- 0:00Speaker 1: In different interviews, I've seen you speak a lot about
- 0:02Speaker 1: different breathwork exercises. What is a simple breathwork exercise that
- 0:06Speaker 1: I could start with that would help me overall?
- 0:10Speaker 2: It will bore you to tears if I tell you
- 0:12Speaker 2: what it is. And that's the problem with so much
- 0:14Speaker 2: of this stuff is it's so simple that anyone can
- 0:18Speaker 2: do it at any time. People are like, hey, I
- 0:20Speaker 2: want the secret, man. I want the medicinal stuff that
- 0:23Speaker 2: you discovered in a cave in the Himalayas. I wish
- 0:27Speaker 2: it were that easy. So I can give you a
- 0:29Speaker 2: very simple one that's probably been the most studied out
- 0:32Speaker 2: of any of these. Most of us tend to breathe
- 0:34Speaker 2: too much. We tend to breathe up into our chest.
- 0:37Speaker 2: We tend to breathe through our mouths. And when we
- 0:39Speaker 2: breathe this way, we send stress signals to our brain.
- 0:46Speaker 2: And so we stay in this state of sympathetic stress
- 0:50Speaker 2: all day long. So that increases your risk of diabetes,
- 0:54Speaker 2: All of these other heinous problems, autoimmune issues.
- 0:56Speaker 1: What's inflammation you're causing yourself for sure.
- 0:59Speaker 2: Constant inflammation, right? Constant, constant stress. So what you have
- 1:04Speaker 2: to do is go back to the way that you
- 1:07Speaker 2: were supposed to be breathing, to the way that nature
- 1:10Speaker 2: intended you to breathe. And so a very simple practice
- 1:14Speaker 2: that a lot of people start off with is you
- 1:16Speaker 2: can place the palm of your hand just below your
- 1:19Speaker 2: belly button, right? And you're going to breathe in through
- 1:23Speaker 2: your nose. And you want to feel your belly expand.
- 1:28Speaker 2: And as you breathe out, you want to feel it
- 1:30Speaker 2: come back in.
- 1:32Speaker 1: Breathe out through my nose?
- 1:33Speaker 2: I'm sorry, through your nose, in and out through your nose.
- 1:36Speaker 2: So as you breathe back out, you should feel the
- 1:39Speaker 2: belly contract. So you can actually do this. Around 90%
- 1:42Speaker 2: of people can't. They aren't comfortable enough with their guts
- 1:45Speaker 2: to do this. So if you do that at around
- 1:48Speaker 2: five seconds in, five seconds out, through the nose.
- 1:52Speaker 1: Okay, you want to take me through it?
- 1:53Speaker 2: I can, yeah. If you don't mind, James.
- 1:55Speaker 1: Thank you.
- 1:55Speaker 2: Yeah, just keep your hand there and make sure when
- 1:57Speaker 2: you're inhaling that that hand is coming out a little bit.
- 2:01Speaker 2: So you're just going to start in a couple seconds.
- 2:05Speaker 2: You're exhaling now. Three, two, one, and in, two, three. three, four, five,
- 2:15Speaker 2: and out, two, three, four, five, and in, two, three, four, five,
- 2:28Speaker 2: and out, two, three, four, five. And you just keep
- 2:35Speaker 2: with that rhythm what you're doing is you are sending
- 2:40Speaker 2: your brain and body signals that you are relaxed, that
- 2:44Speaker 2: you are safe. When your body gets these signals, it
- 2:48Speaker 2: can help restore itself and recover itself so much more quickly.
- 2:53Speaker 2: If you have high blood pressure, there's a good chance
- 2:56Speaker 2: your blood pressure is going to go down. The stress
- 2:58Speaker 2: hormones are going to decrease. This is the way we're
- 3:02Speaker 2: supposed to naturally be. In that state, we're not supposed
- 3:06Speaker 2: to be hunched over with our shoulders tense. Sometimes, you know,
- 3:11Speaker 2: when you're in a stressful situation, when you're about to
- 3:13Speaker 2: fight someone, when you have to defend yourself, stress is
- 3:16Speaker 2: an amazing thing. But most of the time, our bodies
- 3:19Speaker 2: are built, they need time to recover and to heal
- 3:22Speaker 2: all the damage that we inflict on them. And this
- 3:25Speaker 2: is called coherent breathing because it puts these different systems
- 3:28Speaker 2: of your body into the state of coherence. Wow. Wow.
- 3:33Speaker 1: And that's really how I feel right now. I almost
- 3:35Speaker 1: feel like I got a little high.
- 3:37Speaker 2: Yeah. You just wait. There's some other stuff we can
- 3:39Speaker 2: do that will definitely get you high. Yeah.
- 3:42Speaker 1: Pack open a 12-pack of that magic air, baby. You know,
- 3:45Speaker 1: that's what I need.
- 3:46Speaker 2: You're getting proper blood flow to your brain. So they've
- 3:49Speaker 2: found that you'll make better decisions. You can regulate your
- 3:53Speaker 2: emotions so much more efficiently. It's great for heart health.
- 3:57Speaker 2: blood pressure. And again, this isn't like some woo-woo thing.
- 4:00Speaker 2: You don't need to go out and buy a pill.
- 4:02Speaker 2: You don't need to subscribe to anything. This is something
- 4:06Speaker 2: that is available to everybody. So people who think these
- 4:09Speaker 2: breathing practices are, oh, I don't like yoga, you know,
- 4:13Speaker 2: I don't like jewelry or turquoise or whatever. This is
- 4:16Speaker 2: a biological function that you can do wherever. If you're
- 4:19Speaker 2: driving right now, you can try to breathe at around
- 4:23Speaker 2: five seconds in, five seconds out. And you can feel
- 4:27Speaker 2: what happens. I feel calmer right now. And I even
- 4:30Speaker 2: smiled a second ago. It just came into my face.
- 4:32Speaker 2: I saw that. You did?
- 4:33Speaker 1: That's cool, yeah.
- 4:34Speaker 2: For one second.
- 4:35Speaker 1: Yeah, but hey, for me, that's a lot. That's a
- 4:38Speaker 1: lot of a day where I'm just naturally feeling good.
- 4:40Speaker 1: And I'll tell you this, even momentarily after, and even
- 4:45Speaker 1: it started to make me want to just keep doing
- 4:47Speaker 1: it as opposed to like, am I breathing in my nose?
- 4:50Speaker 1: Am I breathing in my mouth? Just not consciously. It
- 4:52Speaker 1: started to like, I almost want to do it again
- 4:58Speaker 1: and again because it feels good.
- 5:00Speaker 2: Well, here's the trick with these things. Like we don't
- 5:02Speaker 2: need another box to check every day. You know, we
- 5:04Speaker 2: got to, oh, did I get my protein? Did I
- 5:06Speaker 2: sleep my eight hours? Did I walk 20 minutes? All
- 5:09Speaker 2: of that. What you want to do is to practice
- 5:12Speaker 2: these techniques enough, right? That this becomes your new default.
- 5:18Speaker 2: This becomes your unconscious default. Breathing.
- 5:21Speaker 1: That can take a couple of months to do. What
- 5:24Speaker 1: would be like a more difficult breathing exercise?
- 5:27Speaker 2: If we had an hour, I could get you extremely
- 5:30Speaker 2: high with something, but we don't. So we're going to
- 5:32Speaker 2: have to do some quick stuff here. Okay. If you
- 5:35Speaker 2: are driving, if you are near water, do not do this. Okay.
- 5:39Speaker 2: Use common sense. I just want to make that Super clear.
- 5:42Speaker 1: Yeah, I want to say that too. Do not do it.
- 5:44Speaker 2: Okay. Do not do it. This is just for demonstration
- 5:47Speaker 2: purpose only, right? You're sitting in a chair. We're here.
- 5:50Speaker 2: It's cool. You can try this. This is a pranayama
- 5:52Speaker 2: technique that when I am really jet lagged, which is
- 5:56Speaker 2: most of my waking hours, I've noticed when I need energy,
- 6:00Speaker 2: when I need instant clarity, you can do this. It's
- 6:03Speaker 2: a little weird. You wouldn't want to do it in public,
- 6:06Speaker 2: but here we are. And I think you want to
- 6:08Speaker 2: get a little weird, so why not? Yeah. Let's do it.
- 6:11Speaker 1: Okay.
- 6:11Speaker 2: Let's do it. So the concept here is we are
- 6:14Speaker 2: going to be breathing an inhale through the nose. Then
- 6:18Speaker 2: you're going to be holding without exhaling. Then you're going
- 6:20Speaker 2: to be breathing in again. Okay. Then you're going to
- 6:22Speaker 2: be holding. Then you're going to be breathing in. You
- 6:24Speaker 2: see where this is going. You're going to keep doing
- 6:26Speaker 2: that until you reach the very top of your breath,
- 6:29Speaker 2: until you cannot fit any more air in your lungs. Okay.
- 6:33Speaker 2: you're going to squeeze as hard as you can. You're
- 6:35Speaker 2: going to squeeze your fists, squeeze your toes, squeeze your butt,
- 6:40Speaker 2: squeeze your stomach, squeeze, squeeze everything and try to bring
- 6:44Speaker 2: it inward towards the center of your abdomen. Okay. Just
- 6:48Speaker 2: focus on bringing that. And then we're going to do
- 6:50Speaker 2: it again. We're going to do this a few times.
- 6:53Speaker 1: Okay.
- 6:53Speaker 2: Okay. The whole thing will probably take a minute. Okay.
- 6:56Speaker 2: But we'll, we'll see what happens. So just relax, relax
- 6:58Speaker 2: your shoulders. Take an easy breath in. and an easy
- 7:03Speaker 2: breath out. We're going to take one more easy breath in,
- 7:08Speaker 2: easy breath in, and easy breath out. And now we're
- 7:13Speaker 2: going to go. We're going to breathe.
- 7:15Speaker 3: Up, breathe, hold, breathe, hold, breathe, hold, breathe, hold, more, more, more, more, more,
- 7:24Speaker 3: all the way up, all the way up, all the
- 7:26Speaker 3: way up.
- 7:26Speaker 2: Squeeze everything. Hold your breath. Squeeze everything. Squeeze everything. Keep squeezing.
- 7:31Speaker 2: Squeeze harder. Let's go. Keep squeezing. Keep squeezing.
- 7:35Speaker 3: Let it go.
- 7:37Speaker 2: Breathe in.
- 7:39Speaker 1: Hold.
- 7:39Speaker 2: Breathe in.
- 7:40Speaker 1: Hold.
- 7:41Speaker 2: Breathe in.
- 7:42Speaker 1: Hold.
- 7:42Speaker 2: Breathe in. Breathe in. Breathe in. Breathe in. All the
- 7:45Speaker 2: way up. Squeeze everything. Squeeze everything. Squeeze everything. Keep holding
- 7:48Speaker 2: your breath. We're going to do it longer now. Keep squeezing.
- 7:51Speaker 2: Keep holding. Keep squeezing. Keep going. Keep going. Lift everything
- 7:56Speaker 2: towards your stomach and let it out. We're going to
- 7:59Speaker 2: do one more. Okay.
- 8:00Speaker 1: Ready?
- 8:01Speaker 2: Breathe in.
- 8:02Speaker 1: Hold.
- 8:03Speaker 2: Breathe in, hold, breathe in, hold, breathe in, breathe in,
- 8:06Speaker 2: breathe in, breathe in, all the way up and squeeze, squeeze, squeeze, squeeze, squeeze.
- 8:10Speaker 2: Hold your breath, hold your breath, hold your breath, hold
- 8:12Speaker 2: your breath. Squeeze everything towards your stomach. Keep going, keep going,
- 8:17Speaker 2: keep going. You got five more seconds. Five, four, three, two, one,
- 8:23Speaker 2: let it go. I can feel my heart racing. How
- 8:45Speaker 2: do you feel different? I feel pretty chill.
- 8:55Speaker 1: Overall. Yeah, I mean, I wouldn't take a breathalyzer right now, probably.
- 9:01Speaker 1: I definitely feel a little bit buzzed up.
- 9:07Speaker 2: So what you did right now.
- 9:07Speaker 1: I feel relaxed. Good.
- 9:09Speaker 2: Which you did right there. This is a very short version.
- 9:12Speaker 2: It's better to have a longer amount of time. We
- 9:15Speaker 2: can go through the whole process. It doesn't make for
- 9:18Speaker 2: very good podcasts or radio. So we're not going to
- 9:21Speaker 2: sit and listen to you be silent for 20 minutes breathing.
- 9:25Speaker 2: But the point of this is you're purposely stressing your
- 9:29Speaker 2: body out. You're taking control of your nervous system and
- 9:32Speaker 2: you're cranking it up to 11 and you're compounding all
- 9:36Speaker 2: of that stress. Then you're releasing it. or you're letting
- 9:39Speaker 2: your body know and your brain know that you're in
- 9:42Speaker 2: control of that stress you turn it on you turn
- 9:47Speaker 2: it off you turn it on you turn it off
- 9:50Speaker 2: what most of us do throughout the day is we
- 9:53Speaker 2: have this chronic low-grade stress it's always there it's buzzing
- 9:58Speaker 2: around we never let it go right? So we never
- 10:01Speaker 2: blow it out, but we never truly relax. And this
- 10:04Speaker 2: is one of the main reasons so many of us
- 10:07Speaker 2: are so sick. Again, this is not some crazy hypothesis. Well,
- 10:12Speaker 2: stress is inflammation. It's chronic inflammation. Chronic stress is one
- 10:16Speaker 2: of the leading causes. of so many issues. So if
- 10:20Speaker 2: you spend a few minutes a day, you don't have
- 10:22Speaker 2: to do the weird stuff, right? There's other things you
- 10:24Speaker 2: can do in public. No one realizes you're doing this.
- 10:27Speaker 2: It's your own private little secret that you can do.
- 10:31Speaker 2: And just to have that pressure release throughout the day.
- 10:34Speaker 2: A lot of people use yoga or exercise or weightlifting.
- 10:39Speaker 2: All of those things are awesome. They work great, but
- 10:42Speaker 2: it's not always available to you. Your breathing is always
- 10:44Speaker 2: available to you.
- 10:45Speaker 3: Amen.
- 10:45Speaker 2: You can do that any time.
- 10:47Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean, even just you reminding me to breathe
- 10:50Speaker 1: in and out through my nose, that simple reminder, it
- 10:55Speaker 1: just feels good. It just feels better. It's just like, yeah,
- 10:59Speaker 1: no one's reminded me of that probably ever in my life.
- 11:01Speaker 1: It just doesn't happen.
