- 0:00Hello, welcome to your daily Grace. By Timothy Wilder Grace on Trial Week two Moral Concerns Episode nine Should Grace be balanced with Law?
- 0:14One of the most common phrases heard in Christian conversations is yes, we're saved by grace, but grace needs to be balanced with law.
- 0:26For a long time, that sounded perfectly reasonable to me.
- 0:30In fact, it sounded responsible. I had spent my entire life in church.
- 0:36Certain ideas about faith, obedience, and spiritual growth had been part of my thinking for so long that I rarely questioned them.
- 0:47When I first began hearing Grace Centered Teaching, I wasn't looking to abandon everything I had believed before.
- 0:55I was looking for a way to keep as much of it as possible.
- 1:00That's why the idea of balance was so appealing. Balance allowed me to embrace grace without fully letting go of older beliefs and habits of thinking. I could acknowledge that grace was important while still keeping law law nearby as a safety net.
- 1:22I didn't have to surrender everything at once. I could simply de emphasize some things without giving them up entire.
- 1:30That felt safer. Looking back, I think many believers experience something similar.
- 1:37Very few people consciously reject grace.
- 1:41The temptation is usually much subtler. We try to combine grace with familiar systems of performance, rules, or self effort. Because those things feel tangible.
- 1:54We know how to measure them. We know how to evaluate ourselves by them. The problem is that Scripture kept leading me back to a question I couldn't Does God actually call us to balance grace and law?
- 2:11When Paul wrote to the Galatians, he was addressing believers who had begun their Christian lives trusting Christ but were now being tempted to place their confidence somewhere else.
- 2:25His question was direct. Having begun in the Spirit, are you now being made perfect by the flesh?
- 2:33Galatians 3:3 NKJV that verse stayed with me because Paul never suggested finding a healthier balance between grace and law.
- 2:44Instead, he challenged the assumption that spiritual growth could come through a mixture of God's work and human effort. The more I reflected on that, the more I began to recognize myself in the problem.
- 3:01I wasn't rejecting Christ. I I wasn't abandoning grace.
- 3:06I was simply keeping a few familiar measuring sticks nearby.
- 3:11Those measuring sticks gave me a way to evaluate my standing with God. They gave me a sense of control.
- 3:20The trouble was that my confidence kept drifting away from Christ and back toward my own performance.
- 3:28Paul describes a very different reality in Romans 7:4 6 believers have died to the law through the body of Christ and have been joined to Christ himself.
- 3:42As a result, we now serve in the newness of the Spirit and not in the oldness of the letter.
- 3:49Romans 7:6 NKJ Notice where the focus is placed. The issue is not whether obedience matters. Of course it matters. The issue is what produces it. The law can reveal God's standard and expose our need, but it cannot produce spiritual life. John points us toward the answer when he writes, for the law was given through Moses, but grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.
- 4:20John 1:17 NKJV what finally changed my thinking was realizing that balance often became mixture, and mixture allowed me to keep a measure of confidence in myself.
- 4:36Scripture kept calling me somewhere better not to a balance between Christ and my performance, not to a mixture of grace and law, but to wholehearted confidence in Christ Himself.
- 4:50When you think about spiritual growth, what do you find yourself relying on most?
