- 0:06Many years ago I worked at the Centro Preventivo y de Readaptación Social, which
- 0:10is in Ecatepec, in the State of Mexico. It is also known as
- 0:14Chiconautla prison was in the middle of October of those years when a peculiar-
- 0:20looking inmate arrived and sees that there are always rare people in prisons, but
- 0:25that guy was in another category of weirdness. I' d like to give
- 0:31his name in case someone happens to know him, because no one ever went
- 0:35to see him and the truth doesn' t surprise me, but someone must
- 0:38know him. That' s for sure. Unfortunately, giving his name is
- 0:42illegal. When I saw him in the distance, when he was barely being
- 0:47brought in, he seemed like a normal man. He was brown. I
- 0:50calculated him about thirty years. He seemed to have been caught with his hands
- 0:55in the dough, because he arrived without a shirt and barefoot. All he
- 0:59was wearing was a black denim pants. He was holding it because apparently,
- 1:03it wasn' t his size. When I saw him pass by me,
- 1:07half a bad thorn, his hair looked oily, his eyes were two different
- 1:12colors, one gray and the other yellow. His jaw was very pronounced and
- 1:19he looked strong. The guy smelled different. It didn' t stink dirty
- 1:26Its smell was more like a mixture of rotten meat gas and blood, something
- 1:30very rare. I asked the custodians where they had taken him and they replied
- 1:34that they had grabbed him in the courtyard of a sleeping house next to the
- 1:38lifeless body, a child and a dog. The neighbors of that house were
- 1:44the ones who had made a call to report that in a wasteland near the
- 1:48colony they had found the body of one of their neighbors. I had big
- 1:53bites when they went to the dead woman' s house, there was the
- 1:57guy. One of the custodians made a mocking meal and said something like that
- 2:01he had shut the dagger' s mouth. The dagger was a companion who
- 2:06was always saying that he was the strongest of all of us, that he
- 2:10was good for beatings and that he was always sent to grab strong subjects because
- 2:15he could subdue them. Surprise took me when I saw the dago enter.
- 2:21It came all hit and with a face of brutal annoyance. He went by
- 2:24without saying hello or anything behind him. He was coming to another partner,
- 2:30I asked him what had happened. Turns out when they woke up the detainee,
- 2:35he went crazy. The dago gave them to him as brave and wanted
- 2:38to subject him alone, but he did not last a minute for the detainee.
- 2:42Among the other three, he had to be removed from his hands so
- 2:46that the dago would not end up dead. The detainee did not say anything
- 2:50during his statement, nor his name, nor anything seemed mute. We didn
- 2:54' t know if at least he spoke Spanish. Like he didn' t
- 2:59say anything. He was charged with all the charges of the day and he
- 3:01didn' t appeal, so we put him in his cell. When the
- 3:06dago left the infirmary, he asked where we had put the new inmate.
- 3:10The partner intended to move him. From Cella to put him in a nearby
- 3:15place of the most troubled, to be given a lesson, because in the
- 3:20place where we had put him were quiet people, because we didn' t
- 3:23want him to beat himself up with everyone. If he had beaten the dago,
- 3:28he could kill more than one of the prisoners. We told him it
- 3:32was not necessary to move him, but he became foolish and went to move
- 3:38him, but it was only because no one wanted to accompany him. I
- 3:42went to look a little far in case he took care of anything when he
- 3:46moved him and took him to his new cell. At the time of passing
- 3:51through the corridor that had cells on both sides, the comments and laughter of
- 3:55the other inmates were heard. It was normal that reception in s among them,
- 4:00they already knew that the dago was taking him there to be beaten.
- 4:04It hadn' t been a half hour since he was left with the troublemakers.
- 4:09When desperate screams began to be heard, four went to see who was
- 4:15beating the new one, but they remained silent when they saw that the one
- 4:18who was shouting was one of the worst inmates in the prison. The new
- 4:24man had broken all his fingers in one hand and had it on his neck.
- 4:29None of the four dared to struggle with the new inmate. They had
- 4:33to yell at him until he let go. The prisoner they had to rescue
- 4:38didn' t have a good time at night, and everyone knew that someone
- 4:42had bent it and that' s the worst thing that could happen to an
- 4:46inmate. People who had to share a cell with the new one preferred sleeping
- 4:50in the hallway because that guy had caused them the same feeling he gave me
- 4:55when I first saw him. The next day there was a rumor among the
- 5:00inmates that during the morning the strange noise similar to that of a dog had
- 5:04been heard. That same week, the strange inmate had a strong encounter with
- 5:11one of the guards when he was on the tour at an hour when everyone
- 5:15was supposed to be inside his cells. The prisoner demanded that he be given
- 5:18some raw meat. Evidently, the guard ignored him. Then the prisoner pulled
- 5:25his arm out of the cell, grabbed the guard' s arm and pulled
- 5:29him inward. As if he wanted to get him through bars making his face
- 5:33hit very hard against bars. He tried to free himself, but he didn
- 5:39' t make it, so without a choice, he pulled his gun and
- 5:43shot him in the leg, but the prisoner didn' t react as if
- 5:47it didn' t hurt him. He still had the guard. Strongly held
- 5:51he fired again and then the prisoner released him. The sound of both shots
- 5:58made the entire prison remain silent. The prisoners, who witnessed that, could
- 6:02not believe it. Speaking to the guard, he said a couple of weird
- 6:08facts mentioned that after the first shot, the inmate' s eyes changed color.
- 6:13According to the two eyes they became a deep red color. He also
- 6:17said that the detainee had grunted like a dog. That thing about me grunting
- 6:24like a dog. It was suspiciously similar to what those in the hallway who
- 6:29had heard dog grunts had said. I don' t remember if it was
- 6:33one of the guards or one of those who worked in the kitchen, but
- 6:38someone mentioned that it looked like that man was an agual that naval thing.
- 6:42It was nothing new. I was already a few years old that I had
- 6:46heard that in Ecatepec there was an avalanche. Like many people, he had
- 6:50a friend who claimed to have met the navaal and managed to escape alive.
- 6:57The thing about the so- called weird prisoner being an avalanche was just like
- 7:00a gossip. Release One week passed, one night a riot broke loose.
- 7:06He wasn' t the first to touch me, nor was he the most
- 7:11violent. Many prisoners were out of control, including the weird one. He
- 7:15separated from the riot group and went to a remote area near the periphery.
- 7:23I didn' t see this because I was trying to control the situation,
- 7:27but I found out from people who saw it. As soon as midnight came,
- 7:32the prisoner began to emit a guttural sound. His face was reddened by
- 7:36effort. Then he began to walk in circles using his four limbs as if
- 7:43he were a dog. I made a sound that I didn' t know
- 7:47exactly how to describe, but they said it was a pretty serious sound.
- 7:51Then they noticed how the veins of his arms were highlighted. Following that,
- 7:57he began to hear as if his bones were retreading as the vertebrae of his
- 8:01spine began to protrude from his back. One could say that the prisoner became
- 8:07what the witnesses described as a vaal. Then he ran away, leaving the
- 8:13few astonished witnesses. When all this came to my ears, I remained very
- 8:18skeptical. Honestly, of course I believed in the navals, but it'
- 8:24s one thing to believe that somewhere one of those monsters must walk and something
- 8:28very different, even to consider that one of the prisoners who came to Chiconautla
- 8:33was actually a naval. The probability of meeting a genuine nagual should be virtually
- 8:39zero. That' s why I stayed skeptical. However, with the passing
- 8:45of weeks and months things began to happen in the vicinity. I found out
- 8:50from the relatives of some prisoners. I understand that many of us who have
- 8:56worked in prisons have a very bad reputation. And it' s not like
- 8:58I was a talking pigeon. I did my things, but at least I
- 9:03never did anything against those who behaved well inside the prison. I could even
- 9:09say that there were four inmates whom I considered friends, especially because I knew
- 9:13some member of his family and when they went to visit them, we never
- 9:20needed to talk about one or two things, and so I learned of rare
- 9:24situations that were happening. The first was at Whitzila Colony in Hidalgo. They
- 9:30had found a woman' s body. The crime scene was identical to the
- 9:35one we had awarded the strange prisoner. Then, in the neighborhood of La
- 9:39Cruz There by Temascalapa being more specific in the terrain that is between the streets
- 9:46Álamos and Jorge Jiménez. There was the sighting of a mysterious creature that looked
- 9:50like a giant dog. Then, at the Abastos headquarters on its way to
- 9:56Tulancingo, something had killed some dogs. They had been bitten to death and,
- 10:01according to what they told me, they were not dog bites. And
- 10:05so things continued to happen until one night I was going from jail to my
- 10:11house on a motorcycle. He wasn' t making much progress yet. I
- 10:16had just passed the dump when a little later, between the bushes I was
- 10:20pictured seeing a silhouette that looked at me immediately I stopped because before there I
- 10:26had already been assaulted. That first time I had tried to get past the
- 10:31bike fast, but I got shot. That' s why, when I
- 10:35saw something moving in the bushes, I stopped. My intention was to turn
- 10:39around and walk away to avoid danger. But before he did, that which
- 10:43was hidden behind the bushes came out and stood before him. He wasn'
- 10:48t a thief, he wasn' t even a human being. It wasn
- 10:52' t an animal either. It was like an intermediate point between beast and
- 10:56person. He grunted at me in a way and in which a dog definitely
- 11:01doesn' t grunt. The sound looked more like the bears make. Of
- 11:05course, the creature in front of me wasn' t a bear. His
- 11:09snout was long and he could see huge fangs. I didn' t have
- 11:13any hair. Her skin gave the impression of being impregnated by the roña.
- 11:18His ears were long, pointed and crooked. They almost looked like horns.
- 11:24His limbs looked very long, but the creature did not look tall, because
- 11:28his legs had them bent in a very rare way. One thing I don
- 11:33' t forget is that her eyes were deeply black. The eyes of any
- 11:39animal reflect the lights, but the eyes of that creature did not reflect the
- 11:43light. That I was coming from the lighthouse of my motorcycle I couldn'
- 11:48t tell if I had a tail or not, because my view was frontal.
- 11:52I was paralyzed for a few brief moments, but when that creature got
- 11:58up on two legs, I reacted s s s to run back to the
- 12:00bike and I started fast the monster started to run after me. I didn
- 12:05' t know when he stopped following me, but the less I remembered,
- 12:11he didn' t run after me anymore. If you ask me, I
- 12:13do. I think what I saw and chased was a gual and it'
- 12:16s a big coincidence that I found him after that prisoner' s escape.
- 12:20Strange that a few witnesses swore to me by their mother that they saw him
- 12:26as transformed into a horrible beast. The story I' m going to tell
- 12:37happened to me more than forty years ago. I now have fifty- five
- 12:41recently completed them. I' m not Mexican by birth, but I'
- 12:46ve lived here practically my whole life. I studied here from elementary school to
- 12:50college. Therefore, I identify myself as Mexican. In short, we had
- 12:56just left the country in which we lived and moved to Veracruz it was very
- 13:01difficult to adapt more than anything because of the climate that, at least in
- 13:05that area of Veracruz, the climate was completely different from the climate that I
- 13:11was used to. There I met the fans, because where we lived before
- 13:16there was no reason they were not necessary, it was not hot, but
- 13:20in Veracruz, especially in the season, when we arrived, the heat was
- 13:24horrible. We finally got used to it and we could already play and run,
- 13:31even if it was a little bit without feeling suffocated. It had been
- 13:35a few months before certain strangeness began to occur. One of the first ones,
- 13:39in fact, happened to me was lunchtime, so I went down,
- 13:43but before I got my toys settled. In a certain place and in a
- 13:48certain way, I was always very obsessive about having everything accommodated. That'
- 13:52s why I remember that experience. I finished the food plate. I don
- 13:58' t remember what it was. My father was not used to eating a
- 14:01fruit after food, because he said that way the teeth kept less dirty.
- 14:07When I finished the dish, I grabbed an apple and then went to my
- 14:11room. The moment he walked in right away, I realized he wasn'
- 14:15t like I had left him. He was well- off in another way.
- 14:20Besides, the toys I had been using before I went down to eat
- 14:24weren' t all at the same time and I was the first to get
- 14:30up from the table. Therefore, I knew that no one had entered my
- 14:33room to move them. Besides, my sisters never liked my toys. I
- 14:39went back to the table. My sisters and parents were still there. I
- 14:43told them about the room and they told me that, I was sure that
- 14:46way I had made things better, but that I just didn' t remember.
- 14:50I' ve never been to argue. That' s why I didn
- 14:54' t plead, but I knew something had happened in the room. I
- 14:58spent the rest of the day looking for my toys, but I never found
- 15:01them. I turned the whole house around about two or three times and nothing.
- 15:05The toys had vanished as if by magic. That may have just been
- 15:11a curious event, but a week later, my sisters told my mom that
- 15:16a doll of each one had been lost. My mother, the first thing
- 15:22she did was blame me. He assumed that, perhaps I believed my sisters
- 15:26had lost my toys and by way of revenge, I had done something wrong
- 15:31to their wrists. When my father arrived from work, my mother told him
- 15:37to scold me, but instead, he asked me to tell him everything I
- 15:39had done on the day in order and for hours afterwards he spoke to my
- 15:43sisters and asked them at what point they had lost their wrists. It turned
- 15:50out that when his wrists disappeared, I was taking a bath. Therefore,
- 15:56it was not possible that I had taken them. My sisters made a tantrum.
- 16:02My father ignored them and went to lie down at dinner. I went
- 16:06to my room and my mother trying to calm my sisters helped them look for
- 16:11the dolls did the same thing I had done days before, going around the
- 16:15house several times without finding anything. The situation got a little more complicated when
- 16:22something else was lost at the end of the month. But it wasn'
- 16:26t a toy. It was nothing of mine or of my sisters. The
- 16:30object that was lost was an expensive gold watch that my mother had inherited from
- 16:33her grandmother. My mother had an invaluable emotional bond with that watch, not
- 16:40only because her grandmother had given it to her, but because that watch was
- 16:44the only object left of our life in the previous country. Considering that context,
- 16:49it was not strange to me that my mother went completely mad when she
- 16:55realized that her precious watch had disappeared. She wouldn' t even try to
- 17:00blame us, because she was aware that my sisters and I didn' t
- 17:06know where she kept that watch. Mom put her head room, emptied the
- 17:11drawers, pulled the dresses out of her closet and emptied my father' s
- 17:15closet. He removed the mattress, moved the bed base, removed everything he
- 17:19had on the shelves, checked every inch inside those four walls and couldn'
- 17:25t find his watch. When Dad arrived, he found her inconsolable. My
- 17:30mother was in a sea of tears, screaming and fanning things, a set
- 17:34of cups for the porcelain ceiling. My sisters and I had to be very
- 17:41well behaved for the rest of the week not to make her angry, because
- 17:45we knew that if Mom was angry, we would go very badly. We
- 17:48all went to the market on Sunday. It was placed on the main avenue
- 17:53of the village about twenty minutes in the car that my father had. In
- 17:59one of the posts sns I saw some figures that caught my attention a lot.
- 18:03They were like rare animals, but painted of all colors. I parted
- 18:07a little bit from my mother to go see those figures. When my mom
- 18:11realized it, she came with me and before she pulled me in the ear,
- 18:15the person who was in charge of the position, who was already a
- 18:19fairly old woman, asked my mother if strange things did not happen to her
- 18:23home. My mother, somewhat puzzled by that woman' s question, replied
- 18:29yes, and then he questioned her how she knew that. To what the
- 18:33woman told him is that, far behind that tree, I noticed that a
- 18:38chane who was watching you and your family, My mother frowned like she wanted
- 18:42to imply that I had not even the slightest idea that it was that mint
- 18:48chaneque the lady explained to my mother that the chaneques were entities belonging to the
- 18:52underworld, dangerous creatures, that they surrounded places with lots of vegetation that,
- 18:59at best, would make us have bad times, but if they wanted to,
- 19:03they could even kill one of us. Getting into the talk, I
- 19:11asked him how we could know those beings were inside the house. The lady
- 19:18' s response caused me a lot of fear, because I felt it overwhelming
- 19:23she said you miss things that can' t be missed. My mother pulled
- 19:27my arm and we walked away from there. As we walked to where my
- 19:33father and my sisters were. Mom threatened me by saying that if I was
- 19:37commenting on something she had told us, the old lady would go really wrong.
- 19:40In addition, he added that all that was pure Nonsense days later,
- 19:45when my mother was going to serve breakfast, she realized that there was not
- 19:49a single dish in the cupboard or sink. Dad was just getting to the
- 19:56dining room. I gestured to him to understand that my mother was about to
- 20:00explode. Then, before Mom told her something, she put a big smile
- 20:04and sent her to change, because we' d go out to eat her
- 20:10like she wanted to plead. But Dad repeated to him that he was going
- 20:14to change and he did. As soon as my mother got into her room,
- 20:18Dad asked me what had happened. I told him all the dishes were
- 20:21gone. He just buffed and told us that we too were going to change
- 20:27in order to avoid conflict because of the lack of dishes. We were outside
- 20:30the house all day. We arrived at night before we went to sleep.
- 20:37My mom said that the next day we would go to mass, because surely
- 20:41what was happening in the house was because I wasn' t going to church.
- 20:45The next day, which was Sunday, we went to church. When
- 20:51the Mass was over. My parents stayed for a moment talking to the priest,
- 20:55My sisters were with them and I was standing at the doors of the
- 20:59church. That' s where a little girl came up to me and asked
- 21:03me where she was from. I told him and then I asked him if
- 21:06he knew anything about the chaneques. The girl, very quiet, as if
- 21:10it were anything, told me that the chaneques stole the souls of the people
- 21:14who kept them in a jar and then ate them. Over the next few
- 21:21weeks, objects, small but remarkable things, continued to be lost. The
- 21:26salt boat, a towel, some shoe every day was something. One day,
- 21:32while we were all having dinner, we heard a very clear, unmistakable
- 21:37cry. It wasn' t a slight sound. It was clearly a cry
- 21:41Sitting at the table, we exchanged glances waiting for one of us to say
- 21:48something, but no one did. We ended dinner quietly and then went to
- 21:51bed the next day. Again, during dinner we heard again something that was
- 21:57not to be heard on that occasion. It wasn' t tears, it
- 22:02was laughter. Not a laugh, macabre or intimidating. It was a laugh
- 22:07like kids playing my dads. They realized that my sisters and I were scared.
- 22:12That night we slept in the room with them. In the early morning,
- 22:17I half got out of the room for a drink. When I was
- 22:21on my way back to my parents' room. At the bottom outside the
- 22:25bathroom, I could see a creature was the size of the least of my
- 22:30sisters. Her skin was like gray, greenish, her ears, instead of
- 22:33being glued to her face, they had them as exits to the sides that
- 22:37creature of little stature looked at me confused and then went into the bathroom,
- 22:44but did not open the door, only went through it. I had to
- 22:48go to my room and change my scare clothes. I had peed at breakfast
- 22:55and told my mother what had happened. Dad wasn' t here because he
- 23:00found himself working. My mom kept thinking for a moment. Then, quietly,
- 23:06I said that maybe what I had seen was a chaneque my sisters asked
- 23:08what that was. Mom ordered me to shut up, but I didn'
- 23:15t do it and I took advantage of it to comment on what the girl
- 23:21had told me when we went to church, that the chaneques were stealing and
- 23:25eating people' s souls. I' d better be quiet My mother went
- 23:30crazy and beat me up in my life. When my father arrived and gave
- 23:33me in the state in which he had left me, my mother spoke to
- 23:37him to question her about what happened. My mother told him I was lying.
- 23:42Dad defended me and reminded him that the last time she didn' t
- 23:47believe me it turned out that I was telling the truth. My father meant
- 23:51when my sisters' dolls were lost. This I would like not to say,
- 23:57but it is important for what comes next. My father was upset because
- 24:02it was already twice that my mother accused me of being a liar, in
- 24:06addition to having left me very beaten, gave him a very strong slap,
- 24:11only one with open hand. With that slap he sent my mother straight to
- 24:15the ground the next day, As soon as my father went to work,
- 24:19the lady of the market, who had told us about the chaneques, arrived.
- 24:23He saw the bruise my mother had on her face. I was sitting
- 24:27in the dining room that you could see from the door and that' s
- 24:32why the lady also noticed my blows. The woman told my mother that we
- 24:37were falling right where the chaneques wanted and warned her that if we didn'
- 24:41t do something about it, someone would die very soon. In order not
- 24:47to extend too much, my mom told my dad about the chaneques and also
- 24:51told him that the lady was offering to help us. It turned out that
- 24:55the lady was kind of a witch, that the five of us had to
- 24:59do a ritual in or that three white- tailed deers would be sacrificed,
- 25:03that the ritual would help a little, but it was not a guarantee that,
- 25:07in the worst case, we would have to leave the city for the
- 25:11chaneques to leave us alone. My father accepted and the five of us went
- 25:15to the woman' s house to be able to do the ritual, trusting
- 25:18that that would put an end to our bad situation. When we arrived,
- 25:22the woman in her yard already had the three white- tailed deers tied,
- 25:27explained the ritual step by step. First my mother would take three glasses of
- 25:33glass and fill them with the brew that was inside the cauldron then give me
- 25:37and my two sisters a glass. Then the three of us would give that
- 25:42brew to the deers. When the animals took the liquid, they would die
- 25:48a few seconds later, my father would have to take a dagger and pull
- 25:52both eyes out of each dead deer. That was very traumatic for me and
- 25:56I' m absolutely sure it wasn' t for my sisters too, so
- 26:02much so that I just remembered them. I get total goose bumps. We
- 26:07did the ritual. Then the woman put her six deer eyes into syrup and,
- 26:11finally, sewed us on bracelets that she already had made. My parents
- 26:15and sisters were given a bracelet, but I got two, because I had
- 26:18seen one. Therefore, he was the one who needed more protection. The
- 26:26bracelets served for a few months, we jumped year round and little by little
- 26:30strange things began to happen. Again we returned to the woman with the intention
- 26:34of performing the ritual again, but she told us that it could no longer
- 26:37be done, that it only worked once that the only thing we could do
