- October 15 Don't Feed the Story That Divides People Topic: Gossip. Scripture: Proverbs 6:16–19 16 There are six things which Yahweh hates; yes, seven which are an abomination to him: 17 arrogant eyes, a lying tongue, hands that shed innocent blood, 18 a heart that devises wicked schemes, feet that are swift in running to mischief, 19 a false witness who utters lies, and he who sows discord among brothers. Context Proverbs lists destructive patterns God hates, ending with the person who deliberately sows discord. The list places divisive speech alongside pride, deceit, violence, and schemes of harm. It treats relational division as morally serious. Let It Shape Your Life Gossip often arrives dressed as concern. “I probably shouldn’t say this, but…” “You didn’t hear it from me…” “I’m only telling you so you can pray.” Proverbs does not treat divisive speech as harmless entertainment. Stories shape reputations, loyalties, workplaces, churches, families, and friendships. Even true information can be used irresponsibly when the purpose is humiliation, entertainment, or recruiting allies. That does not mean serious wrongdoing should be hidden. Abuse, danger, harassment, fraud, and misconduct may need to be reported to people with responsibility to act. Gossip is different: it spreads what does not need to be spread to people who cannot responsibly help. Before repeating the story, ask: Is it true? Is it mine to tell? Is this person part of the solution? Am I seeking help, or am I feeding division? Think About It What story are you tempted to repeat that would be better taken to the person involved or to someone who can actually help?
