- 0:52Speaker 6: were you doing in December nineteen sixty three? What'd you
- 0:55Speaker 6: get for Christmas that year?
- 0:56Speaker 1: Probably not something that I didn't want. I didn't get
- 0:59Speaker 1: what I want. I know this is going to surprise people,
- 1:03Speaker 1: but back in fifty.
- 1:05Speaker 7: Three, sixty three, sixty three, that too, sixty three, some
- 1:10Speaker 7: people thought I was a little bit of a smart ass,
- 1:12Speaker 7: you know, And I know that's hard to believe, but
- 1:14Speaker 7: you know, just no way always said to be better
- 1:17Speaker 7: a smart one than a dumb one, and they said
- 1:19Speaker 7: I've done that as well.
- 1:20Speaker 8: So hey, I could kind of have to be to
- 1:22Speaker 8: survive on this show.
- 1:23Speaker 1: Yeah, this show, you know, come on, I'm trying to
- 1:24Speaker 1: follow Louis and Chip and gone back to the Hall
- 1:29Speaker 1: of famers. Scott the scotsman, I mean, come on, nobody
- 1:36Speaker 1: was better than him, even though you just retired recently.
- 1:39Speaker 1: But hey, glad to be on the air, and you
- 1:42Speaker 1: could be on the air as well. Like I said,
- 1:45Speaker 1: We're gonna do a little couple of things here. We
- 1:47Speaker 1: did get some email Texas if you want to Texas
- 1:50Speaker 1: sixty nine three eleven fifty pound eleven fifty or whatever,
- 1:54Speaker 1: sick notes nine nine nine three eleven fifty. That's you
- 1:57Speaker 1: want to text that. If you want to call, you
- 1:58Speaker 1: could call that same number. Chris Riley's falling asleep out
- 2:03Speaker 1: there and standon, man who is trying to learn. You
- 2:06Speaker 1: got to learn. Wake up the girl that's taken the
- 2:09Speaker 1: calls in case they fall asleep. And then we got
- 2:12Speaker 1: Religious Caleb on the board with us and read we
- 2:17Speaker 1: did get a text.
- 2:19Speaker 8: Yeah, so Chris in Somerville says what's up cease? I'm
- 2:23Speaker 8: Brian High class of ninety three. What happened to Brian
- 2:25Speaker 8: High athletics?
- 2:28Speaker 1: Well, thanks for listening, Chris, and congratulations on being class
- 2:32Speaker 1: of ninety three. Wow, you're you're getting up there as well.
- 2:35Speaker 1: I'm sure you're well established there in Somerls. That's a
- 2:38Speaker 1: good deal. Like a lot of things, the landscape changes
- 2:42Speaker 1: when you look at Rudder coming in. Eventually A and
- 2:47Speaker 1: M has been mean, A and M s. It's so
- 2:48Speaker 1: tough to fight stupid habits. Brian is basically what I
- 2:53Speaker 1: feel the last decade or so fighting the numbers. You know,
- 2:56Speaker 1: you've got to go ahead and the numbers have to
- 2:59Speaker 1: be in your favor, and the numbers haven't been in
- 3:02Speaker 1: and they don't have enough athletes, So you look at
- 3:04Speaker 1: numbers don't work for you, you don't have enough athletes. You
- 3:08Speaker 1: think about how good they were in softball for decades.
- 3:12Speaker 1: And I went out and covered I want to say,
- 3:15Speaker 1: a season opener last year and they played Rudder and
- 3:17Speaker 1: it was it was bad softball, it was. And you know,
- 3:21Speaker 1: you look at football zero to ten. I my wife
- 3:25Speaker 1: can attest to this. I love I love high school football.
- 3:30Speaker 1: Nothing to me is better than going out and see
- 3:34Speaker 1: a high school football playoff game between two towns or
- 3:39Speaker 1: two communities, because we have so much spread anymore, where
- 3:43Speaker 1: they love their pride and the two communities gone at it.
- 3:49Speaker 9: Uh.
- 3:49Speaker 1: You know, if you give me example, you can go
- 3:51Speaker 1: to West Texas, you can go a lot of places.
- 3:53Speaker 1: You can go in Houston. I don't care they're they're there,
- 3:55Speaker 1: those are that's just great football. What's happened is I
- 3:59Speaker 1: always my wife, I never want to see a team
- 4:02Speaker 1: go oh and ten. It has to be one of
- 4:04Speaker 1: the worst things in the world because I'm old enough
- 4:08Speaker 1: now when you've got I don't care what level of
- 4:12Speaker 1: football you're in. It takes a lot of players to
- 4:14Speaker 1: make a team. And that's a lot of Friday nights
- 4:18Speaker 1: when you go home and if your parents weren't able
- 4:20Speaker 1: to go to the game because they're working or whatever,
- 4:23Speaker 1: or that night or later that day, that I'd probably
- 4:25Speaker 1: be at the game. The parents lose with you, and
- 4:29Speaker 1: they try to say you did the best you could, son,
- 4:32Speaker 1: But when you've got an zero to ten to deal with,
- 4:36Speaker 1: I sympathize with all those players in their family because
- 4:40Speaker 1: there's so much you could do to get in trouble
- 4:42Speaker 1: and be a jerk and do you're out there football?
- 4:46Speaker 1: I never played football, and uh, football to me is
- 4:49Speaker 1: one of the ultimate team players. When I get to
- 4:51Speaker 1: know the coaches, when I get to know the players,
- 4:54Speaker 1: you need. If you're in three eight and you got
- 4:58Speaker 1: forty eight players, some of those players in the forties,
- 5:02Speaker 1: better contribute that year. You're not going to be good.
- 5:05Speaker 1: You gotta have everybody step up. Why College Station come
- 5:09Speaker 1: in and win because they got My son was on
- 5:12Speaker 1: College Station because because of because of number one to
- 5:18Speaker 1: number forty, they all contributed to consolidated whise. I can remember, Chris,
- 5:23Speaker 1: thanks for the text, but I can remember when Console
- 5:27Speaker 1: was called conslopidated.
- 5:29Speaker 6: So my dad was in high school and when.
- 5:31Speaker 1: I first got here, you couldn't meet better people than
- 5:38Speaker 1: Jack Churchill, James Geezy, the track coach, you know, Drew Blanks,
- 5:48Speaker 1: I get old. But the longtime girls basketball coach, Sue Kennedy, Uh,
- 5:55Speaker 1: you know, I'm just Sue that sort of but great coaches.
- 5:58Speaker 1: But they didn't have enough fleets. And they did. They
- 6:01Speaker 1: come on, they Keip Corey. They had some good athletes,
- 6:03Speaker 1: but they didn't have enough Bob Casky whatever, conslopidated, and
- 6:09Speaker 1: but then Ross Rogers came along. They got the numbers.
- 6:12Speaker 1: They were the best in the state and for a
- 6:14Speaker 1: one of the best. Brian and Curtis Dickey in the seventies.
- 6:18Speaker 1: Whatever you think about the Gerald Carter uh the they
- 6:21Speaker 1: won two state championships in basketball. You're not gonna win
- 6:24Speaker 1: without talent coaching. In softball, I mean, I mean in
- 6:28Speaker 1: uh high school, you gotta have numbers. And suddenly you're
- 6:31Speaker 1: you're getting these new communities starting like College Station and
- 6:36Speaker 1: what do you see a great rivalry college Station and consolidate.
- 6:39Speaker 1: I hate, I hate the towns are split, but that's
- 6:42Speaker 1: the way life goes now. And Console gets something, college
- 6:45Speaker 1: Station gets something, Console wins, College Station wants to win.
- 6:49Speaker 1: That's what it's about. Brian and Rutter. I feel for them.
- 6:52Speaker 1: They don't have the numbers, they don't have enough athletes,
- 6:54Speaker 1: and how do you do that? How do you get that? Well,
- 6:57Speaker 1: you gotta have it, got a start at the top.
- 6:59Speaker 1: What do you got to do? And I don't care
- 7:02Speaker 1: what you do? Why is A? Why is A? And
- 7:05Speaker 1: m went under Mike Calco and they don't win under
- 7:06Speaker 1: Jimbo Fisher, not with the way they did. It's it's
- 7:09Speaker 1: a lot of things. And if everybody could win, they
- 7:12Speaker 1: would they can't.
- 7:14Speaker 6: Well, And you know, I was in school at a
- 7:17Speaker 6: time when all four locals were in the same district
- 7:21Speaker 6: and that was the best of the best. You had it.
- 7:25Speaker 6: You had it pretty made. All three of the four
- 7:28Speaker 6: were very competitive, split district championships two years in a row.
- 7:33Speaker 6: And you know, one of the one of the best
- 7:37Speaker 6: players at that time was Brian running back Keikey Johnson.
- 7:40Speaker 6: He was he was a man among boys. You did
- 7:44Speaker 6: not want to meet him in the hole. Uh. And
- 7:48Speaker 6: you know, my buddy Andrew, he'll still mention to this day, Hey,
- 7:52Speaker 6: what was my record? What was Brian's record against you?
- 7:55Speaker 6: By the way, you know, those are the things that matter,
- 7:59Speaker 6: right right, and so you know it's tough and and
- 8:05Speaker 6: what was tough too was you know, Brian's enrollment went down.
- 8:09Speaker 6: And the crummy part though, was that the UIL cutoff
- 8:14Speaker 6: went down even further. Had Brian turned in the enrollment
- 8:18Speaker 6: they did this cycle for the realignment, they would have
- 8:20Speaker 6: been in five A Division one, they would have been
- 8:22Speaker 6: in the same district as and of consolidated college station
- 8:26Speaker 6: and that that would have been a lot of fun.
- 8:28Speaker 6: That would have been a lot of fun. But you know,
- 8:31Speaker 6: that's a that's an onion that has a lot of
- 8:33Speaker 6: layers to it. But the fact of the matter is
- 8:36Speaker 6: that Brian's one of the smallest six A schools and
- 8:42Speaker 6: it's hard to compete. And you know it's tough too
- 8:44Speaker 6: because you look at that twelve six A. Okay, you
- 8:48Speaker 6: make the playoffs, well, congratulations, you get to go play Duncanville. Right.
- 8:53Speaker 6: I can remember the last time Brian played in the
- 8:55Speaker 6: playoff game. They went and played Duncanville and it was
- 8:58Speaker 6: not very pretty. And so it's tough, and you talk
- 9:03Speaker 6: about numbers, it is numbers. And then it's unfortunate because
- 9:08Speaker 6: Brian has had a storied history. And the good thing
- 9:11Speaker 6: is there's always hope of next year. And what do
- 9:15Speaker 6: we got tomorrow? Ces We got our High School Football
- 9:18Speaker 6: Media Day, twelfth annual and Brian High once again their
- 9:22Speaker 6: gracious hosts at the field house and Blake Joseph and alumnus.
- 9:27Speaker 6: It's his first year as head coach, and I think
- 9:29Speaker 6: we're all curious to see what the Vikings have in
- 9:31Speaker 6: store this year.
- 9:32Speaker 1: Hope spring's eternal, because you know, where is the turning
- 9:37Speaker 1: point and the beauty of our high school media day
- 9:42Speaker 1: is Bremont comes in Rockdale, comes in Madisonville, Novasota. And
- 9:47Speaker 1: over the years, we've seen Bremont have a three state
- 9:52Speaker 1: state championships. We've seen Franklin win state championships. That one
- 9:58Speaker 1: year we had three T teams playing in state championships, Cameron,
- 10:04Speaker 1: Ramon and Franklin that one year. But Rockdale's also one state.
- 10:10Speaker 1: But it can be done. But like I said, is
- 10:14Speaker 1: you could say why hasn't Caldwell won recently? You could
- 10:17Speaker 1: say why hasn't you know, it's tough. It's tough because
- 10:21Speaker 1: you got to get everybody and on the same page.
- 10:24Speaker 1: You got to have the community. What does the community want?
- 10:28Speaker 1: Because I know Blake Josephs, but I hear he's out
- 10:32Speaker 1: trying to get athletes, He's trying to get got kids
- 10:34Speaker 1: out of the out of the classroom. Because here's the deal, gang,
- 10:39Speaker 1: you want to go out and I make jokes of
- 10:41Speaker 1: one hundred degree temperatures, You want to go out and
- 10:43Speaker 1: practice for a team that was zero to ten last year?
- 10:46Speaker 1: Or maybe you want to go ahead, hang out or
- 10:49Speaker 1: just stay at the house, get on the internet, Facebook,
- 10:52Speaker 1: what have you. Once again, I admire the people out
- 10:55Speaker 1: there sweating to try to make a team to win.
- 11:00Speaker 1: And that's and Chris, obviously you were part of a
- 11:04Speaker 1: time when they won. Like I said, Brian won a
- 11:06Speaker 1: couple state championships back to back with basketball with Keller,
- 11:11Speaker 1: and you think of Bernstein and all that crew they had,
- 11:15Speaker 1: and they had all those good football teams, they weren't
- 11:18Speaker 1: able quite to put it together. And you think when
- 11:20Speaker 1: Ross Rogers came in and like Alex said, they had
- 11:23Speaker 1: the great back to back years with Johnson and others.
- 11:27Speaker 1: You gotta have a great coach, which we've seen a
- 11:29Speaker 1: lot of great high school coaches in this area. Oh
- 11:32Speaker 1: my gosh when you think of the head ricks and
- 11:34Speaker 1: you know, I don't want to I'll start leaving people out,
- 11:38Speaker 1: but there are so many of them. And I'm a
- 11:41Speaker 1: firm believer in high school sports because Nick Saban wouldn't
- 11:46Speaker 1: be successful if he didn't have all these prep all
- 11:49Speaker 1: Americans that were at some dang good high school programs
- 11:53Speaker 1: that produced them and made them men. And they were
- 11:57Speaker 1: good boys and then they go to college and make
- 12:00Speaker 1: a man. Football is a team sports.
- 12:03Speaker 6: Speaking of prep standouts and Brian High I was really
- 12:07Speaker 6: sad to hear that Nick Gorton tore his ACL last week.
- 12:11Speaker 6: I mean, he he had a pretty solid rookie campaign
- 12:14Speaker 6: with the Panthers and by all accounts, it seemed like
- 12:17Speaker 6: he was primed for a pretty big season in year
- 12:20Speaker 6: two and just first day of practice torn ACL. That
- 12:25Speaker 6: just sucks. And in Nick's such a fantastic story. I mean,
- 12:29Speaker 6: you talk about guys that we covered him in high school,
- 12:32Speaker 6: we talked about Russo earlier. I mean, we can we
- 12:35Speaker 6: can go back and think about the time when you know,
- 12:38Speaker 6: Nick was kind of this guy that he was being recruited,
- 12:41Speaker 6: but like running running back, linebacker, he was kind of
- 12:45Speaker 6: all over the place. He signs with Purdue and then
- 12:48Speaker 6: all of a sudden he's leading the Big Ten Conference
- 12:50Speaker 6: in sacks, and then he comes to A and M.
- 12:52Speaker 6: And but you know, good news is Nick's got a
- 12:56Speaker 6: lot of football ahead of him, and I'm sure the
- 13:00Speaker 6: Panthers are going to make sure that he gets right
- 13:02Speaker 6: because he's a talented dude, and so I'm hoping he
- 13:05Speaker 6: gets a good recovery.
- 13:06Speaker 1: Yeah, it's funny you should mention that, because, like you said,
- 13:08Speaker 1: we run into our co arts around at media days.
- 13:12Speaker 1: And of course some people think I'm older than you,
- 13:15Speaker 1: for example, a lot older people. And I was talking
- 13:17Speaker 1: to one guy and he asked me about staying at
- 13:19Speaker 1: one place that long. He goes, that's going to be
- 13:22Speaker 1: pretty nice. I said, well, you know, not only am
- 13:24Speaker 1: I covering kids of players, I'm covering now grandchildren of
- 13:29Speaker 1: players that I saw. And uh, Nick Gorton is a
- 13:33Speaker 1: good example. I wasn't covering high school's full time that time,
- 13:36Speaker 1: but his senior year I had to go out to
- 13:38Speaker 1: their signing a deal, and I remember talking to him vividly,
- 13:41Speaker 1: and Ross says, this is the guy you need to
- 13:43Speaker 1: talk to a and m should have should have signed him.
- 13:46Speaker 1: You know you're gonna you know right about him, and
- 13:49Speaker 1: you know, you know it is as you get older,
- 13:50Speaker 1: you get a little skeptical. And h Ross knows what
- 13:54Speaker 1: he's talking about. And I'm thinking, well, we'll see if Nick,
- 13:57Speaker 1: and at that time his name wasn't Scorton, Nick Carraway.
- 14:01Speaker 1: I said, well we'll see, And like you said, he
- 14:03Speaker 1: goes up and tears it and he was able to
- 14:06Speaker 1: get a great anil deal. He's he made money by
- 14:08Speaker 1: going up and proving who he was. And once again,
- 14:12Speaker 1: is high school sports, whether it's any sports, softball, whatever,
- 14:16Speaker 1: you prove yourself, you're gonna be make some money and
- 14:21Speaker 1: make a name for yourself. But it is nice to
- 14:23Speaker 1: watch these kids over the years. I did see Rod Bernstein.
- 14:28Speaker 1: I always have to laugh people when I first met
- 14:32Speaker 1: Kip Corrington and that's maybe that's that's name's too old
- 14:35Speaker 1: for you guys. He was a pretty good safety at
- 14:38Speaker 1: Texas A and M. But I was playing with my
- 14:42Speaker 1: boss at the time, was the sports eder, Joe Kamla,
- 14:45Speaker 1: and Kip Corrington was out at the A and M
- 14:48Speaker 1: golf course. He was twelve years old and he said,
- 14:50Speaker 1: could I play along with you guys? And of course
- 14:52Speaker 1: he could beat us at age twelve, and then of
- 14:54Speaker 1: course he went on to be such a great athlete.
- 14:56Speaker 1: And you just laugh about the beauty of living in
- 14:59Speaker 1: assault community and seeing these kids and absolutely absolutely phenomenal. Uh,
- 15:07Speaker 1: we need to take a break right now. We're okay,
- 15:09Speaker 1: We're okay for talking, aren't we. Yeah, let's talk about
- 15:12Speaker 1: the Big ten media days.
- 15:14Speaker 6: Uh.
- 15:14Speaker 1: Big ten's going on, Alex. I don't know if you
- 15:16Speaker 1: noticed this there three days in Chicago. Had to laugh.
- 15:21Speaker 1: They're doing six teams a day, so they get it
- 15:25Speaker 1: done in three days, as opposed to the SEC doing four,
- 15:33Speaker 1: four and four. You know, they got eighteen. I'm thinking,
- 15:35Speaker 1: oh my gosh, that would that be a beatdown?
- 15:38Speaker 10: Or what?
- 15:39Speaker 6: Well six and three or four over four? You get
- 15:45Speaker 6: to that Thursday at SEC Media Days, and especially I
- 15:48Speaker 6: think we were feeling it because A and M went
- 15:50Speaker 6: on Wednesday, and so that was that. That's that's showtime,
- 15:54Speaker 6: and it's a long week. But the good thing is
- 15:58Speaker 6: it's so spread out that you feel like you do
- 16:01Speaker 6: have actually you actually have ample time to write and
- 16:05Speaker 6: not feel completely rushed and try and get a coherent
- 16:10Speaker 6: thought together here and there. The big news today though,
- 16:16Speaker 6: is that, look, the SEC and the Big ten, they're
- 16:20Speaker 6: in negotiations with lawmakers over the Protect College Sports Act,
- 16:24Speaker 6: and you look at some of the national reports, sounds
- 16:28Speaker 6: like they've gotten till nine am Wednesday morning to basically
- 16:32Speaker 6: give their vote of approval. And so there's a lot
- 16:36Speaker 6: at stake with this act, and it's not even guaranteed
- 16:40Speaker 6: that it's going to get to the Senate floor for
- 16:42Speaker 6: a vote, and even if it does, then it's got
- 16:45Speaker 6: a long way to go from there. But you know,
- 16:48Speaker 6: this is probably This is probably as far along as
- 16:52Speaker 6: something's gotten when it comes to federal legislation and college athletics.
- 16:56Speaker 6: And it's something that you know, the the conferences, university officials,
- 17:02Speaker 6: they've been they've been up in DC lobbying for this
- 17:04Speaker 6: stuff for years. And it's something that anytime you have
- 17:09Speaker 6: media days, you got coaches and administrators saying we need,
- 17:13Speaker 6: we need, we need these guardrails, we need, we need
- 17:16Speaker 6: like federal coverage, and and it just hasn't happened.
- 17:21Speaker 1: Right.
- 17:22Speaker 6: Uh So I'm really curious to see what comes a
- 17:25Speaker 6: bit and uh if this actually gets moving forward, and
- 17:29Speaker 6: if it doesn't, then where do they go from here?
- 17:32Speaker 1: Yeah, you're right, because last thing I was reading last week,
- 17:36Speaker 1: all the sources are saying they were betting it wasn't
- 17:38Speaker 1: gonna get done. And you're right, the deadline is tomorrow
- 17:40Speaker 1: and we don't know.
- 17:41Speaker 6: Because on how hard is that deadline?
- 17:43Speaker 1: Yeah? Yeah, and we've heard you know, last week I
- 17:47Speaker 1: read a lot of reports said that the sources told
- 17:50Speaker 1: at ESPN whatever it wasn't gonna happen. But then Sankie said,
- 17:55Speaker 1: you know, things can be worked out at the last minute.
- 17:57Speaker 1: You know, you never know really what's going on. Uh,
- 18:00Speaker 1: but but we know this, it hasn't happened.
- 18:03Speaker 6: Something that stood out to me though, with what Sankie
- 18:06Speaker 6: said last week. He made it pretty clear in his mind,
- 18:09Speaker 6: there's one shot at doing this, and once it gets
- 18:12Speaker 6: once this stuff gets codified, it's not like they're going
- 18:15Speaker 6: to go back to d C and be able to
- 18:17Speaker 6: change all of it. So I think the SEC is
- 18:20Speaker 6: only going to give the thumbs up if what's in that,
- 18:23Speaker 6: what's in the language of the bill matches up with
- 18:26Speaker 6: more or less what they want, because they it's kind
- 18:31Speaker 6: of it's kind of the one bullet deal here.
- 18:34Speaker 1: I I like that, and I don't like that because
- 18:37Speaker 1: can the SEC survive on it. Of course it could.
- 18:40Speaker 1: I mean SEC so is powerful when you look at
- 18:43Speaker 1: all sports. I mean, oh my gosh, we could just said.
- 18:46Speaker 1: I could talk for four hours about how great this
- 18:49Speaker 1: conference is. But you need more, you need more people
- 18:52Speaker 1: to play, you need you need more sports, you need
- 18:54Speaker 1: more things. And I think for them taking their ball
- 18:58Speaker 1: and go home in the long run wouldn't be great.
- 19:01Speaker 6: See I'm I'm an I'm in the camp of I
- 19:05Speaker 6: don't know if the SEC would completely break away. I
- 19:09Speaker 6: think it would be maybe a partial breakaway where where
- 19:14Speaker 6: the SEC and maybe the Big ten. They they're still
- 19:18Speaker 6: part of the n c Double A and they you know,
- 19:20Speaker 6: they're still gonna be in the March Madness n CUAA Tournament.
- 19:23Speaker 6: They're still gonna compete for the College World Series, go
- 19:25Speaker 6: to Oklahoma City, go to Omaha.
- 19:27Speaker 4: Uh.
- 19:28Speaker 6: But maybe maybe there are guardrails that they can do
- 19:31Speaker 6: on their own. If they could do that, if they
- 19:33Speaker 6: could do that.
- 19:33Speaker 1: They could do that.
- 19:34Speaker 6: I don't know how exactly that all shakes out, but
- 19:39Speaker 6: I think that maybe that's I don't know, if it's
- 19:42Speaker 6: a complete breakaway. I don't know. I just I'm not
- 19:45Speaker 6: I'm not fully convinced on that. Could they do it, sure,
- 19:48Speaker 6: but I'm not convinced on it. But I haven't really
- 19:51Speaker 6: you know, thought through all of it. You don't. You
- 19:54Speaker 6: don't want to get the you don't want to go
- 19:55Speaker 6: to assume land on things and just start going down
- 19:58Speaker 6: rabbit holes thinking what could be.
- 20:00Speaker 1: I don't know what's going to be. I don't even
- 20:04Speaker 1: know what should be. I firmly believe they can't go
- 20:09Speaker 1: the path they're on. I think eventually there's going to
- 20:12Speaker 1: be problems. When you look at the money, the way
- 20:15Speaker 1: it's distributed, the nil deals, the transfer portal. I just
- 20:21Speaker 1: don't think they can continue to go this way now.
- 20:25Speaker 1: Like I said, that being said is when you look
- 20:28Speaker 1: at all the money being thrown around, and I just
- 20:30Speaker 1: want to talk to you because I know you're a
- 20:32Speaker 1: big guy in the uniforms and all this. Ohio State
- 20:37Speaker 1: struck a partnership with JP Morgan Chase Chase Bank logo
- 20:43Speaker 1: on all the jerseys of thirty six varsity sports, worth
- 20:49Speaker 1: more than fifteen million a year just for a patch.
- 20:53Speaker 6: It's pretty good.
- 20:55Speaker 1: And of course that's all sports, so everybody gets their
- 20:58Speaker 1: hands in it, whether it's water, pistol or whatever ross
- 21:01Speaker 1: sports up there. But think about this, that's a lot
- 21:03Speaker 1: of money.
- 21:03Speaker 6: Think about this. I'd be curious to know the number
- 21:07Speaker 6: of Division one schools whose total athletic budget is seventeen
- 21:13Speaker 6: million dollars or less. Good point, I bet it's a
- 21:16Speaker 6: pretty good percentage. I bet it's a pretty good percentage.
- 21:19Speaker 6: And uh look, Ohio State, it's one of the best
- 21:23Speaker 6: brands in all of college sports. All right, name name
- 21:27Speaker 6: schools that have a bigger and better brand than Ohio State.
- 21:31Speaker 6: The list is pretty short.
- 21:34Speaker 8: So Notre Dame just also announced the Jersey Patch sponsorship.
- 21:38Speaker 8: I saw it was so fine, even more than the
- 21:40Speaker 8: Ohio state. It's eighteen to twenty million dollars.
- 21:43Speaker 1: They top the highest SAT. Of course, they did well
- 21:46Speaker 1: in Notre Dame.
- 21:46Speaker 8: It's like I think it was about an hour after.
- 21:48Speaker 1: Is that all their sports or.
- 21:51Speaker 6: It says Notre Dame athletics so well, and Notre Dame
- 21:55Speaker 6: would probably be on the list of that would be
- 21:57Speaker 6: on the short list of teams that are schools that
- 21:59Speaker 6: I would probably see.
- 22:00Speaker 1: Who else USC? What about USC? I don't think so.
- 22:04Speaker 1: I don't know.
- 22:04Speaker 6: Maybe Texas is probably in the mix. Tax's is probably
- 22:09Speaker 6: in the mix. About Oklahoma, I don't know about Oklahoma.
- 22:13Speaker 1: I don't either see I'm just out because I don't
- 22:15Speaker 1: I don't think I put Oklahoma on there.
- 22:17Speaker 6: I would think that Notre Dame in Texas are probably
- 22:20Speaker 6: the only two. That's what I would say. That's what
- 22:23Speaker 6: I would say, uh alaema, no, okay, no way. My
- 22:29Speaker 6: question now is I think it's inevitable that A and
- 22:33Speaker 6: M will do this. Eventually, the question becomes who does
- 22:38Speaker 6: AM partner with and what's A and M's value? Because
- 22:41Speaker 6: A M's probably in the top twenty.
- 22:44Speaker 1: They're probably working on some kind of deal.
- 22:46Speaker 6: They're probably working on some kind of deal, and they're
- 22:47Speaker 6: probably in the top twenty. I don't know if they're
- 22:49Speaker 6: top five, top ten.
- 22:51Speaker 1: But okay, am I am. I naive, Alex, but I
- 22:55Speaker 1: think if someone would work a deal with A and
- 22:58Speaker 1: M where A is right now, we just talked about
- 23:01Speaker 1: how good volleyball is, women's tennis has done good, men's
- 23:04Speaker 1: basketball is improvement, softball's.
- 23:06Speaker 6: Good baseball is Typically, wouldn't you get.
- 23:10Speaker 1: A steal if you're a company that you could work
- 23:12Speaker 1: when we're I'm not saying these kinds of money, but
- 23:15Speaker 1: maybe that's why A and M's holding up. But I
- 23:17Speaker 1: think if I'm some kind of whatever business and I
- 23:21Speaker 1: could tie A and M in, I think A M's
- 23:23Speaker 1: going up.
- 23:23Speaker 5: Now.
- 23:24Speaker 1: I might be wrong, but I think you want to
- 23:26Speaker 1: buy low and get more for your buck. I think
- 23:29Speaker 1: invested in A and M would be really good.
- 23:32Speaker 6: I definitely think it would. And you know, I'm thinking
- 23:36Speaker 6: about what are some of the big Texas based companies are.
- 23:40Speaker 6: What are companies that are owned by Aggie's that that
- 23:44Speaker 6: A and M could be a part of We talked
- 23:47Speaker 6: about in the office. Be great to see a Bucky's
- 23:51Speaker 6: logo on on the A and M jersey. But I
- 23:53Speaker 6: just don't think that's realistic because by all accounts, Beaver Applin,
- 23:59Speaker 6: he's done business with A and M, and he's probably
- 24:02Speaker 6: had ample opportunity to do things with A and M
- 24:05Speaker 6: athletics and maybe forward facing, maybe behind the scenes he has,
- 24:09Speaker 6: but it hasn't been necessarily forward facing with athletics. They're
- 24:12Speaker 6: building that entrepreneurship building on A and M's campus. But
- 24:16Speaker 6: I just I don't I don't think that's gonna be
- 24:18Speaker 6: I don't think that's gonna happen. I also don't think
- 24:21Speaker 6: something like Waterburger is gonna happen because I don't think
- 24:23Speaker 6: AM is gonna put an orange logo on a maroon jersey.
- 24:26Speaker 6: I just don't think that's gonna fly. Uh Now, somebody
- 24:29Speaker 6: did point out that, you know, Ohio State they just
- 24:33Speaker 6: struck a deal with Chase. They're gonna have the Chase logo.
- 24:36Speaker 6: Chase's logo is blue, and who's Ohio State's main rival.
- 24:40Speaker 6: It's Michigan in blue. But if you look at the jersey,
- 24:43Speaker 6: Chase is doing like a special scarlet logo on the
- 24:48Speaker 6: Ohio State uniform. So it's would would Waburger do a maroon.
- 24:53Speaker 1: They put maroon instead of oranges? They put them.
- 24:55Speaker 6: They put the maroon strike here on the on the
- 24:58Speaker 6: on the restaurant. So maybe maybe. But you know, think
- 25:03Speaker 6: about some of the big the oil companies that are
- 25:06Speaker 6: based out of Houston. You know, something like Southwest Airlines
- 25:10Speaker 6: or American Airlines is based up in Dallas, right at
- 25:14Speaker 6: and T is based up in Dallas. Elon's got all
- 25:17Speaker 6: kinds of things here in Texas.
- 25:19Speaker 1: We would be great.
- 25:20Speaker 6: I mean, he's build a thing in the backyard of
- 25:23Speaker 6: in Grimes County.
- 25:24Speaker 1: So I'd go for Elon. I'd go I'd go at
- 25:26Speaker 1: the top and work my way down right. I mean,
- 25:28Speaker 1: come on, let's be honest.
- 25:28Speaker 6: I mean, could you imagine if Tesla's on a and
- 25:31Speaker 6: in Jersey?
- 25:33Speaker 1: Does the media get those cars too? I mean, it's
- 25:36Speaker 1: just coverable. What about I know, did you see a
- 25:39Speaker 1: lot of new uniforms this year? A lot of teams
- 25:41Speaker 1: going to what And I know you're a uniform guy
- 25:43Speaker 1: and these kids today, Oh do I need to take
- 25:46Speaker 1: a break first there? Because like I said, we'll talk
- 25:48Speaker 1: about uniforms. We'll get back.

- 29:17Speaker 1: into toilet. What can I say? Welcome back? Chip Hower's
- 29:22Speaker 1: not here. You find you've been listening. It's been over
- 29:24Speaker 1: an hour. Robert Sesta, along with Alex Miller the Ego Cards,
- 29:30Speaker 1: got a call from one of my sources saying the
- 29:33Speaker 1: anim men's basketball teams looking really good. I said, I'll
- 29:38Speaker 1: keep them between us, so we took the break. I
- 29:44Speaker 1: know you're big in the uniforms, Alex uh and I
- 29:47Speaker 1: saw that there's like a dozen you know, I'm sure
- 29:50Speaker 1: a lot of schools change their uniforms and no one
- 29:53Speaker 1: cares until the opening not day because they don't get
- 29:56Speaker 1: any kind of money. But I saw some of these
- 29:59Speaker 1: and one of them's new Nebraska.
- 30:01Speaker 4: Uh.
- 30:02Speaker 1: Whose uniforms do you like right now? Besides A and M?
- 30:05Speaker 1: Since a m's out of the out of the loop,
- 30:07Speaker 1: you cover A and M. So I'm not gonna throw
- 30:10Speaker 1: either one of us underneath the.
- 30:11Speaker 6: Bush that's got like kind of a different look.
- 30:15Speaker 1: Yeah, any any uniform jumps out at you.
- 30:17Speaker 6: No, I feel like a lot of the SEC teams
- 30:21Speaker 6: they keep it real simple. You think about Alabama, Alabama's
- 30:25Speaker 6: gonna have the most simple Jersey.
- 30:28Speaker 1: Penn State they redid their They redid their saying to
- 30:31Speaker 1: redid their uniforms. It's one thing. I went to it
- 30:32Speaker 1: because I love Penn State's uniforms. And then the guy said,
- 30:35Speaker 1: it's pretty funny is they've they've changed them. But what
- 30:38Speaker 1: they've done is they've really not changed them. And I
- 30:41Speaker 1: love that is So that is so Penn State. You
- 30:44Speaker 1: know they're not gonna they're not gonna change it. But Ohio,
- 30:46Speaker 1: they got Ohio State, Notre Dame down.
- 30:48Speaker 4: Uh.
- 30:50Speaker 1: They said that the new uniforms basically it will look
- 30:53Speaker 1: like the old ones and Penn State deal from Nike
- 30:57Speaker 1: to Adidas is worth three hundred million over the next
- 31:01Speaker 1: thirty million a year. I'll change my uniforse with Okay.
- 31:04Speaker 6: Someone who I think does a good job with changing
- 31:08Speaker 6: up looks Missouri. I think they do a really good job.
- 31:14Speaker 6: It seems like every week they've got some different combination
- 31:16Speaker 6: and then you know they've they've got they've got a
- 31:19Speaker 6: different helmet decal with a different helmet color. It seems
- 31:23Speaker 6: like every week they've got, you know, the traditional tiger.
- 31:27Speaker 6: I think the block m looks good. They've got the
- 31:31Speaker 6: old school kind of cartoony tiger with the sailor's hat.
- 31:35Speaker 6: I think they do a good job. And I've always
- 31:39Speaker 6: thought that black and Gold.
- 31:41Speaker 1: Looks pretty good.
- 31:42Speaker 6: It looks good. It's hard to mess up black.
- 31:43Speaker 1: And Gold said. Notre Dame's bringing back their Shamrock series
- 31:48Speaker 1: this season and the opener against Wisconsin. The thing I
- 31:54Speaker 1: don't like about going back to retros, like when the
- 31:56Speaker 1: Pirates do it and my Steelers do it, they look
- 31:59Speaker 1: after horrible. It's like, luckily we've moved forward from that.
- 32:03Speaker 1: Sometimes when we go back to I know they're just
- 32:05Speaker 1: trying to sell uniforms to young kids that's never seen them.
- 32:09Speaker 1: Why go back to something that didn't workly work?
- 32:11Speaker 6: So we mentioned the red, White, and Blue game earlier
- 32:14Speaker 6: on the show. I'm curious A A and M. In
- 32:18Speaker 6: the past, they've they've done it where they'll wear a
- 32:21Speaker 6: white helmet with kind of an American flag decal ATM logo.
- 32:26Speaker 6: I'm curious if they'll do that for that game.
- 32:29Speaker 10: Now.
- 32:29Speaker 6: The thing that I'm curious about now that we're talking
- 32:32Speaker 6: about it is what is A and M's alternative uniform
- 32:36Speaker 6: going to be this season? They brought in the black
- 32:40Speaker 6: uniforms again. And if you go back and you remember,
- 32:45Speaker 6: Mike Elko last season told us that this year's alternative
- 32:50Speaker 6: uniforms this was the first one that he had his
- 32:53Speaker 6: hand in. And so what's that going to be? I
- 32:58Speaker 6: have no inside knowledge. This is just Alex guessing.
- 33:01Speaker 1: Alex Miller.
- 33:02Speaker 6: Okay, uh. What's something that Elko's really gravitated toward during
- 33:08Speaker 6: his time at A and M. It's the old Sarge
- 33:12Speaker 6: logo he brought. He brought in the old Starge logo.
- 33:16Speaker 6: I'm curious if they'll do an old Sarge logo on
- 33:21Speaker 6: the helmet. Interesting that that that is something that I'm
- 33:24Speaker 6: curious about. I don't have any I don't have any
- 33:27Speaker 6: inside knowledge and so, but that's something that Elko seems
- 33:31Speaker 6: to really like. And if he's got his fingers on it,
- 33:35Speaker 6: is that something that they go toward. I'm just curious.
- 33:38Speaker 6: I'm just curious.
- 33:39Speaker 1: That's funny you should mention that because I have the
- 33:40Speaker 1: laugh gone way back in the old days. I can
- 33:43Speaker 1: remember when A and M won certain big games, those
- 33:47Speaker 1: of Bob would come down and go put put the
- 33:49Speaker 1: put the old Sarge logo on the paper, whether on
- 33:52Speaker 1: the cover or on sports you know that you're right.
- 33:55Speaker 1: Sarge was a big winner. He didn't throw them out
- 33:58Speaker 1: there all the time. And I'm probably gone back forty
- 34:02Speaker 1: years fifty bring old Sergeant.
- 34:04Speaker 6: The script agis has been a hit. It seems like
- 34:09Speaker 6: every sports team that a M has has done some
- 34:12Speaker 6: form of the script aggies and it's been it's been
- 34:16Speaker 6: a huge success. And I thought it looked really good
- 34:19Speaker 6: on aem's helmets the last couple of years, whether they
- 34:21Speaker 6: did it with the blackout game or they had the
- 34:24Speaker 6: white uniforms against Notre Dame last year where they had
- 34:27Speaker 6: the script aggies on that helmet decal. Uh, that that's
- 34:30Speaker 6: been a good one. And I think what's good about
- 34:34Speaker 6: A and M is aam's got good traditional uniforms. But
- 34:39Speaker 6: I think they've done it right where once a year
- 34:41Speaker 6: they kind of change it up, but it's not it's
- 34:44Speaker 6: not overtly flashy that it's just like what are they doing?
- 34:48Speaker 6: Like this just doesn't feel right. I'm still disappointed that
- 34:53Speaker 6: when during the Johnny years they didn't do the zebra
- 34:56Speaker 6: jerseys that they said they were gonna they tease about,
- 35:00Speaker 6: you know, they had they photoshopped the swag copter with
- 35:04Speaker 6: with the zebra adida stuff, that would have been hilarious.
- 35:08Speaker 1: Well, I think one thing about the uniforms. Oregon had
- 35:13Speaker 1: the market there cornered for a while. Then I think
- 35:17Speaker 1: everybody's pasted him. Oregon can't shock anybody like there for
- 35:21Speaker 1: a while it was like, oh, what's Oregon going to
- 35:22Speaker 1: do next? You know, because all Nike whatever, I think
- 35:26Speaker 1: everybody else is kind of caught up. When's the last
- 35:30Speaker 1: time he said, Oh what's what's what's Oregon going to do?
- 35:34Speaker 1: And I think the fact that they went into Big ten,
- 35:38Speaker 1: I don't know if that really helped them or not.
- 35:40Speaker 6: Yeah, I could give you a list of alternative jerseys
- 35:43Speaker 6: that I've not liked, but I won't subject chips listeners
- 35:47Speaker 6: to that one.
- 35:47Speaker 1: Oh well, I did want to talk a little bit
- 35:51Speaker 1: about the Big ten going on today. Bret Bellima. I
- 35:58Speaker 1: don't know if you've heard what he said today, but
- 36:01Speaker 1: but Brett Billiba go back to his days at the
- 36:04Speaker 1: at the SEC media days. Remember he's the one that
- 36:08Speaker 1: come in with that. He was upset at the running
- 36:11Speaker 1: running shoot, wanted the ground the game, you know, him
- 36:13Speaker 1: and him and Sabman kind of a little bit and
- 36:16Speaker 1: uh say, Billimo was was pretty good. Uh let me
- 36:21Speaker 1: see if I can get.
- 36:22Speaker 6: Mike today that he wants you, I'll let you do it.
- 36:25Speaker 1: Yeah, here's his quote. I know SEC Commissioner Greg Sank
- 36:29Speaker 1: has got to protect the se SI SEC and they
- 36:33Speaker 1: kind of want to live in two thousand and five forever.
- 36:37Speaker 1: But I think the forward thinking of where we are
- 36:40Speaker 1: in college football is an awesome thing. Okay, I want
- 36:47Speaker 1: to read that again, but I kind of read that
- 36:50Speaker 1: the first time and said, huh, then I look at
- 36:52Speaker 1: what the guy wrote. Billima was asked to further expand
- 36:57Speaker 1: on that, which I'm glad he did. And of course
- 37:00Speaker 1: Billama said, I think I just made the headline, right, Okay,
- 37:06Speaker 1: I get it live. I guarantee you the SEC is
- 37:09Speaker 1: not living in twenty five. Give the Big Ten props
- 37:14Speaker 1: for winning three national championships, but this is when it
- 37:20Speaker 1: But uh, Billima obviously studied this because the SEC won
- 37:25Speaker 1: thirteen championships from twenty six to twenty two. Okay, get that.
- 37:29Speaker 1: That's thirteen out of what sixteen or seventeen? And now
- 37:33Speaker 1: the Big Ten's won two three in a row. That's
- 37:37Speaker 1: to say that that they've won for three years. Billama
- 37:41Speaker 1: should kept his mouth shut. I mean, that's gonna come
- 37:43Speaker 1: back on him and be honest. When he was at
- 37:47Speaker 1: the SEC, I always wanted to go listen to him
- 37:49Speaker 1: because he was controversially. He's going to say something.
- 37:52Speaker 6: Oh man, but they had some great ones.
- 37:54Speaker 1: But that being said is this guy couldn't beat Kevin someone.
- 37:58Speaker 1: Let's be honest, would it? Right right down to it?
- 38:01Speaker 1: He never could beat Kevin Sumlin.
- 38:03Speaker 6: He probably should have never left Wisconsin.
- 38:05Speaker 1: Well, yeah, there's a lot of truth to that. Here's
- 38:11Speaker 1: the one that I wanted to get to about Billima. Billima.
- 38:16Speaker 1: Uh got a lot of Billa Billima described knealing down
- 38:26Speaker 1: while beating running out the clock in their victory against
- 38:30Speaker 1: Texas in Night in twenty fourteen, he described as watching
- 38:37Speaker 1: that bordered on was borderline erotic. Okay, yeah, we all
- 38:42Speaker 1: remember that one and you go like, oh, and so
- 38:45Speaker 1: I'll give all the credit to one of our former
- 38:50Speaker 1: colleagues at The Eagle, ol In Buchanan, who now works
- 38:54Speaker 1: for Texaggs the falling year at SEC Two years later
- 38:58Speaker 1: at the SEC Me to Days, this was Olan's question,
- 39:02Speaker 1: coach two years ago, here you described a win over
- 39:06Speaker 1: Texas as being borderline erotic. I was wondering, if you're
- 39:11Speaker 1: able to beat A and M with the way things
- 39:14Speaker 1: have gone in your series with them, how do you
- 39:16Speaker 1: think you would describe that? Got to give Olan, and
- 39:20Speaker 1: I can remember Bill was saying like, oh man, and
- 39:23Speaker 1: this is how he answered. I know you guys are
- 39:26Speaker 1: all looking for quotes. I don't think I can go
- 39:30Speaker 1: much further than that one that was in a small
- 39:33Speaker 1: group session, and that was before I had a child.
- 39:37Speaker 1: So I'll just leave it all there. These coaches don't
- 39:41Speaker 1: some of them realize that. Some of them don't man,
- 39:43Speaker 1: that that quote stick. These quotes stick with you every
- 39:48Speaker 1: time and of course they immediately pulled out that when
- 39:52Speaker 1: Billman also said at Arkansas once we're not built sexy,
- 39:57Speaker 1: We're just a work in progress. We need a lot
- 40:01Speaker 1: of time in the bathroom to get ready and come
- 40:03Speaker 1: out and look great. But once we do, we stop time.
- 40:08Speaker 4: You know.
- 40:08Speaker 1: It's like, you know, you had to think about that
- 40:11Speaker 1: stuff before, he says, and this is when they're gonna
- 40:16Speaker 1: play Michigan. I understand how the Michigan Notre Dame things
- 40:20Speaker 1: sound sexy to everybody else, but I think Michigan and Arkansas,
- 40:24Speaker 1: Arkansas sounds sexy. I was very excited about the Big
- 40:28Speaker 1: Ten versus s EC. I made a comment in the spring,
- 40:31Speaker 1: I'd love to see an SEC challenge at the front end.
- 40:36Speaker 1: My commission gave me a josh back and said, that's
- 40:40Speaker 1: called a bowl game, you know. And you know it's funny,
- 40:44Speaker 1: is Alex You look at the SEC Media Days. I
- 40:47Speaker 1: want to say about three coaches got up there and said,
- 40:51Speaker 1: I was watching SEC Media Days yesterday because a lot
- 40:55Speaker 1: of them just flew in for one day, and I
- 40:57Speaker 1: was amazed at how many coaches watched the other coaches
- 41:01Speaker 1: just to see what they have to say. Sar Kissington
- 41:04Speaker 1: was one of the ones that said he watched what
- 41:06Speaker 1: they were saying the other day, and I think sarkissing
- 41:08Speaker 1: went late.
- 41:09Speaker 6: They all listens, whether they admitted or not. So they're
- 41:12Speaker 6: all listening. They're all watching, and of course or their
- 41:16Speaker 6: right hand person's listening and watching and passing what they
- 41:19Speaker 6: need to know.
- 41:20Speaker 1: And of course I plump we were talking. Of course
- 41:24Speaker 1: we talk all the time. He's in my room, he's
- 41:26Speaker 1: got to he's got to listen to me. But I
- 41:28Speaker 1: plumb forgot about Elcho making the comment somewhere among us whatever,
- 41:33Speaker 1: which they brought up up on the which Texas showed
- 41:38Speaker 1: on the video last year at the game after the
- 41:41Speaker 1: game was over, when I think it was uh, Elko
- 41:44Speaker 1: said that they wanted to be the lead universe.
- 41:47Speaker 6: They wanted to be the flagship university of the state.
- 41:49Speaker 6: And when they Texas took the final knee, they played
- 41:52Speaker 6: that video and then they said psych and it was
- 41:55Speaker 6: like a montage of all the Longhorn pluy.
- 41:57Speaker 1: Yeah, here's the deal is.
- 42:00Speaker 3: Love.
- 42:00Speaker 1: This is why I love college sports. What else do
- 42:04Speaker 1: you expect Elko to say, we want to be second
- 42:07Speaker 1: or third in the state. I mean, he's hired to
- 42:11Speaker 1: win championships, so he's going to say that. And if
- 42:16Speaker 1: you're Texas and uh sar kissing. If you want to
- 42:21Speaker 1: be offended, great, but just do what you have done.
- 42:27Speaker 1: You won two games. It's it's all about winning. And
- 42:29Speaker 1: I chuckled because a couple of our co works were
- 42:32Speaker 1: with us in the scrums, Kirk Bowles of the Houston
- 42:36Speaker 1: Chronicle and Cedric Golden of the Austin merg Statesman, asking
- 42:42Speaker 1: questions of Mike Elko whatever. And I loved when Kirk asked,
- 42:47Speaker 1: have you arrived? And I even loved Elko's answer better
- 42:53Speaker 1: because he said they hadn't done nothing, anything, anything yet.
- 42:56Speaker 1: And I like that because someone and Jimbo Fisher, I
- 43:04Speaker 1: might be wrong. I thought they felt they accomplished something
- 43:08Speaker 1: when they beat Alabama that year and went ten and
- 43:12Speaker 1: two or eleven two whatever it was someone in his
- 43:15Speaker 1: first year, and when Jimbo went dining and wan and
- 43:18Speaker 1: went to the Orange Bowl, I think they thought they
- 43:20Speaker 1: accomplished something, but they didn't really accomplish anything. Until you
- 43:24Speaker 1: win some big hardware, you haven't done anything. So I
- 43:28Speaker 1: like the fact that Elko's not going to take a
- 43:31Speaker 1: champion what I call championship light let's see.
- 43:34Speaker 6: No, No, absolutely not. I think they understand that. You know,
- 43:39Speaker 6: there's a big fish to catch. They've caught some small fish,
- 43:42Speaker 6: they're on their way to catch the big fish. And
- 43:45Speaker 6: I think they are on their way to catching the
- 43:47Speaker 6: big fish, but that big fish is still in the
- 43:49Speaker 6: pond and they got to reel them in so well,
- 43:53Speaker 6: and just.
- 43:53Speaker 1: Once again, is you love the SEC and then you
- 43:58Speaker 1: throw in the rivalry because you know A and them
- 44:02Speaker 1: at Texas. I mean, you just think about I'm thinking
- 44:05Speaker 1: about after Thanksgiving. Oh my gosh, I don't know what's
- 44:08Speaker 1: going to happen until then. I think that's going to
- 44:10Speaker 1: be a huge game. Even if it doesn't turn out
- 44:13Speaker 1: to be a huge game on both sides nation nationally,
- 44:17Speaker 1: it's going to be a big game. Texas has beat
- 44:19Speaker 1: A and M twice, and suddenly, in our era of
- 44:22Speaker 1: instant communication, it seems like A and M hasn't beaten
- 44:26Speaker 1: Texas forever. I get it, you've got to go back
- 44:28Speaker 1: to the Big twelve. But I mean, just in the
- 44:32Speaker 1: SEC two years is a long time. Now you're gonna
- 44:35Speaker 1: start playing nine games. The years are going to seem
- 44:38Speaker 1: longer just because they mean more. And speaking about me,
- 44:41Speaker 1: and more. We'll be back with more right after this.

- 45:20Speaker 17: Details next, I'm veterinarian doctor Bob Judd. Squreworms are now
- 45:24Speaker 17: in Texas and if you're a hunter or outdoors enthusiasts,
- 45:27Speaker 17: stay on the lookout for any type of wildlife that
- 45:30Speaker 17: may have them. Squreworms can live in any warm blooded animal,
- 45:33Speaker 17: including deer, hogs, squirrels, and rabbits. If you see any
- 45:36Speaker 17: type of suspicious wound that may have screw worms. Mark
- 45:39Speaker 17: the location, call your local Texas Parks and Wildlife office.
- 45:43Speaker 17: Working together, we can limit the spread of screw worms
- 45:45Speaker 17: and read our state of this pest once again.
- 45:48Speaker 2: This message is sponsored by Texas Farm Bureau.
- 45:51Speaker 16: The Texas Rangers were firing on all cylinders in their
- 45:55Speaker 16: win over the Seattle Mariners yesterday, final score seven to two.
- 45:59Speaker 16: Jock Peterson and opened the scoring with his six leadoff
- 46:02Speaker 16: home run of the season. After Seattle responded with a
- 46:05Speaker 16: solo blast of their own to tie it up, Peterson
- 46:08Speaker 16: cranked a three run blast in the bottom of the
- 46:10Speaker 16: second inning to retake the lead.
- 46:12Speaker 4: By those two.
- 46:13Speaker 14: Not having a big, huge collision here, Peterson lights into
- 46:17Speaker 14: one down the right field line.
- 46:19Speaker 6: This ball coming down and over the world.
- 46:22Speaker 16: The Rangers hit two more homers in the third inning
- 46:24Speaker 16: to extend their lead to seven to two, and they
- 46:27Speaker 16: cruise to a decisive victory. With a win, the Rangers
- 46:30Speaker 16: win the series against Seattle three games to one. The
- 46:33Speaker 16: Rangers begin a road series tonight against the Tampa Bay Rays.
- 46:37Speaker 16: First pitch at five point coverage on the Rangers Sports
- 46:40Speaker 16: Network with your Texas Rangers Report.

- 47:16Speaker 4: The Sony eleven Am and maybe three point seven flows that.
- 47:35Speaker 1: That Oh Chicago, that's bedest part of time. Let's road
- 47:40Speaker 1: lived down.
- 47:42Speaker 10: Then you better but be aware of a man named
- 47:45Speaker 10: Lee Rod Brown and Lee Rock. He is saying about
- 47:51Speaker 10: six food four No downtown ladies calling me trump over
- 47:57Speaker 10: and reround called in, sir, I.
- 48:00Speaker 1: Don't know that song. Yeah, I really get into it
- 48:04Speaker 1: because the wife got cyrus.
- 48:07Speaker 13: So we go to.
- 48:09Speaker 1: What I usually do in town because I got a
- 48:11Speaker 1: cheap car. I usually listen it's a Brian broadcasting. I
- 48:17Speaker 1: usually listen to one oh seven point seven. My soul
- 48:20Speaker 1: needs all the help it can get. But we go
- 48:22Speaker 1: on the road trip to Naples. I turn on Syru's sixties.
- 48:26Speaker 1: Even though my wife's more of an eighties girl. Whatever,
- 48:30Speaker 1: I listened to sixties, so I get like thirty hours
- 48:33Speaker 1: of bad bed Leroy Brown, you know, and boats sitting
- 48:36Speaker 1: on the dock of the bay and all them. So
- 48:39Speaker 1: the time flies by the way I drive. And when
- 48:41Speaker 1: you're going ninety five and one hundred, you need some
- 48:43Speaker 1: good music, you get on I seventy five and forty
- 48:46Speaker 1: and it's bye bye car. Here we go. Okay, we're
- 48:50Speaker 1: back here. I guess we're back here leftovers along with
- 48:54Speaker 1: coworker Alex Miller, always like listening to the new coaches
- 48:59Speaker 1: coming in every year. I've been blessed to be able
- 49:01Speaker 1: to go now to fifteen sec media days, uh, Lane
- 49:07Speaker 1: Kiffin when it comes to talking for that many years
- 49:10Speaker 1: in the in the U, Nick Saban's world and Stick
- 49:13Speaker 1: particularly Steve Spray or God bless him, because they were
- 49:17Speaker 1: meant to have a microphone in front of them.
- 49:19Speaker 14: But the New, the New.
- 49:20Speaker 1: Breed Man, we had four and you know, I hate
- 49:23Speaker 1: to say this, I didn't really count. You never count,
- 49:25Speaker 1: Lane Kiff, and Ken that was the seventh and he
- 49:28Speaker 1: was so subdued he was it was like he was
- 49:30Speaker 1: on kueludes.
- 49:31Speaker 6: Also, his whole thing about we're all gonna die, that.
- 49:34Speaker 1: Was I immediately said, I got a scoop. We're all
- 49:38Speaker 1: going to die. And I've covered teams that died really early,
- 49:41Speaker 1: you know, so as far as that's concerned. But I
- 49:45Speaker 1: also said I was gonna say that, uh uh pete, Pete,
- 49:49Speaker 1: Golding wasn't gonna count because he wasn't new. But Golding
- 49:53Speaker 1: was good, gold was great. He was counted. And here's
- 49:57Speaker 1: how things have changed, Alex. And you can agree you're
- 49:59Speaker 1: going because you even know your new school, you under
- 50:03Speaker 1: understand old school. The quote media that clapped when he
- 50:08Speaker 1: came in and left, you don't do that at a
- 50:10Speaker 1: press conference. You can't clap, even though he was worthy
- 50:13Speaker 1: of clapping.
- 50:14Speaker 6: See, I wasn't in there when that happened. Okay, And
- 50:18Speaker 6: so no, yeah, no, obviously that's a big no.
- 50:22Speaker 5: No.
- 50:22Speaker 6: What I'm curious is, as we know, there are school staffers,
- 50:29Speaker 6: school peep officials that oftentimes will tag along.
- 50:33Speaker 1: On the payroll.
- 50:33Speaker 6: And I was curious if that those that happened to
- 50:38Speaker 6: be maybe some of them.
- 50:40Speaker 1: Yeah, I can guarantee you that, uh uh Pat forty.
- 50:46Speaker 6: Or hey, but drink WIT's made sure to tell Pat
- 50:49Speaker 6: forty forty. You gotta say zo u or.
- 50:52Speaker 1: The other guy from on three that saved my bacon
- 50:55Speaker 1: on my question.
- 50:56Speaker 6: Uh oh Andy Staples, Andy Staples.
- 50:58Speaker 1: They weren't clapping, they But anyway, the new the new
- 51:02Speaker 1: guys overall, I like, like, I give them all pretty
- 51:05Speaker 1: high marks. Who did you like the best?
- 51:08Speaker 6: Yeah, I mean Golding was just so funny, and you know,
- 51:13Speaker 6: he was asked about a lot of prickly subjects, whether
- 51:17Speaker 6: Lane Kiffin, some of the tampering allegations that he specifically
- 51:22Speaker 6: has faced, some of the other things, and I mean
- 51:27Speaker 6: he was just the responses were amazing. It was Golding
- 51:32Speaker 6: was Golden in Maya po Now a guy that caught
- 51:38Speaker 6: me by surprise was Ryan Silverfield of Arkansas just a.
- 51:44Speaker 1: Little just I mean ted dry.
- 51:46Speaker 6: Yeah, he was dry. But he had his moments, like
- 51:50Speaker 6: he had a reporter asking him, hey, you were five
- 51:54Speaker 6: and one against the SEC and he goes, wait, wait
- 51:57Speaker 6: a second, can you repeat that? What what's my record
- 51:59Speaker 6: against the And so I mean this is a guy
- 52:04Speaker 6: who's stepping into probably the worst job in the SEC
- 52:09Speaker 6: right now by far. And you know he's got to
- 52:12Speaker 6: sell hope, He's got to sell something, and he did,
- 52:18Speaker 6: speaking of which you know, he talked about he's got Aura.
- 52:21Speaker 6: Do you know what Aura sees?
- 52:25Speaker 1: Isn't there an Aura Colorado?
- 52:28Speaker 6: Uh? Yeah, you got Aura wearing that Hawaiian tropic shirt.
- 52:34Speaker 6: But no, I thought Silverfield was great. Let's see uh
- 52:39Speaker 6: some raw holy cow. That guy. He he's he's a
- 52:44Speaker 6: ball of energy. I mean, and we got to see
- 52:47Speaker 6: him kind of chop it up with Elko in the
- 52:49Speaker 6: back hallway before we talked with Elco, and you and
- 52:54Speaker 6: I went back and forth. The bottom line is somebody's
- 52:57Speaker 6: device went off in the main media room during his
- 53:00Speaker 6: press conference and he basically joked that he'd throw a poet.
- 53:04Speaker 6: If it was the team meeting, he'd throw the podium
- 53:06Speaker 6: at him. I mean, and it was. It was really good.
- 53:10Speaker 12: Uh.
- 53:10Speaker 1: And then silver came back into it.
- 53:14Speaker 6: Don't worry at I won't throw I won't throw the
- 53:17Speaker 6: right So he was watching watching the will Stein from Kentucky.
- 53:24Speaker 4: Uh A.
- 53:25Speaker 6: The fact that I had my hand raised the entire
- 53:28Speaker 6: time and didn't get to ask a question while he
- 53:30Speaker 6: was founding and the fact. The thing, the thing that
- 53:34Speaker 6: stood out to me was he was asked like, what,
- 53:37Speaker 6: what what makes you think that you can win big
- 53:40Speaker 6: at Kentucky And he goes, this is going to sound
- 53:44Speaker 6: a little wrong, but because of me, and I mean,
- 53:48Speaker 6: that's awesome. Look Kentucky. If Kentucky, by God's grace, is
- 53:55Speaker 6: in Atlanta for the SEC Championship, which my grandpa would
- 53:59Speaker 6: be a huge fan of because he went to Kentucky.
- 54:01Speaker 17: We know that.
- 54:03Speaker 6: If Kentucky makes the SEC Championship, and if that is
- 54:07Speaker 6: not the lead clip and a hype video, then they've
- 54:10Speaker 6: done it wrong.
- 54:11Speaker 1: Well, you're right about one thing. I plumb forgot about that.
- 54:13Speaker 1: You know yesterday so much to do because you don't
- 54:17Speaker 1: he when he said that here, remind me Chuck Lee
- 54:19Speaker 1: or Leigh how you pronounce his name? Clark him too?
- 54:22Speaker 1: The Vanderbilt coach basically said the same thing at his
- 54:25Speaker 1: first and I got this guy is so dry, dry
- 54:27Speaker 1: he'll never last. And you know, of course he knew
- 54:29Speaker 1: how to recruit. He remind me of him. But before
- 54:32Speaker 1: we rune out of time, I always ask forget about
- 54:36Speaker 1: wins and losses. If you had to cover one of
- 54:39Speaker 1: those new coaches, all their press conferences all year. Which
- 54:43Speaker 1: one would you pick?
- 54:44Speaker 6: I'm gonna go with the guy that we did not mention,
- 54:47Speaker 6: and that is Alex Golish of Auburn. Oh real, okay,
- 54:51Speaker 6: and talking with a couple of guys that cover Auburn,
- 54:53Speaker 6: he's been great to deal with. It sounds like, uh,
- 54:56Speaker 6: you know, I felt like he he gave genuine on
- 55:00Speaker 6: answers and you know, as someone who's got to write
- 55:02Speaker 6: and cover people every day, uh, that that goes a
- 55:06Speaker 6: long way. And I think that it helps our readers
- 55:09Speaker 6: that people like Mike Elcho or Bucky McMillan and Michael
- 55:13Speaker 6: Early and Tricia Ford and Joni Ta they will they'll
- 55:16Speaker 6: tell you how it is. Jamie Morrison will tell you
- 55:18Speaker 6: how it is, and it helps our readers understand what's
- 55:22Speaker 6: going on just a little better.
- 55:24Speaker 1: I would probably pick Summer off. For years it was
- 55:27Speaker 1: just Kiff and you know, even saving a couple of times.
- 55:29Speaker 1: And I liked less Miles too, So Spray or Spray
- 55:32Speaker 1: was the greatest. My time in fifth Sprayer is the greatest.
- 55:35Speaker 1: But I'd probably picked Summer off because I knowing me,
- 55:38Speaker 1: he'd have to throw a podium at me sometime because
- 55:41Speaker 1: my my phone will go off because I don't know
- 55:43Speaker 1: how to work at half the time.
- 55:44Speaker 6: Did happen last year?
- 55:45Speaker 1: Yeah? And Elcho didn't throw uh. And one time I
- 55:49Speaker 1: came in to the press conference one minute early and
- 55:52Speaker 1: they started early, and he didn't say anything because it
- 55:54Speaker 1: was like he really also realized it was on time.
- 55:57Speaker 1: But I want to see if Summer would probably throw
- 56:00Speaker 1: a podium at me, because I've been known to go
- 56:02Speaker 1: off off the rail off norm once in a while.
- 56:06Speaker 1: I know it's hard to believe, but okay, I'll tell
- 56:09Speaker 1: you what. We're winding it down here. My sympothies go
- 56:14Speaker 1: out to the hannout Rap who lost her life. I
- 56:18Speaker 1: was able to interview twice on phone. Tragic deal, just
- 56:23Speaker 1: just she'd probably be a world champion in boxing if
- 56:28Speaker 1: she her life wouldn't have been taken. I know she's
- 56:31Speaker 1: gonna have some deals back home in Indiana. But July
- 56:34Speaker 1: twenty night's a big day. Or remember her. Take a walk,
- 56:38Speaker 1: do something, give some money to a charity, or go
- 56:41Speaker 1: for a bike ride and remember her life, because you
- 56:45Speaker 1: know you I heard that we were at SEC medias
- 56:48Speaker 1: or whatever. I like, all, wow, she'd been twenty seven
- 56:51Speaker 1: this week. You think about. I'm not in charge, but
- 56:55Speaker 1: make make make the most out of your life every day,
- 56:59Speaker 1: make every mispronouncing you can do. Want to thank Jacob
- 57:02Speaker 1: for working the board. Stan, You'll be great, Alex. I
- 57:05Speaker 1: couldn't have done this show without you, so I appreciate you.
- 57:10Speaker 12: Uh.
- 57:10Speaker 1: I say Connor again, Caleb, he said Jacob, oh wow?
- 57:14Speaker 1: And uh and Raleigh, I think my name is Spy
