- 0:00Speaker 1: Hi, I'm Sam and we are the Living.
- 0:07Speaker 2: God.
- 0:07Speaker 1: Thanks for joining us today, Thanks for having it so
- 0:11Speaker 1: great to be here these.
- 0:12Speaker 2: We're pretty alive and alone. For Living Jamstone, I must say.
- 0:16Speaker 3: Yeah, that statement, the name itself is an oxymoron anyway.
- 0:20Speaker 1: Yeah, but we're you know, we take the living part
- 0:23Speaker 1: to heart.
- 0:26Speaker 4: Living Tombstone hit Australia in July for three shows only,
- 0:30Speaker 4: starting in Brisbane on the fourth and he hit Sydney
- 0:32Speaker 4: on the fifth, finishing in Melbourne July to sixth, So
- 0:35Speaker 4: it's not long, guys.
- 0:36Speaker 2: He's packed and ready together. Is that's sort of that organized?
- 0:39Speaker 1: Oh yeah, I feel like we've got kind of a
- 0:42Speaker 1: rhythm now. You know, we have our we have our
- 0:44Speaker 1: tour routines, we've got our tour you know, packing list, and.
- 0:48Speaker 3: We have good people.
- 0:49Speaker 5: Shout outs to Marcus Greeny, who's our tour manager. Because
- 0:54Speaker 5: for exemple, in Australia, since you know, places are more
- 0:58Speaker 5: far away, we have to like basically do a show
- 1:01Speaker 5: and let's say Brisbane and then the next show we'll
- 1:03Speaker 5: have to immediately leave on.
- 1:05Speaker 3: An airplane and just go to the next place. So
- 1:07Speaker 3: the fact that we have helping us.
- 1:08Speaker 1: With those, yeah, I couldn't do that without a lot
- 1:10Speaker 1: of help.
- 1:11Speaker 4: Oh hell no, you got a bit of time my
- 1:13Speaker 4: father side of those shows, or you're just flying in,
- 1:15Speaker 4: playing and fry it out again.
- 1:17Speaker 1: Unfortunately, we're flying in, playing and flying out again. But
- 1:20Speaker 1: I've been told that it is very important that we
- 1:24Speaker 1: make time for a shoey. That is, we've been informed.
- 1:28Speaker 2: That I told you, I've told you what a shoey
- 1:33Speaker 2: actually is. Do you know what I like? And then
- 1:35Speaker 2: you're kin to do it?
- 1:37Speaker 1: Well, you know, we might bring a fresh pair of shoes.
- 1:40Speaker 3: To do it.
- 1:40Speaker 2: That would be the smill.
- 1:42Speaker 4: They have people from the crowd throw their shoes up
- 1:44Speaker 4: and you're drinking out of an unknown persons like bands
- 1:47Speaker 4: do it.
- 1:47Speaker 2: I can't.
- 1:48Speaker 4: I think it's the most disgusting thing ever. Like I
- 1:50Speaker 4: know what my feet smell like. I ain't drinking out
- 1:52Speaker 4: of that.
- 1:53Speaker 1: Oh yeah, I think we will. We'll have a we'll
- 1:56Speaker 1: have a shoey shoe, we'll line it, we'll line it,
- 2:00Speaker 1: wrap something.
- 2:01Speaker 2: They actually poured a band out a couple of years ago.
- 2:04Speaker 4: I won't drop the actual band in, but my photographer
- 2:07Speaker 4: like they did a shoey, and my photographer took the
- 2:09Speaker 4: fight over the shoe. So they left it sitting on
- 2:11Speaker 4: the on the drum riser, and there was a glass
- 2:13Speaker 4: inside a plastic cup inside the shoe that they'd poured
- 2:16Speaker 4: the drink and do so if you.
- 2:18Speaker 2: Can get away.
- 2:18Speaker 4: If you do that, just make sure the cup's a
- 2:20Speaker 4: little bit below the level of the shoe so you
- 2:22Speaker 4: don't get caught out a little bit of.
- 2:26Speaker 1: Yeah, do we.
- 2:27Speaker 3: Worry about boots and stuff like a bigger show?
- 2:29Speaker 4: Yeah?
- 2:30Speaker 1: Yeah, it's the many the smallest shoe possible. Please.
- 2:34Speaker 2: Yeah, well you only have to pour like a half
- 2:36Speaker 2: drinking it.
- 2:36Speaker 4: You don't have to fill the shoe up, So don't
- 2:38Speaker 4: let anyone lie to and say that you just pour
- 2:40Speaker 4: a bit.
- 2:40Speaker 2: Of a drink in there. So there's you. Look, I'd
- 2:43Speaker 2: like the.
- 2:44Speaker 3: Whole interview about conversation.
- 2:46Speaker 1: Yeah, I know, no, this has been my old shoey
- 2:49Speaker 1: conversation has been so fascinating to us.
- 2:52Speaker 5: Yeah, we're promoting an album called Rust anyways, so shoey,
- 2:56Speaker 5: So does it get one question?
- 2:58Speaker 3: And that one question?
- 3:00Speaker 2: What about.
- 3:03Speaker 3: Does the show he get suggy?
- 3:04Speaker 1: Like?
- 3:04Speaker 3: Does the show get suggy? Like? Can you even drink
- 3:06Speaker 3: it when it's like cool weather?
- 3:08Speaker 1: Like?
- 3:08Speaker 4: Yeah, you've got to drink it pretty quick, not to
- 3:11Speaker 4: drink it pretty quick.
- 3:12Speaker 2: And if it is one of your own shoes and
- 3:14Speaker 2: you gotta put it back on, or would bring a
- 3:15Speaker 2: fresh prow of socks before you put it on?
- 3:18Speaker 5: Oh a love effector okay, all right, Yeah, there's so much,
- 3:22Speaker 5: so much to learn.
- 3:23Speaker 4: Say, we had this conversation, So back on the real
- 3:29Speaker 4: reason why you're coming over.
- 3:31Speaker 2: Your music integrates electronic rock to this gaming culture and
- 3:34Speaker 2: inchinetior anthem. So how do you how do you fit
- 3:37Speaker 2: all that into a live show? Like is it what's
- 3:38Speaker 2: the process?
- 3:40Speaker 3: Oh, that's a good question. So the way we do it, and.
- 3:43Speaker 1: A big part of it is is the costumes, I think,
- 3:46Speaker 1: Oh yeah, because the show, you know, the last thing
- 3:49Speaker 1: we want to do for a fan base who is
- 3:52Speaker 1: so visual because everything that they digest from us is
- 3:56Speaker 1: on the internet and largely like through music, videos and
- 4:00Speaker 1: video games are obviously such a visual medium. We want
- 4:03Speaker 1: to give people something visual that they can digest.
- 4:06Speaker 5: It's very like it's like it's like because in and
- 4:09Speaker 5: of itself, and to what sim is saying is like
- 4:12Speaker 5: because the band is very much in and of itself,
- 4:14Speaker 5: like characters like this really big out of this world
- 4:18Speaker 5: like cloak to them with the neon colors. It's like
- 4:20Speaker 5: the whole point is much like the things that we're
- 4:23Speaker 5: very much because gaming and media culture is very much
- 4:26Speaker 5: about how much you feel for them and the things
- 4:28Speaker 5: you're into, So that's we translate and try to connect
- 4:31Speaker 5: it within our own world.
- 4:32Speaker 1: So, yeah, we try to have characters people can connect
- 4:35Speaker 1: to that are like very visual and exciting to look at,
- 4:39Speaker 1: you know.
- 4:39Speaker 3: Fields Rich.
- 4:40Speaker 1: Yeah, beyond beyond just the experience of going and seeing
- 4:43Speaker 1: a band play live, You're getting to see these characters
- 4:45Speaker 1: perform live.
- 4:46Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, yeah, And it isn't like, is it because
- 4:49Speaker 4: of that, is it a structured performance or is it
- 4:51Speaker 4: more at lib.
- 4:53Speaker 1: Oh, it's still I wouldn't say it's very structured beyond
- 4:56Speaker 1: the set list, you know. I think part of it
- 4:59Speaker 1: is we have a sense of these characters' personalities and
- 5:03Speaker 1: we'll embody them a little. You know, we'll do different
- 5:05Speaker 1: things every show. We don't have specific act out beats
- 5:09Speaker 1: or scenes or anything like that, but we're you know,
- 5:12Speaker 1: we're always going to be in that kind of state
- 5:14Speaker 1: of mind of the character. So Yoav's always going to
- 5:17Speaker 1: be very playful on stage. I'm always going to be
- 5:20Speaker 1: very kind of like brash and in your face that
- 5:22Speaker 1: you know our arche Yes, yeah, lots of punching, but.
- 5:27Speaker 5: Always like like a couple of feet sorry meters away
- 5:32Speaker 5: from Sam just to make sure.
- 5:33Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, just I need I have a I have
- 5:36Speaker 1: a swinging zone. And are you know, like our our
- 5:41Speaker 1: bassist is always kind of jumping around and egging on
- 5:44Speaker 1: the crowd. Our our guitarist, the vibe is kind of
- 5:48Speaker 1: like a Frankenstein's Monster sort of thing. I mean, the
- 5:52Speaker 1: costume of our guitarist. He's probably about close to seven
- 5:55Speaker 1: feet tall, so he's like kind of hulking and moves
- 5:59Speaker 1: in these very sort of animatronic ways.
- 6:02Speaker 5: Oh, I'm strong is I think the most funny just
- 6:04Speaker 5: because of how one eighty what we're describing.
- 6:06Speaker 3: I'm strong is like, you know, pretty much stands still.
- 6:10Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 6:11Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, he's a very static performance, which is funny.
- 6:14Speaker 1: I do think like most bands, your guitarist takes this
- 6:18Speaker 1: role of like being really interactive and really in the crowd,
- 6:22Speaker 1: and for us, I think our bassist is the person
- 6:24Speaker 1: who does that. Yeah, and our guitarist very much like
- 6:27Speaker 1: kind of posts up and kind of takes up space
- 6:30Speaker 1: and and has these like little cute moments of being this. Yes, yeah,
- 6:37Speaker 1: a beloved you know, a beloved kind of Frankenstein's Monster
- 6:42Speaker 1: type character where he's just like he's he he's walking
- 6:46Speaker 1: around and experiencing the space. Yeah, yeah, yeah, like a
- 6:51Speaker 1: like an animatronic character from you know, a Chuck E
- 6:54Speaker 1: Cheese or a Shaky's Pizza or whatever's.
- 7:00Speaker 4: Can you go into the visual side of the live
- 7:01Speaker 4: show or is that sort of something that you'd rather
- 7:04Speaker 4: keep safet to, like.
- 7:05Speaker 1: Oh no, no, no, absolutely. The visual component is largely
- 7:10Speaker 1: built around the costumes. So each of the five costumes
- 7:13Speaker 1: has their own specific lighting color. And these are all
- 7:18Speaker 1: up costumes. So my costume is I don't know if
- 7:21Speaker 1: you can tell green. You have this orange. Our drummer
- 7:29Speaker 1: is blue, our guitarist is red, and our bassist is magenta.
- 7:32Speaker 1: So all of the costumes are totally monochrome except for
- 7:36Speaker 1: these lighting features. We all have these masks that have
- 7:39Speaker 1: this skull that's lit up in the color, and then
- 7:42Speaker 1: different things on our bodies that light up. It's it's
- 7:46Speaker 1: a little bit power Rangers, yeah, a little a little
- 7:50Speaker 1: bit power ranger.
- 7:51Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 7:52Speaker 4: And you say, like visuals and stuff gone on the
- 7:54Speaker 4: background have you got all those sort of effects as well.
- 7:57Speaker 1: So we do sometimes use a video wall, but largely
- 8:00Speaker 1: we treat it as the weird visuals because we have
- 8:03Speaker 1: the light yoast he has this uh display on his
- 8:09Speaker 1: chest that has a waveform that reacts to when he
- 8:12Speaker 1: sings and when the band is playing music. Cool.
- 8:15Speaker 3: Nice, nice.
- 8:16Speaker 4: Now you mentioned Five Nights of Freddy's before, which I'm
- 8:19Speaker 4: glad he did because people who might have not might
- 8:22Speaker 4: have heard a hype of you, guys, or they don't
- 8:23Speaker 4: actually know who you are, Like that was the end
- 8:26Speaker 4: closing credits of the movie Five Nights at Freddie's.
- 8:29Speaker 2: Did did you guys write that for the movie? Or
- 8:31Speaker 2: was that written first?
- 8:32Speaker 1: And yo, yo, I've wrote that on his own years ago.
- 8:36Speaker 3: So maybe longer than that.
- 8:38Speaker 5: The song itself was made in response to the game
- 8:43Speaker 5: coming out the week before or so like. And so
- 8:47Speaker 5: this was all like a new fascination for people on
- 8:50Speaker 5: the internet like myself, and I thought, as a should
- 8:53Speaker 5: I try to make a song about it? I being
- 8:56Speaker 5: being on the internet and seeing musicians making songs about
- 8:59Speaker 5: things they they care about. The love is nothing new,
- 9:02Speaker 5: but I decided to give it a shot with Freddy's
- 9:04Speaker 5: and Uh and and that was the thing is like,
- 9:08Speaker 5: I don't think neither of us like knew that like
- 9:11Speaker 5: this was gonna be a movie one day or that.
- 9:15Speaker 3: It's more the fact that we didn't even know it
- 9:16Speaker 3: was going to escalate to that degree that's cool about.
- 9:20Speaker 1: Yeah, there was no sense of this is going to
- 9:22Speaker 1: be a movie one day. This is maybe that many
- 9:24Speaker 1: people that care about this, this franchise. I think it
- 9:28Speaker 1: was just you know, something cool that you loved and
- 9:30Speaker 1: you thought, hey, let me, let me try this, and
- 9:33Speaker 1: it had such an impact that you know, uh, Yov
- 9:38Speaker 1: got emailed about putting it in the movie before the
- 9:41Speaker 1: movie even attached its final director.
- 9:44Speaker 3: Yep.
- 9:46Speaker 1: Yeah, so it was very early in the process that
- 9:48Speaker 1: the creator of the games reached out to him and said, hey,
- 9:51Speaker 1: it's important to me that this song is in the film.
- 9:53Speaker 4: Well, I'm gonna be completely honest here and you guys
- 9:55Speaker 4: probably had a comment on this, but that was a
- 9:58Speaker 4: hard light of the movie for me, Like the movie
- 10:00Speaker 4: was pretty lame when that came out of the end.
- 10:02Speaker 4: That was that like brought everything back into the perspective
- 10:05Speaker 4: and it was it was pretty good.
- 10:06Speaker 2: So thumbs up, guys.
- 10:10Speaker 4: You mentioned before your new album that you've been working
- 10:12Speaker 4: on two called Rust.
- 10:14Speaker 2: So when you planted early, that is that this year.
- 10:17Speaker 1: So yeah, Rust comes out three days from now from
- 10:21Speaker 1: from this recording. So it comes out and we're so excited.
- 10:27Speaker 1: It's been a five year process, six year process.
- 10:31Speaker 5: I think it was because I remember Sam showed me
- 10:34Speaker 5: the first demo system it was called at the time,
- 10:37Speaker 5: in nineteen So that's why I remember then.
- 10:39Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, yeah, this is this has been baking for
- 10:43Speaker 1: a while. Uh so we're really excited to get it
- 10:46Speaker 1: out there and play so much of it live for
- 10:49Speaker 1: people too.
- 10:50Speaker 4: Yeah. Yeah, tell us a bit more about the album,
- 10:53Speaker 4: like is it what fans would expect from you guys,
- 10:55Speaker 4: or in six years if you sort.
- 10:56Speaker 2: Of branched out a bit more and got some surprises.
- 10:59Speaker 1: I think it's I think it's going to be a
- 11:01Speaker 1: little bit surprising thematically, but I think sonically, like, I
- 11:06Speaker 1: think it's going to deliver people a lot of stuff
- 11:08Speaker 1: that they're very into already from.
- 11:10Speaker 3: Us, And I don't know.
- 11:12Speaker 5: We we've always tried a lot with our fans, like
- 11:15Speaker 5: different ideas, even in things that there are familiar to
- 11:18Speaker 5: So let's say the song like let's say Spooky is
- 11:21Speaker 5: us of jump Scares is like a.
- 11:24Speaker 3: Folky swing song. Like.
- 11:26Speaker 5: The point is that we always strive for interesting like
- 11:30Speaker 5: as in like we we never we never want to
- 11:33Speaker 5: make something an ifing we would be act for you know,
- 11:37Speaker 5: doing this thing that would be the same.
- 11:39Speaker 3: Over and over kind of thing.
- 11:40Speaker 1: Yeah, I think our fans know to be unexpected.
- 11:43Speaker 3: Yeah exactly.
- 11:43Speaker 5: Yeah, so this is to to really give our fans
- 11:46Speaker 5: something that is new for both of us to tackle
- 11:48Speaker 5: and say, how do we given hell for ourselves? This
- 11:52Speaker 5: is a challenge to do some of like this and
- 11:55Speaker 5: say let's make something good out of it.
- 11:56Speaker 1: Yeah, And there's always it's it's exciting. There's always a
- 12:00Speaker 1: lot of pressure for the sophomore album specifically, so we're
- 12:04Speaker 1: excited to see what the response is and us.
- 12:07Speaker 4: Now, you guys have been doing this now for every decade,
- 12:10Speaker 4: but what you've obviously been very successful. But what was
- 12:14Speaker 4: your vision back when you started, Like was it was
- 12:16Speaker 4: it this? Or did did you have other plans.
- 12:18Speaker 3: For what you were doing? Good question.
- 12:20Speaker 5: It's kind of like from the very beginning, the name itself,
- 12:24Speaker 5: The Living to Soon was very much like this. This
- 12:28Speaker 5: gives the vibe of bands and stuff I was listening
- 12:32Speaker 5: to at the time. It's very much like my Chemical
- 12:34Speaker 5: Romance or Linking Park. It's like big names, but I'm
- 12:38Speaker 5: also an Internet kid, so it's like you open a
- 12:41Speaker 5: YouTube channel with that name and you say, what do
- 12:43Speaker 5: you do when you're a musician on the internet and
- 12:45Speaker 5: you have this name?
- 12:46Speaker 3: And then you want to keep going.
- 12:48Speaker 5: So from the very beginning, it was basically like, this
- 12:51Speaker 5: is about the love for things that give you this
- 12:56Speaker 5: really big emotive feeling that you're into, like as we.
- 12:59Speaker 3: Talked earlier, and that was the goal, is to see how.
- 13:02Speaker 5: Do we do that when the Internet is all always
- 13:04Speaker 5: about how do we feel for really big things? And
- 13:07Speaker 5: especially now when you know in the Taktok page everything
- 13:10Speaker 5: just gives you something to feel for.
- 13:11Speaker 1: Yes, yeah, And I think so that's an interesting point
- 13:14Speaker 1: you bring up in that, like it's so much of
- 13:16Speaker 1: it is more about connecting with people than anything else.
- 13:19Speaker 1: And I don't think there was ever a plan at
- 13:23Speaker 1: the beginning of like, oh, here's the here's the business
- 13:26Speaker 1: plan for this band or anything like that. I think
- 13:29Speaker 1: it was just you know, how to connect to people
- 13:33Speaker 1: through a screen in this in these faceless communities of fans.
- 13:40Speaker 5: The name itself is inherently inspired by Ben's that in
- 13:44Speaker 5: and of itself thinks you feel for like as a concept,
- 13:47Speaker 5: like gorillas, for example, it's a great the name.
- 13:50Speaker 3: Brings up and you don't just think about the music
- 13:52Speaker 3: and think about.
- 13:53Speaker 2: The entire Yeah.
- 13:55Speaker 5: Yeah, it's like almost like a snapshot or or an
- 13:59Speaker 5: obsession over other bands that had this sort of name
- 14:03Speaker 5: and idea and big oh bake yeah.
- 14:06Speaker 1: And bands that played their own sort of worlds and
- 14:09Speaker 1: their lore.
- 14:09Speaker 3: Yes. Yeah.
- 14:12Speaker 4: And he's in a unique position of both being recording
- 14:14Speaker 4: artists and influences in gaming. So how difficult is it
- 14:17Speaker 4: to combine both of those worlds.
- 14:22Speaker 1: I think it's like go with I was gonna say,
- 14:24Speaker 1: I think it's easier than ever now in that I
- 14:28Speaker 1: think gaming there was a period of time, certainly when
- 14:32Speaker 1: we were growing up, when gaming was still a little
- 14:35Speaker 1: bit niche. There was still that kind of dichotomy of oh,
- 14:38Speaker 1: those are the nerds, nobody sits with them.
- 14:41Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 14:41Speaker 5: I was definitely picked up on yeah, and.
- 14:46Speaker 1: I think you know, that has completely disappeared. You know,
- 14:50Speaker 1: I think at some point culturally the nerds won and
- 14:54Speaker 1: and at this point now, you know, I think gaming
- 14:58Speaker 1: isn't it's not niche anymore. You know, so Sabrina Carpenter
- 15:01Speaker 1: is in Fortnite. So I think there isn't really a
- 15:04Speaker 1: division between the gaming world and pop culture in general anymore.
- 15:09Speaker 5: Yeah, everything, I think everyone It could be just affect
- 15:13Speaker 5: that now everyone has a phone, so it's only everyone
- 15:15Speaker 5: has a computer, yeh, as opposed to they were you know,
- 15:20Speaker 5: very few people had them Mega Sega, Mega drive or yeah, PlayStation.
- 15:25Speaker 1: Yeah, no, absolutely, And I think that that's a really
- 15:28Speaker 1: good point. Is I can play Fortnite on this correct,
- 15:31Speaker 1: you know, I have set up at home where I'm like, oh,
- 15:35Speaker 1: let me make sure everything set up. I can only
- 15:38Speaker 1: spot in my house alone. It's so much more social
- 15:42Speaker 1: than it's ever been. Uh, And so I think ultimately
- 15:46Speaker 1: it's not hard to bridge that gap. And in fact
- 15:48Speaker 1: that the the the fact that we came up around
- 15:53Speaker 1: gaming has been an advantage lately because a lot of
- 15:57Speaker 1: people are coming later to the gaming Yeah, all the
- 16:00Speaker 1: gaming fandom base than we are who have been here
- 16:04Speaker 1: for a while.
- 16:04Speaker 5: Yeah, we don't have to like because gaming is so
- 16:06Speaker 5: big that we don't need to once we're in the
- 16:09Speaker 5: space now to pretend that we like it. Because you
- 16:12Speaker 5: can only reach an audience when they already had like
- 16:14Speaker 5: a leg.
- 16:15Speaker 3: Up on you.
- 16:15Speaker 5: Yeah, we just had it from the very beginning, like
- 16:17Speaker 5: it was never there's nothing we knew was a quality
- 16:21Speaker 5: thing for everybody before we had people try to.
- 16:24Speaker 3: Convince one that it is.
- 16:25Speaker 1: Yeah, there's no sense that we're playing with gaming for clicks.

- 16:30Speaker 4: I will finish up with one question, going, so how
- 16:32Speaker 4: do you fund a balance in the creating process between
- 16:35Speaker 4: those worlds, Like how do you know when you can't
- 16:37Speaker 4: check far in one direction or not far enough in another? Oh?
- 16:41Speaker 5: Great questick one, Yeah, I think it. It's I think
- 16:47Speaker 5: to me, like I don't know about you, but it's
- 16:50Speaker 5: like I feel like no matter what we we always
- 16:57Speaker 5: you know, feel for something. It's like we always know
- 17:00Speaker 5: that something is eliciting us a certain reaction to know
- 17:04Speaker 5: that maybe there's something to pursue and if it's even
- 17:08Speaker 5: like an idea worth pursuing, that will do it. And
- 17:10Speaker 5: given how semini are both songwttered from different backgrounds, uh,
- 17:15Speaker 5: try to almost be the you know when when you
- 17:17Speaker 5: launch the nuclear like nuclear launch.
- 17:20Speaker 1: You have oh yeah, you have the two keys.
- 17:23Speaker 3: They doesn't and it's a new idea then it doesn't long.
- 17:26Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, yeah, but if we both turned on the key,
- 17:29Speaker 5: especially if we start talking about it, then we'll launch it.
- 17:31Speaker 1: That's a great matter of perfect perfect entirely. Yeah, we
- 17:35Speaker 1: got it. It's a two key launch all the time.
- 17:37Speaker 2: Yes, that's fantastic. All right, guys.
