Latest / Early Edition with Ryan Bridge / Kate Acland: Beef + Lamb NZ Chair on the research finding incentives could help farmers reduce emissions
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: New research from Beef and Lamb says we need more
- 0:02Speaker 1: incentives for farmers rather than charging them for emissions. This
- 0:06Speaker 1: is to wean them off. They say most markets outside
- 0:09Speaker 1: of New Zealand offer incentives for adopting technology and processes.
- 0:13Speaker 1: Kadakin Beef and Lamb, New Zealand chair with us this morning.
- 0:15Speaker 1: Good morning, kay morning, right, So are you not actually
- 0:19Speaker 1: asking for subsidies and incentives here are you?
- 0:23Speaker 2: Now? Look what this report does is it looks at
- 0:25Speaker 2: what's happening in climate change policy with regard to agricultural
- 0:29Speaker 2: emissions across the world. And that's really important because we
- 0:32Speaker 2: sell on a global stage and as you know, recently
- 0:35Speaker 2: our methane targets have been revived and taking we took
- 0:40Speaker 2: pricing of agricultural emissions off the table, and you know
- 0:43Speaker 2: that might have felt like a bit of a backward step,
- 0:45Speaker 2: but actually that just puts us right in line with
- 0:47Speaker 2: what the rest of the world's doing. And that's a
- 0:50Speaker 2: really important thing.
- 0:51Speaker 1: So we have a twenty to fifty target, but we
- 0:53Speaker 1: have no steps to get there, right.
- 0:57Speaker 2: Most of the rest of the world doesn't have agricultural
- 0:59Speaker 2: specific targets. And you know what this also showed is
- 1:03Speaker 2: that internationally, a lot of most countries are looking at
- 1:07Speaker 2: subsidizing their farmers to reach any or you know, incentivizing
- 1:11Speaker 2: their farmers to reach any reductions, and one's not doing that,
- 1:16Speaker 2: And we're not necessarily calling for that, but we're just
- 1:19Speaker 2: saying that we need to have an eye on what
- 1:20Speaker 2: the rest of the world's doing, and we need to
- 1:22Speaker 2: be smarter and refocus on reduction through efficiency, efficiency gains,
- 1:26Speaker 2: or addressing things like fossil fuel emissions where we've actually
- 1:29Speaker 2: got the technology to do it easily.
- 1:31Speaker 1: Kate. I know what the climate people are going to
- 1:33Speaker 1: say to you, Kate. They're going to say, well, the
- 1:36Speaker 1: agriculture missions in u Zena make up more of our
- 1:40Speaker 1: greenhouse gases like half as opposed to the Aussies who
- 1:43Speaker 1: you've mentioned in this report are on eighteen percent.
- 1:48Speaker 2: Yeah. Look, I mean absolutely acknowledge that and acknowledge that
- 1:51Speaker 2: we've all got a role to play. But you know,
- 1:52Speaker 2: as I said, there's there are existing technologies and ways
- 1:56Speaker 2: to address things like fossil fuel emissions, and we should
- 1:58Speaker 2: focus on that and look while we sort of play
- 2:02Speaker 2: catch up and find out what were the agriculture space.
- 2:05Speaker 2: But look, as I said before, we compete globally, we
- 2:10Speaker 2: sell our products globally. We've got to have an eye
- 2:12Speaker 2: to what the rest of the world is doing about
- 2:14Speaker 2: emissions from food production and we can't lose sight of
- 2:17Speaker 2: the fact that actually we are a food producing nation.
- 2:21Speaker 1: Okayin Eckland, Beef and Land, New Zealand share good TV
