- 2:15Speaker 4: Rob are you there? Let's go to Rob Reel. Good morning, sir,
- 2:19Speaker 4: Good morning, And where is Rob Reel? Where in the
- 2:22Speaker 4: world is Rob Real? Today?
- 2:24Speaker 8: So I'm not walking through Weston so much as I'm
- 2:28Speaker 8: walking around Weston this morning. I started just at the
- 2:33Speaker 8: west end of Weston, but thanks to Google Maps and
- 2:37Speaker 8: the Patagorean theorem, I'm kind of cutting the corner going
- 2:40Speaker 8: through tiny kinch Low later today on my way to
- 2:44Speaker 8: the edge of Clarksburg for day seven of October with
- 2:48Speaker 8: panhandle cleaning and restoration.
- 2:50Speaker 4: Now again, if you're just joining us to you think,
- 2:52Speaker 4: what what is this whole thing about. We've been checking
- 2:54Speaker 4: in with Rob now for a week. Rob kind of
- 2:56Speaker 4: made a little bit of a promise of the listeners
- 2:58Speaker 4: that if we raise a certain amount of mone for
- 3:00Speaker 4: WVU Children's that Rob would walk the check from Charleston
- 3:04Speaker 4: to Morgantown. And he left last week and he's having
- 3:07Speaker 4: to walk the back roads because the interstate probably not
- 3:11Speaker 4: probably not recommended. I've got i got a whole host
- 3:15Speaker 4: of folks in the studio with me this morning. Rob,
- 3:17Speaker 4: I've got a million nicely from West Virginia. Watch Chris Lawrence,
- 3:20Speaker 4: Matt Murphy getting ready to talk some high school football. Milia.
- 3:23Speaker 4: Do you have any questions for Rob here?
- 3:25Speaker 6: I just want to know what he's eating, Like, is
- 3:26Speaker 6: he's stopping at local food spots?
- 3:30Speaker 4: What is it like?
- 3:30Speaker 9: What's the food journey like?
- 3:33Speaker 8: I'm doing my best to stay local, and actually, fortunately
- 3:37Speaker 8: as rural as some of this is, local is really
- 3:40Speaker 8: the only option, let alone the best option. In some
- 3:43Speaker 8: of these places you're not running into uh not running
- 3:45Speaker 8: into a lot of chains in places like Pickle Street.
- 3:49Speaker 4: But the.
- 3:52Speaker 8: One of my favorite things about this so far as
- 3:53Speaker 8: I've been I've been finding like local ice cream joints.
- 3:56Speaker 8: I got a blueberry milkshake at the Coke and Float
- 3:58Speaker 8: on the West End of and yesterday I've kind of
- 4:02Speaker 8: got my heart set on the Polling's dairy king later today,
- 4:06Speaker 8: so a ridiculous amount of dairy So I will be
- 4:10Speaker 8: the guy who gains weight walking one hundred and seventy
- 4:12Speaker 8: two miles.
- 4:14Speaker 4: Rob.
- 4:15Speaker 3: This is Chris. I admire what you're doing, but I
- 4:18Speaker 3: just got a check. I would hate for this thing
- 4:21Speaker 3: to come to an end and you walk into WU
- 4:24Speaker 3: Children's Hospital and go, oh man, I forgot the check.
- 4:28Speaker 4: Isn't that exactly what I told you last week?
- 4:31Speaker 2: Rob?
- 4:31Speaker 4: And that exactly what I said to you.
- 4:34Speaker 8: It is exactly what you said.
- 4:36Speaker 4: Yes, you do have the check, right, Oh man? That
- 4:41Speaker 4: is gonna start all over.
- 4:42Speaker 3: Again if you're gonna have to walk back down here
- 4:44Speaker 3: and get it, because nobody's gonna drive.
- 4:46Speaker 4: It to you.
- 4:46Speaker 8: So so for those of you playing our home game,
- 4:50Speaker 8: Dave actually pinch hit for me yesterday at an event
- 4:53Speaker 8: at the Putnam Career and Technical Center and took truck
- 4:56Speaker 8: Norris with him, so as long as he didn't move it,
- 5:01Speaker 8: it should still be in the back of the cab. Right.
- 5:05Speaker 4: Well, I mean I did stop on the way home
- 5:08Speaker 4: for a six pack and somebody, so that's a cool check.
- 5:11Speaker 4: I said, you buy me the six pack of beer
- 5:12Speaker 4: and and I'll give you the check.
- 5:14Speaker 8: So so there isn't a place to endorse it.
- 5:18Speaker 4: So all you got out of it was it was
- 5:19Speaker 4: some old Milwaukee Sorry buddy, sorry buddy.
- 5:21Speaker 8: Hey Rob, And by the way, you get the good stuff.
- 5:24Speaker 4: I do want to Well, I'm in Radio. I do
- 5:26Speaker 4: want to mention though, please follow along on the Facebook
- 5:29Speaker 4: page of ninety six one Superstar Country kW guess because
- 5:32Speaker 4: Rob has been posting some beautiful pictures and they say,
- 5:35Speaker 4: the experts tell us, Rob, this is the weekend or
- 5:37Speaker 4: the next couple of days is the peak time to
- 5:39Speaker 4: see the colors in West Virginia. Brother, you're seeing them?
- 5:42Speaker 8: Oh man, The experts are right on the money. Mountain
- 5:45Speaker 8: Mama has been showing off, and I have to give
- 5:48Speaker 8: the hat tip to her because even with you know,
- 5:50Speaker 8: cooler and only like sixty eight yesterday, it's still been
- 5:54Speaker 8: fantastic weather for late October, and it looks as though
- 5:58Speaker 8: she's going to be good to me all the way
- 5:59Speaker 8: through Thursday. When I do finally get to WVU Medicine children.
- 6:03Speaker 3: And Rob, you are you are a marine discharged from
- 6:07Speaker 3: the United States. There's no such thing as an ex marine.
- 6:10Speaker 3: I know that, but we are retired.
- 6:12Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 6:13Speaker 3: Does this remind you of your of your days back
- 6:16Speaker 3: in the day of just humping it from here to there?
- 6:20Speaker 8: I countless twenty mile marches with sixty pound field pack.
- 6:24Speaker 8: So this is nothing for you, Well, it was nothing
- 6:28Speaker 8: for me when I was twenty. I will be fifty
- 6:31Speaker 8: one one week from today, and father time is undefeated.
- 6:36Speaker 4: I'll just say that exactly, exactly. Lots of toil in all,
- 6:40Speaker 4: my friend, lots of ivy profen be safe, and we
- 6:42Speaker 4: discovered last week this is TMI for the radio. Welcome
- 6:45Speaker 4: a board, Amelia. But last week his biggest problem was chafing.
- 6:49Speaker 4: It was chafing. So the next gold bond gold, That's
- 6:52Speaker 4: what I told Next year brought to you by Panhandle
- 6:54Speaker 4: Cleaning and Restoration and gold bond, Yes, gold bond Medicaid power,
- 6:58Speaker 4: as Paul Harvey used to say.
- 7:00Speaker 8: Yeah, it's it's been Harry Chasin and the Cats and
- 7:03Speaker 8: the Cradle.
- 7:03Speaker 7: Yeah, meeting.
- 7:05Speaker 4: All right. On that note, we're gonna let you go. Rob,
- 7:07Speaker 4: be safe out there, gets you a little rest this weekend.
- 7:09Speaker 4: He takes the weekend off, but he's not you know,
- 7:11Speaker 4: I mean, he's still he needs it. He needs it
- 7:13Speaker 4: and he's gonna arrive Halloween at WVU Children's Hospital with
- 7:17Speaker 4: that check for up. It's a one hundred and seventy
- 7:19Speaker 4: thousand dollars. So Rob, great job, man, be safe. We'll
- 7:22Speaker 4: talk again on Monday, Buddy, Thanks a lot.
- 7:24Speaker 8: Good Lord Willing and the Crik don't rise. Thank you.
- 7:26Speaker 4: All right, let's talk to Chris Lawrence High School football,
- 7:29Speaker 4: because you got a good one tonight with a Hurricane
- 7:32Speaker 4: at Riverside, sir.
- 7:33Speaker 3: Indeed, this is one where Riverside has just had hard
- 7:36Speaker 3: luck all season long. They come into this game one
- 7:39Speaker 3: and six and some key injuries to Riverside to just
- 7:43Speaker 3: add to their troubles. But this is still a proud
- 7:45Speaker 3: bunch in eastern Kanawa County and they would love nothing
- 7:48Speaker 3: better than to pull the upset tonight and spoil this one.
- 7:51Speaker 3: Hurricane has been in the situation before where you're facing
- 7:54Speaker 3: a team that doesn't have the greatest record. You cannot
- 7:56Speaker 3: allow yourself to look at that and have a letdown.
- 7:59Speaker 3: And I talked to May last night and he said,
- 8:02Speaker 3: you know, we focus on ourselves, not necessarily the opponent,
- 8:05Speaker 3: and if you do that, you can really take care
- 8:07Speaker 3: of business. And that's what they'll be doing tonight, is
- 8:10Speaker 3: to just try and get better with every rep. And
- 8:14Speaker 3: that's uh, you know. And the other thing that Hurricane
- 8:16Speaker 3: has to guard against is overlooking this game tonight because
- 8:19Speaker 3: they've got George Washington and Martinsburg to close out the
- 8:21Speaker 3: regular season and can't be peeking ahead on that schedule.
- 8:25Speaker 3: You got to get you got to keep keep your
- 8:26Speaker 3: eye on the prize tonight down at Quincy. So we'll
- 8:29Speaker 3: be on the air at seven o'clock Air and Parking
- 8:31Speaker 3: and Parker and I will be there and have the
- 8:33Speaker 3: game for you on WCHS Radio and on westernd and
- 8:35Speaker 3: outdoors tomorrow. Oh my goodness, you asked me too quickly.
- 8:38Speaker 3: I've got another really big deer story, this one from
- 8:43Speaker 3: Kanawa County. It's the it's antlerless Hunting weekend, and I
- 8:47Speaker 3: got a couple of stories regarding that. One is, uh,
- 8:52Speaker 3: this organization called Warriors in the Field always has an
- 8:56Speaker 3: event around the antlerless Steer hitting Days where they take
- 8:59Speaker 3: veterans hunting, so we'll be we'll check in with them.
- 9:02Speaker 3: And also the Governor's One Shot Hunt is this weekend,
- 9:07Speaker 3: which is one of the major fundraisers for the Hunter's
- 9:10Speaker 3: Helping the Hungry program. We'll talk to Glenn Adrian who
- 9:13Speaker 3: is the chairman of that, and we'll get a perspective
- 9:17Speaker 3: on the Governor's One Shot Hunt that'll be taking place
- 9:21Speaker 3: this weekend as well, plus some other stuff.
- 9:23Speaker 4: So you need to check it out tomorrow, all right,
- 9:24Speaker 4: Chris appreciate it man, all right, dude, thanks to Chris
- 9:27Speaker 4: Lawrence again. He and Aaron will have coverage tonight of
- 9:30Speaker 4: the Hurricane at Riverside game that's on five ADWCCHS on
- 9:34Speaker 4: ninety six one KWS, though Tom Bragg and Matt Murphy
- 9:38Speaker 4: will have the call as Hoover entertains Elkins. As I said,
- 9:41Speaker 4: Tom a little tied up this morning, but we do
- 9:43Speaker 4: have Matt Murphy in the producer studio now putting on
- 9:45Speaker 4: his sports hat. So Matt, are you pretty excited about
- 9:50Speaker 4: this game tonight? Buddy? Yeah, this is gonna be a
- 9:51Speaker 4: good one.
- 9:52Speaker 10: Five and three Elkins Tigers are coming into town. Oddly enough,
- 9:56Speaker 10: even though we've still got three weeks left on the season,
- 9:59Speaker 10: tonight is seeing in Elkins. The last two games of
- 10:02Speaker 10: the season for the Huskies are going to be on
- 10:04Speaker 10: the road, so this is the last one at least
- 10:07Speaker 10: until probably the playoffs for the Huskies tonight. But Huskies
- 10:11Speaker 10: are currently seven and oh on the season. They're taking
- 10:14Speaker 10: on the five and three Elkins Tigers. So Huskies have
- 10:18Speaker 10: just been having a really great season. Dane Hatfield SEENI
- 10:21Speaker 10: your quarterback has been setting records left and right, up there,
- 10:24Speaker 10: and I'm sure he is going to pile on some
- 10:27Speaker 10: more yardage onto that tonight as well.
- 10:29Speaker 4: All right, and we'll be listening. Murphy. I do appreciate it, man,
- 10:32Speaker 4: because I know you were kind of a little probably
- 10:34Speaker 4: a little bit tired after doing Trick or Beat last night.
- 10:36Speaker 4: I'm gonna talk about that a little bit later on.
- 10:37Speaker 10: Yeah, that was that was a bit much last night.
- 10:39Speaker 4: Eight million children last night over at Gomark.
- 10:41Speaker 10: Ballpark, nine and a half million, and it's going The
- 10:44Speaker 10: numbers were going up.
- 10:46Speaker 4: It's like Trump rally numbers. They go up every time
- 10:49Speaker 4: he tells the story.
- 10:50Speaker 10: Let me tell you what I feel for Rob Reel
- 10:53Speaker 10: because I walked thirty one thousand steps yesterday and at
- 10:57Speaker 10: the end of the night, all I could think to
- 10:58Speaker 10: myself was, is this is how Rob feels?
- 11:01Speaker 4: Because this is terrible? Yeah, indeed it is. But we
- 11:05Speaker 4: at least you get to sit down and do the
- 11:06Speaker 4: game tonight, I guess right. Absolutely.
- 11:08Speaker 10: Kickoff is at seven o'clock, Tom and I'll take on
- 11:11Speaker 10: the pregame at about six fifty five on ninety six
- 11:14Speaker 10: to one KWS and ninety six to one KWS dot com.
- 11:17Speaker 4: All right, we'll get we'll be listening tonight. I'll give
- 11:20Speaker 4: you an opportunity to get to Hannah Gardner up and
- 11:23Speaker 4: running a Murphy. I appreciated man, Thanks a lot.
- 11:25Speaker 6: Uh.
- 11:25Speaker 4: I'll quickly remind you that we do the show from
- 11:27Speaker 4: the par Mars Store studio. There's not a Parmars store

- 12:14Speaker 6: Yes?
- 12:15Speaker 7: Absolutely.
- 12:15Speaker 4: Let's bring in Hannah Gardner for the Cannell Charleston Humane
- 12:18Speaker 4: Association with this week's Adopt Me Please Pet of the Week. Hannah,
- 12:21Speaker 4: good morning, welcome to the show.
- 12:23Speaker 11: Good morning, how are you.
- 12:24Speaker 4: I'm fine, And I've got a million nicely on here
- 12:27Speaker 4: from West Virginia. Watch. And when I was talking to
- 12:29Speaker 4: her the other day, I said, would you like to
- 12:31Speaker 4: come in a little bit early to talk to me
- 12:33Speaker 4: with Hannah? And she said could I? This is my
- 12:36Speaker 4: dream come true? And I think it's all about the dogs, right,
- 12:40Speaker 4: A million Yes.
- 12:40Speaker 11: Such a cute dog.
- 12:41Speaker 4: Such a cute dog We've got as always Our pets
- 12:45Speaker 4: photo is posted on x on the artist formally known
- 12:48Speaker 4: as Twitter on a Dave A seventy that's the handle,
- 12:50Speaker 4: and also on my radio page, Dave Allen Radio. The
- 12:54Speaker 4: dog's name is Stempy. Hannah tell us about Stimpy?
- 12:58Speaker 11: All right, Well, is a very very very sweet boy.
- 13:02Speaker 11: He's very very friendly. He is kids friendly from what
- 13:06Speaker 11: we know, and of course even if we know that
- 13:10Speaker 11: for sure, we always advise caution, never leave him alone
- 13:13Speaker 11: for the first at least three months, I would say,
- 13:16Speaker 11: just so that way they can get acclimated used to
- 13:18Speaker 11: the way your routines are, your life's about all of that,
- 13:21Speaker 11: and then you never know what makes the dog uncomfortable.
- 13:24Speaker 11: It's kind of like bringing a stranger into your house,
- 13:26Speaker 11: so you never know, so just always be cautious. But
- 13:29Speaker 11: he is three years old. He is neutered already, so
- 13:32Speaker 11: he's ready to go home already. He is available for
- 13:37Speaker 11: fostering if anybody wants to foster him and get him
- 13:40Speaker 11: out of the shelter for a little bit. You could
- 13:42Speaker 11: even foster and if you fall in love with him,
- 13:45Speaker 11: then you can adopt him over the phone, or you
- 13:47Speaker 11: could come up and adopt him, whichever you prefer. But
- 13:49Speaker 11: he is a very very good boy. He is micro
- 13:52Speaker 11: chipped and vaccinated, so he is all up to date
- 13:55Speaker 11: on that. I do believe he has his rabie vaccine
- 13:58Speaker 11: as well. And he is fifty pounds, or at least
- 14:02Speaker 11: he was about a month ago, I think, so he
- 14:06Speaker 11: could be a little bit more than that, but I
- 14:09Speaker 11: would say he could be a little bit more or less,
- 14:11Speaker 11: but I would say he's around the same. How does
- 14:14Speaker 11: he do really really good boy?
- 14:16Speaker 9: How does he do on the leash?
- 14:18Speaker 11: He is a He does really really good on the leash.
- 14:21Speaker 11: He does pool a little bit, but that's usually just
- 14:23Speaker 11: like when he gets distracted or see something else. He's
- 14:27Speaker 11: pretty good on the leash, though he doesn't really pool
- 14:30Speaker 11: too hard. However, I will say he is deaf. That's
- 14:33Speaker 11: a big factor to mention. He cannot hear. I don't
- 14:37Speaker 11: think he can hear at all. I think he's completely deaf.
- 14:39Speaker 11: But he listens very well to like your hand signals.
- 14:44Speaker 11: And I don't know what all he may know, if
- 14:46Speaker 11: he knew anything prior to coming to the shelter or anything,
- 14:50Speaker 11: but he does listen pretty well. Or I guess he
- 14:54Speaker 11: just kind of watches you pretty well and just listens
- 14:56Speaker 11: to like your body movements and stuff like that. He's
- 15:00Speaker 11: a very very good boy. He's a social butterfly. We
- 15:02Speaker 11: do have him in play groups with a bunch of
- 15:04Speaker 11: other dogs, and he is very playful. He is great
- 15:09Speaker 11: and thrives around other energetic dogs. So he would be
- 15:13Speaker 11: a good companion for someone who has another playful, friendly
- 15:17Speaker 11: dog who has the time and patience to work with
- 15:19Speaker 11: a deaf dog to learn the ins and outs of
- 15:22Speaker 11: a deaf dog. And we can always give you resources
- 15:25Speaker 11: and help with any of that as well.
- 15:27Speaker 4: I will remind you this today Vallan Chilling five. Any
- 15:30Speaker 4: Life is brought to you a part by Morgan and Morgan,
- 15:31Speaker 4: America's largest injury law firm. Handah got a text here
- 15:34Speaker 4: waiting on you when you got here this morning as
- 15:36Speaker 4: you normally do, it says, I have wondered about this
- 15:39Speaker 4: for a while. Any idea why you can't scan an
- 15:42Speaker 4: animal for a chip with your phone instead of taking
- 15:45Speaker 4: it to a velt, to a vet or a shelter.
- 15:50Speaker 11: That is interesting. I don't know if it has anything
- 15:52Speaker 11: to do with like certain things inside of these phones
- 15:57Speaker 11: or not. So I don't know if that would like
- 15:58Speaker 11: affect the phone, don't. I have no idea, but I
- 16:02Speaker 11: will say that it would also be I don't really
- 16:07Speaker 11: know if it has anything to do with privacy or not, like,
- 16:09Speaker 11: because typically when you take it to a shelter or
- 16:11Speaker 11: clinic or something like that, the staff members there will
- 16:15Speaker 11: contact the people. But I do think that some places
- 16:19Speaker 11: do tell you, so I'm not one hundred percent sure
- 16:21Speaker 11: on that one, but we could definitely find out. It's
- 16:24Speaker 11: something that would be interesting.
- 16:26Speaker 4: So you had an event last week out of Dutch Miller,
- 16:30Speaker 4: tell me how that win was an adoption of it?
- 16:32Speaker 4: How did that go?
- 16:33Speaker 11: Yes, that went absolutely great. I think we did thirty
- 16:37Speaker 11: five adoptions while we were there.
- 16:39Speaker 4: Good stuff.
- 16:41Speaker 11: Yeah, and then they were very very great up there.
- 16:44Speaker 11: They always help out. It was amazing. We had a
- 16:46Speaker 11: lot of people out there to just see the dog,
- 16:50Speaker 11: then to also just adopt the dog. So definitely worth it.
- 16:53Speaker 11: We're glad we go every year and we're very thankful
- 16:56Speaker 11: for it.
- 16:56Speaker 4: How are we looking on numbers as far as what
- 16:58Speaker 4: you've got in the shelter.
- 17:01Speaker 11: I'm pretty sure we're still either max or over or
- 17:05Speaker 11: at capacity. I know I heard yesterday there was only
- 17:08Speaker 11: like one channel open entirely, so it's probably filled by now.
- 17:14Speaker 11: But we are just doing our best to try to
- 17:17Speaker 11: figure out ways to help get animals out, even if
- 17:20Speaker 11: that means us going to other events that we may
- 17:24Speaker 11: have to like plan schedule to try to help get
- 17:26Speaker 11: them adopted, get them seen, get them out. Fostering adopting, volunteering,
- 17:30Speaker 11: anything like that helps out. We are in need of
- 17:33Speaker 11: any extra help that we can get. I think that
- 17:37Speaker 11: we're still hiring too as well, So if you wanted
- 17:40Speaker 11: to come in and fill out an application, fill out
- 17:42Speaker 11: any volunteer information, adoption information, come on up. We also,
- 17:47Speaker 11: of course love the donations that come in and appreciate
- 17:50Speaker 11: those as well. And we are always in need of
- 17:53Speaker 11: pretty much everything, I will say, especially where we have
- 17:55Speaker 11: a full house right now.
- 17:57Speaker 4: All right, and they're always in need of things like
- 17:59Speaker 4: washcloth and sheets and old rugs and things like that.
- 18:03Speaker 4: You can take any of that stuff.
- 18:04Speaker 11: Hannah, Yes, yes, sheets, blankets, cows, old quotes, comforters, anything
- 18:10Speaker 11: like that we will take. I will say, we have
- 18:13Speaker 11: had like people bring in multiple, multiple, multiple bags of
- 18:16Speaker 11: like pillows and stuff like that. We will take like
- 18:19Speaker 11: one or two maybe like flats, bigger pillows, but we
- 18:22Speaker 11: typically don't use like the throw pillow, little throw pillo
- 18:25Speaker 11: stuff like that, just because they don't really they're too
- 18:29Speaker 11: small for than delay on one and then they two
- 18:31Speaker 11: of them, So we don't please pillows, but blankets, all
- 18:34Speaker 11: that stuff.
- 18:35Speaker 4: We do, all right, Hannah. We will talk to you
- 18:37Speaker 4: again next week, thanks.
- 18:38Speaker 11: A lot, Thank you.
- 18:41Speaker 4: I had a gardener from the Canal Charleston Human Association, Stimpy.
- 18:44Speaker 4: Amelia is the dog this week. Stimpy.
- 18:47Speaker 6: He was so cute and this Halloween costume in the photo.
- 18:49Speaker 4: Yeah, and so if if you want to see that
- 18:51Speaker 4: photo that we're talking about again, you can just go
- 18:54Speaker 4: on over to Dave Allen Radio and Facebook or at
- 18:57Speaker 4: Dave A seventy on Twitter. Stimpy's three years old, around
- 19:00Speaker 4: fifty pounds. He is neutered, he is deaf, so he
- 19:03Speaker 4: needs someone who can be patient with him. And I thought, Amelia,
- 19:06Speaker 4: I thought it was kind of interesting that, you know,
- 19:09Speaker 4: when they got him. You don't know what the dog's
- 19:10Speaker 4: history is. Obviously he can't tell you so, but he
- 19:14Speaker 4: seems to react well to hand signals, so maybe somebody
- 19:18Speaker 4: and I don't know what his backstory was how he
- 19:19Speaker 4: got there, but maybe somebody has worked with him in
- 19:22Speaker 4: the past. And he's still relatively young, so maybe you
- 19:25Speaker 4: could teach him some things.
- 19:26Speaker 6: Yeah. Absolutely, And the fact that he play so well
- 19:28Speaker 6: with children and other dogs, he must just be very malleable.
- 19:31Speaker 4: Yeah, able to go with the fluff. Beautiful, beautiful dog.
- 19:33Speaker 4: Stimpy three years old, around fifty pounds. He is neutered
- 19:35Speaker 4: and deaf, microchipped and vaccinated, very playful, loves other dogs
- 19:40Speaker 4: and kids. Let's try to get stimpy adopted all right?

- 22:32Speaker 4: some stories that you're working on here momentarily. But we've
- 22:35Speaker 4: talked football, We've talked Rob Reels walk a little bit
- 22:38Speaker 4: of everything.
- 22:39Speaker 13: I've loved it.
- 22:39Speaker 6: I mean, I've listened, but it's nice to be here
- 22:41Speaker 6: and see it in person. I've known Chris for a while.
- 22:43Speaker 4: So you think about the new digs here, Huh.
- 22:45Speaker 6: It looks great in here, looks great.
- 22:47Speaker 4: Once we learn how to operate everything, it'll be even better.
- 22:50Speaker 4: And then by that time we'll be ready to move
- 22:52Speaker 4: because if we were just back into the old studio

- 22:55Speaker 4: the renos in a while. I'm gonna have to go
- 22:57Speaker 4: down there and see what it looks like. But we're
- 22:59Speaker 4: having fun with it. I do want to give a
- 23:01Speaker 4: big shout out to everybody who came out last night
- 23:03Speaker 4: for the Selango Law Trick or Beat over at Gomart Ballpark. I,
- 23:07Speaker 4: as Rob mentioned, wasn't there last night. I was in
- 23:09Speaker 4: the beautiful town of Eleanor for the Career Fair at
- 23:13Speaker 4: the Putnam Career Technical Center over on our sister station
- 23:15Speaker 4: k WUS. But I want to talk about trick or Beat.
- 23:18Speaker 4: Everyone here tells me it was great. Something like three
- 23:20Speaker 4: to five thousand. I mean came again somewhere in that neighborhood,
- 23:23Speaker 4: came through the gates last night, County, the kids and
- 23:25Speaker 4: the parents and whatnot. Big shout out to Selango Law
- 23:28Speaker 4: and all the other sponsors who made it happened.
- 23:30Speaker 12: It was.
- 23:31Speaker 4: It was a great event last night. We're still stealing
- 23:33Speaker 4: people's pictures on social media right now. We've got some
- 23:36Speaker 4: posted on I've got some on Dave Island Radio, and
- 23:38Speaker 4: it'll be more to go up throughout the day. But
- 23:40Speaker 4: it was indeed a great event.
- 23:42Speaker 6: It looked so crowded and fun. My kids preschool had
- 23:46Speaker 6: their tri or treat last night, so we couldn't make
- 23:47Speaker 6: it over. There was so sad that the photos I saw, Man,
- 23:49Speaker 6: it was packed, looks like and great weather.
- 23:52Speaker 4: Oh you couldn't beat the weather. Absolutely right about that,
- 23:54Speaker 4: but again thank you to everybody who came out and
- 23:56Speaker 4: made the entire thing possible. The next thing over at
- 23:58Speaker 4: the Gulf at the ballpark, will be watching will be
- 24:02Speaker 4: the light the night And talked to Jay Silverman about
- 24:05Speaker 4: that the other day. I mean, they've got like double
- 24:07Speaker 4: the lights that they had last year, and we'll be
- 24:09Speaker 4: giving you more information on that. You can always visit
- 24:12Speaker 4: the Dirty Birds website dirtybirds baseball dot com if you
- 24:15Speaker 4: need more information there. I Amelia last night. You know,
- 24:18Speaker 4: we hear so much in West Virginia about the lack
- 24:21Speaker 4: of opportunities and the lack of jobs, and a lot
- 24:23Speaker 4: of that is warranted. I completely understand that. But last
- 24:26Speaker 4: night I had an opportunity to pinch at for rob
- 24:29Speaker 4: on KWS to go to the Putnam Career and Technical
- 24:32Speaker 4: Center over in Eleanor last night where they had this
- 24:35Speaker 4: job fair and it wasn't just a job fair, it
- 24:37Speaker 4: was kind of an open house that they did over there,
- 24:40Speaker 4: and they estimated well over at any given time, well
- 24:43Speaker 4: over a thousand people or in and out of that building.
- 24:45Speaker 4: And we're talking about some major hitters here that were
- 24:49Speaker 4: over there last night. People like new Core, CAMC, Appalachian Power,
- 24:54Speaker 4: Various police and emergency folks were over there, the Green
- 24:58Speaker 4: Bus company, folks actually with the high school, with the
- 25:00Speaker 4: guy who's doing some of the recruiting there. Good buddy,
- 25:02Speaker 4: my name is Jimmy Perry. Jimmy was over there last night.
- 25:07Speaker 4: So you know, I understand that in West Virginian you
- 25:10Speaker 4: cover a lot of this. We have a lot of issues,
- 25:12Speaker 4: but there are jobs available out there and employers are
- 25:16Speaker 4: begging for people. And that's what I got in talking.
- 25:20Speaker 4: I sit down with the Morgan Tinny who's the executive
- 25:23Speaker 4: director of the Putnam Development Authority, did a little interview
- 25:25Speaker 4: with Chris featured on the Morning News this morning. They're
- 25:29Speaker 4: just begging, they're begging for people, and we've got to
- 25:32Speaker 4: figure out, in my opinion, how to build a bridge here.
- 25:37Speaker 4: You know, and events like this are a good are
- 25:39Speaker 4: good part of it, because many people showed up with
- 25:41Speaker 4: you know, resumes in hand, you know, ready ready to
- 25:43Speaker 4: go to work. But we kind of do a better
- 25:45Speaker 4: job somehow of bridging these two things together.
- 25:48Speaker 6: And I think we also have to to start advertising
- 25:51Speaker 6: these jobs younger so that West Virginians feel like they
- 25:53Speaker 6: can stay and get high paying jobs. Right. Brain drain
- 25:56Speaker 6: is our biggest problem, I think, and or certainly one
- 26:00Speaker 6: of our biggest problems. So I think it's great that
- 26:02Speaker 6: they're trying to connect with younger West Virginians. But I
- 26:05Speaker 6: think even in middle school, we've got to start saying,
- 26:07Speaker 6: here's a path for you to get a high paying job.
- 26:09Speaker 4: And we were talking. I was talking with Steve Animal
- 26:12Speaker 4: about this a little bit earlier this morning. Animal, for
- 26:14Speaker 4: once and I had a serious conversation. Believe it or not,
- 26:17Speaker 4: we do from time to time, but we were talking
- 26:20Speaker 4: about both of us. And he's a little older than
- 26:22Speaker 4: I am. Okay, he's a lot older than I am.
- 26:24Speaker 4: But Animal and I were talking that both of us
- 26:27Speaker 4: being radio geeks, we knew I do in third grade
- 26:30Speaker 4: what I wanted to do. I wanted to be on
- 26:31Speaker 4: the radio, that's what. Or if it wasn't radio, it
- 26:34Speaker 4: was television or something related to entertainment media, so on
- 26:37Speaker 4: and so forth. Animal was the same way. And it
- 26:40Speaker 4: would have been nice. And I had some great teachers
- 26:43Speaker 4: in the seventies and eighties, don't get me wrong, but
- 26:45Speaker 4: it would have been nice had somebody been able to
- 26:48Speaker 4: see that in me and say well, let's get him
- 26:50Speaker 4: in classes that or more. And again, it's not knock
- 26:53Speaker 4: against the education system back then. It just wasn't done
- 26:56Speaker 4: anywhere in any field back then. But a lot of
- 26:59Speaker 4: great friend of mine from junior high in high school
- 27:01Speaker 4: who was rebuilding car engines when he was in the
- 27:03Speaker 4: seventh grade. He was taking apart cars and putting stuff
- 27:07Speaker 4: back together again. And I'm thinking somebody could have got
- 27:10Speaker 4: him then as opposed to when he was in eleventh
- 27:12Speaker 4: or twelfth grade, and got him into some of these
- 27:14Speaker 4: programs at an early earlier age. And he turned out fine,
- 27:17Speaker 4: but he could have probably been turned out more finer
- 27:20Speaker 4: for lack of a better term, if he'd have been
- 27:23Speaker 4: able to do that a little a little earlier.
- 27:25Speaker 6: This wouldn't necessarily help with journalism, because I, like you,
- 27:28Speaker 6: I kind of knew in high school was interested in writing,
- 27:30Speaker 6: but didn't find it until college, right because we didn't
- 27:32Speaker 6: have a newspaper at my high school. But I think
- 27:35Speaker 6: something cool that has happened in my journey into adulthood
- 27:39Speaker 6: is that votech and those types of careers have become
- 27:42Speaker 6: very promoted and accessible. Our legislature has put money into that,
- 27:46Speaker 6: and I think that's a good thing for West Virginians.
- 27:48Speaker 7: Right.
- 27:49Speaker 6: Not everyone is going to go to a four year college,
- 27:51Speaker 6: and I kind of like that. I think it's become
- 27:53Speaker 6: more normalized and even encouraged to pursue these other careers
- 27:58Speaker 6: because I think at least when I was in high school,
- 27:59Speaker 6: it was like, you have to go to for your jeal.
- 28:01Speaker 4: That's what they told us.
- 28:02Speaker 6: Yeah, and I still definitely support that, right, But I
- 28:04Speaker 6: think it's cool to see that there's a lot of
- 28:07Speaker 6: growth in the Votech industry and trying to reach out
- 28:09Speaker 6: to young West Virginia.
- 28:10Speaker 4: And some of the programs that they offer over there
- 28:13Speaker 4: at the at the Votech Center in a career at
- 28:16Speaker 4: technical center, I guess we're in Eleanor Putnam County. I
- 28:19Speaker 4: mean this. The school has won national awards the teacher
- 28:22Speaker 4: of the Year in that particular field. I interviewed her
- 28:25Speaker 4: last night. She is over the culinary program over there,
- 28:28Speaker 4: and that's a growing industry. When Steve and I were
- 28:30Speaker 4: talking about that earlier this morning. With everything with AI whatever,
- 28:34Speaker 4: girl's going to have to have people to actually make food.
- 28:37Speaker 4: You know, you're always going to have to have that
- 28:38Speaker 4: you can order on a kiosk if you go fast food,
- 28:40Speaker 4: but somebody's got to make it, you know what I mean.
- 28:42Speaker 4: And that's a grown field that they've got kids that
- 28:44Speaker 4: are in forensics programs over there now. They're in, you know,
- 28:47Speaker 4: in tenth eleventh grade and they're already studying forensics. A
- 28:51Speaker 4: lignement programs with guarantee placement. One of the sponsors of
- 28:54Speaker 4: this show's Bridge Valley, and they've got these different programs

- 29:00Speaker 4: By Friday, you're on the line working making making ninety
- 29:06Speaker 4: thousand dollars at eighteen years old. I mean, it's incredible.
- 29:09Speaker 4: So they do great work over there, and you'll be
- 29:12Speaker 4: hearing a whole lot more about those folks. Dave Allen

- 30:24Speaker 4: of them if they think that Trump lost the election
- 30:26Speaker 4: or won the election. I'm not going to ask about
- 30:28Speaker 4: national issues. That's not what county commissioners do, so it's
- 30:31Speaker 4: not and we're not going to take name calling and
- 30:33Speaker 4: that kind of stuff. If you have a legitimate question
- 30:36Speaker 4: about a public works project or whatever, then we'll talk
- 30:40Speaker 4: to miss Tenant and mister Walters about that. Again, it'll
- 30:44Speaker 4: be the day after the election. But if you want
- 30:46Speaker 4: to get questions in ahead of time, before the texting time,
- 30:49Speaker 4: I would appreciate it. You can just email me. My

- 30:59Speaker 4: next week and then on the a week from Monday,
- 31:01Speaker 4: which is the Monday for election day, we're gonna spend
- 31:03Speaker 4: about thirty minutes or so, thirty or forty talking to
- 31:07Speaker 4: Natalie Tenant, the Democratic nominee for County commission and Chris
- 31:10Speaker 4: Walter is the Republican nominee. And I think it's going
- 31:13Speaker 4: to be pretty good. I had a text I mentioned
- 31:15Speaker 4: that yesterday on the show, and I don't know if
- 31:17Speaker 4: I can pull it up right now or not, but
- 31:20Speaker 4: I had a text to the show that here it is.
- 31:25Speaker 4: This was from yesterday to day. Many audience members can
- 31:27Speaker 4: learn a lot from the Tenant Walters camps that there's
- 31:30Speaker 4: no reason to hate, insult, or smear the other side.
- 31:33Speaker 6: I love to hear that. Seems like it's been a
- 31:35Speaker 6: very clean race between them, and I'm looking forward to
- 31:38Speaker 6: that set down that you're gonna have the what's one
- 31:41Speaker 6: issue you're interested in hearing them talk about?
- 31:43Speaker 4: Well, I'm just gonna you know, I'm when I have
- 31:45Speaker 4: each of them, you know, just state what is it
- 31:47Speaker 4: that you want to wear? Infrastructure, things that infrastructure, the
- 31:51Speaker 4: age old things, you know, getting people. You know, Kaawa
- 31:53Speaker 4: County has suffered a major population loss, and not everybody's
- 31:58Speaker 4: moving out of state, many or choosing to move to
- 31:59Speaker 4: a counties. They're moving to Putnam County, they're moving to
- 32:02Speaker 4: the eastern Panhandle. What can they do as a county commissioner?
- 32:05Speaker 4: I mean they're not miracle workers, but what can they
- 32:07Speaker 4: do to try to get some of these people to
- 32:09Speaker 4: stay here? Just you name it all over the board.
- 32:13Speaker 6: Yeah, I think those are great questions. And I think
- 32:15Speaker 6: too just addressing some of the safety concerns I know
- 32:18Speaker 6: people have had, and infrastructure is key. I mean, with
- 32:21Speaker 6: what we've seen happen on the West Side with water
- 32:24Speaker 6: and the gas all those things. I think they'll be
- 32:25Speaker 6: interesting to hear their thoughts on that as well.

- 36:45Speaker 4: is West Virginia Watch?
- 36:46Speaker 6: Yeah, thanks for asking. We are a nonprofit newsroom serving
- 36:49Speaker 6: the whole state of West Virginia. We are for women,
- 36:53Speaker 6: which is really cool. We have all been in West Virginia. Gosh,
- 36:56Speaker 6: some of us more than a decade doing news, and
- 37:00Speaker 6: our content is free no paywall on West Virginia watch
- 37:02Speaker 6: dot com. And we also give our content for free
- 37:05Speaker 6: to newspapers around the state. So I saw this morning
- 37:08Speaker 6: that one of my stories was on the front page
- 37:10Speaker 6: of the Fairmont newspaper, which I love. As part of
- 37:12Speaker 6: our mission to help support our local papers as well,
- 37:14Speaker 6: and we mostly focus on state government, the legislature and
- 37:17Speaker 6: other issues around.
- 37:17Speaker 4: The state and good stuff. Be sure and check that out,
- 37:20Speaker 4: all right. Early voting is underway. Are you an early
- 37:22Speaker 4: voter or an election day type person?
- 37:24Speaker 6: So I'm usually an election day type person. Then I
- 37:26Speaker 6: go to work and cover the elections and eat pizza
- 37:29Speaker 6: like a good journalist. Right, But this year I am
- 37:31Speaker 6: going to early votes. I can take my daughters. They
- 37:34Speaker 6: did the primary voting with me and my six and
- 37:37Speaker 6: my four year old. They were like, when are we voting?
- 37:39Speaker 6: They're excited, So I'm going to early vote.
- 37:41Speaker 4: All right. Let me just tell you one thing though.
- 37:44Speaker 4: Don't take pictures, yes, inside the polling place.
- 37:46Speaker 6: I do now.
- 37:47Speaker 4: I learned something in my time at Secretary States. Obvious
- 37:49Speaker 4: you cannot photograph inside. It is against the law. The
- 37:52Speaker 4: photograph inside the polling Plint.
- 37:53Speaker 11: That is true.
- 37:54Speaker 6: You can, however, take your phone to use a sample
- 37:57Speaker 6: ballot if you made notes on your phone or whatever,
- 37:59Speaker 6: so you can take your phone out. But you're right,
- 38:00Speaker 6: you cannot take any photo.
- 38:01Speaker 4: Don't take pictures. Tex says one issue for both ten
- 38:04Speaker 4: and Walters has to be about the homeless vagrant problem
- 38:07Speaker 4: that has expanded far beyond Charleston. Something has to be done.
- 38:10Speaker 4: Small drivels here and there like this, or how both
- 38:13Speaker 4: Seattle and Portland started. They are now both out of
- 38:15Speaker 4: control with the homeless, doped up zombies out on the streets.
- 38:19Speaker 4: I will get that comment to them. So if you're
- 38:21Speaker 4: listening now, and I know they listen to the show,
- 38:23Speaker 4: Walters and Tenant, here's your first thing right there. We're
- 38:25Speaker 4: a week and a couple of days away that somebody
- 38:28Speaker 4: wants you to work on. Speaking of voting, Amelia, you
- 38:31Speaker 4: have a story out about motivating people to vote. Let's
- 38:34Speaker 4: talk about that.
- 38:35Speaker 6: Yeah, so we were saying just a few minutes ago,
- 38:37Speaker 6: we've seen great numbers on early voting around the state,
- 38:40Speaker 6: but West Virginia overall has abysmal voter turnout. The twenty
- 38:43Speaker 6: twenty election, we were the second worst voter turnout in
- 38:47Speaker 6: the country, with about fifty five percent around there turning
- 38:52Speaker 6: up showing out to vote, but in some counties you
- 38:54Speaker 6: had less than thirty percent turnout. So I think it's
- 38:58Speaker 6: a mixture of issues. Apathy toward political parties, a feeling
- 39:02Speaker 6: that we're going to go for Trump, so why vote? Also,
- 39:05Speaker 6: I think, you know, poverty, lack of transportation play into
- 39:08Speaker 6: it as well. So for county level political parties, they
- 39:12Speaker 6: are really trying to motivate those voters because we've had
- 39:14Speaker 6: so many counties flip to red, and in some of
- 39:17Speaker 6: these counties you've got just a thousand registrations separating Democrats
- 39:20Speaker 6: and Republicans.
- 39:22Speaker 17: So while it is expected that the state.
- 39:24Speaker 6: May give their electoral votes to Trump, in these legislative races,
- 39:28Speaker 6: those votes really make a difference, and so county local
- 39:31Speaker 6: level people have to really motivate their people to come.
- 39:33Speaker 4: Out and vote. And what I have noticed as a
- 39:36Speaker 4: trend over the last couple of years, really since sin
- 39:38Speaker 4: since Trump came into power so to speak, when he
- 39:41Speaker 4: was first elected, is and I've used this example on
- 39:44Speaker 4: the show many many times. Listeners are probably tired of
- 39:46Speaker 4: hearing it, but you can't run for the assessor of
- 39:48Speaker 4: Wetssell County that you don't say I stand beside President Trump. No,
- 39:52Speaker 4: you don't. I mean you don't because he doesn't really
- 39:56Speaker 4: put a lot of emphasis on the assessor's race on
- 39:59Speaker 4: Wetssell County, you know. But that's a selling point, and
- 40:01Speaker 4: we saw that in the primary. I'm more Trumpier than
- 40:04Speaker 4: you are, you know, Trump les Memore. No, trump les Memore.
- 40:07Speaker 4: He likes me, Moore. Kind of a thing.
- 40:08Speaker 6: Presidential elections merging with local elections are tricky because I've
- 40:12Speaker 6: seen some mailers and some ads where certain positions are saying,
- 40:16Speaker 6: you know, I'm tough on the border, I'm going to
- 40:17Speaker 6: be tough on this, and it's like that has nothing
- 40:19Speaker 6: to do absolutely in particular job that you are being
- 40:21Speaker 6: elected to do. And also West Virginia is not short
- 40:24Speaker 6: on issues that need addressed legislatively or in your local commission,
- 40:28Speaker 6: whatever it is. So yeah, it can be I think
- 40:31Speaker 6: certainly difficult for voters to say, what exactly are you
- 40:34Speaker 6: going to do to help me here in Whatsell.
- 40:36Speaker 17: Or in Parkinsburg or wherever.
- 40:38Speaker 4: Yeah, and again, politics has become we can spend an
- 40:42Speaker 4: entire four or five days talking about this Amelia. Politics
- 40:45Speaker 4: has become so nationalized now. And I've got a little
- 40:49Speaker 4: age on me more than you do. I don't remember
- 40:52Speaker 4: back when I the first election I voted in was
- 40:55Speaker 4: nineteen eighty eight. I do not remember at that time
- 40:59Speaker 4: House of down like it's people candidates for sheriff, candidates
- 41:02Speaker 4: for even governor calling out whoever was in the White
- 41:07Speaker 4: House or whoever they wanted in the White House, saying,
- 41:09Speaker 4: you know that a vote for a vote for this
- 41:11Speaker 4: person is a vote for this, you know, this other
- 41:13Speaker 4: person in Washington. It's just becomes so so nationalized now.
- 41:18Speaker 4: And that a lot of it has to do with
- 41:19Speaker 4: the thing, very thing we hold in her hand, which
- 41:22Speaker 4: is which is a phone. Everybody stays connected twenty four hours.
- 41:25Speaker 4: I'm all about the information age, but it's also known
- 41:28Speaker 4: as the misinformation age, because, as you well know, there's
- 41:31Speaker 4: more sources now to get information, and there's more sources
- 41:33Speaker 4: to give you crap information out there too.
- 41:36Speaker 6: Absolutely, And I mean if you look at Patrick Morrissey,
- 41:38Speaker 6: who's running for Governor's Republican, you look at Jim Justice
- 41:41Speaker 6: who's running for the US Senate, they both have been campaigning. Well,
- 41:45Speaker 6: certainly Jim Justice has been campaigning for Trump and Morrissey's
- 41:48Speaker 6: one of his things. He says, I think the most
- 41:51Speaker 6: I hear is I was the biggest supporter for Trump
- 41:53Speaker 6: in West Virginia, the first to come out and support him,
- 41:55Speaker 6: and so they've kind of contributed to that rhetoric as well.
- 41:58Speaker 6: I think it's really interesting that Jim Justice has done
- 42:01Speaker 6: not that much campaigning on foot. He has the weekly
- 42:05Speaker 6: press briefings, but he hasn't really traveled the state as much.
- 42:08Speaker 6: But he has gone to Pennsylvania with baby Dog and
- 42:11Speaker 6: campaigned for Donald Trump.
- 42:13Speaker 4: Got to have the dog out there. He did tell
- 42:15Speaker 4: Glenn Elliott to kiss baby Dog's high.
- 42:17Speaker 6: He did say that I hope whoever is governor next
- 42:21Speaker 6: year does not lift up a dog close to the
- 42:23Speaker 6: press table. Again, I think we're good on that one.
- 42:25Speaker 4: Tech said Amelia's thoughts on locking out independence in coming
- 42:29Speaker 4: Republican primaries, Well.
- 42:32Speaker 6: I think that's something we're going to have to grapple
- 42:34Speaker 6: with as a state. We're seeing a rising number of
- 42:36Speaker 6: independent registrations in this state, and I was looking at
- 42:40Speaker 6: county level data in some of these counties where Republican
- 42:43Speaker 6: and Democrats aren't that far away, you still have a
- 42:45Speaker 6: significant amount of people who have switched over to independence.
- 42:47Speaker 6: It's not that they're just flipping from DEM to Republican,
- 42:49Speaker 6: Republican to DEM. So that might be something we see
- 42:54Speaker 6: grappled with here in the future of Republicans want to
- 42:56Speaker 6: continue to have that stronghold.

- 45:47Speaker 18: We need leaders in the House of delegates who know
- 45:49Speaker 18: what it takes to create jobs. We need Mark Carter
- 45:52Speaker 18: in District fifty seven. All of us are struggling with
- 45:55Speaker 18: the inflation caused by Biden and Harris. I've worked with
- 45:58Speaker 18: employers paying great ways to bring them to West Virginia.
- 46:01Speaker 18: I'm committed to doing it again. Mark Carter is running
- 46:04Speaker 18: for House of Delegates to improve our economy and create
- 46:07Speaker 18: better paying jobs for our families.
- 46:09Speaker 4: Let's elect a pro jobs leader to the House.
- 46:11Speaker 18: I am Mark Carter, and I would appreciate your vote
- 46:14Speaker 18: for House of Delegates. Paid for by Mark Carter for
- 46:17Speaker 18: West Virginia, seven.

- 46:36Speaker 4: Canaly Upper Canal Valley needs to vote all Republicans out,
- 46:40Speaker 4: as they are destroying our communities by closing all of
- 46:43Speaker 4: our grade schools and we are under attack by Republicans.
- 46:46Speaker 4: Vote blue, says a texture well as.
- 46:51Speaker 6: A reporter, I'm not going to comment on political parties,
- 46:53Speaker 6: but I will say education is a key issue. Going
- 46:56Speaker 6: into this legislative session and going back to those voting numbers.
- 46:59Speaker 6: That's something political parties are really trying to stress. As
- 47:02Speaker 6: we've seen a huge push to expand school choice in
- 47:05Speaker 6: West Virginia. There are there is money leaving public schools
- 47:09Speaker 6: to go towards the Hope Scholarship, which are education saving
- 47:11Speaker 6: this account program. So that is certainly an issue. I
- 47:14Speaker 6: think political parties are trying to use specifically, specifically ones
- 47:18Speaker 6: that are are for Democrats saying, you know, we need
- 47:20Speaker 6: champions for public schools in our legislature.
- 47:23Speaker 4: We'll talk about kids. That is one of the things
- 47:26Speaker 4: that you have kind of I don't want to say
- 47:27Speaker 4: built your career because you're multifaceted as far as journalism go,
- 47:30Speaker 4: but you do focus a whole lot on on children's issues.
- 47:33Speaker 4: Your mother and uh and that probably plays some into it.
- 47:37Speaker 4: But I think you'd be doing it regardless because of
- 47:39Speaker 4: the kind of person I've got to I get to
- 47:40Speaker 4: know you pretty well. The legislature will be meeting again
- 47:45Speaker 4: here in a couple of months. Will be new faces,
- 47:47Speaker 4: as we've talked about there because some aren't running and whatever.
- 47:49Speaker 4: We don't know exactly what the makeup is going to be.
- 47:51Speaker 4: Chances are there's going to be more Republicans in there,
- 47:54Speaker 4: because that's just the way West Virginia is leaning right now.
- 47:55Speaker 4: It's not an endorsement, that's just the way that West
- 47:57Speaker 4: Virginians are leaning right now. What are some of the
- 48:00Speaker 4: biggest I mean, obviously a very obvious question, some of
- 48:03Speaker 4: the biggest obstacles that they're going to be looking at
- 48:06Speaker 4: as far as childcare issues in general.
- 48:09Speaker 6: Go, Well, you hit the nail on the head with childcare.
- 48:12Speaker 6: That was an issue that was supposed to be number one,
- 48:15Speaker 6: or at least at the top last legislative session, and
- 48:17Speaker 6: because of budget issues and maybe some behind the scenes
- 48:20Speaker 6: disagreements really within Republicans, not between Democrats and Republicans. There's
- 48:24Speaker 6: so many Republicans that a lot of the disagreements are
- 48:27Speaker 6: within them, not necessarily between the two parties. But that
- 48:30Speaker 6: issue really didn't go anywhere. We haven't seen any significant
- 48:33Speaker 6: childcare legislation pass So coming into this next legislative session
- 48:37Speaker 6: in twenty twenty five, that's going to be on the
- 48:40Speaker 6: top of the mind for many legislators. And that comes
- 48:42Speaker 6: back to workforce, which we were talking about earlier. If
- 48:45Speaker 6: you want to grow the workforce, which is a huge
- 48:47Speaker 6: issue for many people in government right now we have
- 48:50Speaker 6: the worst workforce participation rate in the country or the
- 48:53Speaker 6: second worst. You've got to be able to provide childcare,
- 48:55Speaker 6: and there are some legislative ways they can do that.
- 48:58Speaker 6: And then I think public education currently figuring out how
- 49:01Speaker 6: do we deal with our teacher shortages, how do we
- 49:04Speaker 6: deal with rashal school clothing we're probably about to see,
- 49:08Speaker 6: and supporting the growing number of kids who need IEPs
- 49:11Speaker 6: and special education services. And then also foster care. Of
- 49:14Speaker 6: course this system is still struggling. We have more than
- 49:17Speaker 6: six thousand kids in foster care. Every year we see
- 49:20Speaker 6: a number of bills come through that are aimed at
- 49:23Speaker 6: either fixing parts of the system, but now we've seen
- 49:26Speaker 6: a shift in bills to preventing kids coming into the system,
- 49:29Speaker 6: and those really didn't get the traction last year that
- 49:31Speaker 6: people their sponsors had hoped. So I think those are
- 49:33Speaker 6: the big issues to watch next year.
- 49:35Speaker 4: Texas school closures are county boards which are almost one
- 49:38Speaker 4: hundred percent Democrats. I agree, vote them out, sincerely, a Texter.

- 50:12Speaker 4: for deconsolidation. I had Senator Stuart on the show earlier
- 50:15Speaker 4: this week and he said that that very thing.
- 50:17Speaker 6: Yeah, I listened to that. I mean, school closings are
- 50:20Speaker 6: very complicated, right, It's a complex process that it's yes,
- 50:24Speaker 6: population decline and is made at county levels, but we've
- 50:27Speaker 6: also seen dollars leave public schools and as a result
- 50:30Speaker 6: of that, parents leave public schools. So's it's a complicated
- 50:32Speaker 6: issue that while it does get decided at county level,
- 50:35Speaker 6: what happens in the capital, our state capital certainly impacts
- 50:39Speaker 6: our schools down the line.
- 50:41Speaker 4: Texas Dave gas was two forty five a gallon in
- 50:43Speaker 4: parts of Kentucky Lower when Trump was president it was
- 50:46Speaker 4: two sixty five. Then Texas. The school board members who
- 50:50Speaker 4: voted to close the schools are not Republicans, well technically
- 50:53Speaker 4: they're nonpartisan. But a simple Google search, you know, you
- 50:57Speaker 4: can find out what or you can find out what
- 50:58Speaker 4: people's party is or are. It's not very it's not
- 51:02Speaker 4: very difficult to do.
- 51:03Speaker 6: I just think it's a very complex issue, and I'll
- 51:05Speaker 6: be honest, it's not something that I've written a lot about,
- 51:07Speaker 6: but it is on my radar to do after the election.
- 51:09Speaker 6: I'd really like to dive into the school closings around
- 51:11Speaker 6: the state. But it's you know, I think just looking
- 51:14Speaker 6: at the infrastructure of schools, I mean, school board authority
- 51:19Speaker 6: money only goes so far. And when I travel into
- 51:21Speaker 6: some of these more rural counties for work, these schools
- 51:24Speaker 6: need significant work and it takes money to do that.
- 51:27Speaker 6: And if you don't have the population, for various reasons,
- 51:30Speaker 6: to pay into that school system.
- 51:32Speaker 9: It doesn't work.
- 51:33Speaker 6: So yeah, like I said, it's a local issue, but
- 51:36Speaker 6: it goes up the chain as far as what's causing
- 51:38Speaker 6: the issues I think.
- 51:39Speaker 4: And the economic aspects of it. It's what I talked
- 51:41Speaker 4: to several people about, is you know, it costs more
- 51:44Speaker 4: and more to keep these old, older schools going, and
- 51:47Speaker 4: you can't necessarily get the right type of people that
- 51:49Speaker 4: can work on these old schools anymore. I mean, it
- 51:52Speaker 4: does come down to economics, sadly, and the.
- 51:54Speaker 6: Cost of materials are so much. I mean, the new
- 51:56Speaker 6: school they're building in Clinton and the price kept going
- 51:58Speaker 6: up and up and up because of the cost of curials. Right, Yeah,
- 52:02Speaker 6: I think it's it's a complicated thing. And as we
- 52:04Speaker 6: talked about last time I was on the show, a
- 52:06Speaker 6: the legislature gave school board Authority money to the Charter
- 52:09Speaker 6: Board Association for charter schools. So if you can understand
- 52:12Speaker 6: what teachers are upset about.
