- Podcast episode 34: Hey HDX, creator of Reboot Play One and host at the Checkpoint. And today's question is Am I still growing or have I just become very good at what I already know? Am I still growing? Or have I just become very good at what I already know? Wow, this is an easy one for me. I'm I'm still growing. I am always growing. I don't think I will that's a bit weird. I just think that what I know is never all there is to know about what it is that I know that makes sense. I'm constantly growing. I I I recently just recorded a really, really long video just ranting on about my past two and three weeks. And I mentioned a concept called called yin yang. All life is yin yang. I I basically live by that motto. And and what that allows me to do is it allows me to look at any decision that I have, any thought process, any opinion, and look at it from from both sides. So whenever I think that I've got something licked. Or whenever I think that I think I might know everything about that topic, I would flip it around and go, well, what about this? Or what about that? And then I realize I don't know anything about it at all. And that's pretty much how I've been approaching life for the past five, six, seven years, maybe. Is that whatever I think is the right answer, the right course. like the right path almost always seems to not be the right one at some point. So I always think I'm still growing. In fact, that's probably one of the things that I actually enjoy about life is learning, is growing, is is getting proved wrong, is getting proved right. And that's not been an easy thing for me, and I think for most people as well. I know especially for me, thinking that I'm always right was It's a it's a bit of a curse. You know, working in IT for so long, have especially running your own business, you you get used to people just accepting what you say as gospel. Buy this computer, this is how you need to set up your office, buy this router, do this, you know, this is the company that you should go to for internet, all of this sort of stuff. Like you you basically have cart blanche to dish out any information that you want and more often than not people will just accept that. And that kind of spills over into life. At least it has for me. And I'm not like this anymore. Maybe I am. I don't know. No. I I I I'm I'm I'm more aware now of of certain certain responses that I have to certain questions. So I'm not saying that I'm not like this anymore, but I'm saying that if you know, if it came time for a person to question my recommendations or opinions or anything along those lines, like I'll I'll I'll take an extra couple of seconds to think about it. So I've I've I've learnt to not be so reactive on those sorts of things and that's part of growth. You know, it's like people are entitled to their opinions, even if they're wrong. and especially if they're right. And I have recently, like I said, like recently not as in weeks, but you know, the past number of years, I've looked at myself in terms of how I show up for other people. how I how I give them advice, how I help them and you know and how I talk as well. And I've made a lot of changes. I've been a lot more mm conscious of how I talk of me just trying to be a bit more it's the word I'm looking for. Friendly isn't the word, but accommodating, you know, of other people's opinions. rather than, you know, just hammering home what I think is right and like whether or not it's right or wrong. You know, I I IT again is a is a special special industry because even though There are You know, I've I I don't think I've ever said this before, but generally IT what I love about the IT industry is it's very black and white. What I mean by that is IT is problem and a solution. That that's kind of it. My computer doesn't work. Okay, do this. This is running slow, fix that. You know, th there's usually a there's usually a solution for any one particular problem. It's pretty pretty easy to figure it out, especially when you see the same problems all the time. and and things become efficient. Now it's when the solutions become varied and all of this sort of stuff that for me as a person that's been doing this for as long as I have on my own where my solutions to certain problems I think that, hey, this is how you fix things. And somebody else says, No, you don't have to do that. You can do this other thing as well. And we're kind of like yelling at each other, going, no, do it this way, no, do it this way. But at the end, both work and both are right. so I've I've been a lot more listening. Like I said, accommodating is probably a better word. accommodating of other people's opinions. And in in that way, I I I've grown quite a lot. And it's not just within IT, it's it's with life, it's with finances, it's with friends, it's with relationships, it's with so many other things where instead of me just saying, Hey, this is my answer to this, and you're all wrong, it's this is what I'd like to contribute and I'd love to also hear what you guys think as well. And you know, I I I still might stick to my guns with my answers, but A lot of times I'll listen to some other opinions and I'll learn a bit more about it. I might change my stance on things. I might, you know, think about my own answers in a different way because someone else has presented a different argument. And, you know, more often than not, I change. So I'm I'm I'm definitely still growing and I plan on growing till pretty much the day I die. You know, I I don't think I'll ever have Everything's sorted. I I think when I start to become, you know, very good at something, it it means that I've probably not cast my net wide enough. You know, when things become this is how you do it, and this is, you know, without any reason, like this is how you do it. If you don't ask why, then you you're you're not a aware of, you know. Just how efficient you can do something like the right way. It can be a a more creative way. You know, just being told to do something in a way and just repeating it over and over again until you're very good at it. I think it's kind of boring, you know. I've always been a person to To that's what I'm looking for without making myself sound lazy. You know what? I think everybody does this. Maybe, not everyone. I know I do this. If I'm given a task and I'm I've shown how to do it, I've been shown how to do it, then it doesn't take long for me to try and look at it and go, surely there's an easier way to do this. I know other people like that. I think my sisters like that. I know some of my friends are like that. And and for me, that's part of of growing, constant growth. Yet I do know some other people that will be given a task, a job, or whatever it is, or anything, and they say, Okay, here is your thing to do. This is how you do it. And they just do it. They do it day in, day out, and that's it. And they're quite content with that. And I'm not saying they're wrong, but that's just them and more power to them. And They might become part of this, you know, second part of this question where they're just very good at it, at whatever whatever it is that they already know. Fortunately or unfortunately, depending on what you look at it, for me, I'm the former. I'm the, you know, I'm the still growing. Now, that growing part might not even be a positive at all. It it's just me being curious. You know, is there another way to do this? Is there a way to make this more fun? Is there is there a way that I can get somebody else to do it in a different way? You know, the it it's you know, I I think now that I think about it, it's probably more of a curiosity thing than anything else. because if I'm given a task to do something and find it boring and I try and make it more fun, I still might get the task done, but it might not be as efficient. Who knows? but that's just kind of how I work. So to answer the question In its entirety, am I still growing or have I just become very good at what I already know? I'm still growing. I am absolutely growing and I will continue to grow in literally every aspect of my life, whether it be health, wealth and fitness, whether it be, you know, happiness, you know, whether it be purpose. and a good way to look at that is are all of those examples there. You know, happiness is doing something that you enjoy. And you receive pleasure from it. I guess is is a weird way to describe it. But at some point, constantly doing that thing might not give you the same amount of happiness anymore. So you kind of have to grow and you know, either find a different way to do something or find a new hobby. I don't know what it is. But I I think for for the most part, people will have both traits. You know, they'll just become very good at something. You know, these are the people that might get the first job out of high school and stick all the way through to 60. Who knows? in the same position, maybe. or they're still growing. You know, people that stick at a job for 12 months and they bounce to another job and work twelve months there. I I don't know. But for me, I'm still growing. So that's it for this question. if you think this could help somebody, share it. If you like it. click the like button. I'm still trying to work out what to say at the end of these videos. I suck. see I'm still growing. So I'm not very good at this. if you would like to know more, leave a comment. Cool. I think that's it for me. Dex Reboot Play One and the checkpoint. I will see you on the next video. Bye.
