- 0:00You're listening to the Play Therapy Podcast with Dr. Brenna Hicks,
- 0:04your source for centered and focused play therapy coaching.
- 0:08Hi,
- 0:08I'm Dr. Brenna Hicks,
- 0:09The Kid Counselor.
- 0:10This is the Play Therapy Podcast where you get
- 0:12a master class in child-centered play therapy
- 0:15and practical support and application for your
- 0:17work with children and their families.
- 0:19Today's episode,
- 0:20we are tackling a new series.
- 0:22We just finished MythBusters,
- 0:24which was a lot of fun.
- 0:25And we are diving into a completely new series.
- 0:28This will be a short one,
- 0:29probably only 7 or so episodes,
- 0:31but we're going to talk through
- 0:34what's wrong with our field.
- 0:36Which I know isn't the most pleasant of topics
- 0:39for a series,
- 0:40but y'all,
- 0:41this is stuff we need to talk about.
- 0:43And this is stuff that we can't shove under the rug and it's
- 0:45stuff that we can't just accept as the way that it is,
- 0:49air quote.
- 0:50This is stuff that we need to address.
- 0:52We need to be vocal about.
- 0:53We need to confront
- 0:55common practice.
- 0:56We need to confront what has become accepted
- 1:00because it flies in the face of child-centered play therapy,
- 1:03and
- 1:04I think that
- 1:05it's our due diligence
- 1:07and it's required of us to
- 1:10not take things at face value.
- 1:12And actually determine what is best practice
- 1:15and,
- 1:15and what are our motivations and what are we trying to accomplish and,
- 1:18and how do we remain adherent to the model
- 1:21at all.
- 1:21So,
- 1:22we're gonna have a short series,
- 1:23What's Wrong with our field.
- 1:25And today,
- 1:26I want to tackle
- 1:28some feedback I got
- 1:29from one of the conferences in which I spoke.
- 1:33And
- 1:35We get
- 1:36anonymous survey feedback.
- 1:37So,
- 1:38obviously,
- 1:38I can't connect to attendee,
- 1:41but I get all of the scores,
- 1:42you know,
- 1:43APT does all of the scoring.
- 1:46And
- 1:47they give quantitative and qualitative.
- 1:49And so,
- 1:49you know,
- 1:50it's like the
- 1:511 through 5
- 1:53Likert scale kind of thing.
- 1:55And then they're able to say whatever they want in the,
- 1:58you know,
- 1:59additional comments.
- 2:00And so I'm able to read all of that every time I speak.
- 2:04And the most recent conference
- 2:06at which I spoke.
- 2:09I mean,
- 2:09the vast majority,
- 2:10there were 150 some odd attendees.
- 2:12So
- 2:13the vast majority,
- 2:14very,
- 2:14very positive feedback.
- 2:17But of the ones that were not positive feedback,
- 2:20It was scathing
- 2:23responses.
- 2:24And I'm not going to deep dive it.
- 2:26I'm not going to pay it a whole lot of airtime.
- 2:29But I do want to address a couple of the things that were said.
- 2:33Because
- 2:33I think it speaks to a bigger issue,
- 2:36a bigger concern,
- 2:37and a bigger problem.
- 2:39About being a play therapist.
- 2:42If
- 2:43the perception
- 2:45is as indicated in the feedback.
- 2:48And
- 2:49so,
- 2:50let me go back before I start telling the story about the feedback,
- 2:52let me go back to
- 2:54Rogers
- 2:55for a sec.
- 2:57I mean,
- 2:57I should probably go back to Rogers for,
- 2:59for weeks on end,
- 3:00but
- 3:00in this episode,
- 3:01let me go back there for a second.
- 3:03We know what Rogers was about.
- 3:05We know the core conditions.
- 3:08We know unconditional positive regard.
- 3:11We know genuineness.
- 3:13We know empathy.
- 3:14We know congruence.
- 3:16We know relationship at the heart of everything that we do.
- 3:20The belief that humans
- 3:22want to become better,
- 3:24and they do that within the confines of certain conditions.
- 3:28And we can trust them
- 3:31to do their own healing work.
- 3:33We don't have to be the expert.
- 3:35We don't have to be the one governing and dictating things.
- 3:38So,
- 3:39that was Roger's
- 3:41theory
- 3:42that was posited.
- 3:43Then ax line
- 3:45Was able to say,
- 3:47OK,
- 3:47so
- 3:48person-centered approach,
- 3:50client-centered approach,
- 3:52wow,
- 3:52what if the person and the client is a child,
- 3:55then what?
- 3:58So the ax line
- 4:00Takes Roger's work and says,
- 4:02Here's what this would look like if it was a child
- 4:05in the room with us.
- 4:07And then Landreth
- 4:09gave us
- 4:10actionable skill-based
- 4:14operations
- 4:15of how to
- 4:17work with a child
- 4:19in a
- 4:20client-centered way.
- 4:22So,
- 4:22it kind of took that progression from Rogers to Axline to Landreth
- 4:27to the CCPT that we know today.
- 4:31And at the heart of it all,
- 4:33at every step along the way.
- 4:36Was deep honor,
- 4:38love,
- 4:39acceptance,
- 4:39and respect.
- 4:41For the person
- 4:45That
- 4:46known and stated.
- 4:49My heart breaks for kids.
- 4:52All the time
- 4:54Truly,
- 4:55deeply,
- 4:56genuinely
- 4:58breaks.
- 4:59For kids,
- 5:00for their pain,
- 5:02for their struggles,
- 5:04for their
- 5:05Experiences
- 5:07for the trauma.
- 5:08For
- 5:10the situations in which they live,
- 5:12for the relational stuff,
- 5:13for the social stuff,
- 5:15for the social media influence,
- 5:16for the screens and the addiction
- 5:18to devices,
- 5:20for
- 5:20the divorce stats,
- 5:22for the abuse,
- 5:23for the neglect,
- 5:24for the,
- 5:25for all of it.
- 5:27My heart breaks for kids.
- 5:31And
- 5:32the feedback that I got.
- 5:35From the conference
- 5:38From several individuals.
- 5:41Was that
- 5:42I know how to turn on the waterworks when it suits me,
- 5:45end quote.
- 5:49And I could take that personally,
- 5:50and I,
- 5:51I could be offended or hurt or angry or all kinds of things about it.
- 5:55But my,
- 5:56my takeaway was.
- 5:59What is wrong with our field
- 6:01that our hearts don't break for kids?
- 6:04How do you do this work?
- 6:06How do you
- 6:08see children?
- 6:09How do you call yourself a play therapist?
- 6:13If your heart doesn't break
- 6:15for what these kids are going through.
- 6:17If your heart doesn't tear in two at the pain they bring in.
- 6:21And they give you a front row seat to witness them dealing with all of that.
- 6:26The dark and the dreary
- 6:29and the depth of the misery.
- 6:32All of it
- 6:33They invite us in and we walk that journey with them.
- 6:36You don't walk away from that unfazed.
- 6:39You don't walk away from that as if it was no big deal.
- 6:42I don't know how you could.
- 6:45And
- 6:46when I think about what that says,
- 6:48that statement
- 6:50that it was all a show and that it was just,
- 6:53I was just crying to make a point or to,
- 6:56you know,
- 6:56get empathy,
- 6:57I don't even know really what that meant other than
- 6:59I can turn on the waterworks when it suited me.
- 7:03Y'all,
- 7:04I lovingly and gently.
- 7:07Say this
- 7:09You should not work with kids
- 7:11if you don't cry for them every once in a while.
- 7:14It's just that simple.
- 7:15I'm not saying you bring it home with you.
- 7:17I'm not saying that you carry it around as a burden.
- 7:20I'm not saying that you can't separate work from personal.
- 7:23I'm not saying that you get too invested in your clients.
- 7:26I'm not saying that
- 7:28you let their burden become your burden.
- 7:29There are boundaries.
- 7:31There have to be.
- 7:32That's self-care and that's self-preservation and that
- 7:35makes sure that you don't burn out
- 7:37and it's ethics and there's all kinds of things that go in
- 7:41to
- 7:42making sure
- 7:43that we hold lines
- 7:45and we have boundaries.
- 7:48But every once in a while.
- 7:50It's just going to hit and it's OK to cry.
- 7:54Some of the kids that I've worked with in 21 years.
- 7:58The stuff that they played out.
- 8:01It was crushing.
- 8:03To watch crushing.
- 8:05If you look at the state of children right now,
- 8:08their childhoods are robbed from them.
- 8:10Their play has been taken away.
- 8:12They spend all their free time on devices.
- 8:15They don't know how to have relationships.
- 8:17They don't know how to interact with anybody.
- 8:19They don't know what free play is like
- 8:21because they have helicopter parents that hover over them
- 8:23and manage,
- 8:24micromanage every second of their day.
- 8:26They're overscheduled.
- 8:27They have homework in kindergarten.
- 8:29The divorce rate is 7.5 out of 10 families.
- 8:32The,
- 8:33the.
- 8:34Drug crisis,
- 8:35the,
- 8:35I,
- 8:35I mean,
- 8:36gosh,
- 8:36I can go on and on and on.
- 8:39If that doesn't strike a chord within you as a play therapist.
- 8:45I don't think you're in the right profession.
- 8:48I don't think you care deeply enough about kids.
- 8:51If this doesn't break you in two sometimes.
- 8:55And the beauty of child-centered play therapy is.
- 8:58That we keep showing up.
- 9:01Because
- 9:01it's not about us and it's not up to us,
- 9:04and we're not coming in to fix.
- 9:06We're not coming in to rescue.
- 9:07It's not our job to be the savior.
- 9:09It's not our job to be the dictator of what's going to happen when.
- 9:12We don't rush the pace.
- 9:13We don't force stuff.
- 9:14We don't have agenda.
- 9:15We show up
- 9:17and we sit in the muck in the mire and all that crap.
- 9:22Because that's what CCPT is all about.
- 9:25We are CCPT.
- 9:28And we hold it together in the playroom
- 9:31because that's what's required of us.
- 9:33We're adherent,
- 9:33we're faithful,
- 9:34we're neutral,
- 9:35we're calm.
- 9:36We don't allow ourselves to get charged.
- 9:39We don't interrupt the process.
- 9:41We don't deviate from the model.
- 9:44To the best of our ability,
- 9:45we sit in that space,
- 9:47we sit in the pocket of all that stuff.
- 9:50And we hold it together for the child.
- 9:53Because
- 9:53we trust that the child is doing meaningful,
- 9:56necessary,
- 9:56impactful work.
- 9:59And
- 10:00we get to the other side of that session or that case,
- 10:04and
- 10:05It's like,
- 10:05man,
- 10:06can you believe what that kid worked through?
- 10:09Can you believe how brave that kid was?
- 10:11Can you believe how much courage that took?
- 10:14Can you believe the transformation that we witnessed?
- 10:17Man,
- 10:17that's amazing.
- 10:20That's child-centered play therapy,
- 10:21but it doesn't come without tears.
- 10:24It doesn't come without heartache and pain.
- 10:26Y'all,
- 10:27it's OK to feel,
- 10:28it's OK to be human,
- 10:30it's OK to cry every once in a while.
- 10:33That's who we are.
- 10:35There's a gentle,
- 10:36quiet confidence to this work.
- 10:39Because
- 10:39we know how effective it is.
- 10:42So,
- 10:42I'm never emotional over the fact that I'm confused or,
- 10:45or frustrated or floundering or gosh,
- 10:48I'm hoping and I'm not really sure what's going on.
- 10:51It's not that kind of pain and tears.
- 10:53It's pain and tears on behalf of our kids.
- 10:57Our clients who trust us every single hour that they're in the playroom with us
- 11:01to walk alongside them.
- 11:03And serve as guide rails.
- 11:05That's an honor.
- 11:06It's a privilege.
- 11:07It's a gift.
- 11:08It's a blessing.
- 11:10On both sides.
- 11:12But it doesn't make it easy.
- 11:14And it doesn't make it any less hard on certain days.
- 11:18And sometimes
- 11:20you just have to cry for your kids.
- 11:23Please don't lose the tenderness of this model.
- 11:27Please don't feel guilty
- 11:28when
- 11:29you're emotional about stuff.
- 11:32That's what CCPT is all about.
- 11:35Its relationship.
- 11:38Think about
- 11:39a strong relationship you have in your life.
- 11:41It doesn't matter who,
- 11:42your friend,
- 11:43your spouse,
- 11:43your
- 11:44children,
- 11:45your parents,
- 11:45your whoever.
- 11:47Think about a close relationship you have.
- 11:51Do you celebrate when they celebrate?
- 11:54Do you grieve when they grieve?
- 11:56Do you feel their pain when they're in pain?
- 11:57Do you cry sometimes because they're crying?
- 11:59Of course you do.
- 12:01That's relationship.
- 12:04That's at the heart of what we do as CCPT,
- 12:07and I think it is a
- 12:10Sad,
- 12:10tragic,
- 12:11egregious
- 12:13norm right now.
- 12:15That
- 12:15we act as if this is just a job.
- 12:18And play therapy says you don't,
- 12:20you don't need to feel and you don't need to
- 12:22get invested and you don't need to get involved and
- 12:24you just go and see your clients and check your boxes and go home.
- 12:27That's not what CCPT is all about.
- 12:30So don't let that get forgotten.
- 12:32Don't let that get lost.
- 12:35We are tender,
- 12:36we are empathic,
- 12:38we are congruent.
- 12:41We are genuine
- 12:43And sometimes that means we cry over our kids.
- 12:47That's what makes us CCPT.
- 12:50I love y'all.
- 12:51We'll talk again soon.
- 12:52Bye.
