- 0:12Hello friend Sean here and it is Friday the 3rd of November and a
- 0:18happy weekend. Well almost weekend to you.
- 0:21Happy Friday. Well done.
- 0:22Here we are at the end of another week.
- 0:25You have reached the point where we can now look forward to a
- 0:29weekend ahead. I hope that it has got some kind
- 0:33of rest and restoration for you as we now do whatever it is we
- 0:38need to do to finish off strong. I hope you are going well today.
- 0:43As is our way, we will be reading a Psalm together and
- 0:47this is a Royal Psalm. It is a Psalm remembering the
- 0:51covenant with David and expressing sorrow for those
- 0:55blessings that have been lost through, Well, of course, the
- 1:00foolishness of humanity that that goes against what God asks
- 1:05us to do to remain faithful to him.
- 1:08That's how we roll. That's that's the story of the
- 1:11Bible, isn't it? This is the bigger narrative.
- 1:14God says I love you do this. And we say, ah Nah, we'll do our
- 1:19own thing. And God says no, no, I love you
- 1:22do this. And we say Nah, and again and
- 1:25again and again through the history of God's work with
- 1:28humanity. This is how we behave,
- 1:31unfortunately. And it's not swept under the
- 1:35carpet. It is written about and
- 1:38celebrated in the Psalms because this is our heritage.
- 1:51So let us read together a Psalm of Ethan the Ezra Height, Psalm
- 1:5789. I will sing of the Lord's
- 2:02unfailing love forever. Young and old will hear of your
- 2:06faithfulness. Your unfailing love will last
- 2:10forever. Your faithfulness is as enduring
- 2:14as the heavens. The Lord said.
- 2:18I have made a covenant with David, my chosen servant.
- 2:22I have sworn this oath to him. I will establish your
- 2:27descendants as kings forever. They will sit on your throne
- 2:31from now until eternity. All heaven will praise your
- 2:36great wonders. Lord Myriads of Angel will
- 2:39praise you for your faithfulness.
- 2:42For who in all of heaven can compare with the Lord?
- 2:46What mightiest Angel is anything like the Lord?
- 2:50The highest angelic powers stand in awe of God.
- 2:54He is far more awesome than all who surround his throne.
- 2:59O Lord God of Heaven's armies, where is there anyone as mighty
- 3:05as you? O Lord, you are entirely
- 3:09faithful. You rule the oceans.
- 3:12You subdue their storm tossed waves.
- 3:16You crushed the great sea monster.
- 3:18You scattered your enemies with your mighty arm.
- 3:22The heavens are yours and the earth is yours.
- 3:25Everything in the world is yours.
- 3:28You created it all. You created North and South.
- 3:33Mount table and Mount Hermon. Praise your name.
- 3:37Powerful is your arm. Strong is your hand.
- 3:41Your right hand is lifted high in glorious strength.
- 3:46Righteousness and justice are the foundations of your throne.
- 3:50Unfailing. Love and truth walk before you
- 3:54as attendants. Happy are those who hear the
- 3:57joyful call to worship, for they will walk in the light of your
- 4:01presence. Lord, they rejoice all day long
- 4:05in your wonderful reputation. They exalt in your
- 4:09righteousness. You are their glorious strength.
- 4:13It pleases you to make us strong.
- 4:16Yes. Our protection comes from the
- 4:19Lord and He, the holy One of Israel has given us our king.
- 4:26Long ago you spoke in a vision to your faithful people.
- 4:29You said. I have raised up a warrior.
- 4:33I have selected him from the common people to be king.
- 4:38I have found my servant David. I have anointed him with my holy
- 4:43oil. I will steady him with my hand.
- 4:47With my powerful arm I will make him strong.
- 4:51His enemies will not defeat him, nor will the wicked overpower
- 4:55him. I will beat down his adversaries
- 4:58before him and destroy those who hate him.
- 5:02My faithfulness and unfailing love will be with him, and by my
- 5:07authority he will grow in power. I will extend his rule over the
- 5:13sea, his dominion over the rivers, and he will call out to
- 5:18me. You are my father, my God, and
- 5:22the rock of my salvation. I will make him my first born
- 5:27son, the mightiest king on earth.
- 5:30I will love him and be kind to him forever.
- 5:34My covenant with him will never end.
- 5:37I will preserve an heir for him. His throne will be as endless as
- 5:42the days of heaven. But if his descendants forsake
- 5:46my instructions and fail to obey my regulations, if they do not
- 5:51obey my decrees and fail to keep my commands, then I will punish
- 5:56their sin with the rod, and their disobedience with beating.
- 6:01But I will never stop loving him, nor fail to keep my promise
- 6:05to him. No, I will not break my
- 6:09covenant. I will not take back a single
- 6:12word I said. I have sworn an oath to David,
- 6:16and in my holiness. I cannot lie.
- 6:19His dynasty will go on forever. His Kingdom will endure as the
- 6:24sun. It will be as eternal as the
- 6:27moon. My faithful witness in the sky.
- 6:32But now you have rejected him and cast him off.
- 6:37You are angry with your anointed king.
- 6:39You have renounced your covenant with him.
- 6:42You have thrown his crown into the dust.
- 6:45You have broken down the walls protecting him and ruined every
- 6:49Fort defending him. Everyone who comes along has
- 6:53robbed him, and he has become a joke to his neighbors.
- 6:57You have strengthened his enemies and made them all
- 7:00rejoice. You have made his sword useless
- 7:04and refused to help him in battle.
- 7:07You have ended his splendor and overturned his throne.
- 7:10You have made him old before his time and publicly disgraced him.
- 7:16Oh Lord, how long will this go on?
- 7:20Will you hide yourself forever? How long will your anger burn
- 7:25like fire? Remember how short my life is,
- 7:28How empty and futile this human existence.
- 7:32No one can live forever. We all die.
- 7:36No one can escape the power of the grave.
- 7:40Lord, where is your unfailing love?
- 7:44You promised it to David with a faithful pledge.
- 7:48Consider, Lord, how your servants are disgraced.
- 7:52I carry in my heart the insults of so many people.
- 7:57Your enemies have mocked me. O Lord, they mock your anointed
- 8:02king wherever he goes. Praise the Lord forever.
- 8:16Amen and Amen. Wow.
- 8:24Thank you for the Psalm, Father. Thank you that it talks of your
- 8:30eternal faithfulness on one hand, but also the consequences
- 8:35of us turning our back on you on the other hand.
- 8:39We know this story only too well as we read through the
- 8:43Scriptures, but also as we examine our own heart and our
- 8:46own lives. Thank you that through our own
- 8:52folly, as we turn to you and turn away from you.
- 8:56Through all of that, you remain consistent and when we find
- 9:02ourselves backs turn to you, help us like the Psalmist cry
- 9:08out to you that we would turn back to you and step back into
- 9:13your embrace that was there on offer all along.
- 9:20You are an incredibly faithful, loving, generous God.
- 9:28Help us to live in your promise to us and thank you that when we
- 9:34completely mess it up, we have Jesus cleansing us and drawing
- 9:40us back in. You are a wonderful God who has
- 9:46taken care of everyone of our foibles, and we are so grateful
- 9:52and we rest in your loving embrace, our Father, our God and
- 9:59our Savior. In Jesus name, we pray these
- 10:03things. Amen.
