- 0:02Speaker 1: Good morning, good morning, good morning, welcome, welcome, welcome you
- 0:05Speaker 1: to youse. Time now for car Talk. Brad Duneus is
- 0:08Speaker 1: in the house with Toyota and friends. How you doing, Brad,
- 0:12Speaker 1: Good morning, Tom. I'm doing great. It's a beautiful.
- 0:15Speaker 2: Morning out there in Bartlesville. It's at the car lot.
- 0:18Speaker 3: We were very busy this morning, a few people in
- 0:21Speaker 3: the service lane and in the lounge and enjoying this
- 0:25Speaker 3: spring like weather. A little bit chillier this morning, but it's.
- 0:30Speaker 4: Really nice coming. I heard some rains coming.
- 0:32Speaker 2: Yeah, that'll be good. That's good.
- 0:34Speaker 3: And I've got Todd Edwards here from the Bartlesville area
- 0:38Speaker 3: Big Brothers Big Sisters.
- 0:40Speaker 2: The area directors say and say hello again.
- 0:42Speaker 4: Hello, Yeah, thanks for having me.
- 0:44Speaker 2: It's great to have you back on the show.
- 0:46Speaker 3: Always loved to hear what's going on with Big the
- 0:51Speaker 3: Bigs in town. And that's a great program. And we've
- 0:55Speaker 3: got you've got the annual Bowl for Kid's Sake coming up.
- 1:00Speaker 4: Here pretty around the corner. That's it.
- 1:02Speaker 2: Yes, that's a big time.
- 1:03Speaker 3: I know people have a lot of fun putting together
- 1:06Speaker 3: teams and going out and raising money for the Big
- 1:10Speaker 3: Brothers Big Sisters.
- 1:11Speaker 4: I was just looking yesterday, we have two top teams
- 1:14Speaker 4: really competing for the most raised. They are thirty dollars.
- 1:19Speaker 4: So it kind of goes back and forth and you
- 1:21Speaker 4: post that on the website, don't on our website you
- 1:24Speaker 4: kind of see, yeah, who's the top person top teams.
- 1:27Speaker 4: It's a lot of fun.
- 1:28Speaker 3: So you competitive bowlers are competitive just in raising money
- 1:33Speaker 3: and getting all that. You know, your competitive folks out
- 1:37Speaker 3: there need to become a part of this.
- 1:39Speaker 4: It's a lot of fun.
- 1:40Speaker 3: It is a lot of fun. And it's been going
- 1:43Speaker 3: on a long time too, right, Yeah.
- 1:45Speaker 4: It has I don't know, I know, I think over
- 1:49Speaker 4: thirty five years. It's been going on.
- 1:51Speaker 3: So yeah, and we were talking too about the growth
- 1:56Speaker 3: and big brothers and big sisters.
- 1:58Speaker 4: Oh my god.
- 1:59Speaker 2: Yeah, so tell us about that a little bit. Yeah.
- 2:03Speaker 4: So just kind of wrapped up last year was able
- 2:05Speaker 4: to kind of really kind of dig in the numbers.
- 2:06Speaker 4: I like, look at the data at the end of
- 2:08Speaker 4: the day, are we really doing more work? Are we
- 2:11Speaker 4: really helping things out? So looking over that on January first,
- 2:16Speaker 4: we had nearly twenty percent it was nineteen point three
- 2:20Speaker 4: percent more active matches than January first of last year.
- 2:25Speaker 4: And then our waiting list had grown fifty four percent
- 2:28Speaker 4: over January first last year, so pretty much in every
- 2:31Speaker 4: area that we could be growing, we are.
- 2:34Speaker 2: So that's exciting.
- 2:35Speaker 3: And no matching those people up as the kids with
- 2:39Speaker 3: their big is what it's all about. And that mentoring
- 2:43Speaker 3: process of getting to build that relationship and kind of
- 2:48Speaker 3: go from there through multiple years, because it's really something
- 2:53Speaker 3: that starts and then goes on and then odd times
- 2:57Speaker 3: after they've graduated from high school.
- 3:00Speaker 4: So I get people all the time said, Hey, I
- 3:02Speaker 4: was a big back in the nineties or early two thousands.
- 3:06Speaker 4: Do you have their number? Can I connect with them?
- 3:07Speaker 4: We actually have a really cool we call an alumni
- 3:09Speaker 4: program now where where old bigs and littles are coming
- 3:13Speaker 4: and mashing up. Because it does it kind of goes
- 3:15Speaker 4: on lots of times forever. I know, your wife's a
- 3:18Speaker 4: fantastic big sister, and you know, recently I kind of
- 3:22Speaker 4: got to listen to the kids and kind of talk
- 3:24Speaker 4: to them. She's learned how to how to swim, you know,
- 3:27Speaker 4: from that relationship and just things like that building confidence,
- 3:31Speaker 4: and what we say is we want to unlock the
- 3:33Speaker 4: potential of youth and just through to do.
- 3:36Speaker 3: The things she wouldn't have you got to do otherwise.
- 3:38Speaker 3: You know, that's a you know, different opportunities. I think
- 3:42Speaker 3: they're going to go to the Ballet and Tulsa the
- 3:44Speaker 3: sun Ball House.
- 3:45Speaker 2: Cool.
- 3:45Speaker 4: Yeah, how cool.
- 3:46Speaker 2: That'd be awesome.
- 3:48Speaker 3: And then we also, you guys are kind of related
- 3:52Speaker 3: to the Young Scholars program here too, which has a
- 3:55Speaker 3: big fundraising event coming up also at the end of February,
- 3:59Speaker 3: and your support coming and cork your support. Your two
- 4:04Speaker 3: programs work together, right, we do.
- 4:06Speaker 4: So. Yeah, to be a part of Giving Scholars, they
- 4:08Speaker 4: require to have a mentor as well in that program,
- 4:11Speaker 4: and so we supply that part of their program is
- 4:14Speaker 4: the mentorship. So if you can be a part of
- 4:18Speaker 4: Big Brothers Big Sisters without being a part of Young Scholars,
- 4:20Speaker 4: but if you come in with Young Scholars, then you'll
- 4:23Speaker 4: also be a part of Big Brothers and Big Sisters.
- 4:25Speaker 2: So that's what I was saying.
- 4:26Speaker 3: And that's February twenty eighth, seven to nine at Saint
- 4:30Speaker 3: John School, I believe.
- 4:32Speaker 2: And it's a the old.
- 4:34Speaker 3: Low Family thing, low Family inspired, they say these days,
- 4:40Speaker 3: but it's known.
- 4:41Speaker 4: In the leadership Bartlesville, and so me and Donald we
- 4:43Speaker 4: meet really regularly. Now we also meet outside of that.
- 4:46Speaker 4: We work together actually for quite a while. Hearing the
- 4:50Speaker 4: excitement about on court coming up. It's going to be
- 4:53Speaker 4: a great event.
- 4:53Speaker 2: Yeah, no, it is a great event.
- 4:56Speaker 3: I see her at my rotary club and George and
- 4:59Speaker 3: all a lot of the people that help with that
- 5:01Speaker 3: programer are part of my club, and so we're always
- 5:05Speaker 3: learning about that and excited to attend that later in
- 5:10Speaker 3: the month and then but both for kids take starts
- 5:13Speaker 3: around then too, so we'll give us some more detail
- 5:16Speaker 3: on both for kid's sake in case people want to
- 5:18Speaker 3: put together a team.
- 5:19Speaker 2: I assume there's still time to get started.
- 5:21Speaker 4: There's still plenty of time. It really like this is
- 5:23Speaker 4: our major time that really starts to ramp up. There's
- 5:27Speaker 4: three we saw three weeks for our first event, so
- 5:29Speaker 4: we have three different bowl nights. That's gonna be February
- 5:32Speaker 4: twenty seventh. That's a Friday, that's the last Friday in February,
- 5:36Speaker 4: and then the first Thursday Friday in March. So that's
- 5:38Speaker 4: March fifth, March sixth. Yeah, Well we asked for You
- 5:41Speaker 4: can go to the website. It's b Fksbartlesville dot org
- 5:46Speaker 4: and then you can sign up either individually or you
- 5:48Speaker 4: can say I want to put together a team. Teams
- 5:50Speaker 4: are usually six people. We rent out the whole bowling alley,
- 5:54Speaker 4: come hang out. If you do an individual we'll come
- 5:56Speaker 4: and make sure you still have a good time with
- 5:58Speaker 4: a group of people. But yeah, just getting a team together.
- 6:01Speaker 4: We ask h raise one hundred and fifty dollars per team.
- 6:04Speaker 4: So if you've got ten friends that can donate fifteen dollars,
- 6:08Speaker 4: you're locked in. You're good to go.
- 6:09Speaker 2: Awesome and it's a great event. You go out and
- 6:12Speaker 2: then you get a chance to bowl with your friends
- 6:14Speaker 2: and you know, not getting some patents.
- 6:17Speaker 4: We try to really just ramp up, you know, the
- 6:19Speaker 4: fun there. So we usually have green Marty Girl beads.
- 6:22Speaker 4: Anybody gets a strike, we're passing those out. We have
- 6:24Speaker 4: blow sticks. If you raise you know, your full amount
- 6:28Speaker 4: for a team, which is nine hundred, we're gonna buy pizza.
- 6:30Speaker 4: We're gonna buy pop and yeah, we just try to
- 6:32Speaker 4: make it a really awesome, fun event. It's the bowling
- 6:36Speaker 4: is the fun part, right, It's really about fundraising. It's
- 6:39Speaker 4: really about supplying the funds for us to can you
- 6:41Speaker 4: continue growing like we are. But then, yeah, we want
- 6:44Speaker 4: to give back to all the people that help support us,
- 6:47Speaker 4: and so the bowling it's just a big party.
- 6:50Speaker 3: And you know, we talked about the main part of
- 6:52Speaker 3: the program, the connecting the.
- 6:55Speaker 2: Bigs and the littles. How does that work?
- 6:58Speaker 3: What is the what do you if if someone's interested
- 7:01Speaker 3: in exploring that opportunity, what do they need to do
- 7:04Speaker 3: and what's the how does it work?
- 7:06Speaker 4: Yeah, the best fastest way is go to our website.
- 7:09Speaker 4: It's big Oklahoma dot org and there's a button that
- 7:12Speaker 4: say says I'm interested in volunteering. You click on it.
- 7:15Speaker 4: It's a very short questionnaire kind of ask you some
- 7:18Speaker 4: simple questions, and then we're gonna call you some time later,
- 7:21Speaker 4: probably that day, schedule an actual interview where you come in,
- 7:25Speaker 4: you'll sit down. Usually takes thirty forty five minutes because
- 7:28Speaker 4: we want.
- 7:28Speaker 2: To know about you.
- 7:29Speaker 4: We want to know what do you like, what do
- 7:30Speaker 4: you don't like, interests, what's your expectation of the program.
- 7:35Speaker 4: And then we ask kids the exact same thing. The
- 7:37Speaker 4: last thing we want to do is make a match
- 7:39Speaker 4: that just doesn't work well. So we're gonna we ask
- 7:41Speaker 4: the kids same thing. What are you into, what do
- 7:43Speaker 4: you like to do? What would a really cool big brother,
- 7:45Speaker 4: big sister look like to you. And so then we
- 7:48Speaker 4: me and Dana we sit down and I mean we
- 7:51Speaker 4: spend about three to four hours every week. Here's the
- 7:54Speaker 4: volunteers came in, here's all the kids in our program.
- 7:57Speaker 4: Who's going to match well? And then we'll call the
- 7:59Speaker 4: balllunteer first and kind of say, here's what we're thinking.
- 8:02Speaker 4: Here's this kid, Here's how old they are, here's what
- 8:04Speaker 4: they're into. What do you think about this? If everybody says, yeah,
- 8:07Speaker 4: I think this sounds great, you match up, We'll get
- 8:11Speaker 4: you started on your first program and just kind of
- 8:13Speaker 4: let you guys meet each other and start that relationship.
- 8:17Speaker 2: And you kind of coach both sides through the process.
- 8:22Speaker 4: Right, We support the entire relationship the whole way through.
- 8:25Speaker 4: So for that first year, we do monthly check ins
- 8:28Speaker 4: with the volunteer, with the parent, with the kid. How
- 8:31Speaker 4: are things going, how's it? You know? Is there any
- 8:32Speaker 4: way we can help support you support that match? You know,
- 8:35Speaker 4: volunteers we ask all the time, well, you know, the
- 8:37Speaker 4: kid kind of brought this question up. I'm not trying
- 8:38Speaker 4: to answer that. We have a huge library resource that
- 8:42Speaker 4: we can say, here's a really great way of handling
- 8:45Speaker 4: this question and really making sure you're confident, you feel prepared,
- 8:49Speaker 4: and you're supported all through this program.
- 8:53Speaker 3: That's neat and it really i know, develops those relationships,
- 8:57Speaker 3: gives people a chance to get back, you know, whether
- 9:01Speaker 3: if you're going to be the big and help someone
- 9:05Speaker 3: develop their you know, maybe a lifelong passion for different things,
- 9:10Speaker 3: career opportunities to decide what to do next after you
- 9:14Speaker 3: graduate from high school. When does it typically start. What's
- 9:18Speaker 3: the age group that you like to get in.
- 9:20Speaker 4: We will let a kid enroll at six years old.
- 9:22Speaker 4: We don't have any six year olds right now, but
- 9:24Speaker 4: that's kind of this where it starts at. And then
- 9:27Speaker 4: we kind of start cutting off around sixteen seventeen. The
- 9:30Speaker 4: shortest we want so a commitment, it's at least twelve months.
- 9:33Speaker 4: The kids, I mean they what we want is kind
- 9:36Speaker 4: of that long term relationship with them, and time to
- 9:39Speaker 4: build the relationship takes twelve months, So at that sixteen
- 9:42Speaker 4: kind of cut off because you're kind of getting out
- 9:44Speaker 4: to where you're going to be graduating soon.
- 9:46Speaker 3: Anyway, that's great and anyway, it's a wonderful program. We're
- 9:51Speaker 3: glad to have you on to help promote that we
- 9:55Speaker 3: do have some really exciting stuff going on at the dealership.
- 9:58Speaker 3: We've got Valentine's Day coming up this weekend, so it's
- 10:01Speaker 3: Love your Toyota season, okay, and we've got some great
- 10:05Speaker 3: deals on Toyotas. We've got fifty five new Toyotas and
- 10:08Speaker 3: stock are on the way right now, including eighteen Tacomas,
- 10:12Speaker 3: and that's one of our best selling vehicles probably it
- 10:15Speaker 3: has been recently, especially because we've been we were converting
- 10:20Speaker 3: to a brand new model on the Wrap four.
- 10:22Speaker 2: Which is one of our other leading sellers, and.
- 10:24Speaker 3: Not the Highlander and Grand Highlander and all the others
- 10:29Speaker 3: aren't super popular, but those are Tacoma and Wrap four
- 10:33Speaker 3: kind of the bread and butter the most popular vehicles
- 10:37Speaker 3: we have right now. And we've got a brand new
- 10:41Speaker 3: Wrap four coming out. We just got our first one
- 10:44Speaker 3: on the ground last week and delivered it very quickly.
- 10:49Speaker 3: Those are going to be in really short supply here
- 10:52Speaker 3: for the probably most of this year as they wrap
- 10:55Speaker 3: up with the new model. It's been several years since
- 10:58Speaker 3: so we had a new rap for redesign and it's
- 11:02Speaker 3: just been super well accepted and people are real excited
- 11:06Speaker 3: about it. It's got new trim levels, lots of new technology,
- 11:11Speaker 3: all kinds of great stuff you'll want to explore. We
- 11:15Speaker 3: don't be put off because they're not on the ground yet. Well,
- 11:18Speaker 3: we'll find a chance to get you a chance to
- 11:21Speaker 3: explore it or help you find out, you know, get
- 11:23Speaker 3: more information about AB beforehand, and then we can help
- 11:27Speaker 3: you kind of find.
- 11:28Speaker 2: That perfect vehicle.
- 11:29Speaker 3: As they start to build up an allocation, every dealer's
- 11:34Speaker 3: got the same issue. So we've been working with our
- 11:38Speaker 3: team to really help sew it down a little bit.
- 11:41Speaker 3: Let's find out what you need and we'll get that great,
- 11:43Speaker 3: perfect vehicle for you. What we do have right now
- 11:47Speaker 3: are some great deals on Tundra and Tacoma. I mentioned Tacoma,
- 11:51Speaker 3: but Tundra has two point nine percent for seventy two
- 11:55Speaker 3: months plus one thousand dollars finance subvention cash. You do
- 11:59Speaker 3: to have to finance with Toyota Financial Services or that
- 12:03Speaker 3: if you're not interested in the financing, you can have
- 12:05Speaker 3: a three thousand dollars retail customer cash on an example Tundra.
- 12:11Speaker 2: We have a.
- 12:13Speaker 3: Tundra SR four wheel drive, double cab. That vehicle is
- 12:17Speaker 3: over fifty five hundred dollars off right now with the rebate,
- 12:21Speaker 3: and or you can lease it for just four thirty
- 12:23Speaker 3: six a month. And you know, we were talking beforehand
- 12:27Speaker 3: about your sister's Wrap four and they're great resale value
- 12:31Speaker 3: that it has when she's training it in at her
- 12:33Speaker 3: home in Kansas, and that Toyotas are a great resale
- 12:38Speaker 3: value people. They really do hold their value better than
- 12:42Speaker 3: really any other brand. And they one of the things
- 12:46Speaker 3: that does is make great leases because at least you're
- 12:48Speaker 3: paying for that estimated value. You're just paying for the
- 12:52Speaker 3: first part of the vehicle you're going to use. Say
- 12:55Speaker 3: I want to lease it for two or three years,
- 12:57Speaker 3: They'll estimate how much it'll be worth at the end
- 12:59Speaker 3: of the lead and you just pay for the difference.
- 13:02Speaker 3: So on a Tacoma, for instance, it can be a
- 13:06Speaker 3: really incredible low payment.
- 13:08Speaker 2: I mean today.
- 13:11Speaker 3: Like that, Yeah, that's awesome, We've got one in stock.
- 13:13Speaker 3: This is not a made up vehicle that isn't available.
- 13:16Speaker 3: It's a twenty six toa Tacoma four wheel drive double cab.
- 13:21Speaker 3: It's just three eighty a month, and that is a
- 13:24Speaker 3: pretty low payment in today's environment with the interest rates
- 13:28Speaker 3: that that we're faced with these days, and our team
- 13:32Speaker 3: can help you with that if you if anyone is
- 13:34Speaker 3: interested in, you know, checking out what payments are like.
- 13:37Speaker 3: There's a great tool on our website. There's a button
- 13:41Speaker 3: that says personalized your payment. You can go in there
- 13:44Speaker 3: and actually kind of work your own deal. It's a
- 13:47Speaker 3: really nice way to be able to take our dunge
- 13:50Speaker 3: just simple price. You can actually submit your credit if
- 13:54Speaker 3: you want to get it down and down to the
- 13:56Speaker 3: penny and get your credit involved there, or it's just
- 13:59Speaker 3: kind of tell it what you think your credit tier
- 14:02Speaker 3: is and then go from there. You can add your trade,
- 14:05Speaker 3: you can talk about you know, put the whole deal together,
- 14:09Speaker 3: see all the incentives, discounts, calculate your own payment, play
- 14:13Speaker 3: with the term, the down payment, every variable in building your.
- 14:17Speaker 2: Own car deal.
- 14:18Speaker 3: And then it's the same tool that our team uses
- 14:21Speaker 3: when you come in the store to present the numbers
- 14:23Speaker 3: to you, and the sales team all have access to that.
- 14:27Speaker 3: So we've had to eliminate all that back and forth
- 14:30Speaker 3: of the old negotiation with what they used to call
- 14:33Speaker 3: the four square and in the written dealer offer, where
- 14:38Speaker 3: you know, which is a negotiation tactic in the car business,
- 14:41Speaker 3: and you know, all the principles of the car payment
- 14:46Speaker 3: as really the same, its own math, and it takes
- 14:50Speaker 3: some tool or a person to calculate that, but we
- 14:54Speaker 3: try to make it really transparent, keep that price really simple,
- 14:58Speaker 3: and make it fun to buy a car. It's uh,
- 15:00Speaker 3: you know, we'd like to say that it's a it's
- 15:03Speaker 3: a chance to buy a car with a different experience.
- 15:07Speaker 2: You know, no hidden fees and you know you can
- 15:10Speaker 2: fall in love with.
- 15:11Speaker 3: A better car buying experience this weekend during the Valentine's
- 15:16Speaker 3: Day sale. And so enough of that, let's talk more
- 15:21Speaker 3: about the bigs again, you guys once again getting ready
- 15:25Speaker 3: for both for kid's sake, how many teams do you
- 15:28Speaker 3: expect to have this year?
- 15:30Speaker 4: Last year we had sixty eight teams looking to be like, yeah,
- 15:35Speaker 4: right there at the same same mark. So yeah, we're excited.
- 15:37Speaker 2: And your goal to rate how much money you trying.
- 15:39Speaker 4: To ten thousand, ten thousand? Awesome and working our way there.
- 15:44Speaker 4: Like I said, we're getting into really the ramp up time.
- 15:47Speaker 4: Every you kind of see more and more things trickle
- 15:48Speaker 4: in coming in as teams are kind of finalizing, getting
- 15:51Speaker 4: set up, and then y'all getting out there pushing for that.
- 15:54Speaker 2: So awesome.
- 15:55Speaker 1: Man.
- 15:55Speaker 3: You mentioned the each team is about six people, about.
- 16:00Speaker 4: Six people and an individually ask you set a goal
- 16:04Speaker 4: of one hundred and fifty dollars.
- 16:05Speaker 2: Does it cost anything or is it just the grazing
- 16:07Speaker 2: though a little bit?
- 16:08Speaker 4: Does it cost anything? Yeah, you do that and it's more. Yeah,
- 16:11Speaker 4: the bullones's appreciation.
- 16:12Speaker 2: Raise some of it from yourself if you want. Absolutely,
- 16:15Speaker 2: a lot of people.
- 16:15Speaker 4: Do we have some really cool things. I know there's
- 16:18Speaker 4: a bank here in town that does a silent auction.
- 16:20Speaker 4: We have another bank at Gateway. They do a lunch,
- 16:24Speaker 4: so you can kind of go in, they'll they'll they'll
- 16:25Speaker 4: do everything for you. You pay for a lunch, go
- 16:27Speaker 4: from there. I was just I was at the hospital
- 16:30Speaker 4: the other day listening to a presentation and heard over
- 16:33Speaker 4: the loudspeakers there's a bake sale now that some of
- 16:36Speaker 4: the nurses are doing. That's going for their Bowl team.
- 16:38Speaker 4: So bake sales or auctions or lunches, there's a really
- 16:43Speaker 4: you can be as creative as you want with this.
- 16:45Speaker 3: Absolutely, that's awesome. And one hundred and ten thousand dollars
- 16:49Speaker 3: is a lot.
- 16:50Speaker 4: It is a lot. Yeah, we're growing kind of what
- 16:53Speaker 4: it is.
- 16:54Speaker 2: Do you where does the money go. What is it?
- 16:55Speaker 2: Do you guys need the money for.
- 16:57Speaker 4: The biggest thing? Yeah, just over his quite a bit
- 17:00Speaker 4: where we're moving locations.
- 17:02Speaker 2: Okay, actually, so.
- 17:04Speaker 4: Come March first, we're gonna have a new location.
- 17:07Speaker 2: Uh.
- 17:08Speaker 4: The other big thing when it comes to background checks,
- 17:11Speaker 4: when it comes to support, comes to insurance, all those things,
- 17:14Speaker 4: to make sure the depatch everything protected protected. Yeah, and
- 17:19Speaker 4: the match is successful at the at the end of
- 17:21Speaker 4: the day. That's the biggest thing we want.
- 17:23Speaker 2: Yeah, that's true.
- 17:25Speaker 3: And of course you're part of the Oklahoma Big Brothers
- 17:29Speaker 3: Big Sisters. It's a state wide organization and there I
- 17:33Speaker 3: assume there's Big Brothers and Sisters organizations and pretty much
- 17:38Speaker 3: most of the state.
- 17:40Speaker 4: All fifty states have one. There are five areas here
- 17:43Speaker 4: in Oklahoma, so there's Tulsa, Oklahoma City, Norman, Steelwater, and
- 17:47Speaker 4: then us in Martin, Oh.
- 17:49Speaker 2: Okay. Well, that's pretty cool to have our own area.
- 17:51Speaker 4: It is. We pretty much serve no wada Washington County
- 17:55Speaker 4: of our footprint.
- 17:56Speaker 2: Yeah, it's not just not just bartle Sell yep.
- 17:59Speaker 3: And how many you mentioned that you'd grown and you
- 18:03Speaker 3: have a bunch of kids on the waiting list. How
- 18:06Speaker 3: many matches are there now? I mean, how many people
- 18:09Speaker 3: are a part of the program, do you know?
- 18:11Speaker 4: So we ended last year eighty one kids served. Right
- 18:15Speaker 4: now we're a trajectory. We'll serve one hundred kids this year. Yeah,
- 18:19Speaker 4: with everything kind of if we do the same thing
- 18:21Speaker 4: we did last year, and I actually think we'll do more.
- 18:24Speaker 4: Just as we looked past over the months, it was
- 18:26Speaker 4: kind of growing faster and faster every month. So I'm
- 18:29Speaker 4: sure we'll hit that hundred mark this year. Really excited
- 18:31Speaker 4: about that. We haven't. We haven't hit a hundred mark
- 18:34Speaker 4: hundred kids served since I think the nineties. Really it's yeah,
- 18:38Speaker 4: it's really kind of Yeah, we're on a really big
- 18:40Speaker 4: growth pattern right now.
- 18:41Speaker 2: That's awesome. Man.
- 18:43Speaker 3: So somebody if they are there other requirements for being
- 18:46Speaker 3: a big and you know what's the you know, what's
- 18:49Speaker 3: that deal age.
- 18:51Speaker 2: And you know you really look at what do you
- 18:53Speaker 2: I mean the targeting?
- 18:54Speaker 4: Yeah, need a car, that's kind of thing. We're also
- 18:58Speaker 4: starting a new program here. We've kind of had site based,
- 19:01Speaker 4: but we're really going to have a focused school. So
- 19:03Speaker 4: Jane Phillips, this has been growing a lot. If you
- 19:07Speaker 4: just want to have a lunch with a kid, we
- 19:09Speaker 4: have I think seventeen kids waiting at Jane Phillips. So
- 19:13Speaker 4: what we call this is our site based program. You're
- 19:15Speaker 4: not out in the community. You have to do anything
- 19:16Speaker 4: outside of work, go have lunch with a kid once
- 19:20Speaker 4: a week, you know, every other week, something like that.
- 19:23Speaker 4: And then we have what we call our community based program.
- 19:25Speaker 4: And that's typically what you think of when you think
- 19:28Speaker 4: of our program. That's where you arrange a time with
- 19:30Speaker 4: the parents, say hey, I'm going to swing by, pick
- 19:32Speaker 4: up the kid, and we're going to go to Sonic
- 19:34Speaker 4: and have a drink.
- 19:35Speaker 2: Yeah. Sometimes it's that simple.
- 19:36Speaker 4: Yeah, it really is.
- 19:37Speaker 3: Yeah, but it could also be doing stuff you like
- 19:40Speaker 3: to do, like go and fishing or swimming like you mentioned,
- 19:44Speaker 3: or whatever I mean, are they.
- 19:45Speaker 4: We ask these kids all these questions and yeah, what
- 19:48Speaker 4: are you into? What are your hobbies? Bring them along
- 19:50Speaker 4: with the things you're already doing. We've also developed a
- 19:53Speaker 4: lot of relationships just in the community. So the bowling elling,
- 19:57Speaker 4: for example, the Putt putt place here, the arcades at Ramy's.
- 20:02Speaker 4: There's a lot of things we've done to make it
- 20:03Speaker 4: easier to be a big So it's we made it fun.
- 20:07Speaker 3: We tried to anyway what about the littles and you
- 20:10Speaker 3: know somebody, maybe a parent is listening and thanks, well mate,
- 20:13Speaker 3: I wonder if that would work for my child?
- 20:16Speaker 2: What what how do they.
- 20:17Speaker 3: Find out more and what and what is your what
- 20:20Speaker 3: is what are you looking for in that person?
- 20:23Speaker 4: To connect with a big same thing, same website, Big
- 20:27Speaker 4: Oklahoma dot org. And so there's two links, one to volunteer,
- 20:30Speaker 4: one to sign up a child go through there. It's
- 20:33Speaker 4: kind of the same process. Well, you'll you'll, you'll answer
- 20:36Speaker 4: some brief information, we'll give you a call, set up
- 20:39Speaker 4: a time to come and interview. You'll come in. So
- 20:41Speaker 4: for for us, there's only two of us. There's myself
- 20:44Speaker 4: and then Daniel. Daniel is the one who will really
- 20:46Speaker 4: kind of reach in interview everybody fill everything out. And
- 20:50Speaker 4: that's really I mean, that's that's really about it. At
- 20:52Speaker 4: the end of the day, we want to help kids.
- 20:54Speaker 4: We really want to make them just bring out their
- 20:56Speaker 4: full potential.
- 20:58Speaker 2: It is about kind of unlocking that potential and.
- 21:01Speaker 4: We see it. We see it all the time. I
- 21:04Speaker 4: could really dig into a bunch of stats and we'll
- 21:06Speaker 4: have a bunch of time for that. But the impact
- 21:08Speaker 4: that we're making in kids lives I think if I
- 21:11Speaker 4: could just use one the biggest impact that we saw,
- 21:14Speaker 4: two thirds of the economic gap is being closed through
- 21:17Speaker 4: kids in our program. And we found that through just
- 21:20Speaker 4: a study was released. It was from Harvard and the
- 21:23Speaker 4: US National Treasury looked at kids in our program in
- 21:26Speaker 4: the nineties. Now that they've grown up, two thirds of
- 21:29Speaker 4: them that were in Harverish economic classes are now in
- 21:33Speaker 4: middle class and so we really are closing the gap
- 21:36Speaker 4: making kids have much brighter futures.
- 21:39Speaker 2: That's outstanding.
- 21:41Speaker 3: And let's talk about young scholars on corkuer Sport one
- 21:45Speaker 3: more time Saturday, February twenty eighth. It's a great event.
- 21:49Speaker 3: I've been to it the last several years, seven to nine.
- 21:53Speaker 3: There's a little bit of wine tasting, a great dinner,
- 21:58Speaker 3: chance to hear from a uh former uh usually a
- 22:02Speaker 3: chance to hear from a former participant in the program.
- 22:04Speaker 3: It talks about their their life and what it did
- 22:07Speaker 3: for them and then it's gone on to get a
- 22:09Speaker 3: scholarship and uh, you know, this program is about giving
- 22:13Speaker 3: you know, kind of the that next stage after high
- 22:16Speaker 3: school of connecting up from from the from the beginning
- 22:20Speaker 3: of that relationship all the way into then put into
- 22:23Speaker 3: college and getting the scholarships uh that are that are
- 22:27Speaker 3: out there and helping connect kids with those opportunities that
- 22:30Speaker 3: come with going to college and that that opportunity to
- 22:35Speaker 3: have that.
- 22:35Speaker 2: Paid for it.
- 22:36Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, I was. I was at the event last
- 22:37Speaker 4: year as well. It is incredible the speaker there, Yeah,
- 22:42Speaker 4: past Little Sister and just inspiring. It really really is. Yeah,
- 22:47Speaker 4: you want you want to go home feeling really good.
- 22:49Speaker 4: That's a great event. Kind of come listen to those
- 22:51Speaker 4: inspiring stories. Yeah, it'll it'll get you.
- 22:54Speaker 2: Yeah. Well, it's another one to look into.
- 22:58Speaker 3: I'm sure you can find that at Young Scholars of Bartlesville.
- 23:02Speaker 3: Just search for that, or if you're bowling is more
- 23:05Speaker 3: your thing, you can search for the Big Brothers Big Sisters.
- 23:10Speaker 3: It's easy to find that on their events page. It's
- 23:13Speaker 3: got both for kid's sake. And that's the twenty seventh
- 23:17Speaker 3: I think, and then the dates in March.
- 23:19Speaker 4: Again March fifth or March sixth, March, so.
- 23:23Speaker 2: You just do one day. Is that how it works
- 23:24Speaker 2: with the gamers?
- 23:25Speaker 4: So when you sign happy that yourself, you sign up
- 23:27Speaker 4: a team, We'll have a little drop down menu saying
- 23:29Speaker 4: which bowl party do you want to attend? If you
- 23:32Speaker 4: work at Conico Phillips or Phillips sixty six. We also
- 23:35Speaker 4: have we use those the Phillip sixty six lanes. Those
- 23:39Speaker 4: are at lunchtime and that's February twenty sixth or March fifth.
- 23:43Speaker 4: Those are two Thursdays. So yep, if you're there, if
- 23:45Speaker 4: you want to put a team together with a bunch
- 23:47Speaker 4: of workers and co workers, we're happy to do that.
- 23:51Speaker 2: Help you out a good deal.
- 23:53Speaker 3: And as I mentioned, we've got Valentine's Day coming up
