DairyTalk 216: Golden Cross vs. Knockout - Why Successful Holstein Breeding Is More Than Chasing Top Bulls - by Helmut Demmelhuber
This DairyTalk episode explores two core strategies in modern Holstein breeding: the Golden Cross and the Knockout mating approach. While the Golden Cross focuses on combining proven bloodlines to create balanced and long-lasting cows, the Knockout principle serves as a safety mechanism to eliminate risky genetic combinations. Rather than chasing short-term records, the emphasis lies on health, functionality, and long-term profitability. Modern dairy breeding succeeds when creative pattern recognition is paired with disciplined genetic selection.
