:13Speaker 7: spine proton therapy, he did traditional photon radiation. At the
- 20:19Speaker 7: end of the thirteen months that from his diagnosis to
- 20:23Speaker 7: his passing, he had gone through eight different chemotherapy treatments
- 20:28Speaker 7: or eight different protocols radiation. He'd had a surgery, and
- 20:33Speaker 7: it just became really apparent that there was nothing left
- 20:37Speaker 7: that was going to stop the disease. Maybe something that
- 20:42Speaker 7: could keep it from growing as rapidly, but nothing left
- 20:50Speaker 7: that they could do to cure him.
- 20:53Speaker 3: How rare was this particular form of cancer.
- 20:57Speaker 7: So when he was originally diagnosed, I believe the oncologists
- 21:02Speaker 7: told us that there are approximately three hundred and fifty
- 21:06Speaker 7: cases per year that they see, so I guess that
- 21:10Speaker 7: averages about one a day. I think a lot of
- 21:13Speaker 7: times when people think of childhood cancer, they think more
- 21:17Speaker 7: leukemia or brain tumors. I think those are much more prevalent.
- 21:22Speaker 7: But his was rabdomyosarcoma, and I had only ever heard
- 21:28Speaker 7: of one other child with that. Coincidentally, it was the
- 21:34Speaker 7: daughter of a girl I went to high school with,
- 21:35Speaker 7: and she was the only other child I'd ever heard
- 21:37Speaker 7: of in that scenario. So I knew right off the
- 21:41Speaker 7: bat that we probably needed to make our way to
- 21:46Speaker 7: a more specialized treatment center, and so that's what prompted
- 21:50Speaker 7: us to head to Cincinnati.
- 21:52Speaker 3: Children's talk about I know you said he was an
- 21:55Speaker 3: avid golfer. I'm familiar with his story, even though I've
- 21:58Speaker 3: never met you. Folks told today familiary story. He was
- 22:01Speaker 3: a huge Buffalo Bills fan. Talk about what kind of
- 22:06Speaker 3: kid he was.
- 22:09Speaker 7: Maddox was a reserved kid. He was quiet, he was shy,
- 22:18Speaker 7: he was all eyes on him was something that he
- 22:23Speaker 7: just was probably a nightmare to him, like everybody looking
- 22:26Speaker 7: at him. He was very well behaved. Teachers always just
- 22:35Speaker 7: you know, they would tell us like, he's just so kind,
- 22:38Speaker 7: He's so good in school, he's so well behaved. He
- 22:41Speaker 7: made great grades. He truly was. I think he was
- 22:44Speaker 7: a very easy kid to parent. Now, granted, we were
- 22:51Speaker 7: only blessed with sixteen years with him, so we never
- 22:55Speaker 7: really got the opportunity to get into those types of
- 22:57Speaker 7: things where he's driving alone and going out a lot
- 22:59Speaker 7: and doing things like that. So that we never got
- 23:03Speaker 7: that opportunity. Who's to say what would have what would
- 23:06Speaker 7: have transpired, But for the time that we had him,
- 23:09Speaker 7: he was a very good boy. He he liked being home.
- 23:12Speaker 7: He preferred being in his own space. He was never
- 23:16Speaker 7: one of those kids that needed to be part of
- 23:18Speaker 7: a crowd. He didn't have any type of fear of
- 23:21Speaker 7: missing out or anything.
- 23:22Speaker 3: He just and he was.
- 23:24Speaker 7: Incredibly smart, incredibly intelligent. And I think that's one of
- 23:31Speaker 7: the things I think about the most is I don't
- 23:34Speaker 7: think all of his potential died with him. I think
- 23:38Speaker 7: very much so that some of the potential that he had,
- 23:43Speaker 7: it's mind and Davy's responsibility to carry that on, and
- 23:47Speaker 7: we will, and that's that's our goal. But his intelligence
- 23:49Speaker 7: and his mind, you know, I don't I don't have that.
- 23:52Speaker 7: I can't do anything with that. So that was something,
- 23:56Speaker 7: you know, that's something that I think was one of
- 23:57Speaker 7: the most heartbreaking things to me, is oh boy, what
- 24:00Speaker 7: what could he have done?
- 24:04Speaker 3: Talk about the outpouring of support from the community, because,
- 24:09Speaker 3: as I said, I was familiar with the story from
- 24:11Speaker 3: all the media coverage that it got in the paper
- 24:14Speaker 3: and radio and television and whatever. Even though Charleston is
- 24:19Speaker 3: a larger area compared to some areas of the state,
- 24:22Speaker 3: still got a bit of a small town feel, and
- 24:24Speaker 3: the community really really rallied around this young man. And
- 24:29Speaker 3: continue to rally around him and you guys and what
- 24:33Speaker 3: you're doing now talk about that community support.
- 24:35Speaker 11: That's right.
- 24:36Speaker 7: So when Maddox was first in Cincinnati and was first diagnosed,
- 24:39Speaker 7: I'll never forget Davey made a Facebook post and it
- 24:45Speaker 7: had to do with our youngest son. But what he
- 24:47Speaker 7: said was, you know, Brooks played a heck of a
- 24:49Speaker 7: basketball game tonight for his big brother, Maddix Potter, and
- 24:52Speaker 7: he tagged us at Cincinnati Children's and I remember thinking, oh,
- 24:55Speaker 7: I don't think I'm ready for that, because then you
- 24:57Speaker 7: start getting text messages and questions. And his response to
- 25:01Speaker 7: me was, well, I think the more prayers the better,
- 25:05Speaker 7: and so that kind of flipped my mindset. I was like,
- 25:08Speaker 7: you know what, You're exactly right, You're exactly right. You
- 25:11Speaker 7: know that's what we need. We need prayers and we
- 25:13Speaker 7: need support. And from there I just I started making simple,
- 25:19Speaker 7: updated posts about his progress and what he was doing.
- 25:22Speaker 7: And I think to your point, Charleston is a larger community.
- 25:27Speaker 7: It does have a small town feel, but also within
- 25:31Speaker 7: this city, we were blessed to have other smaller pockets
- 25:36Speaker 7: of support too. Golf. The golf community really stepped up
- 25:40Speaker 7: and rallied around us John Adams G. W. Holtes Elementary,
- 25:46Speaker 7: where he went to school, where his you know, younger
- 25:48Speaker 7: brother is and he has another younger brother at John Adams.
- 25:54Speaker 7: All of these little my work, his work, you know,
- 25:58Speaker 7: everybody just like they stepped as a whole. But like
- 26:01Speaker 7: within the community, there were also little pockets that supported
- 26:06Speaker 7: us too, and so it has been extraordinary. I think
- 26:10Speaker 7: that's the only way that I can describe it. I
- 26:12Speaker 7: know that people that don't live in West Virginia have
- 26:17Speaker 7: a particular view of this state. Yeah, I understand that. However,
- 26:24Speaker 7: you don't find better people than in West Virginia because
- 26:27Speaker 7: when they tell you they are praying for you, they
- 26:31Speaker 7: mean it. I mean they genuinely are. They are going
- 26:35Speaker 7: back to their churches and their communities and they're putting
- 26:37Speaker 7: you on prayer lists and they're gathering up donations for you.
- 26:41Speaker 7: I mean they mean it. So we have been incredibly blessed.
- 26:45Speaker 7: And Maddox was very very blessed in his short life.
- 26:49Speaker 3: Talk about going forward. What are you doing? I mean,
- 26:51Speaker 3: you got this foundation that you're doing. You're doing you said,
- 26:54Speaker 3: and these were your words, Jen, You said that the
- 26:58Speaker 3: kind of person that he was did not pass away
- 27:02Speaker 3: with him. The spirit is still here. Talk about what
- 27:06Speaker 3: you are doing going forward.
- 27:08Speaker 7: With this, That's right. So our goal with the Maddox
- 27:12Speaker 7: Potter Foundation is it's threefold. So we want to help
- 27:18Speaker 7: other families who unfortunately are going to be in the
- 27:22Speaker 7: same position that we are in. You know, there are
- 27:26Speaker 7: going to be new kids diagnosed every day. There are
- 27:29Speaker 7: going to be new families where the rug is yanked
- 27:32Speaker 7: completely out from under them, and it's disorienting at first,
- 27:36Speaker 7: and it really takes a long time to get your
- 27:37Speaker 7: feet back underneath you. So we want to offer support
- 27:41Speaker 7: in any way we can in that regard. We also
- 27:44Speaker 7: want to further sarcoma research. There are one hundred different
- 27:49Speaker 7: subtypes of sarcomas and a lot of these research centers
- 27:53Speaker 7: depend on private funding. So that's one of our goals.
- 27:58Speaker 7: Science just wasn't It just wasn't formatix, and that's the
- 28:01Speaker 7: bottom line. It's not ready for a lot of these kids.
- 28:03Speaker 7: And so that's the holy grail for every type of cancer,
- 28:07Speaker 7: is fine the cure. We also want to encourage the
- 28:12Speaker 7: growth of junior golf. Like I said, so much of
- 28:15Speaker 7: Maddox's life was spent on the golf course. A lot
- 28:19Speaker 7: of his character qualities were developed on the golf course,
- 28:24Speaker 7: and golf is also a fantastic sport for kids who
- 28:29Speaker 7: are going through cancer treatment. When you're going through these treatments,
- 28:32Speaker 7: you have periods where you're immunosuppressed and you can't be
- 28:35Speaker 7: around large crowds. You can be out on the golf course.
- 28:38Speaker 7: It's just you and maybe your dad or your mom,
- 28:40Speaker 7: or a buddy with you, or even you by yourself.
- 28:43Speaker 7: When you're going through cancer treatments, you also have periods
- 28:47Speaker 7: of time where you are very anemic, and you also
- 28:50Speaker 7: have very low platelets, which puts you at a big
- 28:53Speaker 7: risk for excessive bleeding. So you can't play any type
- 28:56Speaker 7: of contact sport. You couldn't play basketball or football or hockey,
- 29:00Speaker 7: could play golf. So that the golf piece is because
- 29:04Speaker 7: number one, it was important to Mattics, but number two,
- 29:07Speaker 7: it can be a wonderful way for these kids to
- 29:10Speaker 7: still get out and be active and have you know,
- 29:14Speaker 7: when they're feeling like it, just you know, good physical activity,
- 29:18Speaker 7: be out in the sun, get vitamin D, whatever it
- 29:21Speaker 7: is that you know being outside does for you. Because
- 29:24Speaker 7: I think all things being equal, anyone is going to
- 29:28Speaker 7: have a better outcome if they stay active.
- 29:31Speaker 3: I would agree with that one hundred percent, and so
- 29:33Speaker 3: and so does science that they one hundred percent agree
- 29:35Speaker 3: with that. Have you talked have you been in contact with,
- 29:38Speaker 3: maybe across the country, with other parents that have gone
- 29:42Speaker 3: through several things like you have it? Do you continue
- 29:44Speaker 3: to offer support for them? Talk about that.
- 29:48Speaker 7: I follow stories of other families who are going through treatments.
- 29:54Speaker 7: I have been in contact with some of them. It
- 29:59Speaker 7: can and be a very isolating feeling. There are times
- 30:02Speaker 7: when you want to talk to other people in the
- 30:05Speaker 7: same boat that you're in, But then there are times
- 30:08Speaker 7: when you just want to pretend like that is it's
- 30:11Speaker 7: not your reality. So I think it just varies. I
- 30:16Speaker 7: am trying very hard, Davey and I both are trying
- 30:20Speaker 7: very hard to be honest in my grief. I suppose
- 30:25Speaker 7: it's how I would say it. So I've made posts
- 30:29Speaker 7: on Facebook since Mattis has passed away just about the
- 30:33Speaker 7: reality of losing a child and grief and what happens
- 30:37Speaker 7: to you and your family dynamic when you have a
- 30:41Speaker 7: tragedy like that. So, yes, I do stay in touch
- 30:46Speaker 7: with people, but I've also realized that I could lose
- 30:50Speaker 7: my child in the exact same way that somebody else did,
- 30:54Speaker 7: and it's still what's going to work for me. What's
- 30:57Speaker 7: going to get me from minute to minute is not
- 30:59Speaker 7: the same as what's going to get them. You could
- 31:02Speaker 7: lose a child suddenly, and as shocking as that would be,
- 31:07Speaker 7: the end result is still the same. They're gone, and
- 31:10Speaker 7: you know what you need to do to move forward,
- 31:13Speaker 7: to put one foot in front of the other. There's
- 31:15Speaker 7: just there's no uniformity to it.
- 31:18Speaker 3: Before we let you go, what do you want the
- 31:22Speaker 3: listeners and the world to know about your son?
- 31:27Speaker 7: I want them to know what a faithful, steadfast boy
- 31:32Speaker 7: he was. He found out very quickly in his treatment
- 31:37Speaker 7: process that this was probably not going to work for him,
- 31:41Speaker 7: and he said as much to me. One day. He
- 31:43Speaker 7: said to me. We were driving to Cincinnati, and he said,
- 31:46Speaker 7: if I don't make it out of this, I hope
- 31:48Speaker 7: somebody can learn something from me, and then that's what
- 31:54Speaker 7: we'll do, buddy. You know, then that's what we'll do.
- 31:57Speaker 7: You know. He was fifteen, sixteen years old when this
- 32:00Speaker 7: was happening. There was no circling around it, talking around it.
- 32:04Speaker 7: You had to have these very blunt conversations, and he
- 32:06Speaker 7: just he wanted somebody to learn. So he was faithful.
- 32:11Speaker 7: He had no fear about where he was going. He
- 32:19Speaker 7: just wanted to make sure that somehow, someway we do
- 32:23Speaker 7: something so that at some point this doesn't happen to
- 32:28Speaker 7: a sixteen year old.
- 32:30Speaker 3: As we close, tell us about the foundation. How can
- 32:32Speaker 3: people learn more about it? You are on social media
- 32:35Speaker 3: website what do you got?
- 32:38Speaker 14: Well, you can go to Maddoxpotter dot org. That's the
- 32:41Speaker 14: landing page for the foundation. Also we have like Instagram
- 32:46Speaker 14: pages and Facebook pages with the Maddox Potter Foundation. We're
- 32:50Speaker 14: really excited about it. We have the kickoff coming up
- 32:55Speaker 14: next Thursday, and then the golf tournament, which be on Friday,
- 33:01Speaker 14: be an annual thing, and we're really looking forward.
- 33:03Speaker 3: Where's a golf tournament.
- 33:05Speaker 14: It's going to be at his home course at Barry Hills, Okay, okay.
- 33:08Speaker 2: And it's.
- 33:11Speaker 14: Unfortunately and fortunately at the same time, it's sold out
- 33:14Speaker 14: very quick. So going forward, still like to keep it
- 33:18Speaker 14: at Berry Hills, but maybe have to do it in
- 33:20Speaker 14: like two or three separate flights, just depending upon the
- 33:23Speaker 14: demand for it.
- 33:24Speaker 3: So okay, well, guys, it's an inspirational story, and like
- 33:29Speaker 3: I said, I was familiar with it through the media accounts,
- 33:32Speaker 3: but I never met the one of you until till today.
- 33:34Speaker 3: I appreciate you taking time to be here with us,
- 33:37Speaker 3: but also appreciate you telling your story and telling the
- 33:40Speaker 3: world what a great young man Miightix was. Appreciate you
- 33:43Speaker 3: being here. Thanks a lot.
- 33:44Speaker 7: Yeah, we appreciate you.

- 36:22Speaker 3: on TV.
- 36:24Speaker 4: Well you know what they say, the camera at sim
- 36:26Speaker 4: pounds and boy did it ever had a lot of
- 36:28Speaker 4: pounds to me.
- 36:28Speaker 3: So well, whatever you do. With congratulations, let's talk about
- 36:33Speaker 3: the weather because we got some it's springtime in Appalachia,
- 36:36Speaker 3: which means sometimes we have these severe storms and looks
- 36:40Speaker 3: like today is going to be one of those days.
- 36:42Speaker 4: It really is, and you know, we we've got a
- 36:44Speaker 4: lot of parameters that set us up perfectly for a
- 36:47Speaker 4: classic afternoon severe storm of me. You know, a lot
- 36:51Speaker 4: of what we've had in recent memory has been in
- 36:54Speaker 4: the late night, in overnight hours. Things that needs early
- 36:57Speaker 4: morning hours, you know, something that is exult lost to
- 37:00Speaker 4: many people because you just can't see the storm coming.
- 37:03Speaker 4: But we have afternute thunderstorms in between five and about
- 37:06Speaker 4: eight o'clock is the time that we've got to keep
- 37:08Speaker 4: our eyes really pinned to the sky and at least
- 37:12Speaker 4: listening to the radio station. When you hear those eas
- 37:15Speaker 4: tones that go out over five eighty, you know, when
- 37:18Speaker 4: you're looksten, it'll be one hundred, you know, kws.
- 37:22Speaker 5: Anything of that nature.
- 37:23Speaker 4: You've got to pay attention to what we're talking about.
- 37:25Speaker 4: We are going to have thunderstorms are capable producing damaging
- 37:29Speaker 4: wing gus today along with large hail. This isn't just
- 37:32Speaker 4: hal but we have the potentially have large hail today.
- 37:36Speaker 4: So that's stuff that will do damage to vehicles, roof
- 37:39Speaker 4: damage things of that nature. And also listen, we had
- 37:41Speaker 4: storms up in Nicholas County the other day. There's a
- 37:43Speaker 4: guy who got caught out in the hail. He had
- 37:46Speaker 4: his back was all bruised from the large hail stems
- 37:49Speaker 4: that happen there. So what we're telling you is pay attention.
- 37:53Speaker 4: The times to be really a word is going to
- 37:57Speaker 4: be between five and eight o'clock dece evening while we
- 38:00Speaker 4: do the damage you wing gus and a large hell.
- 38:02Speaker 4: Possible tornadoes are possible this afternoon as well. Storm for
- 38:05Speaker 4: dicksonsidered Omen Oklahoma says that we have between a five
- 38:08Speaker 4: and nine percent chance of any storm producing a tornado today.
- 38:12Speaker 4: So our forecast models are very high on the tornado
- 38:17Speaker 4: chance today, the rotating storms, and they're also very high
- 38:20Speaker 4: on the hail threat for today, so just be aware
- 38:23Speaker 4: of it. It's all going to come in from the
- 38:25Speaker 4: west and northwest and then work its way off to
- 38:28Speaker 4: the east southeast, and then after that we will be
- 38:32Speaker 4: able to relax and then enjoy a much cooler day tomorrow,
- 38:36Speaker 4: and just looking ahead, Friday will pop back up to
- 38:39Speaker 4: eighty Some storms will be strong possible on Saturday and
- 38:43Speaker 4: Easter Sunday of sprinkle chants with temperatures in a load
- 38:45Speaker 4: to mid seventy.
- 38:47Speaker 3: And again you said the timetable, this is probably during
- 38:50Speaker 3: the five o'clock hour, and people might be kind of
- 38:52Speaker 3: fooled if they're out at about maybe they're taking lunch
- 38:54Speaker 3: outside today it's absolutely beautiful. It's going to beautiful here
- 38:58Speaker 3: in the Canal Valley leading up to those.
- 39:00Speaker 4: Right, Yeah, it's going to be wonderful. I mean, listen,
- 39:03Speaker 4: in temperatures today are going to be in the midnight
- 39:04Speaker 4: for seventies. But you know the wind's going to be
- 39:07Speaker 4: out there about ten to twenty out of the southwest today.
- 39:10Speaker 4: But you know those winds this aftery, in this evening,
- 39:12Speaker 4: I mean, we're definitely gonna get some damaging wing gust.
- 39:14Speaker 4: But yeah, five to eight o'clock is going to be
- 39:17Speaker 4: the time of grand concern. And then tomorrow, just make
- 39:21Speaker 4: note that we will have a northwest wind about fifteen
- 39:24Speaker 4: to thirty miles per hour and with it only the
- 39:26Speaker 4: upper fifties, it's going to be few and pretty gosh
- 39:29Speaker 4: darn cool for a Tuesday.
- 39:30Speaker 3: Be weather alert. Hey, Brian, I appreciate you being here,
- 39:33Speaker 3: my friend. Thanks a lot, and I know you guys
- 39:34Speaker 3: aren't going to get a whole lot of sleep you
- 39:36Speaker 3: and Spencer and Chris, so keep it eye for you.
- 39:39Speaker 3: We'll be watching and listening. Thanks a lot, man, sounds good,
- 39:42Speaker 3: We did it. Brian Hughes from Tracker thirteen. I just
- 39:45Speaker 3: know you got some severe weather and this is not
- 39:48Speaker 3: something to play with this afternoon. At a timetable starting
- 39:50Speaker 3: at about five o'clock this afternoon, so you may encounter
- 39:54Speaker 3: on your drive home, but it looks like that five
- 39:56Speaker 3: to eight window, it's going to be pretty pretty intense
- 39:59Speaker 3: here in the canal, ally with possibility of tornadoes and
- 40:04Speaker 3: large hail damaging wins. If you got an event playing
- 40:08Speaker 3: the sevening in a high school baseball game, little league soccer, whatever,
- 40:10Speaker 3: chances are it's going to be canceled because it ain't
- 40:13Speaker 3: looking good. But it's that small window between about five
- 40:17Speaker 3: and eight. Then after eight it's going to start to
- 40:19Speaker 3: calm down a little bit, so just be aware of that.
- 40:23Speaker 3: Order adults to protect themselves agains severe respiratory disease, talk

- 46:07Speaker 3: Remember a couple of years ago when the voters rejected
- 46:09Speaker 3: a proposed amendment that would give the state the ultimate
- 46:12Speaker 3: say so over state Board of education policies. Yeah, that one. Well,
- 46:16Speaker 3: the legislature said, not so fast, and we know better
- 46:20Speaker 3: than you, so they approved a bill on Friday. Anyway,
- 46:24Speaker 3: several Republicans spoke out against it as well they should
- 46:27Speaker 3: in my humble opinion, as the voters have stated they
- 46:30Speaker 3: didn't want the legislature to have this kind of control
- 46:33Speaker 3: out of Charleston. The amendment and its exact language would
- 46:36Speaker 3: have given the legislature of the authority to review and
- 46:39Speaker 3: to approve state Board of Education rules and policy. That
- 46:41Speaker 3: was defeated by the voters fifty eight to forty two percent.
- 46:45Speaker 3: Fifty of the state's fifty five counties voted against it
- 46:49Speaker 3: in twenty twenty two. As was pointed out by a
- 46:52Speaker 3: few legislators, including Republicans, I'm just not a huge fan
- 46:57Speaker 3: of that, to be honest with you. But eight Alan

- 47:09Speaker 3: with us you my friend also not a huge fan,
- 47:12Speaker 3: not a huge fan at all. And can we expect
- 47:15Speaker 3: a commentary on I'm working on one right now and
- 47:18Speaker 3: one of the angles that I explore, it'll probably be
- 47:20Speaker 3: out this evening.
- 47:22Speaker 8: But you know, Dave, the power of a constitution originates
- 47:27Speaker 8: from the people. It's the whole idea of a republic.
- 47:30Speaker 8: The concept refers to popular sovereignty. And when we ignore
- 47:37Speaker 8: the will of the people, and they have spoken on
- 47:40Speaker 8: this issue, what happens to the idea of the consent
- 47:45Speaker 8: of the governed? And people are saying, oh, here he
- 47:48Speaker 8: goes again, Here he goes again. Here's the problem. This
- 47:52Speaker 8: may be a little thing to some people, but little
- 47:55Speaker 8: things cracks in the dam, have a way of becoming
- 47:58Speaker 8: big things. And the first time you ignore the concept
- 48:02Speaker 8: of popular sovereignty and you do something today, it's saying
- 48:06Speaker 8: that all of the policies of the State Board of
- 48:08Speaker 8: Education have to go before the legislature, but what's next.
- 48:12Speaker 8: It's easier to do it the next time and the
- 48:14Speaker 8: next time after that. That's what really rubs me here
- 48:18Speaker 8: is the fact that we've totally disregarded the fundamentals of
- 48:23Speaker 8: the state constitution, and for that matter, are our United
- 48:27Speaker 8: States Constitution.

- 48:39Speaker 3: my question about all this, and the listeners have heard
- 48:41Speaker 3: me say this, DJ is anomber Republican party, the one
- 48:44Speaker 3: that was supposed to want to give more power back
- 48:47Speaker 3: to local entities. I mean, that's how we liked small government.
- 48:51Speaker 3: But I'm not a member of the party. That's not
- 48:53Speaker 3: what I'm seeing. I'm seen that it seems like many
- 48:56Speaker 3: and not all, because as I said, there were several
- 48:58Speaker 3: Republicans that spoke out against this on this and other things.
- 49:03Speaker 3: It seems to me like they want to bring the
- 49:06Speaker 3: power to Charleston. And that's that's so anti Republican.
- 49:12Speaker 8: In my opinion, the best voice I have heard on
- 49:15Speaker 8: this on either side of the capitol is Senator Amy Grady.
- 49:18Speaker 8: She stood up and warned about this, voted against this,
- 49:21Speaker 8: and said, look, if we feel that the voters were confused,
- 49:25Speaker 8: and we can get into that argument, I don't think
- 49:27Speaker 8: they were. If we feel there's some other issue at play,
- 49:30Speaker 8: then we should put this back on the ballot, a
- 49:32Speaker 8: single amendment, and we should ensure that voters are educated.
- 49:36Speaker 8: We should have to go out and get the populace
- 49:38Speaker 8: to understand our issue here and have them vote in
- 49:40Speaker 8: the affirmative outstanding idea. Why it didn't happen, I don't know,
- 49:45Speaker 8: but that would have been the way to handle this. I,
- 49:48Speaker 8: like a lot of people, was watching the closing moments
- 49:50Speaker 8: of a legislature and I am not by any stretch
- 49:54Speaker 8: of the imagination of parliamentarian, but I saw stuff Saturday
- 49:57Speaker 8: night that that made that made my head span.
- 50:00Speaker 2: Man.
- 50:01Speaker 8: Yeah, so we'll get into that with Joey Garcia. He's
- 50:04Speaker 8: going to be on at ten oh six. I want
- 50:07Speaker 8: to pine on it at this point, other than to say, yeah,
- 50:10Speaker 8: there were some balls that got dropped.
- 50:12Speaker 3: I had no idea where you were going with that,
- 50:14Speaker 3: just just so you know you said that.
- 50:16Speaker 8: So I think there's definitely some questions that need answering,
- 50:21Speaker 8: and look, maybe there are good answers to those questions.
- 50:25Speaker 3: I'm going to have Senator tar on the midday show
- 50:27Speaker 3: today too, so maybe we can leave you with this.
- 50:30Speaker 8: If rules are to have purpose and to have value,
- 50:33Speaker 8: they can't be like ice cream easily melted.
- 50:37Speaker 3: Texas Dave, I think the legislature should be able to
- 50:39Speaker 3: review decisions made by the state Board of Education simply
- 50:42Speaker 3: because legislators are elected members of the state Board of Education.
- 50:46Speaker 3: Are not your thoughts on that. I mean, my biggest
- 50:50Speaker 3: issue with this, TJ not interrupt, which I just did.
- 50:53Speaker 3: My biggest issue with this is that the voters said
- 50:56Speaker 3: they didn't want exactly. That's my biggest issue with this.
- 50:58Speaker 3: You can get into a fundamental argument over it, but
- 51:00Speaker 3: I think bottom line, in twenty twenty two, the voter
- 51:03Speaker 3: said that they did not want this, yes, and that
- 51:05Speaker 3: Trump's the policy question here. It can become about policy
- 51:08Speaker 3: and then again back to what Grady wanted to do.
