- 1:14Speaker 5: Northwestern week. We're five and two, coming off the loss,
- 1:18Speaker 5: embarrassing loss. How will we respond? That's all I got
- 1:26Speaker 5: for today?
- 1:27Speaker 6: Wow? Maybe that in depth analysis. What are we gonna
- 1:30Speaker 6: do this week?
- 1:31Speaker 7: Well, I don't know.
- 1:32Speaker 6: We'll see what happens.
- 1:32Speaker 4: We'll see what happens.
- 1:35Speaker 7: Actually prepare for Northwestern Maybe.
- 1:40Speaker 6: I believe dak I would really hope, So you know what,
- 1:44Speaker 6: everything maybe that's gonna start here. Players only meeting. That's
- 1:48Speaker 6: how you know the season's going exactly the way as planned.
- 1:51Speaker 8: Yep, that's you know, that never happens with teams that
- 1:54Speaker 8: are on like a hot streak. That's that's the only
- 1:56Speaker 8: way it's about rock bottom.
- 2:00Speaker 5: I still can't get over a lot of Husker fans
- 2:04Speaker 5: and probably the coaches and players as well, just can't
- 2:07Speaker 5: get over.
- 2:08Speaker 4: What happened in that Minnesota game. It does. It just
- 2:12Speaker 4: feels like the whole season, like even talking about falling
- 2:16Speaker 4: off a cliff.
- 2:18Speaker 5: Definitely fell off a cliff here, maybe multiple cliffs heading
- 2:23Speaker 5: Intoto Northwestern this week. And while I don't obviously think
- 2:27Speaker 5: the season's over and nobody thinks that.
- 2:29Speaker 4: It's how we respond this week. We're still five and two.
- 2:35Speaker 6: I said we're five and two. I'm not spiraling yet.
- 2:39Speaker 4: It is one of those things that.
- 2:43Speaker 5: It hurts and I can't get over it. I don't
- 2:47Speaker 5: think a lot of people can get over the Minnesota
- 2:48Speaker 5: thing yet. And given that was still a lot of
- 2:53Speaker 5: the conversation this week, it is. It just it wasn't
- 2:59Speaker 5: good good. But we still have a game to play
- 3:03Speaker 5: in in the Northwestern Wildcats, and it probably is the
- 3:10Speaker 5: best case scenario of an opponent you could face this week.
- 3:15Speaker 4: Out of anybody else that you could play in the
- 3:18Speaker 4: Big Ten.
- 3:20Speaker 5: Because they do a lot of the same things as
- 3:23Speaker 5: Minnesota and the things that you just got your ass
- 3:26Speaker 5: kicked on. You have a chance to redeem yourself improved
- 3:30Speaker 5: that what you just witnessed last Friday night is not
- 3:35Speaker 5: actually how this team plays prepares handles a team like Minnesota.
- 3:41Speaker 5: You have a chance to reading yourself. So and it's
- 3:44Speaker 5: not like you're playing a better Minnesota team. You're playing
- 3:48Speaker 5: someone that's probably in the same ballpark, maybe even a
- 3:50Speaker 5: little less.
- 3:51Speaker 7: So it's like you're just already say it's base case
- 3:54Speaker 7: scenario because they're the worst team in the Big Ten.
- 3:56Speaker 7: I was already do it.
- 3:59Speaker 6: The third team in the Big Ten right now, seven
- 4:02Speaker 6: games into the season, fourth team. They're tied for third,
- 4:06Speaker 6: I believe. But they're totally behind Oregon because the overall record.
- 4:10Speaker 8: Now, they haven't really played anybody that tough in Big
- 4:12Speaker 8: Ten yet but Michigan, but they we lost.
- 4:20Speaker 6: Yeah, that's they'd be northwesterns at least beat Penn State. Yeah,
- 4:25Speaker 6: Greames Franklin.
- 4:26Speaker 7: Fired, also got their ass kicks by Tulane, so we don't.
- 4:33Speaker 4: That's true.
- 4:33Speaker 8: Jerry still out on me for Northwestern, but I guess yeah.
- 4:38Speaker 7: You said same same exact thing. What Mannesota is gonna do.
- 4:43Speaker 6: They beat UCLA by three, Ucla might be good.
- 4:46Speaker 7: Yeah, I don't know.
- 4:49Speaker 4: As it's college football, it's.
- 4:53Speaker 5: The teams that are not very good and and and
- 4:56Speaker 5: actually I think the coaches, all the coaches said this
- 5:00Speaker 5: at some point this week in their press conferences.
- 5:03Speaker 4: Teams that don't.
- 5:04Speaker 5: Play very good, teams that aren't very good can play
- 5:07Speaker 5: good and weeks, and teams that are pretty good can
- 5:10Speaker 5: have bad weeks. And so they're trying to frame it
- 5:13Speaker 5: like we're a pretty good team and we just had
- 5:15Speaker 5: a really bad week. You hope that's the case, and
- 5:18Speaker 5: the things that we saw weren't reality. But at the
- 5:22Speaker 5: same time, like we said, it's it. We had moments
- 5:28Speaker 5: against Maryland Michigan State that didn't look good. We obviously
- 5:33Speaker 5: came out and won those games, so we can overshadow
- 5:38Speaker 5: a little bit some of the problems that we saw
- 5:41Speaker 5: glaringly against Minnesota and hopefully improve on them. But it's
- 5:48Speaker 5: college football for you. It's just, especially in today's.
- 5:52Speaker 4: World, it's parody. Getta love it.
- 5:57Speaker 6: And mean, what was it last week? Like nine time
- 6:00Speaker 6: twenty five teams lost something ridiculous?
- 6:04Speaker 7: Well, wait, here's the best example of it.
- 6:06Speaker 8: Florida State kicked the shit out of Alabama week one,
- 6:08Speaker 8: and look look at Florida State is now three or
- 6:10Speaker 8: four in Alabamas looking like one of the best teams
- 6:13Speaker 8: nation now. So so yeah, teams, we hope it's just
- 6:18Speaker 8: like that team's gonna have a bad week.
- 6:21Speaker 6: Thank him.
- 6:23Speaker 7: Yeah, I would just be.
- 6:24Speaker 5: Bad you said that, And this is completely derailing the conversation.
- 6:30Speaker 5: But we have a recruit coming this week that is
- 6:38Speaker 5: also has offers from Florida State and I think it
- 6:40Speaker 5: was NC State, maybe a defensive lineman for the next
- 6:46Speaker 5: year's class. We don't have a defensive lineman in next
- 6:49Speaker 5: year's class yet, So I'm like, well, that's just lovely.
- 6:51Speaker 7: Oh that's good.
- 6:53Speaker 8: Yep, that's uh not, Like can you use that position
- 6:57Speaker 8: very hard?
- 6:59Speaker 5: It so frustrating, Like, like I said, be cutting it rural,
- 7:05Speaker 5: be cutting edge, if you donna be cutting edge and
- 7:08Speaker 5: something to be cutting edge on spending the most money
- 7:10Speaker 5: on offensive defensive lines and make it known that's what
- 7:13Speaker 5: we're doing. That that would be a place where I
- 7:16Speaker 5: would be very happy to be cutting edge on right now.
- 7:24Speaker 6: I mean, yeah, I'm trying to think, isn't that the
- 7:30Speaker 6: guy who decommitted from Penn State or is that someone else?
- 7:33Speaker 4: I don't even know. So that was a side conversation
- 7:43Speaker 4: press conferences.
- 7:44Speaker 5: This week we'll get to Northwestern, I guess, and talk
- 7:46Speaker 5: about the game a little bit, but the meats or
- 7:52Speaker 5: the conversations this week definitely was on the press conferences.
- 7:57Speaker 5: It's this is when it's fun. When you lose, you
- 8:00Speaker 5: have a lot of stuff to talk about.
- 8:01Speaker 6: Great great winning is not fun.
- 8:04Speaker 7: It makes it a lot more fun now that the
- 8:08Speaker 7: week make the week.
- 8:10Speaker 8: After more fun as a fan, No, but it's it gives.
- 8:14Speaker 7: You a lot more talking points.
- 8:17Speaker 4: So Monday Rule spoke.
- 8:21Speaker 5: Tuesday, Dana and John Butler spoke, and then some players,
- 8:26Speaker 5: which is which is normal? Uh, And Monday Rule comes
- 8:30Speaker 5: out fiery guns blazing, very I mean cut Sam mceu
- 8:41Speaker 5: and not very early on and and and it just
- 8:45Speaker 5: explained some things.
- 8:47Speaker 4: And and and called a lot.
- 8:49Speaker 5: Of things out basically just thing it's not acceptable. And
- 8:52Speaker 5: and then Tuesday followed up with Dana and John Butler
- 9:00Speaker 5: in the players. But the coaches specifically took a lot
- 9:03Speaker 5: of responsibility, all three of them did for Monday and Tuesday,
- 9:09Speaker 5: almost to the point that it was like I don't
- 9:12Speaker 5: want to say too much, but it was a lot.
- 9:14Speaker 4: He just kept saying, it's on us, which I'll ask
- 9:19Speaker 4: you guys, like what what what what does that mean
- 9:21Speaker 4: to you?
- 9:21Speaker 5: Like because we've seen the opposite, right, we not just
- 9:26Speaker 5: in Nebraska, but we've seen coaches call people out and
- 9:31Speaker 5: then blame things on other people other.
- 9:38Speaker 4: Things that are going on. Like it was a lot.
- 9:41Speaker 4: I mean, there's a lot of responsibility that that they're taking.
- 9:45Speaker 6: Well, I mean not only were they taking the blame
- 9:48Speaker 6: rules like our defense is vanilla, we weren't aggressive, and
- 9:52Speaker 6: it was like kind of calling out his own coaches
- 9:55Speaker 6: as well, like he was calling out his I mean,
- 9:57Speaker 6: he took a lot of blame.
- 9:58Speaker 4: But that you're right, it was.
- 10:02Speaker 5: It's a combination because there was calling out, but then
- 10:05Speaker 5: it'd be like, yeah, our defense is very vanilla, but but.
- 10:09Speaker 4: That's on me. But that's on me as the head coach.
- 10:11Speaker 4: That's on me. Like it just was very which it is.
- 10:16Speaker 5: I I agree with him, but he also, as we know,
- 10:20Speaker 5: speaks his mind, and things came out and led to
- 10:25Speaker 5: his his press conference Monday led to some fun questions
- 10:30Speaker 5: on Tuesday for the players and coaches and and so yeah.
- 10:38Speaker 5: I think to me, it's a good thing, uh that
- 10:43Speaker 5: you're doing that. It's better to take responsibility, and it's
- 10:46Speaker 5: also it's an easy way of handling a lot of
- 10:50Speaker 5: questions Nope, yep, my fault.
- 10:52Speaker 4: But when you do that over and over and over
- 10:55Speaker 4: and over, you better start to show results and change
- 11:00Speaker 4: from doing that.
- 11:02Speaker 6: I think some of the intention behind doing that is
- 11:05Speaker 6: if you come out and be like, yeah, our players
- 11:08Speaker 6: played terrible after that bad of a game all of
- 11:13Speaker 6: a sudden, you don't want to lose any of the
- 11:15Speaker 6: confidence that you built up through the first five wins
- 11:18Speaker 6: of the season. Correct If you come out and be like, yeah,
- 11:21Speaker 6: they our kids just got their asses kicked, which it
- 11:25Speaker 6: was definitely not just the coach's faults. There was plenty
- 11:28Speaker 6: of open field tackles missed out there, Like that's not
- 11:31Speaker 6: you know, I'm not gonna say it was all schematic stuff.
- 11:35Speaker 6: We made a lot of contact behind them line a
- 11:37Speaker 6: scrimmag against Minnesota that resulted in six seven yard games.
- 11:44Speaker 6: But you don't want to come out and just be like, yeah,
- 11:46Speaker 6: they played horrible. We had a good game plan. I mean,
- 11:49Speaker 6: you wouldn't do that, but you just need to let
- 11:51Speaker 6: them know or at least make them frost it Croft
- 11:55Speaker 6: sure did, and how that work out. You need to
- 11:58Speaker 6: make them You just don't want them to start thinking like, well,
- 12:00Speaker 6: we're not good enough. Those first five wins were flukes.
- 12:03Speaker 6: You know this year is gonna be another thing. I
- 12:06Speaker 6: mean last year we won five games and then we
- 12:08Speaker 6: spiraled and lost the next four, next five, right, So
- 12:16Speaker 6: you just want to prevent that. So you don't want
- 12:18Speaker 6: you just don't want them to lose their confidence. And
- 12:20Speaker 6: then if they're already having players only meetings, you know,
- 12:23Speaker 6: you know, they know, you know, they're not Your kids
- 12:28Speaker 6: aren't out there, your your athletes aren't thinking that this
- 12:31Speaker 6: was that this was the coach's fault, So you don't
- 12:34Speaker 6: need to double down on that.
- 12:37Speaker 8: Ere's ear though I picked up from all the Compress
- 12:39Speaker 8: conferences is.
- 12:42Speaker 6: Rule.
- 12:44Speaker 7: It sounded like Rule.
- 12:49Speaker 8: Took Minnesota seriesly to the point and all these other
- 12:52Speaker 8: coaches really didn't and they took that responsibility. So it
- 12:57Speaker 8: does sound like they didn't, which I all week, I've
- 13:00Speaker 8: been trying to figure out why, why the hell were
- 13:04Speaker 8: they not taking them Minnesota seriously at all? Like where
- 13:08Speaker 8: did where did this confidence come from? That Minnesota was
- 13:11Speaker 8: that they were just gonna walk over Minnesota and just
- 13:13Speaker 8: be the better team come out and not have to
- 13:15Speaker 8: prepare for him as hard as they do any other team,
- 13:18Speaker 8: like or even harder. Minnesota has beat them five straight
- 13:23Speaker 8: times coming in, Like, I just don't.
- 13:25Speaker 7: I do not see.
- 13:28Speaker 8: Where are these people where all's comments came from. What
- 13:31Speaker 8: did Luke Lindemeer say something like we were gonna come
- 13:34Speaker 8: out and uh.
- 13:35Speaker 7: What did he say?
- 13:37Speaker 4: Put on a show?
- 13:38Speaker 7: Yeah, put on a show? Like what what does that?
- 13:42Speaker 5: Yeah?
- 13:43Speaker 7: And what what did they expect Minnesota's gonna do? This
- 13:47Speaker 7: is what they always do against Nebraska. They always play hard,
- 13:50Speaker 7: beat up football, Like, but that's not a team you're
- 13:54Speaker 7: gonna put on a show against. You want to you
- 13:57Speaker 7: want to be more physical of them. So I just don't.
- 13:59Speaker 7: I don't get what their game playing going into the
- 14:01Speaker 7: game was. And it's sound like no one is focused
- 14:04Speaker 7: going into this game, and I just don't get it.
- 14:07Speaker 5: That's the question that got asked to the coaches and
- 14:14Speaker 5: players on Tuesday from rules comments was Rule calling them out,
- 14:18Speaker 5: saying there were certain assistant coaches and players that in
- 14:23Speaker 5: a roundabout way overlooked or weren't getting prepared as well.
- 14:27Speaker 4: For Minnesota and weren't scared of him or whatever. I I, yeah,
- 14:31Speaker 4: I don't know.
- 14:32Speaker 7: I don't know.
- 14:33Speaker 4: I had no idea of why or how. But again
- 14:36Speaker 4: I think that that falls.
- 14:37Speaker 5: All of that to me falls on culture, which then
- 14:42Speaker 5: goes back to the head coach, and that's what rule does.
- 14:44Speaker 5: Like what we're saying is kind of funny because he
- 14:47Speaker 5: talks so much, he hits on all the areas he's
- 14:50Speaker 5: not he's taking responsibility, but he also is calling people out.
- 14:54Speaker 4: He is not blaming his assistant coaches because they didn't
- 14:59Speaker 4: take responsible for it, but he is calling them out
- 15:02Speaker 4: for everything that he saw.
- 15:06Speaker 5: And then in turn on Tuesday, they all get asked
- 15:09Speaker 5: about it, and I don't I don't think anybody has
- 15:13Speaker 5: an answer for why. Besides it's just not acceptable. Like
- 15:17Speaker 5: and that's what hurts probably is it doesn't make sense.
- 15:22Speaker 5: There's zero part of it that as a competitor of
- 15:25Speaker 5: anything in life, that does.
- 15:28Speaker 4: Not add up. And that's what happened.
- 15:32Speaker 5: So on the on the on the flip side of that,
- 15:37Speaker 5: this week, you would think that we would be ultramotivated
- 15:44Speaker 5: and prepared and focused and everything to come out and
- 15:49Speaker 5: beat Minister or beat Northwestern because of what happened last
- 15:54Speaker 5: week and some and and the five and one ranked
- 16:00Speaker 5: top twenty five, I throw in the rural Penn State drama.
- 16:06Speaker 4: I don't know, is that all that puts you on
- 16:10Speaker 4: a pedestal a little bit?
- 16:11Speaker 5: I guess is what they're saying, which is wrong given
- 16:15Speaker 5: your playing Minnesota and that's not good that that happened.
- 16:21Speaker 8: Is that where because I've been trying to think all
- 16:23Speaker 8: week where all this confidence came from?
- 16:24Speaker 7: Is that? What is that? What they're just ranked like that?
- 16:28Speaker 8: The rest that they are that good because that the
- 16:32Speaker 8: twenty five rank came from, I don't I don't get it.
- 16:36Speaker 5: Not to mention rule use the word entitlement in there,
- 16:38Speaker 5: which I think that goes along in this conversation as well.
- 16:43Speaker 5: And I think it's also a valid true point of
- 16:48Speaker 5: when something good goes along with your name, you feel
- 16:54Speaker 5: a little sense of how we're pretty good. But that's
- 16:57Speaker 5: on the coaches to control roll that narrative and make
- 17:04Speaker 5: sure that your team and they're college kids, right, they're
- 17:07Speaker 5: college kids.
- 17:08Speaker 6: So.
- 17:10Speaker 5: It's not super easy to do, but you got to
- 17:14Speaker 5: find a way to brain that in because I do
- 17:17Speaker 5: think that came with it.
- 17:18Speaker 7: I just.
- 17:20Speaker 5: I think that's a little bit part of it, and
- 17:22Speaker 5: it's unfortunate, but that happens not just in Nebraska. It
- 17:26Speaker 5: happens a lot of places. That's why people in betting
- 17:30Speaker 5: like to fade teams that are maybe not as good
- 17:35Speaker 5: as what they think they are, because they think they're
- 17:37Speaker 5: going to lay an egg sometime.
- 17:38Speaker 4: And that's exactly what happened.
- 17:41Speaker 6: I'm sure a lot of people made a lot of
- 17:43Speaker 6: money off Nebraska last week.
- 17:45Speaker 4: There actually were.
- 17:47Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean a lot of a lot of the
- 17:49Speaker 5: podcasts out there that I listened to, a lot of
- 17:52Speaker 5: them had Minnesota as their favorite bet.
- 17:55Speaker 4: So to that point, should we be surprised, Maybe not.
- 18:01Speaker 5: I mean from a national perspectives, I mean kind of
- 18:04Speaker 5: saw this coming. They're like, what is the spread doing
- 18:06Speaker 5: at seven and a half? Is as way too high
- 18:09Speaker 5: as a stupid and of course Minnesota took it to
- 18:13Speaker 5: another level and one outright, well.
- 18:17Speaker 6: What are they saying this week with a spread of
- 18:19Speaker 6: I don't know what it is right now anymore.
- 18:22Speaker 7: It's the same, it's about the same thing against Yeah.
- 18:26Speaker 4: Well a couple of first couple of things is that
- 18:28Speaker 4: the flip side of that is teams that come off
- 18:30Speaker 4: of shell shock losses.
- 18:34Speaker 5: Usually are a lot more focused and respond better. And
- 18:38Speaker 5: you know what, in the Nebraska we've actually shown.
- 18:43Speaker 4: Especially under rule.
- 18:44Speaker 5: I'm just thinking like the Indiana game last year where
- 18:48Speaker 5: we came off the next week against Ohio State and
- 18:50Speaker 5: looked very, very good. It's not our best season against
- 18:54Speaker 5: you know, won the national title. So I think that
- 18:58Speaker 5: people think we're gonna play well well, and I hope
- 19:01Speaker 5: the rights, I hope that's okay. If they do that,
- 19:04Speaker 5: that shows you it was more of a mindset problem
- 19:06Speaker 5: and not a entire like program problem, like talent problem,
- 19:13Speaker 5: because part of it could just be we just don't
- 19:17Speaker 5: have the players yet. And I felt like we got
- 19:19Speaker 5: we're getting past that stage a little bit where people
- 19:23Speaker 5: think we do now. When I say players, I'm talking
- 19:25Speaker 5: about skill offensive line, defensive line. That might still be
- 19:33Speaker 5: a concern if we don't have the players, but at
- 19:35Speaker 5: the same time, that's where all a lot of the
- 19:38Speaker 5: contact is happening, and the physicality and the toughness is
- 19:42Speaker 5: in the trenches.
- 19:43Speaker 4: So you hope that we can maybe improve on what's
- 19:47Speaker 4: going on there. And it doesn't look like it did
- 19:49Speaker 4: against Minnesota.
- 19:56Speaker 6: I think that's all right. I mean, it was like
- 20:00Speaker 6: coach talk. I agree with them taking their responsibility, but
- 20:06Speaker 6: everyone knows that it's not just their responsibility, like I said,
- 20:10Speaker 6: with the players only meeting, and they know the coaches
- 20:13Speaker 6: have to say that because that's.
- 20:14Speaker 4: What they have to say. Yeah, they have to say it.
- 20:20Speaker 6: But I don't know if anyone pressed hard enough on
- 20:25Speaker 6: the coaches as far as like, well, then why did
- 20:27Speaker 6: your game plans suck? Like Dana, why did you score
- 20:30Speaker 6: a touchdown? John Butler? Why did you give up another
- 20:36Speaker 6: another week of twenty plus points in the Big Ten?
- 20:40Speaker 7: Yeah?
- 20:40Speaker 5: See, I wish I wish media would just press harder
- 20:43Speaker 5: on I like, not that, not that we deserve or
- 20:48Speaker 5: need need an answer, but yeah, like that's on me. Okay,
- 20:51Speaker 5: well then what are you doing to cheat? And there
- 20:53Speaker 5: were a couple I guess tougher questions on like, for example,
- 20:58Speaker 5: the tackling, Yeah, are things going to get changed?
- 21:01Speaker 4: You know? On the tack tackling was not very good?
- 21:04Speaker 5: And rule mentioned we do a tackling circuit every day, right, Okay.
- 21:11Speaker 4: Well then what that question is?
- 21:16Speaker 7: What is it?
- 21:16Speaker 5: What is in rules, head coaching experience, and the players
- 21:20Speaker 5: in the program? What is a tackling circuit? Like what
- 21:23Speaker 5: does what does that consist of? And is it actually
- 21:28Speaker 5: like helping or hurting? Right what we're doing in games?
- 21:32Speaker 4: We don't. We're not gonna we're never gonna know that
- 21:34Speaker 4: from practice.
- 21:34Speaker 5: But like that makes you question, Okay, well what is
- 21:37Speaker 5: it a physical Is it a is it a blood
- 21:39Speaker 5: bath tackling circuit where you're emphasizing and stressing complete physicality
- 21:48Speaker 5: and and all that stuff.
- 21:50Speaker 4: We don't know, but they say they're doing it.
- 21:52Speaker 9: So what does that mean?
- 21:54Speaker 7: I don't know.
- 21:58Speaker 8: It's I guess it the good bad part of it
- 22:04Speaker 8: is coming out of loss like this, it wasn't just
- 22:06Speaker 8: one side of the ball that was bad, it was
- 22:08Speaker 8: it was both sides like it was. It was horrorball
- 22:10Speaker 8: around And and I told this earlier or yesterday, I
- 22:14Speaker 8: told you this, even coming out of it just seemed
- 22:17Speaker 8: like Nebraska wasn't fired up at all, Like Minnesota is
- 22:19Speaker 8: the more fired up team coming out of the game.
- 22:21Speaker 8: Are coming into the game, And I I just again
- 22:27Speaker 8: come back to this point, what what are you preparing
- 22:31Speaker 8: for all week besides Minnesota? Like and I don't think
- 22:36Speaker 8: Minnesota was that hard of a team to prepare for either,
- 22:38Speaker 8: Like they're going to do the same thing they do
- 22:40Speaker 8: every year against Nebraska, try to run the ball down
- 22:43Speaker 8: their throats and throw these short passes.
- 22:45Speaker 7: I just don't know, Dak, I will.
- 22:47Speaker 5: I'm on a cavea at that because you did going
- 22:50Speaker 5: into Minnesota week last week, you didn't think Minnesota was
- 22:52Speaker 5: the same on Minnesota team. You told me they throw
- 22:55Speaker 5: it more, they're different, blah blah blah. Like that perception
- 23:00Speaker 5: was out there heading into the week that they weren't
- 23:02Speaker 5: the same team because of whatever reason.
- 23:06Speaker 4: So I completely agree they were and they had no
- 23:13Speaker 4: reason not to be. But what you told me last week,
- 23:17Speaker 4: that's probably in the back of their minds a little bit,
- 23:19Speaker 4: and that's what we're on the coach's minds, and that
- 23:21Speaker 4: that unfortunately that shouldn't happen. But that I'm sure was
- 23:26Speaker 4: there true.
- 23:28Speaker 8: Yeah, maybe Nebraska prayed for Minnesota throw the ball more
- 23:31Speaker 8: like and Nebraska came out, or Minnesota came out and
- 23:37Speaker 8: Kim flipped the game plan and ran the ball.
- 23:39Speaker 7: So we just.
- 23:42Speaker 8: Which was the brasca as pay for every team now
- 23:45Speaker 8: just to try to run the ball like that's what
- 23:47Speaker 8: every team is going to do against Nebraska. I don't
- 23:51Speaker 8: think teams are going to come out I mean, it's
- 23:53Speaker 8: proven by this point you can run on Nebraska very
- 23:56Speaker 8: very easily. And I just don't see teams trying to
- 24:01Speaker 8: even usc these teams that do love to throw them
- 24:03Speaker 8: off forty fifty times a game. I just don't see
- 24:06Speaker 8: teams trying that against Nebraska.
- 24:09Speaker 4: So John Butler said that that's afect.
- 24:13Speaker 5: Example of that was that long touchdown round that Darius
- 24:16Speaker 5: Taylor had was basically the exact same play that Justice
- 24:23Speaker 5: Haynes from Michigan scored on, and he made the comment
- 24:28Speaker 5: that dies every every offensive coordinator does that. You watch
- 24:31Speaker 5: the big plays, explosive plays from previous games, and you
- 24:37Speaker 5: even if you don't have that play in you're going
- 24:39Speaker 5: to add it to your playbook or variation of it
- 24:41Speaker 5: because it worked. And basically was saying we did not
- 24:46Speaker 5: have any counter or change from that Michigan game to
- 24:50Speaker 5: stop that play, and.
- 24:51Speaker 4: It literally looked like a carbon copy of that play.
- 24:54Speaker 9: It was.
- 24:55Speaker 4: It was a hat to hat.
- 24:58Speaker 5: One guy took a bad angle in the secondary and
- 25:01Speaker 5: see you. So you're right as you're watching film and.
- 25:09Speaker 4: Teams are gonna have their their there the blueprints out
- 25:12Speaker 4: right now on how to beat Nebraska or move the
- 25:16Speaker 4: ball against Nebraska or defend us like it's out there
- 25:23Speaker 4: and teams are gonna keep doing it until we can
- 25:25Speaker 4: prove we can stop it. Now, we've won a couple
- 25:29Speaker 4: of those games that they've done that stuff.
- 25:30Speaker 5: But Minnesota right was watching, They're like, oh my god,
- 25:32Speaker 5: Michigan State's had one sack all year and they just
- 25:36Speaker 5: had five. Look what they did, and they took it
- 25:39Speaker 5: to another level because Minnesota had better players.
- 25:41Speaker 4: Probably the Michigan State did and end with nine.
- 25:46Speaker 10: Yeah, and and and rule said that Rila avoided five sacks,
- 25:55Speaker 10: so it could have been double easily.
- 25:58Speaker 4: I completely agree. I yeah he did.
- 26:00Speaker 5: He did elude some things back in the pocket, like yeah.
- 26:05Speaker 6: Yeah, even you know just the pass where he's flicking
- 26:09Speaker 6: it up over in Isaiah that.
- 26:12Speaker 7: I mean that be the sack? Is it?
- 26:20Speaker 8: God? I mean, well, we'll dive in Northwestern. But I
- 26:24Speaker 8: they're in Northwestern. Okay. So here's the game plan for Northwestern.
- 26:32Speaker 7: And if they don't do this, they're stupid. Throw on
- 26:35Speaker 7: the Minnesota clips. You don't have to change any game plan.
- 26:39Speaker 8: I'll do the same exact thing Minnesota did, many the
- 26:42Speaker 8: same plays. Even what I would do right now against
- 26:46Speaker 8: Nebraska is you have to prove you can stop that.
- 26:51Speaker 8: Until you can't. We're just do the same thing over
- 26:53Speaker 8: and over.
- 26:55Speaker 4: You'd be a great head coach.
- 26:57Speaker 8: That's that's throwing the clip, same exact thing, like, prove
- 27:03Speaker 8: you can stop it.
- 27:06Speaker 4: Well, specifically, are you referring to what what? What points?
- 27:10Speaker 8: Run the ball, run the ball down their throats, dink
- 27:13Speaker 8: and dunk short passes.
- 27:14Speaker 7: That's it. That's all you gotta do, because Nebraska did not.
- 27:19Speaker 6: What we're just trying to make it so that we
- 27:22Speaker 6: wait for us to miss the tackle.
- 27:24Speaker 7: Yeah, make the mistakes like.
- 27:27Speaker 8: It's and then on the defensive side to do things
- 27:32Speaker 8: act that send the house every time. It's it's it's
- 27:36Speaker 8: pretty easy to figure out what Nebraska can't do right now,
- 27:40Speaker 8: and it's can't stop the run. Short passes work against them,
- 27:45Speaker 8: and on the defensive or offensive defense side from Northwestern
- 27:49Speaker 8: send the house because they can't block anybody.
- 27:53Speaker 6: Well, in case you were undering, Northwestern is like third
- 27:55Speaker 6: in the country in time of possession, So they definitely
- 27:59Speaker 6: run the ball and dog and dunk passes.
- 28:01Speaker 7: They loved r on the ball.
- 28:07Speaker 5: Yeah, it's going to be a battlet that's specifically target
- 28:11Speaker 5: here instead of covering the whole game. I mean, I think,
- 28:16Speaker 5: to me, let's start on the offensive line for us.
- 28:19Speaker 7: And and.
- 28:23Speaker 5: Interesting question or conversation that I had this week with
- 28:27Speaker 5: some people, it's like, can you how how can can
- 28:32Speaker 5: you can you get your offensive line to be better?
- 28:34Speaker 4: Like or to they just suck?
- 28:36Speaker 7: Right?
- 28:36Speaker 5: Like do they just suck this year and we gotta
- 28:39Speaker 5: deal with it? Or can or can we improve our
- 28:43Speaker 5: offensive line this year? Number one, We're not making many
- 28:48Speaker 5: personnel changes. I don't think we got it. The same
- 28:53Speaker 5: guys are coming in to start next week and and
- 28:55Speaker 5: and that that's what we have. And on top of that,
- 28:59Speaker 5: Rocko Spindler going to try to play through an injury
- 29:03Speaker 5: where it's like it's a pain tolerance thing and we'll
- 29:08Speaker 5: see how that goes. But Dana said it, we need
- 29:13Speaker 5: him out there. He's one of our better offensive line
- 29:16Speaker 5: man and he has been so personnel wise, No, there's
- 29:20Speaker 5: probably not any changes we're going to see.
- 29:22Speaker 4: I don't think so.
- 29:25Speaker 5: I think a lot of it is communication and technique.
- 29:33Speaker 4: The whole lot Riola.
- 29:37Speaker 5: Offensive line coach conversation and how you address that I
- 29:42Speaker 5: think is a real thing. But it's the elephant in
- 29:45Speaker 5: the room because he's Dylan his uncle and how touching
- 29:48Speaker 5: you like that is not a good dynamic for Nebraska
- 29:51Speaker 5: to have right now.
- 29:53Speaker 4: So how does the offensive line get better?
- 29:55Speaker 5: Well, to me, you just you have to there's technique
- 29:59Speaker 5: with but I think a lot of it still comes
- 30:02Speaker 5: down to getting a little bit tougher, a little bit
- 30:04Speaker 5: more physical. No, we're not going to make any of
- 30:07Speaker 5: these guys in the starting line NFL type offensive lineman.
- 30:10Speaker 4: We can't do that in the last five games.
- 30:13Speaker 5: But we can take everything that they currently do and
- 30:16Speaker 5: have and make them a little bit better and try
- 30:20Speaker 5: to incrementally improve it.
- 30:22Speaker 4: But it's still going to probably be a weakness this week.
- 30:26Speaker 8: I say, before jeez, but before I forget what I
- 30:30Speaker 8: was gonna say, Ryola, here's and I'm talking about dealing
- 30:37Speaker 8: the here and this is not help help the offensive
- 30:40Speaker 8: line in all. I think because Minnesota blitz on fifty
- 30:43Speaker 8: percent of their place around fifty with him not being
- 30:46Speaker 8: able to move, it's so much easier to send the
- 30:49Speaker 8: blitz because you know he's not gon't take off and run,
- 30:51Speaker 8: so you just send a house.
- 30:52Speaker 7: It's against these quarterbacks can't move, So.
- 30:55Speaker 8: How you counter You've got to counter that with short passes,
- 30:58Speaker 8: get the ball out quick like sod. It just seems
- 31:00Speaker 8: like their plays are taking way too long.
- 31:02Speaker 7: To set up.
- 31:03Speaker 8: You've gotta because because now you know, teams are just
- 31:06Speaker 8: gonna send the house because it's proven by this point
- 31:08Speaker 8: he can't move. I don't give a rats ass about
- 31:12Speaker 8: what about all his weight loss and all this so
- 31:14Speaker 8: I can move this year? Yeah, well you can't rile
- 31:16Speaker 8: like lose more weight, Tubby.
- 31:19Speaker 4: We got to bring back out the annual Dylan rayl
- 31:22Speaker 4: Wait check, do we gotta go back to that?
- 31:26Speaker 7: I hopefully he.
- 31:26Speaker 8: Wasn't listening there, but yeah, I just called him Tubby. Yeah,
- 31:30Speaker 8: he's lose some weight.
- 31:36Speaker 6: I mean, Northwestern has eleven sacks on the year through
- 31:43Speaker 6: seven games, and they have not played I mean, you
- 31:48Speaker 6: know Dek mentioned they haven't played great games by any means. Tulane,
- 31:52Speaker 6: Western Illinois, Oregon's good U c l A when they
- 31:55Speaker 6: were rowing four, Monroe, Penn State Perdue. Not a lot
- 32:04Speaker 6: of the lead offensive lines in there, and they only
- 32:06Speaker 6: have a lot of sacks. So hopefully this isn't like
- 32:12Speaker 6: Minnesota where they also didn't have the many sacks. And
- 32:14Speaker 6: then just and we're going to game plan for more blitzes.
- 32:18Speaker 6: I just think that that this week they just they're
- 32:21Speaker 6: probably gonna run more you know, personnel sets where the
- 32:27Speaker 6: tight end's really just an additional lineman blocking out there
- 32:30Speaker 6: because they look gunimires thick. But it's like we're just
- 32:35Speaker 6: gonna keep him up. We're not We're not gonna get
- 32:38Speaker 6: beat again.
- 32:40Speaker 7: I mean, it's it's gonna suck if you get to
- 32:42Speaker 7: this because Lennon ber is a great pass catcher, but
- 32:46Speaker 7: the point where you have to dump the tight end
- 32:48Speaker 7: passing game and have him as a blocker.
- 32:51Speaker 4: A little bit. I mean, I think there's a lot
- 32:53Speaker 4: of I think I mean this is speaking from a.
- 32:58Speaker 5: Offensive coordinator on a video game in myself, so taking
- 33:03Speaker 5: everyone it's worth, but there's like stuff you can do
- 33:06Speaker 5: with your tight ends and running backs where they're you know,
- 33:08Speaker 5: they're they're blocking if they need to, and you for
- 33:12Speaker 5: account a couple of counts and then at once they realize.
- 33:15Speaker 4: No blitz and you release them whatever route that is.
- 33:19Speaker 5: So I think there's stuff like that you can do
- 33:21Speaker 5: with with your tight end, specifically to help counter teams
- 33:28Speaker 5: that are going to be bringing the house every time.
- 33:30Speaker 4: And I think just in general, Dana to blame as
- 33:36Speaker 4: well on play calling, and.
- 33:39Speaker 5: They're right, Sacks aren't falling anywhere completely on one position
- 33:44Speaker 5: or one person.
- 33:44Speaker 4: It's everything. And I think if you wanted to.
- 33:49Speaker 5: Put percentages on it, your off pensive lines definitely the
- 33:52Speaker 5: highest percentage, don't get me wrong. And some people would
- 33:57Speaker 5: move that bard differently to Dylan or whatever for not
- 34:02Speaker 5: getting rid of it, or to play calling, because it's
- 34:05Speaker 5: not there's no short passes, it's not set up to
- 34:08Speaker 5: counter blitzes, so you can that's that's your your opinion,
- 34:12Speaker 5: but it is.
- 34:12Speaker 4: It's a combination of a lot of things, and so
- 34:17Speaker 4: I do think this week it hopefully, hopefully.
- 34:21Speaker 7: It will be better.
- 34:22Speaker 5: And like you mentioned Austin, they haven't played too many
- 34:27Speaker 5: like elite offensive lines are good offensive line, so you
- 34:30Speaker 5: wouldn't think it's too much different. But the same guy,
- 34:33Speaker 5: most of you got to coach coaches. We are at
- 34:37Speaker 5: improving and steaming around some of the things. As you're right, Dack,
- 34:41Speaker 5: they're going to try to do the same thing because
- 34:44Speaker 5: it worked last two or three games.
- 34:49Speaker 4: One other specific thing on the offense here that.
- 34:55Speaker 5: Was brought up in an address specifically with Dana was
- 34:59Speaker 5: the play calling and play callin has been something that.
- 35:02Speaker 4: Actually we have not.
- 35:05Speaker 5: Really critiqued a lot, especially since Dana has been here,
- 35:09Speaker 5: but even since Rule's been here, Frost, it was obviously
- 35:13Speaker 5: a pig conversation in previous coaches as well, and it
- 35:17Speaker 5: was asked, you know, I think it was the first driver,
- 35:19Speaker 5: one of the earlier drives calling three past plays, and
- 35:23Speaker 5: Dana kind of snapped back at it and said, well.
- 35:25Speaker 4: No, it's two of those are our pios and here's read.
- 35:30Speaker 5: And he actually called out in Isaiah Hunter on one
- 35:32Speaker 5: of them pretty pretty boldly and just said he didn't
- 35:37Speaker 5: get the correct.
- 35:40Speaker 4: Read or call, so that one's on him.
- 35:45Speaker 5: Here's And this this led me to think a lot
- 35:48Speaker 5: because Dana's also made comics before about Dylan's in charge
- 35:53Speaker 5: of it's his job to read the entire defense like
- 35:57Speaker 5: an NFL quarterback. He's I came how many weeks ago
- 36:00Speaker 5: he said that, And he said a lot of coaches
- 36:05Speaker 5: are talking to their quarterback all the way up to
- 36:08Speaker 5: that fifteen second might cut that they do in the helmet,
- 36:13Speaker 5: and he's like, we don't, we don't need to do
- 36:16Speaker 5: that with Dylan because he's whatever reading the defense itself.
- 36:22Speaker 5: And then on so that that's example A, and an
- 36:25Speaker 5: example B is RPOs and what that entails for a
- 36:34Speaker 5: quarterback who's still a sophomore and making a read based
- 36:40Speaker 5: on what the defense is showing him and giving him
- 36:41Speaker 5: the power then to either change the play or make
- 36:46Speaker 5: that decision in an RPO. And my question I guess was,
- 36:49Speaker 5: are we giving Dylan too much credit? Too much control?
- 36:56Speaker 5: When I say we it is data of the offense
- 36:59Speaker 5: right now, given how it's performed over the last whatever
- 37:06Speaker 5: eight nine games since Dana's been.
- 37:07Speaker 6: Here, I'm gonna say no, primarily because our offense is
- 37:16Speaker 6: actually done pretty well. Last week goes terrible. Our red
- 37:19Speaker 6: zone offense is terrible. I think it's that's really what
- 37:23Speaker 6: our issue is.
- 37:25Speaker 4: So what what would you say, Austin and.
- 37:29Speaker 5: Alost, even take out Minnesota if you were to say
- 37:32Speaker 5: our offense is a blank out of ten since Dana's
- 37:36Speaker 5: been here, or maybe just say this year, even this year?
- 37:39Speaker 5: What what what would you say it is?
- 37:43Speaker 6: I would probably say seven out of ten?
- 37:47Speaker 7: Dak Oh, I'd say six.
- 37:53Speaker 5: That the most disgusted look when Austin said seven of
- 37:57Speaker 5: like what are you doing?
- 37:58Speaker 4: And then he just goes one blow.
- 38:00Speaker 6: I scored thirty four, thirty eight, twenty seven, fifty nine,
- 38:03Speaker 6: sixty eight, twenty this year. I last year, we didn't
- 38:09Speaker 6: even crack twenty more than like twice.
- 38:11Speaker 4: That is so bad that was with Yeah, well yeah
- 38:16Speaker 4: at the end.
- 38:17Speaker 7: Yeah, I'm just thinking back to how bad. Yeah it
- 38:20Speaker 7: was before him and.
- 38:23Speaker 6: Minneapolis was bad. Minnesota game was terrible.
- 38:26Speaker 7: Yeah, I was off, don't get me wrong.
- 38:27Speaker 6: But I'd say overall, I mean, of the six games
- 38:31Speaker 6: prior to that, it's like, well, it's actually pretty respectable.
- 38:36Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 38:36Speaker 6: I mean I.
- 38:39Speaker 4: I would just I say opens very average right now
- 38:41Speaker 4: in my mind. I mean, I think.
- 38:45Speaker 7: They didn't.
- 38:46Speaker 4: It's average to me.
- 38:47Speaker 5: I mean, putting up points is one thing, but I
- 38:49Speaker 5: think there's a level of Again, I'm throwing those two
- 38:56Speaker 5: games out completely. I just I just throw those outs.
- 38:58Speaker 5: I think you could do anything you want to. You
- 39:00Speaker 5: wanted to win that game thirty four, nothing you could have.
- 39:02Speaker 5: I just I throw those out.
- 39:04Speaker 4: But I just I think that Dana is a solid
- 39:10Speaker 4: opensive coordinator.
- 39:14Speaker 5: My concern is that are we putting too I think
- 39:19Speaker 5: I think we're putting too much trust into Dylan in
- 39:23Speaker 5: making decisions right now. And I get that adds an
- 39:28Speaker 5: element to your offense that that helps, like that can
- 39:34Speaker 5: make it tougher to guard a little more complex and everything.
- 39:39Speaker 5: But I think that if we I'm not going to
- 39:41Speaker 5: say completely simplify and go back to step one, but
- 39:46Speaker 5: maybe take a little bit of that.
- 39:49Speaker 4: At an element of thinking of adjusting and make it
- 39:55Speaker 4: easier to.
- 39:58Speaker 5: Manage as a quarterback, I think that I think that
- 40:01Speaker 5: will help a lot. I think Dan even mentioned Dylan's
- 40:04Speaker 5: thought process when he's getting blitzed right like, there's a
- 40:07Speaker 5: there's a lot going through your especially on the road
- 40:10Speaker 5: in a hostile environment like Minnesota was a lot more
- 40:13Speaker 5: than Maryland.
- 40:14Speaker 4: There's a lot going on.
- 40:15Speaker 5: And if you can help control that a little bit
- 40:17Speaker 5: as a coach right now after that performance, I would
- 40:22Speaker 5: I would do that. Now being at home is gonna
- 40:24Speaker 5: help a lot because you're you're not gonna have the
- 40:27Speaker 5: extra stuff. And when a lot of it does sound
- 40:29Speaker 5: like it's communication issues like that, but that's part of
- 40:33Speaker 5: playing on the road that everybody does it and it's gonna.
- 40:35Speaker 4: Happen again twice.
- 40:38Speaker 9: And and maybe U C.
- 40:40Speaker 4: L A might not be as hostile but Penn Station
- 40:43Speaker 4: as I will be.
- 40:44Speaker 7: Maybe now you throw, do you throw some of the
- 40:51Speaker 7: offensive line struggles. I'm also onto Dana too though, like
- 40:56Speaker 7: how he hasn't figured out how to counter that problem.
- 41:00Speaker 4: I think what happened is last week.
- 41:04Speaker 5: Is we weren't forced to necessarily overhaul or change some
- 41:10Speaker 5: of our schematics because we won the game. And that's
- 41:13Speaker 5: that's to me, what has stung the most is that
- 41:16Speaker 5: because we won Maryland in Michigan State, it's like our
- 41:20Speaker 5: coaching staff and this is kind of what Rules talking
- 41:23Speaker 5: about overshadowed, overlooked. We have not corrected necessarily to the
- 41:29Speaker 5: extent that we would have if we would have lost
- 41:30Speaker 5: those games. And I think good coaching staffs, even in wins,
- 41:36Speaker 5: can put on the exact same layer and level of
- 41:40Speaker 5: preparation of adjustments of corrections in a win, a close
- 41:46Speaker 5: win versus a close loss. That's what great and elite
- 41:49Speaker 5: coaching staffs do, is they they like, for example, if
- 41:53Speaker 5: you Signetti has a great press conference out there after
- 41:56Speaker 5: they beat organ and it was but he basically it
- 42:02Speaker 5: was like they didn't even win the game because of
- 42:04Speaker 5: the things that they.
- 42:05Speaker 7: Need to work on.
- 42:06Speaker 5: And that's I think what Rules calling out specifically, and
- 42:12Speaker 5: Dana I think is a I think is a victim
- 42:14Speaker 5: of that a little bit, and we clearly did not
- 42:17Speaker 5: have an answer in a counter this week, this last week.
- 42:20Speaker 5: Hopefully this week we do because we lost. But I
- 42:23Speaker 5: wish it wouldn't take a loss like that for it happened,
- 42:25Speaker 5: but it did, and that's where we're at.
- 42:29Speaker 6: I think we're spent a lot of time. I think
- 42:32Speaker 6: we've spent a lot of time on the offense, and
- 42:33Speaker 6: it feels like the defense is the problem. I know
- 42:36Speaker 6: we gave up nine sacks, but I.
- 42:39Speaker 4: Really feel like that.
- 42:40Speaker 6: I get in our offense perform poorly, but I think
- 42:43Speaker 6: the season lone, you know, black Sheep that no one
- 42:48Speaker 6: really it's that I just don't think our defense is
- 42:50Speaker 6: very good.
- 42:52Speaker 7: Are you?
- 42:53Speaker 8: Are you really saying the whole defense are just defensive
- 42:56Speaker 8: line the whole defense.
- 42:58Speaker 6: I mean, our secondary is good. I'm not gonna say
- 43:00Speaker 6: seconds bad. That'd be dumb because we're still number one
- 43:02Speaker 6: in past defense. But I mean they the secondary plays
- 43:05Speaker 6: and run defense too. There's plenty of Rex gout three
- 43:08Speaker 6: missed tackles in the backfield. Not to call it Rex
- 43:11Speaker 6: because Rex played, you know, he's decent, but those are
- 43:14Speaker 6: the ones that are coming to mind where it's like, hey,
- 43:16Speaker 6: we hadn't behind. You know, we had him behind the
- 43:18Speaker 6: line of scrimmage, but we just didn't finish the tackle.
- 43:21Speaker 6: We're ninety we give up ninety three red zone trips
- 43:25Speaker 6: two opponents. We do not stop them when they get
- 43:28Speaker 6: down to our side of the field.
- 43:30Speaker 4: Red zones not not. I mean both sides have been bad.
- 43:33Speaker 7: Yeah, And.
- 43:36Speaker 4: I think the concern going end of the year was
- 43:38Speaker 4: our defense to take a big step.
- 43:40Speaker 5: Back after losing Tony White, who I still think is
- 43:43Speaker 5: a pretty damn good defensive coordinator. Take out of everything
- 43:46Speaker 5: that's going on at Florida State and.
- 43:49Speaker 4: John Butler, I don't know, I just I don't know
- 43:54Speaker 4: how to get a read on the guy.
- 43:57Speaker 7: I feel like.
- 44:00Speaker 5: From conversations leading into the year, like this defense is
- 44:03Speaker 5: going to be a very high risk, high reward type
- 44:05Speaker 5: of defense. We definitely aren't getting much of the reward
- 44:11Speaker 5: right now. And awesome to your point.
- 44:16Speaker 9: Like we just seem dull, and yeah, yeah we are.
- 44:26Speaker 5: He mentioned he mentioned his aggressive play calling and then
- 44:32Speaker 5: for he took blame. He said, our play calling wasn't aggressive,
- 44:35Speaker 5: isn't enough. And I guess again you go back to
- 44:39Speaker 5: the why, like what what happened? And you know, the
- 44:41Speaker 5: one run really early on really just stunted. Your play
- 44:48Speaker 5: calling that bad. I guess I don't I don't know.
- 44:51Speaker 5: I don't know how good of a coach he is
- 44:53Speaker 5: as a defensive coordinator.
- 44:54Speaker 7: I think I don't know.
- 44:57Speaker 4: I mean what what what would you rate him as
- 44:59Speaker 4: a coach right now?
- 44:59Speaker 6: I and.
- 45:02Speaker 4: Our defense has been.
- 45:05Speaker 7: Four or five? Like I yeah, I was gonna say four.
- 45:09Speaker 6: Yeah, I guess we've given up. I mean again, you
- 45:15Speaker 6: throw out those two games we have seventeen thirty twenty seven,
- 45:20Speaker 6: thirty one, twenty four and the fact that when they
- 45:25Speaker 6: when our opponents get into the red zone, they score
- 45:27Speaker 6: ninety three percent of the times. And that's when you're
- 45:29Speaker 6: when you're that's when you're secondary was really good. It
- 45:32Speaker 6: can play a little bit tighter because the field's shorter.
- 45:36Speaker 6: You know, it's supposed to get not easier, but when
- 45:38Speaker 6: the fields shorter, that's when it's supposed to help when
- 45:41Speaker 6: you have a good secondary, because now you can really
- 45:42Speaker 6: clamp down on them and put pressure on the quarterback.
- 45:47Speaker 6: We were like the worst team, Like we're one hundred
- 45:49Speaker 6: and twenty second in the country in red zone defense.
- 45:53Speaker 6: That's atrocious, and we don't stop them yes, our past
- 45:58Speaker 6: defense is great, but if the run the ball so
- 46:00Speaker 6: they don't have to pass it, what's the matter. So
- 46:03Speaker 6: you just they need to get a little more created.
- 46:05Speaker 6: You're right, they need to more creative with how they're
- 46:06Speaker 6: using their you know, their their secondary players. If our
- 46:10Speaker 6: offensive line isn't good enough to do it by themselves.
- 46:13Speaker 8: It's it's kind of like I said, using Linda Myers
- 46:16Speaker 8: a blocker, do you is it time to start sending
- 46:19Speaker 8: linebackers and uh other guys down on the line now, Which.
- 46:26Speaker 6: If you're worried about those short passes though, that's not
- 46:29Speaker 6: what you want to do because that's yeah, the players
- 46:31Speaker 6: are going to be open.
- 46:33Speaker 7: That's another thing with with Dane and I adjusting to
- 46:35Speaker 7: what Minnesota's doing on defense.
- 46:37Speaker 8: The butler did not adjust at all like that. That
- 46:40Speaker 8: was even worse, just at all what Minnesota's doing offense.
- 46:42Speaker 8: He's like, I'm skilled with that happened.
- 46:44Speaker 5: But what's super strange, and this is we've talked with
- 46:48Speaker 5: the three three five throughout since we've ran it it.
- 46:53Speaker 5: What was weird is early on and this was the
- 46:56Speaker 5: game plan, this was the scout going into the game.
- 47:00Speaker 5: We had three down linemen consistently. And there's a lot
- 47:04Speaker 5: of times we had, you know, three or five linebackers
- 47:06Speaker 5: in the game, but from an initial contact and push,
- 47:14Speaker 5: it was like we were hoping our three down lineman
- 47:16Speaker 5: could plug and then the five could fill. That didn't
- 47:20Speaker 5: wasn't working, and so then we moved the guys down
- 47:23Speaker 5: and that's when the short passes started happening. So I agree,
- 47:27Speaker 5: everything just seems slow in schematics and adjustments and and
- 47:31Speaker 5: what Butler does. Again, I don't don't know anything about
- 47:37Speaker 5: coaching a defense in football, but like you just you
- 47:45Speaker 5: would hope that you know a little more and be
- 47:50Speaker 5: able to adjust in the fly better. I don't know
- 47:54Speaker 5: what that means for this game, and going in like again,
- 47:57Speaker 5: the players are the players.
- 47:58Speaker 4: We have what we have, So how can you work around.
- 48:00Speaker 5: That to improve the quality of your defense. I do
- 48:08Speaker 5: think a lot of it. I think we can be
- 48:11Speaker 5: more creative with our secondary guys. If that's our Strengthenish
- 48:13Speaker 5: surely has been.
- 48:15Speaker 7: Again.
- 48:15Speaker 5: Make teams beat us through the air and not on
- 48:19Speaker 5: the ground. Make Preston Stone for Northwestern this week, make
- 48:25Speaker 5: them throw it, find a way to I mean, if
- 48:28Speaker 5: we lose, if we lose a game on Saturday. Make
- 48:31Speaker 5: them have three hundred and fifty to four hundred yards
- 48:33Speaker 5: in the air. Don't let them just ground and pound
- 48:36Speaker 5: and do what they want to do, which control the clock,
- 48:41Speaker 5: kind of possession, all that stuff that I think Rule
- 48:44Speaker 5: kind of believes into.
- 48:46Speaker 4: Right, don't let them do that.
- 48:51Speaker 7: Yeah, it's.
- 48:56Speaker 8: I I mean, honestly, I didn't hear word you just said. There,
- 48:59Speaker 8: Hunter got messed up, So so I mean act like
- 49:02Speaker 8: I heard what you said. I couldn't hear it. It
- 49:04Speaker 8: was like, you guys are playing mine. I'm trying to
- 49:06Speaker 8: read your lists. Couldn't hear where you said. So all right, Austin,
- 49:08Speaker 8: you go.
- 49:10Speaker 6: Well, yes, I do think that that you're right. Rule
- 49:15Speaker 6: believes in the same things, Dak. I appreciate the candor.
- 49:19Speaker 7: Yeah, yeah, no, I'm serious.
- 49:21Speaker 8: I don't know what happened my volume there, for like
- 49:24Speaker 8: the whole time Hunter is talking, it just went completely silent.
- 49:29Speaker 6: But no, you're You're right. I think that we're getting
- 49:33Speaker 6: beaten aways.
- 49:33Speaker 4: Matt.
- 49:33Speaker 6: Rule wants to win, you know, And I think to
- 49:36Speaker 6: point out for Northwestern, as we still continue to try
- 49:39Speaker 6: to evaluate the Northwestern game, will also intrinsically look at
- 49:43Speaker 6: the value of Nebraska football as a whole with the
- 49:45Speaker 6: one loss of a Minnesota game that hunter spiraling that
- 49:52Speaker 6: Northwestern they don't beat themselves. They are third in the
- 49:56Speaker 6: country in penalty yards this year as well. So again
- 50:00Speaker 6: I haven't played anyone, but it just feels like it's
- 50:03Speaker 6: gonna be another. It feels like a Minnesota like kind
- 50:08Speaker 6: of game where they haven't had a lot of sacks,
- 50:10Speaker 6: they don't beat themselves. The other team to beat themselves.
- 50:14Speaker 6: And yeah, Matt Rule. I was thinking about this the
- 50:23Speaker 6: other day, is because at what point does how how
- 50:26Speaker 6: involved do you think Matt Rule is with defensive play Golling.
- 50:31Speaker 7: Not really zero?
- 50:33Speaker 6: At what point does do you get involved?
- 50:37Speaker 4: So Jackson, which.
- 50:43Speaker 5: Dog tacton a lot he made a great point on
- 50:45Speaker 5: after the game and both both ends of play going.
- 50:47Speaker 5: Is a head coach at what what what level are
- 50:51Speaker 5: you involved with decision making on both sides of the ball.
- 50:57Speaker 5: And I do I honder the impression that I think
- 50:58Speaker 5: football coaches, especially how our stats structured, you're not involved
- 51:04Speaker 5: in the play calling as much because you're even he is,
- 51:07Speaker 5: he's more of a GM and overseeing it and you're
- 51:08Speaker 5: trusting your OC, You're trusting your DC.
- 51:11Speaker 4: As a head coach though, when if things don't go
- 51:13Speaker 4: well right, like.
- 51:16Speaker 6: I mean, I think if he is a true CEO type,
- 51:18Speaker 6: when someone quits, that's a you know, vice president that
- 51:23Speaker 6: that rolls up to you. You know, you're the one
- 51:26Speaker 6: that's got to pick up figure out who's picked up
- 51:28Speaker 6: a slack, and help guide the next And then again,
- 51:31Speaker 6: John Butler has not been fired, and I don't know
- 51:33Speaker 6: if he should he should be fired to your one, we.
- 51:37Speaker 5: But play calling wise, to your point, and this is
- 51:41Speaker 5: where it's hard in football, I agree. On defense, you're
- 51:45Speaker 5: you're there's there's an element of calling a play and
- 51:48Speaker 5: then when a team lines up, you are adjusting that
- 51:54Speaker 5: play and tweaking it to as a part of your
- 51:57Speaker 5: defensive schematics to what the offense has, your alignment between
- 52:01Speaker 5: alignment and assignment, that gets adjusted. So yes, you can
- 52:07Speaker 5: help call the plays, and this is an offense too,
- 52:09Speaker 5: you can help call the plays. But when it comes
- 52:12Speaker 5: to like actually designing how that works, you don't. You
- 52:17Speaker 5: don't have much to say. That's on your that's on practice,
- 52:20Speaker 5: on how you're adjusting. It's not something as a head
- 52:23Speaker 5: coach you can say, like you know, you don't have
- 52:25Speaker 5: the time to do that because there it's happening live.
- 52:29Speaker 5: So now can you can you be more generic and say,
- 52:32Speaker 5: hey John, it's second and eight, let's you can do
- 52:37Speaker 5: that kind of stuff, or hey, be more that's what
- 52:41Speaker 5: agress you can do.
- 52:41Speaker 4: As a head coach.
- 52:42Speaker 6: Yeah, he can tell you be more aggressive. I want
- 52:44Speaker 6: to see more blood team.
- 52:46Speaker 4: Or hey, right now we need to put this personnel
- 52:49Speaker 4: in given the situation.
- 52:52Speaker 5: That is your job, I think is a head coach
- 52:54Speaker 5: on offense too, That is your job to make those
- 52:57Speaker 5: And if if if your coordinator is coming in and saying, no,
- 53:03Speaker 5: shut up, this is mine, well then you got bigger issues.
- 53:07Speaker 4: With the staff. And you wonder you wonder if something
- 53:12Speaker 4: some of that happened with Tony White. I don't know,
- 53:16Speaker 4: but yeah, it's part of it.
- 53:20Speaker 7: I don't know.
- 53:21Speaker 6: I think a fair amount concerns out of Northwestern. I
- 53:24Speaker 6: think our I don't think our defense is good. I'm
- 53:26Speaker 6: gonna say it. I think we're beat in the red zone.
- 53:29Speaker 6: We're terrible. We've been terrible on third down the last
- 53:31Speaker 6: couple of weeks. I know, if you we got a
- 53:37Speaker 6: bunch early on and we have gone cold since.
- 53:40Speaker 7: Yeah, nothing nothing closing like And I think.
- 53:44Speaker 4: John made a great comment on his fresh conference.
- 53:47Speaker 5: He said, here's how you forced turnovers by being just
- 53:50Speaker 5: super aggressive and putting a hat to the ball on tackles.
- 53:55Speaker 5: And two, it's disrupting the quarterback and which is which is?
- 53:59Speaker 5: And that that goes with tackling, but also mentally right
- 54:03Speaker 5: throwing picks. And that's a good good way of simplifying
- 54:05Speaker 5: how to get turnovers. Obviously we're not tackling well, and
- 54:10Speaker 5: obviously we're not getting much pressure schematically or physically on
- 54:14Speaker 5: their quarterback.
- 54:15Speaker 4: So that makes sense why we're not getting turnovers.
- 54:18Speaker 5: That's your but that's your job, and he identified it
- 54:20Speaker 5: on how to get those things better, so we do
- 54:22Speaker 5: force turnovers?
- 54:24Speaker 7: Can we go?
- 54:26Speaker 8: Can we all agree? By this point, there's two things
- 54:31Speaker 8: that Nebraska has proven. And I don't think it's gonna
- 54:34Speaker 8: change it all this season. I don't know if you
- 54:35Speaker 8: guys think it'll change. Nebraska can't stop the run, and
- 54:39Speaker 8: the offensive line is horrendous. Yeah, and and every teamails
- 54:44Speaker 8: that now and and and I think it's this forearm season.
- 54:45Speaker 8: It's not gonna change.
- 54:46Speaker 6: Like you can mask it a little bit.
- 54:50Speaker 5: That's that's the coaching staff's job, is I agree they're
- 54:53Speaker 5: not good. How can you coach it to be a
- 54:57Speaker 5: little bit better?
- 54:57Speaker 7: So that Yeah, but they've known that for weeks and
- 55:00Speaker 7: they haven't mastered it at all.
- 55:01Speaker 4: It's like, that's what I'm saying, that's the that's their job.
- 55:05Speaker 4: If we don't fix that, we will end up going
- 55:08Speaker 4: six and six or seven and five because teams will
- 55:10Speaker 4: continue to do it.
- 55:10Speaker 5: Yeah, that's that is why these next few games are huge,
- 55:14Speaker 5: and I think that's why Minnesota. Back to your point,
- 55:17Speaker 5: that's why the Minnesota game hurts and scares you even
- 55:19Speaker 5: more and why I'm kind of maybe maybe not overreacting because.
- 55:25Speaker 9: You feel like these issues should have.
- 55:28Speaker 5: Been addressed already and corrected and it shouldn't have happened
- 55:31Speaker 5: against Minnesota the way it did, but it did, and
- 55:34Speaker 5: so then it becomes well, maybe we maybe this staff,
- 55:39Speaker 5: maybe where we're at right now is a program as
- 55:41Speaker 5: a culture is not going in the direction we thought
- 55:43Speaker 5: it would. And that's the hesitation that everybody goes, oh shit,
- 55:47Speaker 5: and we're gonna know like that in a weird way,
- 55:50Speaker 5: this game is one of the biggest games for the program.
- 55:54Speaker 4: I guess you could say that every week. You should
- 55:56Speaker 4: be saying that every week.
- 55:57Speaker 5: Yeah, as far as the direction it's going, like if
- 56:02Speaker 5: if things get restless Saturday Saturday, and especially if we
- 56:07Speaker 5: find a way to lose this game, you want to
- 56:08Speaker 5: talk about big time spiral, like it could really fall off.
- 56:14Speaker 5: Now you win this game and you prove to everyone.
- 56:18Speaker 5: Players coaches included that okay, no, no, no, that that
- 56:22Speaker 5: we we just we lost focus for one game and
- 56:27Speaker 5: we're back, Like it's okay if.
- 56:29Speaker 4: You do that, Okay, you're fine. But this game, it's
- 56:34Speaker 4: huge in that aspect that if if things come out
- 56:36Speaker 4: and things don't look good and you can't correct, then
- 56:41Speaker 4: you're going, oh shit for the rest of the year.
- 56:44Speaker 5: And to be honest for rules future Nebraska in a
- 56:49Speaker 5: game like that, because you're not going to have the
- 56:52Speaker 5: excuse of well, we were playing we were playing a
- 56:54Speaker 5: top twenty five, a top twenty team.
- 56:56Speaker 4: We were playing a team that just said we're better
- 56:58Speaker 4: than us. You're not gonna have that excuse. So that's
- 57:02Speaker 4: why this game is so big, and.
- 57:05Speaker 5: It again not that it's the biggest game, but it
- 57:08Speaker 5: could be one of the biggest games of rules time
- 57:11Speaker 5: here in Nebraska because of all the implications for the future.
- 57:14Speaker 7: I mean, I don't think.
- 57:17Speaker 8: This shouldn't happen, but maybe the coach staff needed that
- 57:20Speaker 8: Minnesota loss to actually see, hey, we got major problems
- 57:23Speaker 8: on the line, D line, Like maybe these wins were
- 57:26Speaker 8: masking them.
- 57:27Speaker 7: The coach are like, oh, everything's all right.
- 57:28Speaker 4: I just that's what we've been saying.
- 57:30Speaker 7: Yes, I mean you're said, but yes, yeah.
- 57:33Speaker 6: So I.
- 57:36Speaker 8: If they don't come out this week with one fire
- 57:42Speaker 8: to a different blocking scheme something to try to stop Northwestern.
- 57:47Speaker 8: So I still, I still, I just don't think there's
- 57:49Speaker 8: any way this offense like can stop these sacks.
- 57:52Speaker 7: But have three or less sacks and.
- 57:55Speaker 8: The D line finally stopped the run, then then the
- 57:58Speaker 8: boo birds will come out, which you can boo this week, now, Hunter.
- 58:02Speaker 4: That's gonna be happy if we have six sackses, that's great.
- 58:06Speaker 7: I I might because that's an they're good talking point
- 58:09Speaker 7: on Monday. But three real life sacks are calling for
- 58:13Speaker 7: just give up, three real lives.
- 58:14Speaker 4: For the love of god, Booze will come out this week,
- 58:19Speaker 4: whether they're actual booze or sarcastic boost because Earl said it,
- 58:22Speaker 4: I mean yeah they will. They'll be louder than ever.
- 58:26Speaker 5: I really do think the first and you know when
- 58:29Speaker 5: it's gonna come out, it's gonna be the first time
- 58:30Speaker 5: Rayola takes a sack.
- 58:32Speaker 4: I mean, there'll be a sack like it.
- 58:33Speaker 6: Yeah, it will. I mean again, I guess you know,
- 58:40Speaker 6: when you look at Northwestern as far as like the
- 58:43Speaker 6: team that we're playing, they're decent. They're they're okay at everything.
- 58:47Speaker 6: They're not you know, they're not lighting the world on
- 58:50Speaker 6: fire in the passing game. They're not lighting the world
- 58:53Speaker 6: on fire in the running.
- 58:53Speaker 7: Game, which reminds you who you're right Minnesota, you know.
- 59:05Speaker 4: They do have average what is it, one good receiver?
- 59:12Speaker 4: I think is what I've been here.
- 59:14Speaker 6: They have one good receiver. They like I said, their
- 59:16Speaker 6: third down percentage is forty six percent converting third down
- 59:21Speaker 6: on the offense. That's pretty freaking good against. And we
- 59:25Speaker 6: gave up forty six percent last week, and like for
- 59:28Speaker 6: forty three percent last week and forty six percent the
- 59:31Speaker 6: week before that, and the week before that we gave
- 59:33Speaker 6: up four or five on fourth downs.
- 59:40Speaker 5: Yeah, like I said, we're not gonna be hiding. You
- 59:43Speaker 5: can't hide this week. No, No, it is going We're
- 59:48Speaker 5: going to see where we're at as a program.
- 59:50Speaker 6: The average five yards to carry.
- 59:56Speaker 7: Yeah, that's that's scarce that right there. I they're gonna
- 1:00:03Speaker 7: do the same thing this so a day at least
- 1:00:05Speaker 7: for the first half. Like it's it's gonna be just repeat.
- 1:00:07Speaker 8: They're gonna try to It's what I said, just prove, prove,
- 1:00:10Speaker 8: We tell them Nebras can stop it.
- 1:00:13Speaker 6: They have had ten fumbles this year, which you know,
- 1:00:17Speaker 6: I haven't really thought about because we haven't forced a
- 1:00:19Speaker 6: fumble and we haven't really fumbled since, haven't Johnson's See.
- 1:00:25Speaker 5: That's the other thing that's we forget the Minnesota game.
- 1:00:30Speaker 5: It's not like we killed ourselves turning them all.
- 1:00:33Speaker 6: Over, passing appearance calls.
- 1:00:36Speaker 5: Yes, a couple of penalties or special teams where we've
- 1:00:41Speaker 5: kind of struggled that I wasn't an issue again.
- 1:00:45Speaker 9: Yeah it was, thank you Mike Clerk.
- 1:00:51Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 1:00:51Speaker 8: But then then you have a ninety eight yard punt,
- 1:00:52Speaker 8: thank you, Mikelert, Mike Eckler. And what do they do
- 1:00:55Speaker 8: drive ninety ears down the field or not any our
- 1:00:57Speaker 8: punt whatever the.
- 1:00:58Speaker 6: Pup was, they put them on the one, pin him
- 1:01:00Speaker 6: on the one and a half. Yeah, thanks, Or when
- 1:01:02Speaker 6: we have a you know, a fifty yard pump return,
- 1:01:04Speaker 6: what do we do we pump the ball because we
- 1:01:06Speaker 6: had a fourth and forty seven or thirdy whatever it was.
- 1:01:11Speaker 8: May Maybe that's what we need. Maybe we need Mike Keckler.
- 1:01:14Speaker 8: They put him on the line. John is up a
- 1:01:15Speaker 8: ninety nine hour touchdown. Maybe Mike Eckler fist fights John Butler.
- 1:01:20Speaker 8: Maybe that's what Nebraska needs.
- 1:01:22Speaker 4: Yep, we need it. We need it to think coaches
- 1:01:24Speaker 4: will be fighting on the side.
- 1:01:28Speaker 7: Mike. Mike Keckler would be the one to do it.
- 1:01:32Speaker 6: Okay.
- 1:01:32Speaker 4: Scour predictions, I haven't chewing on.
- 1:01:38Speaker 6: I just don't know how many points to get. I'm
- 1:01:39Speaker 6: definitely not I'm taking rothbustermen to cover the spread. We're
- 1:01:42Speaker 6: not winning more than seven and a half. Calling that
- 1:01:44Speaker 6: right now, I think I'm gonna go twenty four to
- 1:01:47Speaker 6: seventeen the Nebraska. Now I'm going twenty twenty four Nebraska,
- 1:01:54Speaker 6: twenty four to twenty Nebraska.
- 1:01:56Speaker 8: There we go, you stick, you stick exactly what I
- 1:01:59Speaker 8: was getting, Okay, I changed nothing. I'll go, jeez, twenty
- 1:02:08Speaker 8: seven twenty four Nebraska. And That's that's not very confident
- 1:02:16Speaker 8: right there. I'm not very confident in prediction.
- 1:02:20Speaker 5: I want to believe one last time, guys, I'm I
- 1:02:24Speaker 5: just I'm holding out hope. I'm gonna believe one last time.
- 1:02:27Speaker 5: Nebraska thirty to fourteen. Oh Jesus, hold out, hold out,
- 1:02:32Speaker 5: one last hope. I'm actually very terrified of the scenario
- 1:02:37Speaker 5: of a close game and losing a close game like
- 1:02:41Speaker 5: back to like we play okay and play it well enough,
- 1:02:46Speaker 5: like fix a lot, save a lot of the things,
- 1:02:48Speaker 5: but then it's a close game and we lose because
- 1:02:50Speaker 5: of something in the last second. I'm terrified of that.
- 1:02:54Speaker 5: But I'm gonna say we respond well. I think we've
- 1:02:57Speaker 5: shown to do that, and I hope we do. If
- 1:03:01Speaker 5: we don't, Like I said that, the spiral has already
- 1:03:04Speaker 5: kind of started, it will really take off if we
- 1:03:07Speaker 5: end up losing this game, especially this is.
- 1:03:11Speaker 4: To win by a way to win we can. We
- 1:03:13Speaker 4: can hang on here and have some hope. But I
- 1:03:18Speaker 4: think we're gonna I think we're gonna respond well.
- 1:03:19Speaker 6: I do.
- 1:03:20Speaker 4: I hope we do.
- 1:03:24Speaker 6: Before we go. Here's a quick thing. David Broun, the
- 1:03:26Speaker 6: head coach at Northwestern, I just just tweet up year
- 1:03:30Speaker 6: three for Matt Ruhle. There's a record seventeen to fifteen,
- 1:03:34Speaker 6: nine and thirteen and the big ten one to no

- 1:04:17Speaker 7: Uh.
- 1:04:20Speaker 8: I've heard from one of our listeners, Larry.
- 1:04:25Speaker 4: Finally finally to go to a game with like something
- 1:04:28Speaker 4: more than shorts and a T shirt, which every game
- 1:04:31Speaker 4: I've been to that's been the that's been the tires.
- 1:04:34Speaker 4: So it'll be it a little a little colder, which
- 1:04:37Speaker 4: which I love. It's football weather. Its perfect. Yeah.
