  Speaker 1: seventy four. The Cowboys are trailing Washington twenty three to ten.

  Speaker 1: In the fourth quarter, Roger Staubach got knocked out of

  Speaker 1: the game. Forgot who it was that hit him. Might

  Speaker 1: have been Dave, butz I can't remember who was He

  Speaker 1: got knocked out of the game with a concussion. Clint

  Speaker 1: Longley enters the game the backup quarterback. He played at

  Speaker 1: Abilene Christian and he was kind of known as a

  Speaker 1: mad bomber because he could. He had a great arm,

  Speaker 1: a deep arm, and he let him down the field

  Speaker 1: one score. They got the ball back late and he

  Speaker 1: hits Drew Pearson on a fifty yard pass in the

  Speaker 1: waning seconds of the game. It was a hail Mary,

  Speaker 1: and the Cowboys won the game twenty four to so

  Speaker 1: and so they won the game. Two ironic things happened

  Speaker 1: The Cowboys ended up not making the playoffs. They finished

  Speaker 1: eight and six, and it was the first time they

  Speaker 1: had missed the postseasons. In nineteen sixty six and I

  Speaker 1: made the playoffs in sixty six was nineteen seventy four.

  Speaker 1: The Cardinals won the division and Washington was the wild card,
• 5:31
  Speaker 1: and so the Cowboys didn't make the playoffs. And then
• 5:33
  Speaker 1: the next summer in training camp, Clint Longley sucker punched
• 5:37
  Speaker 1: Roger Staubach in the locker room.
• 5:40
  Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, he punched.
• 5:42
  Speaker 1: Sucker punched him and he was released after that and
• 5:45
  Speaker 1: Longley never called it. He had his one moment in
• 5:47
  Speaker 1: the sun, that fifty yarder to Drew Pearson. That was
• 5:52
  Speaker 1: nineteen seventy four. Like I said, other people have other
• 5:55
  Speaker 1: memories of it as well. My most vivid Cowboys memory
• 5:59
  Speaker 1: is really it was a pretty nondescript game when I
• 6:03
  Speaker 1: was in college seventy nine, eighty eighty one, eighty two,
• 6:06
  Speaker 1: eighty three. Anyway, when I was in college, my dad
• 6:11
  Speaker 1: was a season ticket holder to the Cowboys. He and
• 6:15
  Speaker 1: two friends went in on three tickets. They had three tickets.
• 6:19
  Speaker 1: They were good seats. They were like on twenty yard
• 6:20
  Speaker 1: line lower level, about thirty rows up.
• 6:24
  Speaker 2: They were pretty good seats. But he didn't he.
• 6:27
  Speaker 1: Didn't care to go to every game and would let
• 6:30
  Speaker 1: us go in his place sometimes. And in nineteen eighty one,
• 6:35
  Speaker 1: the Cowboys were playing the Bears. I still have Walter
• 6:37
  Speaker 1: Payton and all this, and they were coming off of
• 6:40
  Speaker 1: playoff appearance, and the Cowboys were good at that time.
• 6:44
  Speaker 1: In fact, they would go to the NFC Championship that year.
• 6:46
  Speaker 1: That's the famous Dwight Clark year. My dad had no
• 6:49
  Speaker 1: interesting winning Thanksgiving game, so I went and I took
• 6:52
  Speaker 1: my I took a date with me, my girlfriend at
• 6:54
  Speaker 1: the time, and the Cowboys won the game ten nine.
• 6:58
  Speaker 1: It was really kind of nondescriptan boring, and it was
• 7:01
  Speaker 1: cold that day, and she remembered that that date that
• 7:04
  Speaker 1: day is now my wife. Wow, Linda and I were
• 7:08
  Speaker 1: dating in college back then. We would end up splitting
• 7:11
  Speaker 1: up staying friends and people know our story and all that.
• 7:13
  Speaker 1: We eventually wound up finding our way back to one.
• 7:17
  Speaker 1: But we went to that Cowboys Bears game in nineteen
• 7:20
  Speaker 1: eighty one. But there's lots of Cowboys memories included in that.
• 7:26
  Speaker 1: Our good friend Mike Hardball Hart remembers Danny White's four
• 7:31
  Speaker 1: touchdown passes and Tony Hill with a touchdown nineteen eighty five.
• 7:36
  Speaker 1: He was thirty five to seventeen over the racial slurs.
• 7:39
  Speaker 1: Washington still went by that the name the Redskins when
• 7:42
  Speaker 1: they went by that, but they didn't win that game.
• 7:45
  Speaker 1: I remember other games too that really they were back
• 7:48
  Speaker 1: to back games. It kind of embittered me. That cost
• 7:50
  Speaker 1: my team, the Rams, a chance to get in the playoffs.
• 7:52
  Speaker 1: Seventy one, the Rams played the Cowboys the only time
• 7:54
  Speaker 1: they've ever played them on Thanksgiving, and if you go
• 7:59
  Speaker 1: back and look the old school footage of that, the
• 8:03
  Speaker 1: Rams in those days used to wear white at home
• 8:05
  Speaker 1: like the Cowboys did, so it was uncommon to see
• 8:06
  Speaker 1: them where there's dark blue jerseys with the blue helmet
• 8:10
  Speaker 1: with the white Ram horn, which I think they should
• 8:12
  Speaker 1: go back to quite frankly.
• 8:14
  Speaker 2: But they played that day at Texas Stadium.
• 8:16
  Speaker 1: The Cowboys were in the middle of their big run
• 8:18
  Speaker 1: after they settled on Roger Staubach. But as the heck
• 8:21
  Speaker 1: of a game, the Cowboys beat the Rams twenty eight
• 8:23
  Speaker 1: twenty one, and they went on and won the Super Bowl,
• 8:26
  Speaker 1: and the Rams ended up missing the playoffs by a
• 8:28
  Speaker 1: half game even though they swept the forty nine Ers,
• 8:31
  Speaker 1: who won the division that year, So I remember that.
• 8:33
  Speaker 1: And then the next year, the forty nine Ers went
• 8:35
  Speaker 1: in and the Cowboys, who would end up going to
• 8:39
  Speaker 1: the NFC Championship, but the forty nine Ers thumped them
• 8:42
  Speaker 1: at Texas Totate and beat them thirty one to ten
• 8:44
  Speaker 1: that day, so I remember, and that cost the Rams
• 8:48
  Speaker 1: an opportunity to catch them again. They finished one game
• 8:50
  Speaker 1: back at San Francis, going and swept them during the year.
• 8:52
  Speaker 1: But I always I remember some of those games back then.
• 8:55
  Speaker 1: But a lot of folks have other memories of the
• 8:57
  Speaker 1: Cowboys on Thanksgiving against the Vikings and the Randy Moss

  Speaker 1: game and all.

  Speaker 2: That other stuff.
