- 0:07Speaker 1: The Season with Peter Schrager is a production of the
- 0:09Speaker 1: NFL in partnership with iHeartRadio. Hey, everybody, welcome to another
- 0:24Speaker 1: episode of the Season with Peter Schrager. We are now
- 0:27Speaker 1: in the second week of August. Preseason football is upon us.
- 0:30Speaker 1: There's a full slate of games this weekend. We already
- 0:33Speaker 1: had the Hall of Fame game last Thursday, the Hall
- 0:36Speaker 1: of Fame induction ceremonies. Hard Knocks's premiere in this week
- 0:39Speaker 1: Football's here, like football is here and it feels good.
- 0:41Speaker 1: And if you listen to this podcast, you come to
- 0:43Speaker 1: get your little taste of football, but also learn something new.
- 0:46Speaker 1: I thought one of the most interesting stories of the
- 0:48Speaker 1: week was that Tennessee Titans coach Mike Vrabel came out
- 0:52Speaker 1: and said he'll have assistant head coach and his defensive
- 0:54Speaker 1: line coach Terrell Williams beat a head coach in the
- 0:56Speaker 1: preseason opener against the Bears on Saturday, and it seems
- 1:00Speaker 1: like it's something that'd be on the bottom line. Taker, Oh,
- 1:02Speaker 1: that's nice story. This is like an incredible realization I
- 1:06Speaker 1: just had and an epiphany that, oh my gosh, like
- 1:09Speaker 1: these preseason games mean nothing. Let assistant coaches, coach. We
- 1:13Speaker 1: always talk about how hard it is to get an
- 1:15Speaker 1: opportunity to showcase your skills when you're an assistant and
- 1:19Speaker 1: kind of climb that ladder. This is the opportunity. I
- 1:22Speaker 1: love this from Vrabel. So here's Terre Williams, who has
- 1:25Speaker 1: twenty six years of coaching under his belt, twelve in
- 1:28Speaker 1: the NFL. He's been, you know, Titans defensive line coach
- 1:32Speaker 1: since Vverbel got there in twenty eighteen. And now all
- 1:36Speaker 1: of a sudden, you're like, all right, give an opportunity
- 1:38Speaker 1: to this guy. And over the last few years the
- 1:40Speaker 1: Titans and not a not a headline team by any means,
- 1:43Speaker 1: but their defensive lineman Jeffrey Simmons been to the Pro
- 1:46Speaker 1: Bowl a bunch of times. They've had undrafted guys like
- 1:49Speaker 1: Tierre Tart and Nikwon Jones and Jayden Peevy all make
- 1:53Speaker 1: the team. And one of the reasons is Big T
- 1:56Speaker 1: who's the coach, and you know his assistant, Clinton McMillan,
- 1:59Speaker 1: he's going to go and do the defensive line. Those
- 2:01Speaker 1: guys have been huge. And you know, we talk about
- 2:04Speaker 1: the issue with the coaching hires and how it's usually
- 2:06Speaker 1: nepotism more so only offensive coaches. This is almost like
- 2:12Speaker 1: unlocking a key. And I didn't expect it because I
- 2:14Speaker 1: had not heard about it. And here Verbel drops this,
- 2:17Speaker 1: and I thought, Okay, what if this was required? What
- 2:21Speaker 1: if every coach, and not just not the first year coach,
- 2:23Speaker 1: but like, say your guy like Rabel, who's a made
- 2:25Speaker 1: man and he's in his fifth year. Say your Andy Reid,
- 2:28Speaker 1: who's in your twenty something year, you know, as a
- 2:30Speaker 1: head coach, and you're already nearly a decade in with
- 2:33Speaker 1: the Chiefs. Maybe one of those three preseason games, an
- 2:37Speaker 1: assistant coach is the head coach and he wears the
- 2:39Speaker 1: hat and he gets to do it all, and it's
- 2:41Speaker 1: him leaving the team out in the tunnel. Here's the
- 2:44Speaker 1: parameters I would make it if a coach is there
- 2:48Speaker 1: for five years or more with a team, So five
- 2:51Speaker 1: years or more go through the list. That's a lot
- 2:53Speaker 1: of coaches. At least one of those games has to
- 2:57Speaker 1: have an assistant coach as the head coach, and that
- 3:00Speaker 1: could be anyone. You could put your long time offensive
- 3:03Speaker 1: line coach in there. You can get your defensive coordinator
- 3:05Speaker 1: out there, or you can do what Mike Frabel does.
- 3:07Speaker 1: And he's got a defensive line coach in Terro Williams
- 3:10Speaker 1: handling the head coaching duties. I'm going to watch this
- 3:13Speaker 1: game on Saturday. Yes, Justin Field is playing, so I
- 3:15Speaker 1: want to see that. I also am really interested in
- 3:17Speaker 1: will Levis and then of course Malik Willis as well
- 3:20Speaker 1: from the Titan side. But I'm also curious to see
- 3:23Speaker 1: if we could even notice a difference if you've got
- 3:25Speaker 1: an assistant coach getting a chance to be a head coach.
- 3:27Speaker 1: And I want to hear his response afterwards that that
- 3:30Speaker 1: was my big takeaway from this week's news. And the
- 3:33Speaker 1: other one was Sean Payton coming out pretty aggressively and
- 3:36Speaker 1: pretty hard, and that's really been coach Payton's mantra this summer.
- 3:40Speaker 1: It seems like saying he doesn't want any guys wearing
- 3:44Speaker 1: Gilligan hats on preseas, which means like those bucket hats,
- 3:46Speaker 1: they all there. But also no in game interviews during
- 3:51Speaker 1: the preseason, which has become a staple of these local broadcasts,
- 3:54Speaker 1: like he's not here for that. We had a really
- 3:56Speaker 1: spirited debate on Good Morning Football about this, and I
- 4:00Speaker 1: was like, it's a preseason, like let if Jerry Judy
- 4:04Speaker 1: or you know you, Russell will an add to the
- 4:07Speaker 1: local broadcast. They get two of these, maybe three of
- 4:09Speaker 1: these a year. Let them interview with the local news
- 4:12Speaker 1: guy who's the sideline reporter, local newscal and Jason mccordy
- 4:16Speaker 1: was like, hell no, like get rid of that. This
- 4:18Speaker 1: is about getting better and the veterans should be watching.
- 4:20Speaker 1: And I'm like, all right, there you go. There's the
- 4:22Speaker 1: ex player versus the talking head difference right there. Some
- 4:27Speaker 1: other quick things before we get to our guests. Who's
- 4:29Speaker 1: a great one one? Aaron Aaron warn Kaufman, my producer.
- 4:32Speaker 1: Have you seen Oppenheimer? I haven't yet, unfortunately not gotten
- 4:38Speaker 1: to the theater. I saw it last night. Are you
- 4:41Speaker 1: a Nolan head? Like, are you a guy who has
- 4:43Speaker 1: seen all the Nolan movies? And like or one of
- 4:46Speaker 1: those he's got people who first night they'll see it.
- 4:48Speaker 1: But have you gotten to most of Chris Nolan films?
- 4:51Speaker 2: I have, except for Tenant and surprisingly Interstellar I also
- 4:56Speaker 2: haven't seen, which I've heard is great, but it's great.
- 5:00Speaker 1: I am a Chris Nolan fan, but I'm not one
- 5:02Speaker 1: of those guys who's rushing to the theater the first
- 5:04Speaker 1: night However, my wife, my son, my daughter are away.
- 5:08Speaker 1: This week, I had an open night. A lot of
- 5:10Speaker 1: guys decided to go out and rage with their friends.
- 5:13Speaker 1: I call my friend and say, can we please go
- 5:16Speaker 1: see Oppenheimer? It's three hours long. I don't think I
- 5:18Speaker 1: have three hours open the rest of the year. Have
- 5:21Speaker 1: you been to the movie theater called the Ipiic in
- 5:25Speaker 1: South Street Seaport. No, okay. So it's like one of
- 5:29Speaker 1: these IMAX deals in New York City, but it's a
- 5:32Speaker 1: smaller theater and they serve you food, almost like the
- 5:35Speaker 1: Alamo Draft House, I guess, but it's like high end
- 5:38Speaker 1: and here's the comedy of it. So I went with
- 5:40Speaker 1: my friend Alex, who happens to be a Bills fan,
- 5:42Speaker 1: very appropriate with Who's coming on as our guest. And
- 5:45Speaker 1: Alex and I have seen movies together in the past.
- 5:47Speaker 1: I remember we saw The Post, which was epic. We
- 5:51Speaker 1: saw that a couple of years back. I think we
- 5:54Speaker 1: saw The Big Short together, the two of us, like
- 5:57Speaker 1: we see movies together. Then we took our sons to
- 5:59Speaker 1: see Sonic together a few years back as well, So
- 6:03Speaker 1: that's my movie.
- 6:04Speaker 3: Guy.
- 6:05Speaker 1: We look up at the IPIC there like there's a
- 6:06Speaker 1: six fifteen showing, but there's only two seats available, and
- 6:11Speaker 1: those two seats are on something that is basically a
- 6:15Speaker 1: Shay lounge, and the three of us together together, and
- 6:20Speaker 1: it was in the first row. So a three hour movie.
- 6:25Speaker 1: Cuddling with my friend Alex, watching the movie with my
- 6:30Speaker 1: neck just ninety degrees. And let me tell you something,
- 6:33Speaker 1: I freaking loved it. I loved it, loved it. I
- 6:36Speaker 1: loved it. I loved it. It was awesome. There's been
- 6:40Speaker 1: the day after. It's what I always do. I listened
- 6:42Speaker 1: to all the podcasts. I'm like, all right, what are
- 6:44Speaker 1: the guys at the Big Picture have to say? And
- 6:45Speaker 1: then like Chris Ryan starts breaking it down, and I'm
- 6:47Speaker 1: listening to Andy Greenwald and whoever else is Sean Fantasy
- 6:51Speaker 1: and Amanda Dobbins, and I'm like, what do they got?
- 6:53Speaker 1: And then I do a little deep dive on Oppenheimer
- 6:55Speaker 1: himself and what are the historical inaccuracies. I'm not gonna
- 6:59Speaker 1: spoil anything. This movie's great. Anybody who tells you that
- 7:03Speaker 1: the last hour is too long or drags on doesn't
- 7:06Speaker 1: appreciate great writing and a great reveal at the end,
- 7:10Speaker 1: and this final scene where it's Oppenheimer and Einstein, and
- 7:16Speaker 1: it's I'm not gonna spoil anything. It leaves you speechless,
- 7:21Speaker 1: like all these Christopher Nolan movies do with the exclamation
- 7:24Speaker 1: mark at the end where you're like ah, then they
- 7:27Speaker 1: go to the credits. I loved it, loved Oppenheimer. Can't
- 7:30Speaker 1: wait to discuss it with Aaron Rodgers when he sees
- 7:33Speaker 1: it again, because when I asked him about it, he
- 7:36Speaker 1: said he saw it at nine o'clock at night, which
- 7:37Speaker 1: you cannot do. You have to be like fully in
- 7:40Speaker 1: this movie moves and the cameos from not only a
- 7:44Speaker 1: list actors. I'm not spoiling anything, but like Remy Mallick
- 7:47Speaker 1: has like four lines in this movie and he's awesome.
- 7:51Speaker 1: Casey Affleck shows up and is tremendous and plays a
- 7:54Speaker 1: heel and is just evil in this movie and you're
- 7:56Speaker 1: like ah. But also guys that I haven't like, Josh
- 8:00Speaker 1: Hartnet has a big role. I haven't seen Josh Hartnet
- 8:02Speaker 1: and a lot of movies lately. I love Jason Clark.
- 8:06Speaker 1: That's the actor. You know him from Zero Dark thirty,
- 8:09Speaker 1: but you also know him from that Winning Time series.
- 8:12Speaker 1: He plays Jerry West. I think in that one, and
- 8:14Speaker 1: he's great. So just cameo's galore, familiar faces, some surprise
- 8:19Speaker 1: cameos at the end that you're like, is that who
- 8:21Speaker 1: I think that is? And it is, and I would
- 8:24Speaker 1: be shocked if not only is it Killian Murphy or
- 8:27Speaker 1: Silly and Murillian.
- 8:28Speaker 2: I think it's yeah, I don't know. I think it's
- 8:31Speaker 2: Silly and Murphy.
- 8:31Speaker 1: I remember seeing him in that movie Red Eye with
- 8:34Speaker 1: like Rachel McAdams, so they going like years ago and
- 8:36Speaker 1: being like that guy's spooky looking. Well, he's amazing as
- 8:39Speaker 1: Jay Robert Oppenheimer. If he's not nominated for Best Picture,
- 8:42Speaker 1: Robert Downey Junior as Best Supporting Actor, and I'm gonna
- 8:46Speaker 1: throw in Emily Blunt as Best Supporting Actress, I would
- 8:51Speaker 1: be shocked. All three of them were amazing. I love
- 8:54Speaker 1: the film, and of course Nolan not only directed it,
- 8:57Speaker 1: but he wrote it. That is my recommendation. See that
- 9:00Speaker 1: as far as your Friday nights, can I make another
- 9:02Speaker 1: recommendation for everybody This Friday night, the Detroit Line announced
- 9:08Speaker 1: that they're going to be offering an alternate broadcast of
- 9:10Speaker 1: their first preseason game against the Giants on Friday night.
- 9:14Speaker 1: The main broadcast of course, will be on the Lions
- 9:16Speaker 1: TV Network and the Lions Radio Network, but yours truly
- 9:20Speaker 1: will be hosting the alternate broadcast on Detroit Lions dot
- 9:25Speaker 1: com and the Detroit Lions mobile app. I am so
- 9:29Speaker 1: excited for this. Here's how it's gonna work. I'm basically
- 9:31Speaker 1: Peyton and Eli hosting this thing. And it's a shreger cast,
- 9:35Speaker 1: if you will, for the Detroit Lions. And I'm gonna
- 9:38Speaker 1: have Lions legends and guys who work for the team
- 9:41Speaker 1: now and and other celebrities come on here and there,
- 9:44Speaker 1: and it's gonna be cool. It could be a complete bust,
- 9:47Speaker 1: it could be terrible, but it's an alternate broadcast. We're
- 9:50Speaker 1: trying things. I so appreciate the guys not only at
- 9:52Speaker 1: the Lions, but a company called kiss We and they're
- 9:56Speaker 1: gonna be giving me this opportunity. They called me earlier
- 9:58Speaker 1: this summer say would you be interested in coming on
- 10:01Speaker 1: as a guest or a host. I'm like either one,
- 10:03Speaker 1: let's do it. The guests that we've booked for this thing,
- 10:06Speaker 1: it is a heavy, heavy hitter lineup. I love this.
- 10:09Speaker 1: Brad Holmes, who I think has the most listens of
- 10:13Speaker 1: this podcast. The general manager. He's going to be coming
- 10:15Speaker 1: on and joining me. Chris Pielman, who is the special
- 10:19Speaker 1: assistant to the President and the CEO and chairperson there now,
- 10:22Speaker 1: but Lions legend and was also he was the analyst
- 10:25Speaker 1: when I was a slideline reporter for years for Fox.
- 10:27Speaker 1: Gary Danielson's going to be joining. He's the lead college
- 10:30Speaker 1: football anals for CBS, obviously doing SEC and now Big Ten.
- 10:33Speaker 1: He's a Lions quarterback for nine years. He's coming on.
- 10:36Speaker 1: Glover Quinn, who is a long term safety Golden Tate.
- 10:39Speaker 1: How about Jalen Rose University of Michigan, standout Detroit native,
- 10:44Speaker 1: diehard Lions fan coming on. Here's what I love. Aaron
- 10:47Speaker 1: kirk Gibson's coming on with me. Michigan state legend but
- 10:50Speaker 1: also a Tiger's outfielder for years and was from Pontiac, Michigan,
- 10:54Speaker 1: and all the old Darren McCarty, Red Wings right winger
- 10:58Speaker 1: and four time Stanley Cup champion. I love that we're
- 11:01Speaker 1: getting Darren McCarty on this thing. Dave Briquette, who's the
- 11:04Speaker 1: Lions beat writer for the Detroit Free Pest forever and
- 11:07Speaker 1: as a Pro Football Hall of Famer. My friend Stacy
- 11:09Speaker 1: Dale's NFL Network reporter, and of course we know her
- 11:13Speaker 1: history as a wonderful college basketball player and an All
- 11:16Speaker 1: American and a WNBA player for years. I'm fired up.
- 11:19Speaker 1: So who knows. It's seven o'clock on Detroit Lions dot Com.
- 11:24Speaker 1: It's gonna be a sensation. It's Schragger Cast. It's what
- 11:26Speaker 1: we do. It's basically this with a bunch of guests,
- 11:29Speaker 1: and I'm studying the depth chart for the Lions. I
- 11:32Speaker 1: swear I'm looking at the Lions depth chart. I don't
- 11:34Speaker 1: know a lot of these guys, so there's a lot
- 11:36Speaker 1: of chances for me to sound stupid. But Lions fans,
- 11:40Speaker 1: if you enjoy this kind of banter and you enjoyed
- 11:42Speaker 1: my interview with Brad Holmes, check it out. And if
- 11:44Speaker 1: you're not a Lions fan and you're a Giants fan,
- 11:46Speaker 1: or you're just a fan of this podcast and what
- 11:49Speaker 1: we've got going in this kind of vibe, I would
- 11:51Speaker 1: say check it out. Detroit Lions dot Com the alternate
- 11:54Speaker 1: broadcast of the Giants Lions preseason opener for both teams.
- 11:59Speaker 2: I know it's tough because they don't always not everyone
- 12:02Speaker 2: plays a ton, but do you have any player in
- 12:04Speaker 2: particular on the Lions roster you see on Friday.
- 12:07Speaker 1: I want to see if Gibbs plays, right, that was
- 12:09Speaker 1: the guy that yeah, yeah, that just loved him. Yeah yeah,
- 12:13Speaker 1: Holmes loved him. He's a top fifteen pick.
- 12:16Speaker 4: You know.
- 12:17Speaker 1: Then there's other stories because like I've been doing my
- 12:19Speaker 1: research and I've fallen in love with a wide receiver
- 12:22Speaker 1: who I think my play a lout in the second
- 12:23Speaker 1: half named Dylan Drummond. Drummond story is cool, Aaron, real
- 12:27Speaker 1: quick before we get to our guests here, it is.
- 12:28Speaker 1: You'll like this, all right. Never was all conference in
- 12:31Speaker 1: anything at Eastern Michigan in the MAC. He was like
- 12:36Speaker 1: this under the radar. Guy doesn't get the comm bye,
- 12:39Speaker 1: nothing like draft weekend. He's golfing the entire time, doesn't
- 12:43Speaker 1: even pick up his phones. He knows he's not getting drafted.
- 12:45Speaker 1: He's a wide receiver. But usually when you don't get
- 12:47Speaker 1: drafted and you're a good player in college football, you'll
- 12:50Speaker 1: you'll try to get signed as an undrafted free agent.
- 12:52Speaker 1: Like in the hours after the draft. There's probably like
- 12:53Speaker 1: a couple hundred guys that happens to, where all the
- 12:56Speaker 1: teams are like, all right, we're gonna have ten extra
- 12:57Speaker 1: guys that we signed as undrafted free agents, so we're
- 12:59Speaker 1: going to have him on the roster and they're going
- 13:01Speaker 1: to fight for a spot. He wasn't one of them.
- 13:02Speaker 1: So take the three hundred guys who get drafted, the
- 13:04Speaker 1: two hundred guys who get undrafted free and signings, that's
- 13:07Speaker 1: five hundred guys. He's not one of them. They have
- 13:09Speaker 1: a rookie mini camp tryout in the spring and he
- 13:16Speaker 1: shows up and he's you know, ipsil Ante is where
- 13:18Speaker 1: Eastern Michigan was. He shows up, plays well, three days
- 13:21Speaker 1: and he's about to leave and he's like, I guess
- 13:23Speaker 1: that was that doesn't hear anything, gets a call and
- 13:25Speaker 1: they're like, are you still in the Building's hegether? They're like,
- 13:28Speaker 1: we'd like to sign you to a rookie contract just
- 13:30Speaker 1: to come to training camp. And so Dylan goes and
- 13:33Speaker 1: signs it. And to a man, I'm not trying to
- 13:36Speaker 1: hype him up all too much. I don't even know
- 13:37Speaker 1: if he makes the team, but everyone that I speak
- 13:39Speaker 1: to in Detroit is like, Dylan Drummond is crushing it,
- 13:41Speaker 1: like he is having a great camp. So I am
- 13:44Speaker 1: excited to see that guy, Dylan Drummond jersey number eighty
- 13:48Speaker 1: three for the Detroit Lions. I assure you no other
- 13:51Speaker 1: podcasts and the world is talking about Dylan Drummond right
- 13:55Speaker 1: now in the second week of August. Awesome.
- 13:58Speaker 2: Nice, Well, I'm excited to watch him now.
- 14:00Speaker 1: Yeah, and watch Thedetroit Lions dot Com broadcast. Plenty of
- 14:05Speaker 1: other stuff going on. We'll hit it throughout the next
- 14:08Speaker 1: couple of weeks, but all your teams are on this weekend.
- 14:11Speaker 1: Enjoy it. It also means it's the end of NFL
- 14:14Speaker 1: Network sending people all over to camps and having them
- 14:18Speaker 1: in their polo shirts and the director's chair and interviewing
- 14:21Speaker 1: the players and getting great soundbites. It's been fun. My
- 14:23Speaker 1: funniest video of the week that I loved was Scott
- 14:25Speaker 1: Hansen from NFL Red Zone. Hi Scott Hanson. Here Scott
- 14:30Speaker 1: Hansen going into the Jaguars facilities men's bathroom and being
- 14:35Speaker 1: so impressed by the technology that they have that grades
- 14:40Speaker 1: your hydration. Essentially you deposit yourself Like he was using
- 14:43Speaker 1: crazy words. He was explaining it on this video about
- 14:46Speaker 1: beeing into the urinal and the urinal tells you if
- 14:48Speaker 1: your hydration levels are correct, and he's like, if it's
- 14:51Speaker 1: in the red, you gotta go see a trainer immediately.
- 14:53Speaker 3: You're about to see.
- 14:54Speaker 5: The most advanced urinals in all of professional sports.
- 15:00Speaker 6: Jacksonville Jaguars Headquarters.
- 15:02Speaker 5: All right, that's a censor that will measure your hydration level.
- 15:10Speaker 5: If the light turns green when you go, you're good that.
- 15:15Speaker 5: If it's yellow, you need to high drate some more.
- 15:17Speaker 5: If it's red, you're probably gonna get a notice from
- 15:21Speaker 5: the athletic trainers.
- 15:23Speaker 6: Maybe have an IV.
- 15:26Speaker 1: I'm like NFL Plus has all sorts of stuff, and
- 15:28Speaker 1: I appreciate like analytics programs and and here's a game
- 15:32Speaker 1: preview from this analyst. I might not click on any
- 15:34Speaker 1: of that stuff if you told me there's a Scott
- 15:37Speaker 1: Hansen weekly show where he goes to different NFL facilities
- 15:42Speaker 1: and tries out the bathrooms and just tells us and
- 15:44Speaker 1: does like a review as if he's like Dave Portnoy,
- 15:47Speaker 1: you know, I think Jamie heard all said it great.
- 15:49Speaker 1: She was like, you know, one flush like instead of
- 15:52Speaker 1: one bite, like you know the rest of the rules.
- 15:54Speaker 1: You know, I would be in on it. And then
- 15:56Speaker 1: a twitter you know, person not twot at our show
- 15:59Speaker 1: because we had Hanson talking about this urinal and like
- 16:02Speaker 1: this incredible urinal this second, like this like ai urinal
- 16:05Speaker 1: tells you about a Twitter person you know, hit up
- 16:09Speaker 1: the show and was like it was like, you know,
- 16:11Speaker 1: it's actually not a terrible idea. Hanson in one stall,
- 16:15Speaker 1: a guess in another stall. You just have you know,
- 16:18Speaker 1: the two of these guys with behind closed stall. We
- 16:20Speaker 1: don't see their faces, we hear their voices, we hear
- 16:22Speaker 1: whatever else action they've got going on. And it's a
- 16:24Speaker 1: full interview show. It Scott Hansen from a bathroom in
- 16:26Speaker 1: a facility NFL plus guys, I can't just give these
- 16:29Speaker 1: ideas away for free. There's got to be an apartment
- 16:31Speaker 1: there that's working on these. This is gold, take it
- 16:34Speaker 1: and do what you want with it. And with that
- 16:36Speaker 1: we get to our guest. I really love this dude.
- 16:39Speaker 1: We'll get them on right after this. Our next guest
- 16:58Speaker 1: is the man making the key decisions in the front
- 17:00Speaker 1: office for one of the NFL's best teams over the
- 17:02Speaker 1: last several years. They're a Super Bowl contender year and
- 17:05Speaker 1: year out, and they're a lot of people are taken
- 17:07Speaker 1: this year and right now we are on the eve
- 17:10Speaker 1: of the start of the preseason slate, so it was
- 17:13Speaker 1: a good time as they wrap up their training camp
- 17:15Speaker 1: trip out to Rochester to bring on our guy GM
- 17:19Speaker 1: of the Buffalo Bills, Mister Brandon, Bean Brandon, what's up man?
- 17:22Speaker 3: How you doing? Buddy?
- 17:24Speaker 1: Doing great?
- 17:25Speaker 3: Appreciate you having me all like always, Buddy.
- 17:27Speaker 1: I love having you on. I think you're the first
- 17:29Speaker 1: recurring guest in the history of this podcast. We've had
- 17:33Speaker 1: lots of coaches, lots of coordinators, lots of gms, but
- 17:36Speaker 1: you're the first guy I've ever asked to come back
- 17:38Speaker 1: on because I loved how much fun we had on
- 17:41Speaker 1: the first one, and now you're here for the second one,
- 17:43Speaker 1: and let's dive right in. At this point in training camp,
- 17:47Speaker 1: when it's beyond hey, everybody, let's unpack our bags, when
- 17:49Speaker 1: you're not sleeping in your own bed and you're now
- 17:51Speaker 1: onto week two, is it one of those where it's like, Okay,
- 17:54Speaker 1: we're good, like we're set, let's get the season going.
- 17:57Speaker 1: Or is it you wish he had a couple more
- 17:58Speaker 1: days to kind of work out the kinks.
- 18:00Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean, I enjoy training camp. I enjoyed up
- 18:03Speaker 4: here in Rochester. It's a great setup here Saint John Fisher.
- 18:07Speaker 4: It's you know, every team is its own team. You
- 18:09Speaker 4: have a lot of the same players, but every team
- 18:12Speaker 4: forms its own bond. And uh those teams that bond together.
- 18:16Speaker 4: I go back to the teams that we had success
- 18:18Speaker 4: on in Carolina, the team that we had that made
- 18:21Speaker 4: it to the AFC Championship a couple of years ago. Like,
- 18:23Speaker 4: those guys genuinely loved being around each other. Uh, it's
- 18:28Speaker 4: we all know, it's not always the most talented team.
- 18:30Speaker 4: It's it's the best team because you're gonna have adversity.
- 18:34Speaker 4: Obviously we faced our fair share of that last season.
- 18:36Speaker 4: And and so this is kind of where that bond
- 18:39Speaker 4: really starts.
- 18:39Speaker 3: At camp away, you're just kind of on your own.
- 18:42Speaker 4: You're in drm rooms, you're you're hanging out the cafeteria,
- 18:45Speaker 4: whatever it is. So I enjoy it, but it is
- 18:47Speaker 4: getting to the point where, uh, you know, I know
- 18:50Speaker 4: the guys are starting to get tired of hitting each other,
- 18:52Speaker 4: and so they're ready to hit someone else. And uh
- 18:55Speaker 4: so and plus from my standpoint, I know that the
- 18:58Speaker 4: pass rushers know Dion Dawkins move or Spencer Brown's move
- 19:02Speaker 4: or vice versa.
- 19:03Speaker 3: Let me see them get some you know, some fresh
- 19:05Speaker 3: meet and how how they you? You know from that standpoint, Yeah.
- 19:08Speaker 1: You guys are one of the few teams left that
- 19:10Speaker 1: actually travels for training camp. Obviously the Cowboys and we
- 19:13Speaker 1: can name a few. The advantage of going to like
- 19:15Speaker 1: a college campus and being Josh Allen and von Miller
- 19:20Speaker 1: needs to be in dorms for two weeks. Like the
- 19:21Speaker 1: advantage of that though, give me the give me the
- 19:23Speaker 1: plus four it because I remember covering the Giants when
- 19:25Speaker 1: all the big fellows are argue just it was over.
- 19:28Speaker 1: It's all Beny, the beds are too small, and they're like,
- 19:30Speaker 1: this is just We're just we're veterans making millions of dollars.
- 19:32Speaker 1: What are we doing? What are these What are the
- 19:35Speaker 1: advantages of going off campus and off site and really
- 19:37Speaker 1: having that bonding experience.
- 19:39Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean I think our football ops, guys, Brendan
- 19:42Speaker 4: Rugs are DFO. I think they do a great job
- 19:45Speaker 4: of getting bigger beds in here they find so the
- 19:48Speaker 4: guys aren't sleeping in true dorm beds like you think
- 19:52Speaker 4: eat his dorm rooms. So we're not at the ritz
- 19:55Speaker 4: Carlton by any means. But it's not a long stretch
- 19:58Speaker 4: and I just think, like I said earlier, the bonding
- 20:01Speaker 4: having to just you know, no one's trying to rush home.
- 20:05Speaker 4: No one's wife's all or girlfriend or whatever. Hey, we
- 20:08Speaker 4: got to get home. You got to do this. It
- 20:10Speaker 4: just to me, it takes the pressure off of everyone.
- 20:12Speaker 4: Your singular focus is football here for a couple of weeks,
- 20:16Speaker 4: and then then you kind of return to some normalcy
- 20:19Speaker 4: and again building that bond. You know, Sean and I
- 20:22Speaker 4: both believe it's just super important for the long stretch
- 20:25Speaker 4: that you know, of the season of seventeen games.
- 20:28Speaker 1: I would imagine the star players don't have roommates or
- 20:31Speaker 1: do they.
- 20:31Speaker 3: No, they don't.
- 20:33Speaker 4: You know, we we bunked some of the young guys,
- 20:36Speaker 4: but no, none of the guys.
- 20:39Speaker 1: Josh Allen is not like.
- 20:43Speaker 4: Micah and Jordan there. They got their own room, so
- 20:46Speaker 4: they're they're in good shape from that stamp.
- 20:49Speaker 1: Yeah, you mentioned last year at the end, like the adversity.
- 20:53Speaker 1: I've gotten through it a million times on our show.
- 20:55Speaker 1: I've talked about our pocket like there was there you
- 20:57Speaker 1: understandably nothing left in the tank by the end. No,
- 20:59Speaker 1: it's not an excuse. It's just no team I can
- 21:02Speaker 1: remember in recent years has gone through a two month
- 21:04Speaker 1: span with all the weather stuf, and then tomorrow and
- 21:07Speaker 1: just straight through to the end of the season where
- 21:09Speaker 1: it's like, God, they've gone through a lot. Do you
- 21:12Speaker 1: feel like the team is refreshed or is there a
- 21:14Speaker 1: hangover from all that where you like can kind of
- 21:17Speaker 1: sense that, you know, the stink of the end of
- 21:19Speaker 1: last year. And I don't mean to say stink, but
- 21:21Speaker 1: you know what I mean. Yea, it is still with
- 21:23Speaker 1: this team as we had to twenty twenty three.
- 21:25Speaker 4: No, I think you know, as I said, every teams
- 21:28Speaker 4: a new team, and it's our job to learn from
- 21:31Speaker 4: what Yes, there was adversity, there was things that come up,
- 21:34Speaker 4: but it's what you do with it and how you
- 21:37Speaker 4: take that and the scars of not winning. You know
- 21:41Speaker 4: that trophy that the Chiefs, you know won again last season.
- 21:44Speaker 4: It's it's it's what you do with it, learn from
- 21:47Speaker 4: the mistakes, things we could have done better. Yes, there
- 21:49Speaker 4: was adversity, but there's things we could have handled ourselves
- 21:52Speaker 4: and we know that. And so this is a fresh group,
- 21:55Speaker 4: a new team, and so we got a fresh outlook.
- 21:57Speaker 3: Everyone's looking ahead to this season and.
- 22:01Speaker 4: Trying to make sure that we don't repeat, you know
- 22:04Speaker 4: the mistakes that ultimately cost us, you know, a chance
- 22:07Speaker 4: of the Super Bowl.
- 22:08Speaker 1: When we had you on last time. You took us
- 22:10Speaker 1: step by step through the drafting of Josh Allen and
- 22:13Speaker 1: how convicted you guys were, and we're gonna make this move.
- 22:16Speaker 1: We're gonna get this guy. We're gonna do it. And
- 22:18Speaker 1: we found our guy, Dalton Kincaid. Everywhere I looked in
- 22:23Speaker 1: the mock drafts, everyone I talked to you said, Okay, look,
- 22:26Speaker 1: Kincaid and probably Myers, the Notre Dame kid, they're probably
- 22:30Speaker 1: gonna go in the top twenty. And then after that
- 22:32Speaker 1: there might be a Darnell Washington, there might be other guys,
- 22:35Speaker 1: but tight end position is really good up top with
- 22:37Speaker 1: these two guys. You're sitting there in the mid twenties
- 22:40Speaker 1: at the end of the first round and there's Dalton Kincaid.
- 22:42Speaker 1: Can you take us through the drafting of Dalton Kincaid
- 22:45Speaker 1: from your perspective And did you ever think in a
- 22:47Speaker 1: million years you guys would have the opportunity to draft
- 22:49Speaker 1: that guy at a Utah.
- 22:50Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, we really liked Dalton a lot. We
- 22:52Speaker 3: tried not to get it out there.
- 22:55Speaker 4: We tried to keep our cards close to the vest,
- 22:57Speaker 4: and you know, you do pay attention to macks for
- 23:01Speaker 4: a lot of reasons, one to kind of prepare who
- 23:03Speaker 4: you think is gonna be.
- 23:04Speaker 3: They're not that they're gonna have every team.
- 23:06Speaker 4: But if again, if you're looking at thirty mocks and
- 23:09Speaker 4: every single one of them has a you know, Will
- 23:11Speaker 4: Anderson going before you pick, you don't really you know,
- 23:15Speaker 4: need to go too deep. It's usually pretty accurate. And
- 23:17Speaker 4: so you know, no one really was projecting Dalton. Does
- 23:22Speaker 4: people you know, have some guards, people had some receivers,
- 23:27Speaker 4: you know, And so it was kind of I felt
- 23:29Speaker 4: like we laid under the radar there from that standpoint.
- 23:32Speaker 4: And again probably ten days, two weeks somewhere in there,
- 23:35Speaker 4: I don't remember. I was, you know, you're kind of we're,
- 23:38Speaker 4: you know, our board, we're wrapping it up, and you're
- 23:40Speaker 4: looking at them, looking to see who's on our board
- 23:42Speaker 4: that we like and versus what people think is going
- 23:45Speaker 4: to be there.
- 23:46Speaker 3: And I thought ten days out, I was like, we
- 23:48Speaker 3: got a good chance at Dalton. I really did.
- 23:50Speaker 4: But but then as I'm starting to do my homework
- 23:53Speaker 4: and things were running close, so I'm starting to hear
- 23:55Speaker 4: Dalton going in the teens and he's not going to
- 23:58Speaker 4: get past this team and you know, barely past twenty
- 24:02Speaker 4: and so at that point you're you're making, you know,
- 24:06Speaker 4: alternative plans if he doesn't get to you, you know,
- 24:10Speaker 4: whether you trade back or could someone else that you
- 24:12Speaker 4: like be there. And so ultimately, you know, I had
- 24:15Speaker 4: told you know, our ownership, you know, and Terry Bogula said,
- 24:19Speaker 4: you know, if he gets close, I may get a
- 24:21Speaker 4: little aggressive here to try and get him. And ultimately
- 24:25Speaker 4: we were able to move up a couple of spots
- 24:26Speaker 4: and get him.
- 24:27Speaker 1: What were the machinations of that trade? Because I remember
- 24:30Speaker 1: with Giants, Jacksonville, the Ravens, there's all these teams. Are
- 24:33Speaker 1: you on the phone calling you know, all of them
- 24:35Speaker 1: and saying, let's trade for the pick? Or is it
- 24:37Speaker 1: one of these where they call you and said do
- 24:38Speaker 1: you want to trade back?
- 24:39Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 24:40Speaker 4: I mean the day of the draft, you know, I
- 24:43Speaker 4: had guys checking around, but I had you know, Jacksonville
- 24:47Speaker 4: was one of the teams that said they might be
- 24:49Speaker 4: open to move back.
- 24:53Speaker 3: The Giants.
- 24:54Speaker 4: You know, I talked to Joe and he said, you know,
- 24:57Speaker 4: he thought they might be willing to move back.
- 24:59Speaker 3: And I said, listen.
- 25:00Speaker 4: I again, by that day, I didn't think he would
- 25:03Speaker 4: be there.
- 25:03Speaker 3: I said, honestly, I think we're probably going back with
- 25:06Speaker 3: you know, and not going up.
- 25:08Speaker 4: That was my you know, truthful feeling if I, if
- 25:11Speaker 4: I was putting odds in Vegas that I would go back.
- 25:15Speaker 4: But then it got you know, when he got past
- 25:18Speaker 4: like twenty one, you know, or so I was like, man,
- 25:21Speaker 4: we got a chance here.
- 25:23Speaker 1: And the run of wide receivers was starting.
- 25:24Speaker 4: It was starting, and so I called Joe and said, hey,
- 25:29Speaker 4: what do you think We'd already nailed down what it
- 25:31Speaker 4: would be so we didn't.
- 25:32Speaker 1: Have to argue beforehand. You're like, it's hypothetically, this.
- 25:36Speaker 3: Is what we're going to do. That way, we don't
- 25:38Speaker 3: have to argue about it. You're an agreement. I'm in agreement.
- 25:40Speaker 4: And he's like, well, listen, I'll do it if if
- 25:44Speaker 4: if our guy's gone or whatever. And so I'm like,
- 25:47Speaker 4: all right, well, then next thing I know, he texts me.
- 25:52Speaker 4: He goes we're moving up and he's Jackson just gotten
- 25:56Speaker 4: on the clock.
- 25:57Speaker 3: You're like what.
- 25:58Speaker 4: So before it was announced publicly, I started calling Trent
- 26:03Speaker 4: Balky and saying, you know, ultimately, you know, trimp I
- 26:10Speaker 4: know you're trading here.
- 26:11Speaker 3: What what will you? You know? What can we do?
- 26:14Speaker 3: And he he didn't want to trade the pick.
- 26:17Speaker 4: I really didn't, but Joe and then made their pick
- 26:21Speaker 4: and then he said, I'll call you back. And so
- 26:23Speaker 4: it went back and forth several calls, and he basically
- 26:25Speaker 4: made me tell him who we.
- 26:27Speaker 1: Were going to pick, and you had to be honest
- 26:29Speaker 1: and I had.
- 26:29Speaker 4: To shoot him straight and I would never lie in
- 26:32Speaker 4: that standpoint, from a trust standpoint, and he was nervous
- 26:35Speaker 4: about it, but he was willing to do it, and
- 26:38Speaker 4: he still got the tackle they wanted and we got done.
- 26:41Speaker 1: It's so fun. And I know I'm on the media
- 26:44Speaker 1: side and the fans listening are like, but it is
- 26:47Speaker 1: as simple as that, as Hey, you and Joe are like,
- 26:50Speaker 1: there's a chance this might happen. We've got three days
- 26:52Speaker 1: here before the draft. We're killing time. Let's work out
- 26:54Speaker 1: the deal now, as opposed to doing it on the clock.
- 26:56Speaker 1: And then he has to text you and be like,
- 26:57Speaker 1: we're actually moving up. We like bangs out of Maryland.
- 26:59Speaker 1: We're taking him. And you're like, ah, all right, It's
- 27:01Speaker 1: it's got to be such a pressure cooker to be
- 27:03Speaker 1: there and then you only get one first round pick
- 27:05Speaker 1: of year, so you don't want to mess up, and
- 27:07Speaker 1: you don't want to get it wrong, and you don't
- 27:08Speaker 1: want to regret not getting the guy and have to
- 27:10Speaker 1: think after you guys get Dalton Kincaid, who put up
- 27:12Speaker 1: huge numbers at Utah. You guys were absolutely thrilled.
- 27:15Speaker 3: Yeah, we were.
- 27:16Speaker 4: You know, we really liked him through the process and
- 27:19Speaker 4: just thought he'd be a great fit for here.
- 27:20Speaker 3: And and you know, he's.
- 27:22Speaker 4: A smart kid, he's still an up and commoner and
- 27:25Speaker 4: just you know, pairing him with Dawson Knox, you know,
- 27:28Speaker 4: we thought could give us another added dimension that teams
- 27:32Speaker 4: have to defend.
- 27:33Speaker 3: You know, we don't. We don't. We haven't used twelve
- 27:35Speaker 3: person al a lot.
- 27:36Speaker 4: So this gave us a chance to add that to
- 27:38Speaker 4: Ken Dorsey's you know, kind of his playbook.
- 27:41Speaker 1: Yeah, you're not going anywhere. You and Sean both are
- 27:43Speaker 1: pretty secure in that market, and you have this team together.
- 27:48Speaker 1: The stability of both the two of you guys together.
- 27:51Speaker 1: When you speak to your team and when you address
- 27:54Speaker 1: the the younger guys and maybe some of the veterans,
- 27:57Speaker 1: and they know that you're not going anywhere. How important
- 28:00Speaker 1: is that for you guys to come and know that, hey,
- 28:02Speaker 1: year to year, there's some consistency here. We're building something.
- 28:04Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean it's I tell you when when I
- 28:07Speaker 4: interviewed for the job, you know, Sean was already there.
- 28:10Speaker 3: I'm interviewing with the Beagoulas.
- 28:13Speaker 4: And you know, so I'm talking to Terry and Kim
- 28:15Speaker 4: getting to know him, and one of the things I
- 28:17Speaker 4: brought up was stability. You know, I said, you know,
- 28:20Speaker 4: I felt like the AFC East teams were doing Bill
- 28:23Speaker 4: Belichick a favor by constantly turned over.
- 28:26Speaker 3: I said, you know, it's two things.
- 28:27Speaker 4: One, you haven't found a quarterback this organization since Jim Kelly.
- 28:32Speaker 4: So first and foremost, we have to start that plan,
- 28:35Speaker 4: you know, if you're going to hire me, And then
- 28:37Speaker 4: I want to know, like Kim, we this is the plan.
- 28:40Speaker 4: This is not an overnight thing. You know, as I
- 28:43Speaker 4: begin to work with Sean and we share ideas, you know,
- 28:46Speaker 4: if you're going to hire me to start working with Sean,
- 28:49Speaker 4: you know, I think we see things pretty similarly. From
- 28:52Speaker 4: from what I know about Sean. We haven't gotten deep
- 28:55Speaker 4: into the weeds. I had to get the job first.
- 28:57Speaker 4: But you know, they said, well, we gave Sean a
- 29:01Speaker 4: five year deal and we would do the same for
- 29:03Speaker 4: whoever gets this gym job. And I said, and I
- 29:05Speaker 4: hope you'll us, you know, play that out, And they said, no,
- 29:10Speaker 4: we you know, there has been a little turnover here,
- 29:13Speaker 4: but we want to be one of the franchises that's
- 29:15Speaker 4: looked at as not quick trigger, not just reacting to
- 29:19Speaker 4: you know, to media pressure, fan pressure, but doing the
- 29:23Speaker 4: right thing. And I tell you they've they've been great.
- 29:25Speaker 4: And you know, Sean and I both are very fortunate
- 29:28Speaker 4: to work for them, and they they're involved, but and
- 29:33Speaker 4: they want to know and they're doing everything that owners
- 29:35Speaker 4: should do. But they're also giving us the resources to
- 29:39Speaker 4: run the team and and and do the best we can.
- 29:42Speaker 4: And now it's on us to see if we can somehow,
- 29:45Speaker 4: you know, get this trophy finally to Buffalo here at
- 29:47Speaker 4: some point.
- 29:48Speaker 1: Yeah, and those fans want it. AFC East is interesting
- 29:52Speaker 1: because for years I felt like it was just the Patriots,
- 29:54Speaker 1: and then now it's like your time. The Bills are
- 29:56Speaker 1: the team. Dolphins had a great season last year. Obviously,
- 30:00Speaker 1: you guys beat them in the playoffs. At the end
- 30:02Speaker 1: this pass offseason, the Jets loaded up. They're obviously going
- 30:05Speaker 1: to be a factor. The Patriot rates are still looming.
- 30:07Speaker 1: You look at this gauntlet and then your schedule, which
- 30:10Speaker 1: is also the NFC East. Is the AFC East as
- 30:12Speaker 1: good as it's been since you've gotten there. Do you
- 30:14Speaker 1: feel that way or is it like hell, no, we're
- 30:16Speaker 1: the team and they can come and try to get
- 30:17Speaker 1: the crown, like we don't care about what they did.
- 30:20Speaker 3: Yeah. I think it's from top to bottom.
- 30:22Speaker 4: It's as competitive as as you know, I can remember
- 30:26Speaker 4: it even back when I was in the NFC. Just
- 30:29Speaker 4: the Patriots dominated for so long, and so I think
- 30:32Speaker 4: everyone knew, you know, we got to, you know, make
- 30:36Speaker 4: make bold moves.
- 30:36Speaker 3: And I think all teams have done it.
- 30:39Speaker 4: Yes, Miami, you know, unfortunately too was out for them,
- 30:42Speaker 4: and they're you know.
- 30:43Speaker 3: Playing Skylar Thompson, rookie quarterback. The kid played a heck
- 30:47Speaker 3: of the.
- 30:47Speaker 1: Game played well against you guys.
- 30:49Speaker 4: Really the game was in the balance well into the
- 30:52Speaker 4: fourth quarter for US holding on and so you know,
- 30:56Speaker 4: obviously we lose.
- 30:57Speaker 3: Next week the Jets. The Jets beat us there.
- 31:00Speaker 4: It was a tight game here, you know, and now
- 31:03Speaker 4: you add an MVP guy and Aaron Rodgers just that
- 31:05Speaker 4: move along, I get it why people are picking them
- 31:09Speaker 4: to be in the Super Bowl, like it's fair. And again,
- 31:12Speaker 4: the Dolphins with Tua back, are going to be They
- 31:14Speaker 4: beat us down there with Tua, and we had a
- 31:17Speaker 4: tight game that we won, uh in Buffalo's, so I
- 31:20Speaker 4: expected to be a dogfight New England.
- 31:22Speaker 3: You know Bill Belichick, greatest coach of all time.
- 31:26Speaker 4: You had Bill O'Brien who's had a lot of great
- 31:28Speaker 4: offensive success, you know, down Obama, but in Houston and
- 31:33Speaker 4: in New England. So I don't know if there's a
- 31:36Speaker 4: tougher division. Maybe someone would argue maybe the NFC North
- 31:40Speaker 4: or something.
- 31:40Speaker 1: But yeah, maybe NFC North might be more more contested,
- 31:45Speaker 1: I would say, But as far as strength of team,
- 31:48Speaker 1: I think it's a FC North and a FC East
- 31:50Speaker 1: this year in my view.
- 31:51Speaker 3: That's that's that's the way I see it.
- 31:53Speaker 4: And again you're you're right, we're also playing, uh, the
- 31:55Speaker 4: NFC East and the Eagles. They're a tough team. The
- 31:59Speaker 4: Giants had a heck of a run. Dablon Joe done
- 32:01Speaker 4: a heck of a job there, cow Balls really good.
- 32:05Speaker 1: And then your boy Ron, Yeah.
- 32:06Speaker 4: You know, I think Marty and Ron have done a
- 32:09Speaker 4: heck of a job that team. You know, if you
- 32:11Speaker 4: just look at their you just look at their but
- 32:12Speaker 4: they've got to figure out is Sam how the guy?
- 32:15Speaker 3: Yeah, I know that's what they got to prove.
- 32:17Speaker 4: We we liked him as well, but you know that's
- 32:20Speaker 4: going to be a contested division, you know in the
- 32:22Speaker 4: NFC East.
- 32:23Speaker 1: A couple of questions quickly and then I want to
- 32:25Speaker 1: have some rapid fire stuff about you personally. But uh,
- 32:28Speaker 1: the von Miller like time is that does every day?
- 32:31Speaker 1: I haven't been following you guys on a dayt dabasis
- 32:33Speaker 1: are the locals asking you that every single day and
- 32:35Speaker 1: asking Sean like, what's the latest of vonn When's he
- 32:37Speaker 1: gonna be ready? Or is it pretty established in your
- 32:39Speaker 1: building that he's going to be good to go? And
- 32:41Speaker 1: he's good to go?
- 32:42Speaker 4: Yeah, I think we're just you know, we're definitely having
- 32:45Speaker 4: conversations not every day with vond but every week checking in.
- 32:48Speaker 4: He's doing his daily stuff with you know, our medical
- 32:50Speaker 4: team and rehab, and he's in a great spot mentally.
- 32:54Speaker 4: He's been through an ACO before, so he knows the process.
- 32:58Speaker 4: It's more than just the physical rehabit's the it's the
- 33:01Speaker 4: mental part of it.
- 33:02Speaker 3: Too, And so.
- 33:04Speaker 4: You know, we're not saying whether he could play Week
- 33:07Speaker 4: one or not not out of the question.
- 33:10Speaker 3: You know, I would you know right now, probably coin
- 33:12Speaker 3: toss is probably the best way he could.
- 33:14Speaker 1: I think you would sign up for that a couple
- 33:15Speaker 1: of weeks ago.
- 33:16Speaker 4: Right, Yeah, I know Vaughn wants to play in it.
- 33:19Speaker 4: You know, he's still got to be clear. Doctor Cooper
- 33:21Speaker 4: out in Texas did his surgery, so he still got
- 33:23Speaker 4: to get final clearance there, and so we'll just we'll
- 33:27Speaker 4: take it slow with him. We've tried to beef up
- 33:30Speaker 4: around in case he's not ready to handle that.
- 33:33Speaker 3: But we'll probably know a little closer to the season.
- 33:35Speaker 1: Running back room is interesting. Obviously Singletary was there for years,
- 33:39Speaker 1: not there now. Around the league that was such a conversation,
- 33:42Speaker 1: And there are teams like the forty nine ers who
- 33:44Speaker 1: have Christian McCaffrey, who you know very well and is
- 33:47Speaker 1: an outstanding player and gets a lot of paid money,
- 33:50Speaker 1: and Derrick Henry and even Saquon for his one year
- 33:52Speaker 1: deal is making ten million dollars. You guys have a
- 33:54Speaker 1: different strategy with it, or you have at least I
- 33:57Speaker 1: don't know if it's by design or not, but it
- 33:58Speaker 1: doesn't seem like there's a lead dog in that room.
- 34:00Speaker 1: Obviously Cook and now you got Harris from the Bill
- 34:03Speaker 1: from the Patriots. But is that a philosophical thing or
- 34:05Speaker 1: is this one of those where, hey, we'd love to
- 34:07Speaker 1: see James Cook run for eighteen hundred yards and we'd
- 34:09Speaker 1: pay him the same way or is that just how
- 34:11Speaker 1: your team is built. We're going to focus on different
- 34:13Speaker 1: positions and the running back spot is going to be
- 34:15Speaker 1: kind of a committee deal.
- 34:16Speaker 3: Yeah. I mean, listen, you always want the best players.
- 34:18Speaker 4: I mean, you're not going to turn down I was
- 34:20Speaker 4: there in Carolina we drafted Christian McCaffrey, so a heck
- 34:23Speaker 4: of a talent. You know, great move by San Francisco
- 34:26Speaker 4: kind of helped turn their season around last year. So
- 34:30Speaker 4: you're always looking to add good players like that no
- 34:32Speaker 4: matter what position.
- 34:34Speaker 3: But it is you do have to pick and choose.
- 34:38Speaker 4: You know, when you're picking at the bottom of the round,
- 34:40Speaker 4: you know your cap constraints. You're paying a quarterback. You've
- 34:43Speaker 4: got to pick some areas where you know what we'll
- 34:46Speaker 4: go with, you know, a less expensive model, whether it's
- 34:50Speaker 4: draft capital or you know, signing. You know, a veteran,
- 34:55Speaker 4: you know for you know, a reasonable price. And so
- 34:59Speaker 4: we liked how James Cook played last year, especially down
- 35:01Speaker 4: the stretch. Thought he did some really good things. And
- 35:04Speaker 4: Damian Harris has had some really good moment matter of
- 35:07Speaker 4: fact against.
- 35:08Speaker 1: Us, he said, well against you guys best.
- 35:10Speaker 4: Games, So at least I don't have to worry about that.
- 35:13Speaker 4: But hopefully he'll do that for us. And so he
- 35:15Speaker 4: just had some health hiccups along the way. That's probably
- 35:18Speaker 4: been his biggest issue, not how he plays. And Latavius
- 35:22Speaker 4: Murray had a really good year last year. We brought
- 35:24Speaker 4: him in born and raised in Syracuse, plays in Florida,
- 35:28Speaker 4: but he grew up a Bills fan, so it's been
- 35:30Speaker 4: fun to have him here a big time leader. And
- 35:32Speaker 4: we lost Nim Hines unfortunately, but we feel like we're
- 35:35Speaker 4: in good hands with these guys and we'll kind of
- 35:37Speaker 4: see how it goes.
- 35:38Speaker 1: You know, Latavius, our show has been on since twenty
- 35:41Speaker 1: sixteen when he was on The Raiders. Latavius used to
- 35:43Speaker 1: come on our show and he had such a good
- 35:45Speaker 1: time on our show. He was in New York and
- 35:46Speaker 1: asked can I come on? And he said, well, actually,
- 35:49Speaker 1: Nate Burleson's out, do you want to host, and so
- 35:51Speaker 1: twenty sixteen version of Latavius Murray was a host on
- 35:54Speaker 1: our show. We had a blast, he had thoughts, he
- 35:56Speaker 1: had takes. Sure Enough, here we are seven years later,
- 35:58Speaker 1: he's on another team, and I would imagine he's going
- 36:01Speaker 1: to make the squad and he's still make an impact.
- 36:03Speaker 3: That's funny. I told him.
- 36:04Speaker 4: It was like, I thought your film was even better
- 36:06Speaker 4: last year and pore he talked about some training methods
- 36:09Speaker 4: he did.
- 36:09Speaker 3: I thought he really started on New Orleans practice squad.
- 36:13Speaker 4: They play him in a game, then Denver plucks him
- 36:15Speaker 4: and he's a big time leader. He's a big, old
- 36:18Speaker 4: school heavy body back, you know, I think a good
- 36:22Speaker 4: compliment to you know, to the other guys we.
- 36:24Speaker 3: Have in the room.
- 36:25Speaker 1: The Dig stuff, was that all just you know, people
- 36:28Speaker 1: trying to fill headlines or is everything? I mean, you
- 36:31Speaker 1: know what I'm talking about When he was tweeting and
- 36:33Speaker 1: I can't even follow it, to be honest, because I'm
- 36:34Speaker 1: just like, that's a wide receiver. Stefan Dig's a great guy,
- 36:36Speaker 1: great teammate. I'm not going to get caught up with this.
- 36:38Speaker 1: But then there was rumors that he wants out and
- 36:40Speaker 1: the Giants were interested. I don't even you tell me.
- 36:43Speaker 1: Are we all good with Stefan Diggs as we head
- 36:45Speaker 1: towards twenty twenty three.
- 36:46Speaker 4: Yeah, we're We're in a great I think STEP's in
- 36:49Speaker 4: a great spot. We're in a great spot. I think
- 36:50Speaker 4: sometimes you just you know, season's end end abruptly, and
- 36:55Speaker 4: when you work as hard as he or others on
- 36:58Speaker 4: this team do, and you come up short, like we
- 36:59Speaker 4: did last season, you leave frustrated. You don't get to
- 37:02Speaker 4: come back for a week and hang out and talk
- 37:04Speaker 4: about how it finished or whatever. Everybody kind of go
- 37:06Speaker 4: is their merry ways. So like anything, there can be
- 37:09Speaker 4: a lot of smoke in the off season and people
- 37:11Speaker 4: are looking for headlines. But you know, we felt like
- 37:13Speaker 4: once we kind of all sat down and shared where
- 37:16Speaker 4: we where we can get better, where we see things,
- 37:18Speaker 4: and how we're going, that we we would all get
- 37:21Speaker 4: on the same page. And I think that's that's what happened.
- 37:23Speaker 4: And Steph's had a great camp. It's been really good.
- 37:26Speaker 4: Him and Josh have you know, picked up right where
- 37:29Speaker 4: they've generally left off. And so no, we don't.
- 37:33Speaker 3: I don't. I don't see anything.
- 37:34Speaker 4: I think it's more I think it's more for the
- 37:36Speaker 4: outside noise than than what actually goes.
- 37:38Speaker 1: You know, there are certain morning TV shows that need
- 37:40Speaker 1: to fill three hours every day in June Brandon, so.
- 37:45Speaker 3: Turn around. But now it's been good. It's been good
- 37:48Speaker 3: to have step back in here.
- 37:49Speaker 1: All right, quick stuff about you, because I love this.
- 37:51Speaker 1: If I lived in Buffalo, I think I would weigh
- 37:53Speaker 1: six hundred pounds. And I say that just because of
- 37:56Speaker 1: the food and how good it is and the wings.
- 37:58Speaker 1: And when I came up in the in the winter
- 38:01Speaker 1: for a game, you and I got together. We went
- 38:03Speaker 1: to a spot and even remember what it was called.
- 38:05Speaker 1: We had some wings. It was fine. But then when
- 38:07Speaker 1: I said the place that we were going there, every
- 38:09Speaker 1: single person I spoke to was like, no, you gotta
- 38:10Speaker 1: go to this one. You gotta go to this one,
- 38:11Speaker 1: you gotta go to this one. Are you a wings guy?
- 38:13Speaker 1: To that point? Because you're an incredible shape and so
- 38:15Speaker 1: is Sean McDermott. And I'm wondering, how do these guys
- 38:17Speaker 1: resist being just five hundred pounds and being slobs eating
- 38:20Speaker 1: wings every night?
- 38:21Speaker 4: Well mcdermot's in a lot better shape than I am.
- 38:23Speaker 4: I'm trending the wrong way fast, just trying to tread water.
- 38:28Speaker 3: Just ask my kids. They tell me I'm fat. I
- 38:30Speaker 3: am all the time.
- 38:32Speaker 1: That term treading water is basically my August diet. Just
- 38:36Speaker 1: treaded water. Put me through it.
- 38:38Speaker 4: Man, It's it's fun. But now it's I do like wings.
- 38:43Speaker 4: I am particular.
- 38:44Speaker 1: You got a spot.
- 38:45Speaker 3: There's some good spots, but bar Bill is my spot.
- 38:48Speaker 1: Everyone says this, as there's one in Rochester too. I
- 38:50Speaker 1: think I've been tested, I've been tweeted. All right, they
- 38:52Speaker 1: just opened it, all right, commercial for barb Bill. Tell
- 38:54Speaker 1: me why it's the good. It's the best wings. Do
- 38:56Speaker 1: you go straight barbecue or buffalo or do you have
- 38:58Speaker 1: like one of these crazy like honey terry, Yucky Malibu blaze,
- 39:02Speaker 1: Like I don't do that stuff.
- 39:03Speaker 3: Cajun honey butter barbecue.
- 39:05Speaker 1: Cajun honey butter barbecue. My mouth is watering. That sounds incredible.
- 39:10Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 39:10Speaker 4: Uh. They also have just regular honey butter barbecue if
- 39:13Speaker 4: you don't like. My wife likes those because she doesn't
- 39:16Speaker 4: like the spice to it.
- 39:17Speaker 3: But either one's great. I generally like the.
- 39:19Speaker 4: Little kick to mine. But they got a great Lagger
- 39:23Speaker 4: beer as well. It's just it's a great place.
- 39:26Speaker 1: But the wings are Is it crispy wing or is
- 39:28Speaker 1: it like a smothered in saucewan. I don't like a
- 39:30Speaker 1: crispy like crunch. I like a smothered in sauce wings.
- 39:34Speaker 3: More smothered in sauce.
- 39:36Speaker 1: Okay.
- 39:36Speaker 4: And it's just it's hard to say. They literally like
- 39:39Speaker 4: brush brush it on. It's just it's truly is.
- 39:43Speaker 1: Is like you're going there tonight. I can tell them
- 39:44Speaker 1: by the way we're talking. I think you like that
- 39:46Speaker 1: lust in your eyes thinking about it.
- 39:48Speaker 4: You're trying to to start thinking about me salivating here.
- 39:51Speaker 3: In a minute. Uh.
- 39:53Speaker 1: Okay, Your your journey, which I've talked about before, is
- 39:56Speaker 1: amazing because you didn't start off being a general manager
- 39:58Speaker 1: in the NFL. You actually took a different route real
- 40:01Speaker 1: quick for the listeners, the public relation side of the
- 40:05Speaker 1: Carolina Panthers and how you made the jump because we
- 40:09Speaker 1: had Brad Holmes on earlier this summer and he told
- 40:12Speaker 1: us his story and I was so inspired by it,
- 40:13Speaker 1: same kind of thing PR of the Saint Louis Rams
- 40:17Speaker 1: and made the jump from PR to the scouting department.
- 40:19Speaker 1: Did your path if you don't mind in as long
- 40:23Speaker 1: as you want to take honest honestly. But you get
- 40:25Speaker 1: in there from the PR side, and then where do
- 40:26Speaker 1: you go from there?
- 40:27Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 40:27Speaker 4: I did six weeks for PR, basically a training camp
- 40:30Speaker 4: that was back when training camp was six weeks.
- 40:32Speaker 3: We got there.
- 40:33Speaker 1: Where was it was it in Carolina?
- 40:34Speaker 3: It was in Carolinas. Yeah, we were Wafford College, Spartan Burks
- 40:37Speaker 3: out Wawford. Yeah.
- 40:39Speaker 4: So it was there through the whole preseason and then
- 40:44Speaker 4: and then moved over to football Ops for the season.
- 40:46Speaker 3: I was kind of doing a little bit of player development.
- 40:48Speaker 4: I was helping the equipment guys, like I was folding tiles,
- 40:51Speaker 4: helping a practice. And then halfway through the season they
- 40:54Speaker 4: started traveling me on the road to help the equipment guys.
- 40:56Speaker 4: I'm holding rain jackets and things for the guys that
- 41:00Speaker 4: rub their cleats all and like whatever need to be done.
- 41:02Speaker 4: You just it's all hands on deck. And then after
- 41:04Speaker 4: that season they hired me full time as a football
- 41:07Speaker 4: ops assistant, you know, helping set up training camp, lining
- 41:11Speaker 4: up travel, picking guys up at the airport, taking them
- 41:14Speaker 4: for physicals.
- 41:15Speaker 1: Who is your most notable pick up at the airport
- 41:17Speaker 1: when like a big name free agent came in, Do
- 41:19Speaker 1: you have a good story.
- 41:20Speaker 3: Oh yeah, I had the funniest visit ever. I had
- 41:24Speaker 3: a few. But we brought in on the same day
- 41:27Speaker 3: Charles Haley and Nate Newton.
- 41:30Speaker 1: Carolina.
- 41:31Speaker 3: I don't remember this to Carolina. So Charles Haley did
- 41:34Speaker 3: not sign. I think he ended up signing Detroit, but
- 41:36Speaker 3: we signed Nate Newton. That was his last year.
- 41:39Speaker 1: Okay, So they both get off the same flight from Dallas,
- 41:42Speaker 1: like where are they?
- 41:43Speaker 4: They were not on the same flight, but they knew
- 41:45Speaker 4: each other. But they Oh, they obviously knew each other.
- 41:49Speaker 4: If you had like one of those cameras in a van.
- 41:52Speaker 4: I can't repeat all what was said.
- 41:55Speaker 3: Uh, there was.
- 41:56Speaker 4: There was a lot of stuff, but it was We
- 41:59Speaker 4: had a lot of laughs.
- 42:00Speaker 3: And uh it was.
- 42:01Speaker 4: Cool because as a kid, I'm watching these guys grow
- 42:04Speaker 4: up fresh out of college and I'm taking a for
- 42:06Speaker 4: a physical and.
- 42:07Speaker 3: They're busting each other's chops.
- 42:09Speaker 4: They're telling stories again because they were back together, and
- 42:13Speaker 4: I spent an evening, you know, getting them to the
- 42:15Speaker 4: hotel and I picked them up at like six thirty
- 42:18Speaker 4: in the morning, take them for the physical, they meet
- 42:20Speaker 4: the coach, then I take them for lunch, and then
- 42:23Speaker 4: they go back and meet some meet some more coaches,
- 42:25Speaker 4: and I take them back to the airport and basically
- 42:28Speaker 4: Nate Newton's telling them, hey, man, I'm gonna sign here.
- 42:30Speaker 4: I love it here, and Charles Haley He's trying to
- 42:33Speaker 4: talk Charles Haley into it and I love this ba
- 42:36Speaker 4: and forth, and so I go back and report to
- 42:39Speaker 4: Marty Hernie what the deal is.
- 42:40Speaker 3: I'm telling Marty like, well, I think.
- 42:42Speaker 1: Newton's in fence.
- 42:45Speaker 3: Yeah, he's trying to convince him.
- 42:47Speaker 4: And so it was definitely we covered some r rated
- 42:52Speaker 4: and beyond of their life, but it was that was
- 42:55Speaker 4: probably the most notable. But I picked up Reggie White
- 42:58Speaker 4: as well from that, right, Yeah, yeah, he finished in
- 43:01Speaker 4: Carolina as well. One of the nicest.
- 43:03Speaker 3: People in the world, and it was sad that his
- 43:08Speaker 3: life and the way it did.
- 43:09Speaker 4: But yeah, he was telling me get him, get him
- 43:13Speaker 4: out there, pick him up early. He wanted to get
- 43:14Speaker 4: in the hot tub for forty minutes to get himself loose,
- 43:17Speaker 4: and yes, you know, it's just it was cool. So
- 43:20Speaker 4: definitely had some some characters.
- 43:22Speaker 3: Eric Swan.
- 43:23Speaker 1: Eric Swan, which is one of my favorite football stories
- 43:25Speaker 1: of all time, did not play college football with a
- 43:27Speaker 1: six overall pick from the cars.
- 43:29Speaker 3: Yeah, so I was around some cool news. It was
- 43:32Speaker 3: it was fun. You learn a lot.
- 43:33Speaker 1: You also knew a young Steve Smith, right, Yes, yes
- 43:37Speaker 1: it was young. What was twenty something? Steve Smith like.
- 43:42Speaker 3: Even more unfiltered, That's what I would say. But I
- 43:46Speaker 3: love him.
- 43:47Speaker 4: His heart was always genuine. You knew where Steve never
- 43:50Speaker 4: hid how he felt. Still really doesn't today. But I
- 43:54Speaker 4: would say, Steve, you're still getting a filtered version of Steve.
- 43:58Speaker 4: I've seen many unfiltered versions. In the two thousand and
- 44:01Speaker 4: one was as unfiltered as a game.
- 44:03Speaker 1: Yeah, I love all this stuff. Your one piece of
- 44:05Speaker 1: advice to a kid who approaches you in the elevator
- 44:08Speaker 1: at the combine and says, excuse me, stir. Here's my
- 44:10Speaker 1: resume printed out. I'm twenty two years old. I just
- 44:13Speaker 1: graduated from John Carroll or I went to Amhurst, and
- 44:17Speaker 1: I want to get into being a GM and I
- 44:18Speaker 1: drove myself to Indianapolis. What would be your one piece
- 44:20Speaker 1: of advice for me getting into the league.
- 44:23Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean to me, it is hard, it really is.
- 44:26Speaker 4: But go get experience wherever you're at. If you're in college,
- 44:30Speaker 4: go work in the athletic office. If you've got a
- 44:32Speaker 4: football program there, go work for there. If you've got
- 44:34Speaker 4: a minor league baseball team in town, like, just get
- 44:38Speaker 4: skins on the wall. Work with different people. A You're
- 44:41Speaker 4: going to meet different people from different walks of life.
- 44:44Speaker 4: You may work with someone in an NBA team that
- 44:47Speaker 4: actually knows someone in the NFL, or a tripa a
- 44:51Speaker 4: baseball team that knows someone in the NBA or the NFL,
- 44:54Speaker 4: whatever it is. Just get out there, work. Don't worry
- 44:58Speaker 4: about the money. Tell people that do not worry about
- 45:00Speaker 4: the money. If you want to be in sports, don't
- 45:03Speaker 4: chase the money. Yes, I'm fortunate now, but this was
- 45:06Speaker 4: a long shot here. I enjoyed every step of the journey.
- 45:10Speaker 4: And if I was, you know, still a football office
- 45:13Speaker 4: assistant or you know, director of football operations, whatever titles
- 45:17Speaker 4: I've had, I guarantee I would have been just as
- 45:20Speaker 4: happy life I was living.
- 45:22Speaker 3: So you gotta love it. It's crazy hours.
- 45:25Speaker 4: You got to make sure if you're getting married, girl,
- 45:27Speaker 4: you know, a wife or husband or whatever it is,
- 45:29Speaker 4: that they are on board the weekends, because I've seen
- 45:33Speaker 4: many get in a few years in their their their
- 45:36Speaker 4: other half does not like the schedule, and it starts
- 45:40Speaker 4: causing some friction and they got to make a move.
- 45:42Speaker 4: So just try to tell them to be upfront with
- 45:44Speaker 4: whoever their significant other is and and you know, just
- 45:49Speaker 4: just be ready for if you're living in one side
- 45:51Speaker 4: of the country and someone calls you the other side,
- 45:53Speaker 4: be able to apartment up in a day and say I'll.
- 45:57Speaker 1: Be there tomorrow, Brandon, I love this. And back to
- 45:59Speaker 1: the significant other thing. Here's what I've learned now that
- 46:02Speaker 1: I've got two kids and you've obviously your great dad.
- 46:05Speaker 1: Be present when you are around, right, make the most
- 46:08Speaker 1: of that time, because that's a major compromise. I'm not
- 46:11Speaker 1: going to be you know, I'm not going to be
- 46:12Speaker 1: there for any weekends over the football season. But hey,
- 46:15Speaker 1: I've got a rare job where there are a couple
- 46:16Speaker 1: of weeks in June in early July where I am around,
- 46:19Speaker 1: Like it, wouldn't you be that? That be your piece
- 46:20Speaker 1: of advice to make the most of that time.
- 46:22Speaker 4: Oh, you got to, you could, because you're going to
- 46:25Speaker 4: be a better employee for the organization if if your
- 46:28Speaker 4: home life's good and you're doing everything there, if you're
- 46:31Speaker 4: if you're leaving things out and you don't want to
- 46:33Speaker 4: regret We've seen it in this in this sport where
- 46:36Speaker 4: you hear coaches or you know whatever, executives that didn't
- 46:40Speaker 4: wann't really around their kids and they missed their whole
- 46:43Speaker 4: their whole livelihood or they're you know, watching them play
- 46:45Speaker 4: sports or play the piano or whatever their passion, whatever
- 46:49Speaker 4: their kids passion is.
- 46:51Speaker 3: You know, it's very important for me to.
- 46:52Speaker 4: Make sure to tell our staff here, and I know
- 46:54Speaker 4: Sean does as well as Listen, we got plenty of hours,
- 46:57Speaker 4: but if your kids playing a game and you can
- 46:59Speaker 4: get there, it's not going to interfere with this job.
- 47:01Speaker 4: I expect you to be there. It will be pissed
- 47:04Speaker 4: if you If.
- 47:04Speaker 1: You do, I love that.
- 47:06Speaker 3: Yeah, So it's you.
- 47:07Speaker 4: Gotta you gotta have that that that balance because it's
- 47:10Speaker 4: hard enough as it is with the hour. So when
- 47:12Speaker 4: you can get home and support your you know, your
- 47:15Speaker 4: significant other and definitely your kids, that's huge.
- 47:19Speaker 3: You know.
- 47:19Speaker 4: The last thing you want to do is be great
- 47:21Speaker 4: at work and screw it up at home.
- 47:24Speaker 1: Man, that's great. My last one with you because I
- 47:27Speaker 1: texted you earlier this summer that I'm picking up golf
- 47:29Speaker 1: for the first time. I've told the podcast listeners my
- 47:32Speaker 1: wife has a gift bought me clubs. I got the
- 47:35Speaker 1: clubs I got in the course, and I've been trying
- 47:37Speaker 1: to mooch off people to be invited to their clubs.
- 47:39Speaker 1: I've played the public courses. I've done it all. I've
- 47:41Speaker 1: been trying. I'm terrible. But you you've always been playing.
- 47:45Speaker 1: So I'm gonna ask you three golf questions. Rattle them
- 47:47Speaker 1: off rapid fire. One your favorite golfer at the moment
- 47:52Speaker 1: is home.
- 47:53Speaker 3: Oh, that's a great one.
- 47:56Speaker 4: Probably Rory. Yeah, yeah, big Rory fan. And he's actually
- 48:02Speaker 4: his wife from Rochester.
- 48:03Speaker 3: Up here and really yeah and her family.
- 48:07Speaker 4: Thanks for Okilla, And I think he is a member
- 48:09Speaker 4: here at o'kill across the streets. So I've enjoyed watching
- 48:12Speaker 4: his game and I think it's it's been cool to
- 48:14Speaker 4: watch him Back to PGA.
- 48:15Speaker 1: Tour, I love it. The coolest course you've played at.
- 48:19Speaker 3: It's I go back and forth.
- 48:22Speaker 4: I mean in America, Pebble Beach, just it's just so beautiful.
- 48:25Speaker 4: It's not the hardest, but just the scenery is It's crazy.
- 48:28Speaker 4: But went to Scotland last summer, did you? And eight
- 48:32Speaker 4: of us went over there and the courses over there,
- 48:35Speaker 4: I mean, all of them are great, but there's a
- 48:36Speaker 4: couple that were just kings barns over there.
- 48:41Speaker 3: Was was was amazing.
- 48:43Speaker 4: There was there was a few that were just you know,
- 48:45Speaker 4: blow your blow your socks off.
- 48:47Speaker 3: I loved if you could tell me I.
- 48:49Speaker 4: Can go anywhere to play golf for a week right now, Scotland.
- 48:53Speaker 3: I would go right back to Scotland really and do
- 48:55Speaker 3: that again. It's it's did I see.
- 48:57Speaker 1: That the Ryder Cup is in Italy this year?
- 49:00Speaker 3: I don't know it made someone said that.
- 49:02Speaker 1: I'm like, that sounds cool. So uh, back to the Scout.
- 49:05Speaker 1: Have you ever played on I assume you've been to
- 49:07Speaker 1: the Masters because I see Josh Allen there all the time.
- 49:09Speaker 1: I figure he's taking his GM who's paying hie hundred
- 49:11Speaker 1: million dollars, He's going to take you as a guest, right.
- 49:14Speaker 4: I have not gotten to play it, but I have.
- 49:17Speaker 4: I did meet someone this year, you know, through someone
- 49:22Speaker 4: at the Kentucky Derby and they're planning to take me
- 49:25Speaker 4: out there.
- 49:26Speaker 3: You know I was going to do it.
- 49:27Speaker 4: I actually doing a pot I did a podcast with
- 49:29Speaker 4: him that's coming out later.
- 49:31Speaker 1: So whatever, don't any money, let me just come.
- 49:34Speaker 3: That was the deal.
- 49:34Speaker 4: Do the podcast and we would go out to uh Augustus.
- 49:38Speaker 4: So that's supposedly coming up sometime in the next twelve months.
- 49:41Speaker 1: Dude, I can't wait. And my last one with the
- 49:43Speaker 1: golf because I think when Nick, you know, I'm a casual,
- 49:46Speaker 1: your real deal. What's the best round you've ever played?
- 49:48Speaker 1: And where did you play it?
- 49:50Speaker 4: The best round was sixty nine. It was a country
- 49:53Speaker 4: club in Buffalo back here. I shot it in the
- 49:55Speaker 4: summer of twenty eighteen. It was my second summer.
- 49:58Speaker 3: Yeah. Yeah, at double bogie the first hole, Did you really.
- 50:00Speaker 1: Because I was going to say, like, when you have
- 50:02Speaker 1: a round like that, do you even have room for
- 50:03Speaker 1: a bogie or is it just par park the whole way?
- 50:05Speaker 4: Yeah, screwed up and bladed a sandwich on the first
- 50:10Speaker 4: hole across the green and ended up making double and
- 50:13Speaker 4: after that I had no blem issues. I had three
- 50:16Speaker 4: birdies after that to get It's a par seventy, so
- 50:18Speaker 4: I got got.
- 50:18Speaker 3: It back to one under.
- 50:20Speaker 1: Have you read a home on one?
- 50:21Speaker 3: Yes, two thousand and eight.
- 50:23Speaker 1: Look, if I asked you, like, who was the third
- 50:26Speaker 1: round picker that you guys had last year, you might
- 50:28Speaker 1: you might you might stumble No. Two thousand and eight.
- 50:30Speaker 1: Where was it?
- 50:31Speaker 4: Yeah, it was a place called the Witch. It's down
- 50:34Speaker 4: in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. So I was playing with
- 50:38Speaker 4: a few guys down there, and yeah, it was. It
- 50:41Speaker 4: was on the back now I think it was Hold
- 50:42Speaker 4: twelve was one hundred and sixty yards and the guys
- 50:47Speaker 4: in the group's all going before I did.
- 50:49Speaker 3: I thought they were messing with me.
- 50:50Speaker 1: Yeah, I gotcha, I started it was.
- 50:52Speaker 3: It was wild.
- 50:53Speaker 1: The parallels of playing golf and being a GM are
- 50:55Speaker 1: there any? Do you see any similarities? Or is this
- 50:57Speaker 1: your total? You know, take your foot off the pedal.
- 50:59Speaker 1: That's where you go to escape.
- 51:00Speaker 3: It is where I go to escape.
- 51:02Speaker 4: I mean you listen, like in anything that you that
- 51:05Speaker 4: you want to be good at, to be mentally tough,
- 51:07Speaker 4: and you're gonna have adversity.
- 51:08Speaker 3: You can have adversity on the course. You can have
- 51:10Speaker 3: adversity in this job, and.
- 51:11Speaker 4: So just find the positive from it and learn from
- 51:16Speaker 4: what you did wrong.
- 51:17Speaker 3: And so those are probably the parallels.
- 51:19Speaker 1: Love it, Brandon, No thirty five minutes, Just like that.
- 51:22Speaker 1: Appreciate it, bro, fantastic.
- 51:24Speaker 3: Easy, always easy with you, buddy, anytime you know that great.
- 51:28Speaker 1: I've got to make my super Bowl pick in the
- 51:29Speaker 1: next couple of weeks. It might be Bills, it might
- 51:31Speaker 1: not be, but you don't hold it against me when
- 51:33Speaker 1: it's not right. No, no, no, it's usually wrong anyway.
- 51:36Speaker 4: Actually, yeah, everybody picked us last year, so I just
- 51:39Speaker 4: assumed nobody pick us, and let's just.
- 51:41Speaker 1: Be probably better off. Let's go play football. Bill's Jets
- 51:44Speaker 1: Monday night, Week one. Brandon Bean, you'll be up in
- 51:46Speaker 1: that in that booth watching with your binoculars. I'm sure
- 51:49Speaker 1: I'll see you on the broadcast and hopefully i'll see
- 51:51Speaker 1: you there. You're the man. Thanks for joining GM and
- 51:53Speaker 1: the Buffalo Bills. Brandon Bean.
- 51:55Speaker 3: Thanks, Peter, I'll see you so, buddy.
- 52:17Speaker 1: Brandon Bean's the man. I love having him on and
- 52:20Speaker 1: I'm rooting for him, I really am. I feel like
- 52:22Speaker 1: a Bill super Bowl one of these years would be
- 52:24Speaker 1: a great thing for the city, but also for that guy,
- 52:26Speaker 1: as you could tell, good friend of mine and a great,
- 52:29Speaker 1: great evaluator. Another good friend of mine is on the
- 52:33Speaker 1: phone at the moment. Yes, the phone. He doesn't do zoom,
- 52:37Speaker 1: he doesn't do riverside, he doesn't do any of these things.
- 52:39Speaker 1: He does the phone. And then we have to use
- 52:42Speaker 1: his audio from the phone. Whould drop it And it's
- 52:43Speaker 1: one of my best friends from growing up, and he's
- 52:45Speaker 1: been a regular guest during the football season. You haven't
- 52:47Speaker 1: heard from a much. It's my buddy, Dietro Deetro. What's up, man,
- 52:50Speaker 1: Peter Schrager.
- 52:51Speaker 7: Thanks for having me back again. Every time I'm on,
- 52:54Speaker 7: it's always a tough follow. Now I'm following Brandon Bean.
- 52:57Speaker 1: Brandon Bean's an Executive of the Year, one of the
- 53:00Speaker 1: greatest GMS in the last twenty years. And now here
- 53:03Speaker 1: you are a childhood pala mine and you are the
- 53:06Speaker 1: main event or the dessert, however you want to put it.
- 53:07Speaker 1: But I want to bring you on specifically, not for
- 53:09Speaker 1: your football thoughts. I know you've got football thoughts. I
- 53:11Speaker 1: know you've got lots of thoughts on Saquan's contract, but
- 53:14Speaker 1: more about what these next few days meant to you
- 53:18Speaker 1: and me as kids. And let me explain to the listeners.
- 53:22Speaker 1: Dietro and I went to summer camp together. This is
- 53:27Speaker 1: not for everyone. This is very niche a Northeast thing,
- 53:30Speaker 1: if you will. Dietro and I went to summer camp together.
- 53:33Speaker 1: We didn't grow up in the same town. He grew
- 53:35Speaker 1: up in a town in Long Island. I grew up
- 53:36Speaker 1: in New Jersey. Our parents could not stand us. They
- 53:39Speaker 1: would send us away to a sleepway camp where we
- 53:41Speaker 1: learn how to build fires and sing songs and tell
- 53:44Speaker 1: scary stories and do pranks. But the last few days
- 53:48Speaker 1: of the summer camp season was something called color war.
- 53:53Speaker 1: And right now colour war is starting at our camp,
- 53:56Speaker 1: Camp La Conda, where we went, and camps across the
- 53:59Speaker 1: main Pennsylvania, Upstate New York, locate, geography, whatever you want
- 54:05Speaker 1: to say. Camps are all going on right now, and
- 54:07Speaker 1: it's colour war. It's the last thing of the summer detro.
- 54:10Speaker 1: Why don't you tell our listeners who may have never
- 54:11Speaker 1: heard of summer camp or never heard of color war,
- 54:14Speaker 1: what color war is?
- 54:17Speaker 3: Okay, So.
- 54:19Speaker 7: Taking to the fact that you start up at summer
- 54:24Speaker 7: camp right around the third week of June, so you're
- 54:27Speaker 7: there for about six weeks in a row, and it's
- 54:30Speaker 7: you and call it maybe about twenty other guys that
- 54:34Speaker 7: are in your age group, and the whole summer all
- 54:37Speaker 7: you're doing, you're hanging out, you're having a good time,
- 54:40Speaker 7: you're playing sports, you're going swimming, you're doing everything that's
- 54:44Speaker 7: just based around you. Just having fun for six straight
- 54:49Speaker 7: weeks at a summer camp, and it's unbelievable. And then
- 54:53Speaker 7: all of a sudden, the last week of camp, they say, Okay,
- 54:57Speaker 7: there's four hundred campers or so that are here this summer.
- 55:01Speaker 3: We are going to split you up into two teams.
- 55:04Speaker 7: There's two hundred on this side and two hundred on
- 55:06Speaker 7: that side, and it goes by age, whatever group that
- 55:08Speaker 7: you're in. And for the next three and a half
- 55:11Speaker 7: to four days, you are going to be split up
- 55:14Speaker 7: with the guys or girls your age, and you are
- 55:17Speaker 7: just gonna do every athletic competition against one another in
- 55:21Speaker 7: just wild competitive nature, scores being kept.
- 55:26Speaker 3: Everybody's split apart. It tears you.
- 55:29Speaker 7: It tears you apart so much that the old saying
- 55:31Speaker 7: in slip boy camps was.
- 55:33Speaker 3: No color war in the bunks.
- 55:34Speaker 6: Remember that beater, no color, No color were allowed on
- 55:37Speaker 6: the bunks. When you're out on the soccer field, the
- 55:39Speaker 6: basketball court, that color war.
- 55:40Speaker 3: You're up.
- 55:41Speaker 7: If you're out in the dining hall and you sit
- 55:42Speaker 7: at the table, says color are You're screaming back and forth,
- 55:45Speaker 7: back and forth at each other. But when you get
- 55:47Speaker 7: back to the bunk, everybody has to take a step back.
- 55:49Speaker 7: No Color were allowing the bunks because otherwise you'd overflow.
- 55:51Speaker 8: And just it would be too competitive that there might
- 55:54Speaker 8: be fights that are up in the bunk and you
- 55:57Speaker 8: just spend three or four days doing everything competitive against
- 56:02Speaker 8: the guy that maybe slept in the bunk bed above
- 56:06Speaker 8: who it was your best friend for the past six weeks,
- 56:08Speaker 8: and now you guys hate each other because.
- 56:10Speaker 6: You're on opposite sides of the aisle.
- 56:12Speaker 7: It's it's just the most amazing four day span of
- 56:15Speaker 7: the summer for you.
- 56:16Speaker 6: And this right now, this sort of second week of August.
- 56:20Speaker 7: If you're someone who's in our age bracket and you
- 56:23Speaker 7: went to Sleepway camp, did this. If you're logging on
- 56:26Speaker 7: the Facebook, you're logging on Instagram, whatever it is you,
- 56:29Speaker 7: you your friends.
- 56:31Speaker 6: Of yours that I have kids.
- 56:32Speaker 7: You're seeing all the live stories that are popping up,
- 56:35Speaker 7: and everything is happening you.
- 56:37Speaker 6: You can't escape it. But then it's so amazing, and
- 56:40Speaker 6: all of a sudden, guys you haven't spoken to twenty
- 56:42Speaker 6: years are texting you and being like, oh my god,
- 56:44Speaker 6: you remember this from Color. Remember It's just the most
- 56:47Speaker 6: amazing flashback. I love it.
- 56:51Speaker 1: We were texting about it. It's like I got to
- 56:53Speaker 1: come on the podcast and explain the school field. Don't
- 56:54Speaker 1: even know it is. But I don't remember who won
- 56:57Speaker 1: Color War any year, but I remember exploits from Color War,
- 56:59Speaker 1: like I remember there was something called the relay and
- 57:02Speaker 1: then you heroically threw a softball through a tire before
- 57:06Speaker 1: our friend. And it's still it was probably thirty years ago,
- 57:10Speaker 1: it's still one of your best athletic moments, if not
- 57:12Speaker 1: your best life moments.
- 57:13Speaker 7: Right, It's something that set me up for the path
- 57:16Speaker 7: of success.
- 57:19Speaker 1: How old were you when you threw a softball through attire?
- 57:22Speaker 6: I was fifteen?
- 57:25Speaker 1: And what would you say? How did that set you
- 57:27Speaker 1: up for a path of success?
- 57:29Speaker 7: It just let you know you win there. You always
- 57:32Speaker 7: have that story in your back pocket. You'll always do.
- 57:35Speaker 7: And you know, as you get a little bit older
- 57:38Speaker 7: and you grow up on Long Island or in New
- 57:40Speaker 7: Jersey or in that camping world, as you go off
- 57:43Speaker 7: to college and you start to meet new people, you
- 57:45Speaker 7: start to sort of make connections and you meet someone
- 57:49Speaker 7: who knows someone or a friend of a friend, and
- 57:51Speaker 7: it's it's the most amazing icebreaker you can have, is
- 57:55Speaker 7: if you know a camp's friend's friend or a friend
- 57:58Speaker 7: of somebody who went to camp with someone you know,
- 58:00Speaker 7: or something like that. And right away you bring up Colorward,
- 58:03Speaker 7: you bring up the souffle throat. They know, everyone knows
- 58:06Speaker 7: how it is because every camp out there has some
- 58:09Speaker 7: sort of a final event that everybody's watching that when
- 58:13Speaker 7: you're eight, nine, ten years old, you wish.
- 58:16Speaker 6: And you hope and you can't wait to be.
- 58:18Speaker 3: Able to do that.
- 58:19Speaker 7: And then when you actually do it and you win,
- 58:21Speaker 7: you're able to tell that story to anybody who's been
- 58:24Speaker 7: in the camper world and they get it and they
- 58:26Speaker 7: respect it, and the ice is broken, and you can
- 58:28Speaker 7: discuss anything you want, whether it's friends, if you're in
- 58:30Speaker 7: the business.
- 58:31Speaker 6: World, anything you want. The walls come down and any
- 58:34Speaker 6: the doors are open to you.
- 58:36Speaker 1: Todd, thank you. Let me ask you one more question
- 58:40Speaker 1: because you had to take that no one else had.
- 58:42Speaker 1: Sean Payton's comments on Nathaniel Hackett go I.
- 58:46Speaker 6: Mean me personally, I kind of love those comments. I mean,
- 58:53Speaker 6: the Broncos.
- 58:54Speaker 7: Were more or less the worst team in the league
- 58:56Speaker 7: last year, and you know, Nathaniel Hackett, whether whether it's
- 59:00Speaker 7: his fault or not, he's the head coach that's all
- 59:03Speaker 7: his fault.
- 59:04Speaker 6: They hired Sean Payton for a reason.
- 59:05Speaker 3: John Payton and.
- 59:06Speaker 6: Has a long line of credibility behind him.
- 59:10Speaker 7: You know, there's very few coaches left in the league
- 59:12Speaker 7: that have Lombardi Trophy's sitting on their walls.
- 59:15Speaker 6: Right there. He has the right and the credibility to
- 59:18Speaker 6: come in and turn things around and say what he
- 59:20Speaker 6: has to say to gain his team moving forward. What
- 59:22Speaker 6: does he care what he has to say about the Jets?
- 59:23Speaker 1: Rightfully? So there it is. Can wait to have you
