1:39
Speaker 4: to get ready for the upcoming mouth in Hear football
1:42
Speaker 4: season coming up. On the show, we had to move
1:45
Speaker 4: some things around a little bit of riscently. We had
1:46
Speaker 4: the superintendent of schools in Knawk County schedule on the
1:48
Speaker 4: show today, but she had a sudden meeting she had
1:51
Speaker 4: to get to completely understandable. So I think she's going
1:53
Speaker 4: to be on the show tomorrow. I say I think
1:55
Speaker 4: because I'm not going to be here tomorrow. Deal Cooper
1:57
Speaker 4: will be doing the show for me on Wednesday, Thursday
2:00
Speaker 4: and Friday. So we had to move the superintendent to
2:04
Speaker 4: one of those shows. I think she's going to try
2:05
Speaker 4: to get her on the show tomorrow to talk about
2:09
Speaker 4: not only the first day of school for students in
2:11
Speaker 4: Kanawk County, which is coming up later this week, but
2:13
Speaker 4: also the cell phone band which was passed by the
2:15
Speaker 4: Kenaw County Board of Education and put into place last night.
2:19
Speaker 4: Coop and Superintendent Potter will talk about that a little
2:22
Speaker 4: bit later on in the week on this show. Though today,
2:25
Speaker 4: as you've been hearing if you've been listening to the
2:27
Speaker 4: Morning News, today is the fortieth anniversary West Virginia Metro News.
2:32
Speaker 4: Jeff Jenkins is going to join us a little bit
2:33
Speaker 4: later on to talk about that. We get special things
2:36
Speaker 4: going on throughout the day. Chris Lawrence in our news
2:38
Speaker 4: department just put together an absolutely stunning piece of audio
2:44
Speaker 4: going back to the beginning days and throughout the years
2:46
Speaker 4: of Metro News. So we're going to listen in on that.
2:49
Speaker 4: On the talk line, those guys are going to talk
2:51
Speaker 4: about a Dale Miller is going to be on with
2:55
Speaker 4: them today and on midday we're also going to talk
2:57
Speaker 4: about it with, among other folks, George Manahan, who was
3:00
Speaker 4: the original Capital He was the original Brad mclhanney. He
3:03
Speaker 4: was the Capitol correspondent for Metro News. He's going to
3:06
Speaker 4: join us on midday and as well. So got plenty
3:08
Speaker 4: to get to, but always time for your calls and text.
3:10
Speaker 4: Big Ley Pigli Wiggly hotline three zero four three four
3:12
Speaker 4: five fifty eight fifty eight. Tony of the Taylor Text
3:15
Speaker 4: three zero four nine three five five zero zero. Let's
3:18
Speaker 4: talk about something I love talking about, and that's food.
3:21
Speaker 4: We're gonna talk about a little biscuits and gravy right now.
3:24
Speaker 4: I know it's a long way off because the event
3:25
Speaker 4: we're going to tell you that's not tool. We're all
3:28
Speaker 4: bundled up and fall. But now's the time that the
3:30
Speaker 4: planning is going into this big biscuits and gravy competition
3:33
Speaker 4: over at Capitol markt. Joanna Romeo joins us. Joanna, Welcome
3:36
Speaker 4: to the show. Hi, good morning, and the great PG.
3:40
Speaker 4: Paul Crik goes with us as well. How you doing?
3:42
Speaker 4: Are you just one of those people that everybody knows,
3:44
Speaker 4: like by their first name or initials. You just say PG,
3:46
Speaker 4: and everybody knows who you are pretty much.
3:48
Speaker 6: It gets a little annoying too, because it's very hard
3:53
Speaker 6: for me to remember everybody, but I hear I hear
3:56
Speaker 6: PJPG constantly and it comes from like all directions.
4:01
Speaker 4: Yeah, and you're the for those who may not know you,
4:04
Speaker 4: For the five people out there who may not know
4:05
Speaker 4: who you are, explain what restaurants you're affiliated with here in.
4:09
Speaker 6: Charleston, Sam's Uptown Cafe, the Red Carpet Lounge, and Laporte Cafe.
4:14
Speaker 4: Okay, and now how's Laporte going. That's that's a former
4:16
Speaker 4: Tricky Fish location.
4:18
Speaker 6: Yes, doing great?
4:18
Speaker 4: Okay, Well, it was one of my favorite places before.
4:21
Speaker 4: And of course all your places are great. I was
4:22
Speaker 4: at the Red Carpet on Saturday for Kegs for k
4:25
Speaker 4: Nines and it's and of course Sam's is killer as well.
4:30
Speaker 7: Yeah.
4:30
Speaker 6: Sam's is celebrating her thirty year anniversary next week.
4:33
Speaker 4: I have been known to dine from time to time.
4:36
Speaker 4: Of course, with the Metro News mid day show, I
4:38
Speaker 4: don't get a whole lot of dining these days out
4:39
Speaker 4: because I'm on the air from noon to three. But
4:42
Speaker 4: I have been known to be in the company in
4:43
Speaker 4: the presence of one Tony the Taylor there frequently, not
4:48
Speaker 4: because I want to, but because he frequently buys but
4:51
Speaker 4: as much money as I spend in his store than
4:53
Speaker 4: he owes me. Right, absolutely, all right, let's talk his
4:56
Speaker 4: biscuits and gravy. Let's talk about you had an event,
4:58
Speaker 4: joy An. I'm gonna start with you, and we're gonna
5:00
Speaker 4: give a little history about an event that started last year.
5:02
Speaker 4: Tell us what we got going on.
5:04
Speaker 8: Yeah, So our Biscuit and Gravy is scheduled at the
5:06
Speaker 8: Capital Market this year for November eighth.
5:08
Speaker 3: Last year is a great hit.
5:09
Speaker 8: We had restaurants and individuals compete for it, and so
5:13
Speaker 8: this year we're going to be doing experts versus wannabes
5:16
Speaker 8: and then they can do biscuits and.
5:17
Speaker 3: Gravy or we'll have the other category to be judging
5:20
Speaker 3: too this.
5:20
Speaker 4: Year, all right, And I like that experts and wannabes. Yes, Yeah,
5:24
Speaker 4: it was a great event last year, and I was
5:26
Speaker 4: happy that our station's got to take part in it.
5:28
Speaker 4: I was over there. Rob Real from assister station ninety
5:31
Speaker 4: six one KWS was there and as somebody who is
5:34
Speaker 4: a food person, PG talk about your involvement in this
5:38
Speaker 4: and why is it the biscuits and gravy or so popular.
5:42
Speaker 6: Where I come from?
5:43
Speaker 4: It's not now where are you from upstate New York, Okay?
5:47
Speaker 6: And I was really surprised when I moved down here
5:49
Speaker 6: and got into the food business down here. How popular
5:53
Speaker 6: biscuits and gravy is down to the South.
5:57
Speaker 4: It's an apple Achian slash Southern thing. I mean, it's
6:00
Speaker 4: very very popular here. And I know it's Sam's that
6:03
Speaker 4: you do some pretty good biscuits and gravy there for
6:06
Speaker 4: your brunch, right.
6:07
Speaker 6: We make biscuits and gravy a couple times a month
6:11
Speaker 6: whenever we can. It is a very popular rite among
6:14
Speaker 6: our brunch menu.
6:14
Speaker 4: And again, this event's not until November, but we're telling
6:18
Speaker 4: people now to put it on your calendar. And because
6:21
Speaker 4: in order to pull this thing off, you need some
6:24
Speaker 4: sponsors and things of that nature. Tell us who you're
6:27
Speaker 4: raising money.
6:27
Speaker 3: For, Joanna, Yes, so we're raising money for South Ridcht Church.
6:31
Speaker 3: So we help out.
6:32
Speaker 8: We want to be the community that the church or
6:34
Speaker 8: the church that the community can't live without.
6:36
Speaker 3: And we just do and give so much back.
6:38
Speaker 8: So we like help the UC football team for all
6:40
Speaker 8: their home games, like part of this money will help
6:42
Speaker 8: contribute toward that. We feed the players and their families
6:46
Speaker 8: for every home game and make treat bags for away games.
6:48
Speaker 8: We help Knaw County kids and families around Christmas about
6:51
Speaker 8: one hundred and twenty five families for the whole month,
6:54
Speaker 8: providing food for them for the holiday.
6:55
Speaker 4: Now and again it is sponsored by the South Ridge Church,
6:58
Speaker 4: but we I mean, you guys do great work out there,
7:01
Speaker 4: but this goes well beyond a church. This is not
7:03
Speaker 4: just things going back into the church. This is things
7:05
Speaker 4: that are going help out to help these people in
7:08
Speaker 4: the community, whether they go to the church or not.
7:10
Speaker 4: That's what we're talking about.
7:11
Speaker 3: Yes, exactly.
7:12
Speaker 8: So, so if you want to get involved as a sponsor,
7:14
Speaker 8: we have like the Morning Month sponsor, Breakfast sponsor to
7:18
Speaker 8: get involved in COVID insurance is already in, and tutors
7:21
Speaker 8: and Geno's or help sponsoring our event already too.
7:24
Speaker 4: Well, let's go back to last year. Was it as
7:27
Speaker 4: a big a success last year as you thought it
7:29
Speaker 4: would be, Because to me, when you and I first
7:31
Speaker 4: talked about it and I had you on the show
7:33
Speaker 4: and you reached out to me about it, I thought, well,
7:36
Speaker 4: there's so many other things going on. Competitions, you know,
7:39
Speaker 4: you've got to you know, there's chili competitions and wing
7:43
Speaker 4: competitions and rib fests, and I thought, well, I don't
7:45
Speaker 4: know how popular this is going to be. I was
7:47
Speaker 4: sadly mistaken. It was very popular.
7:50
Speaker 8: Yes, so well, everybody was excited because you can go
7:52
Speaker 8: with family, friends, kids, all ages can come and just
7:54
Speaker 8: have a great time, enjoy the community and see others
7:57
Speaker 8: while you're there too.
7:58
Speaker 4: And again it's a capital market, which is one of
8:00
Speaker 4: the finer places to have it in Charleston. And the
8:03
Speaker 4: turnout last year, Joanna was awesome and we had a
8:05
Speaker 4: lot of people there.
8:06
Speaker 8: Yeah, we had almost three hundred and Jim Strawn was
8:10
Speaker 8: our MC and DJ EJ and he'll be back again
8:12
Speaker 8: this year, both of those guys to help us to
8:14
Speaker 8: make the event more fun.
8:15
Speaker 4: Of course, our stations are going to be involved as well,
8:17
Speaker 4: and we're looking forward to to checking it out. And
8:20
Speaker 4: the thing about about biscuits and gravy is there are
8:24
Speaker 4: I mean, seems so simple, but there are so many
8:27
Speaker 4: different varieties and I had some big and I served
8:30
Speaker 4: as a judge last year. I'm hoping I get a
8:32
Speaker 4: call back this year. There are so many different ways
8:36
Speaker 4: to make it and even the appearance of it doesn't
8:39
Speaker 4: always look the same. I mean grandma's looked one way,
8:41
Speaker 4: and then moms may look a little bit different. Restaurants
8:44
Speaker 4: look a little bit. There's a lot of different ways
8:45
Speaker 4: to make biscuits.
8:46
Speaker 3: And gravy there is, and sausage is a way to go.
8:49
Speaker 4: Yeah, exactly what about you? I mean you said pg up.
8:52
Speaker 4: Being from upstate New York, this was not really your
8:54
Speaker 4: thing until you got down here. What makes good biscuits
8:56
Speaker 4: and gravy in your opinion?
8:59
Speaker 6: Well, really good sausage for sure. I use a heavy cream,
9:04
Speaker 6: a lot lot of pepper. Uh, you know it's it's
9:09
Speaker 6: just kind of regional. I think you know mine is
9:13
Speaker 6: very is not traditional. I don't think I wouldn't call
9:15
Speaker 6: it traditional, but it definitely people that do like traditional
9:20
Speaker 6: biscuits and gravy are very fond of it.
9:22
Speaker 4: Now you say it's not traditional. What makes it non
9:25
Speaker 4: not traditional?
9:26
Speaker 6: It's very heavily seasoned with.
9:31
Speaker 4: Stuff stuff that I don't want to say, No, I
9:34
Speaker 4: get it, but but that's what that's what makes it
9:36
Speaker 4: is the is the secret saucer to speak absolutely this
9:39
Speaker 4: you go in now, I like it. I like it
9:41
Speaker 4: very very spicy. And I get to give a good
9:44
Speaker 4: shout out to one of my good friends. Everybody knows her,
9:46
Speaker 4: and everybody knows her gravy Patro patriv sale here and
9:49
Speaker 4: Charleston who who does some of the best Hungarian gravy
9:52
Speaker 4: and it will it's not for the faint of heart,
9:55
Speaker 4: but it's but it's very good. And I saw and
9:57
Speaker 4: I and I sampled some gravyes last year doing event
10:00
Speaker 4: that were like that, but then also sampled some that
10:02
Speaker 4: were just as mild as they can be. They don't
10:03
Speaker 4: necessarily have to be spicy in my opinions, like chili
10:07
Speaker 4: pg good chili does not have to be spicy. I
10:11
Speaker 4: prefer it spicy, but good chili does not have to
10:13
Speaker 4: be spicy. I make all my stuff spicy. Well that's
10:16
Speaker 4: the way I like it. I mean, I always jokeing
10:18
Speaker 4: in my house if you don't like spice, do you
10:20
Speaker 4: won't like eating at mine? In my wife's house, because
10:23
Speaker 4: everything we cook is spicy.
10:25
Speaker 6: Our our gravy recipe actually is kind of an offshoot
10:28
Speaker 6: of Patriots because she used to make it for us
10:31
Speaker 6: for brunch way back in the day.
10:35
Speaker 4: Tex said, I had no clue that Sam's had biscuits
10:37
Speaker 4: and gravy. Uh, I think they're getting Sam's uptown Cafe
10:42
Speaker 4: mixed up with Sam's Club because that but do you
10:46
Speaker 4: sell memberships in Sam's Uptown Cafe.
10:48
Speaker 6: I'll sell anything.
10:50
Speaker 4: We'll sell Joanna if we think they get something for
10:52
Speaker 4: But no, this is not This is Sam's Uptown Cafe
10:56
Speaker 4: that we're talking about, not Sam's Club, which is one
10:58
Speaker 4: of the Sam's Uptown Cafe is one of the premiere
11:01
Speaker 4: eating establishments here in Charleston. So again, the event will
11:05
Speaker 4: be November the eighth. November the eighth, and where can
11:08
Speaker 4: people learn more about it?
11:10
Speaker 8: So they can either reach out to me through my
11:14
Speaker 8: phone number six O six four six five ten eighty eight,
11:17
Speaker 8: or we're getting our Facebook updated, so our website, it's
11:22
Speaker 8: going to be at https at src dot church center
11:27
Speaker 8: dot com. Hashtags registrations slash event, slash three zero five
11:32
Speaker 8: three four eight three.
11:33
Speaker 4: Okay, that's a lot of stuff, So I'll tell you
11:35
Speaker 4: what we'll do. We'll we'll get it out there when
11:37
Speaker 4: we get a little bit closer. The reason I wanted
11:39
Speaker 4: to have you guys on here today was to talk
11:41
Speaker 4: about the event.
11:41
Speaker 7: Again.
11:41
Speaker 4: It's not till November, and it's been one hundred and
11:44
Speaker 4: eighty eight degrees in Charleston every day this summer, but
11:47
Speaker 4: by the time this event rolls around will be well
11:49
Speaker 4: past Halloween looking toward the holidays, will probably be bundled up.
11:53
Speaker 4: We want to have some coffee to go along with
11:55
Speaker 4: it as well. We'll be in the cool weather months
11:56
Speaker 4: by that point and there's nothing that nothing will warm
11:59
Speaker 4: you up quietly, little biscuits and gravy.
12:01
Speaker 8: Yeah, and the Capitol Market and our church. We're getting
12:03
Speaker 8: our Facebook event ready to blast off this month too,
12:06
Speaker 8: so it'll be on the Facebook.
12:08
Speaker 9: Yeah.
12:08
Speaker 4: As we get closer and you're looking for entries, you're
12:10
Speaker 4: looking to is there a cutoff as far as like
12:12
Speaker 4: the date goes when you have to let people know
12:15
Speaker 4: that you're can And we'll have you on plenty of
12:16
Speaker 4: times between now and now, but.
12:17
Speaker 8: You have a cut off date yet, I mean preferly
12:20
Speaker 8: just to make sure we can do the logistics and day.
12:21
Speaker 3: Of event lay out to go smooth. I mean by
12:23
Speaker 3: the end of like September, mid October would.
12:25
Speaker 4: Be great, okay, all right, and we'll get we'll have
12:27
Speaker 4: you on then, you know, before then to talk about it.
12:29
Speaker 4: And again we do want to remind you what's the entry.
12:32
Speaker 10: Fee to you?
12:33
Speaker 3: It's free, so we cover the cost.
12:35
Speaker 4: Okay, ye, all right, so keep it? And and how
12:37
Speaker 4: how do people if they just want to come out
12:38
Speaker 4: and samples some biscuits and gravy, how does the ticketing
12:41
Speaker 4: work for that? How does the price gime?
12:42
Speaker 8: Yeah, we'll have wristbans again, so presell if you get
12:45
Speaker 8: them early. It'll be fifteen for adult, five for children,
12:47
Speaker 8: and then day of event it'll be twenty dollars adult
12:49
Speaker 8: and ten for a child.
12:50
Speaker 4: And so are you just able to sample pretty much
12:52
Speaker 4: all that you want to there? Or how does that work?
12:54
Speaker 11: You get?
12:54
Speaker 8: Yeah, so you'll have one to two out serving samplings
12:57
Speaker 8: and so they'll get to visit each contender and if
13:00
Speaker 8: they're not full, they can go back and do round
13:02
Speaker 8: twos if they want. But it's gonna be a lot
13:03
Speaker 8: of food this year. All right, date again November A
13:07
Speaker 8: on Saturday, second Saturday.
13:08
Speaker 4: All right, second Saturday of the month. And this is
13:10
Speaker 4: going to be an annual event here in Charleston. This
13:12
Speaker 4: is the second one that we've done. It's over at
13:14
Speaker 4: Capital Market and again we'll have you on plenty of time.
13:16
Speaker 4: What we wanted to push today was sponsorship. So if
13:19
Speaker 4: there's a company out there auto dealership, you know, anybody
13:23
Speaker 4: that's law firm that wants to sponsor this thing because
13:25
Speaker 4: it does go for a great cause. It is sponsored
13:27
Speaker 4: by South Ridge Church. But again, we don't want people
13:31
Speaker 4: to think that. I mean, there's nothing wrong with with
13:33
Speaker 4: the work that churches do, but this is about more
13:35
Speaker 4: than just church work, because this is the thing that
13:36
Speaker 4: you do out in the community as well. And again,
13:40
Speaker 4: final time, where can people reach out to you if
13:42
Speaker 4: they're interested in being a sponsor?
13:43
Speaker 8: Yeah, so just they can call me at six oh
13:45
Speaker 8: six four six five eighty eight or email me at
13:48
Speaker 8: Jay Underscore mcnerlin at hotmail dot com.
13:51
Speaker 4: All right, we'll have you on between now and the PG.
13:52
Speaker 4: It's always a pleasure to have you on the show.
13:54
Speaker 4: It's good to see you. All right, we'll take a break.
13:56
Speaker 4: It's nine twenty one. You guys are here on a

17:47
Speaker 9: Yeah.
17:47
Speaker 4: Yeah, this is a pretty big deal, pretty and we're
17:50
Speaker 4: gonna get We're be talking about this throughout the day.
17:53
Speaker 15: Uh.
17:54
Speaker 4: I was talking to Dave Wilson in the break there. Uh,
17:57
Speaker 4: a co host of a talk line. They're gonna bring
17:59
Speaker 4: back Kay Murray on the show today. K Kris the
18:01
Speaker 4: original the original talk line and I remember this well
18:05
Speaker 4: was only on Wednesdays and it was hosted by Hobby
18:08
Speaker 4: Kirchill and k Murray. Kay Murray is going to join
18:10
Speaker 4: Wilson Meadows on on talkline. I think Dale Miller is
18:14
Speaker 4: going to be on the show next hour and we're
18:17
Speaker 4: going to have on Metro News Midday George Manahan, who was,
18:19
Speaker 4: as I called him, the original Brad. He was the
18:21
Speaker 4: original Capital Course, Capital Course, so he's going to join
18:25
Speaker 4: us as well. Let's go back to the beginning of
18:27
Speaker 4: Metro News. Where were you forty years ago?
18:29
Speaker 14: I was actually just about when Metro News went on
18:33
Speaker 14: the air forty years ago today. It was just a
18:35
Speaker 14: couple of months before I started an internship there. So
18:40
Speaker 14: I was in the WU School of Journalism and was
18:45
Speaker 14: working with the football team as a student equipment manager.
18:50
Speaker 14: And that's where I met Tony and Hoppey and Uh.
18:54
Speaker 14: So I when my first when I first came to
18:57
Speaker 14: the station, I remember that Metro News had in on
19:00
Speaker 14: the air for just a couple of months, so it's
19:03
Speaker 14: very much in its infancy. Uh but yeah, so it's
19:07
Speaker 14: uh it was. What was so new about it was
19:11
Speaker 14: it was satellite distributed and Dell Miller and John Racy,
19:18
Speaker 14: the owner of the company, uh discussed this idea with
19:22
Speaker 14: Hoppy too, right, and they came up with a proposal
19:27
Speaker 14: to offer this to affiliates other stations across the state.
19:32
Speaker 14: At that time, we only owned two stations, the station,
19:37
Speaker 14: the two stations in Morgantown, w A j R.
19:39
Speaker 4: And w v A Q UH and UH.
19:42
Speaker 14: And so they offered Metro News would be operated out
19:45
Speaker 14: of there, and they they would offer it to certain,
19:47
Speaker 14: you know, certain stations across the state. And the deal
19:49
Speaker 14: would be is that we would put a satellite dish
19:53
Speaker 14: UH so you could receive the signal. We would put
19:57
Speaker 14: the bill for that and put the satellite dish at
19:58
Speaker 14: your station. And so that's what we did for I
20:00
Speaker 14: think it was thirty nine affiliates. Originally thirty nine stations
20:04
Speaker 14: were the original affiliates.
20:05
Speaker 4: And to me, let me just jump in here. And
20:07
Speaker 4: of course, you know, the company and out of Morgantown
20:11
Speaker 4: was very well respected, but just right out of the
20:14
Speaker 4: gate to be able to have thirty nine affiliates to
20:17
Speaker 4: go with them with this idea that we want to
20:19
Speaker 4: do a statewide radio network. Was the fact that you
20:24
Speaker 4: were able to be able to get thirty nine radio
20:27
Speaker 4: stations from day one to say yeah, we want to
20:29
Speaker 4: be a part of this. I think that's pretty special
20:31
Speaker 4: in and of itself. Yeah, it really was.
20:32
Speaker 14: And it speaks to Dale and John and Hoppy and
20:39
Speaker 14: the product you know that was coming out of there
20:42
Speaker 14: and Tony was also part of the original He was
20:44
Speaker 14: there when it started, Tony Creedy, and you know, there's
20:48
Speaker 14: there's a lot that's still the same day. You know,
20:51
Speaker 14: there's still newscasts seven days a week like there were
20:53
Speaker 14: forty years ago, and they start on the weekdays. They
20:58
Speaker 14: started five fifty five am, and they play three times
21:02
Speaker 14: an hour for the affiliates to play them when you know,
21:05
Speaker 14: when it's most convenient for them. They go from six
21:08
Speaker 14: basically it's at five fifty five am to six thirty pm.
21:11
Speaker 14: That's that's the run of them.
21:13
Speaker 4: So it's every day with the exception.
21:17
Speaker 14: The only day we don't have news is Christmas Day,
21:20
Speaker 14: and every other day we have news and we do newscasts,
21:23
Speaker 14: and we've had a lot over the years. You mentioned
21:25
Speaker 14: talk Line, obviously, sports Line and the morning news has
21:28
Speaker 14: been around for more than twenty years, and in the
21:32
Speaker 14: other special program Game Night and just the other special
21:35
Speaker 14: programs that we have. But it's West Virginia is a
21:38
Speaker 14: great state to be able to do this in. I
21:39
Speaker 14: think Hoppy says that in the piece that's going to
21:42
Speaker 14: play here is that just because you know it wasn't
21:46
Speaker 14: it's interesting to hear him talk about it because it
21:48
Speaker 14: really wasn't as easy you talk about the thirty nine afilies.
21:51
Speaker 14: But they had to sell it to them. I mean,
21:52
Speaker 14: they had to say, hey, listen, we think this would
21:54
Speaker 14: be good because you know, back then in the mid eighties,
21:58
Speaker 14: radio was just kind of starting to change a little
22:00
Speaker 14: bit because all these local stations had their own news people, right,
22:04
Speaker 14: but they were starting they were starting to you know,
22:07
Speaker 14: that was being that was starting to be a big
22:09
Speaker 14: commitment for station to be able to keep the local newspeaple.
22:11
Speaker 4: Right, and even the smaller communities like you know, I was.
22:15
Speaker 4: I was about to go into tenth grade when Metro
22:17
Speaker 4: News launched. But in Logan, we had two radio stations
22:20
Speaker 4: at the time, WVW and WLOG. I worked at both
22:23
Speaker 4: of them. I started WLG, went away to college and
22:26
Speaker 4: came back and worked a WVW, but both I mean,
22:29
Speaker 4: and even a town of small as Logan, there were
22:31
Speaker 4: two full time radio stations, two sports teams that covered
22:36
Speaker 4: the Logan basketball team, two news departments, and for younger
22:40
Speaker 4: people that maybe and their stories like that all over
22:42
Speaker 4: the state. That wasn't exclusive of the Logan So as
22:45
Speaker 4: you said to go to them and say, well, why
22:48
Speaker 4: should you know I'm a radio station in Mercer County.
22:50
Speaker 4: Why should I care what's going on in Wetzel County.
22:52
Speaker 14: Right, you got to try to sell that, right, Yeah,
22:54
Speaker 14: And they were able to do so, and and and
22:58
Speaker 14: I think over the years, what's happened. I think it's
22:59
Speaker 14: been the benefit to West Virginia because you know, what's
23:04
Speaker 14: happened in our state, I mean, and what evens what's
23:07
Speaker 14: happened in the industry. Radio companies were not able to
23:10
Speaker 14: continue to staff their stations like they did in the past,
23:14
Speaker 14: and so Metro News has actually provided a really good
23:17
Speaker 14: service of daily news covering the state of West Virginia.
23:20
Speaker 14: Of course, we added a website probably twenty years ago,
23:23
Speaker 14: maybe I forget. I don't know our exact launch day
23:25
Speaker 14: at wv metronews dot com, but you know, everything's on
23:28
Speaker 14: the web now. All of our stories are there and
23:32
Speaker 14: posting there seven days a week in different things. But
23:34
Speaker 14: it's when you talk about I mean, there are radio
23:37
Speaker 14: stations in this state have been around a lot longer
23:39
Speaker 14: than forty years. Individual stations, as we know that, but
23:42
Speaker 14: to have a network that's that's still being able to
23:45
Speaker 14: be around forty years and it's a lot of people
23:47
Speaker 14: it's not just the people you here on the air,
23:49
Speaker 14: it's our folks. Larry Post is leading that effort right now,
23:53
Speaker 14: and our sales folks upstairs that sell Metro News and
23:56
Speaker 14: just do a great job and selling our product. And
23:59
Speaker 14: so we're very thankful to.
24:00
Speaker 4: Folks set on the other side of the glass, you know,
24:03
Speaker 4: uh and Anthony Harmon, Ryan Nicholson who you hear from
24:06
Speaker 4: time to time on the air. And you know that
24:08
Speaker 4: those those folks, Matt Murphy uh are are a big,
24:12
Speaker 4: big buz. Without those guys, none of it happens when
24:15
Speaker 4: it went out the engineering team, none of it happened.
24:17
Speaker 14: Right right and just and just the talent, you know
24:19
Speaker 14: when you think of Chris Lawrence and Fred Pursinger and
24:22
Speaker 14: obviously Tony and Hoppy all those years and uh and
24:26
Speaker 14: and now we're into new programming, which is exciting, you
24:30
Speaker 14: know that that you're part of. And so it's been
24:33
Speaker 14: it's really has been great. And you know, we we're
24:37
Speaker 14: a member of an organization of state networks, you know,
24:40
Speaker 14: and uh and to be able to to uh, we
24:44
Speaker 14: we've we've been able to do some things that other
24:46
Speaker 14: states have had difficulty doing, just other network other statewide
24:49
Speaker 14: networks have had difficulty of doing but we've been able
24:51
Speaker 14: to do it, and so just very thankful for that.
24:53
Speaker 14: And yeah, forty years passed pretty quickly.
24:57
Speaker 4: And it's changed. I mean, as you said, that's the
24:59
Speaker 4: end of saved to the year to talk about how
25:01
Speaker 4: it's it's changed so much because you had to you know,
25:04
Speaker 4: you had to provide the stations with the satellite programming
25:07
Speaker 4: and now everything I've you know, we got computers and
25:09
Speaker 4: people are just down. And in this the phone I
25:12
Speaker 4: was about I thought I was on Metro News TV.
25:13
Speaker 4: I was going to hold up my phone, right, people,
25:15
Speaker 4: this is a great number of people, not the majority
25:18
Speaker 4: of people. This is where they listen to it. Sure,
25:19
Speaker 4: you know it's not necessarily in the cart home radio.
25:22
Speaker 14: So you know at the beginning it would feed, you know,
25:25
Speaker 14: three times an hour on the satellite, and so a
25:27
Speaker 14: station would either take it live when it fed the
25:30
Speaker 14: individual newscast once an hour, or you would record it
25:33
Speaker 14: and play it back. You can do that, but now
25:36
Speaker 14: you don't get so much inside baseball here. But now
25:39
Speaker 14: it still feeds like it always has. But there are
25:42
Speaker 14: other ways that you can we posted in other ways.
25:45
Speaker 14: You have a or affiliates have a have a if
25:49
Speaker 14: I can describe it correctly, they have capabilities of grabbing it,
25:54
Speaker 14: you know what they want. Yeah, they don't have to
25:56
Speaker 14: sit there and wait for it. I mean they can
25:58
Speaker 14: you know, once it's up, they can go grab And
25:59
Speaker 14: that's a lot with a lot of our program they
26:02
Speaker 14: can program it. You know, Ashley Upstairs does a great
26:06
Speaker 14: job with you know, with kind of you know, doing
26:09
Speaker 14: the programming and the continuity and those type of things.
26:12
Speaker 14: So you know there's a lot behind it. But you know,
26:16
Speaker 14: we had the news operation was in Morgantown for the
26:18
Speaker 14: first fifteen years, and then we moved the news operation
26:22
Speaker 14: here in two thousand into Charleston, and so we've been
26:25
Speaker 14: the news operation has been based in Charleston for twenty
26:28
Speaker 14: five years.
26:29
Speaker 16: This month.
26:30
Speaker 14: We came in August of two thousand. I knew George
26:34
Speaker 14: Manahan's going to be on later today. And George was
26:37
Speaker 14: our first Capital correspondent, and we had a lot of
26:40
Speaker 14: people because we were based in Morgantown and so we
26:43
Speaker 14: had someone in this before we owned any stations in Charleston.
26:46
Speaker 14: But he was actually literally at the Capitol reporting and
26:50
Speaker 14: other guys. There's a guy named John Thompson, who did
26:51
Speaker 14: a great job, who was a reporter from the Capitol,
26:53
Speaker 14: did a great job covering stuff, and several other reporters,
26:57
Speaker 14: lots of reporters over the years that we've had talk
27:00
Speaker 14: about some of.
27:01
Speaker 4: Those names that have gone on between the sports team
27:05
Speaker 4: and the news team that have gone the bigger things.
27:07
Speaker 4: I mean, I have one name that sticks out to
27:09
Speaker 4: me because it's an interesting name is Sager mcgoani. Ya
27:12
Speaker 4: mcganni was part of Metro News. And if you're up
27:14
Speaker 4: early like I am, and you listen to American in
27:17
Speaker 4: the Morning that airs prior to the Morning News, you'll
27:19
Speaker 4: hear a report from Sacer mcgoanni every morning on the
27:22
Speaker 4: morning News.
27:23
Speaker 14: Yes, Sager started with us in Morgantown sometime in the nineties,
27:26
Speaker 14: and yeah, he's had a great He works for AP
27:29
Speaker 14: Radio in Washington, d C. Covers the State Department and
27:33
Speaker 14: a lot of times you'll he'll be covering the President.
27:35
Speaker 14: And he was just actually just named to the new
27:39
Speaker 14: House Hall of Fame at the University of Syracuse. Yeah,
27:42
Speaker 14: Broadcasting Hall of Fame at the new House School, which
27:44
Speaker 14: is you know Tony. Tony was named that a couple
27:47
Speaker 14: of years ago and now Sager is going in.
27:48
Speaker 4: So it's one of the I mean that for those
27:50
Speaker 4: who don't know, that's one of the two or three
27:53
Speaker 4: probably premier broadcasting universities in the CATEA Western. It really
27:57
Speaker 4: is early is so.
27:58
Speaker 12: Yeah.
27:59
Speaker 14: The original crew was Hoppy, a guy named Brian Dick,
28:04
Speaker 14: and a guy named Jim Cress. Those were the three anchors,
28:08
Speaker 14: and the capital correspondent was was George Manahan uh and
28:14
Speaker 14: Tony did sports. Also a guy named George von Binko
28:18
Speaker 14: he may remember. Some may remember that name. George did
28:20
Speaker 14: sports too, and that was kind of the original. That
28:23
Speaker 14: was kind of the original crew. But there have been
28:26
Speaker 14: a lot of people over the years. Dave another one,
28:28
Speaker 14: Dave Pass who does Who's Who does baseball for the
28:33
Speaker 14: Nationals and has for years. He he he started with us.
28:37
Speaker 14: Uh what no, I'm talking that's Dave Jaigler. Dave Jaigler
28:41
Speaker 14: does the national does the Arizona Cardinals, he does NBA.
28:47
Speaker 14: So he yeah, he started with us.
28:49
Speaker 9: Uh.
28:49
Speaker 14: Of course, I can't forget Kyle Wiggs, who's been on
28:52
Speaker 14: almost almost from the beginning. I mean he came about
28:54
Speaker 14: the same time.
28:56
Speaker 4: The second generation of Wigs.
28:57
Speaker 12: Yeah.
28:58
Speaker 14: Now, yeah, yeah, so we had We had a lot
28:59
Speaker 14: of day's guy named Dave Ryan. It's always been a
29:02
Speaker 14: thing with this, but we had a guy named Dave Ryan,
29:04
Speaker 14: and Dave has done a lot over the years in
29:07
Speaker 14: sports on UH. He was on he was on like
29:10
Speaker 14: the CBS network for a long time. We had a
29:13
Speaker 14: guy named Charlie Palillo who was that name who left
29:17
Speaker 14: us and went and UH and and went to Houston
29:22
Speaker 14: UH and was on the in on the radio in
29:24
Speaker 14: Houston for years. Charlie was UH more more UH made familiar.
29:30
Speaker 14: And Bill Nevin and Bill is the is the voice
29:33
Speaker 14: of of the stadium and of the coliseum for Mountaineers,
29:37
Speaker 14: and Bills does great work for the w W Foundation.
29:40
Speaker 14: We did news for us for a long time. To
29:43
Speaker 14: Dave Jacklin who's on with Fred on Friday nights, uh
29:47
Speaker 14: is you know, still does the still does football Corse,
29:50
Speaker 14: Travis Jones who's still with us, and so yeah, just
29:53
Speaker 14: a lot of names over that. Jackie Bashera, who's who
29:56
Speaker 14: is a Charleston native who worked for US for a
29:58
Speaker 14: while and also worked for AP Radio. There was a
30:02
Speaker 14: Capital or one of our Capital correspondents named Melissa Rocker
30:06
Speaker 14: who was based here in Charleston. She she did a
30:09
Speaker 14: good job. Tom Gavin kind of another guy.
30:12
Speaker 4: These names because you know, I worked for so long
30:15
Speaker 4: at their station in Logan and our first news every
30:18
Speaker 4: morning was Chris Lawrence usually at five fifty five. I
30:21
Speaker 4: would go on at five thirty and we you know
30:23
Speaker 4: what we call back time into Chris Lawrence five fifty five.
30:25
Speaker 4: And these names. A lot of these people I never met,
30:28
Speaker 4: but hearing these names brings back a lot of memories
30:31
Speaker 4: for me.
30:31
Speaker 14: And then the morning news anchors have been like Jennifer Smith,
30:34
Speaker 14: she was the first morning news anchor with Chris when
30:36
Speaker 14: the morning news started. Then Shanna Johnson, and then Carrie
30:39
Speaker 14: Hoodisak and so and there's just been a lot of
30:44
Speaker 14: you know, just a lot of great people who have
30:46
Speaker 14: worked here, and a lot have gotten their start here
30:49
Speaker 14: and have gone on, you know, to to stay in
30:52
Speaker 14: the business or do other things to kind of related
30:55
Speaker 14: to to journalism or in communication. So we've had a
31:00
Speaker 14: lot of good employees, a ton of good employees.
31:02
Speaker 4: We're going to continue this conversation. I know Jeff that
31:05
Speaker 4: in the midst of all the celebrating that you had
31:08
Speaker 4: a job to do, so Elective will let you out
31:10
Speaker 4: of here.
31:10
Speaker 14: So I appreciate that.
31:12
Speaker 4: Jeff Jenkins again for the news team, thank you so much,
31:14
Speaker 4: and again we are going to continue talking about this.
31:17
Speaker 4: I'm going to roll after the break. I've got a
31:19
Speaker 4: great piece of audio that Chris Lawrence put together on
31:22
Speaker 4: talk Line. Now the entire show is not going to
31:24
Speaker 4: be made up of this. On talk Line, They've got
31:25
Speaker 4: several guests on the show today, but they are going
31:27
Speaker 4: to have Dale Miller on the show today. Kay Murray

31:31

31:36
Speaker 4: who was one of the early affiliates, not from day one,
31:40
Speaker 4: but they got on a couple of years later, about
31:43
Speaker 4: what it was like to be a Metro News affiliate
31:44
Speaker 4: back in the early days. And also the aforementioned George
31:47
Speaker 4: Manahan is going to join us during that segment as well.

34:43
Speaker 4: some time talking about the fortieth anniversary of Metro News,
34:45
Speaker 4: which is today. Set back and give this a listen.
34:50
Speaker 4: The Metro News radio network was the evolution of an idea,
34:54
Speaker 4: a new concept in nineteen eighty five which could adapt
34:57
Speaker 4: to new technology to radio across the Mountain State. The architect,
35:01
Speaker 4: now retired President and General manager Dale Miller. After pitching
35:05
Speaker 4: the idea owner John Racy about the new possibilities of
35:08
Speaker 4: satellite uplinks, they visited Clyde lear in Missouri, the father
35:12
Speaker 4: of satellite radio delivery and the creator of Learfield Communication,
35:16
Speaker 4: and soon afterwards the concept of Metro News was born.
35:19
Speaker 12: We put a satellite edition in every one of thirty
35:23
Speaker 12: seven original affiliates, and that was half off at Chris
35:28
Speaker 12: because you know, a lot of these guys didn't have
35:30
Speaker 12: much property, or we're on top of a roof for
35:32
Speaker 12: trying to go on a telephone pool. But basically we
35:36
Speaker 12: got the infrastructure done and then pull the trigger on
35:40
Speaker 12: the network.
35:41
Speaker 22: On August twelfth, August twelfth, nineteen eighty five, day number one,
35:45
Speaker 22: newscast number one the Metro News Radio network. At the
35:49
Speaker 22: Metro News anchored ass that morning, Hoppy Kurgiable.
35:51
Speaker 16: It was an anxious day and anxious morning. Engineers were
35:57
Speaker 16: still working to ensure or that this satellite delivered network
36:02
Speaker 16: could be on the air. At five thirty in the
36:05
Speaker 16: morning when we sent out the first news call of
36:08
Speaker 16: newscuts and then five point fifty five the first newscast.
36:12
Speaker 16: So I had written and cut the first newscast but
36:15
Speaker 16: an engineer, Chuck Natalie was literally doing the technical technical
36:22
Speaker 16: punch block we call it, to ensure that we could
36:25
Speaker 16: be on the air, you know, the first morning. Obviously,
36:28
Speaker 16: I just wanted it to work right, you know, and
36:31
Speaker 16: make sure all the affiliates were right. So yeah, you
36:35
Speaker 16: know it was it was a little bit of Harry,
36:37
Speaker 16: but you know, it was well worth it.
36:39
Speaker 22: It was a stressful day, so stressful that nobody thought
36:43
Speaker 22: to record that first newscast for posterity. But over time,
36:47
Speaker 22: Metro News began to grow in stature.
36:50
Speaker 16: This once Virginia Metro News sign Jim Krass, Ohio Gounty
36:55
Speaker 16: Surga Judge Greg Bronwater listened to arguments today for the
36:58
Speaker 16: rights of more than sixty men.
37:00
Speaker 22: The concept of a state news network was relatively new
37:03
Speaker 22: and may not have fit everywhere, but Kerchibal said they
37:06
Speaker 22: were able to help radio affiliate stations at the time
37:10
Speaker 22: understand what they were building.
37:12
Speaker 16: They had to be convinced, and I'd say one of
37:15
Speaker 16: the biggest obstacles was you'd go to a local radio
37:18
Speaker 16: station and we'd say we want to do a statewide network,
37:21
Speaker 16: and response was, well, I'm in this town, what do
37:24
Speaker 16: I care about? What's happening in another part of the state,
37:28
Speaker 16: and we had to overcome that by making the argument
37:30
Speaker 16: that even though this state is very very different sections,
37:35
Speaker 16: that there still was a commonality. We're all West Virginians.
37:38
Speaker 16: Many times, often what happens in this state news was
37:42
Speaker 16: affects everybody. So there was some convincing to do with
37:45
Speaker 16: these local radio stations.
37:47
Speaker 12: One of the biggest selling points for Metro News is
37:49
Speaker 12: that I gave all of the radio stations a fax
37:52
Speaker 12: machine so we can send a Matha Davids let up.
37:56
Speaker 12: But to that point, a lot of the little stations
37:58
Speaker 12: didn't have that. Not only did we give every one
38:00
Speaker 12: of these radio stations satellite digits, but I cut a
38:03
Speaker 12: deal with ABC and was able to also give them
38:07
Speaker 12: top of the hour network news, which a lot of
38:10
Speaker 12: them didn't have at the time.
38:12
Speaker 22: Miller admitted the infrastructure was one thing, Programming was another,
38:16
Speaker 22: But then there was the talent.
38:17
Speaker 12: Had a young, very young sports guy who had only
38:20
Speaker 12: been with me a year, Tony Kreedy.
38:22
Speaker 23: All set to go here with the Jerry West Lounge
38:24
Speaker 23: as Major Harris, wearing a rather dapper suit, is joined
38:28
Speaker 23: by head coach Don Neel and they're coming down from
38:30
Speaker 23: the staircase and joining the basketball players lounge as the
38:34
Speaker 23: media begins to turn on their cameras and all the
38:37
Speaker 23: whites are focused on West Virginia's Major Harris and obviously Hoppy.
38:42
Speaker 12: And you know when Hoppy's show first started, it was
38:45
Speaker 12: only on Wednesday morning, and then I came to him
38:47
Speaker 12: one day and said, we need to take this thing
38:49
Speaker 12: every day. You need to beat here. At first, I
38:51
Speaker 12: doing crazy about that because he was still doing news
38:55
Speaker 12: and he was still doing all of the other things
38:57
Speaker 12: that he had to do as news director.
38:59
Speaker 16: It was Dale Miller's vision, and I didn't want to
39:01
Speaker 16: do it. I was thought I was a news director
39:05
Speaker 16: of local news at waj R at the time, and
39:07
Speaker 16: all I could think of was this is going to
39:09
Speaker 16: be a lot of work. And I initially I didn't
39:13
Speaker 16: want to do it, but but I came around, and
39:16
Speaker 16: obviously I'm glad I did.
39:18
Speaker 20: This is talk Line on Metro News. To be on
39:20
Speaker 20: the show this morning, call one eight hundred seven sixty
39:22
Speaker 20: five talk Or in Morgantown two nine six zero zero
39:26
Speaker 20: four one.
39:27
Speaker 4: Your hosts are Kay Murray and Hoppy Kerchieval.
39:29
Speaker 24: Nine thirteen on a Wednesday morning, I'm Hoppy Kerchival with
39:32
Speaker 24: ke Good morning, came.
39:33
Speaker 4: Ray Good Morning, and we've had a problem here getting
39:35
Speaker 4: Lisa on the show.
39:36
Speaker 1: But finally the time has come and she stranded in
39:38
Speaker 1: Ohio with.
39:39
Speaker 24: This Columbus Ohio. Two weeks ago, we had Lisa Bittinger,
39:42
Speaker 24: Miss West Virginia scheduled and frankly canceled her that morning
39:46
Speaker 24: because it came on the same morning as the invasion
39:48
Speaker 24: of Panama and we certainly felt compelled to delve into
39:51
Speaker 24: that issue and did so. So we rescheduled Miss Bittinger
39:54
Speaker 24: for this morning and she joined us from Columbus, Ohio.
39:56
Speaker 24: We're going to bring her online in.
39:57
Speaker 16: Just a minute. But like anything that's new, Chris, it
40:00
Speaker 16: was really difficult because we hadn't done it before, so
40:04
Speaker 16: there was just a lot of unknowns, a lot of
40:06
Speaker 16: problems to work through. We weren't quite ready when we
40:10
Speaker 16: when we actually signed on. So I remember thinking, and
40:13
Speaker 16: this is me that okay, we've just started, but boy,
40:17
Speaker 16: there's a lot that has to be done to ensure
40:20
Speaker 16: that we can pull this off.
40:21
Speaker 22: But that work was done and the results over time
40:24
Speaker 22: were noticeable.
40:25
Speaker 12: You know, I knew there was a niche for it.
40:27
Speaker 12: I knew there was a need for it, and I
40:28
Speaker 12: mean it was very quickly. I could see, you know,
40:32
Speaker 12: within four or five months after launching it. You know,
40:36
Speaker 12: we were getting really good reviews from our affiliates. They
40:38
Speaker 12: were very happy.
40:40
Speaker 9: You know.
40:41
Speaker 12: They loved the fact that they had they could get
40:43
Speaker 12: network news now. They loved the fact they were getting
40:45
Speaker 12: local news. The quality was studio perfect, which was you
40:50
Speaker 12: know that it was a huge change.
40:51
Speaker 20: Over one hundred and thirty pieces of legislation passed during
40:54
Speaker 20: the late hours of this year's legislative session in Charleston.
40:57
Speaker 12: I'm George Manahan for Metro New.
40:59
Speaker 24: You've got to be disappointed and probably still shocked over
41:02
Speaker 24: what happened, are you.
41:03
Speaker 15: Oh yeah, telling him, you know, terribly disappointed. And it's
41:07
Speaker 15: not that I'm a thumbsucker or a powder or anything
41:09
Speaker 15: like that. You know, I've been coaching twenty years and
41:12
Speaker 15: in that span of time, I've lost my share of games.
41:15
Speaker 15: But to me, there's a difference between losing and giving
41:18
Speaker 15: it away. And I felt on Saturday we gave it away.
41:21
Speaker 22: So Bobby Huggins in this case, has left Kansas State
41:24
Speaker 22: and is returning to Morgantown to coach the Mountaineers.
41:28
Speaker 7: A tremendous individual honor for WVU freshman second baseman Jed Jerko.
41:33
Speaker 7: Jerko has taken the lead by storm in his first
41:36
Speaker 7: season in a Mountaineer uniform. He was named the Conference
41:39
Speaker 7: Rookie of the Year. Jerko is currently hitting four eleven
41:42
Speaker 7: on the season heading into postseason play.
41:45
Speaker 4: They get it into CJ.
41:46
Speaker 24: Burks three seconds, two seconds, one second.
41:49
Speaker 4: He launches it.
41:50
Speaker 16: Good if it goes no.
41:51
Speaker 22: I'm the hucking Redscans have upset the number three seed
41:56
Speaker 22: Hedgesville Eagles.
41:57
Speaker 14: Breaking story concerning a mine explosion in southern West Virginia.
42:02
Speaker 14: It happened at about three thirty this afternoon at a
42:05
Speaker 14: Massy owned coal mine, is Performance Coal Company's Upper Branch
42:09
Speaker 14: mine on the Raleigh Boom County line near Whitesville and
42:12
Speaker 14: Monck Coal We have confirmed that six miners have died
42:16
Speaker 14: in this explosion and twenty one miners remain unaccounted.
42:19
Speaker 22: For West Virginia Metro News, I'm Chris Lawrence. Two of
42:23
Speaker 22: the biggest stories in West Virginia history this morning, one
42:27
Speaker 22: of euphoria, one of anguish. The vigil continues this hour
42:31
Speaker 22: in the Upshire County community of Tollmansville as desperate relative
42:34
Speaker 22: as a wait word on the fate of thirteen coal
42:36
Speaker 22: miners trapped in the Sego mine. It's been twenty four
42:39
Speaker 22: hours since an explosion rocked the shaft of that drift
42:41
Speaker 22: mine operated by International Coal Group.
42:44
Speaker 12: I am very very hopeful.
42:45
Speaker 25: I know we have the best teams, we have the
42:47
Speaker 25: best equipment. These are the same people that help those
42:52
Speaker 25: in Pennsylvanian. I have very much hold These are strong miners.
42:57
Speaker 25: They're family down there, and they're going to take care
42:59
Speaker 25: of each other.
43:00
Speaker 22: And I have a lot of hole that is amber helms.
43:01
Speaker 22: Her father is one of those trapped inside. Rescue crews
43:04
Speaker 22: that managed to get ninety two hundred feet into the
43:06
Speaker 22: mine and are drilling on a hole to reach the
43:09
Speaker 22: area where the miners are believed to be trapped. Now
43:12
Speaker 22: onto the other top story of the morning. The West
43:16
Speaker 22: Virginia Mountaineers broke through last night in Atlanta, defeating the
43:20
Speaker 22: Georgia Bulldogs and the Sugar Bowl thirty eight to thirty five.
43:23
Speaker 26: The Mountaineers go into victory formation. Rich Rodrigez has just
43:28
Speaker 26: been given a Gatorade back. Play clock is down to
43:31
Speaker 26: eight game clock inside of forty. Pat White under center
43:36
Speaker 26: takes the snap takes a knee and Georgia is defenseless.
43:40
Speaker 22: Tonicaridi with a final call early this morning on the
43:43
Speaker 22: Mountaineer Sports Network again the final score of West Virginia
43:46
Speaker 22: thirty eight Georgia thirty five. You're listening to Metro News
43:50
Speaker 22: for twenty years, the voice of West Virginia.
43:53
Speaker 16: One of the biggest reasons that I believe that Metro
43:55
Speaker 16: News has been successful over forty years is not only
43:57
Speaker 16: the quality of the salespeople and the marketing people, but
44:00
Speaker 16: of the news and sports people. And the news and
44:03
Speaker 16: sports people yourself included, Jeff, everybody else have shown up
44:08
Speaker 16: every day saying we're going to be good today and
44:12
Speaker 16: as we were yesterday and as we will be tomorrow.
44:15
Speaker 16: So there's been a quality consistency over the years that
44:18
Speaker 16: I think has been integral to the network's success.
44:21
Speaker 12: You know what really made metrin is I think what
44:24
Speaker 12: it is is just the absolute incredible quality of the
44:27
Speaker 12: staff and the longevity of the staff. There are very
44:30
Speaker 12: few radio companies that have ever existed that have had
44:35
Speaker 12: some of the incredible longevity in people that we have,
44:39
Speaker 12: Like you've been there for thirty five years, Chris, the
44:42
Speaker 12: Jeff Jenkins has been there, you know, the same length.

44:56
Speaker 12: the kind of people that were involved in this, to
44:59
Speaker 12: Kyle Wigg, to Travis Joeses, all of the newspeople. It's
45:03
Speaker 12: been a you know, it's just been a beautiful group
45:06
Speaker 12: of people that have stayed together. And I think that's
45:09
Speaker 12: what's made it really special.

48:19
Speaker 4: Hobby the first voice heard on the station. No, I
48:22
Speaker 4: don't think so. I think it was a news Well,
48:25
Speaker 4: maybe it was. I'm not sure it was. TJ tells
48:28
Speaker 4: me it was. It was a newscast. Was the very
48:29
Speaker 4: first thing five point fifty five a m on this
48:33
Speaker 4: date back in nineteen eighty five, So yes, Hoppy was
48:36
Speaker 4: doing straight news at the time. Hoppy was the first voice.
48:38
Speaker 4: I wasn't quite sure about that, but mister Meadows, who
48:41
Speaker 4: wasn't even born man tells me that he was the
48:45
Speaker 4: first voice. Tex says, I'm curious as to what three
48:48
Speaker 4: stories for the last forty years that the long term
48:50
Speaker 4: Metro News employee's rank as most memorable. Jeff obviously had
48:54
Speaker 4: to tag out to go back upstairs to do his
48:57
Speaker 4: his regular jobs. So here's what we'll do on Meta
49:00
Speaker 4: Ture News Midday today. Jeff of course joins us Amanda
49:03
Speaker 4: Baron and I to start the show. I will pose
49:06
Speaker 4: that question to him on Metro News Midday and we'll
49:08
Speaker 4: get an answer for you. I have a feeling I
49:09
Speaker 4: could probably rank them myself. I mean, I haven't been
49:12
Speaker 4: here that long, but I mean just as a listener,
49:15
Speaker 4: and then later somebody who put the station on the
49:17
Speaker 4: air at the different stations where I work, I'd probably
49:20
Speaker 4: take a guess at that what those answers will be.
49:22
Speaker 4: But I will let mister Jenkins answer that first thing. Ryan,
49:26
Speaker 4: try to remind me of that if you want, I'll
49:28
Speaker 4: ask Jeff that first thing when we do Metro News
49:31
Speaker 4: Midday today. Speaking of which, the show's coming up later

51:16
Speaker 28: something inside you that says I may want to do
51:19
Speaker 28: this for a living, you grew up admiring everything that
51:22
Speaker 28: you heard from Metro News. I knew who Dale Miller
51:26
Speaker 28: and Happy Kerchieval and Jeff Jenkins and Chris Lawrence and
51:30
Speaker 28: all these people were before I ever met them, long
51:33
Speaker 28: before I ever met them. And you know that extended
51:35
Speaker 28: into WVU football as well. You know, Dale Miller created
51:39
Speaker 28: MSN and you know heard his name and the credits,
51:42
Speaker 28: and then you get to meet these people, and you
51:44
Speaker 28: see how extraordinary the product that they built truly is.
51:50
Speaker 28: You know, most people in most instances that do something
51:53
Speaker 28: like this day, let's be honest, they fail.
51:56
Speaker 4: They fail.
51:57
Speaker 28: It doesn't work out long term. And to be able
52:01
Speaker 28: to be forty years old and not only have that
52:04
Speaker 28: kind of longevity, but be adaptable to be able to
52:08
Speaker 28: move to today's march change my goodness.
52:11
Speaker 4: I mean from adding the website that was metronews dot
52:14
