- 0:00Speaker 1: Now, from the Star Reynolds Sports Desk, your 93.3 KJR
- 0:04Speaker 1: FM Sports Headlines.
- 0:06Speaker 2: All right, here we go. Headlines are brought to you
- 0:08Speaker 2: by Frostbrood Coors Light. Seahawks are in Kansas City for
- 0:12Speaker 2: their third and final preseason game tonight. If you want depth...
- 0:17Speaker 2: You got depth. 22 starters, none of them will play
- 0:22Speaker 2: this evening. Expect to see Jalen Milrow under center the
- 0:26Speaker 2: entire game. And I mean the entire game. Kickoff, 5 p.m.,
- 0:30Speaker 2: by the way, in Kansas City. Leonard Williams also making
- 0:34Speaker 2: his contract extension official yesterday. Three-year, $ 90 million deal alongside
- 0:41Speaker 2: his wife and five-month-old son. What a story. What a
- 0:44Speaker 2: personality as well. He's locked up here for the longer term.
- 0:48Speaker 2: The Mariners' day off yesterday. They traveled cross-country. They take on...
- 0:54Speaker 2: Those evil, rotten Blue Jays from Toronto.
- 0:57Speaker 3: Let's invade them for once.
- 0:58Speaker 2: Three-game series beginning this evening. We still have fond or
- 1:03Speaker 2: not-so-fond memories of last October. This is, again, a big series.
- 1:07Speaker 2: 4-15 first pitch, by the way. We're going to have
- 1:10Speaker 2: a guy on the call nationally from Apple TV later
- 1:13Speaker 2: on today. Ryan Spielberg's, again, 4-15 first pitch Mariners game.
- 1:17Speaker 2: at the Blue Jays. Other NFL news, the Rams adding
- 1:21Speaker 2: another wide receiver yesterday, trading for Tutu Atwell and sending
- 1:25Speaker 2: the Dolphins running back Jarquez Hunter in return. Head coach
- 1:29Speaker 2: Sean McVay insisting this has, quote, nothing to do, end quote,
- 1:33Speaker 2: with the potential suspension of two-time Pro Bowler Puka Nakua, okay,
- 1:38Speaker 2: and simply adding depth here to the wide receiver room.
- 1:41Speaker 2: Clint Kubiak staying mum on QB1. What a surprise. Veteran
- 1:46Speaker 2: QB Kirk Cousins, rookie Fernando Mendoza are still, in theory,
- 1:51Speaker 2: competing for the job. Kubiak telling the media, quote, he
- 1:55Speaker 2: needs another three preseason games and all those rookies do,
- 2:00Speaker 2: end quote. Okay. Tony Romo was issued three new citations.
- 2:06Speaker 4: Oh, boy.
- 2:07Speaker 2: Stemming here from his July arrest in Wisconsin, he was
- 2:09Speaker 2: initially cited for refusing to take a test for intoxication
- 2:12Speaker 2: after an arrest.
- 2:13Speaker 4: Oh, boy.
- 2:15Speaker 2: The three new citations include unsafe passing on the right,
- 2:18Speaker 2: first offense, OWI, and possessing open intoxicants. You're saying that's bad?
- 2:25Speaker 2: I know that Greg has got Twitter open. He's got
- 2:28Speaker 2: social media open. He posted something this morning that he's
- 2:30Speaker 2: on the way to Kansas City. And this is also
- 2:32Speaker 2: on the playlist. But I wouldn't doubt that this is
- 2:34Speaker 2: probably going on loop now for about six or seven times.
- 2:37Speaker 2: So we actually might catch him at the right time.
- 2:39Speaker 3: Yeah, that would be pretty interesting, actually.
- 2:42Speaker 5: I'm just wondering how that would sync up.
- 2:44Speaker 3: And we have no way of knowing. Because he's listening
- 2:47Speaker 3: to one thing or the other.
- 2:48Speaker 2: I might text him during commercial break. I might text him.
- 2:51Speaker 2: I being me, Mike Benton, I'm filling in for Greg
- 2:53Speaker 2: Bell with the great Jessamyn McIntyre on the other side
- 2:56Speaker 2: of the glass. This show is going to fly by.
- 2:58Speaker 2: So strap in, buckle up. We got a lot to
- 3:01Speaker 2: get to here for today because the Mariners are in
- 3:03Speaker 2: Toronto and what is still again for probably the fifth
- 3:06Speaker 2: time in a row. biggest series of the year and
- 3:09Speaker 2: the Seahawks at Kansas city. Hey, if you want to
- 3:11Speaker 2: pay full price here to watch depth and practice squad
- 3:14Speaker 2: guys go for it, but this is what's going to
- 3:16Speaker 2: come down to no one of any notoriety. No one,
- 3:19Speaker 2: as far as first ring on the depth chart is
- 3:22Speaker 2: going to play in this game. And it's going to
- 3:23Speaker 2: be the Jalen Milrose show from start to finish for
- 3:26Speaker 2: this evening. So we're going to also hit the sidelines,
- 3:29Speaker 2: not just, I think in our conversation with this, but
- 3:32Speaker 2: also from the other side of, uh, The opposing end here,
- 3:36Speaker 2: Josh Klinger from the Chiefs Radio Network, going to be
- 3:39Speaker 2: joining us at 11 a.m. Before that, Roxy Bernstein at
- 3:43Speaker 2: 1020 from ESPN. He's been following the baseball scene a lot.
- 3:46Speaker 2: We've seen him in cross paths in Seattle, of course.
- 3:49Speaker 2: So we're going to get a chance to tap into
- 3:51Speaker 2: what he thinks about the Mariners' chances in the American
- 3:53Speaker 2: League West and the biggest threat here in the wildcard pursuit.
- 3:57Speaker 2: And did the Mariners blow it? Not getting Gino Suarez
- 4:00Speaker 2: 24 hours ago. I mean, how much are we still
- 4:03Speaker 2: kind of thinking, what if?
- 4:04Speaker 5: I mean, seriously, it was just like a nothing burger
- 4:07Speaker 5: to get him, right? And he's such a positive impact
- 4:11Speaker 5: on that clubhouse. I am so surprised that they didn't
- 4:13Speaker 5: do that.
- 4:13Speaker 6: I mean.
- 4:15Speaker 2: I've got thoughts on this, just ranging from the numbers
- 4:19Speaker 2: and how much is it worth it based on his decline.
- 4:24Speaker 2: But we can talk about good vibes only here to
- 4:27Speaker 2: the point of how much is this really going to
- 4:29Speaker 2: matter if you bring a guy on who's not hitting
- 4:32Speaker 2: the ball that well. But is there maybe a caveat
- 4:35Speaker 2: that we're not thinking about versus depth in the lineup?
- 4:37Speaker 2: We're going to get to that. Roxy Bernstein, by the way,
- 4:40Speaker 2: at 1045, we should have saved this also maybe for 1045,
- 4:42Speaker 2: return of the Mac. Mackie Samuskevich, new Kraken Ford. We
- 4:48Speaker 2: actually had a conversation with him yesterday at Kraken Community Iceplex.
- 4:53Speaker 2: All around the big news once again, the Kraken, iHeartMedia, Seattle,
- 4:58Speaker 2: 93.3 KJR, a big crown jewel part of this. Our coverage, again,
- 5:02Speaker 2: continuing from a deeper level on a multi-year extension. That
- 5:06Speaker 2: includes play-by-play broadcasting. But we had Mackie Samuskevich over at
- 5:10Speaker 2: Kraken Community Ice Plugs, all a part of the Kraken
- 5:12Speaker 2: Audio Network and our Overtime Podcast. And we'll have that
- 5:15Speaker 2: conversation come up here at about 1045. So he's in
- 5:19Speaker 2: town now. He's living with Matty Beneers. And it's crazy
- 5:22Speaker 2: how the two almost look alike. But they also play together,
- 5:25Speaker 2: not just in Michigan for college hockey, but also in
- 5:28Speaker 2: youth hockey as well.
- 5:30Speaker 3: Irish brothers.
- 5:31Speaker 2: They just might be long lost. Yeah, they might be
- 5:34Speaker 2: long lost. So he's here now. How many times did
- 5:38Speaker 2: he mention playoffs? I'll leave that for you to listen to.
- 5:41Speaker 2: And if we can get to this also, there's a
- 5:43Speaker 2: funny story, by the way, on when he met Matty
- 5:46Speaker 2: and the first time that he played against Matty Beneers,
- 5:50Speaker 2: did he go into the right locker room? I'll leave
- 5:53Speaker 2: that here for a cliffhanger for you. But Mackie Samaskevich
- 5:56Speaker 2: at 1045. We mentioned Josh Klingler for the Chiefs Radio
- 5:59Speaker 2: Network at 11 a.m. And then 1115, Ryan Spielberg, as
- 6:02Speaker 2: we mentioned earlier, from Apple TV. He's a part of
- 6:05Speaker 2: the Mariners at Blue Jays coverage here for this evening.
- 6:08Speaker 2: Are there any hidden landmines he thinks may be in
- 6:10Speaker 2: the Mariners' September schedule? And the Mariners versus the Astros
- 6:15Speaker 2: versus the Rangers. Who's the team to beat if you're
- 6:18Speaker 2: looking at this here from the Mariners' perspective? But we're
- 6:21Speaker 2: going to get Ryan Spielberg's 20,000-foot view here on this
- 6:24Speaker 2: coming up at around 11.15 here from Apple TV. Jess,
- 6:29Speaker 2: I mentioned about how much the Mariners and Blue Jays
- 6:31Speaker 2: series is just massive here for tonight because Toronto is
- 6:35Speaker 2: still very much in the thick of this. And for
- 6:37Speaker 2: these two teams, this might be as close as you
- 6:39Speaker 2: can get to make or break. And by the way,
- 6:41Speaker 2: a great chance here to plug 49451 Tacoma Dodge text
- 6:44Speaker 2: line because... How much are we just kind of on
- 6:46Speaker 2: pins and needles once again for a series this big?
- 6:49Speaker 2: Because all we're asking for for the Mariners is pure
- 6:52Speaker 2: survival here for this series and here for the Red
- 6:55Speaker 2: Sox series. And then they're back home. And I mentioned
- 6:59Speaker 2: this about a few days ago in this chair on
- 7:01Speaker 2: another show here filling in for Ian. where it just
- 7:04Speaker 2: almost kind of feels like this baseball team is like
- 7:07Speaker 2: an I-5 traffic jam at this point. You're cruising at
- 7:10Speaker 2: about 60 miles an hour. All of a sudden, you
- 7:13Speaker 2: hit the brakes, and you hit that sludge of traffic.
- 7:16Speaker 2: You look to your right or to your left. There's
- 7:18Speaker 2: like a flaming wreckage somewhere, a massive car crash. And
- 7:21Speaker 2: you're like, I just can't take my eyes off this thing.
- 7:24Speaker 2: And all of a sudden, you just get out of
- 7:26Speaker 2: this and zoom once again. Then you're hitting the brakes again.
- 7:29Speaker 2: Then you're hitting zoom once again. We're almost out of
- 7:32Speaker 2: that congestion part where it seems as if it's crystal
- 7:37Speaker 2: clear as it gets. Because awaiting after the Blue Jays
- 7:41Speaker 2: and the Red Sox are heavy hitters such as the Athletics.
- 7:46Speaker 2: Houston Astros, who haven't been playing that great, but are
- 7:51Speaker 2: also still surviving. The Texas Rangers.
- 7:52Speaker 3: Yeah, but that's a huge pendulum swing, that series.
- 7:55Speaker 2: And then the Angels. And then you have a road
- 7:58Speaker 2: series also at the Rockies as well mixed in. So
- 8:02Speaker 2: there's a lot of anti-heavy hitters here in this schedule.
- 8:07Speaker 2: So all you're asking for the Mariners maybe is to
- 8:10Speaker 2: get through this thing. And maybe do you think at
- 8:13Speaker 2: just 500, is that enough? 49451. You throw out Dylan
- 8:19Speaker 2: Seas tonight, if you're the Blue Jays. You throw out
- 8:22Speaker 2: Jose Siriano tomorrow night. I mean, if you can get
- 8:27Speaker 2: two of three, you call this series a win, Jess.
- 8:30Speaker 3: I completely agree.
- 8:32Speaker 5: But the thing is, are they going to play down
- 8:34Speaker 5: to their level? Are they going to play up to
- 8:36Speaker 5: the level? I feel like that's kind of what we've seen.
- 8:39Speaker 5: They did take care of some series that they had to.
- 8:41Speaker 5: but will they play like we saw them capable of?
- 8:46Speaker 2: And that was exactly the point I made the other day,
- 8:48Speaker 2: is that we can talk about how much they've leveled
- 8:51Speaker 2: up here to the Cubs, to the Phillies, but how
- 8:56Speaker 2: much can you avoid playing down to your competition? And
- 8:59Speaker 2: I used the cautionary tale of the San Francisco Giants
- 9:03Speaker 2: series and the Cincinnati series in a comparison. Can you
- 9:08Speaker 2: avoid playing down to your competition. Do you have confidence
- 9:12Speaker 2: in the Mariners to avoid playing down to their competition?
- 9:15Speaker 4: 49451.
- 9:15Speaker 2: I mean, very quick here also, did the Mariners blow
- 9:19Speaker 2: it with not getting Gino Suarez back? 49451. On the
- 9:23Speaker 2: plus side, you've got clubhouse vibes that we've gone over
- 9:26Speaker 2: and over and over on. And there's some substance to
- 9:29Speaker 2: what you can do for your own clubhouse when you
- 9:31Speaker 2: bring somebody back in who is familiar but is known.
- 9:35Speaker 2: And you and I have had first-person experience can just
- 9:39Speaker 2: swiftly lift the energy level and the mood in the
- 9:42Speaker 2: room by just how he communicates with other people, not
- 9:46Speaker 2: just his own teammates. I had a similar experience back
- 9:50Speaker 2: in the American League Division Series. You've been around that clubhouse, too.
- 9:54Speaker 2: There is actual substance here to this. The opposing part
- 9:58Speaker 2: of this is what are you actually doing? getting besides
- 10:01Speaker 2: clubhouse vibes and for his three mil price tag?
- 10:04Speaker 5: Well, I mean, he did hit a grand slam during
- 10:07Speaker 5: the ALCS, I believe.
- 10:09Speaker 2: And that was proof that you had struggles in the postseason,
- 10:13Speaker 2: but you found the right hit at the right time.
- 10:16Speaker 2: And I think where I get at here from this,
- 10:18Speaker 2: and to your point, Are we really at that point
- 10:22Speaker 2: with how just torn apart the Mariners' depth is that
- 10:25Speaker 2: we're actually considering Geno Suarez? Based on his. 208 average,
- 10:30Speaker 2: his negative 0.4 war, and defense is poor to below
- 10:35Speaker 2: average as well. But you're right now thinking about adding him.
- 10:39Speaker 2: Is this an upgrade over from what they've had in
- 10:41Speaker 2: their depth with Weston Wilson, Patrick Wisdom, and Taylor Ward,
- 10:46Speaker 2: who right now is on pace to be hitting worse
- 10:48Speaker 2: than Rob Raffsnyder? And that to me says, despite maybe
- 10:52Speaker 2: how poor his numbers are in comparison, by all means, yes,
- 10:57Speaker 2: my opinion, that should have been a great move on
- 10:59Speaker 2: multiple levels.
- 11:00Speaker 5: I don't see the downside. I really just I am
- 11:04Speaker 5: struggling to see the downside of claiming him. It's I
- 11:08Speaker 5: think that this clubhouse, there's been injures, injuries. And so there's,
- 11:12Speaker 5: you know, it comes with that cow struggle in the
- 11:14Speaker 5: beginning of the season. And I'm doing like a leveling
- 11:16Speaker 5: down of the mood and morale there.
- 11:19Speaker 3: That, I mean, if for that alone would be enough
- 11:23Speaker 3: for me.
- 11:23Speaker 2: I mean, Brendan Donovan enough. I mean, we thought we're
- 11:26Speaker 2: going to get a big season out of him. And,
- 11:27Speaker 2: you know, it's just like you have to keep him
- 11:29Speaker 2: bubble wrapped, even just walking out of the clubhouse at
- 11:30Speaker 2: this point. So, I mean, reliability, that's something to consider.
- 11:34Speaker 2: But did the Mariners blow it not getting Geno Suarez?
- 11:37Speaker 7: 4-9, 4-5-1.
- 11:38Speaker 2: We're going to get to more of this conversation. The
- 11:40Speaker 2: Seahawks again tonight in Kansas City for their preseason finale.
- 11:45Speaker 2: But around the corner is Roxy Bernstein from ESPN. We'll
- 11:48Speaker 2: talk with them about the Mariners' chances coming up here
- 11:51Speaker 2: in the postseason, plus more on the AL West Horizon.
- 11:54Speaker 2: Roxy Bernstein next on 93.3 KJRFM. But I have not
- 12:10Speaker 2: yet been to a Rush concert once in my life.
- 12:13Speaker 2: And I hear, to just call it an experience, not
- 12:18Speaker 2: enough justice. Mike Benton, Jessamyn, and for Greg Bell, without
- 12:22Speaker 2: further ado to the Beacon Plumbing Hotline, we go to
- 12:25Speaker 2: a guy who can tell us a lot about Rush
- 12:26Speaker 2: concerts and baseball and much more. That's our friend Roxy
- 12:29Speaker 2: Bernstein of ESPN.com. Roxy, hello. The Rush concert experience, I'm
- 12:36Speaker 2: well overdue, but tell me, you spend one song on
- 12:39Speaker 2: stage in an alternative universe, you and the body of
- 12:42Speaker 2: Geddy Lee. What song are you picking?
- 12:46Speaker 4: You just played it. Oh, okay, Spirit of Radio. Yeah.
- 12:50Speaker 4: Come on, let's go.
- 12:52Speaker 7: No, I and look, you're talking about maybe the most
- 12:56Speaker 7: fickle fan base in music. And, you know, unfortunately, with
- 13:01Speaker 7: Neil Peart passing away five years ago from cancer and
- 13:05Speaker 7: who you never knew, you probably were not optimistic that
- 13:11Speaker 7: this was going to happen, that Geddy Lee and Alex
- 13:14Speaker 7: Life's going to go back out on the road. But
- 13:17Speaker 7: Anika Niles has stepped into maybe the biggest shoes in
- 13:20Speaker 7: rock and roll. When you're stepping in for Neil Peart
- 13:23Speaker 7: and the drummer for Rush, with this fan base, she
- 13:26Speaker 7: has crushed it. She has been tremendous. And it is
- 13:31Speaker 7: an amazing show. They still sound unbelievable. And Getty just
- 13:35Speaker 7: turned 73. And they have so much energy. I know
- 13:40Speaker 7: they're coming to Seattle in October, right? They're coming to
- 13:42Speaker 7: Climate Pledge.
- 13:43Speaker 8: Mm-hmm.
- 13:44Speaker 4: You got to go. I need to go. You got
- 13:46Speaker 4: to go.
- 13:46Speaker 2: I will be on the horn for that. I will
- 13:48Speaker 2: be on the horn for that for sure. When's the
- 13:49Speaker 2: last time you saw Rush in concert?
- 13:52Speaker 4: Last Friday night.
- 13:54Speaker 2: You're fresh out of it then.
- 13:57Speaker 4: So last weekend, so Friday I flew San Francisco to Philly.
- 14:01Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 14:02Speaker 7: Saw them at the arena there where the Sixers and
- 14:06Speaker 7: the Flyers play.
- 14:08Speaker 4: Friday night, Saturday night. It worked out perfect.
- 14:10Speaker 7: I had the Phillies on Saturday night last weekend against
- 14:13Speaker 7: the Cardinals. And then I drove to Williamsport and did
- 14:16Speaker 7: the Major League game, the Little League Classic between.
- 14:18Speaker 4: The Brewers and the Braves, and I flew home. How
- 14:20Speaker 4: about that for a week? Oh, my goodness.
- 14:22Speaker 2: You got my appetite wet now all of a sudden.
- 14:25Speaker 2: I was just in Philadelphia as well last year, but
- 14:27Speaker 2: it's going to happen maybe even as well. In October. Hey,
- 14:30Speaker 2: but Roxy, great to have you here as we're going
- 14:32Speaker 2: to get into some baseball stuff. You've also got the
- 14:35Speaker 2: college football side of things. I can't believe that we're
- 14:38Speaker 2: already here here for week negative one. I'll call that
- 14:40Speaker 2: maybe not week zero, but you're in Cal Poly here
- 14:43Speaker 2: for tonight for college football coverage. But I got to
- 14:47Speaker 2: first turn my attention here with you being around the
- 14:50Speaker 2: Bay Area a lot. What's your take right now and
- 14:54Speaker 2: what's going on in Santa Clara with Jed York?
- 14:59Speaker 4: Not a good week. I texted somebody that's prominent in
- 15:04Speaker 4: the 49ers front office. I'm like, oh, yikes.
- 15:08Speaker 7: And I just got a text back that was not ideal.
- 15:13Speaker 7: So it has been certainly a rough week and not just,
- 15:17Speaker 7: but a rough off season. And it's not just, okay,
- 15:20Speaker 7: certainly this Jed York game is pretty embarrassing for the organization.
- 15:25Speaker 7: But Kyle Shanahan had that car accident right before training
- 15:28Speaker 7: camp started where it was pretty serious, and luckily he's okay.
- 15:34Speaker 7: But that's what, unfortunately, offseason has been for the 49ers, right?
- 15:39Speaker 7: It's like they can't wait to play games because that
- 15:42Speaker 7: could be a distraction from what's going on off the field.
- 15:45Speaker 2: Do you really believe that he would sell the team,
- 15:47Speaker 2: Jed York?
- 15:47Speaker 4: I find it hard to believe. Look, he'll be on suspension,
- 15:54Speaker 4: and you can.
- 15:56Speaker 4: Think you can recover from this?
- 15:58Speaker 7: I mean, Robert Kraft had his transgression a number of
- 16:01Speaker 7: years ago, and that seems to have kind of gone away.
- 16:04Speaker 7: And it's certainly not an easy thing to try to
- 16:10Speaker 7: move on from. And luckily, I've never been and don't
- 16:13Speaker 7: plan on being in that situation. But it certainly.
- 16:17Speaker 4: Is tough right now for the organization.
- 16:21Speaker 7: I can't see it, Mike, where the 49ers and the
- 16:24Speaker 7: York family moves on from owning the 49ers. I know
- 16:27Speaker 7: he's sold off limited parts and small percentage of the
- 16:31Speaker 7: organization recently, but I anticipate Jed York still having the.
- 16:36Speaker 4: Majority interest of the 49ers moving forward.
- 16:39Speaker 2: Let's get on to baseball here because you've been around
- 16:40Speaker 2: this year for the entire year, matter of fact, for
- 16:43Speaker 2: much over the last several years. And, you know, at
- 16:45Speaker 2: least on the Mariners' side, they've got a massive series
- 16:47Speaker 2: coming up. They've all been massive really for, you know,
- 16:49Speaker 2: for about the last two months or so. But to
- 16:51Speaker 2: face the Blue Jays where they kind of feel like
- 16:54Speaker 2: that they've been resuscitated and they're back in this race
- 16:57Speaker 2: for a wildcard spot, the Mariners are not that much different.
- 17:01Speaker 2: And the division still may be even more of the
- 17:03Speaker 2: play than a wildcard berth. But for just how chaotic...
- 17:08Speaker 2: this American league West has been. And the fact that
- 17:11Speaker 2: somebody could legitimately win this division with a losing record,
- 17:17Speaker 2: give me one word to describe the Mariners this season,
- 17:19Speaker 2: Roxy and why.
- 17:22Speaker 7: Head scratching because this is the team you expected to
- 17:26Speaker 7: take that step forward, right? As close as they weren't
- 17:29Speaker 7: getting to the world series last year. And it's still
- 17:32Speaker 7: there for the taking because there's nobody in the American
- 17:35Speaker 7: League that if somehow Dan Wilson and the M's can
- 17:38Speaker 7: get into the postseason, which I still firmly believe they will,
- 17:42Speaker 7: that you get in a short series with the Mariners pitching.
- 17:46Speaker 7: That's a team you don't want to see. And they're
- 17:48Speaker 7: starting to maybe find their rhythm. It's been an uneven ride.
- 17:53Speaker 7: The injuries and things have just not clicked for this
- 17:57Speaker 7: team this year. But the benefit is when you look
- 18:00Speaker 7: at the schedule for September, it is very favorable for
- 18:05Speaker 7: the Mariners. This road trip, okay, you go to Toronto
- 18:08Speaker 7: and Boston, but you still have to play the A's
- 18:11Speaker 7: two series. And the A's are horrific, especially here toward
- 18:15Speaker 7: the end of the year. You have the Angels coming
- 18:18Speaker 7: to Seattle. You still have seven with them. You're playing
- 18:21Speaker 7: the Rockies for three in Denver, which, yeah, in Denver
- 18:24Speaker 7: can beat up.
- 18:24Speaker 4: Your pitching staff.
- 18:25Speaker 7: But you're also playing one of the bottom teams in
- 18:28Speaker 7: the league. And the pivotal series that you have in September,
- 18:31Speaker 7: other than those two games to finish off that series
- 18:34Speaker 7: with the Red Sox, are three with Texas at home.
- 18:38Speaker 7: And then a two-game pit stop with the Astros coming
- 18:42Speaker 7: to Seattle. The schedule is there in front of them. Now,
- 18:45Speaker 7: I know it's easier said than done, and these are
- 18:47Speaker 7: major leaguers. But you would think with the way the
- 18:50Speaker 7: September schedule sets up, it would bode well for the
- 18:53Speaker 7: Mariners to finish strong and get into the playoffs.
- 18:56Speaker 2: The pitching rotation as of today, you've got Logan Gilbert,
- 19:00Speaker 2: you've got George Kirby to pick from, Emerson Hancock will
- 19:03Speaker 2: go today, Brian Wu, Bryce Miller, despite his struggles, and
- 19:06Speaker 2: even he thinks that he's been hurt. And then the
- 19:09Speaker 2: young whippersnapper named Cade Anderson. Out of that three to
- 19:13Speaker 2: four guys for a playoff series, who do you like
- 19:16Speaker 2: the most?
- 19:18Speaker 4: Well, I think you're going to lean on the experience.
- 19:21Speaker 7: As electric as Kate Anderson could be, right? Here's the
- 19:24Speaker 7: young kid coming up. When you get in a short series,
- 19:27Speaker 7: like wildcard best two out of three. And unfortunately you
- 19:32Speaker 7: could be fighting up into the last day of the season, Mike.
- 19:35Speaker 7: So you may not be able to set it up
- 19:37Speaker 7: the way you want. If you wanted a Logan Gilbert
- 19:40Speaker 7: to go in game one, or if you wanted Brian
- 19:44Speaker 7: Wu to go in game one, you might not be
- 19:46Speaker 7: able to set it up the way you want. And again,
- 19:50Speaker 7: with that wild card series. Beginning on Tuesday. Assuming you
- 19:55Speaker 7: can get in.
- 19:55Speaker 4: It may just.
- 19:58Speaker 7: Be determined by who's next up in the rotation. So
- 20:01Speaker 7: it could be George Kirby. It could be Bryce Miller
- 20:04Speaker 7: that makes that start in game one. You may not
- 20:07Speaker 7: have the luxury to set it up the way you
- 20:09Speaker 7: want just because you're going to be fighting potentially up
- 20:12Speaker 7: until that last Sunday of the regular season.
- 20:14Speaker 2: With the Blue Jays are putting Dylan Cease out tonight.
- 20:17Speaker 2: Is he going to win the AL Cy Young?
- 20:20Speaker 4: I think he needs to be in that conversation.
- 20:23Speaker 7: Because what he has done this year and look the
- 20:26Speaker 7: blue jays have had a disappointing season but he has
- 20:31Speaker 7: certainly not been somebody that you're disappointed in with their
- 20:35Speaker 7: performance they got him for a reason and it's not
- 20:38Speaker 7: his fault and what's going on with the blue jays
- 20:41Speaker 7: he's pitched great just about every single turn that he
- 20:44Speaker 7: has made but this is a team that I think
- 20:49Speaker 7: a lot was expected of them, but you can't point
- 20:51Speaker 7: the finger in his direction. There is other reasons why
- 20:55Speaker 7: this team has struggled. I think you need to look
- 20:58Speaker 7: at Sonny Gray. I think his name needs to be
- 21:00Speaker 7: in that conversation. Certainly Cam Schlittler. And look, we saw
- 21:05Speaker 7: it last year, especially in the postseason when he did
- 21:07Speaker 7: the Red Sox.
- 21:09Speaker 4: This is a young burgeoning star.
- 21:10Speaker 7: And even a guy like Nick Martinez from Tampa, Mike,
- 21:15Speaker 7: he's been a revelation. Like all of a sudden, here's
- 21:19Speaker 7: a veteran pitcher that's just put things together this year
- 21:21Speaker 7: and had an unbelievable year. And he will draw consideration.
- 21:26Speaker 7: But for me, I think the top three names, when
- 21:29Speaker 7: you look at are, as you alluded to cease, even
- 21:32Speaker 7: though he doesn't have the wins and that's become a
- 21:35Speaker 7: less valued stat these days. But Cease, with that sparkling ERA,
- 21:40Speaker 7: Sonny Gray, and Cam Schlittler, those are the top three
- 21:43Speaker 7: in my eyes in the American League.
- 21:44Speaker 2: You know what's crazy about the Blue Jays? I thought
- 21:46Speaker 2: they were dead about roughly a month ago, but here
- 21:48Speaker 2: they come once again. They went on a heater and
- 21:50Speaker 2: it's maybe cooled off a little bit. They've got injury issues.
- 21:53Speaker 2: I mean, Trey is savage. I point to Addison Barger
- 21:56Speaker 2: as well, just among many examples. But given the fact
- 21:59Speaker 2: that the playoff format has expanded, there's still a feel
- 22:03Speaker 2: that they're very much in the mix. How much do
- 22:07Speaker 2: you think that they're for real here for this stretch drive.
- 22:11Speaker 4: Well, we kept waiting for it a lot like the Mariners, right?
- 22:13Speaker 7: We kept waiting for this team to get going and
- 22:16Speaker 7: Vladimir Guerrero jr.
- 22:17Speaker 4: Hasn't had the great year, but here they are.
- 22:20Speaker 7: All of a sudden they put themselves back into contention
- 22:24Speaker 7: and that the whole American league, this thing is going
- 22:26Speaker 7: to be wild. The next few weeks, what you have
- 22:29Speaker 7: five teams that are above 500 in the AL and
- 22:33Speaker 7: And that race for the third wild card, Cleveland's got it.
- 22:36Speaker 7: Now they're, they're on a surge. The guardians have won
- 22:38Speaker 7: seven in a row and they've Steven votes team has
- 22:41Speaker 7: climbed a couple of games over 500 and.
- 22:43Speaker 2: Thank you for the Azusa Pacific drop-in, by the way.
- 22:46Speaker 2: I appreciate you.
- 22:47Speaker 4: Exactly. Come on.
- 22:50Speaker 7: Vote with my guy in Oakland. You go back to
- 22:52Speaker 7: the college days with Steven. But they used to chant
- 22:56Speaker 7: in the bleachers in Oakland, in the artist formerly known
- 22:59Speaker 7: as the Oakland Athletics.
- 23:02Speaker 4: I believe in Steven Vogt.
- 23:04Speaker 9: And.
- 23:05Speaker 7: He's done a phenomenal job. Look, manager of the year,
- 23:08Speaker 7: back-to-back years. And the Guardians now are off the deck
- 23:11Speaker 7: and back in the running. But they're thinking about the Central.
- 23:15Speaker 7: But this whole wildcard chase, there's a little bit of
- 23:17Speaker 7: separation right now. But that can change in a matter
- 23:20Speaker 7: of two days. Because Cleveland's got that spot right now.
- 23:24Speaker 4: But there's Texas. There's the Orioles who put themselves in trouble.
- 23:27Speaker 4: to contention.
- 23:28Speaker 7: You got the Jays who played their way back in
- 23:30Speaker 7: the Mariners, the twins, even the tigers with the trades
- 23:33Speaker 7: that they made of mys and Scooble at the deadline
- 23:37Speaker 7: are still kind of hovering, even if they're nine games
- 23:41Speaker 7: below 500, the tigers are the crazy team. When you
- 23:45Speaker 7: look at the numbers, Mike, because every team that I mentioned,
- 23:48Speaker 7: that's in the hunt for the third wild card spot,
- 23:51Speaker 7: has a negative run differential for the season, except for
- 23:55Speaker 7: the Tigers. And even though Detroit is nine games under,
- 23:58Speaker 7: their run differential is a plus 70.
- 24:01Speaker 4: It's insane.
- 24:02Speaker 2: And they traded off the best pitcher maybe at the deadline,
- 24:04Speaker 2: and here they are still right in the thick.
- 24:05Speaker 4: Of it, right?
- 24:06Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 24:08Speaker 4: And it's a credit to that team and to what A.J.
- 24:12Speaker 4: Hinch has done. And they've had a ton of injuries,
- 24:15Speaker 4: what they've dealt with all season long. But yet, here
- 24:18Speaker 4: they are.
- 24:19Speaker 7: They realize that the likelihood of Scooble coming back was
- 24:22Speaker 7: not a probable reality. So they make the trade at
- 24:27Speaker 7: the deadline and send him off to the Dodgers, and
- 24:29Speaker 7: they're kind of retooling, but.
- 24:32Speaker 4: I think it's awfully tough for.
- 24:33Speaker 7: Them to get in, but that wild card hunt in
- 24:36Speaker 7: the American league, it is crazy with all these teams.
- 24:38Speaker 4: Those last two weeks are going to be nuts to watch.
- 24:40Speaker 2: Astros a game up right now on the Rangers. The Mariners,
- 24:43Speaker 2: of course, three games back up first place in the
- 24:45Speaker 2: American league West and Roxy to you Astros or Rangers.
- 24:49Speaker 2: Who's the greater challenge here for the Mariners with about
- 24:51Speaker 2: one month ago.
- 24:54Speaker 7: I think it's Houston on, not just because there are
- 24:56Speaker 7: three games in front in first place right now. Um,
- 25:00Speaker 7: When you have maybe the best player in baseball going
- 25:04Speaker 7: right now, it's Jordan Alvarez in the lineup. That makes
- 25:07Speaker 7: it certainly a threat. But I have questions about their
- 25:10Speaker 7: pitching as I do with Texas. And it's just like
- 25:15Speaker 7: I posed this question the other night to Doug Glanville
- 25:18Speaker 7: when we were doing Sunday night baseball in Williamsport. about
- 25:23Speaker 7: the Mariners. And like I asked him, am I wrong
- 25:26Speaker 7: for buying a team at the time? I think the
- 25:28Speaker 7: M's were what, maybe nine under or eight under if
- 25:31Speaker 7: I'm wrong for buying them and thinking they could be
- 25:34Speaker 7: potentially the team to beat, but the talents there, we
- 25:38Speaker 7: know it. And it just hasn't happened for this team yet.
- 25:43Speaker 7: And now how Raleigh's getting hot. This is maybe the
- 25:46Speaker 7: stretch where we finally get to see the Mariners team.
- 25:49Speaker 7: We thought If they lay out that schedule in September, Mike,
- 25:53Speaker 7: it's there for the taking. The division is theirs to
- 25:56Speaker 7: be grabbed if they can go and run with it.
- 25:58Speaker 2: Again, Cal really getting hot certainly is a big key.
- 26:01Speaker 2: And we saw a lot from him in the first
- 26:02Speaker 2: couple of games of this Philly series. And maybe they
- 26:05Speaker 2: punted this final game, but for the greater good, because
- 26:08Speaker 2: you got 10 days in a row where you're on
- 26:11Speaker 2: the road. Guys can get banged up even more here.
- 26:14Speaker 2: So certainly that is right place, right time. I wanted
- 26:16Speaker 2: to also address Julio Rodriguez with you, Mike. A lot
- 26:20Speaker 2: of ups, a lot of downs for him for this
- 26:22Speaker 2: entire season. OPS in the last two weeks is like 535,
- 26:27Speaker 2: hitting just 183 in that case. We had a lot
- 26:30Speaker 2: of talk on our airwaves about the mental mistakes he had,
- 26:34Speaker 2: throwing the ball over the fence with two outs. Then
- 26:39Speaker 2: he had the pitch clock violation because he was throwing
- 26:43Speaker 2: the ball back and forth with fans from behind the fence.
- 26:46Speaker 6: And then.
- 26:47Speaker 2: First game of the Philadelphia series, the statement he made
- 26:50Speaker 2: hitting an absolute taser off of Zach Wheeler just sent
- 26:53Speaker 2: shockwaves here throughout this entire crowd that was in that ballpark.
- 26:58Speaker 2: Do you think we'll get to a point with him
- 27:00Speaker 2: being that it just seems kind of like we're asking
- 27:04Speaker 2: for more, but he's always had great defense. He proved
- 27:07Speaker 2: a lot in the postseason last year, but to a
- 27:10Speaker 2: point where he gets into that megastar tier with the
- 27:14Speaker 2: likes of, say, Acuna, Tatis, Soto, et cetera.
- 27:21Speaker 7: And look, he's such a dynamic player with all the things.
- 27:26Speaker 7: He's a five tool guy, right? He can do everything.
- 27:30Speaker 4: On the field.
- 27:31Speaker 7: And he's keep in mind, he's still 25. Like this is,
- 27:36Speaker 7: we all, maybe we're expecting too much from him. And look,
- 27:41Speaker 7: the expectations are fair because the Mariners invested in him.
- 27:45Speaker 7: And gave him the long contract. And we have seen
- 27:48Speaker 7: the glimpses of it. When you look what he's done.
- 27:50Speaker 7: The big moments where he has responded. Whether it's been
- 27:54Speaker 7: the home run derby. The all-star game. When the bright
- 27:57Speaker 7: lights have come on. He's been there. And you want
- 28:01Speaker 7: to duplicate what he did in his second year.
- 28:03Speaker 9: When the.
- 28:05Speaker 7: Numbers were just incredible. With the RBIs. Stolen bases. And
- 28:11Speaker 7: the average has decreased slightly. In each of the last years.
- 28:14Speaker 7: three years since that great 2023. But this is a
- 28:19Speaker 7: cornerstone for this franchise. And to get the best out
- 28:23Speaker 7: of him, I'm not sure what buttons need to be
- 28:25Speaker 7: pushed because we've seen the dramatic moments from him, but
- 28:29Speaker 7: yet there's been some frustration.
- 28:31Speaker 4: But that's In a lot of ways, that's baseball, Mike, right?
- 28:34Speaker 7: It's 162 games and you're going to go through your
- 28:36Speaker 7: highs and you're going to go through your lows and
- 28:38Speaker 7: you're going to have to adjust. And maybe he's in
- 28:40Speaker 7: a period where he needs to adjust and figure some
- 28:42Speaker 7: things out what's going to work better for him. But
- 28:45Speaker 7: this is an elite talent that has the ability to
- 28:48Speaker 7: carry a team for a couple of weeks and carry
- 28:50Speaker 7: a team in a playoff series. And that's why the
- 28:53Speaker 7: Mariners have been committed to him and why you've given him,
- 28:57Speaker 7: the Seattle Mariners, the money and the length of the contract,
- 29:00Speaker 7: which they've done with him.
- 29:01Speaker 2: Fans have seen that before from him, and they're looking
- 29:04Speaker 2: to see it again with a little over a month
- 29:06Speaker 2: now to go in the season. So, hey, finally, college
- 29:09Speaker 2: football's here, and you're at Cal Poly. As far as
- 29:13Speaker 2: me being a beach guy, I'm jealous, so I would
- 29:15Speaker 2: assume before you get out to... The stadium, you've got
- 29:18Speaker 2: about a few hours of soaking over at Pismo Beach, right?
- 29:21Speaker 2: Working the suntan a little bit?
- 29:24Speaker 4: Not today. This is grind day, Mike.
- 29:27Speaker 2: I'm grinding.
- 29:28Speaker 4: Game night.
- 29:29Speaker 2: You're a pro's pro.
- 29:30Speaker 6: Game day.
- 29:31Speaker 2: You're a pro's pro, man.
- 29:32Speaker 7: I was able to slip down to the beach on
- 29:34Speaker 7: Thursday or Wednesday.
- 29:36Speaker 4: I did that because it's a Friday night. My days
- 29:38Speaker 4: are thrown off.
- 29:38Speaker 2: Beauty, beauty, working smart. It's going to be not too
- 29:41Speaker 2: long before we see you back in these parts. Once again,
- 29:43Speaker 2: you got the NHL side of things also. So we'll
- 29:47Speaker 2: look forward to crossing paths, but man, appreciate you. Have
- 29:49Speaker 2: a good call tonight, man.
- 29:51Speaker 4: Thanks, man. Appreciate it, Mike. Catch up as always.
- 29:54Speaker 2: Roxy Bernstein of ESPN joining us on the Beacon Plumbing Hotline. Yeah,
- 29:59Speaker 2: I mean, with the battle over a month ago, not
- 30:03Speaker 2: just Cal Raleigh, but can Julio minimize the mistakes? Because
- 30:06Speaker 2: we've seen what he's been capable of, not just offensively,
- 30:10Speaker 2: but as well with the bat. And this is kind
- 30:12Speaker 2: of where I stop before going too far with, I think,
- 30:17Speaker 2: the mental side of things, Jess, with Julio, because do
- 30:19Speaker 2: you remember what the clubhouse sounded like after Game 7
- 30:23Speaker 2: in Toronto last year?
- 30:24Speaker 6: Yep.
- 30:24Speaker 2: Whose primal scream that was?
- 30:26Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 30:27Speaker 2: You can't tell me he doesn't care. You cannot tell
- 30:30Speaker 2: me Julio does not care.
- 30:31Speaker 6: Yep.
- 30:34Speaker 5: I mean, I think it's the perception of the lackadaisical
- 30:38Speaker 5: mistakes that he has made make it look like that.
- 30:41Speaker 3: But he's loose. He's calm. He's cool. He's collected.
- 30:44Speaker 5: He's not a Josh Naylor. I am angry all the time.
- 30:47Speaker 5: That's not what you see. But that scream after that.
- 30:50Speaker 9: Yep.
- 30:51Speaker 3: I do remember that.
- 30:52Speaker 2: That's just the thing. It's not also just with baseball,
- 30:55Speaker 2: but really any sport. You can't have a clubhouse or
- 30:58Speaker 2: a locker room or a dressing room, as they say
- 31:00Speaker 2: in the NHL, that is just one side one way
- 31:03Speaker 2: or one side or the other. I mean, if you're
- 31:06Speaker 2: too loose, you have no focus. If you're too uptight, well,
- 31:08Speaker 2: you know, you can't play. What do we say? I mean,
- 31:11Speaker 2: what was the opposite of, you know, too loose? It
- 31:14Speaker 2: was Jarrett Kelnick, who wasn't in this town, you know,
- 31:17Speaker 2: too long ago. But you need that balance, right? in
- 31:21Speaker 2: your clubhouse to be able to go a long, long
- 31:24Speaker 2: way and to be able to regulate yourselves emotionally. So,
- 31:27Speaker 2: I mean, Julio, yeah, it was certainly a massive mistake
- 31:29Speaker 2: of what he made two of them as well. But
- 31:32Speaker 2: for a player who we've seen before show up in
- 31:34Speaker 2: crunch time, this is going to be foot to the gas,
- 31:38Speaker 2: pedal to metal time coming up for this series in Toronto.
- 31:41Speaker 2: But big thanks again to Roxy Bernstein. We'll shift our
- 31:44Speaker 2: focus here.
- 31:45Speaker 7: To the NHL.
- 31:47Speaker 2: Mackie Samaskevich now in town for the Seattle Kraken. How
- 31:51Speaker 2: is he settling in? Our chat from 32 Bar and
- 31:54Speaker 2: Grill at Kraken Community Ice Plex right around the corner here.
- 31:59Speaker 2: Mike Jessaman in for Greg Bell on 93.3 KJRFM. Just
- 32:25Speaker 2: 24 hours ago, it was one of the greatest days
- 32:28Speaker 2: for me in recent memory because the primary part of
- 32:32Speaker 2: my job and what I do here at this radio station, again,
- 32:35Speaker 2: Mike and Jessamyn in for Greg Bell. is get a
- 32:38Speaker 2: chance to tell a story on the NHL scale. I've
- 32:40Speaker 2: been an NHL guy, a hockey guy for years, and
- 32:44Speaker 2: to get a chance to work on the broadcasting tier
- 32:48Speaker 2: at this league, when I got this job five years ago,
- 32:50Speaker 2: it made my dreams come true.
- 32:52Speaker 6: Legitimately.
- 32:53Speaker 2: And yesterday, it was a reaffirmation of just how important
- 32:57Speaker 2: the stories that we tell matters for this team and
- 33:01Speaker 2: matters for fans in this city when... The Kraken and
- 33:04Speaker 2: all of iHeartMedia Seattle announced a multi-year extension to carry
- 33:10Speaker 2: Kraken games, play-by-play, much more of under the hood as
- 33:13Speaker 2: far as how this coverage works and the broadcast partnership, radio,
- 33:17Speaker 2: and all of that. But all that going down. Yesterday,
- 33:20Speaker 2: Ian was over at 32 Bar and Grill, and we
- 33:22Speaker 2: also had a great chance to podcast myself, Everett Fitzhugh,
- 33:26Speaker 2: Al Kaniski, to kind of talk more about how much
- 33:28Speaker 2: this means, but also Give you dear listener. And if
- 33:32Speaker 2: you're a course dialed in here with this hockey team,
- 33:35Speaker 2: A bit of a preview as far as how this
- 33:37Speaker 2: team is evolving, and much of it will and could
- 33:40Speaker 2: revolve around youth. Mackie Samaskevich is a big part of that.
- 33:45Speaker 2: The Kraken got him in a trade from the Florida Panthers.
- 33:48Speaker 2: He comes over from that dressing room. That's at back-to-back
- 33:52Speaker 2: rings already for many players on that roster. It cost
- 33:55Speaker 2: the Kraken a first-round pick in this last year's draft
- 33:59Speaker 2: and a conditional second-rounder from this next season. It was
- 34:03Speaker 2: a trade that was made based on projection, not from resume.
- 34:08Speaker 2: Career high for him so far, 15 goals, but he's
- 34:10Speaker 2: only played two NHL seasons, and many are saying he's
- 34:13Speaker 2: still got a great chance to pop as a top six,
- 34:17Speaker 2: maybe even top-line guy as well. And he's had also
- 34:20Speaker 2: a great history going back with Matty Beneers. But Mackie Samuskevich,
- 34:23Speaker 2: who is in town now, join me, Everett Fitzhugh, Al Kaniski,
- 34:30Speaker 2: Here are his first impressions of Seattle in our chat
- 34:32Speaker 2: at 32 Barn Grill. Very well.
- 34:35Speaker 9: I just moved here a couple days ago, and it's
- 34:36Speaker 9: gone really well so far. I was obviously excited when
- 34:40Speaker 9: the news came in the summer. It was one team
- 34:44Speaker 9: that I definitely hated playing against, so it was nice
- 34:46Speaker 9: to kind of finally join them. And I know some guys, too,
- 34:49Speaker 9: so that helped out a lot. And, you know, I'm
- 34:52Speaker 9: excited with this group for sure.
- 34:53Speaker 2: You know, we often hear about when players move out here,
- 34:56Speaker 2: there's the nature component of this here they've been around
- 34:59Speaker 2: the building obviously this team's been here for about five
- 35:01Speaker 2: years so they understand what game night feels like how
- 35:05Speaker 2: much a crowd can really get you going you know
- 35:07Speaker 2: home team or road team as well too but you
- 35:09Speaker 2: know just checking out your surroundings what have you seen
- 35:12Speaker 2: what have you heard also as far as what you're
- 35:13Speaker 2: going to be playing around here for seattle um you.
- 35:16Speaker 9: Know i i've heard the the fans love it um
- 35:19Speaker 9: i heard that you know it gets pretty rowdy in
- 35:22Speaker 9: there and i witnessed it you know firsthand um They
- 35:25Speaker 9: beat up on us pretty good that one game, but
- 35:28Speaker 9: we definitely want to bring back playoff hockey to them.
- 35:34Speaker 9: They show up in the regular season, it seems, so
- 35:36Speaker 9: I'd love to see a playoff game there. That's definitely
- 35:39Speaker 9: a goal in mind, and I'm just excited to get
- 35:42Speaker 9: in front of them for sure.
- 35:44Speaker 10: A lot is made about your speed and the type
- 35:45Speaker 10: of player that you are, but for fans who might
- 35:47Speaker 10: not know, who are you as a player? What are
- 35:50Speaker 10: fans going to be able to see on a nightly basis?
- 35:53Speaker 2: I play with a lot of speed.
- 35:55Speaker 9: That's, you know, my strong suit, I'd say. You know,
- 35:59Speaker 9: I got young legs still, so I buzz around pretty good. So,
- 36:03Speaker 9: you know, they'll definitely see that. I love to shoot
- 36:05Speaker 9: the puck, too. That's, I'd say, probably my strongest. You know,
- 36:09Speaker 9: I shoot the puck all day, so I hope it's
- 36:12Speaker 9: pretty good. But, no, it's a lot of speed. I
- 36:16Speaker 9: love to make plays to use my teammates. You know,
- 36:20Speaker 9: I think it's a fun game to watch.
- 36:22Speaker 10: You won a championship, you've played with Matthew Kachuk, you've
- 36:26Speaker 10: played with Barkov, you've played with Bennett, a lot of
- 36:28Speaker 10: really strong generational players. How do you feel they've helped
- 36:32Speaker 10: influence your game and how excited are you now to
- 36:35Speaker 10: be able to showcase that talent and to run a
- 36:39Speaker 10: line of your own, to be faced in that same
- 36:42Speaker 10: situation as they were?
- 36:44Speaker 9: Yeah, it was really cool for the last two years
- 36:46Speaker 9: seeing those guys, how they go about their business, how
- 36:50Speaker 9: hard they play, how They do all the hard things right,
- 36:54Speaker 9: and I think that's why they're so good. Obviously, the
- 36:58Speaker 9: system we play in there, it works in playoffs too,
- 37:02Speaker 9: so I'm hoping to bring that, hoping to bring some
- 37:08Speaker 9: hard playoff hockey kind of play to the game.
- 37:13Speaker 2: I learned a lot from those guys, so I'm excited.
- 37:16Speaker 11: Mackie, give people a sense for what's been going on
- 37:19Speaker 11: with you in the offseason. You know, your season comes
- 37:21Speaker 11: to an end with Florida. Most guys take a little
- 37:24Speaker 11: bit of time off and then you start getting back
- 37:26Speaker 11: into training and stuff. But give people a sense for
- 37:28Speaker 11: what's happened between end of the season and you said
- 37:31Speaker 11: you just moved into town two days ago.
- 37:32Speaker 2: Right.
- 37:34Speaker 9: Right away, I take a couple weeks off, go on vacation,
- 37:38Speaker 9: see old friends, kind of just you know, uncharged a
- 37:42Speaker 9: little bit, and, you know, reflected a little bit on
- 37:45Speaker 9: the year, what you could have done better, what you
- 37:47Speaker 9: did really well, and, you know, play a lot of golf, too, so, but,
- 37:53Speaker 9: you know, I started skating, like, June 1, started working out, too,
- 37:56Speaker 9: you know, and then it's a long summer, but It's
- 37:59Speaker 9: a good thing because you get a lot of time
- 38:01Speaker 9: to really get better, and I felt like I did
- 38:03Speaker 9: get a lot better this summer.
- 38:04Speaker 4: Where did you spend the summer?
- 38:06Speaker 2: In Connecticut. That's where I grew up.
- 38:07Speaker 9: Nice.
- 38:08Speaker 11: So are you going to miss the humidity on the
- 38:10Speaker 11: East Coast?
- 38:11Speaker 4: No, not at all.
- 38:12Speaker 9: Not at all.
- 38:12Speaker 2: Especially in Florida, too. It's really bad down there. Mackie,
- 38:16Speaker 2: we talk about the opportunities that you'll get here. Given
- 38:19Speaker 2: the fact that you still have a lot of miles
- 38:21Speaker 2: to go in the NHL, the numbers are getting up.
- 38:23Speaker 2: There's obviously promise and potential, but to you personally, What
- 38:27Speaker 2: defines the season that you want for yourself this year?
- 38:32Speaker 9: I think number one is play-in, play-off hockey, like I said.
- 38:36Speaker 9: I think that's one of my strong suits is how
- 38:39Speaker 9: competitive I am and how much I want to win.
- 38:42Speaker 9: Everyone's happy when we win, so definitely that. I think
- 38:48Speaker 9: that's the only goal really coming into the season. All
- 38:51Speaker 9: the personal goals and all that is nice, but If
- 38:55Speaker 9: you miss the playoffs, it's not fun. I got a
- 38:57Speaker 9: taste of that last year. I want to come in
- 39:00Speaker 9: and help this team win and have.
- 39:03Speaker 2: Fun doing it. When fans hear that you love to
- 39:07Speaker 2: shoot the puck, that's music to their ears. They love
- 39:09Speaker 2: guys who can snipe. We hear about guys who come
- 39:12Speaker 2: up the ranks. It might be in the levels of
- 39:15Speaker 2: junior or for you, college hockey as well. skill building
- 39:19Speaker 2: means a lot and I've heard stories of guys who
- 39:22Speaker 2: shoot 400, 500 pucks a day sometimes. What's the most
- 39:26Speaker 2: that you've shot one day?
- 39:27Speaker 9: I usually to when i was younger i'd try to
- 39:31Speaker 9: get 10 000 shots in a summer wow that was
- 39:35Speaker 9: the goal like i count all the pucks in the
- 39:37Speaker 9: bucket and i just kind of trip away at that
- 39:40Speaker 9: and um my hands were definitely hurt after and my
- 39:43Speaker 9: forearms would be fired up but it's uh.
- 39:45Speaker 2: It definitely went a long way so what was your
- 39:46Speaker 2: setup like then I got a rink in the.
- 39:49Speaker 9: Backyard at home.
- 39:50Speaker 2: My parents built it when I was very young.
- 39:52Speaker 9: They put ice in the winter and then in the
- 39:56Speaker 9: summer you get a shooting pad out there and be
- 39:59Speaker 9: out there all day before school, after school. So I'm
- 40:02Speaker 9: definitely lucky to have that set up for sure.
- 40:05Speaker 2: I remember when I was eight or nine years of age,
- 40:08Speaker 2: and I took a lot of pride in just getting
- 40:10Speaker 2: through 99 bottles of beer on the wall. That song
- 40:14Speaker 2: in the summer. You imagine shooting 10,000 pucks.
- 40:17Speaker 3: My goodness, that's Steph Curry-ish.
- 40:20Speaker 2: 49451, how happy would you be with Mackie Samuskevich hitting
- 40:23Speaker 2: 20 goals this year? He loves to shoot the puck.
- 40:25Speaker 2: He wants to be that guy. and maybe brazen for
- 40:29Speaker 2: this roster, but yet here's a young player at 23
- 40:34Speaker 2: years of age. He knows he's going to get a
- 40:35Speaker 2: bigger role than what he had in Florida. He wants
- 40:37Speaker 2: to be one of those guys where you call him
- 40:39Speaker 2: that guy, and he's talking about playoffs. Maybe a high bar,
- 40:44Speaker 2: but is that what you want from your room as
- 40:47Speaker 2: far as setting goals? You never know. Lane Lambert's back again.
- 40:51Speaker 2: I will contend, I will argue, best thing to happen
- 40:55Speaker 2: to this team from this last year, dragging them right
- 40:59Speaker 2: into the fight for a long, long time.
- 41:00Speaker 3: 49451.
- 41:03Speaker 2: More of that conversation, by the way, at the Kraken
- 41:05Speaker 2: Audio Network side of the iHeartRadio app. Funny story also
- 41:08Speaker 2: that Mackie Samaskevich had. He met Matty Benirez as a
- 41:11Speaker 2: youth hockey player. And when he went in to play
- 41:14Speaker 2: against him in a tournament, went into the wrong dressing room,
- 41:18Speaker 2: and Matty was right there saying, are you sure you're
- 41:20Speaker 2: in the right place, man? He said, I kept that
- 41:24Speaker 2: story to myself. And that may be coming out here
- 41:26Speaker 2: to kind of break the ice, so to speak, for
- 41:29Speaker 2: for those two guys. But he's living with Matty Beneers
- 41:31Speaker 2: telling us. And as far as a pickup, one that's
- 41:34Speaker 2: got a lot of potential and a great future as well.
- 41:37Speaker 2: We'll take a break. A view from the other side
- 41:39Speaker 2: up next here for the Seahawks and Chiefs from the sideline.
- 41:42Speaker 2: And as well, the national view on the Mariners' playoff hopes.
- 41:47Speaker 2: Josh Klingler, followed by Ryan Spielberg. They're up next here
- 41:51Speaker 2: on 93.3 KJRFM.
- 42:06Speaker 1: Now, from the Star Reynolds Sports Desk, your 93.3 KJR
- 42:09Speaker 1: FM Sports Headlines.
- 42:11Speaker 2: All right, let's get after it here. Headlines are brought
- 42:13Speaker 2: to you by Frostbrewed Coors Light, as cold as the Rockies.
- 42:17Speaker 2: The Seahawks in Kansas City for the third and final
- 42:20Speaker 2: preseason game tonight. They will not play any of their
- 42:23Speaker 2: 22 starters. Jalen Milrow, you're going to see him from
- 42:27Speaker 2: start to finish under center the entire game. Kickoff, by
- 42:31Speaker 2: the way, at 5 o'clock Pacific time in Kansas City.
- 42:35Speaker 2: Leonard Williams making his contract extension official yesterday, signing a three-year,
- 42:41Speaker 2: $ 90 million deal alongside his wife and five-month-old son. What
- 42:47Speaker 2: a story, what a presence as well for him who
- 42:49Speaker 2: is now committed to to Seattle for the longer term.
- 42:52Speaker 2: Mariners day off yesterday, went cross country. They'll take on
- 42:56Speaker 2: the Toronto Blue Jays. Three game series opening tonight, and
- 43:00Speaker 2: they got a big hill to climb with Dylan Cease
- 43:03Speaker 2: on the other side on the mound for 15 first pitch.
- 43:07Speaker 2: You can watch that game, by the way, on Apple TV.
- 43:10Speaker 2: Ryan Spielberg's from the Apple TV crew will be with
- 43:13Speaker 2: us a little bit later on. Out of the show
- 43:15Speaker 2: we go. You know, when I think of preseason football,
- 43:26Speaker 2: of course, I think of depth. And you want depth,
- 43:30Speaker 2: you got depth. Mike Jessaman in for Greg Bell here
- 43:33Speaker 2: for today. Greg, by the way, on a plane to
- 43:35Speaker 2: Kansas City at the moment because the Seahawks and the
- 43:39Speaker 2: Chiefs will be getting after it. 5 o'clock kickoff Pacific
- 43:43Speaker 2: time here for tonight. And without further ado, a great
- 43:46Speaker 2: chance to go to the other side of things. Josh
- 43:49Speaker 2: Klingler of the Chiefs Radio Network. Pleased to have you
- 43:53Speaker 2: along with us here on the Beacon Plumbing Hotline. Josh,
- 43:57Speaker 2: you and I meeting here, by the way, thank you
- 43:59Speaker 2: very much for doing this. Appreciate your time. It has
- 44:02Speaker 2: been a while, by the way, since I had been
- 44:04Speaker 2: to Kansas City, and it has been too long since
- 44:08Speaker 2: I had been to Kansas City. But my fondest memory.
- 44:11Speaker 2: was when I was starting out my career and going
- 44:14Speaker 2: out to the old municipal auditorium, the Muni, as they
- 44:19Speaker 2: call it back there, for the NAI Final Four, quote-unquote,
- 44:22Speaker 2: so to speak, and I was doing TV sideline as
- 44:25Speaker 2: well and still in college, but outside of that venue,
- 44:30Speaker 2: I have never had better barbecue in my whole life.
- 44:34Speaker 2: I will take Arthur Bryant's to my grave. You, KC
- 44:39Speaker 2: Barbecue Recommendations, what you got, my man?
- 44:42Speaker 12: Well, the problem, the problem is here you step in somebody's,
- 44:45Speaker 12: you know, somebody's sauce if you're picking one, right? So
- 44:50Speaker 12: you got to get a, you got to get a,
- 44:51Speaker 12: you got to get a sampler platter from like all
- 44:53Speaker 12: over town, just kind of pop in and, and, and
- 44:56Speaker 12: do a little bit from everybody.
- 44:57Speaker 6: It's amazing.
- 44:57Speaker 12: Like places still open up in Kansas city that are
- 45:00Speaker 12: barbecue places.
- 45:01Speaker 6: And I'm thinking, what are you doing?
- 45:03Speaker 12: Like, I feel like we have enough, like there's, there's
- 45:06Speaker 12: always one like cropping up and giving it a shot
- 45:08Speaker 12: or someone's told them they were really good on the
- 45:10Speaker 12: grill and So they're trying it themselves. So we do
- 45:14Speaker 12: have some that kind of come and go, but then
- 45:15Speaker 12: there's always the staples. But, yeah, you can't walk around
- 45:19Speaker 12: and really find anything bad. And then you get the
- 45:21Speaker 12: parking lot barbecue on a game day.
- 45:23Speaker 2: Yeah, oh, goodness, yes.
- 45:25Speaker 12: That's just the people showing off their expertise. So, yeah,
- 45:29Speaker 12: you can get well fed when you're in town here
- 45:31Speaker 12: for sure. I love how you said this is the
- 45:34Speaker 12: preseason and it's about depth because I've been warning people
- 45:36Speaker 12: about that too.
- 45:36Speaker 6: It's like you've got to remember the preseason is for them.
- 45:40Speaker 12: Like, you know, coaches and the second and third and
- 45:43Speaker 12: guys really trying to, you know, make a living in this.
- 45:45Speaker 6: Not necessarily for the fans. And it gets a little
- 45:48Speaker 6: bit boring at times.
- 45:49Speaker 12: Certainly, it's been kind of a boring preseason here in
- 45:51Speaker 12: Kansas City because, yeah, we haven't really seen anybody play
- 45:54Speaker 12: and kind of rightfully so.
- 45:57Speaker 2: Yeah, and before I get to that, we've heard Shatter,
- 46:01Speaker 2: you know, begin to elevate more and more just about,
- 46:03Speaker 2: you know, what's the ultimate meaning of life when it
- 46:05Speaker 2: comes to preseason? Because we see now the Pro Bowl
- 46:08Speaker 2: go the way of the Buffalo, and now there's talk
- 46:11Speaker 2: of what do you do now for the preseason? Could it,
- 46:13Speaker 2: you know, legitimately be around, say, 15 years down the road?
- 46:16Speaker 2: But from your perspective, you've been around, you know, that
- 46:20Speaker 2: locker room. What's your view? What have you taken in
- 46:23Speaker 2: as far as reaction to the importance and the meaning
- 46:26Speaker 2: of preseason?
- 46:28Speaker 12: Well, I mean, I think this particular team did not
- 46:31Speaker 12: have the season that they thought they were going to
- 46:32Speaker 12: have last year. And so certainly for the returning guys,
- 46:35Speaker 12: they wanted to get back after and get to it.
- 46:37Speaker 12: Not necessarily about the game perspective, but they hit camp
- 46:40Speaker 12: really hard. And Andy Reid really, really put them through it.
- 46:44Speaker 12: You know, up until the, I think they had eight
- 46:48Speaker 12: straight days, seven straight days, something like that, in pads.
- 46:50Speaker 12: It was kind of crazy where you're like, man, he's
- 46:53Speaker 12: really pushing them.
- 46:54Speaker 6: But he wants to build a physical... more physical team
- 46:58Speaker 6: than they certainly had a season ago.
- 47:00Speaker 12: And then for the veteran guys, yeah, they've just been,
- 47:03Speaker 12: you know, they were not happy to have that extra
- 47:05Speaker 12: long offseason. I think they tried to all make a
- 47:07Speaker 12: positive out of it. But, you know, this is a
- 47:09Speaker 12: team that's been used to playing in the playoffs and
- 47:11Speaker 12: been playing deep in the playoffs. And to be on
- 47:13Speaker 12: the outside looking in, it was kind of unfamiliar times.
- 47:16Speaker 12: So I think the preseason was perfect for them because
- 47:18Speaker 12: they needed to get back, get back out there, at
- 47:20Speaker 12: least on the practice field, and get after it because
- 47:22Speaker 12: they felt like that stuff was kind of unresolved at
- 47:25Speaker 12: the end of last year.
- 47:27Speaker 2: Josh Klingler joining us in the Beacon Plumbing Hotline, a
- 47:29Speaker 2: part of the Chiefs Radio Network. And Josh, part of
- 47:32Speaker 2: the big story from the NFL. this last few months,
- 47:37Speaker 2: is this Chiefs dynasty at a crossroads? Of course, you
- 47:40Speaker 2: got Patrick Mahomes trying to make a bounce back now,
- 47:43Speaker 2: age 31, busted knees. Travis Kelsey, who's at 37 and
- 47:47Speaker 2: said he had the summer of his life, becoming now
- 47:51Speaker 2: Taylor Swift's other half as well. You have Andy Reid,
- 47:54Speaker 2: the NFL's oldest coach. How are the Chiefs approaching week one,
- 47:58Speaker 2: just based on how last season ended?
- 48:02Speaker 12: And one of their other stars, Chris Jones is up
- 48:04Speaker 12: there now double figures in years in the NFL, right?
- 48:07Speaker 12: I mean, those are your, those are your three main,
- 48:09Speaker 12: three main players and obviously Andy Reed at the top.
- 48:11Speaker 12: So that's your core group. So if there are questions
- 48:14Speaker 12: around the league, it's understandable. It's that can Patrick Mahomes
- 48:17Speaker 12: bounce back from the injury is Travis Kelsey going.
- 48:19Speaker 6: To look old.
- 48:20Speaker 12: And, uh, as Chris Jones, uh, on his, uh, if
- 48:24Speaker 12: not last year, last couple of years and being a,
- 48:27Speaker 12: maybe a fading pass rusher. So, I mean, those are
- 48:29Speaker 12: questions that are going to have to be answered by
- 48:31Speaker 12: this team because it's still the core of this team.
- 48:33Speaker 6: Yes, they've drafted. Yes, they've tried to get younger.
- 48:36Speaker 12: Yes, they made, you know, obviously the big free agent acquisition,
- 48:38Speaker 12: which of course we'll be talking about, right, with Walker.
- 48:41Speaker 12: But it starts with that core group. And so if
- 48:45Speaker 12: you have questions, yeah, I get it. Now, I will
- 48:47Speaker 12: say Patrick Mahomes has been phenomenal in the preseason. He's
- 48:52Speaker 12: the perfect combination of, like, he just breathes football. He
- 48:58Speaker 12: gets after rehab like no one we've ever seen, and
- 49:00Speaker 12: he's somehow a fast healer as well. So he is
- 49:03Speaker 12: way ahead of schedule in terms of what everybody thought.
- 49:06Speaker 12: He has taken every single snap of the of the
- 49:10Speaker 12: preseason camp.
- 49:11Speaker 6: He actually was running the scout team this week because.
- 49:14Speaker 12: They weren't going to play him in the game. But
- 49:15Speaker 12: he ran all the snaps for the scout team as well.
- 49:18Speaker 12: He hasn't missed a day of practice. throughout the entire
- 49:21Speaker 12: camp and all signs pointing to him being the starter
- 49:24Speaker 12: on opening day, which is pretty remarkable considering where they
- 49:26Speaker 12: were a season ago. And I think that also helped
- 49:29Speaker 12: the camp itself because when you have a guy coming
- 49:32Speaker 12: off injury like that, that should still be healing and
- 49:35Speaker 12: you have every right to say, okay, he's going to
- 49:36Speaker 12: miss some time in camp or he's going to miss
- 49:38Speaker 12: some days here and there.
- 49:39Speaker 6: He's out there every single day. How do you not
- 49:40Speaker 6: follow that lead?
- 49:41Speaker 12: So, you know, they take their cues from him and
- 49:44Speaker 12: he's been, you know, the first guy to practice field,
- 49:46Speaker 12: last guy to leave type of guy and taking all
- 49:48Speaker 12: these snaps despite, you know, dealing with a bunch of
- 49:50Speaker 12: rehab in the, in the midst of it. So, I
- 49:53Speaker 12: think that has helped give this team a huge bounce
- 49:56Speaker 12: as well here in the preseason.
- 49:57Speaker 2: Yeah, let's just jump into the deep end here with
- 49:59Speaker 2: K-9 and the departure from Seattle that made me say oof,
- 50:03Speaker 2: made a lot of us say oof. But a big pickup, admittedly,
- 50:07Speaker 2: for the Chiefs and their backfield. There's the press shot.
- 50:09Speaker 2: Patrick Mahomes is armed, supposedly. He, of course, won't play tonight.
- 50:13Speaker 2: He's had a couple fights in camp getting into the
- 50:16Speaker 2: news cycle. So ultimately, what's the read on Kenneth Walker
- 50:20Speaker 2: III from the sideline? Yours with him now wearing new colors.
- 50:25Speaker 6: They love him. They love him. They think he's a
- 50:27Speaker 6: dynamic they haven't had.
- 50:29Speaker 12: Last year's running game was not anything close to what
- 50:33Speaker 12: they had hoped. In fact, at times it was, if
- 50:37Speaker 12: it didn't work the first play, they were going They
- 50:40Speaker 12: were not interested in running the football. And so they
- 50:43Speaker 12: didn't have a lot of success in the run game.
- 50:44Speaker 12: Teams knew it. Teams loaded the box. Teams came after
- 50:47Speaker 12: Patrick Mahomes. You knew they were going to basically throw
- 50:49Speaker 12: in every down. And it became super predictable. So they
- 50:53Speaker 12: needed to have something in the offseason. Now, a lot
- 50:57Speaker 12: of us thought it was probably going to be through
- 50:58Speaker 12: the draft. And it seemed like this may be the
- 51:00Speaker 12: year that they were going to try to do something
- 51:02Speaker 12: early in the draft with the running back.
- 51:04Speaker 6: The trade came about. They went for it.
- 51:05Speaker 12: You know, they, they're, they're going, they're, they're, they're shoring
- 51:09Speaker 12: up their needs. And that, I think that's, that's been
- 51:10Speaker 12: a pretty good trait of this team. Like is the
- 51:13Speaker 12: dynasty over? I don't know, but are they still trying to,
- 51:16Speaker 12: to put pieces to fit, you know, ailing spots?
- 51:21Speaker 6: Absolutely.
- 51:21Speaker 12: And that was what they did with Ken Walker made
- 51:23Speaker 12: a huge splash in that regard. And then I thought
- 51:25Speaker 12: it was pretty telling a couple of weeks ago, my
- 51:27Speaker 12: homes was asked about this during one of his press conferences.
- 51:29Speaker 12: And he was asking, you know, what's, what's the, going
- 51:31Speaker 12: to be the difference with this year's offense. And he's
- 51:33Speaker 12: had a big smile on his face. He said, canine, he's,
- 51:35Speaker 12: They didn't have a breakaway back. They didn't have a
- 51:37Speaker 12: guy that could catch out of the backfield. So it'll
- 51:40Speaker 12: be interesting to see the full dynamic of how they
- 51:43Speaker 12: use them. Also, they haven't been a team that's run
- 51:45Speaker 12: the football with the quarterback under center. So we've seen
- 51:48Speaker 12: a little bit more of that as well, which I
- 51:49Speaker 12: think will be effective at kind of just changing the
- 51:51Speaker 12: predictability of this offense. Last year, everybody knew everything that
- 51:54Speaker 12: was coming, seemingly. And they had a very good read
- 51:56Speaker 12: of what was going on. And I think that they
- 51:59Speaker 12: have tweaked enough things. And then I obviously added a
- 52:01Speaker 12: dynamic running back to be able to to do some
- 52:04Speaker 12: different things offensively to make it look a lot more
- 52:07Speaker 12: Chiefs-like than it did maybe a season ago.
- 52:10Speaker 2: Josh, before we let you go, Garrett Nussmeier, he'll be
- 52:13Speaker 2: under center and opposing Jalen Milrow and kind of a
- 52:16Speaker 2: redo here from their battles between Alabama and LSU, but
- 52:20Speaker 2: what's at stake for him this evening?
- 52:23Speaker 6: Well, I mean, he has been really, really good in camp.
- 52:26Speaker 12: Andy Reid does favor a veteran backup, always has for
- 52:28Speaker 12: Patrick Mahomes, and so Justin Fields is here, but I
- 52:31Speaker 12: would say Fields has been less impressive than Nussmeier has
- 52:35Speaker 12: during camp. I mean, uh, coaches, kids played a lot,
- 52:38Speaker 12: really smart. She picked up a lot of this offense.
- 52:41Speaker 12: And so they're going to give him a long run
- 52:43Speaker 12: here tonight. They said it was, it was the plan
- 52:44Speaker 12: all along to have him play, uh, basically the first
- 52:47Speaker 12: half of the, of the last preseason game, they did
- 52:49Speaker 12: have their fourth string quarterback in the concussion protocol. So
- 52:53Speaker 12: Justin Fields will play, uh, some point in the, uh,
- 52:56Speaker 12: the second half, but it's going to be a long,
- 52:57Speaker 12: long game for Nussmeier.
- 52:59Speaker 6: And I don't know what's fully at stake.
- 53:01Speaker 12: I would say from my vantage point, it would be,
- 53:04Speaker 12: can he be a guy that could be the backup?
- 53:07Speaker 12: Maybe not fully this year, but that long-term backup, if
- 53:12Speaker 12: he's not too good, they have to ship off somewhere else, right?
- 53:15Speaker 12: You want to have that reliable guy that can play
- 53:17Speaker 12: behind Patrick Mahomes. My suspicion is he's just playing to
- 53:23Speaker 12: be the third quarterback, and they're going to have to
- 53:26Speaker 12: protect him this year on the roster. So they've carried
- 53:28Speaker 12: a couple of quarterbacks. in recent years this year, they're
- 53:31Speaker 12: probably going to carry three. Cause they're not going to
- 53:32Speaker 12: be able to expose Nussmeyer to being grabbed up by
- 53:35Speaker 12: anybody because yeah, he's had a really, really nice camp
- 53:38Speaker 12: and has played pretty well in the preseason games as well.
- 53:40Speaker 12: So I think he's a guy that's kind of auditioning
- 53:42Speaker 12: to see, I mean, I guess the, the ceiling would
- 53:45Speaker 12: be is, is he really the two and Justin Fields
- 53:48Speaker 12: is only there as the emergency guy or is he
- 53:52Speaker 12: playing for, yeah, just be a nice little backup this
- 53:54Speaker 12: season and we'll see if you can be elevated next year.
- 53:57Speaker 12: So not a lot of, Probably position groups up for battle.
- 54:01Speaker 12: Probably the same thing on Seattle's side, right? This is
- 54:03Speaker 12: just kind of a game to determine your depth, to
- 54:05Speaker 12: determine your sixth wide receiver and your eighth defensive back
- 54:12Speaker 12: and whether those guys can play special teams as well.
- 54:14Speaker 12: So pretty vanilla. And the fact that these two teams
- 54:17Speaker 12: obviously play in the regular season. Chiefs face both the
- 54:20Speaker 12: Seahawks and the Rams, who they play in the regular season.
- 54:22Speaker 12: Andy Reed was asked about it a few weeks ago,
- 54:24Speaker 12: and he kind of laughed.
- 54:24Speaker 6: He goes, well, neither one of.
- 54:25Speaker 12: Those teams will be playing anybody either. So nobody's going
- 54:28Speaker 12: to show anything that would probably be any relevance to
- 54:31Speaker 12: their game coming up in late October.
- 54:33Speaker 6: So I'm guessing.
- 54:34Speaker 12: Both will keep it pretty down the middle today.
- 54:38Speaker 2: As far as depth is concerned, if they're as hungry
- 54:40Speaker 2: as I am for Kansas City barbecue, we've got some
- 54:43Speaker 2: theater going down here for tonight, no matter who is
- 54:45Speaker 2: playing here. Josh, I appreciate your time, appreciate your insight.
- 54:48Speaker 2: You're always welcome back here, and have a great show
- 54:50Speaker 2: for this evening.
- 54:52Speaker 9: All right.
- 54:52Speaker 6: Thanks for having me.
- 54:53Speaker 2: Thank you very much. That's Josh Klingler joining us here
- 54:55Speaker 2: on the Beacon Plumbing Hotline. We're going to whip around
- 54:58Speaker 2: the horn here. Ryan Spielberg of Apple TV is due
- 55:01Speaker 2: to be joining us here in just a bit. Again,
- 55:03Speaker 2: the Seahawks. at the Chiefs for tonight, a 5 p.m.
- 55:07Speaker 4: Kickoff.
- 55:08Speaker 2: To wrap up the preseason, whether you like it or not,
- 55:11Speaker 2: whether they should have preseason or not, I want to
- 55:13Speaker 2: hear from you. 49451. Talkbacks are also open right now.
- 55:17Speaker 2: iHeartRadio app. Find the red mic icon. 30 seconds. Send
- 55:21Speaker 2: us what you got. Real takes, impersonations, I once heard
- 55:25Speaker 2: of me, whatever it takes. get it done, send it
- 55:28Speaker 2: in via the talkbacks. And I'd love to hear from
- 55:30Speaker 2: you about how much does preseason really mean to you?
- 55:33Speaker 2: Should we go to a format just like college football where,
- 55:37Speaker 2: you know, you're basically practicing all the way until week
- 55:40Speaker 2: one where it turns real and then you can finally
- 55:42Speaker 2: have players slide in. But we have not seen Seahawks starters.
- 55:46Speaker 2: We have not seen Jadarian Price as well. He's been
- 55:49Speaker 2: in bubble wrap all the way until week one. And
- 55:51Speaker 2: for a guy that you know, was playing behind the
- 55:54Speaker 2: depth a little bit over at Notre Dame, this is
- 55:56Speaker 2: going to be a brand new world for him. So,
- 55:58Speaker 2: you know, how much do you value the preseason still?
- 56:01Speaker 2: Is it going to go the way, say, to the
- 56:02Speaker 2: Pro Bowl, 4-9-4-5-1? Or send us your talkbacks right now
- 56:06Speaker 2: via the iHeartRadio app. And again, find the red mic
- 56:08Speaker 2: icon and send us what you got in there. 30
- 56:11Speaker 2: seconds or less. Again, Mariners at the Blue Jays for tonight.
- 56:16Speaker 2: 4-15 first pitch. Apple TV will be the place. We're
- 56:20Speaker 2: going to get Ryan Spielberg on here in just a
- 56:23Speaker 2: bit to discuss this. And again, as far as the
- 56:25Speaker 2: Mariners are concerned, the weight of this series, how much
- 56:29Speaker 2: does it really decide the playoff race to you, 49451?
- 56:34Speaker 2: They have gone through the pattern. Once you got into
- 56:37Speaker 2: the meat of this late July, you got through the Dodgers,
- 56:41Speaker 2: you got through the Rangers, you got through the Twins,
- 56:44Speaker 2: you got through the Tigers, you got through a stinker
- 56:47Speaker 2: of the Rays series. You got through quite a few
- 56:50Speaker 2: stinkers here of the Brewers series as well. Must I
- 56:53Speaker 2: remind you what?
- 56:54Speaker 9: 22-0.
- 56:57Speaker 2: Also felt like back when, you know, in the 1880s,
- 57:00Speaker 2: we're making up names as far as who did something
- 57:03Speaker 2: incredible back then. That's how long it's been since the
- 57:07Speaker 2: Mariners or anybody suffered a defeat that bad. It was
- 57:11Speaker 2: of historical proportions. And I kind of made the joke that,
- 57:13Speaker 2: you know, only a few years prior to what happened
- 57:16Speaker 2: from that last bit of history, that was Marty McFly
- 57:19Speaker 2: and Back to the Future Part Three territory. That's how
- 57:21Speaker 2: bad it was.
- 57:23Speaker 3: Oh, man, that was a nice pull, Benton. That was
- 57:25Speaker 3: a nice pull.
- 57:27Speaker 2: I guess whatever we can get here to try to
- 57:29Speaker 2: make some humor out of this. But remarkably, despite how
- 57:34Speaker 2: bad the Mariners have been, if you look at the
- 57:37Speaker 2: record perspective... This is a game of survival in the
- 57:41Speaker 2: American League.
- 57:42Speaker 3: Yes, it is.
- 57:43Speaker 2: That's what's going to be the important thing, because no
- 57:45Speaker 2: matter how bad they've been at times, no matter how
- 57:48Speaker 2: bleak it's looked at times, there's no Brendan Donovan. Cal
- 57:53Speaker 2: Raleigh at one point was the worst hitter in baseball
- 57:56Speaker 2: before he began to heat up against the Phillies. Julio's
- 57:59Speaker 2: blunders in center field. You know, we're talking about Bryce
- 58:03Speaker 2: Miller and a bad arm. Brian Wu can't pitch on
- 58:06Speaker 2: the road. I mean, this record under a traditional scope
- 58:09Speaker 2: was enough to bury the Mariners by now.
- 58:13Speaker 3: But the AL West, man.
- 58:15Speaker 2: This will be a different outcome in the American League
- 58:18Speaker 2: West and in totality in the American League. So you
- 58:22Speaker 2: don't make excuses here for a team that's underperforming. But
- 58:27Speaker 2: it's just the nature of what this American League is.
- 58:30Speaker 2: It is a game of survival. And once you get
- 58:33Speaker 2: past the Blue Jays, once you get past the Red Sox,
- 58:36Speaker 2: it begins to clear up wide open. And yes, I know,
- 58:40Speaker 2: you've got the Mariners in the same boat as, say,
- 58:43Speaker 2: the Astros, as the Rangers. We'll see what a wild
- 58:46Speaker 2: card brings here. And I use that term loosely to
- 58:50Speaker 2: describe what it's like pitching in Coors Field as well.
- 58:53Speaker 2: Teams can level up at different times and they find
- 58:55Speaker 2: a way here to do this. But it's a lot
- 58:58Speaker 2: better than I would admit in what the Rangers might
- 59:01Speaker 2: have on their schedule and what the Astros also might
- 59:05Speaker 2: have on their schedule. They still have plenty of landmines
- 59:09Speaker 2: here to get. through, pardon the expression. Houston, a first-place team,
- 59:13Speaker 2: has got three at the Mets. They're terrible. Then they
- 59:16Speaker 2: have three at home against the White Sox. Texas, it
- 59:19Speaker 2: was a game back as well of the Astros. They've
- 59:22Speaker 2: got three at Milwaukee, and I would argue the only
- 59:25Speaker 2: solace they have in a series like that is there's
- 59:27Speaker 2: no Jacob Mizorowski. The Brewers already blew through him in
- 59:31Speaker 2: this last series, so they won't see him. But you
- 59:34Speaker 2: have three at home against the A's, where Texas against
- 59:37Speaker 2: the A's this season, that is not a layup. The
- 59:41Speaker 2: Rangers against the Athletics this season, four and six.
- 59:44Speaker 3: Yeah, I know.
- 59:45Speaker 2: Once you get past the Red Sox, the Mariners have
- 59:47Speaker 2: a schedule against everybody that they've had a winning record
- 59:49Speaker 2: against for this last month.
- 59:51Speaker 3: It looks good on paper, Benton.
- 59:53Speaker 2: So you've got to get through.
- 59:55Speaker 3: Yes, you just have to get through these two series, right?
- 59:58Speaker 3: And hopefully... They're getting.
- 1:00:00Speaker 5: Hot at the right time. Pitching gets it together. And
- 1:00:03Speaker 5: they don't get more injured. And Julio and Cal keep
- 1:00:07Speaker 5: on doing what they have been doing.
- 1:00:09Speaker 3: And September holds what we want it.
- 1:00:15Speaker 4: To.
- 1:00:15Speaker 2: With Cal Rawley, something that the broadcast pointed out about
- 1:00:21Speaker 2: a few days ago I thought that was really good
- 1:00:23Speaker 2: in that there was some different positioning with his hands.
- 1:00:27Speaker 2: So there's also a technical part of this with Cal
- 1:00:31Speaker 2: Raleigh and what's also made a big difference. What else
- 1:00:33Speaker 2: is going on, really? I don't know. Some players can
- 1:00:35Speaker 2: get through stuff that we don't know about that has
- 1:00:38Speaker 2: kind of turned their emotions around, their focus around. All
- 1:00:41Speaker 2: of a sudden, they feel like a brand new player.
- 1:00:43Speaker 2: What it is with Cal Raleigh, we don't know. But
- 1:00:45Speaker 2: it's pretty apparent he's swinging the bat a lot more confidently,
- 1:00:49Speaker 2: especially given the Philly series here at this point.
- 1:00:51Speaker 4: So.
- 1:00:52Speaker 2: You get through this Blue Jays series and this Red
- 1:00:54Speaker 2: Sox series. Is 500 enough for the Mariners to stay
- 1:00:59Speaker 2: within three games? That, I think, is a magic number
- 1:01:03Speaker 2: in this. 500 in totality against the Blue Jays and
- 1:01:09Speaker 2: the Red Sox. Is that enough for you to say
- 1:01:12Speaker 2: they're in the thick of this for the long haul?
- 1:01:14Speaker 2: 49451 or give us your talkbacks. I still also want
- 1:01:19Speaker 2: to find out from you, did the Mariners blow it
- 1:01:21Speaker 2: here with Eugenio Suarez and not bringing him back? And
- 1:01:24Speaker 2: just to kind of refresh this once again, it's obvious
- 1:01:27Speaker 2: why you want to bring him back. There's obviously the
- 1:01:29Speaker 2: emotional component of this. But again, are the numbers worth it?
- 1:01:34Speaker 2: We're going to get to Ryan Spielberg right now, joining
- 1:01:37Speaker 2: us in the Beacon Plumbing Hotline. Of course, he's got
- 1:01:39Speaker 2: the Apple TV coverage side of things. And Ryan, great
- 1:01:41Speaker 2: talking to you once again. Hi to my man, Alex Faust,
- 1:01:45Speaker 2: as well, back at the broadcast booth here for tonight.
- 1:01:47Speaker 2: But it's great to have you. And I want to
- 1:01:49Speaker 2: kind of just jump into this here. I asked someone
- 1:01:53Speaker 2: else here on these airwaves about the Mariners and amidst
- 1:01:57Speaker 2: this puzzling American League picture, if you can use one
- 1:01:59Speaker 2: word to describe the Mariners and why, what's that word
- 1:02:02Speaker 2: that you're going to use for the season?
- 1:02:05Speaker 9: Inconsistent.
- 1:02:07Speaker 13: So, I mean, there's been times where you see the
- 1:02:09Speaker 13: signs of a good team and then they fall apart.
- 1:02:14Speaker 13: The thing that's just crazy is So if you go
- 1:02:16Speaker 13: back to last year's American League Championship Series, which I
- 1:02:19Speaker 13: was there for, covered the whole thing through the World Series.
- 1:02:22Speaker 13: So I watched Springer kick Seattle right in the gut.
- 1:02:26Speaker 2: That was awful to see it.
- 1:02:29Speaker 13: That was a series where it all ended, both sides,
- 1:02:33Speaker 13: both teams. I've never seen it before. I was right
- 1:02:35Speaker 13: on the field as a celebration was happening because we
- 1:02:38Speaker 13: were getting interviews from the players from the Blue Jays.
- 1:02:42Speaker 13: There was tears everywhere, like Seattle Mariners covered in tears,
- 1:02:46Speaker 13: Toronto Blue Jays covered in tears. It was such a
- 1:02:50Speaker 13: hard-fought series. And then you come to this year, and
- 1:02:54Speaker 13: both teams are not playing over.
- 1:02:57Speaker 5: 500.
- 1:02:57Speaker 13: Both teams could make it to the postseason. I could
- 1:03:00Speaker 13: see Seattle winning the division, and I could see Toronto
- 1:03:03Speaker 13: getting a wild-card spot.
- 1:03:05Speaker 9: But.
- 1:03:06Speaker 13: This could possibly be the first time since 2008 where
- 1:03:11Speaker 13: the two teams that were in a championship series did
- 1:03:14Speaker 13: not make it to the postseason the next year. And
- 1:03:16Speaker 13: the reason why I bring that up, it was my
- 1:03:18Speaker 13: 2007 Rockies and it was a 2007 Diamondbacks. So I
- 1:03:23Speaker 13: know what it feels like to go what Seattle's going through.
- 1:03:26Speaker 13: I know what it feels like to go with what
- 1:03:28Speaker 13: Toronto's going through. Sometimes there's just no explanation. Like as
- 1:03:33Speaker 13: much as you want to say the guys don't care
- 1:03:37Speaker 13: or it's, you know, Hey, they're worried about contracts or the.
- 1:03:40Speaker 2: Vibe is different.
- 1:03:41Speaker 13: Like the vibe is always going to be different every year.
- 1:03:44Speaker 13: So that that's, that's going to be a fact no
- 1:03:47Speaker 13: matter what, but it is nothing that somebody can like
- 1:03:53Speaker 13: take one variable and say, this is the reason why
- 1:03:56Speaker 13: we are doing this. It's just, it's maddening. And the
- 1:04:00Speaker 13: next year with our Rockies team, we made it to
- 1:04:02Speaker 13: the post season. So yeah, I know what it feels like.
- 1:04:05Speaker 4: It's maddening.
- 1:04:06Speaker 13: It's not from lack of effort. It's not from lack
- 1:04:08Speaker 13: of energy. It's not from lack of commitment from players
- 1:04:11Speaker 13: or from the front office.
- 1:04:13Speaker 2: It's just what it is.
- 1:04:14Speaker 13: And it doesn't happen too often, but it does happen.
- 1:04:17Speaker 2: Given the fact the Rangers are one game back of
- 1:04:19Speaker 2: the Astros, the Mariners are three games back of the Astros.
- 1:04:24Speaker 2: The Mariners, to win the American League West, favorite or underdog?
- 1:04:28Speaker 2: What do you got?
- 1:04:30Speaker 6: Favorite.
- 1:04:31Speaker 13: Too good of a roster for them personally. You know,
- 1:04:34Speaker 13: like you just got they got to play 30 good
- 1:04:36Speaker 13: baseball games and they're there. I don't think they can
- 1:04:39Speaker 13: get into the wildcard spot. So for me, it's like
- 1:04:42Speaker 13: their path is through winning the division. And luckily for them,
- 1:04:45Speaker 13: the division is wide open.
- 1:04:48Speaker 6: They just they got to play the brand of baseball.
- 1:04:50Speaker 13: I mean, the fact that they're dead last in runs scored,
- 1:04:53Speaker 13: they're dead last in batting average, dead last in OPS.
- 1:04:58Speaker 13: It's I mean, these are like stark numbers.
- 1:05:02Speaker 9: But.
- 1:05:02Speaker 13: I mean, things turn around in a hurry. Like, if
- 1:05:05Speaker 13: you've seen baseball enough year after year, you know, all
- 1:05:08Speaker 13: it takes is 30 good games. 30 good, like, just
- 1:05:13Speaker 13: quality games gets you to the dance, and they're good.
- 1:05:16Speaker 2: What about the Blue Jays? How are they viewing this series?
- 1:05:18Speaker 2: And aside from the injuries, what's the biggest difference in
- 1:05:21Speaker 2: the Blue Jays this year versus last year?
- 1:05:23Speaker 13: Well, I mean, Vlad Guerrero hasn't hit a homer at
- 1:05:29Speaker 13: home all year. I mean, and if you're Looking at,
- 1:05:33Speaker 13: you know, again, I'm not pointing the finger at Vlad Guerrero.
- 1:05:36Speaker 13: Guerrero was without Alejandro Kirk for multiple months. Addison Barger,
- 1:05:40Speaker 13: who is, you know, a guy that they believed in,
- 1:05:43Speaker 13: that he has a chance to be an all-star. He's
- 1:05:45Speaker 13: out for the year. Last year, George Springer was the
- 1:05:48Speaker 13: American League Comeback Player of the Year. Hit 32 home runs.
- 1:05:52Speaker 13: Those homers are missing. So it's not just Guerrero, but
- 1:05:56Speaker 13: their overall home run production is way down. They only
- 1:05:58Speaker 13: have two guys with over 10 homers, which is just wild. Um, and,
- 1:06:03Speaker 13: and Guerrero's on pace for eight. He's on base for eight.
- 1:06:08Speaker 9: So, yeah.
- 1:06:10Speaker 13: So, I mean, it's the same thing you guys are
- 1:06:11Speaker 13: seeing with Cal Raleigh. Cal Raleigh is going to have
- 1:06:13Speaker 13: the biggest drop in OPS and major league history. Uh,
- 1:06:17Speaker 13: he's going to go down from a batting average standpoint
- 1:06:19Speaker 13: as one of the worst seasons in the history of baseball.
- 1:06:23Speaker 13: So this is a guy that hit 60 homers last year.
- 1:06:25Speaker 13: And I believe should have been the MVP last year
- 1:06:28Speaker 13: to having, you know, one of the worst years ever.
- 1:06:32Speaker 13: ever by a player. And if you can make sense
- 1:06:35Speaker 13: of it, I'd love to hear it because I'm going
- 1:06:38Speaker 13: to talk about it again tonight.
- 1:06:39Speaker 2: No shortage of storylines. It's going to be a riveting
- 1:06:42Speaker 2: series here for two teams to do very much. They
- 1:06:44Speaker 2: feel in the fight for this. But Ryan, hey, appreciate
- 1:06:47Speaker 2: your time. We're going to get you back on down
- 1:06:49Speaker 2: the road. In the meantime, have a great call for
- 1:06:51Speaker 2: this evening. Appreciate you again.
- 1:06:53Speaker 6: Appreciate it.
- 1:06:53Speaker 9: Thanks for having me on.
- 1:06:54Speaker 4: All right, thanks.
- 1:06:54Speaker 2: That's Ryan Spilborgs on the Beacon Plumbing Hotline joining us
- 1:06:57Speaker 2: here from Apple TV. Talkbacks, text, what you got? Send
- 1:07:01Speaker 2: it in right now. Talkbacks, iHeartRadio app. Also, Tacoma-Dash text
- 1:07:05Speaker 2: line 49451. Your reaction after this on 93.3 KJRFM. You know,
- 1:07:24Speaker 2: I'll be honest, with the Pro Bowl coming and going, Jess,
- 1:07:28Speaker 2: it's one of those things where I say just a
- 1:07:31Speaker 2: faint parting of such sweet sorrow. I, though, can't remember
- 1:07:36Speaker 2: the last time I have watched a real Pro Bowl game.
- 1:07:38Speaker 9: No.
- 1:07:39Speaker 5: When it turned to the games, I mean, it was
- 1:07:41Speaker 5: just a filler while you're waiting.
- 1:07:43Speaker 3: For the Super Bowl.
- 1:07:44Speaker 2: I'm just looking back in the corner of my eye
- 1:07:46Speaker 2: in the last couple of years and just how.
- 1:07:49Speaker 2: If I use the word loose... for physicality and defense
- 1:07:54Speaker 2: that's not even doing it remotely close to justice i've
- 1:07:58Speaker 2: seen harder spring games in college football.
- 1:08:01Speaker 5: Oh yeah no it's um i mean it's patty cake
- 1:08:05Speaker 5: but there are a lot of contract incentives that come
- 1:08:07Speaker 5: with that too so if you make the pro bowl
- 1:08:10Speaker 5: yeah You know, for the players, that's all they care about.
- 1:08:12Speaker 5: Let me take my family to Miami or Hawaii or something,
- 1:08:15Speaker 5: you know? Like, it's not a game.
- 1:08:17Speaker 3: It used to be. It used to be kind of
- 1:08:19Speaker 3: a game, but who's going to risk it?
- 1:08:21Speaker 2: The only time I even remember, and again, 49451, with
- 1:08:25Speaker 2: the Pro Bowl going by the wayside, is preseason next.
- 1:08:27Speaker 2: Preseason for the NFL, 49451, Tacoma Dash text line, Mike
- 1:08:31Speaker 2: Jessaman in for Greg Bell. To be honest, like the
- 1:08:34Speaker 2: first time I'd ever heard of the Pro Bowl, and
- 1:08:36Speaker 2: this is maybe, I think, kind of me, you know,
- 1:08:39Speaker 2: Between Gen X and Millennial, talking from this time frame,
- 1:08:43Speaker 2: if any of you play the old Nintendo, Tecmo Super Bowl,
- 1:08:46Speaker 2: which I contend was one of the greatest sports games
- 1:08:49Speaker 2: of all time. It's not Tecmo Bowl where you had
- 1:08:52Speaker 2: Bo Jackson running around over and over and over. Thurman
- 1:08:55Speaker 2: Thomas in that game was unstoppable. But the first time
- 1:08:59Speaker 2: I had ever heard of the Pro Bowl was you
- 1:09:01Speaker 2: had that option in the video game to play the
- 1:09:04Speaker 2: Pro Bowl. And to be honest, it was a lot
- 1:09:06Speaker 2: of fun. I was like, hey, I can play Joe
- 1:09:09Speaker 2: Montana and then have him hand out the third. I
- 1:09:12Speaker 2: can have him hand out to Emmitt Smith. I can
- 1:09:15Speaker 2: throw deep field to Michael Irvin. Like it's it was
- 1:09:19Speaker 2: almost kind of like the Pro Bowl hit its peak
- 1:09:21Speaker 2: around that point, like in the early 90s to mid 90s.
- 1:09:25Speaker 2: And then you begin to see the rapid decline of
- 1:09:27Speaker 2: guys who didn't want to go. And then the actual
- 1:09:32Speaker 2: pace wasn't even close to like a July practice.
- 1:09:36Speaker 9: No, it was.
- 1:09:37Speaker 2: Just about time.
- 1:09:38Speaker 3: I think that's why they went to the games.
- 1:09:40Speaker 5: You know, Russell Wilson's self-proclaimed suggestion was to go to
- 1:09:44Speaker 5: a skills competition type of thing.
- 1:09:47Speaker 3: And doing away with it, I think, is better than
- 1:09:49Speaker 3: having it these days.
- 1:09:51Speaker 2: 4-2-5. Probably the 90s was the last time I watched
- 1:09:54Speaker 2: a Pro Bowl. You and I are one in the same.
- 1:09:57Speaker 2: 206 here just responding to preseason when I had to
- 1:10:04Speaker 2: choose between my Hawk season tickets or Sounders right back
- 1:10:08Speaker 2: after Beastquake just reference the full price for preseason tickets
- 1:10:12Speaker 2: were a part of the reason I gave up my
- 1:10:14Speaker 2: Hawk season tickets after 26 years of holding.
- 1:10:17Speaker 5: Them that is actually a big reason why people are
- 1:10:22Speaker 5: turning away.
- 1:10:22Speaker 2: Don't they force you to also opt in for preseason
- 1:10:24Speaker 2: tickets too they do And if you can't offload those elsewhere,
- 1:10:28Speaker 2: you're basically left holding the bag. So if you go
- 1:10:32Speaker 2: for the vibes, and I can see why. Hey, I'll
- 1:10:33Speaker 2: just use maybe an example. You know, I got two
- 1:10:36Speaker 2: kids who are sports rabid. Two boys, 11 and 8.
- 1:10:39Speaker 2: They would love to go to an NFL game. I've
- 1:10:41Speaker 2: taken my 11-year-old previously. His very first NFL game was
- 1:10:45Speaker 2: the last year of the Pete Carroll era. I want
- 1:10:48Speaker 2: to get him back out to Lumen here at some
- 1:10:50Speaker 2: point this year. But maybe if you've got that situation
- 1:10:53Speaker 2: where you own, say, four tickets, and you're not taking,
- 1:10:56Speaker 2: you know, buddies here from work, corporate, whatever... If you've
- 1:11:00Speaker 2: got kids, it's a great way to bring them and
- 1:11:02Speaker 2: help them get their feet wet, so to speak, into
- 1:11:04Speaker 2: the NFL. But beyond that, if you can't offload them,
- 1:11:08Speaker 2: you're holding the bag.
- 1:11:09Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:11:10Speaker 3: Well, and the price. Make them half-priced.
- 1:11:13Speaker 5: Make it more accessible to families who can't afford an
- 1:11:16Speaker 5: NFL ticket during the regular season.
- 1:11:17Speaker 2: 585, back to the video games reference. I love that
- 1:11:21Speaker 2: the Pro Bowl was there when playing Madden, and Madden
- 1:11:24Speaker 2: got rid of it a few years ago, too. That's
- 1:11:27Speaker 2: the detached I've been from the video game side of things.
- 1:11:30Speaker 2: I had no idea that Madden even got rid of
- 1:11:31Speaker 2: the Pro Bowl. And Madden Pro Bowl had one of
- 1:11:34Speaker 2: the best games that you could play with no injuries, period.
- 1:11:40Speaker 6: Again, 49451.
- 1:11:40Speaker 2: On to the Mariners, 206. Uh, hopefully Julio stops what
- 1:11:46Speaker 2: Julio has been doing. Oh yeah. And that means the
- 1:11:49Speaker 2: lobs over the field and the lapses and everything.
- 1:11:52Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:11:54Speaker 5: I mean, I think I've seen more from him since
- 1:11:56Speaker 5: that happened instead of, he looks a little more focused,
- 1:11:59Speaker 5: especially at the.
- 1:12:00Speaker 2: Plate, uh, from the two Oh six saying the word
- 1:12:04Speaker 2: I would use about the Mariners is champions because they
- 1:12:08Speaker 2: will win it all. That from the 206. I mean, hey, listen,
- 1:12:13Speaker 2: there's a reason why I have some optimism about this
- 1:12:16Speaker 2: baseball team, just to spy how much, you know, the
- 1:12:19Speaker 2: stuff that we've been talking about negatively has been front
- 1:12:23Speaker 2: and center, and justifiably so here for the last several weeks.
- 1:12:27Speaker 2: But again, it just goes back here to... How competition
- 1:12:31Speaker 2: in the American League West is not like competition from
- 1:12:35Speaker 2: last year, from two years ago to three years ago.
- 1:12:38Speaker 2: It's apples to oranges. And the competition has played down.
- 1:12:42Speaker 2: And again, with the expanded format now for MLB postseason,
- 1:12:45Speaker 2: this partially is designed to give teams a chance where
- 1:12:50Speaker 2: they feel that they wouldn't have had that chance, say,
- 1:12:52Speaker 2: about 10, 15, 20 years ago. That's the most important
- 1:12:57Speaker 2: thing about this. 2-0-6 here to describe the Mariners. Inexplicable.
- 1:13:01Speaker 4: 4-2-5.
- 1:13:03Speaker 2: Scores don't matter when you pitch position players. Just highlights.
- 1:13:07Speaker 2: The run differential in baseball, meaningless because it's just a
- 1:13:09Speaker 2: measurement of pitching, deadening up the strength of your top
- 1:13:12Speaker 2: pitchers as well. Some hockey reaction here, by the way,
- 1:13:17Speaker 2: for the Kraken and the NHL from the 2-0-6. If
- 1:13:20Speaker 2: Matty Benirez and Mackie Samaskevich look alike... kind of do, actually.
- 1:13:24Speaker 2: There should be a promo here for what they do.
- 1:13:28Speaker 2: Worldwide destinations. Send them out to Europe together. Maybe that
- 1:13:33Speaker 2: would be a great promo. That from the 206. They
- 1:13:36Speaker 2: do kind of look alike, actually.
- 1:13:38Speaker 5: What would be fun is if they accidentally went to
- 1:13:40Speaker 5: the wrong locker rooms, like each one went to the opposite.
- 1:13:44Speaker 3: If they were still, you know, they played up on
- 1:13:46Speaker 3: that whole story.
- 1:13:46Speaker 2: That's where you have to get Mackie Samuskevich in that
- 1:13:49Speaker 2: story involved. You've got to fully lean into it.
- 1:13:51Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 1:13:52Speaker 2: In hockey, I will say this. This is kind of
- 1:13:55Speaker 2: how guys bond as teammates. If you see something funny,
- 1:13:59Speaker 2: a guy does something hilarious or stupid. I mean, I
- 1:14:03Speaker 2: one time saw a player. I won't bring his name
- 1:14:05Speaker 2: up to throw him under the bus here. He's coaching
- 1:14:07Speaker 2: elsewhere in pro hockey now. But his indoctrination into pro hockey,
- 1:14:13Speaker 2: he came out from the dressing room. I said hi
- 1:14:16Speaker 2: to him, walked down the tunnel to go onto the
- 1:14:18Speaker 2: ice for a morning skate, and I heard this roar
- 1:14:20Speaker 2: of laughter from, like, 20 guys on the ice. He
- 1:14:24Speaker 2: forgot to take his skate guards off. So that first
- 1:14:28Speaker 2: step on the ice curse splats. That's the type of
- 1:14:32Speaker 2: stuff where guys just don't chirp you or trash talk
- 1:14:36Speaker 2: you playfully from now on. You get nicknames off that stuff.
- 1:14:39Speaker 2: You get nicknames off of that.
- 1:14:41Speaker 5: Oh, hey, just before we go, a couple of season
- 1:14:45Speaker 5: ticket holders have written in.
- 1:14:46Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:14:47Speaker 5: And the 206, 41-year season ticket holder, and they no
- 1:14:50Speaker 5: longer charge full price for preseason.
- 1:14:52Speaker 2: Every game is priced.
- 1:14:53Speaker 3: According to opponent and meeting.
- 1:14:55Speaker 5: And someone else also said from the 425, I'm hearing
- 1:14:58Speaker 5: your story about preseason tickets. They're actually a little less
- 1:15:01Speaker 5: than half the price of a regular game, but you
- 1:15:03Speaker 5: have to look at the breakdown of it.
- 1:15:05Speaker 3: So if you mathed it out.
- 1:15:06Speaker 2: Okay, that's good. Duly noted.
- 1:15:08Speaker 3: That is noted, and that makes me happy.
- 1:15:10Speaker 2: It's helpful, at least here, as far as if you
- 1:15:13Speaker 2: jump in for season tickets. Anyway, Ian Furness, right around
- 1:15:16Speaker 2: the corner of the mayor of Maple Valley. We've got
- 1:15:18Speaker 2: something in common, and if you're watching on YouTube, you
- 1:15:20Speaker 2: might know what it is. Ian's next. All right, well,
- 1:15:35Speaker 2: if you're watching on YouTube, I did say that we
- 1:15:37Speaker 2: have something in common. Myself, the mayor of Maple Valley,
- 1:15:40Speaker 2: as well as Mike Jessaman, and for Greg Bell, Ian
- 1:15:42Speaker 2: Furness is here. Nice hat. Did we kind of match
- 1:15:46Speaker 2: up here to the memo? I like the hat. Kraken
- 1:15:47Speaker 2: hoodie and the mayor of Maple Valley hat as well.
- 1:15:50Speaker 2: Good-looking hat. You take care of your people on the
- 1:15:52Speaker 2: golf course, man. That's why I partially love playing in
- 1:15:55Speaker 2: that tournament.
- 1:15:55Speaker 9: That's right.
- 1:15:55Speaker 2: You got the hat from the golf course.
- 1:15:57Speaker 8: Well, that means you actually spent money on a mulligan package,
- 1:16:00Speaker 8: which I appreciate that. There's all but one group spent
- 1:16:02Speaker 8: money on the mulligan package this year.
- 1:16:04Speaker 9: Ooh.
- 1:16:04Speaker 2: Do we out them?
- 1:16:05Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 1:16:05Speaker 2: No, I'm not going to out them. They're not playing
- 1:16:07Speaker 2: next year. I know who they are. We're not going
- 1:16:10Speaker 2: to sign up. Pretty simple. I never win anything, I
- 1:16:13Speaker 2: feel like, in my whole life. And that was at
- 1:16:15Speaker 2: one time. You won something this year. Oh, yes, I did.
- 1:16:17Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 1:16:17Speaker 2: That collection of beverages, it's Ashley's deal that she has
- 1:16:21Speaker 2: it through. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. And it was
- 1:16:25Speaker 2: a six-pack of beverages. They're all pre-mixed. One was an old-fashioned.
- 1:16:30Speaker 6: Okay.
- 1:16:31Speaker 2: The other that's really good, it's coffee and whiskey. It's
- 1:16:35Speaker 2: a cold brew mix. Well, now we've got to say
- 1:16:36Speaker 2: who that is. And the other is a Gold Rush.
- 1:16:38Speaker 2: Is Jody out there? What company is that? What is that? Oh, man.
- 1:16:42Speaker 4: You should know.
- 1:16:43Speaker 2: They advertise on the damn station. I want to thank them.
- 1:16:45Speaker 2: They don't sponsor me here. Is it out there?
- 1:16:47Speaker 4: No.
- 1:16:47Speaker 3: It's Yellowstone.
- 1:16:48Speaker 4: Yes, Yellowstone.
- 1:16:49Speaker 3: Thank you.
- 1:16:50Speaker 2: Yes, thank you. Yellowstone Cocktails. Thank you. Yeah, name escapes
- 1:16:53Speaker 2: me here.
- 1:16:53Speaker 4: It did.
- 1:16:55Speaker 2: I believe a whole six-pack of that from the box
- 1:16:58Speaker 2: was north of 150. Oh, good. There you go. Yeah,
- 1:17:02Speaker 2: it's been in the fridge in the downstairs garage for
- 1:17:04Speaker 2: quite a while.
- 1:17:05Speaker 8: I'm kind of milking it a little bit. I give
- 1:17:07Speaker 8: you credit for that. It would have been gone in
- 1:17:09Speaker 8: the Furness house by now, so that's good.
- 1:17:11Speaker 2: Good for you. Well, the Maple Valley did not last
- 1:17:14Speaker 2: that long.
- 1:17:14Speaker 4: Okay, good.
- 1:17:15Speaker 8: It's down about less than half a growler now. Well,
- 1:17:17Speaker 8: it ain't going to be good anymore if you opened
- 1:17:19Speaker 8: it last week.
- 1:17:20Speaker 2: I killed a growler probably at one point in a
- 1:17:23Speaker 2: matter of days when I got it last year.
- 1:17:25Speaker 4: All right.
- 1:17:25Speaker 2: Well, once you open a growler, you've got to drink
- 1:17:27Speaker 2: it within a day. I'm trying to space myself a
- 1:17:29Speaker 2: little bit. Dude, it's going to be flat. What are
- 1:17:30Speaker 2: you doing? It's still good, though. No, it's flat beer.
- 1:17:33Speaker 4: Help.
- 1:17:34Speaker 5: Help.
- 1:17:34Speaker 7: You have to finish it within at least at the
- 1:17:38Speaker 7: very very like longest 48 hours.
- 1:17:41Speaker 2: All i think now is that you're just trying to
- 1:17:42Speaker 2: get me to down the whole thing tonight and have
- 1:17:44Speaker 2: no no bishop this is growler 101 fella you open
- 1:17:47Speaker 2: a growler you gotta drink it in 24 hours now
- 1:17:49Speaker 2: on the.
- 1:17:53Speaker 8: Beers i've kind of moved on more to now you've
- 1:17:55Speaker 8: got to get your ass back down there and buy
- 1:17:57Speaker 8: another growler today i moved on to mixed drinks now
- 1:18:00Speaker 8: and i gotta get back into the beer side wow
- 1:18:02Speaker 8: i guess i guess i guess the beers are almost
- 1:18:03Speaker 8: sold out high class yeah that's they're almost sold out
- 1:18:06Speaker 8: you and you're incredible i i i appreciate the thought
- 1:18:10Speaker 8: of trying to milk it but once you open a
- 1:18:12Speaker 8: growler man it don't say.
- 1:18:14Speaker 2: I literally did not know this isn't a gallon of
- 1:18:16Speaker 2: milk buddy I literally just learned this. I learned something
- 1:18:20Speaker 2: new today. Oh, my goodness me. It's moving, though, man.
- 1:18:22Speaker 6: It's moving.
- 1:18:23Speaker 2: It's moving. This is why we call you the captain.
- 1:18:26Speaker 9: I get it.
- 1:18:28Speaker 2: I'm here for the content, right?
- 1:18:29Speaker 8: You are here for the content. Brandon Montour liked that.
- 1:18:32Speaker 8: He liked your nickname.
- 1:18:33Speaker 2: He actually had a great idea for us yesterday after
- 1:18:35Speaker 2: you were done talking to him. I was talking with
- 1:18:37Speaker 2: Everett Allen. We're podcasting, so we can kind of take
- 1:18:40Speaker 2: more stops and starts and all that. Right. We put
- 1:18:42Speaker 2: Al between the benches once or twice. There's other ideas
- 1:18:47Speaker 2: floating around of what we can do creatively.
- 1:18:49Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:18:49Speaker 2: He actually endorsed the idea of putting me between the
- 1:18:51Speaker 2: benches for one game, my stuff down there, kind of
- 1:18:54Speaker 2: like what you see maybe before at that, uh, Coors
- 1:18:57Speaker 2: Light seats just behind the corner, but put me between
- 1:19:00Speaker 2: the benches in the ugliest 80s Gretzky era Jofa helmet.
- 1:19:04Speaker 2: I like that idea. I like that idea. It might
- 1:19:06Speaker 2: look like me with Slapshot from The Organist.
- 1:19:08Speaker 8: Would you then abandon the Coors Light Section 20 intermission place.
- 1:19:13Speaker 2: Then and just do everything down there? Oh, that's a
- 1:19:15Speaker 2: good question.
- 1:19:15Speaker 4: If we have to bring me on.
- 1:19:16Speaker 8: Find a way to kind of like make it around
- 1:19:17Speaker 8: some Coors Light branding. Anders might have to fill in
- 1:19:20Speaker 8: for you those intermissions. Yeah.
- 1:19:23Speaker 2: You can't get there from there. Well, no, but I
- 1:19:25Speaker 2: did the whole show from those Coors Light seats like
- 1:19:27Speaker 2: right in the corner. Did you do that last year
- 1:19:28Speaker 2: too or just two years ago? Two years ago and
- 1:19:31Speaker 2: at one point last year, I believe we did as well.
- 1:19:33Speaker 2: All right. Memory could escape me. I'm kind of getting
- 1:19:35Speaker 2: older here, so.
- 1:19:36Speaker 9: Well.
- 1:19:36Speaker 2: Aren't we all? Aren't we all?
- 1:19:41Speaker 4: Oh, man.
- 1:19:41Speaker 2: I miss hockey season, but I was trying to come
- 1:19:45Speaker 2: on by and say hi to you.
- 1:19:46Speaker 8: I brought the kids yesterday, and you were a way too.
- 1:19:49Speaker 8: You were dialed in from the get-go. Well, I was
- 1:19:50Speaker 8: doing a radio show, Mike. Yeah. Kind of important.
- 1:19:54Speaker 6: I was doing... Well.
- 1:19:56Speaker 2: I won't get carried away with that. I'm just telling you.
- 1:19:58Speaker 2: I said, just give Ian a high five and we'll
- 1:20:00Speaker 2: catch him later. Give Ian a high five. Yeah, no,
- 1:20:02Speaker 2: it was fun. It was a good day yesterday. I'm
- 1:20:04Speaker 2: glad we got to make the announcement.
- 1:20:05Speaker 8: Really cool that this radio station, radio group, and the
- 1:20:09Speaker 8: Kraken specifically are committed to doing radio the right way.
- 1:20:14Speaker 8: I mean, we said it yesterday. I think there's a
- 1:20:18Speaker 8: few sports... I think hockey and baseball, top of the list.
- 1:20:21Speaker 8: If you do radio right, those are great sports on
- 1:20:24Speaker 8: the radio.
- 1:20:25Speaker 2: They really are.
- 1:20:26Speaker 8: And I'm glad that we're so committed to doing it.
- 1:20:28Speaker 8: You and Al and Fitz do a great job, too.
- 1:20:31Speaker 8: I'd be hard-pressed to think there's a better group in
- 1:20:33Speaker 8: the NHL than.
- 1:20:34Speaker 4: What you guys do.
- 1:20:35Speaker 2: I wouldn't be here without you, man, and others. And
- 1:20:38Speaker 2: this makes the world go around because you're also chipping in.
- 1:20:40Speaker 2: Anders Hirsch is also chipping in as well, too. And
- 1:20:43Speaker 2: we have the play live play shuffle. Sometimes you get
- 1:20:45Speaker 2: the home games. I jump in here for the road
- 1:20:46Speaker 2: and Andrews is absolutely crushing it here in the host chair,
- 1:20:49Speaker 2: but he's, he's been great. You've been great. We'll get
- 1:20:51Speaker 2: you back on for a, More podcasting fun, but we've
- 1:20:54Speaker 2: got more funsies here. I've got to go through your
- 1:20:56Speaker 2: agent now, I guess. Yeah, talk to Jess. I'll call
- 1:20:59Speaker 2: you agent boy from now on.
- 1:21:01Speaker 3: I take 10%.
- 1:21:02Speaker 2: Okay, we'll talk about this later. Talk to Jess. What
- 1:21:04Speaker 2: a world we live in now. Put an invoice together
- 1:21:05Speaker 2: for Captain Lear. What you got here, Ian, today? We're
- 1:21:08Speaker 2: all over the place today. We'll do a little baseball
- 1:21:10Speaker 2: in the first hour.
- 1:21:11Speaker 8: Mariners have a huge series in Toronto starting tonight, and
- 1:21:14Speaker 8: we'll get into that a little bit coming up in.
- 1:21:16Speaker 2: The noon hour. Cease and desist.
- 1:21:18Speaker 8: Yeah, Chris Crawford's going to join us at 1220, so
- 1:21:19Speaker 8: we'll go kind of around the horn with Chris and
- 1:21:21Speaker 8: Anders and I. Anders played the role of Chris Crawford
- 1:21:23Speaker 8: on Monday.
- 1:21:24Speaker 2: We'll try not to talk about Game 7.
- 1:21:26Speaker 8: We're not going to do that. We'll let Apple do
- 1:21:28Speaker 8: all that nonsense. Well, Danny O'Neill joins us in the
- 1:21:31Speaker 8: 1 o'clock hour. Greg Bell at 1 o'clock, by the way.
- 1:21:33Speaker 8: He just landed. The guy that you filled in for today,
- 1:21:35Speaker 8: he just landed in Kansas City. We'll get his thoughts
- 1:21:37Speaker 8: on what's going on there tonight with the preseason game
- 1:21:38Speaker 8: at 1, Danny O'Neill at 1.20, and then it is
- 1:21:41Speaker 8: Week 0. College football season begins. And that means our
- 1:21:45Speaker 8: guy Rob Rang, the Ranger, is going to join us
- 1:21:46Speaker 8: at 2 o'clock to preview the games this weekend. We've
- 1:21:48Speaker 8: got a couple of interesting, intriguing, and fun matchups in
- 1:21:51Speaker 8: college football starting tomorrow in this week's hero.
- 1:21:53Speaker 2: So we've got a lot. We've got college football, NFL football,
- 1:21:55Speaker 2: and Mariners all coming up. And because it's the most
- 1:21:56Speaker 2: wonderful time of the year, college football in play, baseball's
- 1:21:59Speaker 2: heating up, and hockey not too far away. That's Ian
- 1:22:02Speaker 2: coming up here in just a bit. Big thanks again,
- 1:22:04Speaker 2: Roxy Bernstein, Josh Klingler, Ryan Spielberg, also Mackie Samuskevich. Mike,
- 1:22:11Speaker 2: Ian for Greg Bell. Thanks for joining us. I'm Mike.
- 1:22:13Speaker 2: See ya.
