Transcript
- 0:01Speaker 1: Let's dive into this week's matchup in the Coordinator's Corner
- 0:04Speaker 1: of the Sean O'Connell Show. OC chats with the coordinators
- 0:08Speaker 1: every week of the Utah football season. On your home
- 0:12Speaker 1: of the Utes and your home for football, ESPN 792.1 FM.
- 0:18Speaker 2: We got the airing of grievances coming up, but right now,
- 0:22Speaker 2: what you've all been waiting for, Coordinator's Corner, and this
- 0:25Speaker 2: week we get to catch up with Colton Swan. defensive
- 0:29Speaker 2: coordinator at the university of Utah. His defense has been
- 0:33Speaker 2: looking pretty darn good. We'll get to the bottom of
- 0:36Speaker 2: how and why it's the Sean O'Connell show here.
- 0:39Speaker 3: Colton Swan. Welcome. How are you?
- 0:41Speaker 4: Good. How are you doing?
- 0:43Speaker 1: All right.
- 0:44Speaker 2: We're going to ask you to go back a couple
- 0:46Speaker 2: of weeks because you know, that's, we haven't had a
- 0:49Speaker 2: chance to talk to you in a couple of weeks.
- 0:52Speaker 2: First of all, how do you feel like practice went
- 0:55Speaker 2: during the bi-week?
- 0:57Speaker 4: Awesome. It's, you know, bi-week is used for two things.
- 1:01Speaker 4: Number one, to get ahead mentally. You know, you get
- 1:04Speaker 4: a jump on, you know, your next opponent. You dive
- 1:07Speaker 4: into the film study. It's also used for recovery. You
- 1:11Speaker 4: got to do a great job with, you know, your nutrition,
- 1:14Speaker 4: your sleep, you know, your rehab, stuff like that. So
- 1:17Speaker 4: trying to get ahead from a body standpoint and also
- 1:20Speaker 4: mental standpoint. So bi-week went well for us.
- 1:24Speaker 2: And, of course, much more importantly, the team handled its
- 1:27Speaker 2: first road game very well. Your defense limited one of
- 1:31Speaker 2: the best players in the conference, in my estimation, in
- 1:33Speaker 2: Aiden Flora to well below his game averages, his season
- 1:37Speaker 2: averages so far. And, you know, handled business, got the
- 1:42Speaker 2: job done, and your team is 4-0 with a chance
- 1:44Speaker 2: to be 5-0 tomorrow night. So go back, if you're willing,
- 1:49Speaker 2: all the way to that Iowa State road trip and
- 1:52Speaker 2: tell me how your team graded out and how you
- 1:54Speaker 2: thought things went.
- 1:56Speaker 4: I thought it was a good challenge for us. It
- 1:58Speaker 4: was kind of like, okay, who are we from an
- 2:01Speaker 4: identity standpoint? We knew what we were going to face.
- 2:04Speaker 4: In Iowa State's power run downhill, and as you mentioned,
- 2:11Speaker 4: the running back, an extremely good player. You saw what
- 2:15Speaker 4: he did this last week at West Virginia. It's like, okay,
- 2:18Speaker 4: that kid is a good runner. It was a chance
- 2:22Speaker 4: for us to really kind of showcase our physicality our
- 2:26Speaker 4: ability to play with good pad level and inside hands
- 2:29Speaker 4: and control the line of scrimmage. We knew that's what
- 2:32Speaker 4: the game was going to be. Afterwards, their coach came
- 2:37Speaker 4: on and said they really made us one-dimensional. They kind
- 2:40Speaker 4: of took away what we do best in the run game.
- 2:44Speaker 4: I was really proud of our guys. They stepped up
- 2:47Speaker 4: to the challenge. They worked hard all week going into
- 2:49Speaker 4: the game. they knew what they had to do and
- 2:52Speaker 4: right from the very first play you could see the
- 2:55Speaker 4: the dominance just at the line of scrimmage with our
- 2:57Speaker 4: guys you know from the front seven to even the
- 3:00Speaker 4: safeties coming up corners getting involved in the run game
- 3:03Speaker 4: i think our guys really did a good job of
- 3:04Speaker 4: buying into what we were asking.
- 3:07Speaker 2: Not only stopping keeping them below their averages but a
- 3:10Speaker 2: lot of disruptive plays a lot of tfls and things
- 3:13Speaker 2: like that in this game and i know that for
- 3:16Speaker 2: a defensive coordinator that probably brings a little tear to
- 3:18Speaker 2: your eyes, seeing your guys win, not only at the
- 3:21Speaker 2: line of scrimmage, but, but in anticipation and matching their
- 3:25Speaker 2: film study to, to know what's coming and getting to
- 3:28Speaker 2: that point of attack so quickly. And you had a
- 3:31Speaker 2: nice distribution, Trey Reynolds, a couple of times in the backfield, Jai,
- 3:34Speaker 2: once again, Elijah Ellis is really starting to shine, I think.
- 3:38Speaker 2: And so just, you know, when you see those guys,
- 3:40Speaker 2: not only make a play, but make a disruptive play,
- 3:42Speaker 2: a negative play for the offense. Just, just tell me,
- 3:46Speaker 2: you know, how it feels for you to know that
- 3:47Speaker 2: the work that all of them put in and that
- 3:49Speaker 2: you put in is paying off.
- 3:52Speaker 4: Yeah, it's, you know, on the defensive side, we call
- 3:54Speaker 4: it production. And with those havoc plays that you're talking
- 3:59Speaker 4: about are impactful type of plays, whether it be sacks, TFLs, PBUs, interceptions,
- 4:05Speaker 4: you know, and what's interesting to see, and we track them,
- 4:08Speaker 4: you know, All the way from fall camp through the
- 4:12Speaker 4: season and to see how our guys are producing in
- 4:15Speaker 4: those havoc plays is really exceptional. It's kind of nice
- 4:19Speaker 4: to see these guys getting their hands on the balls
- 4:22Speaker 4: and creating sacks and getting those TFLs on such crucial
- 4:27Speaker 4: short yardage situations. you know, they understand the down distances.
- 4:32Speaker 4: So I think they really are kind of buying into,
- 4:34Speaker 4: you know, our culture on the defensive side and, and
- 4:37Speaker 4: those havoc plays are showing up. We have a goal
- 4:40Speaker 4: of getting 14 havoc plays, you know, every game, you know,
- 4:44Speaker 4: and in so far in the four games, we've been
- 4:46Speaker 4: up 20, 20 plus type havoc plays with, with those,
- 4:51Speaker 4: those impactful plays for us. So.
- 4:55Speaker 2: You were taught, you talked about it in, in post-practice
- 4:57Speaker 2: media availability this week, but you know, we, we've been
- 5:00Speaker 2: nitpicky and we've been saying like, all right, sack, sack, sacks.
- 5:04Speaker 2: And you have, you know, a couple of times now
- 5:06Speaker 2: mentioned in answering questions about it, that it's not a
- 5:10Speaker 2: be all end all getting sack production, especially from certain
- 5:13Speaker 2: position groups, but with mobile quarterbacks, a lot of what
- 5:17Speaker 2: needs to be emphasized. And we saw this against Iowa
- 5:19Speaker 2: state and, Kansas could present this problem and West Virginia
- 5:23Speaker 2: down the road and BYU down the road and all
- 5:25Speaker 2: this that, you know, you've got to maintain, you know,
- 5:28Speaker 2: gap integrity. You got to keep containment and things like that.
- 5:32Speaker 2: How are your guys grading out on that aspect of
- 5:34Speaker 2: a pass rush and in the passing.
- 5:37Speaker 3: Game right now?
- 5:38Speaker 4: Yeah, I think you kind of hit the nail on
- 5:41Speaker 4: the head. Sacks come. You look at through four games,
- 5:46Speaker 4: we're ahead of last year and the year before as
- 5:49Speaker 4: far as amount of sacks. But we don't really focus
- 5:53Speaker 4: on the amount. I think if we turn our attention to, oh,
- 5:57Speaker 4: we need more sacks, we need more sacks, which if
- 6:00Speaker 4: you look at it statistically, we're actually ahead of where
- 6:03Speaker 4: we were last year through four games. You know, but
- 6:06Speaker 4: the mindset, I truly believe that if you're just sitting
- 6:09Speaker 4: there focusing on sacks and, you know, from a defensive
- 6:12Speaker 4: end standpoint, defensive tackle standpoint, you lose the integrity of
- 6:15Speaker 4: your defense. Uh, and, and that's where you mentioned earlier
- 6:19Speaker 4: in your question is like, okay, you're playing these athletic quarterbacks.
- 6:23Speaker 4: If you are, you know, got one guy that is
- 6:26Speaker 4: undisciplined in his rush lane, you know, you're going to
- 6:28Speaker 4: let an athletic quarterback get out and, you know, scramble,
- 6:31Speaker 4: it's going to hurt you more. So it's, it's gotta
- 6:33Speaker 4: be a collective deal in the fact of, Hey, we've
- 6:36Speaker 4: got to make sure that we're containing these athletic quarterbacks
- 6:39Speaker 4: and keeping guys in the pocket. Yeah. Well, you know,
- 6:42Speaker 4: sometimes it might be a PVU or, you know, an
- 6:45Speaker 4: incomplete pass versus a sack, but you know, we're not
- 6:48Speaker 4: letting the guys scramble on third and eight to get
- 6:50Speaker 4: a pickup, the first down, you know, so there's a
- 6:52Speaker 4: lot that kind of goes into it and the teaching
- 6:54Speaker 4: process for these kids and them really understanding. I think
- 6:57Speaker 4: they do a really good job, but like I said,
- 6:59Speaker 4: the sacks, the sacks are there. you know, is it,
- 7:02Speaker 4: is it coming from a linebacker? Sure. Is it coming
- 7:04Speaker 4: from a defensive tackle? Sure. You know, it's, it's collective in,
- 7:07Speaker 4: in how I like to look out of it. But
- 7:09Speaker 4: at the same time, if we're only thinking sack, then,
- 7:12Speaker 4: you know, you're, you're going to get your butt kicked
- 7:14Speaker 4: in the run game or Q scramble game.
- 7:17Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 7:17Speaker 2: Morgan answered a question about this earlier in the week
- 7:20Speaker 2: about pro football focus grades. And you've got one of
- 7:23Speaker 2: the top defensive backfields in the entire country right now.
- 7:27Speaker 2: One of the top defenses in the entire country right now,
- 7:29Speaker 2: but it's certainly a point of emphasis that, is the
- 7:31Speaker 2: back end and the way that those guys are handling
- 7:34Speaker 2: their duties. And I just wanted to give you a
- 7:36Speaker 2: space to talk about what your safeties, your corners, your
- 7:40Speaker 2: nickels have been able to do this year. When, you know,
- 7:43Speaker 2: really you're asking a lot. Some of these, sometimes these
- 7:46Speaker 2: guys are down in the box. They're tackling extremely well.
- 7:49Speaker 2: We've seen sacks and pressures generated from their blitzes and
- 7:52Speaker 2: things like that. But in past coverage, those havoc plays
- 7:56Speaker 2: are still being, being produced. And, I think that's a
- 7:59Speaker 2: credit to Sharif and to Coach Odom and everybody else,
- 8:02Speaker 2: but I wanted to give you an opportunity to talk
- 8:04Speaker 2: about the way that you think those guys have played
- 8:06Speaker 2: so far.
- 8:08Speaker 4: Yeah, I've been really pleased with how they're playing. Impressed,
- 8:12Speaker 4: probably not the word, because that's my expectation from what
- 8:16Speaker 4: they have done and have shown. They've gained my trust
- 8:21Speaker 4: over time and are doing an exceptional job. and I'm really,
- 8:26Speaker 4: really pleased with where they're at. It's a deep group
- 8:30Speaker 4: back there. You look at the rotation at the corner
- 8:34Speaker 4: spot and sit there and say, okay, one of three
- 8:37Speaker 4: to four guys are playing and playing well and they
- 8:40Speaker 4: can rotate in and they're doing a great job with it.
- 8:43Speaker 4: You look at the safety position and if you threw
- 8:45Speaker 4: Benny into the mix there, you got three to four
- 8:49Speaker 4: guys that can play as well. The depth of it
- 8:51Speaker 4: and Just the cognizant ability to process all the information
- 8:57Speaker 4: that we're throwing at them and been really, really impressed
- 9:01Speaker 4: and pleased. And like you said, they are well-rounded dudes.
- 9:05Speaker 4: I mean, they can come down and play in the
- 9:07Speaker 4: box and make tackles with TFLs and blitz the quarterback
- 9:11Speaker 4: and do a variety of different skill sets and also
- 9:15Speaker 4: cover a fade from the slot from the outside one
- 9:18Speaker 4: or five spot.
- 9:22Speaker 1: Guys.
- 9:23Speaker 4: And, and that was honestly, that was a big question
- 9:25Speaker 4: mark going into this season is okay. We had to replace,
- 9:28Speaker 4: you know, some good players, you know, replace guys that
- 9:32Speaker 4: have moved on. And, and so I've been really impressed
- 9:36Speaker 4: and really pleased, I should say with, with where they're
- 9:39Speaker 4: at and how they're continuing to work.
- 9:41Speaker 2: You mentioned the depth and I want to talk about
- 9:43Speaker 2: depth really on both sides of the ball right now
- 9:45Speaker 2: for this university of Utah football team, we're seeing a
- 9:48Speaker 2: great amount of depth. Yes, you have star players in
- 9:52Speaker 2: both categories, but there's not a significant drop off, at
- 9:56Speaker 2: least from my vantage point, when Elijah Ellis and Cyrus Polo.
- 10:00Speaker 3: Are in there. versus when it's Trey Reynolds and John Hall.
- 10:03Speaker 2: And that I think, you know, we're taking it for
- 10:06Speaker 2: granted already four games into the season, but it's not,
- 10:09Speaker 2: it's not all that normal, especially in the modern year
- 10:11Speaker 2: of college football where transfer portal and NIL opportunities have
- 10:16Speaker 2: actually diminished depth in a lot of places, especially in
- 10:18Speaker 2: places where you don't have unlimited funds. But I'm looking
- 10:22Speaker 2: at this Utah football team and I'm like, man, the
- 10:25Speaker 2: T the two deep feels really good in a lot
- 10:27Speaker 2: of these very crucial positions where How have you and
- 10:30Speaker 2: the rest of your coaches been able to achieve that?
- 10:33Speaker 4: Yeah, just taking those younger kids that you bring in
- 10:36Speaker 4: from high school and developing them. You mentioned Cyrus Polu
- 10:40Speaker 4: and Elijah Ellis. Those are two great examples of what
- 10:43Speaker 4: we've been able to, number one, recruit to, and number two,
- 10:47Speaker 4: develop them. But taking guys like that and getting them
- 10:50Speaker 4: to where you can get them on the field and
- 10:52Speaker 4: they can produce, you trust them to be out there.
- 10:56Speaker 4: And so it's a well-rounded defense, especially when you can
- 11:00Speaker 4: have 22 guys in uh, ability to be on the,
- 11:05Speaker 4: on the field versus, you know, just 12, 13, 14,
- 11:10Speaker 4: 15 guys. And you don't have, you know, the two
- 11:12Speaker 4: deep that you would normally have. And so, um, you know,
- 11:15Speaker 4: a credit to, to everybody included strength staff and all
- 11:18Speaker 4: the coaches and, and These kids are really working to
- 11:22Speaker 4: get on the field, and it definitely shows up. For
- 11:26Speaker 4: these long seasons, once they go 14, 15 weeks, you've
- 11:31Speaker 4: got to have guys that provide that depth and that
- 11:34Speaker 4: are quality players for sure.
- 11:36Speaker 2: Colton Swan, Utah defensive coordinator, is our guest here on
- 11:39Speaker 2: the Sean O'Connell Show for Coordinator's Corner ahead of a
- 11:41Speaker 2: Kansas matchup Saturday night, whiteout at Rice Eccles Stadium, 8-15 kick.
- 11:47Speaker 2: The weather might be a little bit soggy and cold
- 11:50Speaker 2: to match those iced out helmets. We'll get to that
- 11:52Speaker 2: here in just a second. Uh, I've been, we've been
- 11:55Speaker 2: too positive. We've been too hunky Dory to singing everyone's praises.
- 11:59Speaker 2: What is the thing that you need your defense to
- 12:02Speaker 2: do better? What is something that you, you were able
- 12:04Speaker 2: to watch some film in the spy week and look
- 12:06Speaker 2: and evaluate and say, all right, here's some more potential
- 12:09Speaker 2: that we can unlock.
- 12:10Speaker 3: Let's do this in Kansas and beyond.
- 12:14Speaker 4: Yeah, it's always for us going to be coming down
- 12:16Speaker 4: to stopping the run game. I think that that is
- 12:20Speaker 4: something that we are constantly focusing on. We are facing
- 12:25Speaker 4: in Kansas a very run-heavy team with a run-heavy quarterback.
- 12:32Speaker 4: Not only with his ability with QB design run plays,
- 12:35Speaker 4: but also his ability to, on the drop back pass,
- 12:38Speaker 4: to get outside the pocket, extend plays, use his feet
- 12:41Speaker 4: to pick up first downs. And so constantly working on
- 12:46Speaker 4: understanding the down distance, minimizing the damage, you know, really
- 12:50Speaker 4: kind of playing into what the offense has given us.
- 12:53Speaker 4: And so, you know, it's... As you know, OCE is
- 12:58Speaker 4: sometimes it's organized chaos, right? You get aligned, you assign,
- 13:02Speaker 4: you know, the ball snapped, you try to execute. And
- 13:04Speaker 4: then from that point, you know, you're really trying to
- 13:07Speaker 4: rally and tackle and pursue and those types of things.
- 13:10Speaker 4: And you've got to be able to pin your ears
- 13:12Speaker 4: back and get after, you know, your opponent, whether it's
- 13:16Speaker 4: a one-on-one matchup or a schematic deal. But just, I
- 13:20Speaker 4: really am telling those guys, hey, we've got to beat,
- 13:23Speaker 4: you know, Kansas every day in practice, right? When we
- 13:26Speaker 4: have a scout period, we've got to really focus in
- 13:29Speaker 4: and make sure that we're executing and that we're doing
- 13:32Speaker 4: the things necessary, like pursuing the ball and tackling and
- 13:36Speaker 4: those types of things. It's a skill set that a
- 13:39Speaker 4: lot of people forget about. because at some point your
- 13:43Speaker 4: scheme is probably going to break down, but your ability
- 13:47Speaker 4: to pursue the football and tackle should never break down.
- 13:50Speaker 4: Your effort should never break down. And I think that's
- 13:53Speaker 4: what we do well right now, but it's keeping a
- 13:55Speaker 4: team that is 4-0 hungry. and that's always going to
- 13:59Speaker 4: be a challenge. Sometimes the pat on the back is
- 14:02Speaker 4: not too far from the kick in the butt. As coaches,
- 14:06Speaker 4: we've got to be great motivators, and we've got to
- 14:09Speaker 4: really help these guys understand what true leadership looks like
- 14:13Speaker 4: within and how that drives teams to be great, not
- 14:16Speaker 4: just average, but to be great. It's definitely a mind
- 14:20Speaker 4: game and trying to keep keep these kids going because,
- 14:23Speaker 4: you know, the human ability and natural instinct is to,
- 14:28Speaker 4: to relax. And, you know, like I said, I start
- 14:30Speaker 4: patting backs and those types of things. And that's, that's
- 14:33Speaker 4: not the case. That's not who we are.
- 14:36Speaker 2: You just mentioned Kansas is run heavy. They're they're five
- 14:39Speaker 2: and a half yards of carry. They're the number two
- 14:41Speaker 2: total offense. in the conference of the number two rushing
- 14:44Speaker 2: offense in the conference, but they're not translating as well
- 14:48Speaker 2: into scoring offense. And I know your, your job is
- 14:50Speaker 2: not to solve their problem is to create more for them.
- 14:53Speaker 2: But why is what Kansas does in the run game,
- 14:57Speaker 2: not leading to more points?
- 15:01Speaker 4: I think they're putting drives together and they're falling apart
- 15:05Speaker 4: with some mistakes. Being a little bit careless with the
- 15:09Speaker 4: football is a big thing. You can see them go
- 15:13Speaker 4: on length of field and then create a turnover or
- 15:17Speaker 4: something to that regard. Like you said, the offense is
- 15:21Speaker 4: very potent. The quarterback is extremely potent. He has the
- 15:25Speaker 4: ability to do multiple things and he's got a very
- 15:27Speaker 4: high skill set. Um, uh, but they, they create a
- 15:31Speaker 4: lot of problems and you as a defense has got
- 15:33Speaker 4: to be able to handle a lot of different looks
- 15:35Speaker 4: and shifts and motions and, and different types of run plays. Uh,
- 15:39Speaker 4: and they've got a really good, they got really good players.
- 15:42Speaker 4: And so, uh, it's a good challenge for us defensively. Um,
- 15:45Speaker 4: like I said, they, they rely on that run game
- 15:47Speaker 4: and the quarterback being a lot of it, a big
- 15:50Speaker 4: part of it. And so it'll be a good challenge for.
- 15:52Speaker 3: Us this time of year.
- 15:56Speaker 2: And I don't think you're experiencing these problems, but it's
- 15:58Speaker 2: possible that a team can start to read its own
- 16:02Speaker 2: press clippings and see some of the stuff that we're
- 16:05Speaker 2: talking about and all the statistical places where you rank
- 16:09Speaker 2: in the top 13 in the country and all that,
- 16:11Speaker 2: and you can start doing that pat myself on the
- 16:14Speaker 2: back kind of thing and, oh, look how good we
- 16:16Speaker 2: are kind of thing. Do you have to combat that
- 16:19Speaker 2: at all with this group?
- 16:21Speaker 4: A hundred percent. Absolutely. I mean, they're, they're hungry, they're
- 16:25Speaker 4: hungry kids and they've got, you know, a goal and
- 16:29Speaker 4: they've got a direction they want to head. But at
- 16:32Speaker 4: the same time, you as coaches, you're, you know, psychologists,
- 16:36Speaker 4: you're creating that motivation. You're figuring out ways to keep
- 16:40Speaker 4: kids hungry and not let that natural, you know, instinct
- 16:44Speaker 4: of becoming lazy or becoming content creep in and constantly
- 16:49Speaker 4: talking to guys about that. um, here and just making
- 16:53Speaker 4: sure that that's not part of what we do from
- 16:55Speaker 4: a culture standpoint. And, and I think the biggest thing is,
- 16:58Speaker 4: is really from a leadership standpoint, like making sure those
- 17:01Speaker 4: leaders understand how hungry we are and what we have, uh,
- 17:05Speaker 4: the ability to do. And so just keeping those, cause
- 17:09Speaker 4: they're the teams driven within, you know, and those leaders are,
- 17:12Speaker 4: are more so, um, creating that motivation, um, then coaches
- 17:19Speaker 4: and you're sitting in a pretty good spot. And so, yeah, it's,
- 17:22Speaker 4: it's always, it's always definitely a, a deal that we're
- 17:25Speaker 4: working on for sure. I'm not saying that we're doing it,
- 17:28Speaker 4: but he always, when you're four and O and you,
- 17:30Speaker 4: you know, you're moving into a home game and all
- 17:33Speaker 4: that stuff, you want to keep those kids hungry.
- 17:36Speaker 2: Home game, night game, hand-painted whiteout helmets, big topic of
- 17:41Speaker 2: discussion in the fan base. You and I come from
- 17:44Speaker 2: a time where, where you had one helmet and you're
- 17:47Speaker 2: lucky if you got like the good chin strap on
- 17:49Speaker 2: that helmet. And now you got these guys with these
- 17:52Speaker 2: like beautiful works of art on their heads and you
- 17:56Speaker 2: get to do these cool uniform combinations and all that stuff.
- 17:59Speaker 2: Just you're an old cowboy who's a football coach. I mean,
- 18:03Speaker 2: what do you make of this part of college football
- 18:07Speaker 2: right now?
- 18:09Speaker 4: It's awesome. I'm excited for the kids. Obviously, the game's
- 18:12Speaker 4: developed a lot since you and I have played, but
- 18:17Speaker 4: at the end of the day, it's a uniform, meaning
- 18:21Speaker 4: that everybody is wearing the exact same thing. It's there
- 18:25Speaker 4: to play. Protect yourself and make sure, but I don't
- 18:30Speaker 4: think our kids get too caught up in the uniform
- 18:33Speaker 4: and the excitement around it. I think they really are
- 18:36Speaker 4: very mature when it comes to the focus of the opponent.
- 18:41Speaker 4: It's awesome to have the support from the community and
- 18:44Speaker 4: the crowd, and there's no better place than Rice-Eccles Stadium.
- 18:49Speaker 4: I know the added benefit of uniform and helmets and
- 18:53Speaker 4: stuff like that is great for fans.
- 18:57Speaker 2: A couple more minutes here with Colton Swan on the
- 18:59Speaker 2: Sean O'Connell Show, defensive coordinator at the University of Utah.
- 19:03Speaker 2: I saw a couple of your guys out at the
- 19:04Speaker 2: UFC event this past weekend. I know you guys were
- 19:06Speaker 2: all on the recruiting trail as coaches, but saw Ethan
- 19:10Speaker 2: Day and Lance Holtzclaw and Devin Dampier out there at
- 19:12Speaker 2: the UFC event. And I love asking this question. I
- 19:15Speaker 2: usually ask players, but you're stuck with me, so you've
- 19:18Speaker 2: got to answer it.
- 19:19Speaker 3: You've got to put one guy on your team.
- 19:24Speaker 2: Into a cage fight and get a win? Who's the
- 19:26Speaker 2: guy you're putting in there with the highest probability?
- 19:28Speaker 4: Speaker 4, that's a tough question because now you're asking
- 19:32Speaker 4: me to single them out. We got a lot of
- 19:35Speaker 4: guys that I would definitely put in there, you know,
- 19:38Speaker 4: a bunch of cage fighters, guys, you know, that, that
- 19:41Speaker 4: just come to mind, you know, on the defensive side,
- 19:45Speaker 4: the Trey Reynolds is, is a guy that is, you know,
- 19:48Speaker 4: a bruiser and a grinder and he plays that way.
- 19:50Speaker 4: You know, he's, he has a knack for getting to
- 19:53Speaker 4: the football and, and I can see him being a
- 19:56Speaker 4: really good cage fighter. You know, but there's, there's big,
- 20:00Speaker 4: strong guys like, like him all over. And so I
- 20:03Speaker 4: hate to pick one of them out, but if he did,
- 20:05Speaker 4: he said, Hey, this is the one guy I'd go
- 20:06Speaker 4: with Trey Reynolds.
- 20:07Speaker 2: Were you at the team meeting when Anthony went, the
- 20:11Speaker 2: former linebacker in that current UFC fight when he came
- 20:14Speaker 2: and spoke to the team?
- 20:16Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, absolutely.
- 20:18Speaker 3: How'd that go?
- 20:20Speaker 1: Great.
- 20:20Speaker 4: Yeah, it was good motivation. It was fun to see
- 20:23Speaker 4: somebody with a different perspective and talk about what's important and,
- 20:27Speaker 4: you know, their motivation. And I think the guys really
- 20:29Speaker 4: responded well. They enjoyed it.
- 20:31Speaker 2: Did you get a chance to wrestle any livestock on
- 20:34Speaker 2: the bye week?
- 20:36Speaker 4: No, you know, I went for a little bit of
- 20:38Speaker 4: horseback ride. I took my kids up and did that.
- 20:42Speaker 4: I damn near freaking almost injured my daughter pretty good.
- 20:46Speaker 4: She ended up falling off a horse and getting trampled
- 20:49Speaker 4: and all that good stuff. But builds character, right, O.C.
- 20:54Speaker 3: That's, I mean, that's the only way you could look
- 20:56Speaker 3: at it. I hope she's okay. I'm glad she's okay.
- 20:58Speaker 4: She is. Yeah. I'm saying you can chuckle and laugh
- 21:02Speaker 4: because she's fine. But at the moment I was like,
- 21:04Speaker 4: Oh crap.
- 21:05Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 21:05Speaker 2: That's scary stuff, but I'm glad it all worked out.
- 21:08Speaker 2: And you know, she'll be happy that you raised her
- 21:10Speaker 2: that way when she's so, when she's tough.
- 21:14Speaker 4: Yeah. Hope so.
- 21:14Speaker 2: All right.
- 21:15Speaker 3: Well, good luck. We'll see you out there this weekend, coach.
- 21:18Speaker 3: Thanks for your time.
- 21:19Speaker 1: Okay.
- 21:20Speaker 4: Sounds good. Thanks.
- 21:22Speaker 2: That's called Swan defensive coordinator at the university of Utah.
