- 0:05Speaker 1: Today's article that We'll hit for in the weeds Ball
- 0:08Speaker 1: Strike System Ball Strike System, Why MLB catchers are getting
- 0:14Speaker 1: hit in the groin more often, written by Zach Mazelin
- 0:18Speaker 1: the Athletic percent of pitches caught with one knee down
- 0:23Speaker 1: ninety six percent this year. Twenty twenty, we were at
- 0:27Speaker 1: twenty three percent even twenty twenty two. A few years
- 0:30Speaker 1: later we have fifty nine percent, and now it's basically
- 0:34Speaker 1: every pitch. That was one notable part of this conversation
- 0:38Speaker 1: in the Athletic, with twelve current informer catchers pointing to
- 0:41Speaker 1: the one knee stance being a big reason why they're
- 0:45Speaker 1: taking crotch shots more often. The other major reason that
- 0:49Speaker 1: was explained guys is slow foul tips have nearly doubled.
- 0:53Speaker 1: Not slow foul tips have nearly doubled since two thousand
- 0:56Speaker 1: and eight, doubled since two thousand and eight. There's good
- 1:00Speaker 1: stuff out there, and it's often getting tipped into the
- 1:03Speaker 1: wrong places. On the one Let's let's cover this first
- 1:07Speaker 1: and then I'll give you some quotes that I'm sure
- 1:08Speaker 1: you'll have answers for it.
- 1:10Speaker 2: But aj thoughts on why so many dudes.
- 1:12Speaker 1: Are getting nailed in the Nott that they don't have
- 1:14Speaker 1: the data for that, they don't keep track of that,
- 1:16Speaker 1: although I'm sure somebody's trying to cook that up. But
- 1:18Speaker 1: that's what everyone's saying in the sport.
- 1:20Speaker 2: Do you believe it?
- 1:24Speaker 3: Okay, this, this is all I'm saying. I know what
- 1:26Speaker 3: I caught. I had, And by the way, ninety six
- 1:29Speaker 3: ninety six percent, there's a four percent uh Higashioka because
- 1:32Speaker 3: he's like the only guy who's on two feet the
- 1:33Speaker 3: whole time, so he's like the only one that's catching
- 1:36Speaker 3: now on two feet. But I remember when I called,
- 1:38Speaker 3: especially with nobody on base man, I almost tried to call,
- 1:41Speaker 3: curl up into a ball back there and hide behind
- 1:45Speaker 3: my shin guards and use the padding and be as
- 1:49Speaker 3: be as protected as I possibly could. But now with
- 1:54Speaker 3: the one knee down, I have a son who catches
- 1:56Speaker 3: with one knee down, and he gets hit in the
- 1:59Speaker 3: inner thigh.
- 1:59Speaker 4: All the time.
- 2:00Speaker 3: Everything is exposed. There's no padding on that. When you
- 2:03Speaker 3: were on your two feet, your your your legs were flatter,
- 2:06Speaker 3: so they were behind your shin guards which are right
- 2:08Speaker 3: here crouched as you know, right, and then your legs
- 2:10Speaker 3: would go behind them, and it covered so much more area,
- 2:14Speaker 3: but now with the one nee down, that area is
- 2:16Speaker 3: just completely exposed to foul tips. And that's it. I mean,
- 2:20Speaker 3: the reason is because they're catching with the one nee
- 2:21Speaker 3: down and there's no padding there. And listen, there's gives
- 2:25Speaker 3: and takes right, You're you're you're gonna get more pitches
- 2:28Speaker 3: called strikes, but you're also gonna get hitting the nuts.
- 2:30Speaker 3: It can a little bit more. So which one would
- 2:33Speaker 3: you rather have? A guy on two legs or getting
- 2:35Speaker 3: hit on the nuts.
- 2:38Speaker 5: Obviously there's no stat that says, yeah, it's hard hit
- 2:42Speaker 5: rate and the nuts is.
- 2:44Speaker 4: Is higher than everyone else.
- 2:45Speaker 5: That is no like, here's here's my opinion of why
- 2:50Speaker 5: guys would if they are getting hit more often now
- 2:54Speaker 5: and the stat I don't see the stat to back
- 2:56Speaker 5: it up yet, but whatever, whenever the stat comes out,
- 2:58Speaker 5: if they're getting hit by more tips, it's because the
- 3:01Speaker 5: best receivers move closer to the hitter. If you move
- 3:06Speaker 5: closer to the hitter, you have less of a chance
- 3:09Speaker 5: the ball is going to be right here. And it's
- 3:11Speaker 5: always the farther away you get, the less of a
- 3:13Speaker 5: chance you have of getting hit. The closer you are
- 3:16Speaker 5: to the hitter, the better chance you are of getting
- 3:19Speaker 5: a foul tip off of you, and the best receivers
- 3:22Speaker 5: are really really close to the hitter. That's why we
- 3:25Speaker 5: see just a massive uptick in catchers interference. When I
- 3:30Speaker 5: was still playing in twenty nineteen, I was trying the
- 3:34Speaker 5: one knee thing, and they said you gotta be closer.
- 3:37Speaker 5: You got to be closer to the hitter because they
- 3:39Speaker 5: want you to get the low strike. And when that happened,
- 3:42Speaker 5: I got the first catchers interference of my entire career
- 3:47Speaker 5: in the second game that I was trying it. So
- 3:49Speaker 5: when you're closer, you're going to get hit by more pitches.
- 3:52Speaker 5: That's just the reality of the situation. The farther back
- 3:56Speaker 5: you are, the less low pitches you get. But the
- 3:59Speaker 5: more high pitches you get, when I'm saying, you get
- 4:02Speaker 5: them called strikes that are balls. So that's why guys
- 4:05Speaker 5: are getting hit more often. It's not because they're down
- 4:08Speaker 5: on one knee or But I do think we're going
- 4:11Speaker 5: to see in the next five years all Star, which
- 4:14Speaker 5: is the greatest catching gear company of all time, come
- 4:17Speaker 5: up with some type of pad for a thigh or
- 4:21Speaker 5: an inner thigh that catchers will wear.
- 4:24Speaker 4: Because that's now exposed.
- 4:28Speaker 1: Hmm, well this article took a turn and started going
- 4:34Speaker 1: down the route of the one knee catching. Okay, Austin
- 4:39Speaker 1: Hedges was quoted in here and he said, there are
- 4:41Speaker 1: still people who think it's stupid.
- 4:43Speaker 2: Those people are stupid.
- 4:45Speaker 1: It's maybe the greatest nuanced to catching ever, just for longevity.
- 4:49Speaker 1: When you think about it. You were doing a wall
- 4:51Speaker 1: sit one hundred and twenty times a game. Now I'm
- 4:54Speaker 1: just sitting there on one knee. There's no meaty leg
- 4:58Speaker 1: stress anymore. Steven Vote, who is his manager, talked about
- 5:02Speaker 1: how he thinks it added a couple of years to
- 5:04Speaker 1: his career, and then they later went over Tyler Flowers
- 5:08Speaker 1: being credited with starting the trend in twenty one.
- 5:11Speaker 4: There.
- 5:12Speaker 3: I was there with them, I was there. I played
- 5:14Speaker 3: with him. I remember in twenty sixteen we were on
- 5:16Speaker 3: the Braves my last year and he was the other
- 5:18Speaker 3: catcher and everybody in the Brave is like, what is
- 5:20Speaker 3: he doing? And he was. He was getting more low
- 5:24Speaker 3: pitches called, and that was kind of what started the
- 5:26Speaker 3: whole thing. People are complaining, you know, he's him pass
- 5:29Speaker 3: balls and wile balls are getting by him. So he
- 5:32Speaker 3: kind of started the whole thing I remember this, and
- 5:34Speaker 3: he still works with the Braves, and he'll have issues
- 5:37Speaker 3: since he's part of four three. Uh kratz. So he's
- 5:41Speaker 3: gonna he sees this. He's gonna have issue with you
- 5:42Speaker 3: that you know you said All Star was the best.
- 5:44Speaker 3: When he'll be like, oh, well we have Fource three.
- 5:46Speaker 3: So just the FYI I have you get a call
- 5:48Speaker 3: from him later. But yeah, he started this and listen
- 5:53Speaker 3: if I could have called I mean, I don't have
- 5:54Speaker 3: any problems crowds. I don't think you have any problems.
- 5:56Speaker 3: But man, I can't even imagine sitting on one ee
- 5:58Speaker 3: if you were knee savers. When I played a you
- 6:01Speaker 3: when I was with the Twins and I came up
- 6:02Speaker 3: and knee savers just came out. I remember I wore
- 6:05Speaker 3: them one time in our in our bullpenk coach Rick
- 6:07Speaker 3: stillmasic ristin p Stelly. He was like, what the bleep
- 6:11Speaker 3: are you doing? You cannot let Tom Kelly see those.
- 6:14Speaker 3: I was just trying them out, just to try him.
- 6:16Speaker 3: He's like, you look so lazy. He looks so stupid. Right,
- 6:19Speaker 3: So it was that was more it. And when you
- 6:21Speaker 3: remember Tony Paine, you had the one league out and
- 6:23Speaker 3: everyone's like, oh, it's such a showboat. Now, it's it's
- 6:26Speaker 3: all you go to little league to the big leagues,
- 6:29Speaker 3: every catcher is on one knee. It is so rare to
- 6:32Speaker 3: see a guy catch on two feet and listen, I'm
- 6:34Speaker 3: all for it. If it helps you get more strikes
- 6:36Speaker 3: and it helps your longevity and it keeps more guys healthy.
- 6:38Speaker 3: Why are we saying no to this?
- 6:41Speaker 6: Yes?
- 6:41Speaker 5: And I wore knee savers my entire career and I
- 6:43Speaker 5: got the exact I mean, catching coaches that I respected,
- 6:47Speaker 5: you can't wear those.
- 6:49Speaker 4: I went to.
- 6:49Speaker 5: I forget what organization I went to towards the end
- 6:52Speaker 5: of my career, and they're like, oh, man, in the
- 6:53Speaker 5: minor leagues, they don't they don't allow knee savers. And
- 6:57Speaker 5: I would just say, or a thumb guard. I would
- 7:00Speaker 5: wear a thumbguard and they were like, ooh no, our
- 7:04Speaker 5: minor league catching coordinator is not going to allow that.
- 7:07Speaker 5: And I'm like, okay, why why what is it going
- 7:12Speaker 5: to hurt to me? It's gonna help me. So I
- 7:15Speaker 5: wore nie savers. I was still able to get low enough.
- 7:17Speaker 5: I still was above average when receiving numbers. It's what
- 7:21Speaker 5: kept me in my career. But what else kept me
- 7:23Speaker 5: in my career we talked about at the beginning.
- 7:25Speaker 4: Of the show. I stayed healthy.
- 7:27Speaker 5: I was not a very good player in the big leagues,
- 7:30Speaker 5: but when they needed somebody, I was there to be
- 7:32Speaker 5: able to fill in. And that's the reality. And so
- 7:35Speaker 5: if hegy says being down on the knee, he's the
- 7:38Speaker 5: perfect one to ask. I was there when he was
- 7:40Speaker 5: a rookie with the Padres, and you know he's trying
- 7:43Speaker 5: to make it to the big leagues. He was an
- 7:44Speaker 5: elite defensive catcher. If he's like I was catching like
- 7:47Speaker 5: this before, now I'm catching like this at an older age,
- 7:51Speaker 5: and it helps his legs. It's genius, and it helps
- 7:55Speaker 5: him get pitches. I think there's other way of getting
- 7:58Speaker 5: other ways of getting pitches. But if it's down on
- 8:00Speaker 5: one knee.
- 8:02Speaker 4: Perfect crouch.
- 8:05Speaker 3: You know, I travel all the time, and I'm always
- 8:07Speaker 3: looking for possible tickets to go see advanced concerts MLB games.

- 9:24Speaker 1: on the show. Super thankful that you're joining us right
- 9:27Speaker 1: after making the re debut. How you doing and how's
- 9:30Speaker 1: the last few days been for you? Man, Oh wait,
- 9:35Speaker 1: I think we got your muting.
- 9:36Speaker 2: Oh there we go. Yep, go ahead, No, we got you.
- 9:38Speaker 2: Now we got you. You're good, yep great.
- 9:41Speaker 6: Yeah. Like you said, it's like debuting all over again.
- 9:44Speaker 6: It was the same emotions all day that I felt
- 9:47Speaker 6: ten years ago when I debuted. The you know, not
- 9:50Speaker 6: really sleeping the night before, not eating much during the day,
- 9:55Speaker 6: you know, a little nervousness, but also excitement, adrenaline, and
- 9:58Speaker 6: then when the game started, you know, the whole world
- 10:01Speaker 6: just kind of slowed down. And I hadn't felt that
- 10:05Speaker 6: since September twenty sixteen when I debuted, so I didn't
- 10:09Speaker 6: expect to ever feel that on a baseball field again,
- 10:12Speaker 6: and it was. It was pretty incredible. Trey.
- 10:16Speaker 3: What was it like, though? Who told you to keep going?
- 10:19Speaker 3: Because you had a nice run for a while and
- 10:21Speaker 3: we talked I think it was last spring training you
- 10:23Speaker 3: came on and we talked about it and you were
- 10:25Speaker 3: kind of like, oh, I don't know if I can
- 10:26Speaker 3: keep doing this, And then you went and did it again, right,
- 10:31Speaker 3: and now here you are.
- 10:32Speaker 6: Back in the big league.
- 10:33Speaker 3: So who kind of talked you into keeping going?
- 10:36Speaker 6: Brady Anderson is like the sole reason I'm still playing.
- 10:40Speaker 6: He reached out to me originally in July of twenty
- 10:44Speaker 6: twenty four and told me that he thinks I should
- 10:46Speaker 6: give it another shot and keep playing, And deep down
- 10:50Speaker 6: I knew that I could, but I had an extended
- 10:54Speaker 6: period of time where I didn't play well and didn't
- 10:57Speaker 6: know if I wanted to get back into the game.
- 11:00Speaker 6: And I was fine being done, but something just kind
- 11:04Speaker 6: of started eating away at me at how my career ended,
- 11:08Speaker 6: and knowing that I still had the ability, I think
- 11:13Speaker 6: would eat away at me maybe years later. So I
- 11:16Speaker 6: went and hit with him a few months after he
- 11:18Speaker 6: reached out to me, and it felt great, and the
- 11:22Speaker 6: Diamondbacks gave me the opportunity to get back in the
- 11:25Speaker 6: game that offseason.
- 11:28Speaker 5: What is what's tougher playing poorly or playing well and
- 11:33Speaker 5: not getting to get back to the place where you
- 11:36Speaker 5: want to be in the big.
- 11:37Speaker 6: Leagues, I would say, I mean, playing poorly is tough,
- 11:42Speaker 6: But you know, for a few years there, especially, you know,
- 11:45Speaker 6: I was diagnosed with cancer in twenty twenty and I
- 11:49Speaker 6: think it took a huge mental toll on me for
- 11:51Speaker 6: the years after which I didn't expect, you know, I
- 11:55Speaker 6: thought it was going to be you know I'd go
- 11:57Speaker 6: through chemo and it would be done, but you're still
- 12:00Speaker 6: really concerned about your health after the fact. And I
- 12:03Speaker 6: think my confidence took a huge hit, just kind of
- 12:07Speaker 6: slowly over the next few years, and I became a
- 12:10Speaker 6: bit of a shell of myself on the baseball field,
- 12:13Speaker 6: I think because of that. And you know, it took
- 12:17Speaker 6: being away from the game in twenty twenty four to
- 12:20Speaker 6: I think get over that and admit to myself that
- 12:24Speaker 6: I wish that I could have, you know, snapped out
- 12:27Speaker 6: of it a little bit better. But you know, hindsight's
- 12:30Speaker 6: twenty twenty so it's incredible to be back and have
- 12:34Speaker 6: the opportunity to play again with that perspective and thinking
- 12:39Speaker 6: that I was done. You know, I felt a million
- 12:42Speaker 6: miles away from from baseball. Like even this past fall,
- 12:45Speaker 6: I was like just playing tennis on my tennis team
- 12:48Speaker 6: at the country club, like I thought I was retired
- 12:52Speaker 6: for good. You know, I was getting ready to announce
- 12:54Speaker 6: it before Brady called and they Joulanuary Trey.
- 12:59Speaker 3: A couple of things. You're ranking new tennis.
- 13:02Speaker 6: I'm pretty good. I'm I'm a four. I've got like
- 13:04Speaker 6: a four or five fourhand, but like a two five backhand,
- 13:07Speaker 6: so I like go around the ball every time. My
- 13:11Speaker 6: backhands terrible, but I can. I can hit a forehand
- 13:14Speaker 6: pretty well. Serves get serves gotten pretty pretty decent too.
- 13:18Speaker 3: Okay, as long as you can get the serves in,
- 13:20Speaker 3: that's all that matters. Just get them in and then
- 13:22Speaker 3: go from there. I bring that up. I bring that
- 13:26Speaker 3: up because you look more like a tennis player than
- 13:28Speaker 3: a baseball player. Now you're like skinny, dude, Like did
- 13:32Speaker 3: you go Keto or did you go Fatkins? What did
- 13:35Speaker 3: you go here to?
- 13:36Speaker 6: I mean you're looking yeah, dude, ran and in twenty four. Yeah,
- 13:41Speaker 6: when I was done, I was like, you know, I'm
- 13:42Speaker 6: just gonna start running and get into like normal shape.
- 13:47Speaker 6: I was like two forty at one point and just
- 13:50Speaker 6: kind of felt heavy. My joints didn't feel good. So
- 13:54Speaker 6: I got in shape, and I actually like playing at
- 13:58Speaker 6: this weight a lot better. So you know, when you're
- 14:01Speaker 6: in your mid thirties, you can you gotta shed some
- 14:04Speaker 6: weight so you can move around a little bit better.
- 14:07Speaker 3: Trait do you ever? I mean, I played, I used
- 14:09Speaker 3: to play tennis a lot, and then I got the
- 14:11Speaker 3: fasci itis in my foot, and now I've had to
- 14:13Speaker 3: take like a couple months off. Have you ever had that?
- 14:15Speaker 3: How do I get rid of it?
- 14:16Speaker 6: Please tell me it's probably the shoes you're wearing.
- 14:20Speaker 3: I've tried every shoe on the you've tried.
- 14:22Speaker 6: I bought shoes off Instagram.
- 14:24Speaker 3: I bought shoes off from Korea, China and North Korea, Iran, Iraq.
- 14:30Speaker 3: I've tried every shoe.
- 14:31Speaker 6: And so get you some cocoa golfs New Balance. Okay, Okay,
- 14:39Speaker 6: that's fair, that's my recommendation.
- 14:42Speaker 3: Okay, trip right.
- 14:44Speaker 5: Try did you come in did you come in after
- 14:46Speaker 5: your three for four game the next day and go, well, whoa, whoa?
- 14:51Speaker 5: You can't over expose me here when you looked at
- 14:53Speaker 5: the line up, like you gotta there's a joke that
- 14:56Speaker 5: yo guys say, you get a big game, it's the
- 14:58Speaker 5: first time like a thousand gate days between your games.
- 15:01Speaker 5: You're like, I gotta play back to back days.
- 15:03Speaker 4: What's up with this?
- 15:04Speaker 3: Kurt?
- 15:06Speaker 6: No, I mean I'm telling you, like I told myself,
- 15:10Speaker 6: if I made it back, I'd be no matter the
- 15:13Speaker 6: situation and day like, I'm I'm gonna be ready to go.
- 15:17Speaker 6: So I'm I'm so thankful for this opportunity. So whatever
- 15:22Speaker 6: my role is, I'm thrilled to do it.
- 15:25Speaker 5: That's what I was gonna ask you. Have they said,
- 15:27Speaker 5: what your role is going to be when they call
- 15:29Speaker 5: you up? Was there a moment in Salt Lake when
- 15:31Speaker 5: they called you up? Were you on the road? Did
- 15:33Speaker 5: you get a text that you were getting called up?
- 15:35Speaker 5: How did did Brady say, hey, bro, we're calling you up? Like,
- 15:38Speaker 5: wait a minute, I thought my Triple A managers supposed
- 15:40Speaker 5: to do this.
- 15:41Speaker 6: Yeah. So after the game, our our manager in Triple
- 15:44Speaker 6: A came in and told the team that the bus
- 15:47Speaker 6: was leaving for Reno at two o'clock tomorrow, but that
- 15:50Speaker 6: I wouldn't be on it because I was going to Anaheim.
- 15:52Speaker 6: So it was. It was. It was, like I said,
- 15:56Speaker 6: like getting called up again for the first time and
- 15:59Speaker 6: just a moment. I'm always gonna remember, Trey, did.
- 16:03Speaker 3: Your teammates know who you are? Because all these guys
- 16:06Speaker 3: are so young, any of them are like, wait, what
- 16:08Speaker 3: do you mean? This was in your big league debut?
- 16:10Speaker 3: Like you played you played three years ago, Like you
- 16:13Speaker 3: are so unk right now?
- 16:16Speaker 6: Yeah. So I always joked like in Triple A, there's
- 16:20Speaker 6: always we always have kids run on the field with
- 16:23Speaker 6: us before the game, and they stand with us for
- 16:24Speaker 6: the national anthem, and like every single kid out there
- 16:29Speaker 6: like had zero idea who I was. And I'm like, yeah,
- 16:32Speaker 6: when I was good, Like, they weren't born yet, So
- 16:35Speaker 6: it makes sense to me that, you know, some of
- 16:38Speaker 6: the younger people have to go like deep into the
- 16:40Speaker 6: world to figure out who I am.
- 16:44Speaker 5: Try would it been funny? And did you did you
- 16:47Speaker 5: make the joke? You could have had one of your
- 16:49Speaker 5: teammates run. I don't know the prospects that are in
- 16:51Speaker 5: triple A. One of the teammates could have run onto
- 16:54Speaker 5: the field with you and stood at your position instead
- 16:58Speaker 5: of the kids from the stands.
- 17:01Speaker 6: I know. It's I like, absolutely loved my experience in
- 17:06Speaker 6: the minors, but yeah, I felt old at times, I'd
- 17:09Speaker 6: say the last couple of years with some of the
- 17:11Speaker 6: lingo that you know, twenty to twenty three year olds
- 17:15Speaker 6: have nowadays, there's a generational gap there with the communication,
- 17:21Speaker 6: I'd say. But they are all incredible kids, and it
- 17:24Speaker 6: was really fun to kind of be the old guy
- 17:25Speaker 6: and share some advice with them and get to play
- 17:28Speaker 6: with them.
- 17:33Speaker 5: My dog Bella would do anything for a treat, and
- 17:36Speaker 5: I want to give her a treat that will take

- 18:30Speaker 3: Do they make you do tiktoks with them? And do
- 18:32Speaker 3: they make you do all this crazy stuff?
- 18:34Speaker 4: I know?
- 18:35Speaker 6: Yeah, TikTok's an absolute like non starter for me.
- 18:40Speaker 3: Perfect. That's one of the big things that you just said,
- 18:45Speaker 3: you know, triple A for the A's or Angels. Sorry,
- 18:47Speaker 3: not the A's is in salt Lake. I played in
- 18:49Speaker 3: salt Lake long time. I played ninety eight, ninety nine,
- 18:51Speaker 3: two thousand parts of all three of those seasons in
- 18:54Speaker 3: salt Lake. Right, what's salt Lake like, because there's a
- 18:57Speaker 3: lot of talk about it being an expansion. I played
- 19:00Speaker 3: in salt Lake. I loved salt Lake City. It was awesome,
- 19:03Speaker 3: Like that was twenty five plus years ago. Right, it
- 19:06Speaker 3: was awesome. But can you give people that have never
- 19:08Speaker 3: been there what it's like as a baseball town and
- 19:11Speaker 3: what it's like to be on the Salt Lake it's
- 19:13Speaker 3: not the buzz anymore. I think it's the Bees.
- 19:15Speaker 6: Now the Bees. Yeah, it's awesome, like such a great city.
- 19:21Speaker 6: So the old stadium was downtown, and then last year
- 19:24Speaker 6: they built a new stadium about thirty minutes south of
- 19:27Speaker 6: downtown in this area called Daybreak, which is incredible. The
- 19:31Speaker 6: whole valley, whatever you want to call it, like salt
- 19:34Speaker 6: Lake City in the great area is amazing, and I
- 19:37Speaker 6: feel like they've gotten great support for the hockey team.
- 19:41Speaker 6: The Mammoth and the Jazz obviously have been there for
- 19:43Speaker 6: a long time, so it absolutely can sustain a major
- 19:47Speaker 6: league team, and I think the support would be huge there.
- 19:51Speaker 6: I think a franchise would do really well in SLC.
- 19:55Speaker 5: All right, Doug Davis is your manager? Are you sure
- 19:59Speaker 5: or not? Or he was the manager in Triple A?
- 20:02Speaker 5: If he is completely all there or not?
- 20:06Speaker 6: He dugs the man he like, he's such a he's
- 20:11Speaker 6: got such a good like way and temperament about him,
- 20:13Speaker 6: and he's he's not gonna say anything if it doesn't
- 20:16Speaker 6: need to be said. There's no fluff. It's get out there, play,
- 20:20Speaker 6: do your job. And I love that. You know, he's
- 20:24Speaker 6: old school and and you know he he knows a
- 20:27Speaker 6: lot about the game, but he lets you play it
- 20:30Speaker 6: and and I think that it works really well, especially
- 20:33Speaker 6: at that level.
- 20:34Speaker 5: He sent me down one time from Triple A to
- 20:36Speaker 5: Double A and I throw a trash can across his office.
- 20:39Speaker 4: So that was a tough time in my life.
- 20:40Speaker 6: But anyway, so Doug, he didn't take it personally.
- 20:44Speaker 4: He did not know like.
- 20:45Speaker 5: I don't think he's ever I don't think he ever
- 20:47Speaker 5: really gets mad love.
- 20:49Speaker 4: He probably liked a little bit of the energy.
- 20:51Speaker 5: Yeah, and he still has his little, like little tuft
- 20:53Speaker 5: of hair that he pulls back up the middle of
- 20:56Speaker 5: his head. My question is a triple a question. Did
- 20:59Speaker 5: you watch this series between the A's and the Brewers
- 21:02Speaker 5: at the Las Vegas launching Pad and does that give
- 21:06Speaker 5: everybody a little bit of a glimpse of maybe the
- 21:09Speaker 5: PCL numbers can get a little skewed.
- 21:14Speaker 6: Yeah, so when you play in the PCL, So I
- 21:17Speaker 6: hit a ball last night. It was a sackfly. I
- 21:20Speaker 6: hit it one oh two at thirty six, and the
- 21:23Speaker 6: first thought in my head was, oh, man, like that's
- 21:25Speaker 6: gone in Vegas, or that's gone at El Paso. But
- 21:28Speaker 6: this ain't the PCL. You know, you got to you
- 21:31Speaker 6: gotta get it, especially when the marine layer comes in
- 21:34Speaker 6: at night. So you know, earlier in the year in
- 21:39Speaker 6: the PCL, I feel like it's a little colder and
- 21:40Speaker 6: it plays pretty fair. But as the summer hits, the
- 21:44Speaker 6: ball flies, And yeah, that Vegas game was kind of
- 21:46Speaker 6: kind of crazy the other night.
- 21:50Speaker 3: Hey, by the way, you want to see a team,
- 21:52Speaker 3: check out the two thousand Salt Lake City Buzz and
- 21:53Speaker 3: get back to me, Trey if you want to see
- 21:55Speaker 3: some numbers. Well, check out that number.
- 21:58Speaker 6: Check out some of the name I'm check that out.
- 22:01Speaker 3: I think we hit I think we hit like three
- 22:02Speaker 3: twenty as a team for the whole year. So I mean,
- 22:05Speaker 3: you want to see some numbers with the PCL. Check
- 22:07Speaker 3: out that team that we had. It was it was stupid.
- 22:10Speaker 6: After we're done, that's insane.
- 22:12Speaker 3: Yeah, I think we scored a thousand runs. It was
- 22:15Speaker 3: Greaty we averaged like eight runs a game that it
- 22:16Speaker 3: was absolutely incredible.
- 22:18Speaker 6: Everybody had like six played appearance is a game.
- 22:20Speaker 3: Oh we just tell the pitchers hold him under eight
- 22:22Speaker 3: guys will win? Okay, just win? What's up here?
- 22:26Speaker 4: What year?
- 22:27Speaker 3: Thousand, two thousand, salig buzzs Salt Lake City Buzz back
- 22:30Speaker 3: when we were the buzz Still But Trey, what do
- 22:32Speaker 3: you what do you see in the Angels? I mean,
- 22:34Speaker 3: you've been around, you've been on good teams. What do
- 22:36Speaker 3: you see in the Angels when you go there? And
- 22:38Speaker 3: Kurtzuzuki first year manager? But just what do you see
- 22:41Speaker 3: in the players? I saw something the other day where
- 22:43Speaker 3: they're saying Netto shouldn't be playing shortstop? Like wait, what,
- 22:46Speaker 3: like what are we talking about here? Like you see
- 22:48Speaker 3: you see these guys on every day basis.
- 22:50Speaker 6: He's incredible up he's so good at short I don't know,
- 22:56Speaker 6: I see all there's really it's a really talented team.
- 23:00Speaker 6: And in spring training I saw it and and that's
- 23:03Speaker 6: kind of what kept me going too, was I I
- 23:05Speaker 6: really wanted to be a part of this team and
- 23:09Speaker 6: this franchise. And you know, the al is is pretty open,
- 23:15Speaker 6: it seems this year. So it's a really talented team.
- 23:19Speaker 6: I'm thrilled to be a part of it. And and
- 23:23Speaker 6: you know, I think that we can do a lot
- 23:24Speaker 6: of great things.
- 23:28Speaker 2: Hey uh oh, I got one. Thank you. Any good
- 23:33Speaker 2: combos with Trout so far? And did you know him prior.
- 23:38Speaker 6: Just from spring training? Dude, he's I mean I've obviously
- 23:43Speaker 6: played against him for a long time, and you know,
- 23:46Speaker 6: to to be performing at the level that he has
- 23:50Speaker 6: his whole career is you know, nearly impossible to do.
- 23:56Speaker 6: He's one of the few few people in the world
- 23:58Speaker 6: that can do what he does. He's the man, super humble,
- 24:04Speaker 6: great guy, just goes out there every night and plays
- 24:08Speaker 6: hard and he's done that his whole career. So it's
- 24:11Speaker 6: an honor to get to play with him.
- 24:14Speaker 1: I want to finish this conversation kind of with the
- 24:17Speaker 1: same theme we started it on, because the story is
- 24:20Speaker 1: awesome to be back after a few years in the
- 24:22Speaker 1: big leagues. Do you think anybody's going to watch and
- 24:24Speaker 1: be inspired? And it doesn't necessarily have to be like, oh,
- 24:27Speaker 1: somebody's been out of the game for two years and
- 24:29Speaker 1: they go, hey, Trey, mind Seed's back, let me give
- 24:32Speaker 1: this a shot. But just in general, I like talking
- 24:34Speaker 1: to guys that have the inspirational story. Sometimes it's hey,
- 24:37Speaker 1: it took me forever to get to the Biggs, or
- 24:39Speaker 1: in this case, hey, I had to have a single
- 24:41Speaker 1: individual tell me you've still got it. You need to
- 24:43Speaker 1: take another run at this.
- 24:46Speaker 6: Yeah, I think just one person believing and you can
- 24:49Speaker 6: make all the difference. If Brady didn't text me that summer,
- 24:53Speaker 6: I wouldn't still be playing. I probably would have retired
- 24:56Speaker 6: a few months later and been okay with it. But
- 25:01Speaker 6: I think years down the line, I would have looked
- 25:02Speaker 6: back and wondered what if. And I knew it was
- 25:05Speaker 6: going to be hard. I knew it wasn't going to
- 25:07Speaker 6: be necessarily glamorous, that I'd have to kind of like
- 25:10Speaker 6: start start over again, And from an analytical perspective somebody
- 25:16Speaker 6: at my age and the position I play is not,
- 25:22Speaker 6: you know, going to be necessarily very appealing on paper.
- 25:26Speaker 6: But I'm so glad to have been given the opportunity
- 25:30Speaker 6: to come back. And you know, I still can't believe
- 25:34Speaker 6: I'm here and that it happened.
- 25:37Speaker 1: Yeah, it's inspirational. It's awesome, man. We talked about it yesterday.
- 25:40Speaker 1: We were pumped to have you on for this and
- 25:42Speaker 1: we have a lot of young ball players that listen,
- 25:44Speaker 1: so it means a lot. Trey, thank you so much
- 25:46Speaker 1: for joining us. Great to catch up with you. Keep
- 25:48Speaker 1: doing your thing.
- 25:49Speaker 2: We're watching.
- 25:50Speaker 6: Appreciate you guys.
- 25:52Speaker 2: Thank you, Tuxi, thanks for having me on.
