- 0:00The Cleveland Indians faced the New York Yankees at Yankee Stadium for a Tuesday night game on May 10th, 1960.
- 0:06The season was still young, but both teams were off to decent starts.
- 0:10The Tribe was led by manager Joe Gordon and the Yankees by Casey Stengel.
- 0:15Cleveland had been an average team for several years after their historic 111 win season in 1954.
- 0:21The Yankees were coming off a disappointing season in 1959,
- 0:24having won 79 games and missing the World Series for only the second time in 11 years.
- 0:30This audio recording is from the New York Radio broadcast featuring announcers Red Barber, Phil Rizzuto, Mel Allen, and Bob Delaney.
- 1:00This is a video for Ken Kacke of the Northern Association Against Jacksonville.
- 1:07Casey's debut in organized baseball was with a base hit.
- 1:12He had a single, stole a base, but his ball club lost the game 3-2.
- 1:17So Casey has seen a powerful lot of baseball in the last five decades and quite an anniversary
- 1:23and quite a record that Mr. Stengel has compiled, not only as a manager of the most successful team in baseball,
- 1:31the New York Yankees, but also a very fine record as a player.
- 1:37Fifty years and so our congratulations to Casey Stengel.
- 1:42I wonder if he can remember all the details of that first ball game.
- 1:46Johnny Chepa leading off while the Cleveland Indians had their play ball time at Yankee Stadium.
- 1:52Billy Short, the young left-hander into the lineup of the first pitch, gets in low, ball one.
- 2:00Johnny Temple, right-handed hitter.
- 2:06Late his career of course, up until his trade to the Indians with the Cincinnati Red Legs.
- 2:13The pitch, fastball is right in for a called strike.
- 2:16One and one.
- 2:17Temple hits a lot to right fielder, at least he did when he was in the national league.
- 2:25The right fielder, frequently playing very shallow and right, I noticed that Maras in right,
- 2:30is playing him about straight away.
- 2:32He used to hit a great deal into short right.
- 2:35The one-one pitch, a let-up, swung on, hit fair, fast third into the corner and left field.
- 2:39It's a fair ball and the ball boy almost touched it.
- 2:42And here is Temple rolling at his second base with a double.
- 2:45That play was almost compounded by the ball boy, thinking the ball had gone foul.
- 2:50He almost tried to make a play on the ball.
- 2:54It went through his leg and it was not interfered with in any way.
- 2:58But that young fellow is feeling mighty low at the moment, but he was fortunate in that the ball,
- 3:05which he thought had gone foul, he tried to play and the ball went through his legs.
- 3:09But he never touched it.
- 3:10The ball caromed off the fence out there and it landed a double anyway.
- 3:18Now the Indians have a runner on second and it's time for us now to pick up Red Barber,
- 3:21who'll continue the action as the hitter is Harvey Keene.
- 3:27The first pitch, low inside ball one.
- 3:33Keene, who came to the Tigers, came to the Indians from the Tigers in exchange for Rocky
- 3:37Colabito in a very controversial deal.
- 3:45The pitch that Keene has swung on hit foul back up this way.
- 3:48One ball and one strike.
- 3:50Red, I think it's about time we picked you up.
- 3:55We have no score, just the beginning.
- 3:57The first hitter is the second base, going to come up with a double.
- 4:06Red Crest pushing his first base to Cleveland.
- 4:09Sergio White pushing his third.
- 4:13One-one pitch, here the curve swung on and foul back into Howard's mask.
- 4:16And he got it else than also on the right shoulder.
- 4:20All right, one ball, two strikes.
- 4:22There was a very familiar fellow pitching batting practice tonight for the Indians.
- 4:26They just brought him up to do that work for them.
- 4:29Ted Wilks.
- 4:31He used to be quite a relief man with a shape of a cardinal.
- 4:35All right, one ball, two strikes.
- 4:39Good luck to second pitchers.
- 4:43And Keene pitched a curve low inside ball too.
- 4:46Two and two.
- 4:46Two balls, two strikes.
- 4:49Fifty years ago today out of Tancotillo, Illinois, a young ball player played in his
- 4:53first ball game, case a single.
- 4:54They got a base hit and stole a base.
- 4:56And here fifty years to the day later, over there managing in the Yankee dugout, watching
- 5:02these kids out for take on these challenging Cleveland Indians.
- 5:05No score.
- 5:07Change of pace to call on and left foul back.
- 5:12First base, guys can't quite come up to it.
- 5:14And it is still two and two.
- 5:16It was a good try.
- 5:18It was a low foul ball.
- 5:20Couldn't quite get back.
- 5:22Half step short.
- 5:24Folks still coming in.
- 5:26The next two days with Cleveland, three, two o'clock.
- 5:34Keene holding up that down by the end.
- 5:42June 5th, all waiting on deck.
- 5:48The pitch is low inside the curve ball.
- 5:52Three, three and two.
- 5:56Three balls, two strikes.
- 6:06Rotation to forearm fire.
- 6:08Childlike behind the plate.
- 6:10McKinley is at first.
- 6:12Stevens at second.
- 6:14Holman checks at third.
- 6:18Short in his pitching position with the runner.
- 6:20Second delivers low ball four.
- 6:24So a double by Temple.
- 6:26It is followed by a base on balls to Keene.
- 6:30And here is Jimmy Pearsaw.
- 6:32Who is playing left field tonight.
- 6:34For the first time he's ever played at a stadium.
- 6:38Pearsaw hitting three or six.
- 6:40He just hit his way into the outfield.
- 6:48Jimmy Pearsaw made some fantastic catches.
- 6:52Red stocks against the Yankees.
- 6:54Right hand batter.
- 6:56Dinfield has to be looking for the bunt.
- 6:58Runner at first and second.
- 7:00Nobody out, no score.
- 7:02Pearsaw blocks the bunt, takes the low curve, ball one.
- 7:04Short has walked a half a dozen in each of his three previous starts.
- 7:08Now it's about time to talk to him.
- 7:18He's out there talking.
- 7:20Down the left hander.
- 7:32Not a slow start but the club has been rolling.
- 7:38That's you back into right on Pearsaw.
- 7:40They're not playing in the hole.
- 7:42Temple off second.
- 7:43Keene off first.
- 7:45Pearsaw swings a ground ball to short.
- 7:47Two bucks over to Wickerstand.
- 7:48One on the first base into the base.
- 7:50The strong can get with it for a double play.
- 7:52Temple moves over to third base.
- 7:55So they let Pearsaw hit.
- 7:58And he hits short curve balls to short.
- 8:02And it was two back to Richardson to Scharren.
- 8:05You can see that double play was just coming.
- 8:10Now we have Woody Hale with short stops.
- 8:13Who's been generating a lot of power for the Yankees hitting three or two.
- 8:17He has 19 hits.
- 8:19Most hits on the club by Big Power who's the on deck batter.
- 8:24Hale has hit the home runs for the club.
- 8:26He's hit Fritz.
- 8:27He represents the only home run power in this starting batting order.
- 8:31That's an oddity.
- 8:33All right, no score.
- 8:34Two out.
- 8:37Hale the right hand batter.
- 8:39Over the close stands.
- 8:41Swings to the curve and lands it off Scharren.
- 8:43Short down the right field corner.
- 8:45Temple scores.
- 8:46Hale is on his way around first.
- 8:47Headed to second base.
- 8:48Marich is up for the ball.
- 8:49And Hale comes in standing with a double.
- 8:52That was a Wicket Line drive.
- 8:54Scharren started over to the line.
- 8:55Just did ticket for the end of his glove but he didn't even slow it down.
- 8:58So despite the double play the Indians have scored.
- 9:01And Hale about to end his sixth run.
- 9:06His fourteenth run.
- 9:08That's the most on the club.
- 9:10And Big Power is better than 12 and has the most hits with 25 is that.
- 9:13Power has always been a tough hitter for the Yankees to get him out.
- 9:19So double the right for Hale.
- 9:22RBI, Power, in a severe crowd, right hand hitter.
- 9:26Swings and hits a foul ball out of play back of first base.
- 9:29It's 1-0.
- 9:30Play for the Indians.
- 9:36That field is back into right on Power.
- 9:43Third base coach Joe Joe White keeps reminding Hale to second base to get going on anything.
- 9:48Two out.
- 9:58Short is ready to pitch.
- 10:00He does.
- 10:02A strike.
- 10:03Breaking ball on the outside corner.
- 10:05That was his change.
- 10:06He took a little off the fast ball and you could see the ball sink.
- 10:10No ball, two strikes.
- 10:16Nothing in two.
- 10:22Two strike pitch.
- 10:23Swung on and bounced back over the mound.
- 10:25Slowed it to shortstop.
- 10:26Kuvec has to hurry and he can't make the play and they get Hale over running third.
- 10:30And they throw to Mike Duggo, it's Ron Hage, they run him back and Hale is out.
- 10:34Kuvec came in on the slow bounder that bounced over the pitcher.
- 10:38If the base hit a single and when Kuvec saw he couldn't make the play at first base,
- 10:42he very wisely didn't even attempt to throw, looked up and Hale had gone a step around third base.
- 10:46So he threw to Mike Duggo and then in the ensuing run down he was out to Mike Duggo to catch a howler back to Mike Duggo again.
- 10:52So Power, a single to short.
- 10:56And it is one run on three hits, one man left.
- 11:02Hale was caught in the run down over running.
- 11:07Shortstop to the third baseman to the catcher to the third baseman.
- 11:15A lot of action in the top of the first inning.
- 11:18A lot of base running but the double play really was the key to keeping the Indians from having a big inning.
- 11:24Came up with three hits but scored only one.
- 11:26Three hits and a base on balls.
- 11:28Double play ball plus head work on the part of Tony Kuvec kept the Indians from causing more trouble than they did.
- 11:38Here's Kuvec and Perry, the fast ballers first pitch breaks inside ball one.
- 11:43Perry is a long angular boy standing well over six feet tall who broke in so dramatically against the Yankees last season striking out the side in a relief appearance.
- 11:55The next pitch is swung on a full foul into the seat and right field.
- 12:00Tony really came around on that and laced it sharply in among the spectators well down the right field foul line.
- 12:11Defensively it's Strickland at third.
- 12:13A shortstop is what he held.
- 12:15Johnny Temple is at second.
- 12:16At first is Vic Power.
- 12:18Kersol is in left.
- 12:19Hardy in center.
- 12:20Keene in right.
- 12:21Romano catching and Perry's pitch just a little bit high.
- 12:24Ball two and strike one.
- 12:32This is an all young pitching staff for Cleveland.
- 12:38Pitch, first one on line in the right field.
- 12:40The base hit for Kuvec.
- 12:41He may go for two.
- 12:42He is turning to the left his first.
- 12:44Here is the throw from Keene and he's in there for a double.
- 12:48Tony makes it ten straight games as he puts the tying on promptly at second base.
- 12:54And apparently after a day off both these ball clubs have come out here swinging.
- 12:59The Indians weren't scheduled for one but they got it because of the weather in Boston yesterday.
- 13:03So Tony now gets his hitting string into the double figures.
- 13:11One nothing Cleveland.
- 13:14And the batter is MacDougall.
- 13:25MacDougall hitting it to 59.
- 13:31Gill made that play just now to get the third out top the first inning possible by staying put at third base.
- 13:38So infielders and outfielders have got to always know where they should be on each play.
- 13:47Of course if you don't watch them you don't notice that they're doing it.
- 13:55Kuvec leading down on second.
- 13:58There's a curve over for a called strike by MacDougall.
- 14:01Nothing in one.
- 14:04Jim Perry pitching.
- 14:05John Romano catching.
- 14:06Big power at first base.
- 14:08Johnny Temple.
- 14:10That's the big fellow they got in the winter from Cincinnati's at second.
- 14:12Woody Hall is at short.
- 14:13And the third baseman is George Strickland.
- 14:17The strike one puts to MacDougall.
- 14:19The curve hits foul.
- 14:21Almost got the first base coach Ralph Houch.
- 14:23But he turns away from it.
- 14:24Ball goes on down.
- 14:26Strike two.
- 14:28Jerry Piaf-Sol is in left field. Carol Hardy is in center and Harvey Keen is in right.
- 14:37Over all, two strikes.
- 14:42Cassetti coaching at third base.
- 14:44Ralph Houch at first.
- 14:55The right hander delivers a fast ball that is foul tipped.
- 14:58And it's Nick Chilack that played umpire primarily on his chest protector, outside chest protector.
- 15:08One nothing Cleveland and the Yankees have had Kuvec lead off five out of eight games with a base hit.
- 15:15And this one is a double so the tying runs at second base.
- 15:22Three of the games in the American League are tonight.
- 15:28The two-strike pitch, fast ball that is foul tipped, and it hits Chilack in the chest protector again.
- 15:34That's the successive pitches that he has been hit.
- 15:37You know, that chest protector doesn't exactly absorb at all.
- 15:44I think this last one shook up Nesta.
- 15:51Walked in a small circle there for a few seconds.
- 15:55Boom, boom. And now a pair of emotions for Romano to come out.
- 15:58Romano is the catcher that they got from the White Sox.
- 16:12Now Chilack is going out to break up this meeting between the pitcher and the catcher and saying,
- 16:17let's go, fellas. Big night game. A lot of fine folks there in the stands.
- 16:29All right, nothing and two.
- 16:33Mike Dugle, splash stands.
- 16:41Perry checks the run at second pitch. And Gill swinging, hits the ball foul down on the right field corner.
- 16:47Still two strikes.
- 17:00Perry is 6'4", 185 pounds.
- 17:06So when we say it's all right, Henry, we do mean it.
- 17:19Perry in position. Two bags left going off second.
- 17:22The pitch is swung on to the high fly ball off the pier saw in left field.
- 17:26He's waiting for it, waiting for it. He has it.
- 17:30So we have one up.
- 17:35But now it's Mickey Maddell who hits the face in the first 13, batting 321.
- 17:55Maddell gets a big hand, steps in against this Cleveland right-hander.
- 18:00Two bats left-handed.
- 18:03That field is deep and around toward right.
- 18:12Perry takes the sign from Romano.
- 18:19The pitch, back ball inside, low, ball one.
- 18:26He gets straightened above that.
- 18:35One nothing, play for the Indians.
- 18:39The pitch is high and inside, ball two. Two and up.
- 18:52Two balls, no strikes. First base is open.
- 18:55Back of Maddell is Maris, then Scharron, then Bella, then Howard.
- 19:04And right now Maris is the hottest hitter in either big league.
- 19:08Pitch is a curve, inside, ball three. Three and up.
- 19:17Two balls, no strikes.
- 19:29Mickey waiting.
- 19:35Perry gets all set. Pitch is outside, ball four.
- 19:48And Maddell, Maddell is just 15th walk.
- 19:53That goes along with 18 hits.
- 19:57Roger Maris, hitting at 458.
- 20:03Maris goes out to talk with Perry.
- 20:07Maris has 10 hits to his last 18 official at bat.
- 20:10That's a clip of 566.
- 20:12He's reached base safely 14 times in his last 21 appearances.
- 20:15That's a clip of 667.
- 20:20So there he is.
- 20:22Now, it's a one-nothing game for Cleveland.
- 20:24The Yankees pressing back with Manett first and second.
- 20:27One out, first inning.
- 20:29Maris with a left-hander.
- 20:32Swings and does not get a high curve ball.
- 20:35Strike one.
- 20:37Maris started out his major league career with Cleveland.
- 20:41He was dealt from Cleveland to Kansas City.
- 20:43And then he was the big man that the Yankees traded for this winter.
- 20:47So far he's really made that trade stand up.
- 20:53Perry checks the lead runner, Kubek, at second.
- 20:55Delivers a curve that's hung on a miss.
- 20:57Strike two.
- 20:58That was a low inside curve.
- 21:02He started him with a high slider.
- 21:05Didn't break much, but it broke quickly.
- 21:07And then he came back with a big curve ball on his side.
- 21:10Now he's got him two quick strikes.
- 21:16Perry's taking his time.
- 21:18He's holding the ball between both bare hands.
- 21:20Now he slips on the glove.
- 21:22Holds the ball behind his back as he takes the sign.
- 21:24Comes down out of his stretch.
- 21:26Check second.
- 21:28Head bob.
- 21:30Pitches.
- 21:31A fast ball high inside, as it is ball one.
- 21:35Now we've got around the bill of the cap.
- 21:39One ball, two strikes.
- 21:46Kubek at second, Maddly at first.
- 21:49One nothing.
- 21:50Played with the Indians.
- 21:53That'll not happen so far in this first inning.
- 21:59The pitch is swung on far back.
- 22:05That was a fast ball that seemed to me to be on the inside, hand high.
- 22:09Now he's had to protect the plate.
- 22:17The Indians had two doubles, a walk, and a single first inning, and only got one run.
- 22:37Now he walks off the mound.
- 22:41He's got a bit of a strategy when he gets a couple strikes on the head to let him wait.
- 22:47Some pitchers do that.
- 22:49One and two.
- 22:54He throws to first, and Maddly's back.
- 22:57That was a step flying.
- 22:59I don't know who gave the sign, but somebody did.
- 23:03Power broke.
- 23:04He was deep.
- 23:05You see, with a runner at second base, Maddly had to come back in on his chest, slide forward with his hand.
- 23:10Well, I bet you that Hog jumped a foot when he saw that play start.
- 23:17Right, one ball, two strikes.
- 23:21Now Rick's waiting.
- 23:22Maddly's box, left hand hitter.
- 23:25The six foot four inch right-hander delivers the curve.
- 23:28Swung on a broken back, the puck fly, and he has automatically added him to the infield fly roll,
- 23:35and the hitting part of the bat flew into the stands.
- 23:39I would say a dozen rows back of the Yankee dugout.
- 23:42Right now the spectators are looking to see if the bat struck anyone.
- 23:47Of a bumping Bill Fowler.
- 23:49He must have hit Maris right on the fist, as they say, and snapped off that bat,
- 23:55because the hitting part went over in the stands back of the Yankee dugout,
- 23:58all the Yankees on the top of the step looking back in.
- 24:03The pop fly went to the shortstop, and for the protection of the runner, the infield fly was invoked,
- 24:07and Maris is automatically out.
- 24:10And apparently nobody was hurt.
- 24:13The spectators are a little waving over there while the bat went.
- 24:16And here is the mighty Moose scouring up, two down, and there's a call strike.
- 24:22He buzzed that one over the inside hand high.
- 24:24Scour hitting at 333.
- 24:28Now, correct, scour hitting at 400.
- 24:3126 hits, and he's about at in 20.
- 24:36One nothing Cleveland.
- 24:40Scour pitching very deliberately.
- 24:44Since Kubeck opened up one in with a double, he gets Tony Stiller's second, and Madeline at first.
- 24:51Scour and swing to the curve, strike two.
- 24:58No balls, two strikes.
- 25:04And he's looking at the rear of Pitcher's mound, pulling with a rossin' bag, looking at the day.
- 25:12Lugs up the ball.
- 25:15And that is certainly his pattern. If he gets two strikes on the hitter, he's going to make him white.
- 25:20All right, now Jim Perry up on the mound.
- 25:27Another headbutt check at second Pitcher, the curve, that is foul back.
- 25:33Scour, strike two.
- 25:36The lights on for the first night game of the season at the stadium.
- 25:41This is the start of a big series.
- 25:45Big for both ball clubs.
- 25:47We'll see you again in the next two afternoons, Wednesday and Thursday.
- 26:06Perry delivers and strikes out on a fastball up by his man.
- 26:10Defending, he's simply overpowering, and he got out of the jam, Kubeck opened with a double, and never got off second base.
- 26:16One run, one hit.
- 26:19Well, friends, in the first inning we have had an aggregate of four hits, three of them doubles, two bases on balls,
- 26:26and yet out of it has only emerged one run, which Cleveland possesses.
- 26:31So the score at the end of the first inning is Cleveland one and New York nothing, and let's pause for space identification.
- 26:37You are tuned to 1460 on the radio dial. This is WOKO, Albany, New York.
- 26:42We're in the 15 seconds on the WOKO clock, 8.30. Temperature is 58 degrees.
- 27:05Let's check the other ball games for you. Young Bill Short gets ready to pitch the second inning of his fourth major league star.
- 27:11Chicago has started at Boston, Wynn versus Casale, and the White Sox didn't score that first flick.
- 27:18Kansas City, Baltimore, all against Wilhelm, and at the end of an inning and a half it is one-nothing in favor of the Athletics.
- 27:24And at the end of the first inning, Detroit at Washington, Mosley versus Clemenger, it is no score.
- 27:29Detroit has lost its last hit. Philadelphia, San Francisco, Pittsburgh, Los Angeles, I doubt it will have much on that for you.
- 27:36Chicago, Post-Pon, what's around, and this is the fifth straight post-ponement at Wrigley Field, Chicago.
- 27:44They just lost the whole series with the Milwaukee Braves. That's rough.
- 27:48Now we have John Romano, right-hand hitting catcher, much promise that the White Sox gave up in the Monosha deal.
- 27:58Takes a call strike from Short. The left-hander delivers a change of pace, but the short makes it hold it in the glass.
- 28:05A line drive that if you hadn't caught it in the glove would have hit him at the point of his right shoulder.
- 28:11He just stuck the glove up there, and there she was. He pikes you.
- 28:19Now we have George Strickland, the veteran infielder who returned after a year's absence from baseball last year and what's third.
- 28:29He used to be the shortstop at Cleveland in his younger days. In fact, when Cleveland last had a pennant winner who played in the World Series against the Giants, he was the shortstop.
- 28:40Pikes the pitch inside, ball wide.
- 28:46Strickland hits a high pop fly. Second baseman Richardson is on Rick.
- 28:51He's got it. I know you think it was over there how important to take it, but pitch is short.
- 28:56He's directing things out there in the middle of that dam.
- 29:00All right, two up, two down. A line drive and a pop fly.
- 29:04One-nothing Cleveland, and the hitter is the young outfielder, and the center fielder is a nice girl, Hardy.
- 29:09He hit one for six. Strickland wanted that one for six.
- 29:25Pitch is the curve ball over for a soft strike, and when it looks as though Hardy might have had a bump notion, short was off that mound like a rabbit starting for the third baseline.
- 29:39Nothing and one.
- 29:49Hardy right hand batter swings and grounds his foul. Strike two. There's an outside breaking ball.
- 29:57The ball is retrieved, but to Childlike for inspection, he passes inspection and continues as the ball in play.
- 30:07And nothing and two.
- 30:23Short deals outside. Ball one. One and two.
- 30:30I thought Tommy Holmes in the Hilltrip Bien this morning had a very fine story about this young pitcher and about the Yankee pitching staff, his present status.
- 30:41One-two pitch, change of pace, swing on and hit foul down in the left field stand. Down in the corner. One and two.
- 30:59Hardy spent most of last year at Seattle, but part of it was Cleveland.
- 31:10This was a fellow that was a big football star among the Colorado.
- 31:15One-two pitch, swing on and a high foul out of play, back of the Yankee dugout.
- 31:21He out holds one and two. Two out. Bases clear.
- 31:43One-two pitch is on the ground ball, hits to Skowin who's up with it and Hardy is out. He's swinging late.
- 31:51And the score at the end of an inning and a half remains Cleveland one and New York nothing.
- 31:57And Yogi is hitting at 333.
- 32:02Left hand batter.
- 32:10He's got to feel around toward right.
- 32:15Yogi takes a pitch low inside, ball one.
- 32:19I'm watching where Johnny Temple is playing. He's pretty well over toward first base and at the edge of the grass.
- 32:25We were interviewing him before the ball game down in the dugout.
- 32:28He's a very pleasant and intelligent spoken young man.
- 32:31Pitch high outside ball two and he volunteered the information that it was real tough to come over into another league.
- 32:37So you didn't know the pitches, how to hit at them, how big their curves are, how hard they threw the ball,
- 32:43and also that you just did not know how to play the different hitters.
- 32:48But he's working at it he says.
- 32:52And he is ready to pitch the ball to an out does and it's over fastball for a called strike.
- 33:08First to the last and second in England.
- 33:10One nothing Cleveland. Yankees at bat.
- 33:12Dallas Swings has a high foul that is close to the stands and back behind the vistas dugout.
- 33:19We told you that the White Sox did not score their first lick up at Boston.
- 33:27Well the Red Sox have not been retired in the last of the first inning but Vic Wirtz has hit a grand slam home run.
- 33:42He's having his troubles getting going this year.
- 33:49Two and two to Yogi.
- 33:54He's got a lot of ideas, a curve that's come out of the high five ball to deep right Tennessee.
- 34:20And now it's Boston Howitz.
- 34:24He's getting through 18 but he's better than 15.
- 34:31Right hand hit him, over the close stands.
- 34:33Feet pretty well spread out.
- 34:36Takes the fastball too low.
- 34:37Ball one.
- 34:46Half swing and a foul back.
- 35:05One and one.
- 35:20Make no mistake this Cleveland club has some fine young arms.
- 35:26And they took the gamble when they traded Michael Ashton the winner that the young fellows could do it.
- 35:30Fastball is in there, strike two.
- 35:45One ball, two strikes.
- 35:58Very deal.
- 36:00Misses with the fastball low inside to the knee.
- 36:15Two and two.
- 36:18One out, nobody on left for second.
- 36:22That's how it works.
- 36:30And Howard is out.
- 36:32Now we have Trudeau and Bobby Richardson stepping in.
- 36:37Byron's hitting a 2-17 but he's moving up.
- 36:45He's had five hits in his last 13 official trips.
- 36:49I feel shades him a step into left.
- 37:02Very deal.
- 37:03The Curbs went on to the line drive foul into the seats behind first base.
- 37:14Folks over there have been kept looking, they've had a couple of line drive fouls and half of a bat.
- 37:23Nothing in one.
- 37:33Very delivers, snaps it right over.
- 37:36All strike two.
- 37:38He's very tall, 6'4".
- 37:40He's quite lean and he is very loose.
- 37:43Trudeau's into his full pitching motion and pumping when there's nobody on.
- 37:48You can tell he means it.
- 38:02He's got a curve outside, a foul one.
- 38:22Trudeau taking his time with two strikes on the bat, two out.
- 38:34Good deal.
- 38:52Curbs went on, foul back again.
- 39:10One, two pitches, a fastball's going on, he's going back, back, back, back on, makes the catch.
- 39:22So we have an afternoon game.
- 39:26Jim Perry leads off as we go to the top of the third inning.
- 39:33Short's first pitch to Perry is swung on and lofted into right center field, Mantle moving over and has plenty of time to make the catch.
- 39:41He reached across the plate, got under the ball, pops it up into comparatively shallow right center field.
- 39:49One out and that brings the top of the order up again.
- 39:52Johnny Temple, who opened the game with a double and came around to score the one run the Indians were able to get in the first inning,
- 39:59despite the fact that they got three hits, a base on balls.
- 40:05A double play, however, nullified the chance for a big inning and then a cutoff play, a third base, in which a man was trapped, finally retired the side.
- 40:14The call strikes to Temple.
- 40:17He's going off to find stock for Cleveland.
- 40:20He has 19 hits for 73 at bats.
- 40:23Good shape in 10 straight now.
- 40:29Right hand batter. Swing then, fouls the ball to the upper spades like a first base.
- 40:35Johnny knows that he is small as players go. He doesn't try to hit the ball out of the park.
- 40:39He doesn't want to park this size.
- 40:41He's a sharp hitter.
- 40:43Fine fielder, quite a competitor.
- 40:47And the word down to Cleveland dugout is that he has become the boss man of that infield.
- 40:54Unofficial captain.
- 41:00A two strike pitch. Swung on, grounded down, two short, two back from the holes, and throws him out by two strikes.
- 41:07So we have two down as the Yankees' young left-hander Bill Short continues working.
- 41:15He doesn't act like a rookie out there.
- 41:22Here's Harvey Keene, who's a hard fellow to fool and a tough man to pitch to and got a base on balls in the first inning.
- 41:29Keene is hitting 300 on the nose right now. He's his last year's batting champion.
- 41:40He's inside breaking ball, ball one.
- 41:48On ball, no strikes.
- 41:54Keene is standing way back in the box with the right hand hitter. He's far back if he can go.
- 42:01Pitch outside, ball two. He hit.353 last year.
- 42:08And on the Sunday before the season opened, he and Califito were traded even up.
- 42:15That news was a detonation in both towns.
- 42:20Keene was in there for a called strike. Two and one. Two balls, one strike.
- 42:33Harvey missed some games early in the year for a bad leg. He's quick to change his face outside, ball three.
- 42:40We were asking him before the game began how the leg was, and he says considerably better.
- 42:46Gathered by that, that he's not completely well, but he's playing.
- 42:54All right, three and one.
- 42:58The pitch is high outside, ball four. And Keene draws his second walk.
- 43:03On the two walks, given up by short.
- 43:07And this gets Jimmy Pearsall at the plate. Pearsall came into the game hitting a.306 in the first inning with Keene at first and Temple at second.
- 43:14He cracked into a double play.
- 43:17Engineered by Kuback and pivoted on by Richardson and finished the scoundrel.
- 43:25That was the 16th Yankee double play. One nothing Cleveland.
- 43:29Fair blow inside, and it is ball one.
- 43:33They're giving Pearsall the gap in left center. They're not playing into throw very much.
- 43:39And now there's quite a ways open in the right center field.
- 43:45Nice as he steps back toward the line.
- 43:51Pitch is hung on to the ground ball to Kuback. Goes a short wait a second to Richardson to get the force on Keene.
- 43:59Two. No runs. No hits. One last.
- 44:04No errors. And the score, end of two and a half innings tonight. First night game of the season at the stadium. The Indians won and the Yankees nothing.
- 44:11How do you feel about the man who lubricates your car? In a completely unrehearsed interview, one driver expressed his feelings.
- 44:21Short swings as he throws from the left side.
- 44:27Very big wind up in his first pitch inside ball one.
- 44:42Here's the one-oh pitch. Taken right in there for a called strike one and one.
- 44:50That's ball fouled off.
- 45:03Sorry, put it in a rather leisurely looking fashion.
- 45:08Deals and it is strike three. Gave him a quick little curve. Put him out. Second strike out.
- 45:16One down. Now here is Kuback who doubled in the first inning.
- 45:21But never got off second base.
- 45:25They are setting the outfield a step toward right on Tony.
- 45:29Now they're moving it back.
- 45:32They're moving hard. He backed over into left center field and giving Kuback the gap in right center.
- 45:38Right down in there for a strike. He's throwing center of his curve balls. He's throwing everything pretty hard.
- 45:51He's had a good strike out record since he's been a professional pitcher.
- 45:54There's a fastball thrown on and hit high toward right side of Hardy going back. He's under it.
- 46:02Two down. One nothing Cleveland.
- 46:14Mike Gugel, oh for one, hit a fly ball left field the first inning.
- 46:20Moves in and Mantle steps in the on deck hitter's circle.
- 46:29No shading Gill into left.
- 46:34Pitches a low curve. Too low. Ball one.
- 46:47One ball. No strikes.
- 46:58Right handed deals a curve over.
- 47:01That was on the target. One and one.
- 47:16Fastball thrown on and hit out of the right field. Keen backing up.
- 47:20Backing up and has it.
- 47:22For the third out. Third is nothing across and totaled at the end of three. Cleveland one three all for New York 0 1 0.
- 47:30And before Rizzuto comes along let's pause for station identification.
- 47:37You are tuned to 1460 on the radio dial. This is WOKO Albany, New York.
- 47:47And WOKO clock is now four and one half minutes before the hour of nine. Temperature is 58 degrees.
- 47:56OK Bill. A moment ago I saw that Short had to pull his back foot out of the way from a curveball. Almost hit him.
- 48:03What's this tale you tell about swinging at a pitch that did hit you?
- 48:06Yes that's true. I did swing at a pitch one time and it hit me and I thought I'd be allowed to take my base.
- 48:12But the umpire told me that I was wrong. I thought you swing no matter what happens to the ball it's a strike.
- 48:17Do you remember who threw the curve?
- 48:19No I don't know. Let me see.
- 48:21Want me to help you?
- 48:22Yeah go ahead.
- 48:23Bobby Shantz?
- 48:24Oh man and he's got oh now I remember. Oh that's when little Bobby was in his heyday boy. He was the MVP in the American League pitching for the Philadelphia Athletics.
- 48:34And he still got a good curveball but he had a dandy then.
- 48:39And we've got a dandy of a ball game going on right now between the Indians and the Yankees with Cleveland leading 1-0 here in the top of the fourth.
- 48:47And coming up to Batman who drove in the only run of the ball game Woody Hale with a double of right field driving in Johnny Tempo.
- 48:54Billy Short out on the mound.
- 48:58A left hander ready. Kicks delivers a curveless high ball one.
- 49:04Woody's off to a good start.
- 49:0820 base hits and 64 times at bat. That was his first double of the year. He has a triple and six home and 14 runs batted in.
- 49:17Pitch is inside and low ball two. Two and nothing.
- 49:23On deck Vic Parr.
- 49:36Here's the windup by Short. Curve hit deep to right field but curving far.
- 49:43And Woody Hale has plenty of power.
- 49:48To all fields.
- 49:54Leading the Indians in homers and RBI.
- 50:02Two balls one strike on a power hitting shortstop. Slow curve is on the outside corner. Ball strike two. Two and two the count.
- 50:09Nesta Shiloh calling balls and strikes. Short goes to the Rosenberg.
- 50:16Yogi Barrett deep in left field. Mammoth not too deep in center.
- 50:20Marist deep in right.
- 50:26The pitch is hit on the ground to the right side. Skaren backhands the ball. Nice play. Flips the short. In time to get held.
- 50:34A fine play by Bill Skaren. Takes the base hit away from Woody Hale.
- 50:39And the cheering that went up just moments before Hale hit that ball. Today marks Casey Stengel's 50th year in baseball.
- 50:47Casey broke into pro ball.
- 50:50May 10th 1910.
- 50:53Wow he played center field for Tanki Kia the Northern Association against Jacksonville.
- 50:58Casey had a single, stole a base but his team lost three to two.
- 51:01Matter of fact Stengel batted fourth that day.
- 51:04Ball one outside to Vic Power. Power beat out an infield single.
- 51:08And on a heads up play by Tony Kuback. A fake throwing the first base. Woody Hale rounded third and a hung held up between home and third. He was thrown out.
- 51:21One nothing pitch. Slow curve. He's in there for a called strike one on one. And Vic Power has got a puzzle look on his face.
- 51:27He was walking up on that pitch and just couldn't wait.
- 51:31And the ball floated right by him about felt high.
- 51:38Power just swings the bat back and forth. Real low then crouches.
- 51:44Here's the one one delivery. Another slow curve popped in the air. In short left field. Yogi coming in fast.
- 51:50And makes the catch.
- 51:54Yogi got a good jump on that Texas Laker. Hit right off the end of the bat by Vic Power.
- 52:00And caught it on the dead run. Kuback didn't have a chance for it. Two away.
- 52:04And it brings up Johnny Romano the catcher.
- 52:07Who almost tore Billy Short's right arm off with a vicious line drive back through the box.
- 52:12Short stuck his glove up in self protection and the ball landed right in the pocket. Didn't know he had it. Was hit so hard.
- 52:25Two out. Nobody on. Cleveland one. Yankees nothing. Top of the four.
- 52:30On deck George Strickland.
- 52:33Here's the first pitch to Romano. Fastball inside. Ball one.
- 52:47This is the fourth major league start.
- 52:50For Billy Short and of course his first against the Indians. First time they've faced Cleveland this year.
- 52:56Clear for the ground. A third. McDougall on one hop. Goes to Scaran and that's all for Cleveland.
- 53:04Yankees have been restricted to one hit over the first three innings. Mantle and Maris.
- 53:10And Mooscaran.
- 53:13The power part of the Yankee order. The first pitch. Mantle takes a pitch outside. Ball one.
- 53:20The Indians pick their run up in the first inning.
- 53:27On three hits and a base on balls. A double play sandwiched in between. The next pitch. Up high.
- 53:32Ball two. Mantle has not seen a strike tonight. He walked on four pitches his first time up.
- 53:51Mantle two and all. Play pitch. Curveball he gets it over. Call strike two and one.
- 54:11Alright here's the two one pitch. Mantle takes inside. Ball three. Three and one.
- 54:19About a year ago almost to this day that Jim Perry came in from the bullpen. Pitched a tremendous relief appearance against the Yankees.
- 54:28And that started him on his great freshman year. But then we remember him as a hard throwing right hand and now he's mixing up his space.
- 54:36The pitch is hit high in the air to a straight away center field.
- 54:40Carol Hardy the center fielder moving under it and making the catch. Ball was hit so high that Mantle was all the way down a second before Hardy caught the ball.
- 54:49That's how high he hit it. But that's the wrong part of the park to hit it in and Mickey knows it.
- 54:56Perry has got the Yankee hitters hitting the ball in the air.
- 55:03The only ground ball they have hit was a slow hopper back to the mound. Elston Howard hit that in the second inning. The rest have been fly balls and two strikeouts.
- 55:13Here's Roger Maris. He takes a curveball. Ball one. Roger fouled out to the shortstop in the first inning.
- 55:19He ended up with just the handle of his bat in his hand and the barrel of his bat went over the Yankee dugout and hit a fan but not hard. Just grazed him.
- 55:27In the last row of box seats there's a foul off Maris's leg and that one hurts. Roger is not rubbing but I know it hurts.
- 55:35He hit it right down off his right leg. One and one on Maris.
- 55:47Maris came into the game leading the majors in hitting with a 4.58 average.
- 56:03One one pitch inside ball two. Two and one. Perry is trying to crowd Maris with that fastball and curveball. On deck is Bill Scaran.
- 56:28Here's the two one pitch. It's a little bit low for ball three. Three and one. One out, nobody on. Cleveland leads one nothing. We're in the bottom of the fourth inning.
- 56:51Here's the three one delivery. It's fouled back on the screen and it sticks in the screen.
- 57:01About three rungs from the top. It sticks right up in there.
- 57:10Full count on Maris. Ready for the payoff pitch. Here it is. It's fouled back and in the mezzanine. Fans are having a lot of fun tonight with these foul balls and there have been plenty of them.
- 57:25There's a lot of this crowd here but it would have been a lot bigger had the weather been nicer during the day. A lot of people shied away because of the forecaps. The curve inside ball four he lost them.
- 57:41That's the second walk given up by Jim Perry.
- 57:55Perry had retired nine men in a row since mantle walk in the first inning up till the walk to Maris right now.
- 58:03Here's Bill Scowren who struck out in the first inning. Mick Powell holding first base against Roger Maris on deck Yogi Berra. One out infield and double play depth. Strickland guarding the third base foul line.
- 58:15Pitch to the Mooses. Strike one is swinging a mess at a fast ball. And Perry really blazed that one in.
- 58:23Scowren steps back out of the box. Now Moose back in ready to go. Frank Crissetti coaching at third and Ralph Hogg down at first for the Yankees.
- 58:41Perry sets checks Maris throw to first. Roger back. Rick Powell who is really a fancy fielding first baseman. He can do magic with that first base glove.
- 58:55Again the stretch. Pitch is strike two is swinging a mess and that was a bad high fast ball.
- 59:04Moose again steps back out of the box. Played on by Anesta Shallock. That's her home plate. Now Scowren is back in.
- 59:13Seems a little puzzled by the fact that Perry's still in the fast ball by him.
- 59:20Nothing in two on Scowren. One away.
- 59:26Perry sets again. Pitch curve hit on the ground to third and foul. Backhanded by George Strickland as Perry tried a sidearm scowren with a curve ball but the Moose was ready.
- 59:51Cleveland one Yankees nothing in the bottom of the floor.
- 1:00:02Here's a stretch. Quick throw to first Maris back in plenty of time.
- 1:00:16Pitch to Scowren a high pop to the infield. Vic Powell is coming in the first baseman in foul territory. Makes the catch.
- 1:00:24Vic came almost all the way into home plate to make that catch.
- 1:00:29And Romano realizing how good power is with the glove. Let him have it. Here's Yogi Berra. Yogi fly deep to center in the second inning.
- 1:00:39Two out. And you can see that Perry is pretty fast and as we told you before only one ground ball has been hit by the Yankee batters.
- 1:00:50All the rest have been up in the air.
- 1:01:00Two out. Maris leading off first base.
- 1:01:10Strike a fastball on the inside part of the plate.
- 1:01:14On deck Elton Howard swinging a couple of bats around.
- 1:01:29Here's a stretch by Perry.
- 1:01:34Pitch to Yogi. Popped in the air to the infield. Vic Powell. No now George Strickland the third baseman calling for it near the mound and makes the catch and he almost dropped it.
- 1:01:43Perry was yelling for power to take it but it was on the third base side of the pitcher's box.
- 1:01:49And another pop up by the Yankee batters. Perry blazing that fastball in making them pop it up for the Yankees in the bottom of the fourth.
- 1:01:56No runs. No hits. No Cleveland errors. One man left and a score at the end of four full innings. Cleveland won and the Yankees nothing.
- 1:02:06George Strickland who popped to Richardson in the second inning of the batter.
- 1:02:15Pretty short out of the mound. The left-hander's first pitch is a curve inside ball one.
- 1:02:24Cleveland got all three of their heads off short in the first inning. Two doubles and a single to score their one run.
- 1:02:33Yankees have one base hit. Got a double by the lead off of the Coober. Pitch is a strike call on the outside corner.
- 1:02:41Carol Hardy on deck.
- 1:02:56Here's the one-one delivery. Slow curve is in there. Strike two call.
- 1:03:02You know from here, from the stands that change up curve looks easy to hit but when you're up there at the plate
- 1:03:08expecting a fastball or a fast breaking curve, that seems like it's stuck on your shoulder. You just can't break it away.
- 1:03:19Pitch outside ball two, two and two.
- 1:03:31Nobody out, nobody on here in the top of the fifth. Cleveland leads one-nothing.
- 1:03:39The two-two delivery is lined inside first base. It's going down the corner for extra bases.
- 1:03:46Strickland starts for second and then comes back.
- 1:03:51As Roger Maris really feel of that ball quickly. It was deep in the right field corner inside Skaran and first base.
- 1:03:59And yet Maris got over there and timed the whole Strickland to a long single.
- 1:04:07Hit number four for the Cleveland Indians.
- 1:04:13Strickland at first and Gil McDougal coming over to talk with Billy Shaw.
- 1:04:19And that is Cal Hardy who bounced to Skaran in the second inning.
- 1:04:32Nobody out, Moose holding first base against Strickland. Here's a stretch.
- 1:04:37Inside ball one, Gil McDougal playing in at third.
- 1:04:55Cal Hardy, the right hand hitting center fielder, takes a curve over for a called strike one-on-one.
- 1:05:13JoJo White coaching at third base and Red Crest over at first for the Indians.
- 1:05:20Johnny Temple is on deck but Jim Perry is due to be the next batter. Perry's not a bad hitting pitcher.
- 1:05:30Short set, slow curve hit down to McDougal on one hop. Gil goes to Richardson for one, back to first. Double play.
- 1:05:43And that's as deep a double play as you'll ever see as McDougal's feel of that ball. Just in fair territory.
- 1:05:50When he threw it he was in foul territory. The long throw to Richardson who's quick really at a first nip.
- 1:05:55Hardee who can go down the line.
- 1:05:59That's the second double play of the ball game for New York.
- 1:06:02And here's Jim Perry. Perry flying to center field in the third inning.
- 1:06:14That was the 17th double play of the year for the Yankees. Perry takes a pitch low outside ball one.
- 1:06:29Perry holds that bat right down on the end.
- 1:06:34Curve low, ball two, two and nothing.
- 1:06:43Two balls, no strikes, two outs. Nobody on top of the fifth. Cleveland won, the Yankees nothing.
- 1:06:48First meeting of the year for these two teams.
- 1:06:53They met in spring training but I mean regular season play. There's a fastball just above the knees for a called strike.
- 1:07:17Short ready to wind up.
- 1:07:19Fastball line to left field has a base hit. Yogi feels the ball on two hops and Perry's on with a line single to left.
- 1:07:31That's the fifth hit off short.
- 1:07:34And it brings up Johnny Temple who opened the ball game with a double.
- 1:07:38Just inside third base.
- 1:07:41Came around a score on hell's double down the right field line.
- 1:07:49Temple got away to a slow start with Cleveland but now he's picking up.
- 1:07:55Over 250. He was under 200 for quite a while.
- 1:07:59Perry put the jacket on down at first base. Garland playing in back of the bag. There were two men out.
- 1:08:20On deck Harvey Keynes.
- 1:08:32Nothing in one to count on Chapel.
- 1:08:36Pitch, low ball one one one.
- 1:08:45Fido Francona one of the leading hitters on the Indians with a 317 average not in the lineup tonight.
- 1:08:51I know the Yankees are quite happy about that.
- 1:08:55Last year he ruined them in many a ballgame with some long base hits and timely singles.
- 1:09:01One on one the count. Slow curve hit.
- 1:09:03Just outside of third.
- 1:09:06And the ball boys up with that one on Temple's first double the ball boy tried to feel the ball went right through his legs.
- 1:09:11Had he touched the ball it would have been an automatic double and the umpire at third base Jim Honachek told the youngster don't get too excited or over excited when a ball's in play.
- 1:09:21Never go after it. And of course you can't blame the kid down there.
- 1:09:25Who wouldn't be excited being the ball boy at a big league ballgame.
- 1:09:31One ball two strikes two outs. Jim Perry down at first base.
- 1:09:39Here's a stretch by Billy Short. Fast ball low inside ball two two and two.
- 1:09:47Cleveland leads one nothing here in the top of the fifth.
- 1:09:51Billy Short goes to the Rosenberg and Elston Howard calls time and goes out to the mile.
- 1:10:10Yankees have Barron left Mandlin center and Marison right and here comes Casey Stengel out of the Yankee dugout.
- 1:10:17There could be something bothering Billy Short.
- 1:10:22Yeah.
- 1:10:25He heard his arm.
- 1:10:27The umpire Mr. Schallach signaled and pointed to his left arm to tell the Cleveland bench.
- 1:10:34That there was something wrong with short pitching arm.
- 1:10:38And in the event the Yankees have to bring in a pitcher he will be allowed as much time as needed to warm up ordinarily when a relief pitcher comes in.
- 1:10:45He's allowed just eight pitches.
- 1:10:47And so Casey is walking out to the mound a little more now and it looks like he's going to call for somebody out of the bullpen.
- 1:11:02So Jim Perry takes advantage of the break here and is walking slowly towards the Cleveland Indian dugout as is Johnny Temple.
- 1:11:10Oh is the battle with a 2 2 count on him it's two out Cleveland means one nothing.
- 1:11:15And that would really be a tough break to the Yankee pitching call with whitey Ford having a sore elbow and Bob Charlie who has been out for quite some time.
- 1:11:30And it looks like Bullock Bob might be coming out to the mound just talking about Charlie who has been out quite some time from the last time he pitched.
- 1:11:44So Billy Short.
- 1:11:47Suddenly comes up with a little something wrong with his pitching arm.
- 1:11:52Let's hope it's nothing serious Bob Charlie who has made just one appearance he started at Boston on April the 20th.
- 1:12:01He was a losing pitcher he pitched just two innings gave up four hits and three walks and five runs.
- 1:12:10So Charlie.
- 1:12:14Making his second appearance of the year.
- 1:12:19It's been almost three weeks.
- 1:12:23Since Bob Charlie last pitch in the ballgame and here comes Billy Short off the mound and he gets a wonderful hand from the crowd here.
- 1:12:35He has pitched real good ball in every game that he's been in for the Yankees.
- 1:12:39He's won two and lost one.
- 1:12:42And in the ballgame that he lost it was a heartbreaker down in Baltimore.
- 1:12:47He lost that one two to one and Short drove in the only one of the game for the Yankees that night.
- 1:12:55We can take another look at the scoreboard while we've got the time.
- 1:12:59At the end of two and a half the Red Sox are still leading the White Sox 4 to nothing.
- 1:13:02Early Wendell is having a rough time of it this year looking for his first win of the year.
- 1:13:07He's in there for the White Sox and Vic Wurtz had a bases loaded homer up early in the first inning.
- 1:13:12And then there's Marcel who is yet to lose this year is on the mound for the Red Sox.
- 1:13:17Kansas City is leading Baltimore 10 to nothing at the end of five and a half innings all for Kansas City.
- 1:13:23Wilhelm started Fisher in the fifth for Baltimore.
- 1:13:26Vic Williams home in the fifth with the bases loaded so that's two bases loaded homers already this night.
- 1:13:31And Detroit and Washington nothing nothing at the end of four and a half.
- 1:13:34Morsey against Clevenger.
- 1:13:36Tigers trying to break their losing streak.
- 1:13:40They've lost 10 in a row up till tonight.
- 1:13:43The National League Philadelphia San Francisco and Pittsburgh at Los Angeles start later on.
- 1:13:48Cincinnati and Chicago postpone and that's a fifth straight postpone game for the Cubs at home.
- 1:13:53St. Louis and Milwaukee not scheduled.
- 1:14:11There is a rule here in the rule book for some of you who are interested.
- 1:14:15The count is two and two two balls and two strikes.
- 1:14:17And it says in the rule book that if when pitches are changed and the count is two and two charge that batter and his action to the relief pitcher.
- 1:14:26In other words should Charlie walk this man he would be charged with the walk.
- 1:14:33Or if he should strike him out Charlie will get the strike out.
- 1:14:36Now that also goes at the count as one ball two strikes one ball one strike one ball no strike.
- 1:14:41Or no ball two strikes and no ball in one strike.
- 1:14:49So this batter is Bob Charlie.
- 1:14:53Regardless of the count it's two and two.
- 1:15:02Jim Perry comes out of the Cleveland dugout back to first base.
- 1:15:07And Johnny Temple stepped out and comes into the batter's box.
- 1:15:11Double checking the count with a play on fire.
- 1:15:14That's the child like that's the holds up two fingers on each hand to and to the count.
- 1:15:19Yogi Bear on left field has been talking to some of the fans.
- 1:15:23That's Yogi's favorite past time.
- 1:15:29So it's good to see Charlie back on the mound.
- 1:15:33Perry leading off first two men out one nothing Cleveland leads here in the top of the fifth a stretch by Charlie.
- 1:15:39That is low gets away from Howard but it is next to Charlotte's foot and stays right in McAvely a break for the Yankees.
- 1:15:47And that Perry would easily have gone down to second base had the ball not hit Charlotte's right foot.
- 1:15:53Full count now on Johnny Temple and of course with the pitch being two out Perry will be gone.
- 1:16:22I had a full count on Johnny Temple.
- 1:16:24Here's a stretch by Charlie.
- 1:16:26Perry leading away.
- 1:16:27There he goes.
- 1:16:28The pitch is low outside ball four.
- 1:16:31And that walk is charged up against Bob Charlie.
- 1:16:37Perry down to second temple of first and here's Harvey Keene who has walked twice tonight.
- 1:16:42Has not been up officially.
- 1:16:46Keene remains at a 300 batting average the way he entered the game 15 for 50.
- 1:16:50Three doubles and three runs batted in.
- 1:17:08All right here's a stretch by Charlie.
- 1:17:11The pitch to Keene is a strike ball the fastball right down the middle.
- 1:17:18On deck is Jimmy Pierce.
- 1:17:26Harriet second temple at first.
- 1:17:29Nettle shading Keene over and right center field.
- 1:17:32Maris not too deep and right.
- 1:17:34Yogi straight away and left.
- 1:17:38That's what hit in the ground to back to his left.
- 1:17:50Go back out in front of the ball that was ready to flip it to Bobby Richardson.
- 1:17:54When the ball kicked off his glove between his legs.
- 1:17:57All hands are safe the bases are loaded.
- 1:18:00And here's Jimmy Pierce all who has been up twice and bounce to the shortstop both time.
- 1:18:11That was the first error in the ballgame.
- 1:18:17On deck Woody Hill.
- 1:18:23Charlie will now go to his regular wind up the pitch to Pierce all the pop in the air to short left field.
- 1:18:31Yogi Barrett coming in signaling for it.
- 1:18:38And the funny thing whenever balls hit the left field everybody stands up to see if Yogi is going to catch it.
- 1:18:44But he did and for the Indians in the top of the fifth no runs on one base hit.
- 1:18:50One Yankee era to hit rather.
- 1:18:54One Yankee era and three men left on base.
- 1:19:14In the bottom of the fifth inning Elton Hard Bobby Richardson and Bob Charlie will be coming up to face Jim Perry.
- 1:19:27Perry is being allowed a few extra warm up tosses because of the delay.
- 1:19:37Now he's ready the Indians fire the ball around the infield and Elton Hard who hit back to the box in the second inning the batter.
- 1:19:44Alley is the only Yankee who has hit the ball on the ground in this ballgame.
- 1:19:54One nothing the Indians leading the Yankees here in the bottom of the fifth.
- 1:20:22This is a curve one and a miss right one one one.
- 1:20:38One one delivery hit in the air to short center field.
- 1:20:53Bobby Richardson fly the left field in the second inning a leadoff hitter for the Yankees double that was Tony Kubeck and Jim Perry has stifled the Yankees big bad since then.
- 1:21:14Here's the pitch to Richardson check swing outside ball one.
- 1:21:33There's a ball popped in the infield what he held the shortstop is moving under it and makes the catch.
- 1:21:45And here's Bob Charlie.
- 1:21:57Nobody on Cleveland one Yankees nothing bottom of the fifth.
- 1:22:12First pitch to Charlie is a curve over for a false strike.
- 1:22:26Right inside ball one one one.
- 1:22:44One pitch is a curve over for a false strike to.
- 1:22:56Here's the wind up.
- 1:22:58Well, that's the first strike up up at the Yankees go down one to three nothing across and the bottom of the set and the score of the end of five for Lenny for Cleveland one run by hitting no errors and for the Yankees no runs one hit and one error.
- 1:23:22top of the sixth what he held
- 1:23:24who double the right to drive
- 1:23:26in the only one of the ballgame
- 1:23:28when he drove in Johnny Temple
- 1:23:32that was in the first inning and
- 1:23:33in the fourth inning he bounced
- 1:23:35out to build scar.
- 1:23:37Charlie's first pitch is a ground
- 1:23:39ball.
- 1:23:39Kubeck to his right up with a
- 1:23:41long throw in center for the
- 1:23:43out.
- 1:23:43That was a nice play by Kubeck
- 1:23:46who went deep to his right.
- 1:23:48Came up with a short hop to throw
- 1:23:50out what he held out one away
- 1:23:53has that power beat out an
- 1:23:54infield single and then fly to
- 1:23:55left here.
- 1:24:04Our leads the Indians in batting
- 1:24:10into the game batting three
- 1:24:11thirty eight Johnny Temple who
- 1:24:18doubles the lead off the ball
- 1:24:19game.
- 1:24:20Crease his consecutive game
- 1:24:22hitting three to ten in a row
- 1:24:29first pitch to the car is popped
- 1:24:31in the air right in front of the
- 1:24:32plate.
- 1:24:33Right around near the pitches
- 1:24:34box McDougal under it and make
- 1:24:36the catch right on the mound.
- 1:24:40The ball went up it looked like
- 1:24:41it was going to be right in
- 1:24:41front of all plays but it
- 1:24:44carries.
- 1:24:44So that's two pitches and two out
- 1:24:52Johnny Romano line back to the
- 1:24:54box in the second inning and
- 1:24:55bounce the third and the fourth
- 1:24:56pitch to Romano you have nobody
- 1:25:12on first pitch to Romano with a
- 1:25:16strike.
- 1:25:17So two outside normal fairly
- 1:25:24assault.
- 1:25:25Three pitches this inning to
- 1:25:28men out in the first one a call
- 1:25:29Ramon.
- 1:25:43Up in the air.
- 1:25:45Now it's amazing.
- 1:25:46But it looks like it's going
- 1:25:47back into the stands out of play
- 1:25:49after this.
- 1:25:50And a fan put his coat up and
- 1:25:51it hit in the coat.
- 1:25:52But it didn't stay and look like
- 1:25:54it went right through the
- 1:25:55sleeve.
- 1:25:57Once then and back up third base
- 1:25:58try to catch it with his hat a
- 1:25:59little while ago.
- 1:26:04They don't try and catch him
- 1:26:05with their bare hands.
- 1:26:07Easy way to get a broken finger.
- 1:26:10Nothing and true on Ramon.
- 1:26:12Two out and nobody on.
- 1:26:13Cleveland won Yankees nothing.
- 1:26:14Top of the fifth inning.
- 1:26:33Charlie into the windup.
- 1:26:35There is a little bit high ball
- 1:26:36on one ball to strike one ball
- 1:26:55to strike pitches like three
- 1:26:57playing after a high fastball
- 1:27:00and Charlie really fired that
- 1:27:02high on one which is a good time
- 1:27:04for Cleveland in the top of the
- 1:27:05sixth.
- 1:27:06No runs no hits no Yankee errors
- 1:27:08nobody left the score at the end
- 1:27:10of five and a half innings the
- 1:27:11Yankees one rather Cleveland
- 1:27:13one and the Yankees nothing.
- 1:27:20Did you ever see a great
- 1:27:21baseball player who didn't
- 1:27:22practice course.
- 1:27:24But it takes two things talent
- 1:27:26and practice to make a good ball
- 1:27:27player.
- 1:27:28You know it takes two things to
- 1:27:29make a great beer.
- 1:27:31A lightness is fine but
- 1:27:33lightness alone won't do it.
- 1:27:34To really refresh a beer must
- 1:27:37have lightness plus flavor and
- 1:27:39that's your cue to ask the man
- 1:27:41for the crisp refresher
- 1:27:42Valentine beer.
- 1:27:44You see Valentine proves to more
- 1:27:46people every day that a beer can
- 1:27:48be light and still give you all
- 1:27:50the lager beer flavor you want.
- 1:27:53The fact is Valentine is a light
- 1:27:55beer with two lager flavor and
- 1:27:58it's delicious light lager flavor
- 1:28:00is what makes Valentine beer the
- 1:28:02crisp refresher.
- 1:28:04So if you drink beer for taste
- 1:28:06and refreshment then Mr.
- 1:28:08Valentine's a beer for you.
- 1:28:10Try it.
- 1:28:11See for yourself why
- 1:28:12Valentine is the most popular
- 1:28:13beer from Maine to Florida.
- 1:28:16The largest selling beer in the
- 1:28:17East.
- 1:28:18Treat yourself to the crisp
- 1:28:19refresher right now.
- 1:28:24Report on Billy Short is that he
- 1:28:26felt a slight strain throughout
- 1:28:27the game in his elbow.
- 1:28:29Didn't get any better while he
- 1:28:30was pitching so he decided to
- 1:28:31stop pitching.
- 1:28:32And right now it's not thought
- 1:28:34to be too serious.
- 1:28:37Billy felt that there was
- 1:28:38something not quite right even
- 1:28:40though he was pitching a good
- 1:28:41ballgame and he was wise enough
- 1:28:43to call a halt.
- 1:28:45I Tony Kugel hits the ground
- 1:28:47ball at second base Johnny
- 1:28:48temple up with it on the first
- 1:28:49pitch over the big power one
- 1:28:51away.
- 1:28:54Kugel is the only man to have a
- 1:28:55base hit against Perry so far
- 1:28:57tonight.
- 1:28:59One out is Gil McDougal slide
- 1:29:01to left and fly to right and
- 1:29:02that's only the second ball hit
- 1:29:03on the ground off very in the
- 1:29:05ballgame.
- 1:29:10On deck Mickey Mantle.
- 1:29:25Very takes time to go back to
- 1:29:26the rosin bag.
- 1:29:43Are you having a little trouble
- 1:29:44reading Ramon O'Shaughnessy.
- 1:29:46Now he's got it.
- 1:29:48One one pitch curve low outside
- 1:29:50ball to two one.
- 1:30:05Here's a two one delivery
- 1:30:07strike to swing in the midst at
- 1:30:09a high curve ball.
- 1:30:10Gil walks all around the play.
- 1:30:11That's his usual straw.
- 1:30:20Two balls two strikes one out
- 1:30:21nobody on.
- 1:30:24Leave them one Yankees nothing
- 1:30:25bottom of the sixth.
- 1:30:31Pitch is hit on the ground.
- 1:30:33Why the third backhanded nicely
- 1:30:34by Strickland but the foul sign
- 1:30:37given by third base umpire Jim
- 1:30:39Hunter said.
- 1:30:54Two and two on go.
- 1:31:05Pitch strike three he checked
- 1:31:09his swing but the ball had part
- 1:31:10of the plate.
- 1:31:12He pulled the string on McJugel
- 1:31:16for his fourth strike out of the
- 1:31:17ballgame.
- 1:31:19And here's Mickey Mantle.
- 1:31:21Mickey has walked and fly to
- 1:31:23the bottom of the plate.
- 1:31:35Two men out.
- 1:31:45Pitch is a strike call.
- 1:31:46Mickey had walked out of the
- 1:31:47box didn't ask for time.
- 1:31:49And remember you must ask the
- 1:31:51time Mickey just walked out of
- 1:31:53the box and Harry went right on
- 1:31:55through with the pitcher was a
- 1:31:56curve over the plate and played
- 1:31:58on by and that's the child like
- 1:31:59this strike one and Mickey was
- 1:32:00standing outside the batter's
- 1:32:01box watching it.
- 1:32:07There's a wind up pitch inside
- 1:32:09ball one one a mark.
- 1:32:17Something you very seldom see
- 1:32:20in a batter's step out of the
- 1:32:21box and pitch a pitch and get
- 1:32:24the ball over.
- 1:32:34Harry shakes off one time.
- 1:32:37He's got the one one one pitch
- 1:32:39is popped in the air to left
- 1:32:40field Jimmy Piazol moving in
- 1:32:43under the ball and makes the
- 1:32:46catch for the third out.
- 1:32:50So for New York in the bottom of
- 1:32:52the six no runs no hits no
- 1:32:53Indian errors nobody left in the
- 1:32:54score at the end of six full
- 1:32:55innings Cleveland one in the
- 1:32:57Yankees nothing and Harry has
- 1:33:00retired eight men in a row he
- 1:33:02had retired nine men in a row
- 1:33:04before he walked Roger Maris in
- 1:33:06the fourth inning and since he
- 1:33:07walked Maris he's retired eight
- 1:33:08men in a row.
- 1:33:10So he is really pitching a
- 1:33:12tremendous game for the
- 1:33:13Cleveland Indians.
- 1:33:17Another look at the scoreboard
- 1:33:18in the American League at the
- 1:33:19end of three innings now the
- 1:33:20Red Sox scored another run they
- 1:33:21lead five nothing win against
- 1:33:23Kassel but now in the fourth
- 1:33:27inning Roy Severs home it and
- 1:33:29Al Smith home and with a man on
- 1:33:30so it's a five to three ball
- 1:33:32game and Sullivan has come on to
- 1:33:35relieve Kassel a white doctor
- 1:33:37still batting in the top of the
- 1:33:38fourth with the Red Sox leading
- 1:33:41five to three Vic Wirtz home in
- 1:33:42the first with three on for the
- 1:33:43Red Sox Kansas City leads
- 1:33:45Baltimore 10 nothing at the end
- 1:33:46of seven and a half all against
- 1:33:48Fisher Wilhelm was knocked out
- 1:33:49Dick Williams home in the fifth
- 1:33:51with the bases loaded for Kansas
- 1:33:54City Detroit and Washington
- 1:33:55Aaron a pitcher's battle Mosby
- 1:33:57against Clevinger it's nothing
- 1:33:58nothing at the end of six and in
- 1:34:00the National League Philadelphia
- 1:34:01San Francisco Pittsburgh at Los
- 1:34:03Angeles start later on
- 1:34:04Cincinnati Chicago postponed at
- 1:34:06the fifth straight postponed
- 1:34:07game for the Cubs at home and
- 1:34:09St. Louis and Milwaukee not
- 1:34:11scheduled and we're ready to go
- 1:34:13here in the top of the seventh
- 1:34:14inning and ready to go is Mel
- 1:34:16Allen hello there everybody
- 1:34:19it's the first of the seven one
- 1:34:22to nothing in favor of the
- 1:34:23Indians it's the bottom third of
- 1:34:26the Cleveland order in the
- 1:34:27seventh George Strickland
- 1:34:28leading off Hardy and Perry to
- 1:34:30follow surely in relief of short
- 1:34:32to the wind up and the pitch in
- 1:34:34therefore strike Strickland pop
- 1:34:39the second and single the right
- 1:34:40and the curve is outside for a
- 1:34:53ball they got a sign up there
- 1:34:55short separate in the right as
- 1:34:56in the left elbow one ball one
- 1:35:05strike on Strickland and the
- 1:35:12pitch high and inside two and one
- 1:35:17and the Indians scored in the
- 1:35:18first inning for those of you
- 1:35:20may have tuned in late Johnny
- 1:35:22Temple opened the game with a
- 1:35:23double and with two out what he
- 1:35:26held double him home to back
- 1:35:31open the last of the first of
- 1:35:32the double that's been the only
- 1:35:33hit off Jim Perry Germany's 2 1
- 1:35:38pitch swung on to high fly ball
- 1:35:40and through left center man on
- 1:35:42moods under it makes the catch
- 1:35:45and there's one away now Carol
- 1:35:51Hardy grounded the first and
- 1:35:53grounded the third and the third
- 1:35:56and a double play Jim Perry to
- 1:36:05follow the Yankees overall the
- 1:36:11team had been really hitting the
- 1:36:14ball this was really the first
- 1:36:17game this year that they have
- 1:36:19been to do the pitch swung on and
- 1:36:21popped up to short to back under
- 1:36:23it already running it out catch
- 1:36:26made by Kubek for the second out
- 1:36:29and Jim Perry will get a hand he
- 1:36:31comes out of the dugout because
- 1:36:33they'll beat the Yankees with one
- 1:36:35run up in Boston but nobody has
- 1:36:37pitched as well against them as
- 1:36:39Perry has tonight here's a hand
- 1:36:40for him he's a switch hitter
- 1:36:56against the left hander Billy
- 1:36:57Shorty fly to right and single
- 1:37:00the left now he's batting left
- 1:37:01handed against Charlie takes a
- 1:37:05good cut up there Charlie's
- 1:37:20pitch fastball is low ball one

- 1:51:49Albany New York Elston Howard
- 1:51:56heading seventh in the order
- 1:51:57leads off he hits the box and
- 1:51:58flies to center Richardson on
- 1:52:00deck and Charlie schedule Apollo
- 1:52:04Jim Perry Perry the magnificent
- 1:52:07tonight into the wind up and the
- 1:52:10pitch is in there strike one he
- 1:52:16has used his fastball to good
- 1:52:20advantage but not terribly often
- 1:52:22he has mixed it in with his
- 1:52:23curves and sliders and changes up
- 1:52:26change ups but he may go to the
- 1:52:27fastball a lot now curve is
- 1:52:29low outside for a ball one ball
- 1:52:32one strike the one one pitch
- 1:52:56swung on there's a drive to deep
- 1:52:58left look out that ball is going
- 1:53:00going it is gone high ball game
- 1:53:28Elston Howard picked out a fast
- 1:53:30ball and timed it and sent it on
- 1:53:32a parking line and the left field
- 1:53:35seat for the first hit off Perry
- 1:53:40sent to back let off in the first
- 1:53:41inning and it's one and one
- 1:53:43Howard's fourth homer of the
- 1:53:45year Richardson fly to left and
- 1:53:50pop the short he swings and
- 1:53:51files it off upstairs like one
- 1:53:53board but both by Howard so it's
- 1:54:03one one strike on shortened up
- 1:54:11with Richardson at bat protect
- 1:54:13against the bus possibility now
- 1:54:17period of the wind up delivers
- 1:54:19and it's high and inside and
- 1:54:21Bobby did have a button motion
- 1:54:23he's tried to button had to
- 1:54:24really get out of there to get
- 1:54:25a board being hit one ball one
- 1:54:29strike the one one pitch swung
- 1:54:41on line a great shot by
- 1:54:43Strickland he leaps and grabs
- 1:54:44the ball of a line drive hit by
- 1:54:46Bobby Richardson George
- 1:54:51Strickland reached as high as
- 1:54:53you could go to grab that one
- 1:54:55just as what he held it off the
- 1:54:57bat of scour in the seventh
- 1:54:58inning Bob Curley is due to bat
- 1:55:04and I believe he'll be coming
- 1:55:06out tremendous play by George
- 1:55:21Strickland to take the base set
- 1:55:22away from Richardson and that
- 1:55:23would have been a double at
- 1:55:25least because Richardson rather
- 1:55:28Strickland was playing close to
- 1:55:30the line play was all the better
- 1:55:34but remember he was playing in
- 1:55:37an anticipation of a possible
- 1:55:39month they delivered it early
- 1:55:41swung on and missed strike one
- 1:55:43curbing to back on deck
- 1:55:57pitch swung on and missed strike
- 1:55:59two another curve
- 1:56:08no balls two strikes
- 1:56:12and the delivery swung on and
- 1:56:14fouled off to the right of the
- 1:56:15plate out of play and the lower
- 1:56:16stands the Indians in the
- 1:56:21ninth inning
- 1:56:26held and power and Romano do
- 1:56:29up here's the pitch and it's
- 1:56:31inside for a ball
- 1:56:42a one to count on Charlie one
- 1:56:43away one run in the eighth one
- 1:56:45won the score very pitch swung on
- 1:56:48and fouled off to the right of
- 1:57:03one ball two strikes in comes the
- 1:57:05next pitch and it's inside for
- 1:57:07ball to two to
- 1:57:24here's the two to deliberate
- 1:57:26swung on lined in the left and
- 1:57:28there's all and it's over and
- 1:57:31there goes Kelly heading for
- 1:57:33the two and he'll hold up with
- 1:57:37two bases Jimmy Pearsall
- 1:57:40misjudged it the ball was hit
- 1:57:43hard he started in and then had
- 1:57:45to go back and it sailed by and
- 1:57:46for a double
- 1:57:55Jimmy Pearsall who is generally
- 1:57:58a you know a real top flight
- 1:58:01fielder didn't pick it up the
- 1:58:03ball was a liner and Jimmy
- 1:58:05started in on it and then when
- 1:58:07he started to go back a little
- 1:58:08late
- 1:58:15for most players that would have
- 1:58:18been a triple
- 1:58:25so Charlie now is on second the
- 1:58:27batter is too bad to double the
- 1:58:29right line to right center and
- 1:58:31grounded the second
- 1:58:34Romano goes out to talk to Perry
- 1:59:02one away in the eight early on
- 1:59:05second to back it back
- 1:59:18very getting a sign from Romano
- 1:59:23into the stretch and the pitch
- 1:59:27ball one outside
- 1:59:32about a half speed pitch
- 1:59:49Charlie leading away from second
- 1:59:51not too big a lead and the pitch
- 1:59:53swung on line drive basically
- 1:59:55the left center but Charlie will
- 1:59:57not go I don't believe here's a
- 1:59:59throw he's held at third and in
- 2:00:01the second goes to back
- 2:00:10go back singles to left and take
- 2:00:13second on the throw to the plate
- 2:00:17Charlie didn't have much of a
- 2:00:18lead as we were telling you and
- 2:00:22hard line at left center
- 2:00:23and over got the ball and fired
- 2:00:25high to the plate enabling
- 2:00:27Kubek to go to second out of the
- 2:00:30dugout now comes Joe Gordon
- 2:00:40the flash goes out to talk to Jim
- 2:00:42Perry and we'll see whether or not
- 2:00:45he makes a change
- 2:01:01Gordon out the mound with Romano
- 2:01:02and Perry
- 2:01:11and the signal goes out for the
- 2:01:13relief pitcher left handed
- 2:01:20Charlie comes on into the dugout
- 2:01:22to rest awhile
- 2:01:50well we have to wait and see
- 2:01:55could be Dick could be Dick
- 2:01:56Stigman who is it? No. Dick
- 2:02:00Stigman I think
- 2:02:08Dick Stigman who was with San
- 2:02:10Diego last year worked in forty
- 2:02:12five games
- 2:02:16six foot three two hundred pounder
- 2:02:18from a town called Nimrod in
- 2:02:20Minnesota
- 2:02:23this is his fifth appearance and
- 2:02:25he's won one and lost one
- 2:02:27relieved twice and started twice
- 2:02:29beat Kansas City three to one and
- 2:02:31a start May 1st and lost to
- 2:02:34Baltimore in his last start nine
- 2:02:35two
- 2:02:38Jim Perry will soon depart and
- 2:02:40fans will give him a nice hand
- 2:02:42he pitched tremendous ball up to
- 2:02:44the center of the inning
- 2:02:48Howard's home run sort of shook
- 2:02:50him a little
- 2:02:52and the misjudgment of Charlie's
- 2:02:54liner got him into further trouble
- 2:03:12the fans respond with a warm
- 2:03:15round of applause for Jim Perry
- 2:03:19who put on quite a show tonight
- 2:03:25in seven and one third innings
- 2:03:28pitching he allowed four hits
- 2:03:30three in this inning
- 2:03:32walked two struck out four so far
- 2:03:34just been charged with one run
- 2:03:38got into a little trouble after
- 2:03:40that and then a solid homer
- 2:03:43four hundred foot plus drive in
- 2:03:44the left field seats to open the
- 2:03:46eighth for the second hit and the
- 2:03:47person's the first inning
- 2:03:51Richardson was robbed of at least
- 2:03:53a double on a tremendous play by
- 2:03:55Strickland and then Charlie's
- 2:03:57liner apparently in his judge by
- 2:03:59first all went for a double
- 2:04:04Bob didn't take too much of a
- 2:04:05lead off second and on the base
- 2:04:07hit that followed by Kubek into
- 2:04:08the center he only got as far as
- 2:04:10third but Curse all
- 2:04:14racing into the gap and making a
- 2:04:16fine throw to the plate on which
- 2:04:18Kubek
- 2:04:20raced the second
- 2:04:22Dick Stigman a left hander
- 2:04:26this is the case if this is a case
- 2:04:28of where a manager doesn't play it
- 2:04:30by the book and a lot of managers
- 2:04:34don't go by the book exactly
- 2:04:37as they do all the time but
- 2:04:39Stigman is a fellow who's got
- 2:04:40good curve good slider and keeps
- 2:04:43the ball low and that's what
- 2:04:45they're trying to do get somebody
- 2:04:46here now make them hit on the
- 2:04:47ground McDougall fly into left
- 2:04:50and right and take a third strike
- 2:05:00Charlie on third
- 2:05:02Kubek on second one out
- 2:05:08infield in for play at the plate
- 2:05:09to wind up by the left hander in
- 2:05:11the pitch in there for strike
- 2:05:27now the pitch just outside for a
- 2:05:29ball one and one Stigman gives you
- 2:05:32a lot of motion out there
- 2:05:37and big fella six three 200 pounds
- 2:05:4224 years old
- 2:05:44infield in
- 2:05:47Charlie leads off third Kubek off
- 2:05:49second one out the left hander to
- 2:05:51the wind up and the pitch McDougall
- 2:05:53swings and misses sinker ball one
- 2:05:55and two
- 2:06:10one and two the count on McDougall
- 2:06:14runners on second and third relief
- 2:06:18pitcher Dick Stigman swings to the
- 2:06:21wind up around comes the left arm the
- 2:06:22pitch swung on and missed strike
- 2:06:25three
- 2:06:27Stigman strikes out McDougall
- 2:06:33two away now and the batter is
- 2:06:36Mantle who walks fly to center and
- 2:06:38fly to left
- 2:06:55two men down
- 2:07:08two men away
- 2:07:10Stigman into the wind up here's the
- 2:07:12pitch to Mantle swung on and missed
- 2:07:14like one we've got a tremendous
- 2:07:16thinker throws a ball up there and it
- 2:07:19just think

- 2:07:44one
- 2:07:49we're a lot about Stigman and spring
- 2:07:51training engines trained in Arizona
- 2:07:52first time we've seen him work
- 2:07:55gives you a big motion
- 2:08:00throw some wicked breaking stuff out

- 2:11:37swung on foul back upstairs like to one
- 2:11:40and two
- 2:11:42it's been an odd inning at that Elston
- 2:11:44Howard open the inning with a homer to
- 2:11:46tie the score and since then the Yankees
- 2:11:47have been trying to go ahead they got
- 2:11:51to carry out

- 2:13:28what he in there strike one
- 2:13:31big power on Beck and Romano to follow
- 2:13:36so we got another fingernail biter as we
- 2:13:38had on Sunday for a while
- 2:13:47Charlie took over for short in the fifth
- 2:13:49inning to out his curveball is fouled
- 2:13:52down the third baseline strike two short

- 2:14:01had to retire
- 2:14:09no balls two strikes
- 2:14:21what he held clean up man right hand

- 2:15:21screen he's getting under it and he's
- 2:15:24got it
- 2:15:27held bowels out to Howard
- 2:15:34now big power and singled in the first
- 2:15:37inning flying to left and the fourth and
- 2:15:41popped out the third in the sixth
- 2:16:02the Tigers finally broke their losing
- 2:16:04streak they wanted one to nothing they
- 2:16:06pitched a big power swung on and bounder
- 2:16:09hit out the second Richardson up with it
- 2:16:11throws the sky on two away
- 2:16:16now Johnny Romano he lined back to the
- 2:16:20pitcher grounded the third struck out
- 2:16:25first of the ninth inning a 1-1 ballgame
- 2:16:45right hand hitter
- 2:16:48Charlie's delivery fastball strike call
- 2:16:55no balls one strike
- 2:17:00Romano has
- 2:17:04better than average power
- 2:17:07Charlie's delivery curve and it's a little
- 2:17:10high one and one one ball one strike
- 2:17:23one one count on Romano
- 2:17:28journey throws fastball swung on to high
- 2:17:31fly to deep left yogi waiting for it back
- 2:17:34out there and yogi's got it
- 2:17:38retired in the night no runs no hits no
- 2:17:41errors no one left on the end of eight
- 2:17:43and a half innings it's one and one and
- 2:17:47in the last of the night Yankees will
- 2:17:49have scowl and Barra and Howard coming up
- 2:17:54and I hope you've got some Valentine
- 2:17:56beer coming up an exciting ballgame
- 2:17:59yoga getting a hand he comes in let's
- 2:18:03have a quick look at the lighter side of
- 2:18:04sports how about trying these on for
- 2:18:08size the golfer playing a hundred degree
- 2:18:10heat hit a ball that traveled all of 75
- 2:18:12yards before it suddenly exploded in mid
- 2:18:14air and started a grass fire man it was
- 2:18:17dry and then there was a famous
- 2:18:19university that set a new high in the
- 2:18:21care of its athletes that ensured the
- 2:18:23thumb of each member of its tiddly
- 2:18:24Winx team for $700 got a hand it to him
- 2:18:28well let's turn from the lighter side of
- 2:18:31sports to the lighter side of beer and
- 2:18:33that means Valentine of course
- 2:18:35Valentine is the light beer with true
- 2:18:38log of flavor lightness and log of beer
- 2:18:41flavor two good reasons why folks from
- 2:18:43Maine to Florida have made Valentine the
- 2:18:46largest selling beer in the East how
- 2:18:48about you refresh with a crisp
- 2:18:51picture soon
- 2:19:03Nick Stigman the six foot three left
- 2:19:06hander who came in and put the fire out
- 2:19:10before it could
- 2:19:14do any damage after Howard Homer
- 2:19:16made Paul Perry to tie the score
- 2:19:19you have a rough spot for him to be in
- 2:19:21bases loaded and three and two on the
- 2:19:23batter he's ready to pitch the scour
- 2:19:26and struck out foul of the catcher and
- 2:19:28lined to short in comes the pitch
- 2:19:31swung on grounded out to short and it
- 2:19:33is grabbed by held the throw in time
- 2:19:38one away
- 2:19:41Yogi Barrow be coming up he flied to
- 2:19:43right center the third and grounded the
- 2:19:45second
- 2:20:11there digs in Dick Stigman swings to the
- 2:20:15wind up around comes the left arm the
- 2:20:17pitch is high ball one
- 2:20:30the one nothing pitch on its way to
- 2:20:32Yogi in their strike one one and one
- 2:20:47the one one pitch to Barrow swung on
- 2:20:50play fly ball in the short center temple
- 2:20:52going out and he's got it
- 2:20:55two away and here's Elston Howard who
- 2:20:59Homer to keep the Yankees in the ball
- 2:21:01and he's got him the eighth inning
- 2:21:09he had hit to the box and fly to center
- 2:21:11and let off in the eighth with a line
- 2:21:13drive Homer into the left field stand
- 2:21:16two down last to the ninth one and one
- 2:21:19the score
- 2:21:30Dick Stigman to the wind up around comes
- 2:21:32the left arm and the pitch is in their
- 2:21:34strike one fastball
- 2:21:46the next delivery swung on lined out in
- 2:21:49the right center for a base hit and
- 2:21:51Howard turned first back headed nicely by
- 2:21:54Keane the four in the second Howard's in
- 2:21:56there with a double
- 2:22:11now they are going to put Richardson on
- 2:22:13and that's the Charlie I believe
- 2:22:18Bobby Richardson who fly to left pop
- 2:22:20short in line the third I believe will
- 2:22:26be put on first base
- 2:22:33you'll be intentionally fast ball one
- 2:22:41and the second one
- 2:22:47Bobby's or a team they could reach the
- 2:22:50ball and the third one
- 2:22:56now the fourth one so Richardson is
- 2:22:59purposely fast
- 2:23:02and Casey and I have to decide whether he
- 2:23:04wants to leave turn in there or not
- 2:23:08been pitching well
- 2:23:11with two out he may make a move we'll
- 2:23:17see
- 2:23:20the Lopez is going to hit for him
- 2:23:48all the game situation is forced Casey
- 2:23:50to send up a pinch hitter with two out
- 2:23:54for Charlie who in relief of short
- 2:23:58after short stain his elbow work for and
- 2:24:01one third innings of hitless ball
- 2:24:05one struck out one and didn't allow any
- 2:24:07runs
- 2:24:09and now Ken Hunt's going into run for
- 2:24:11Howard Howard getting a hand he leaves
- 2:24:24Ken Hunt running for Howard
- 2:24:35two outs in the last of the night on
- 2:24:37second Richardson on first one and one
- 2:24:40the score
- 2:24:44Dick Stigman to the stretch the pitch in
- 2:24:47there for a strike
- 2:25:02no balls one strike two down
- 2:25:06left hander again to the stretch here's
- 2:25:08the pitch swung on grounded down first
- 2:25:10and a throw is in time to first base to
- 2:25:14the pitcher who covers and the side
- 2:25:16retires
- 2:25:18Lopez rounded a big power deep at first
- 2:25:21Stigman got over and took the throw to
- 2:25:24retire the side no runs one hit no errors
- 2:25:29and two left on Yogi Berra will switch
- 2:25:32from left field to the plate and Ryan
- 2:25:35Duran is coming in to pitch
- 2:25:45for those of you who tuned in late in
- 2:25:47the first inning temple double keen
- 2:25:50walk first all wrapped into a double
- 2:25:52play temple going to third scored on
- 2:25:54held double and on my last of the first
- 2:25:58two back open with a double and that's
- 2:26:00the last hit the Yankees got until the
- 2:26:03eighth inning when Howard Homer the
- 2:26:05Yankees then loaded the bases Stigman
- 2:26:08having a relieved Harry and Stigman got
- 2:26:16the side out or the Yankees having a
- 2:26:20chance of the bases loaded in the three
- 2:26:21to count on Maris before he popped up in
- 2:26:23the inning and then of course the last
- 2:26:25of the ninth situation where the
- 2:26:27winning run was on second to us and
- 2:26:30Stigman kept that from coming home while
- 2:26:33what Ryan Duran loosens up we'll pause
- 2:26:36for station identification you are tuned
- 2:26:39to 1460 on the radio dial this is WOK
- 2:26:42Oh Albany New York the time in five
- 2:26:45seconds 1045 present temperature is 58
- 2:26:50degrees now on the 10th inning Joe
- 2:27:00Gordon is making his move in the switch
- 2:27:05department Bob Hale will bat for George
- 2:27:10Strickland the left-hand batter Hale
- 2:27:12hitting for Strickland he's a guy with
- 2:27:16power and then you're going to have a
- 2:27:20big rookie Walt Bond a six foot six
- 2:27:22left-hand batter coming up to hit for
- 2:27:24Carol Hardy
- 2:27:39Bob Hale who's two for six
- 2:27:43as the power hitters though as well
- 2:27:46bond Ryan Duran coming on in the pen
- 2:27:54Bob Turley who took over for short in
- 2:27:57the fifth with two outs showed his best
- 2:28:00form of the year but Casey had to take
- 2:28:05him out for the pinch hitter with a
- 2:28:07possibility of getting a hit to win the
- 2:28:11game the last of the night was not
- 2:28:13forthcoming and so in the tenth and
- 2:28:15here's Bob Hale up Ryan Duran to the
- 2:28:18wind up and the pitch swung on hit foul
- 2:28:22down the left field line out of play
- 2:28:24strike one
- 2:28:32during six the relief appearance last
- 2:28:35worked against Kansas City on Friday
- 2:28:38worked an inning and two-thirds and was
- 2:28:40tied with a victory
- 2:28:45nothing in one
- 2:28:51urine into the wind up the pitch to hail
- 2:28:54swung on line out the left and got up
- 2:28:57and makes the catch
- 2:29:04flipped on the grass went down got up
- 2:29:06and made the catch one away a line at
- 2:29:09the left now here is Walt Bond the
- 2:29:13rookie you've heard so much about
- 2:29:16Walter Bond six feet six he made the
- 2:29:20jump from writing to this club with
- 2:29:22some sensational spring hitting
- 2:29:26he's had 13 for 51 including three
- 2:29:30homers and 12 runs batted in
- 2:29:33a menacing figure at the plate for
- 2:29:36that big bad the heaviest in the league
- 2:29:40he can whip it during to the wind up
- 2:29:44and the pitch swung on in this back
- 2:29:47line or he took a cut at a real good
- 2:29:50fastball
- 2:29:56if he ever makes connection he's going
- 2:29:58to really send that one soaring in
- 2:30:00orbit
